Let nature amaze you

The Riihimäki region offers a diverse range of hiking and recreational routes. You can choose a family-friendly walking path or quench your thirst for action with a mountain biking route.

Rugged Samo route of Luutaharju

Pull on your hiking boots and hit the trails!

Admire the diversity of nature on the easy Samo walking route of Luutaharju, taking you through old growth forests and varied ridge terrain. Watch the sun sparkle from the surface of small ponds and let nature embrace you.

The Samo route has some changes in elevation, but the about six-kilometre-long route is not challenging. The circle route starts from the parking area of Komio Nature Reserve.

You can see the Lukkolampi pond, now slowly disappearing due to paludification, at the start of the trail. You will continue your journey towards Komionvuori Hill and its gorgeous views. From there, the path will take you to Luutasuo Swamp, which is still in its natural state. However, you do not need to wade ankle-deep in the swamp water: duckboards will take you over the wetlands. Be careful after rain, though, as the

wooden duckboards may be slippery. The swamp landscapes slowly transitions into the rugged terrain of Luutalammi. Stairs have been built onto the steepest ridges to ease the passage.

Despite the climb, the route is nice and soft to walk on, with paths covered with pine needles. The Samo route ends where it started, on the parking area.

There are signboards along the route, sharing fun and detailed information about the local nature, moulded by the Ice Age, and the flora and fauna in the area.

The route also has a campfire site and outhouses. What could be more perfect than sit down, have a picnic and listen to the wind rustling in the trees! The route has been marked with orange markings, and crossroads have signs for the Samo route.

The municipality of Loppi has invested in accessibility in nature, and the

Samo route also features an accessible section. This is a one-kilometre route built with crushed stone and a layer of finer aggregate. The path is more than a metre wide.

The route starts with a decline towards the shore. The crushed stone path takes you to an accessible bridge, followed by a resting site. The route continues as a crushed stone path to a forest road, circling back to the parking area. The accessible route is demanding, so the mobility device used should be fit for the terrain. An assistant’s help may also be needed in some sections of the route.

Luutaharju’s Samo route is part of the 28-kilometre long Poronpolku hiking route.

Address: Tuhkanummentie 341, Loppi

Resting sites

Take a rest and have a picnic at the many lean-tos or campfire sites along the recreational routes.

Poronpolku, the largest outdoor exercise event in Southern Finland, is always held in Loppi on the last weekend of September.

Hatlamminsuo, Riihimäki

Hatlamminsuo Swamp

Hatlamminsuo is the crown jewel of local nature in Riihimäki. The wetland area is almost in its natural state and serves as a habitat to a diverse range of animals and vegetation. The about a kilometre-long nature path of Hatlamminsuo Swamp starts from the end of Hiihtomajantie. The nature path is mostly built on duckboards, and the area also has a network of several other outdoor routes. At Hatlamminsuo, the changing seasons are truly impressing, from the bright autumn colours to the silent snow-covered swamp of the winter and from an energetic, active spring to the summer’s gentle light and blooming marsh rosemary.

Starting point: Hiihtomajantie 105, Riihimäki

Melkutin

A circle route around the crown jewel of Loppi nature, Lake Iso-Melkutin, is an excellent day trip destination for the whole family. This easy 6.5-kilometre-long route travels through hilly forests and lake landscapes moulded by the Ice Age. Melkutin is also a great destination for canoeing and mountain biking. Thanks to its crystal clear water, it is especially popular among divers. The route has two campsites, where you can stay overnight in a tent or a lean-to.

Starting point: Tauluntie 142, Räyskälä.

Kakslammi Nature Reserve

On Kakslammi nature trail in Ryttylä, Hausjärvi, you can familiarise yourself with a sunlit environment. Along the route touring the nature reserve, you can find many plant species typical to forests growing in ridge environments, as well as rare and endangered insect species. The nature trail features an insect hotel made from twigs, an ecosystem hotel, and signboards with information about insect life. The nearby Ykslammi Pond with its beautiful ridge views has a beach, a fitness trail and a DiscGolf Park.

Starting point: Riihiviidantie 616, Hausjärvi

Kirsikkapuisto Cherry Tree Orchard

Kirsikkapuisto Park and its beautiful spring blooms enchant visitors with their beauty. The accessible outdoor route has a lean-to, wooden gym and fitness equipment and signboards with information about the area’s different tree species. Kirsikkapuisto is along trunk road 54 and it is easy to reach by car or by foot from Oitti Train Station. The area surrounding Kirsikkapuisto also features a dog park, a summer grill, a rug washing station and the Puujoki Beach.

