Fund To Keep Sheffield Working Attracts Millions Sheffield City Council has attracted over £2 million to Sheffield’s economy thanks to its Keep Sheffield Working Fund. Just 18 months after the fund was formally established, the Council has reported a number of successes. Overall the £800,000 of Council investment has yielded a further £2,110,000 funding through partners and private sector match. It is anticipated that this figure could rise to £2,300,000 by December 2015. The Council is now looking to allocate a further £200,000 to con-

tinue the work of the scheme - increasing job creation in the area, and growth to the local economy. Already the Council has seen real success - in particular raising people’s aspirations and improving their chances of taking up training and job opportunities. The fund is on target to deliver 86 jobs over the course of the projects life. Over 90 businesses have been supported so far through Keep Sheffield Working fund and this figure will reach 130 by the end of 2014.
Dispersal blitz on street gangs Police in Sheffield are hoping to unveil a new weapon in the war on anti-social behaviour when they apply for a dispersal order for Abbeydale Road. Officers are applying to Sheffield Council for the measure which would give them the power to break up groups of trouble-making yobs who have been making residents’ lives a misery for the last 18 months. Inspector Ian Stubbs from South Yorkshire Police said groups of young Asian men had been throwing missiles and abusing residents. “For the last 18 months we’ve had significant amounts of anti-social behaviour from Mount
Pleasant Park right the way down to Carter Knowle Road,” he said. “All last summer we had young men throwing water bombs and stones at cars, pedestrians and property, and being verbally abusive when challenged. “It’s persistent anti-social behaviour and we
have been working closely with young people in the area.” The trouble culminated last year on Bonfire Night when fireworks were thrown at vehicles driving down Abbeydale Road. If granted, the measure will be in place for six months from May half term until after Bonfire Night. It means officers could break up groups of troublemakers and, if they returned to the area, they could be arrested and prosecuted. Troublemakers under 16 who are out after 9pm could be escorted home - but Insp Stubbs stressed it was not a curfew order.
Traffic fears over Sheffield wedding venue plan An Asian wedding venue and shisha bar could be created at a former truck yard in an industrial estate in Sheffield. Plans to change the use of and extend TRC Truck Rental on Dannemore Drive, Darnall – so it can be used for weekend ceremonies attracting up to 250 guests, as well as a café and restaurant during the week – have been submitted to Sheffield Council. However, nearby business owners fear the plans will bring too many extra vehicles into an area already congested with lorries and other vehicles during events at the nearby Motorpoint Arena. Eight objections, also concerning parking, access and smoke ,have been made to the planning application on the council’s website. Firm AMP, which is behind the application,
would relocate to Sheffield from Halifax, West Yorkshire, if it is agreed. Gary Grayson, a director at G9 Design architects, agent for the scheme, said the business would create 60 jobs, a £500,000 construction and put ‘Sheffield on the map’ as it was the first of its kind. Alcohol would not be sold. The location was chosen because of its transport links, car parking and bus routes. If we had moved to the labour club in the middle of Darnall as one objector suggested we would be right next
door to housing, which is the worst possible area for a wedding venue. Having it on an industrial estate out of hours at 5pm and weekends is ideal.”

Warsi On Governments Anti Extremism Policy Baroness Sayeeda Warsi last month spoke about the government’s anti-extremism policy, targeted profiling of Muslims at airports and leadership within the community. The Faith Minister was in Blackburn to discuss the Government's approach to integration and what it is doing to help tackle anti-Muslim hatred. Whilst some may have suggested this was some sort of charm offensive by the government, Warsi was unusually blunt and did not shy away from tackling some of the most pressing concerns. Members of the audience asked some testing questions about how the Government itself was indirectly helping to demonise Muslims. Something she was all too aware of in the opening exchanges, “Some people say to me I like what you say but I don’t like how you dress.” She was keen to stress that the
event was non-political and spoke only for several minutes before opening up the floor to questions. The discussion quickly turned to irresponsible comments made her own party member, Boris Johnson when he suggested Muslim children who risk being radicalised by their parents should be taken into care as victims of child abuse. The Baroness said, “Political par-
ties are made up of a range of people. You cannot control every single message that is coming of their mouths. There are people in my party who do not agree with what I say.” She spoke of her battles with her own party members and that things may not be quite as black as white as many people believe when it came to issues such extremism and British Foreign Policy.

