It’s about time. Duavita & Shunga introduce individuality and ‘‘randomness’’ into mass production. With the help of computer generated parametrics a scribble-like graphic is inscribed atop a repeated pattern.
For today, the old familiar notion of an industrially produced good as repetition is gone. So both the Duavita and Shunga designs look both back and forward, optimistically yet soberly, playing as they do with classic wallpaper design archetypes.
But the designs aren’t printed, they’re woven (including the black scribble-like graphic element) that’s reminiscent of a ballpoint pen drawing made a child would – or used to, back in the day – make. Owing to the random positioning of the black scribble each meter is unique, even though it’s actually machine- and not man-made.
Here the choice of materials is simple: a durable polyester blend is a standard upholstery textile, with recycled PET bottles and other plastic waste spun into new polyester yarns. Which in the end means a blend of 75% jacquard woven recycled polyester and 25% cotton almost 1.5 metres wide. It’s a case of repetition with no repetition, producing a compelling and responsible one of a foretelling kind.
