Radiator Line

Caution, D-tour Ahead

Radiator Line

A square steel tube bent to form a continuous zigzag becomes a towel-drying radiator. This exercise in lockdown neo-survivalist aesthetics explores the sculptural value of a product that is often recognised as a non-design interior element. The path of the D-toured water here is highlighted, transforming and subverting function into fashion. The high-glam component also gets a serious upgrade with the use of high-gloss automotive lacquer, which lends it the look and feel of a shiny automotive product.

The range of radiators on the market compared to other domestic products is curiously disproportionate, in view of just how simple they are and what they do is. This detour of a radiator in particular was created out of a special need – in this auspicious case, in the course of renovating an old apartment.

In order to make the product air-tight, multiple welding techniques have been used and tested – which techniques are slated for further development. The plan is to create a second version fashioned out of a round tube featuring curved lines. A zigzag and the curved version would conclude the series; and both would offer the choice of a number of colours. The road to rebuilding is a long and laborious, albeit creative one.
