Kazuma Kobori moved t o Rangiora at t he age of 10, and headed along t o t he Rangiora Golf Club wit h his dad and sist er.

Now 16, golf plays a big part in t his t eenagers life.

Kazuma plays at bot h t he Rangiora and Pegasus golf clubs under t he t ut elage of his fat her, and you can find him on a course most days.

His early mot ivat ion was t o beat his sist er Momoka, a very good golfer current ly st udying and playing College golf in Florida, aft er winning a Lydia Ko scholarship.

And t hat mot ivat ion is proving sucessful in driving Kazuma in t he right direct ion.

ON COURSE FOR SUCCESS

In 2017, Kazuma hit the headlines winning not only the under 16, but also the under 19 boys competitions at the 2017 Victorian Boys Championships at Yarra Yarra Golf Club in Australia.

This year in March, he travelled to Vietnam to play in the Faldo Series Asia, at the Laguna Lang Co Golf Club. Sir Nick Faldo hosts this series run all over the world, to give young players a taste of golf at the next level. The Asian series brings together the best players from across the Asian continent and the Pacific. Kazuma finished an outstanding 4th in the U16 event.

More recently Kazuma played in the Australian Boys Amateur Championship in Perth.

This tournament boasts former winners such as Jason Day, Adam Scott, Stuart Appleby, Robert Allenby, and New Zealands own Grant Waite.

Kazuma was the top kiwi participant, and finished 7th overall.

Closer to home, Kazuma also collected the Southland Men's stroke play title. He has also finished 3rd in both the South Island and North Island U19's this year.

The short term goal Kazuma has his sights set on is to win the Canterbury U19 Order of Merit. He is currently leading this, so we will eagerly watch his progress.

The long term is to represent New Zealand at international events.

Well done to; Peter Stevenson - Finalist Coach of the Year, Tania Bailey - Finalist Surf Official of the Year, Aaron Harris - Finalist Innovation of the Year for Development Weekends, and Tom Webb Regional Guard of the Year.

At the Can t er bu r y Bow ls Ch am pion of Ch am pion s even t , Woodend's Jenny Anderson won both the 1st & 2nd Year, and U8's Singles titles.

Rangiora Bowls, Noel Alexander, Doug Paterson, Chris O'Brien, and Rick Day won the Fours title.

The Kaiapoi High School netball team has claimed the final spot for the 2018 Su per Net com pet it ion by defeating Cashmere High School 31-23. It is the first time that Kaiapoi High School have qualified for SuperNet. They join Rangiora High School.

Three Rangiora High School students finished in the top 10 of the Can t er bu r y Secon dar y Sch ools Road Race, at the Christchurch A&P Showgrounds. Quade McLachlan finished 3rd in the 3km Year 9 boys, Ethan McLachlan was 9th in the 3km U16 boys, and Jack Flannigan finished 7th in the 4km Senior boys road race.

North Canterbury Special Olympian Kyle Harpur has been selected for athletics to compete for NZ at the Wor ld Su m m er gam es, M ar ch 2019 in Abu Dh abi.

Another North Canterbury Athlete Amy has also been selected in Equestrian.

And Brent Kemp has been selected as part of the team management.

The Pegasus Blue team won the Kaik ou r a Cu p for the scratch men's golf Matchplay Interclub Competition defeating Culverden 6-0.

Tegen Bishop won the U18 gir ls Joyce & Co Win t er Fr eeze Su r f Com pet it ion at Waikuku Beach last weekend.

Congratulations to North Canterbury Swim Club members Gus Kelliher and Holly Rahurahu, who have been selected in the NZ Sw im Team f or t h e Au st r alian St at e Ch am pion sh ips in Canberra in October.

North Canterbury Footballer Freya Lodge-Whitham has been selected in the NZ Secon dar y Sch ool gir ls U15 f oot ball t eam to travel to Sydney.

Amberley Golf were the winners of the Tem plet on Cu p, men's handicap Interclub competition defeating Kaiapoi Gold.

Amuri Golf won the Gar din er Tr oph y (5th-8th in the Kaikoura Cup competition) defeating Pegasus Red.

On a wet and fairly windless day, the Waimakariri Sailing and Power Boat Club wrapped up their season. A number of hardy souls took the opportunity for one last days racing. Line honours went to Paul from Pleasant Point in Sigrid.

The three clubmates also teamed up to win the South Island Elliott6 Youth Regatta at Naval Point.