Replacing red meat portions in your diet with vegetables may be a good recipe for your heart as scientists have now discovered a strong association between heme iron, found only in meat, and potentially deadly coronary heart disease. There are two forms of dietary iron: heme and non-heme. The study found no association between non-heme iron, which is found in plants and other non-meat sources, and coronary heart disease. Heme iron consumption increased the risk for coronary heart disease by 57 percent, the study warned. Heme iron is absorbed at a much greater rate in comparison to non-heme iron
(37 percent vs. five percent). Once absorbed, it may contribute as a catalyst in the oxidation of LDLs (Low-density lipoprotein or bad cholesterol), causing tissue-damaging inflammation, which is a potential risk factor for
coronary heart disease. The body can better control absorption of iron from vegetable sources, including iron supplements, but not so with iron from meat sources, showed the findings of the research.

SHEFFIELD COUNCILLOR CHANGES ELECTION WARD The leader of Sheffield’s Liberal Democrat party is standing for election – in a different ward to the one he has represented for a decade. Coun Shaffaq Mohammed was elected to Broomhill in 2004, but when Sheffield goes to the ballot box on May 22 he will be hoping to be voted in to nearby Crookes instead. A distributed election leaflet says the choice in Crookes and Crosspool is between either ‘Shaffaq Mohammed and the Lib Dems, or Labour’. Coun Mohammed, who has been party leader for three years, confirmed he was to leave Broomhill. He said: “The local party approached me to ask if I would be interested in standing in Crookes due to the amount of work we have been doing cross border and we have quite a young enthusiastic student in Broomhill. “I have been there ten years and worked hard, and I will still be campaigning for Broomhill library. “I am looking forward to it.” Student Harry Matthews is now standing for the party in Broomhill. Iron in red meat ‘red flag’ for heart?
Sheffield City Council has started work on site to expand Sheaf Valley Park, the land that sits behind Sheffield Train Station, creating an extensive green setting for over 1,000 new homes. The first phase of Sheaf Valley Park saw the creation of South Street Open Space – the new park and amphitheatre between the railway station and Park Hill. It also included landscaping around Park Hill flats and the first steps in planting a new arboretum. This scheme is fully funded by the Local Growth Fund, an initiative by Sheffield City Council that channels government funds from the New Homes Bonus, and is targeted at stimulating the housing market in areas where it has slowed down. The improvements will focus on two key links; the Clay Wood Green Link and the Park Hill Green Link. The Park Hill link will provide a new cycle and pedestrian path running from the tram stop at the back of the train
station up to the main entrance to Park Hill flats on Shrewsbury Road. The Clay Wood Green Link will create a continuous open space with a path for pedestrians and cyclists, running from Fitzwalter Road to Shrewsbury Road, through Clay Wood via the Cholera Monument. The rest of the Clay Woods flats site has been allocated for new housing, to be constructed by the new Sheffield Housing company. The Park Hill Green Link will include street lighting along its
length, enabling it to be used at all times, as well as seating and litter bins at intervals along the route. The areas either side of the path will be landscaped, with meadow planting and new trees. All of the works will be in keeping with the landscaping around the amphitheatre, and with the plans for the arboretum which has already started as part of the first phase of the project. It is anticipated that the works will be completed by Autumn 2014.
Hats off to Sheffield Children’s University Graduates Sheffield children and young people have shown they are a class act by completing one million hours of learning activities out of school. More than 23,000 children and young people, aged four to 19
from across the city, have taken up the opportunity to carry on learning in their own time by taking part in the Sheffield Children’s University – one of the largest established Children’s Universities in the country. Sheffield Children’s University is part of a national initiative encouraging and celebrating Sheffield children and young people who take part in a wide range of inspiring learning opportunities outside school hours at specific schools and other registered activity providers. For every hour of sport, dance, arts and other activities they take part in through Sheffield
Children’s University, they earn one credit. Gaining enough credits leads to being presented with award certificates and badges (bronze for 30 hours, silver for 65 and gold for 100) at special ceremonies. One hundred schools and 100 other activity providers such as museums, martial arts groups, Forest Schools, Scouts and Brownies along with thousands of parents and carers offer Sheffield Children’s University activities have supported the achievement of one million Children’s University hours. Research shows that children who take part in Sheffield Children’s University activities perform better at school than children who do not take part. Sheffield Children’s University participants also exceed their expected results.

