Fourteen year old Jacob Turner is chasing his dream to become an International Mountain Bike Rider, and one day represent New Zealand at the Commonwealth Games.

North Canterbury is a breeding ground for top riders, and Jacob eyes the likes of Anton Cooper and Ben Oliver as local inspiration, and is hot on their wheels to reach his goals.

Jacob first got into mountain biking after seeing his mum compete in her first Mountain Bike race, the Lees Valley Challenge. Then the opportunity came up in Year 5 when he was 10, to do an interschool team relay. The Huxster is held at McLeans Island and is a 3 hour event which he did with his friend Harri, and he has been hooked ever since.

He enjoys Cross Country riding because of the enormous effort, but also does a bit of downhill and enduro. Over the winter Jacob gets out on the road bike and does the cyclocross series too.

Jacob is a member of the North Canterbury Cycling Club, and the Christchurch Single Track Club.

He is coached by Marc Prutton, and is now training daily, and usually competes in an event each week. Jacob says the hardest part about mountain biking is a lot of the training is done on his own. But the best part is seeing all of that hard work pay off with a good finish.

Jacob also enjoys catching up with his mountain biking mates, riding the single tracks, building big jumps and seeing what tricks they can do.

Depending on the level of competition, Jacob often races in different age groups. For school events he races as an Under 16, but for National racing events he competes with U17's, and in many other events it is U18 or 19. So he is often competing against riders 2-5 years older than him.

Some of his impressive results include the recent Kaiwara Classic Challenge. This event is 43km from Culverden to Cheviot. Jacob was first overall from 80 finishes, and 1st in the U19.

He finished 2nd in the Canterbury Schools Mountain Bike Championship at Halswell Quarry, and 2nd in National School Championships in Rotorua.

Earlier in the year Jacob was second in both the South Island Cross Country Champs in Christchurch, and the Oceania Cross Country Champs in Dunedin in the U17 category.

Another highlight was finishing the 35km Long Beach Coastal Challenge 9th overall from 231 finishers, and 1st in the U18 category.

Jacob also received the Anton Cooper Junior mountain biker award.

In the short term Jacob will continue his close rivalry with Ethan Rose and Adam Francis, as they push each other to improve. Long term Jacob wants to be picked up by the New Zealand MTB National Performance hub, and then one day race at the UCI XCO World Cup, and Commonwealth Games.

Jacob appreciates the support from his North Canterbury Cycling Club, along with the Southern Trust and Trust Aoraki, in providing assistance to pay entry fees and donations towards costs.

Mountain Biking involves regular bike servicing too, and Jacob is grateful to the support from Darryn Giles at Chain Reaction Cycles.

There is also wear and tear on clothing and shoes, and ensuring good nutrition. With this continuing support, his family, and Jacob's determined work ethic, this young man is a future star to keep an eye on.

Sammi Harnett was placed 2nd for her age group in the Ocean Sw im Ser ies, and 3rd in the Open Women's category. Sammi finished 1st for the female 20-24 division in both the Bay of Islands Classic in Russell, and Capital Classic in Wellington, and 2nd in the Harbour Crossing, and King of the Bays events in Auckland.

Rangiora High Schools Lucy Grigg played Polo in t h e Ch r ist ch u r ch Com bin ed t eam at the Schools Polo tournament held at the Port Hills Polo Club. She played a key role in this, her first A Grade event, eventually winning the final.

The Rangiora High School Senior A & B Girls Volleyball teams competed at the Can t er bu r y Volleyball Ch am pion sh ips finishing 1st and 8th in their divisions. At the Sou t h Islan d Volleyball Ch am ps they finished 3rd= and 9th respectively.

Eleven riders from the North Canterbury BMX club attended the 2018 Nationals in New Plymouth over Easter, finishing with 2 podium finishes and another 5 riders making finals.

The clubs youngest rider at the Nationals, 4 year old Nixon Murphy finished second in the 5 and under age group. He and his brother Cooper, who finished 5th in the 6 year old boys, were attending their first Nationals.

Nic Daniels, the South Island 16 year old boys Champion, continued his good form, finishing 3rd at the Nationals among tough competition.

The North Canterbury BMX club are looking forward to the improvements being made to the club track at Milton Park near the Ashley Bridge.

TOO COOL FOR SCHOOL - UNIVERSITY FUTSAL PHOTO BY MAKSHOTS

The National University Futsal Championships were held in Christchurch at the ARA Institute and Cowells Stadium courts over the weekend 13th-15th April. This was the 4th edition of the Championships hosted by NZ Football and University and Tertiary Sport NZ. The stakes are high with players at this years and the 2019 Championships, up for selection in the NZ University team for the 2020 World University Futsal Championships in Poland. Students in their final year of study in 2019 are still eligible.

Former Waimakariri United Football player, and Rangiora High School Futsal player, Georgia Moore, featured in the University of Victoria team. Two time bronze medalist at the NZ Secondary School Futsal Championships, Georgia is now in her first year at Victoria University in Wellington, studying Media Studies and Anthropology.

The Victoria University team had a very close game first up against Otago, going down 7-8. In their second round match they defeated Waikato University 11-0. Next up they upset hot favourites University of Auckland 3-1, and then defeated last years champions Auckland University of Technology 6-3. In their final round robin match they defeated Massey University Futsal 4-6. This put them through to the final and a rematch with University of Auckland.

What happens when you combine two of the most popular sports in the world? Footgolf is born! Simply put this sport is the combination of strategically using power and precision to get the ball in the hole in the fewest number kicks.

A new initiative by the Rangiora Golf Club establishes one of only three courses in the South Island, the others being Frankton and St Andrews.

The course is currently 9 holes and sits alongside the golf course, with par 3, 4, and 5 holes. The terrain is rolling and some of the holes are dog-legs and set amongst the trees, so it can be challenging. Very little equipment is required.

Players use an official scorecard, a size 5 football, and a pair of trainers (no football boots allowed). The course is generally completed between 60-90 minutes for a group of 4.

Footgolf is expanding across the world, with a third World Cup to be held in Morocco in November 2018. Rooted to the golf family, Footgolf requires the usual course etiquette, courtesy and sportsmanship.

Following on from the successful open day, the Rangiora Golf Club will be opening the course to Footgolf on Sunday's 1:30pm-4pm from April-June.

The cost to play the 9 holes is $10 for Adults, and $5 for school age children. Family pass (2 adults & 2 children) $20. Ball hire is $5 per ball.

HOOPSOFFIRE Basketball is increasingly the choice of sport for young New Zealanders. It is a great problem to have for the sport that celebrates excellent role models such as Steven Adams, and teams like the Breakers, who thrive on success.

The Term 1 North Canterbury Basketball Primary Schools competition has just come to an end with more than 100 teams participating. This competition is a hot breeding ground for talent, and the display of talent, determination, and athleticism across the schools was evident.

The Rangiora Hockey Club has grown to 27 teams this winter season with the addition of mid-week men's and women's teams. The mid-week women's team have a strong Hurunui representation with a group of players from as far away as Rotherham teaming up with Rangiora based players. The mid-week men's team is a result of a number of youth players moving into the senior ranks and some new players moving into the area.

The season kicked off with what is hoped will be an annual feature fixture between the Rangiora and Hinemoa-Kaiapoi Hockey Club. The teams were evenly matched and the final score was 2-2.
