Skype – Disruptive to telcos or added value? Has Skype effectively nuked the revenue models of telcos all over the world or does the growing Skype “eco-system” offer a new world of opportunities? Photos: David Laurent
FirstTuesday hosted a panel discussion on Skype’s impact on the telecommunication industry with speakers from Siemens, Skype, TheCloud, VoIPGate, Voxbone and guest Michael Jackson, Skype’s Director of Operations. Moderated by Hedda Pahlson-Moller, Evaluserve, the panel debated the pros and cons of the paradigm shift to Skype and hit on such topics as the future direction of the industry’s technologies, the durability of Skype’s economic model, and the extent and attractiveness of future collaborations between Skype and other “telco” players. Pahlson-Moller said that, “even with its tremendous growth, VoIP and P2P services have not substituted telco operators in a zero-sum game, but have rather been used as a value-added service on top of fixed lines.” Michael Jackson said his role at the event was to “dispel the myths of Skype’s disruption of the industry.” The growing Skype “eco-system” will involve an increasingly complex web of partners. || M.
