CULTURE CORNER RAMADAN Ramadan, in Islam, the ninth month of the Muslim calendar and the holy month of fasting. It begins and ends with the appearance of the crescent moon.

Because the Muslim calendar year is shorter than the Gregorian calendar year, Ramadan begins 10–12 days earlier each year, allowing it to fall in every season throughout a 33-year cycle.

Islamic tradition states that it was during Ramadan, on the “Night of Power” (Laylat al-Qadr)—commemorated on one of the last 10 nights of Ramadan, usually the 27th night—that God revealed to the Prophet Muhammad the Qurʾān, Islam’s holy book, “as a guidance for the people.” For Muslims, Ramadan is a period of introspection, communal prayer (ṣalāt) in the mosque, and reading of the Qurʾān. God forgives the past sins of those who observe the holy month with fasting, prayer, and faithful intention.

HOLI Holi has been celebrated in the Indian subcontinent for centuries, with poems documenting celebrations dating back to the 4th century CE. It marks the beginning of spring after a long winter, symbolic of the triumph of good over evil. It is celebrated in March, corresponding to the Hindu calendar month of Phalguna. In 2024, Holi begins March 25th.

There are varying accounts of Holi’s origin mentioned in several works of ancient Indian literature. According to one popular version of the story, an evil king became so powerful that he forced his subjects to worship him as their god. But to the king’s ire, his son Prahlada continued to be an ardent devotee of the Hindu deity Lord Vishnu. The angry king plotted with his sister, Holika, to kill his son. Holika, who was immune to fire, tricked Prahlada to sit in a pyre with her. When the pyre was lit, the boy’s devotion to Lord Vishnu helped him walk away unscathed while Holika, from whom the festival derives its name, was burned to death despite her immunity.

NATIONAL COLORECTAL CANCER MONTH Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in the United States, behind only lung cancer. Colorectal cancer awareness is important because many cases of cancer of the colon or rectum are preventable. Screening by colonoscopy can prevent this cancer because precancerous polyps found during the procedure can be removed at the same time. Furthermore, colonoscopy can also detect the cancer at early stages, when treatment is more likely to be successful.

The five-year relative survival rate for cancer localized to the colon or rectum is 90.9%, according to the National Cancer Institute’s Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program. The survival rate drops significantly as the cancer spreads beyond those organs.

Cancer of the colon or rectum is more common in men than women. It is also more common among African Americans than people of other races. The median age of diagnosis in the United States is 66 years, while about 78 percent of newly diagnosed patients are aged 55 and older.

Many traditional Irish family meals have been passed down from generation to generation and represent an integral part of the national identity. From warm soups and potatoes to stews and soups, here are some traditional Irish recipes for you to enjoy. Below you’ll find several great traditional Irish dishes to make for St. Patrick’s Day!

GUINNESS BEEF STEW Ingredients: 2.5 lbs beef, cut into 1.5 in chunks 1 lb baby potatoes 4 carrots, roughly chopped 1 small onion, chopped 4 celery stalks, chopped 5-6 garlic cloves, chopped 1 12oz bottle Guinness stout 2 cups beef broth 1/2 cup balsamic vinegar (or red wine vinegar) 1 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce 2 sprigs fresh rosemary (or 2 tsp dried) 7-8 sprigs fresh thyme (or 2 tsp dried) 3 bay leaves Salt & pepper to taste 2 Tbsp cooking oil 2-3 Tbsp flour Directions: 1. In a skillet over medium high heat, add oil then beef chunks. Give a quick sear to all sides. Don't overcrowd, work in batches if necessary.

2. In slow cooker, add half of veggies, then meat, herbs, and chopped garlic then remaining veggies. Add liquids. Everything should be submerged. If needed add additional water or broth.

3. Cover and cook on low for 8 hours or high for 4 hours.

4. Mix 2-3 tablespoons of flour with cold water. Gradually stir into cooked stew until you get your desired consistency.

MAIN STREET KITCHEN & BAR When it comes to iconic St. Patrick's Day drinks, Guinness is probably the first that comes to mind. Indeed, sipping on an Irish beer feels like a holiday requirement. But Guinness is just one of the many fantastic brews hailing from the Emerald Isle, all of which deserve to be enjoyed on St. Paddy's Day.

GUINNESS BRAISED SHORT RIB Ingredients: ½ cup all-purpose flour 4 pound beef short ribs 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 large onion (chopped) 1 large carrot (chopped) 2 stalks celery (chopped) 6 cloves garlic

2 tablespoons tomato paste 1 can Guinness stout 2 cups beef broth 2 sprigs fresh rosemary 4 sprigs fresh thyme 1 tablespoon fresh parsley salt and pepper to taste

Directions: 1. Preheat oven to 375F 2. In a shallow plate whisk together the flour, salt and pepper. Dredge the short ribs through the flour mixture, making sure all sides are covered in flour.

3. In a large Dutch oven, heat the olive oil over medium-high heat. Add the ribs, only half of them at a time, do not over crowd them and sear them on all sides, about 3 to 4 minutes per side until browned. Repeat with remaining ribs. Remove the ribs from the pot and set aside.

4. In the same pot add the onions, carrot, celery, garlic and saute for about 3 to 4 minutes or until the onion has softened and the garlic is aromatic.

5. Stir in the tomato paste. Add the Guinness stout, beef broth, rosemary and thyme to the pot and bring to a boil. Season with salt and pepper, if needed.

6. Add the short ribs back to the pot and cover with a lid. Place the pot in the oven and cook for 2 ½ to 3 hours, until the ribs fall off the bone.

7. Remove the rosemary and thyme from the pot, then garnish with parsley.

Serve hot over mashed potatoes.
