Ben Oliver and his family were often found on local trails on their bikes and around 13 years of age Ben started to race Mountain Bikes along with his brother Craig. He credits having to keep up with Craig, and having a built in training partner as a major part of his success. It also helped when they first joined the world mountain bike circuits having someone to travel with.

A typical training week for Ben involves riding seven days with a mix of mountain and road cycling, plus some gym sessions thrown in. He also does a bit of trail running and hiking and in the off season mixes things up with some Enduro riding.

Ben says coming from New Zealand and North Canterbury makes things harder to be a

mountain bike racer when all of the racing is in Europe, but North Canterbury and surrounds have some great training grounds. Ben has the same coach as fellow North Cantabrian Anton Cooper, and he says seeing what Anton, and Sam Gaze (another NZ Rep) have achieved proves what is possible coming from New Zealand.

Ben is a really competitive person and the mix of physical and technical skills involved in Mountain Bike race is what makes him want to keep doing it. That and racing in some awesome parts of the world.

Whilst the majority of the circuit is in Europe, Ben has also raced a World Cup event in South Africa, and has another coming up in Mont Saint Anne in Canada. His favourite event so far though has to be representing his country at the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast. He said having heaps of friends and family watching and cheering him on was great, and being part of the Games environment with other athletes from a variety of sports was amazing.

As with most mountain bike races the Commonwealth Games course demanded balance, speed, endurance, precision, technical mastery, and of course nerves of steel.

Whilst Sam Gaze and Anton Cooper took most of the headlines, Ben came in 4th overall, which was an outstanding effort.

Ben has a list of excellent Top 10 finishes in the Men's U23 World Cup Circuit already this year, including an 8th placing in the recent Val Di Sole race in Italy. He also finished 10th in Nove Mesto na Morave in the Czech Republic in May, and placed 2nd in South Africa in March.

In Br ief Waimak United's Gabi Rennie has been selected in the NZ U20 Foot ball team for the FIFA World Cup in France starting in August.

North Canterbury basketballers, Charlotte Whittaker and Helen Mathews have been selected in the NZ Pr em ier e Sou t h team to play the University of Hawaii.

North Canterbury's Jeremy Morriss on his gold at the Sou t h Islan d Boccia Ch am pion sh ips in the BC 1, 2, 4 Division.

Rangiora Hockey's Ben Chorley has been selected in the NZ Men's 40+ team for the Masters World Cup in Spain.

Quade McLachlan (Jnr boys) was 6th in the Championship sprint, and 13th in the long course. Dominic Cleary (Snr boys) was 8th, Ethan McLachlan (Int boys) 11th, and India Higby (Jnr Girls) 19th in the Championship long course. Ben Spark (Snr boys) also placed 4th in the Standard long course.

Ashgrove Primary student Leo MacKay picked up 5th in the standard long course Yr 7/8 event.

North Canterbury Athletics club members Navajo Prentice (u20W), John Marshall (35-49M) and Jo Ramsay and Natasha Mitchell (35+W) have been selected in the Can t er bu r y Cr oss Cou n t r y t eam for the Nationals in August

The North Canterbury Netball U17 girls headed to Palmerston North ambitious and hungry for success at the NZ Netball Championships.

In Pool play they began with a great 30-18 win over Nga Awa Hou. They had losses against bigger centre teams Howick Parkaranga 19-40, and Waitakere One 22-37, and then defeated Hamilton B 38-26.

This meant they would playoff in the middle group of 16. They started the playoffs with a win over Marlborough 30-18. Their quarter final opponent was Coastlands Kapiti and they dispatched them 43-23. In the semi final the North Canterbury girls pulled off a win 44-39 over Mangere Otahuhu. Their final playoff match was against Christchurch and unfortunately they were beaten 29-22, to end a fantastic run.

Their final placing was 18th out of 42. An outstanding achievement.

Basketball teams from across the South Island descended on Oamaru for the annual Waitaki Primary basketball tournament, including teams representing North Canterbury, and from the Kaiapoi North School.

In the boys development grade the North Canterbury Development team won the grade 42-37.

The Kaiapoi North team performed well with some excellent experience gained for the future.

The girls A grade final was between North Canterbury and Kaiapoi North. The North Canterbury girls won 31-27.

