new director, new direction Dr. Petra Garnjost gets down to business in her new post. At her welcoming reception in February, Dr. Petra Garnjost outlined some of the changes she hoped to see during her time as Director. She said that it was the vision of Sacred Heart to contribute and to offer more to Luxembourg and the Greater Region. In the future, there will be changes to the programme to ensure that there is a real relevance (for example for managerial positions), a strengthening with business partners and better networking with local, regional and other universities. She added that she did not believe that the other local institutions – most notably the University of Luxembourg and the Campus of the Miami University in Luxembourg – were in competition, but rather could benefit from a M. C. closer relationship. (see also March paperJam page 74). ||

elevator cartel fined Nico Daubenfeld, founder of General Technic, which later became General Technic-Otis Luxembourg, “shocked”. In February the EU fined Otis Elevator Co. and four other elevator and escalator makers 1.3 billion US for allegedly running an illegal cartel. The antitrust-regulating EU Commission accused the companies of “rigging bids, fixing prices, carving up markets and exchanging proprietary information to increase their profits in installing and maintaining elevators and escalators in Belgium, Germany, Luxembourg and The Netherlands between at least 1995 and 2004.” Otis received a fine of 225 million euros. Otis parent, United Technologies Corp., said it would appeal the amount. “We are in shock,” said Nico Daubenfeld, Managing Director of the number one company in the sector in Luxembourg and a 2006 nominee for “Entrepreneur of the year”. “It may be that Otis in the US said they were appealing the fine but this may or may not be the reality. There have been no decisions. We are still speaking to lawyers. The fine is crazy. It has nothing do with economic reality.” || M. C.