A solid season saw Blake Grindley-Jones win the Canterbury Starling Championship from clubmates Flynn Johnson, 2nd, and Dominic Pulley, 5th.

With a base of 100 members, the club is growing, and the popular learn to sail program over the summer is definitely one to look out for next season.

2018 was also the club's 90th Anniversary, with around 100 guests in attendance to celebrate the milestone.

Special Olympics North Canterbury recently hosted the Swimming Ribbon Day at Dudley Aquatic Centre.

Athletes came to compete from not only North Canterbury, but Canterbury, Mid Canterbury, and Marlborough. The event was a day of encouragement, smiles and everyone cheering each other on.

PLAY WITH PRIDE

Mainland set up the Future Pride Development Programme to prepare the next crop of talented girls for higher honours. Girls aged 12-14 were selected from trials in late 2017 and train 3 times a week.

The squad plays against boys in the 13th grade Division One competition a Saturday competition to maximise their improvement.

The programme includes nutrition, injury prevention, strength and conditioning and mental skills. All to help the 16 selected girls become stronger independent athletes.

Waimak United had 5 girls selected in the squad: Maddy George, Charlotte Roche, Freya Lodge-Whitham, Lily Gerrard, and Emma Bainbridge.

Kaiapoi Anglican Vicar, H H Mathias, an avid hockey fan and player back in England, first introduced hockey to New Zealand, forming the Hinemoa-Kaiapoi Hockey Cub in 1895. An unlikely birthplace for NZ Hockey, but the club is still going strong and is proud of its place in history. The club caters for all ages from 4 right up to 74 and have a number of teams across the grades, both on grass and turf, to cater for a wide range of ability and commitment levels.

SHOCKS SURRENDER

Despite being unable to repeat his 2017 class victory in the International Rally of Whangarei, due a broken shock absorber, Matt Summerfield and co-driver and sister Nicole, have made a strong start to the NZ Rally Championship.

On three of the stages, Summerfield was second only to this year 's winner Hayden Paddon, but the broken shock meant limping his way through two stages to reach service. The car had hit something at the begining of stage four. Summerfield's service crew managed to borrow some shocks and get the car back in the rally but they had lost a significant amount of time.

Competitive racing saw them move from 44th at the end of the 5th stage to finish 16th overall. They also gained enough points to remain third in the New Zealand Rally Championship after two rounds.

Despite the set back Matt is pleased to have some miles under his belt in the new Andrew Simms Mitsubishi Mirage, and is looking forward to the next rally, the Canterbury Rally, here at home in North Canterbury, where they will look to defend their 2017 title.

The Canterbury Rally is held on 3rd June and doubles as the third round of both the NZ Rally Championship, and the Mainland Rally series, which Summerfield currently leads. The race will take competitors through the Okuku and Ashley Forests. The first cars leave from Joe's Garage at 9am.

On a cool and damp day, the Amberley Pony Club held their One Day Event at Linfield, the Savill's family farm in Amberley. Athletes and horses competed across the three disciplines; dressage, cross country, and show jumping. Over 150 horses and riders took part in this amazing spectacle of horse riding, and wouldn't happen without all of the judges and crew, and of course event sponsors.

Last weekend saw both the Men's PHOTOS BY MAKSHOTS and Women's Waimak Football teams in National Knockout Cup competitions.

The Premier women fought hard in their Kate Sheppard Cup match against CashmereTech. Tech took the lead just before halftime, but the Waimak girls knew they were still in it, and a good finish by Waimak's Katie Elstob put them back on level terms midway through the second half. It looked like the match would go to extra time but a free kick near the edge of the box with minutes to go was clinically taken and Tech took the match 2-1 to advance to the next round.

In the men's equivalent, Waimak faced Premier League side Coastal Spirit in the Chatham Cup. Always a tough ask against one of the top sides in the grade above CCL, Coastal scored twice in the first half. Waimak battled well for most of the second half holding that scoreline, but the pace and power of the MPL side was too much late in the game as they scored 3 quick and unanswered goals to finish the match 5-0 winners.

The CCL men also faced Premier side Universities in the English Cup (Christchurch Senior Men's Knockout Cup) on Tuesday evening.

Waimak lead the first half after Eirik Lund Andersen found the back of the net. However Universities hit back twice in the second half to win 2-1.

In the UC Championship for secondary school boys, Rangiora High defeated St Bedes 20-17. This weekend they faced Timaru Boys High in Timaru and were defeated again 32-19.

This week they played the Papanui Tigers and won 28-18.

That sits them in third position after 6 rounds.