Starting point: Riihimäentie 3478, Oitti

Cycling

Pikkupässi cycling route is a total of 51 kilometres long. It follows the route of the old narrow train tracks built between Hyvinkää and Karkkila in the beginning of 20th century, travelling along the old railway bank part of the way. In Loppi, both the route and the railway line travel through the sparsely populated Läyliäinen district. There are signposts along the route, detailing the history of the railway and its surroundings.

The Poronpolku route in Loppi has mountain biking trails ranging from 5 to 55 kilometres. The Melkutin trail is the easiest; the longest routes are challenging at times due to changes in elevation. Part of the trail goes along forest roads and paved roads. There are rest sites and accommodation options available along the route, as well as a village shop.

Erkylä in Hausjärvi also has mountain biking trails that offer both challenge and amazing views.

Canoeing

The Kaartjoki canoeing route in Loppi leads from Lake Kaartjärvi through Kaartlammi Pond and River Kaartjoki to Cafe Myllykoski along trunk road 54. There are two resting sites along the route. The route is 10–12 kilometres long, starting from either Sähkönokka (Räyskäläntie 682) or Syvälahti (Räyskäläntie 850). The Punelia canoeing route travels through the lovely lake views of Pikku-Punelia and Punelia. The length of the route is about 10 kilometres. You can set off either from Takala (Takalantie 153) or Punelia Dam (Jokilantie 228).

The Vanajavesi canoeing route in Hausjärvi goes from Lake Mommilanjärvi to River Puujoki. You will have to carry your canoe for a short distance to go around Vuolteenkoski Dam, near Oitti. In Hausjärvi, you can start your route from Haminankylä (Saitantie 1) or from Oitti (Riihimäentie 3471).

Flower power in Atsaleapuisto Park

Atsaleapuisto – Azalea Park – in Vahteristo, Riihimäki, is a nature attraction where azaleas of different colours shine as bright as the sun. The more than 200 azaleas planted in the park brighten up the early summer. The azaleas will be in bloom for about three weeks, with peak season taking place in

mid-June. Azaleas are sensitive flowers: too much heat makes them wither quickly, and too much rain destroys the blooms.

The azalea park has an accessible path. Please keep to the marked pathways in the park to avoid harming the azaleas as their roots grow near the surface.

The azalea park is in the Vahteristo Nature Reserve. The easiest way to visit the park is from the parking area of Uhkola recreational area, which is about 300 metres away from the park along a fitness trail.

Address: Vahteristo recreational area’s parking area

Fall in love with culture

Have you visited the Finnish Glass Museum? And do you know how to blow glass? The Riihimäki region offers a variety of cultural activities. The region has the oldest local history museum in the Kanta-Häme region, and the historical Marshal’s Cabin – the Hunting Cabin of Mannerheim, Marshal of Finland.

GLASS AND CULTURE

Enchanting glass

For friends of design, the Finnish Glass Museum in Riihimäki is a destination that can’t be missed. The museum has been in its current location since 1981, in a building designed by Tapio Wirkkala. The building itself, which has previously been used as e.g. a glass factory, is a sight worth seeing.

The museum’s extensive basic collection takes visitors on a trip through the 4,000-year history of glass making and highlights items by well-known Finnish designers. The Finnish Glass Museum provides a comprehensive view of Finnish glass production and creates experiences for its visitors. The museum also features many popular design and everyday glass items familiar from many of our childhood homes.

The changing exhibitions always bring something new also to returning visitors. The changing exhibitions present both Finnish and international top talents of glass art and design from across the world.

Twice a year, a popular glass collectors’ day, Lasipäivä, is held at the museum, offering visitors the chance to make discoveries and add to their collections.

Visit the Glass Museum’s website for up-to-date information on current exhibitions.

Riihimäki is a known glass city, even though industrial glass manufacturing in Riihimäki came to an end in 1990. The Riihimäki glass factory manufactured glass bottles and jars, dishes, lamps and glass art. Glass lives on in Riihimäki.

Hyttikortteli residential area

A stone throw’s away from the Finnish Glass Museum is Hyttikortteli, a residential area built for the glass factory’s workers in the early 20th century. The idyllic wooden and brick buildings are now private homes. In Hyttikortteli, visitors may stop by glass blower Pekka Paunila’s Potti, his combined glass studio and shop.

Experience the art of glass blowing

Glass artist Marja Hepo-aho works in a glass studio at the former Riihimäki glass factory, together with master glass blower Kari Alakoski.

The products of Studio Mafka combine traditional glass working with modern but timeless design. Hepo-aho brings unique objects as part of everyday life. Human stories are often behind her inspiration. The artist wants to create durable, practical and high-quality glass objects.

