Jean-Claude Juncker, Prime Minister of Luxembourg, spoke on, “Le positionnement politique et economique du Luxembourg dans l'Europe elargie” at the Hemicycle, Kirchberg

Jean-Claude Juncker: “A country as rich as Luxembourg has a responsibility.” A very tired but amusing Juncker addressed the annual International Chambers Luncheon at the Hemicycle, Kirchberg. A three hour lunch ensued that was a true Luxembourg experience excellent Italian wines, speech in French, conversation at the various tables in multiple languages – in the presence of Ambassadors and/or representatives of the American Chamber of Commerce, British Chamber of Commerce, La Camera di Commercio Italo, la Chambre de Commerce Chinoise, la Chambre de Commerce d’Espagne, and la Chambre de Commerce. You could almost forget what decade it was, until you tuned into Juncker’s speech, which was about the current political and economic position of Luxembourg within an enlarged Europe. The spectre of the Arcelor hostile takeover bid hung over the room as Juncker spoke about people inside Luxembourg, the very country at the heart of the foundation of modern Europe, fearing enlargement, fearing the loss of their small elegant status, only to be absorbed into an expanding Europe. Juncker reminded the nearly 50 invited guests that as Europe grows larger, Luxembourg’s opportunities will grow larger too, as it opens up to the world economically and culturally. He spoke about forays into Latin American and the need to build a strong, performant and durable economy. He reminded people between the third and the fourth course that, “a country as rich as Luxembourg has a responsibility to do what it can to alleviate world hunger and to help those in need.” Of course Mittal and Arcelor came up. How could it not? Juncker proclaimed, “… it makes no difference that Mittal is an Indian. He could just as easily come from Belgium,” disputing the accusations of racism and protectionism, that some say are behind Luxembourg’s firm “no” stance, as spurious. || M. C.
