NHS Direct scrapped cont “When NHS 111 is rolled out nationally, it will replace the NHS Direct 0845 4647 telephone number,” the department said yesterday. People can dial 111 to get health advice and information about out-of-hours GPs, walk-in centres, emergency dentists and 24-hour chemists. Andy Burnham, the shadow health secretary and Labour leadership contender,

reached out to Liberal Democrats today to call for a public debate over the coalition's NHS reforms. "Changes are being forced on the NHS with no consultation, no piloting and no evidence," he wrote in a letter to Lib Dem MPs. "I do not believe that the people who voted for you at the election voted for such a radical break-up plan."

Recycling Revolution Taking Off In Sheffield

The Liberal Democrat Group on Sheffield City Council have revealed new figures which show that the new recycling service introduced by the Council is collecting double the amount of waste than the old service. Lib Dems have revealed that findings from areas already using the new service show double the recycling waste has been collected compared to the previous service. On average households are recycling 14kg of waste every four weeks, an increase on the 7kg average under the old service. The new service has also seen local residents placing less rubbish in the black bin and up to an estimated 20% more local people using kerbside recycling services. The news will come as a blow to opposition councillors on Sheffield City Council who

have described the new service as a “waste of money”. Cllr Paul Scriven, Liberal Democrat Leader of Sheffield City Council, said: "It’s great to see that local people who have the new service have doubled their recycling whilst reducing the amount of waste they put in the black bin. It’s also particularly pleasing to see that up to 20% more local people are using the new service compared to the old one. “Unlike those local Labour councillors who have branded the new service as a ‘waste of money’, Liberal Democrats believe that protecting our environment and increasing recycling. A massive well done must go to those Sheffielders who are making the new service a real success.” The new service sees fortnightly collections of paper, card, glass bottles and jars, plastic bottles

and cans collected from the kerbside for the first time ever in Sheffield . The old service only included a monthly collection for paper and card. The new recycling service started in the north of the City in April this year. It was then rolled out to the areas such as Fulwood, Broomhill and Shirecliffe in phase two during June. It is due to roll out to phase three areas, which include Totley, Gleadless Valley and Shiregreen, from September. The whole City will be covered by the end of the year. Paul added “Phase three of the service is due to start rolling out in September so that even more people can take advantage of more opportunities to recycle. In the meantime we will continue to listen to feedback to see how we can improve the service for local people.”