New Sharia-Compliant University Loans For Students
A new model for Sharia law-compliant student loans has been unveiled by Universities and Science Minister David Willetts. The proposed system will enable people whose religious beliefs forbid them from taking out loans that accrue interest to take advantage of student loans. Speaking at a Universities UK Conference on universities and growth, David Willetts launched a consultation on the proposed model asking for views on whether it is an acceptable alternative to the conventional system. The model will be available to anyone who adopts similar financial principles. Anyone taking the loans will not be at any advantage or disadvantage – they will repay the same amount as
other borrowers. David Willetts said: “The Government is committed to ensuring that anyone with the ability and desire can go to university. “Sharia-compliant student loans will also give universities access to a wider pool of talent and help the UK get the higher level skills we need to secure long-term economic growth.” The intention to develop Sharia law-compliant student loans was announced by the Prime Minister last year. The Government is seeking feedback from current and prospective students, community representatives and higher education providers. The consultation opened April 3rd and will run for 12 weeks.
Device Speeds Up Treatment At Sheffield Hopsital Patients at a Sheffield hospital are to benefit from more advanced treatments thanks to a new £500,000 machine. Sheffield Children’s Hospital has received a donation from Yorkshire Cancer Research to purchase a genesequencing machine – which can map a patient’s complete genetic code in less than a fortnight. The state-of-the-art machine allows
scientists to detect tiny changes in cells and spot specific signs of cancer. Previously finding the correct gene was like looking for a needle in a haystack. This machine will be able to scan for small panels, like analysing a word on a page of text, to scanning books’ worth of genes. The gene scanner is the most advanced available. The machine allows to dramatically
cut the time taken to sequence an individual’s entire genome, from two years to just two weeks. This will enable the hospital to discover the molecular cause of many diseases, which in time will translate to clinical uses. The machine – an Illumina Hi-Seq 2500 – follows a previous donation from the Children’s Hospital Charity, which first introduced ‘next generation’ gene sequencing to Sheffield.
UK providing £200m to Pakistan for enterprise
Don Valley £17m Super School Plan A £17 million super school and community hub with 1,200 places for youngsters aged two to 16 is set to be built on the site of the former Don Valley Stadium. Coun Julie Dore, Sheffield Council leader, has given the green light for the project which will see a combined primary and secondary school open on the site by September 2015, subject to planning permission and consultation. The council says the new academy school will be a ‘cornerstone’ for regeneration and will meet high demand for new pupil places in the surrounding area. Its ‘state-of-the-art’ facilities would be married with a 1,222-place early years, primary and secondary school campus, with community facilities – and could even house a university technical college. The new academy school will
cost £16.7m, funded by a £13.4m central government grant, with the remaining £3.3m from the council’s capital schools budget. It will be sponsored by Oasis Community Learning. Once constructed, the site will be leased to the academy trust for 125 years. However, campaigners who had
been fighting to save the Don Valley Stadium as a sports facility expressed ‘disappointment’ over the way the stadium’s closure was handled. Consultation over the scheme will take place in the next few months. The council said a planning application is expected to be submitted in the next few weeks.
Global Poverty Figures Grossly Underestimated Calling the $1.25 (£74) per day poverty line used by the World Bank “too low” and “artificial”, researchers have now estimated that global poverty could be a third higher than currently reported. The World Bank is reporting a 'rosy' picture because the poverty line is set too low due to its narrow definition, said the study. "If the World Bank had, in fact, used a poverty line grounded in basic needs, rather than its present artificial one which only looks at one monetary measure, the total number of poor people in the world would increase substantially, perhaps by as much as 30 percent,” explained Christopher Deeming from University of Bristol in Britain. With over one billion people in the world living on less than $1.25 per day, the World Bank
aims to end 'extreme poverty' by 2030. The World Bank figures are widely used by the international community and play a significant role in international strategies to reduce poverty. For the study, researchers looked at those living on the Pacific island state of Vanuatu taking into account not just their finances but also shelter, sanitisation, water, information, nutrition, health and education to build up a more comprehensive picture of poverty, deprivation and inequality. The study found that five percent of all children in Vanuatu live in poverty, as defined by the international 'dollar a day' measure. But a much greater proportion (17 percent) live in poverty defined by the national food and basic needs poverty line; and absolute poverty, where people
are deprived of two or more basic human needs, affects 16 per cent of children, said the study. “Our findings suggest that the current international poverty line of a dollar a day seriously underestimates global poverty levels,” Deeming noted. In the context of Vanuatu, our triangulated results suggest under-estimation of poverty by at least a third in the population aged 17 years or under, he said in the study appeared in Journal of Sociology. The findings come amidst considerable controversy surrounding the international 'dollar a day' measure used to monitor progress against the United Nation's Millennium Development Goals and the future direction of the post-2015 development agenda.
The United Kingdom’s Department for International Development (DFID) will provide up to 200 million pounds for enterprise and asset growth initiative in Pakistan. The new initiative is aimed at providing financing facilities to small and medium enterprises. The DFID has committed to providing £76m as seed money which will be increased to 200m pounds in due course of time. The initiative is expected to create 400,000 jobs.

