Naturally Optimistic

Today, a truly sustainable culture may be the only future that can inspire real optimism in us. Technology is making it increasingly possible to work independently of location. Self-sufficient environmentally-friendly food production is becoming both increasingly compelling and inevitable, together with the idea of a culture that nurtures a direct relationship with the environment.

The minimalist wooden construction of the henhouse, which is surrounded by a simple metal mesh, takes its shape from the golden section. The box/ hut, which stands suspended a full meter off the ground, is accessible from below and can be closed off from the outside at night. It’s a perfect 1x1x1m cube and serves as a shelter for sleeping and laying; the eggs can be retrieved from outside the henhouse at the back of the structure. The ceiling of the box is perforated with holes for ventilation that take the form of the blueprint for our galaxy – because after a brief yet extensive survey of religions and origin stories it seems the universe emerged from an egg.

A gilded egg with an inscription in ancient Greek is affixed to the henhouse, which reads “God always uses geometry.” So the owner of a hen can always hope that one of their hens will produce a golden egg that will hatch and produce something new. Surely cause for optimism if ever there was one.
