Products of the future will be de-materialised, using as few of the scarce raw materials available as possible, and an absolute minimum of parts/elements. Similarly, the future of illumination will be all about the light itself, and less about the actual physical product. And It will be about finding new ways of controlling and channelling light, about bending and twisting it.
The multifaceted surface of the reflector – made from moulded and polished thin aluminium sheet metal – “bends” or redirects the light from the single LED light source and focuses it in a single direction, instead of dispersing it all over the lit surface. This way users get more intense light exactly where they need it. And thanks to the big round reflector, which can be freely rotated around its axis, shadows are very soft and bright, which makes work – or whatever you’re up to – more enjoyable.
The lamp is easy to disassemble and thus easy to repair and dispose of. Disposal is easy, as the only materials used in the Lighthouse other than the electrical cables are aluminium and glass, which are both highly recyclable. (Glass and aluminium can be recycled over and over again in a true closed loop; and recycling aluminium requires only a fraction of the energy required to produce new metal.)
