THE BEST HOLIDAY AT LAKE SAIMAA
In South Karelia, one rule guides our way of life: Enjoy the moment. Lake Saimaa, Finland’s largest lake, offers the purest and most inspiring environment for your holiday. Here, there are no expectations or pressures – just relax and let your everyday worries drift away.
The region’s nine municipalities, led by Lappeenranta and Imatra, warmly welcome you. Located just a couple of hours from Helsinki, Lappeenranta and Imatra are easily accessible and packed with charm.
Lappeenranta boasts highlights like the historic Fortress of Lappeenranta and its beautiful harbour area, often called the ”Monaco of Finland.” Imatra, on the other hand, is famed for the roaring Imatrankoski Rapids and the majestic Valtionhotelli, a castle-like hotel nearby.
Though small in size, Lappeenranta and Imatra are internationally minded and culturally diverse. LUT University and LAB University of Applied Sciences draw students from all over the globe, adding to the vibrant atmosphere.
Lappeenranta Airport connects the region to Northern Italy with flights to Bergamo, offering convenient travel options. Beyond the shores and waves of Saimaa, South Karelia is home to numerous hidden gems beyond the city centres of Lappeenranta and Imatra.
Whether you begin your journey in the south or the north of South Karelia, the scenery will not disappoint. From Luumäki to Savitaipale, Taipalsaari, Ruokolahti, Rautjärvi, and Parikkala, the route stretches only about 200 kilometres, yet the landscapes are breathtaking.
Lake Saimaa extends nearly everywhere with its waterways, and the Vuoksi River, flowing from Saimaa to Lake Ladoga, is like the cherry on top. The lake and its surroundings offer activities for every season: cycling, hiking, skiing, snowshoeing, skating, kayaking, paddleboarding, and boating. Cruises are another fantastic way to explore this stunning lake environment.
Following Saimaa’s year as the European Region of Gastronomy in 2024, the Lappeenranta and Imatra region has gained deep respect for high-quality local food. Come experience South Karelia’s relaxed atmosphere, stunning nature destinations, and delightful culinary treats. Enjoy the gorgeous lake views and fascinating cultural attractions, all enhanced by the warmth of Karelian hospitality and locally sourced cuisine.

This fortress chain, which follows the border between Finland and Russia, stretches from the Gulf of Finland to Salla, cutting through the country over a distance of 1,200 kilometers. The construction project was massive – the Salpa Line includes 760 reinforced concrete bunkers, 225 kilometers of anti-tank obstacles, and 350 kilometers of battle trenches. It is the largest construction project in Finnish history, leaving a significant mark on the country’s independence and culture.
In Lappeenranta, you can explore the Salpa Line in Rutola and Voisalmi, where the fortifications are freely accessible to the public. The area features informative signs that explain the history of the fortifications, and you can visit the Rutola personnel shelters with a knowledgeable guide. Rutola was strategically important as it protected a route that foreign armies could have used to advance into Finland’s interior and to the Mikkeli headquarters.
Worth visiting are the restored bunker areas of the Salpa Line at the Salpa Station in Luumäki, Lemi, Ruokolahti, and Ylämaa.

SAIMAA SAUNA TOUR
The warmth of the sauna and the freshness of the lake water
The Secret of Happiness: Sauna
Finns have been ranked the happiest people in the world multiple times. It’s often suggested that one reason for this happiness is the sauna: in the sauna, both mind and body relax, stress fades away, and all the world’s troubles are washed off.
The Saimaa region offers a wide variety of sauna experiences. In addition to traditional lakeside saunas, you can also try more unique options. For instance, in Rautjärvi, you’ll find a classic smoke sauna that provides a unique and authentic Finnish sauna experience. In Imatra, you can enjoy a completely different kind of sauna experience aboard the over 100-year-old sauna boat, m/s Emma, a former tugboat. Meanwhile, at the Lappeenranta Harbour, you can relax in the sauna on the Princess Armaada while admiring beautiful views and the bustling harbour.
The best saunas are, of course, those by the shore or on an island, where it’s easy to cool off in the fresh lake water. But then someone had the idea that a sauna should be moved from the shore onto the lake itself. This combined two of the world’s most wonderful things – the Finnish sauna and the Finnish lake nature. Thus, the sauna raft and sauna cruises were born.
Sauna Cruises on Lake Saimaa
Saimaa offers the perfect setting for relaxing sauna cruises. The sauna boat m/s Emma departs from Imatra’s passenger harbour, cruising on the clear waters of Lake Saimaa. The cruise ship m/s Charlotte combines a traditional sauna experience with the breathtaking natural beauty of Saimaa in a truly unique way. Open Shores Saimaa’s vessel Polaris 1, a former Finnish Army ship, embodies the company’s philosophy of enabling unique nature experiences while respecting the environment.
Whether you’re a sauna enthusiast or simply looking to unwind amidst beautiful lake scenery, Saimaa is the place where you can experience the magical power of the sauna and the grandeur of Lake Saimaa all at once.

