Surfing will make its debut at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics at Shida Beach. As a new Olympic sport, the next generation of boarders have new goals to aspire to, and North Canterbury surfer Tegen Bishop is one of those.

At the age of 10 Tegen suffered a skiing accident, breaking her leg in several places including the fibula, tibia, and bones in her ankle. For rehabilitation she was told to take up water sports like swimming, which expanded to Surf Life Saving, and then a desire to surf. Tegen managed to talk her dad into a joint surfing lesson, and the rest is history in the making!

After her first lesson at 11, she began surfing competitively at 12, and is now part of the North Wai Boardriders Surf Club.

Surfing has a broad range of categories with the main two types being shortboarding; using a shorter board for more dynamic use such as quicker turns and aerials, and longboarding; using a longer board allowing surfers to "walk" the board and do flowing turns.

Tegen predominantly competes in shortboard, but has done a few longboard competitions too. She surfs all year round, but the competition season generally runs January to May, and in the height of the season Tegen competes every weekend. There is a National circuit, with a couple of nationally rated competitions in the South Island, but most are in the North Island. There is the odd winter competition too but mostly the off season is for training.

It is clear that Tegen is getting out what she puts in. She works hard under a number of coaches including Nick Black and Hugh Ritchie who are involved with North Wai Boardriders.

She is also coached by Mark Perana as part of the Canterbury surf team. Tegen has a strength & conditioning coach, Michelle Drielsma, who is based in Australia and coaches her online, 3 times per week.

During term time Tegen is training on the water 3-4 times per week, and every day in the holidays. Added to this she also does kneeboarding, or paddling on a local irrigation pond to help with cardio-vascular fitness and her paddling technique.

Tegen has a specialised skateboard, a Smoothstar, that she also uses to train on her half-pipe as well.

This helps her work on specific techniques related to her surfing.

Tegen also hopes to get back into Karate too.

The toughest thing about surfing, according to Tegen, is the cold water during the winter season. With her aspirations to reach the top of her sport, winter surfing is a must, and despite all of the gear; wetsuit, hood, gloves and boots, hands and feet are soon numb, and the shorter daylight hours often means coming out of the water in the dark.

However Tegen also cites the ever changing surf as the best thing about surfing. No wave is ever the same and surfing is constantly progressing with the level of innovation ever improving. She says "Surfing is always a challenge and you can always get better." A big part of this is perfecting your competitive mindset. Tegen explains that 80% of competing is in the mindset and sometimes it is hard not to over think things. It is about maintaining the ideal performance state.

Tegen is grateful for the grants she has received, especially from the Inspire Foundation who assisted with getting her to the Junior World Championships in Japan. Also the support from Rangiora High School, and the coaches at North Wai Boardriders.

In Br ief Triathletes from North Canterbury schools were at the front at the Can t er bu r y Secon dar y Sch ools Tr iat h lon , with the Kaiapoi High School Mixed teams finishing 1st and 2nd. In the individual events Rangiora High School athletes achieved top three finishes with Ethan McLachlan finishing 3rd in the U16 boys, and Quade McLachlan finishing 2nd in the U14 boys. Quade went on to finish 2nd in the U13 boys at the NZ Secon dar y Sch ools Tr iat h lon .

The Rangiora High School Super Touch mixed team had an outstanding season winning the Can t er bu r y Secon dar y Sch ools Ch am ps and finishing 2nd at the Sou t h Islan d Secon dar y Sch ools, which qualifies them for Nationals in December.

The Canterbury team featuring four riders from the View Hill Pony Club (Jessie Fitzjohn, Jordan Shrimpton, Lucy Cochrane, and Charlotte Thomas) have defended their NZPCA Even t in g Ch am pion sh ip in Masterton.

North Canterbury Athletic Club's Xanthe Jane was recently awarded the Sh oe Clin ic Ju n ior At h let e of t h e Week after running the fastest 2km leg time for the 12yr girls (6min58) at the Hagley Memorial Relays, leading her North Canterbury team to the win.

Xanthe also recently ran a PB sub 20min 5km Parkrun at the recent Pegasus Parkrun 100th run celebrations.

North Canterbury Athletics took part in the Lion el Fox Relays at Woodend Beach. The senior men finished 6th, and the senior women were 3rd. The U18 boys team (aged 11-13) finished 7th, and the U18 girls team (aged 12-14) finished 5th.

This weekend at the Hanmer Events half martahon/10k/5k, John and Brian were 1st & 2nd in the 40-49 half marathon.

Dave was 1st in the 50-59 10k, and Ngaire was 2nd in the 40-49 category. Pippa and Caitlin were 1st & 2nd respectively in the 5km U17 event.