“I often seek inspiration from mythical stories, folktales and national heritage. Objects meant for day-to-day use are often clearly in Scandic style, but art glass offers more room for freedom. My works are also often statements on the relationship between humans and nature.”

Visitors get to watch the process of glass blowing live. Professional glass blowing is fascinating and the creation process of a glass item is exciting to see.

You can also contact the studio to book an experience evening starting with a glass blowing show. Afterwards, the participants can design and blow a unique glass item. After the objects have cooled down, they are signed, and participants will get to go home with a lovely new piece of decor! The studio also offers longer courses that study glass-making in more detail.

“Being open with others is important, which is why our doors are always open! The glass studio shows you how a Finnish, ethical glass objects are made. You are very welcome to come by and see how mouth-blown glass items and art glass are made!”

Riihimäki Summer Theatre

Rich theatre life in the Riihimäki region

Riihimäki Theatre is a small, elegant and warm-hearted audience favourite.

The theatre relies on simple and sweet programme aimed at regular theatre audiences. The theatre puts out a couple of its own productions every year, and the popular visiting performances complement the programme.

Riihimäki also has a youth theatre which offers basic degree studies in theatre art, as well as theatre performances for both children and adults.

The Riihimäki summer theatre was renewed in 2023. The premises are now more comfortable for both audience members and the performers. The audience does not have to worry about bouts of summer rain in the covered stands. During the intermission, the audience can enjoy the offerings of a café and a bar.

In addition to the annual main show, the programme of Riihimäki Summer Theatre also includes a children’s show for the whole family and a variety of drag or standup shows, among other performances. The theatre area can also be used for holding music, dance and film performances, singalongs and trade fairs.

The summer theatre activities are mainly organised by the power duo of Riihimäki theatre life, Riihimäki Theatre and Riihimäki Youth Theatre.

The summer theatre is only about a kilometre away from the Riihimäki Railway Station.

Miinan Monttu is a summertime culture oasis in the middle of beautiful nature in Hausjärvi. The summer theatre received its name – loosely translated as Miina’s Pit – from an old woman called Pit-Miina who used to live in Turkahauta. Her house

was in the bottom of the large hole. During Miina’s era, the village had a strong sense of community and a tradition of working together, which still live on today. The pit no longer has an old woman’s house in it, but rather a performance stage and audience stands, covered by a roof that protects the audience against both heat and rain – ‘Miina’s bonnet’. In the fresh country air, with cuckoos’ calls in the distance, the whole family will enjoy watching and listening to the summer theatre performances and music concerts.

Another great summertime destination is Loppi Theatre in Taidemäki, Sajaniemi. It offers light-hearted summer programme, visiting standup shows and summer concerts. The Sajaniemi Summer Theatre is covered with a roof.

Bring a friend with you and come enjoy the Finnish summer and the theatre’s entertaining and delightful performances!

Rest your senses on Loppi church hill

The red wooden church on top of a steep hill is one of the oldest still remaining in Finland. The old, simplistic and undecorated Loppi church has a sense of ancient peace. The church is a simple and fascinating holy place for modern people to pause at and breathe in silence.

The old church of Loppi received its name from Saint Bridget of Sweden in the 17th century, but in the language of the common folk it gradually changed

to ‘Santa Pirjo’. In addition to the bright red church, the entire church hill of Loppi is part of a built cultural heritage site of national significance, as defined by the Finnish Heritage Agency.

In summer, this log-built church with a wood shingle roof can be admired in guided tours. Evening services are held once a week. The church is closed during the winter season. The church is about one kilometre from Loppi village centre towards Pilpala.

An old residential building, named as

Lukkarin puustelli – Bell-ringer’s residence – underneath the church hill serves as a local history museum. The museum’s main building dates back to late 19th century and represents the Carolean style. The museum’s basic collection consists of more than a 1,000 objects, oldest ones dating back to 17th century. The museum area also has granaries and farming equipment.

LIFE ON THE COUNTRYSIDE

Pause by a field

Sometimes, when we are exhausted with all the city noise, we long for the peace of the countryside. You can find plenty of it in Loppi and Hausjärvi.

Loppi

Charming Mommila’s Kyläpuoti village shop

The number one destination for anyone looking for some nostalgia is Mommila, a village shop of thousands of goods and stories.

The boutique owner Samppa Hartikainen has created a fun mix of golden oldies for the village boutique and the village shop museum.

Old objects wait behind every corner, delighting the visitors. The items have been collected from all across Finland, and some have been received as donations. The village shop museum showcases items and various product

packages from several decades.

