Pitstop

Pitstop is the result of studying seating and sitting practices all over the world, and the subsequent development of a very particular kind of chair. Particular because it only offers the user seating for a limited time. As the Pitstop provides only a minimum of support it encourages people to stop sitting and move. This way it seeks to find a balance between our conventional perception of the chair as an object of comfort and rest, and as a purely utilitarian object – one not intended for prolonged sitting, but instead offering pause.

We have turned into increasingly sedentary creatures. Today we sit – at home, at work, in front of our computers, and sit some more. And our sitting habits run contrary to human nature, our muscles lose tone and atrophy, and we suffer more pressure on our spine and joints. No matter how ergonomic chairs simply do not comply with our true, basic nature – as hunters and gatherers in constant motion. With this in mind, Pitstop goes off- piste in terms of conventional ergonomics to put people back in motion.

Construction, distribution and maintenance are all designed to be friendly and simple, for everyone in the chain: it’s constructed of metal and wood, without glues and similar; the wood is a basic biomass product; it’s stackable and flat-packed in cardboard for efficient distribution; it’s easy to both assemble and disassemble; replacement parts can be ordered online and easily installed; and end-of-use recycling is simple and straightforward.

And not only is Pitstop a stool, but it can also be used as a table base, a hanger and more, making it flexible and extending the use-life of the materials and inputs involved.