Congratulations to Will Hamilton (Ohoka), and Ben Hartland (Cheviot), who have received a Fu lt on Cr ick et Sch olar sh ip, for young country cricketers who display the potential to go on to play first class cricket.

On the 21st April 2018, Pegasus Parkrun celebrated its 100th run and it was their biggest yet, with 247 participants, smashing the previous record of 93.

Parkrun is a global event that originally began as the Bushy Park Time Trial in 2004 in the UK. It was brought to NZ in 2012 to Lower Hutt.

On the 18th June 2016, 61 runners began the first ever Pegasus Parkrun around Lake Pegasus.

Pegasus Parkrun is the only FREE regular 5km running, jogging, and walking event in North Canterbury, and is held every Saturday morning at 8am. All participants are timed and recorded. The event is for anyone of any age, and any ability.

You simply register once, and can then participate at any Parkrun around the world.

Parkrun is run entirely by volunteers and Geoff and his team at Pegasus Parkrun do an amazing job, and the 100th running was no exception.

As Parkrun is all about health and wellbeing, donations were also collected on behalf of the Heart Foundation. Many thanks to the sponsors who have supported the 100th run, especially the National Parkrun Sponsor, NZ Home Loans, The Flat White Cafe, Happy Hire for the donation of the bouncy castle, Beat All Cakes for the celebratory cake, and the over 60 businesses providing spot prizes. Courts at the Mega stadium Rangiora, Rangiora New Life School, Woodend Community Centre, and Ohoka School Hall, were buzzing with competition in 6 agegroup sections.

The winners were: Eastside Scorpions (Yr 7/8 A grade boys), North Canterbury Wildcats (Yr 7/8 A grade girls), Marlborough Basketball (Yr 7/8 development boys), North Canterbury Lions (Yr 5/6 A grade boys), North Canterbury Siamese Cats (Yr 5/6 A grade girls), Pioneer Grey (Yr 5/6 development boys).

In the Preliminary Round of the Chatham Cup, Waimak United met Burnham on Coronation Park in wet conditions. With neither club playing in the top Canterbury League, both were trying to kickstart what they would hope to be a giant killing run in NZ Football's equivalent of the famed English FA Cup. Burnham started the brighter scoring an absolute screamer, and it looked as though the fairytale would begin for them. However the Waimak lads kicked into gear and by halftime the score was 4-1 to Waimak. Needing to gain some confidence after dropping points in the regular league they kicked on to win 8-1 with Danny Loney bagging 5 goals, and one each to Luke Fraser, Mitchell Quigley, and Ben Hardy.

The draw for the next round has been made and Waimak will face Mainland Premier League side, Coastal Spirit on the 12th or 13th May. So they will need to slay a giant to progress, but that is what Cup dreams are made of.

Results from 5th May: Waimak CCL went down 0-1 to Halswell, the Reserve men defeated Parklands 6-2, and the CWC Reserve Women defeated Cashmere Tech 6-3.

Following on from Anzac Day commemorations, battles for shields and trophies took place on the rugby fields.

Teams showed their respect for our fallen Anzac soldiers with a minutes silence before play got underway. In the Saracens v Ashley match, Saracens came away with the Rakahuri Shield defeating Ashley 42-27. Meanwhile in Kaiapoi, Oxford were playing their hosts for the Deans Shield and Workingmen's Club Trophy. The visitors would take both back to Oxford with a 31-25 win over Kaiapoi.

Ohoka also defeated Hampstead 32-17, but Glenmark Cheviot and Hurunui went down to Lincoln and Darfield respectivley.

In the next round Saracens defeated Ohoka 44-21, Glenmark Cheviot beat Ashley 76-12, Kaiapoi rolled Rolleston 48-0, and Oxford overcame Hornby 36-12.

This weekend Ashley were again defeated 5-40 by Southbridge, Ohoka bounced back to beat Lincoln 22-10. Glenmark Cheviot defeated Burnham/ Dunsandel/Irwell 23-16, and Saracens now sit 2nd in their pool with a 45-19 win over Hampstead. In the other pool Hurunui went down to Methven 54-25, Oxford had a narrow 35-37 loss to Rakaia, and Kaiapoi also went close with a 37-39 loss to Darfield.

And in the first round of the UC 1st XV competition Rangiora High defeated Lincoln Combined 13-12.

North Canterbury Swim Club sent a team of 11 swimmers, Ollie Rayner, Isaac Dann, Angus Kelliher, Nick Close, Eugene Dickie, Findlay Knox, Lewy Bell, Annamiek Noye, Holly Rahurahu, Emma Schroder, and Cassie Taylor, who had qualified throughout the year, to the NZ National Age Group Championships in Auckland. Five of those swimmers were making their debut at this level.

The competition attracts over 700 athletes representing 90 teams, and includes swimmers from Australia and New Caledonia.

