LA PETITE HISTOIRE
When we think of “men’s suits," the first thing that comes to mind are cities like London and Milan. And yet, the largest supplier of men’s suits in the United States is run from Montréal. Everything started when Alvin Cramer Segal, a native New Yorker, moved in with his mother in Montréal in 1948. Quickly, his learning disabilities forced him to quit school and start working in his stepfather's suit factory: Peerless Clothing. Later promoted to the head of the company, he took advantage of NAFTA to significantly increase his presence in the American market and thus have the company profit from resounding success in the global men’s suit industry. His impressive roster of fashion design brands, including big names like Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein and DKNY, is a reflection of his constant expansion and is present in the vast majority of department stores found stateside.
W H AT Y O U N E E D T O K N O W Of the 10 million suits produced every year, 1 million are made in the Montréal factory where 1,200 employees of 60 different nationalities work—something the company is really proud of! Peerless Clothing also boasts the most sophisticated EDI (Electronic Data Interchange) system in the industry, which allows it to respond to client orders in record time. Well done!

Quand on pense « complets pour hommes », c’est d’abord des villes comme Londres et Milan qui nous viennent en tête. Pourtant, c’est de Montréal qu’opère le plus grand fournisseur d’habits pour hommes aux États-Unis. Tout a commencé quand Alvin Cramer Segal, New-Yorkais d’origine, a emménagé avec sa mère à Montréal en 1948. Rapidement, ses difficultés d’apprentissage le poussent à abandonner l’école et il commence alors à travailler à l’usine de complets pour hommes de son beau-père : Vêtements Peerless. Plus tard promu à la tête de l’entreprise, il profitera de l’ALÉNA pour augmenter significativement sa présence dans le marché américain et ainsi faire jouir la compagnie d’un succès retentissant dans l’industrie mondiale du costume masculin. Son impressionnant éventail de marques de créations mode, incluant de grands noms comme Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein et DKNY, est de loin le reflet de sa constante expansion et est présent dans la majorité des grands magasins de nos voisins du sud.