Visitors can also step into an old mobile shop van, named Martti, and admire the products of past decades and their colourful packages. Martti also holds a crateful of fizzy drinks donated by singer J.Karjalainen.

The area also houses a telephone booth museum, where you can browse an old fashioned phone book, and a small kiosk museum from the 1960s. The goods sold in the little antique shop in the outbuilding are authentic; there are no newly produced ‘retro kitsch’ collectibles here. You could find

familiar-looking tins reminding you of your childhood or bring home a rustic watering can.

Milk churn stands are an integral part of Finnish nostalgia, and of course there is one on the Mommila yard. Ice cream has never tasted better than when enjoying one on the milk churn stand!

You can also have a cup of coffee on the outdoor terrace or in a sweet parlour where time seems to stand still. The cafeteria sells pastries, ice cream, fizzy drinks, traditional sweets and delicacies from local producers. An old jukebox creates a nostalgic feeling, and you can even see an Uuno Turhapuro costume showcased in a vitrine as a loving tribute to the famous Finnish film character.

Mommila’s Kyläpuoti is famous for its summer events, for example the old automobile evening where the large American antique and vintage cars sit side by side with the tiny Citroën 2CVs. The shop also organises quizzes and singalong evenings. Dozens of motorcyclists sometimes flock to the place for the weekly motorcyclist café evenings. The summer season in topped off with a beautiful Venetian Festival. The Mommila village shop is such a charming place that it has gained even international visibility.

The village shop is open from May Day to the beginning of autumn.

Enjoy unhurried relaxation

Would you like to try a yoga class in a hayloft or a gym workout in the forest? Both of these are possible in the Riihimäki region, among many other experiences.

Well-being from forest

Aforest is almost a sacred place, with a proven stress-alleviating effect. Anu Kosonen’s Pirteeks offers an authentic forest experience. Relaxing and peaceful. Pirteeks provides forest experiences both through bootcamps and retreats. In forest gym, the exercises foster an accepting and gracious environment.

The Finnish nature offers travellers diverse seasonal conditions. Luckily, the weather does not matter when it comes to forest gym, bootcamp or retreat. At Pirteeks, visitors will get to enjoy outdoors both in cold winter conditions and in summer heat. Thunder is the only weather condition preventing outdoor exercises.

The programme is tailored to the customer’s requests. The exercises can be hard army-style workouts or gentle stretches. Forest yoga is also very

popular. If you don’t want to work on your muscles, you can focus on admiring nature.

The client will get to express their wishes through an initial survey. Visitors can come and join a bootcamp based on their fitness level, and differences in fitness levels will also be taken into consideration in group settings. Workouts can also be accompanied by wellness coaching, such as customised diets, sleep and stress management, mindfulness, and various exercises with horses and sheep.

Pirteeks mini retreat is a three-hour long forest walk in a small group. The walk helps alleviate stress as even just a short time in nature offers an experience of peace and relaxation. The retreat has been built in a way that all its different elements deepen the experience step by step. The exercises are carefully considered and safe, and the

retreat is possible in every season, even in the dark.

The retreat is guided by a top professional of well-being who will assess client needs from several different perspectives. After the walk, participants will be taken to see the animals and experience presence training exercises assisted by animals.

Retreats can be booked at a desired time or participants can join in during the days stated on the website.

Forest workouts are available all year round on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6 pm and on Sundays at 10 am.

If you would like a break from your day-to-day life and get in touch with yourself and the nature, come to Pirteeks to find wellness in the forest!

SUMMER ATTRACTIONS

Let summer inspire you

You can pamper yourself in the summer with a refreshing dip into the Riihimäki outdoor pool or a lovely visit to one of the local unique summer cafés.

Outdoor pool - the summer oasis of Riihimäki

When the weather gets hot, find your way to the outdoor pool in Riihimäki Sports Park. The outdoor pool was completed in 1956 and is very similar in style to the Helsinki Swimming Stadium.

The swimming pool is a great place to spend a summer day with friends, splashing around and eating your packed snacks. And if you are still hun-

gry, you can also buy something to eat at the pool.

The facilities offer something for swimmers of all skill levels. The youngest ones in the family can enjoy two children’s pools and a slide, and more experienced swimmers can exercise in a 50-metre pool. More adventurous visitors can test their bravery in a diving tower. If Finnish summer is not showing its best side, you can always visit a

sauna to warm up.

The outdoor pool is open from the beginning of June to the end of August. The outdoor pool is connected to Riihimäki Swimming Hall, which was fully renovated in 2024. The swimming hall offers facilities such as a big slide, a cold water pool and a jacuzzi.

Address: Salpausseläntie 16, Riihimäki
