The Cloudy cups are double-layer hand-blown glass cups produced in two different colour combinations – black and white, and colourless/transparent with white. Part of the process is executed in small-scale production using moulds, but employing a manual blow-moulding technique, which allows for vivid colour coatings. These special vessels are then manually treated so that the top layer is gradually sanded until the bottom layer of glass is exposed. And the manual machining that follows allows for a soft, uneven structure reminiscent of accumulating clouds shot through with sunlight.

While the poetic and the ephemeral might be considered gratuitous luxuries today, we will look increasingly to technology and techniques that satisfy our need for a sense of calm warmth and composure, if only for certain fleeting moments. And in a world where we find ourselves increasingly alienated, we turn to the intimacy of reflection both literal and metaphorical. Light and tactility are two of the fundamentals to which we can return, anytime, anywhere. Similarly, we return to the art of making, to the basics of materials, materiality and craftsmanship, and on a more personal level. Transcending the anonymous will be central to our wellbeing, indeed survival.
