Cutting Board & Drawers

On the Cutting Edge

Drawer 2
This cutting/serving board is actually the by-product of massive-wood furniture and kitchen module production – like the studio’s own kitchen drawer unit – whereby smaller pieces and 4x4 cm blocks of unfinished red oak, from which boards are hewn, are often left behind and discarded as waste.
This special board is designed as an end-grain butcher’s block, traditionally used by butchers and in professional kitchens as a highly durable work surface. The specific fabrication process produces a pattern of squares with a symmetrical cross section, which in turn creates a lace-like effect.
The board is cut in a circular shape that brings out its particularly graphic character – not unlike their interpretation of the classic drawer unit that features a tower of contrasting drawers made of radial oak inserted into a spatial mesh construction of bleached maple.
As for the cutting/ serving boards, each bears a serial number and employs soft feet for safe and convenient use. And they’re available in three sizes – S, M and L. And despite the fact that the manufacturing process is the same for all boards, each board is actually different due to the original character of the wood cuts, so they’re all actually unique pieces.
Ultimately, both the drawer unit and cutting/serving board express a decidedly positive outlook, one that looks to a future that is cleaner, calmer and more thoughtful; and one where rampant mass production and consumption, temporary solutions and untold waste are relics of our irresponsible, short-sighted past. The home of tomorrow will value longevity, functionality and emotional attachment to the product. That may be asking a lot, but our future is on the chopping block – so let’s get cooking, with a taste for something better.
