VULGARIS XII Wine Studiolo

Back in the Renaissance, wealthy humanists shut themselves up in “cabinets” or secluded rooms furnished with rich inlaid paneling, where they read, studied, and wrote – and stored their valuable objects like books and scientific instruments. These early learned man caves they called studiolo.

Centuries later, we have the Vulgaris Wine Studio, a free-standing cabinet for storing wines, wine glasses and related accessories. Whether wine can be equated with books and learning is a matter of interpretation, but the thoughtful user who respects and treasures their passionate personal interest would likely appreciate the gesture.

As our lives become more challenging, complex and dispersed, people look to symbols of stability and personal connection with the things they hold dear. Hence the wine lover chooses a dedicated wine cabinet for the wines she holds dear, and all that goes with it.

The cabinets are carefully crafted from Slovenian cherry wood dried in its own dedicated drying room, and every component part but the hardware is made in a home workshop. Manca Kemperl sees to the formal design of the cabinets – which measure 610 mm x 450 mm x 1510 – while the hand-carved and imprinted motif for each piece is the domain of visual artist Nina Koželj, with individual theme-titles like Forget Me Not, Goodnight, My Dear and similar.

Every passion has its cherished place, and that sensibility establishes an integral relationship with a well-designed, locally-crafted product – a sensitivity that can give rise to a local market and a trade in the passionately sensible. And now a walnut wood studio is currently under construction. The future of the studiolo never looked brighter.