COTTAGES
Now that’s a proper birch whisk!
In South Karelia, the term *vasta* is commonly used, but *vihta* works just as well. It’s not about the word but what you do with the birch whisk.
“First, you go to the sauna, and then you eat the whisk,” goes an old saying. But which is it—*vasta* or *vihta*?
The terms *vasta* and *vihta* are often cited as examples of the differences between eastern and western dialects in Finland. The word *vasta* is more frequently used east of the Porvoo-Oulu axis, including here in South Karelia, while *vihta* is more commonly heard in Western Finland.
The origin of *vasta* is believed to come from the Swedish word *kvast* (broom). Another possibility is its roots in the Old Russian word *hvost* or the verb *hvostat,* which referred to the use of a birch whisk in bathing.
*Vihta*, on the other hand, has its roots in western dialects and has found its way into Finnish literary language. In Estonian, the word is *viht*, so it may have been borrowed from there—or vice versa. The word *vihta* even appears in Mikael Agricola’s telling of the Fall of Man, where Adam and Eve covered themselves with a *vihta* made of fig leaves.
Some suggest that *vihta* might also come from the word *vihma*, which means light rain.
The two are also said to differ in shape. A *vasta* is about 75 cm long and round, while a *vihta* is 50–55 cm long and flatter.
But in the end, none of this really matters. Whether you bring a *vasta* or a *vihta* to the sauna, the ”steam whisk” elevates the experience to the next level. As you gently swat yourself— or your sauna buddy—with a bundle of birch branches, blood circulation improves, and the sauna fills with an intoxicating birch scent. That’s what truly matters.

DELICACIES
Toss and pinch
South Karelian bread is soft and loafy. Bread was baked weekly and eaten fresh. The dough container was not washed; it was scraped clean and the dough left behind served as leaven for the next baking session.
Everyday bread was mostly rye bread. Rieska bread was also baked using barley, oat, rye or buckwheat flour or potatoes. Rieska bread from Joutseno has become one of the traditional delicacies of South Karelia. The Joutseno rieska bread is made from barley flour. An essential part of making the rieska bread is tossing the dough in a flat, wooden vessel. The dish is lined with flour, and dough is processed into single portions. The dough is tossed around in a special way with quick wrist movements to give the bread its characteristic round shape.
Pies play a big role in South Karelia’s culinary culture. Pies, both open and closed, were usually made in rye dough.
Pies were baked on Saturdays and were holiday and feast food. Closed pies (kukko in Finnish) were typical carryalong lunches. Typical pie fillings included with root vegetables, groats or fish. Rice is a newer addition. The rice pies with pinched crust started to be called Karelian pies after the Second World War when evacuees introduced them to other Finns.
Today, Karelian pies are manufactured and sold all over Finland. There are several pie bakeries in the South Karelia region. Karelian pie was granted EU Traditional Speciality Guaranteed (TSG) protection in 2003. Wheat-crust pies were baked for special occasions, for example to celebrate newborn babies (rotinat in Finnish) or marriages (these were called “groom’s pies”). The newborn baby celebration pie was closed and filled with rice, raisins and almonds, and had to be the size of the newborn.
In addition to bread, the daily diet included various cereal dishes, the most typical of which were porridges and dishes prepared by sweetening and fermenting. Leaven could be used for fermentation. The most common fermented foods were oat custard and sour rye pudding. The widely known Finnish specialty, malt pudding mämmi, was not part of the typical diet in South Karelia.

Root vegetable flatbread
• 2 dl root vegetable purée
• ½ tsp salt
• 1 egg
• 1 dl wheat flour
• 1 ¼ dl barley flour
• Fresh herbs
• Alexandra (or another local brand) crushed garlic to taste
Combine the purée, salt and egg and the Alexandra garlic. Mix in the flour and herbs. With floury hands, tap into small cakes, perforate.
Bake at 225°C for approx. 7 min until brown dots appear on the surface
Joutseno-style rieska bread á la Terttu
Ahonen (3–4 breads)
The everyday bread in South Karelia is most often rye bread, but rieska is also commonly baked. Joutseno-style rieska has become one of South Karelia’s traditional delicacies, made from barley flour.
• ½ l milk
• ½ l water
• approx. 30 g yeast
• approx. 2 tsp salt
• 6–7 dl peeled barley grain flour
• approx. 8 dl wheat flour
Heat the liquid to hand temperature, add the yeast. Add barley flour to produce a loose, porridge-like dough. Place the dish in a warm place to rest, “buzz”, for approximately 30–45 minutes. Add salt and knead adding wheat flour.
Leave the dough to proof in a warm place for approx. 45 min. Toss (höpsytys) the dough to form rieska breads in a flourlined vessel. Leave to rise on a cloth-covered plate for another 10 minutes. Move onto an oven tray, perforate with a fork. Bake for approximately 20-25 minutes at 250°C.
The rieska bread is done when you hear a thumping sound when tapping on its base. Put the breads bottom up on a soft cloth for a moment so that the surface won’t come off. Turn them over and cover with a baking cloth to soften the surface. Enjoy fresh with butter.
But what is höpsytys? An essential part of making rieska is höpsytys, for which a shallow wooden höpsytys bowl is needed. The bowl is well floured, and a portion of dough for one bread is placed in it at a time. The dough is höpsytetty, meaning it is tossed, spun, and shaped in the bowl with quick wrist movements, giving the bread its characteristic round shape.
