As we become more aware of the things we do and how we do them, become more environmentally aware and engaged in issues like climate change, travel, and the movement of goods and people, things are changing. Similarly – and as a result – people will become increasingly self-sufficient, both in food production and in object making. In the future, we might well begin to slow down and spend more time at home, thinking about how to get or make the things we need; begin to collect our waste and make things from it.
Toasted furniture combines elements of design, innovation, and ecology. Everyday waste plastics, like cleaning product packaging, are recycled with the help of a simple and innovative tool – the toaster – to produce durable, waterproof plastic panels. These panels can then serve as the basis for the manufacture of, among other things, furniture.
Each piece of furniture produced is unique, as every panel is itself unique, with the emphasis here on the material, patterns and functionality, so that each individual product serves its purpose. And all products can simply be re-formed into new plastic sheets, as they are made from just one type of material – HDPE high density polyethylene HDPP polypropylene; or they can disassembled (unscrewed) and re-assembled into a new, different product. Looking forward, we people of the future will make objects in accordance with our specific needs and principles: a piece of furniture on which to sit, one to store our belongings, and another to hold our books and notebooks full of our many thoughts and ideas for the days ahead.