The typical day at this meet is up at 6:20am and off to the pool for 7:15am, back for rest between 2-3pm and then back to the pool for the evening session between 4:15pm-10pm.

It is a gruelling five days.

However this was made easier by the team working well together and supporting each other both in and out of the pool.

This meet also gave the swimmers the opportunity to watch and meet the likes of Lewis Clareburt, who recently represented NZ at the Commonwealth Games, winning Bronze in the 400m Individual Medlay. To swim at the same event is inspiring and gives opportunities to learn from what they do before a race.

This, as expected, was a high quality event, with a good number of NZ records falling over the week of competition.

80% of the swims by our North Canterbury Swim Club athletes were Personal Bests, and they made 25 finals. A fantastic achievement for all the hard work put in by athletes and coaches alike.

Angus, Holly, Ollie, and Annamiek also broke 15 club records between them.

Overall the club gained 5 Gold medals: Angus (3), 50, 100, 200 backstroke, Ollie 50 fly, Holly 50 backstroke. Angus also broke the Canterbury records for the 50, 100, and 200 backstroke events. The 200m record had stood since 1991, so this was an amazing swim by Angus.

The club also picked up 5 Silver medals: Angus (2) 100, 200 Fly, Holly (2) 100, 200 backstroke, and Ollie 200 fly, and 4 Bronze medals: Angus 200m IM, Ollie 100 Fly, Cassie 200 Breastroke, and Nick 1500m Freestyle.

The Zonal (4x200m) relay including Angus picked up silver in the A boys, and Holly swam for the Canterbury B girls finishing 6th.

The Club also had 4 (4x100) relay teams with the girls freestyle finishing 12th, the boys freestyle finishing 11th, the Medley girls finishing 9th, and the boys Medley picking up 5th place.

Overall a tremendous haul from the North Canterbury swimmers, and great consistency from the whole team across the full five days.

The 2018 Tournament Waterski Nationals were held in April in Piarere just south of Cambridge.

A large team from Canterbury travelled up to compete in 1-3 events (Slalom, Tricks and Jump) with 6 of those competitors from Rangiora.

The week long tournament started well for Canterbury, with Southbrook School pupil Zak Bainbridge taking the first Gold medal in subjunior Slalom (Under 10?s). Zak followed that up two days later with another Gold in Tricks, setting himself up to take out the Gold medal for the best overall skier in his division.

Next up was last year ?s Under 10?s overall national champion and current Slalom NZ record holder Sam Bainbridge, skiing up a division this year in the Junior Boys Division (11-14yrs). Sam competed in all 3

events and came home a creditable 5th in overall standings amongst a very strong field of 15 skiers.

Next off the dock was Rangiora High school student and neighbour to the Bainbridge boys, Diaz Mckay who followed up a fantastic season, winning a bronze medal in her specialist event Slalom in the Junior Girls Division. A very close final saw the top four Junior Girls separated by only one bouy. Diaz placed 5th in the Junior Girls Tricks final.

Mark Bainbridge (Zak & Sam?s father), and Steve Wayne each won Gold medals in Slalom, in their respective age groups, some of the biggest divisions of the tournament.

To cap off an amazing week of skiing

by North Canterbury skiers Morgan Diehl won Gold in Men?s Slalom then Gold again in Open Men?s Slalom to become NZ?s No.1 Slalom skier for the 4th year in a row.

All these skiers ski and train at the purpose built waterski site in the subdivision of Northbrook Waters in Rangiora. Counting this years success Northbrook is now home to 11 past and present National Slalom Waterski Champions as well as 3 current Slalom NZ record holders which must make it one of most successful sporting streets in New Zealand.

Canterbury won the Teams Trophy Shield again for overall total points.

RANGIORA HIGH SCHOOL 1ST XI FOOTBALL The opening round of the Connetics Premier School 1st XI Football competition took place at the Christchurch Football Academy at Yaldhurst on Wednesday. Rangiora High School came away with a hard fought nil all draw against Christchurch Boys High School.

With only a few forays into the opposition half, it was the defensive effort led by Captain Jack Hanlon, along with some fantastic saves from Bailey Hodge in goal, that enabled the Rangiora team to nab a first round point.

NORTH CANTERBURY BASKETBALL Some of the Canterbury Basketball Association Leagues started last weekend with three North Canterbury teams in action.

The Division One Men went down to Atami White 62-74. The game started relatively evenly however Atami were able to create a lead and hang on. The North Canterbury U18 Women defeated Royals 87-27. The U21 Women defeated Wolverines 62-30, in a match they were always in control of.

This weekend the Mens Div 1 team went down to Gators Red 51-83. The Men's U20's defeated St Bedes 86-58. The North Canterbury U21 Women were defeated by Lincoln University 51-86.