The two local sides also met in the boys A semi final, with Kaiapoi North coming out on top by a single point. The North Canterbury boys finished 4th overall after losing their 3rd/4th playoff. The Kaiapoi North boys went on to win the A grade final defeating Mid Canterbury. Levi Fletcher was named MVP. It was nearly total domination with North Canterbury based teams winning 3 of the 4 grades, also finishing 2nd in one, and 4th in another. Amazing stuff from our local basketballers.

The Kaiapoi North School are sending teams off to the AIMS games in Tauranga so we look forward to following their progress.

North Canterbury footballer, Freya Lodge-Whitham, has recently returned from the NZ Secondary School Girls U15 tour to Sydney, Australia. A member of the Waimak United Football Club, playing for the Pride Development squad, Freya joined 17 other aspiring footballers from around the country, in a three match tour and the opportunity to represent their country.

In game one the NZ girls defeated the New South Wales U15 team 2-1. Game two finished up a nil all draw against the U17 Sydney University side. The final match of the tour was against the U16 New South Wales Academy. They were down 0-3 at halftime, but managed to score in the second half, with the fulltime score a 1-6 win to the Academy side.

Some solid results, many against older and bigger opposition, and a fantastic first international experience for the girls.

STEEPLECHASE ON WHEELS PHOTO BY MAKSHOTS

Southern Cross Cyclocross event was held at the A&P Showgrounds in Rangiora in the weekend, attracting a large number of riders from across Canterbury.

Cyclocross has sometimes been called a steeplechase on wheels as riders often have to dismount to conquer the terrain and obstacles. It is hugely popular in Europe and courses often consist of mud or snow and are a grueling test of endurance.

The Canterbury Cross Country Championships were held at a blustery and soft underfoot course at Halswell Quarry. The course included several waterfilled ditches for runners to navigate along the way. North Canterbury once again had some outstanding results, including 8 podium finishes.

Of the 60 on course, there were 11 parkrunners at Pegasus for their first time, First Time visitors from other parkruns were David Wain (Anderson pr), Ken Pullar (Dunedin pr), Kirsty Peterson (Puarenga pr), Sue Kim (Dunedin pr), Nathan and Shannon Woodward (Dunedin pr). Our First Time Ever parkrunners were Car ole Redpat h , St eve, Su zy & Ben j C and Poppy Silcock .

There were 7 PB's recorded from this run, they were achieved by Pau l Br ou w er s, Geof f M cM illan , Bidgie Jef f er ies, San dr a William son , Pet er Fr eem an , Isobel Sm it h and Allison Bow ie There were only a small number of Juniors on course this week, they were led in by Kir st y, Sien a and Ben j.

David Atkinson (running the fastest parkrun time in NZ this week) brought the field home in a blistering 16:09, he was followed - in the Men's field by Philip Opie (2nd overall) in another strong 17:16 and then by Stacey Garrett ( 5th overall, ) in a time of 19:34.

The Women's field was brought home by Hannah Oldroyd (3rd overall) in a great time of 17:40, she was followed by Freyja Prentice (4th overall) in a time of 18:06 and then by Carole Redpath (10th overall) in a time of 21:20.

Ru n Rep or t # - 28t h Ju ly 2018 At Pegasus parkrun we hosted 57 starters, of whom 6 participants completed their maiden journey around a parkrun course. First Time parkrunners were Jesse Chick, Royston Wright, Charlie Ross, Nicola Frew, Meg Stallard and Kay Boone.

Another 6 parkrunners powered their way around our course faster than ever before, those achieving a new PB were Sien a Gar r et t , Tessa Keelin g, San dr a Du r an d, Ker r y Jen k in son , Bidgie Jef f er ies and An gela Dick in son .

Leading the Juniors in were the familiar names of Joseph M at t h ew s and Sien a Gar r et t . In the Women's field, our First Finisher was Fr eyja Pr en t ice (2nd overall) in 18:00, followed by Car olyn For sey (8th overall) in 21:57 and then by Sien a Gar r et t (10th overall) in 22:43. Bringing the Men's field home this week was Ph ilip Opie (1st overall) in 17:16, followed by St acey Gar r et t (3rd overall) in 18:36 and then by Ch r is Rae (4th overall) in 18:45.