English Pupils Outshine French, German And U.S Peers In Problem Solving English students have been beaten by their Asian counterparts in a key international test to measure skills vital to the job market - but they have outperformed a number of western rivals. England came 11th out of 44 industrialised nations, edged out of the top ten by Singapore, Korea, Japan, Hong Kong and Shanghai. But the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) said the 15-year-old English students tested did "significantly better" in problem solving compared to pupils in many other countries. "Today's 15-year-olds with poor problem solving skills will become tomorrow's adults strug-

Clearly the message isn’t getting through to some businesses. According to the FSA, local authorities will now be expected to start checking food samples in takeaways from May 2014 onwards. A meat product is considered adulterated if it contains more than 5 per cent of another meat. If contaminated or mislabelled foods are continued to be found, takeaway owners could face a £5,000 fine. But with increasing uncertainty of processed foods in supermarkets and now meat sold in takeaways, consumer trust is beginning to fall at the wayside. Can the general public be completely sure what they buy is authentic? With higher levels of quality control now being enforced, it seems some food manufacturers will have to find other means of producing cheap and easy processed food.
Bazaar to regenerate Rawson Market A new Asian Bazaar is to open in Bradford Council's Rawson Market building. The Council has leased the site, behind the Oastler Centre, which has been empty since 2003, to Select Five who ran The Bazaar between 2009 and 2012 on Cemetery Road. This closed when the site was used to build a new Asda store. The new Bazaar will sell items including fabric, jewellery, Henna and a few food stalls. It is expected to open in June after some construction work to prepare the building, including installing a

mezzanine floor. Select Five already run Bazaars in Leeds and Rotherham. When they had a site on Cemetery Road, the stalls attracted thousands of visitors each week, not just from Bradford, but all over the country. Bradford Council had earmarked Rawson Market for redevelopment, but has not yet found a suitable use for the site. So it has agreed a five-year lease with Select Five while the future of the site is considered. Hassan Ali, Director of The Bazaar, said: "We promised our customers that we would not give
up on Bradford and now we have been able to fulfil that promise. I am so grateful to Bradford Council for helping us to find a suitable venue." The opening of The Bazaar will be marked with a celebration event which will include live music, dance, children's activities, giveaways and prizes. There is a multi-storey and other car parks near Rawson Market. It is expected to open in June after some construction work to prepare the building, including installing a mezzanine floor.

New mortgage rules and you
A mortgage is usually the biggest debt that people face during their lives. Now the rules governing who can secure a home loan are tightening. The new system, which came into force fully on 26 April, ensures that lenders conduct a full affordability check on mortgage applicants. This will have practical implications for the amount people can borrow and the length of time that an application might take. The aim is to prevent any return of the pre-crisis mortgage lending that many described as "reckless". In some well-documented cases, potential buyers were able to borrow the full price of a home, and a loan on top, then initially just pay back the interest. But, when property prices fell, many found themselves in negative equity. Many who lost their jobs or had hours reduced also found they had overextended themselves when borrowing for a mortgage and struggled to make repayments. The City regulator, the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), is introducing new regulations to ensure the most extreme cases are not repeated. That sounds sensible. So what is the counterargument? There are concerns about the implementation. A stricter interview could mean lenders ask more delving questions about an applicant's lifestyle and the whole process could take longer. That could extend the amount of time it takes to move home. Some people could find that they might have been able to get a mortgage previously, but now discover that the lender is only prepared to offer a smaller amount, or may reject the application completely. This will not only affect first-time buyers, but also those looking to remortgage. One reason for this is that a lender has to "stress test" a customer's ability to repay if interest rates were to rise.

Postgraduate Students From India And Pakistan Has Halved
The number of international students coming to England for higher education has "reduced significantly" for the first time in nearly three decades. The University and College Union warned that international students are choosing to go to a countries "that make an effort to welcome them". Growth fell between 2010-2013 - the first time in 29 years. The number of postgraduates from India and Pakistan halved in that period despite their numbers growing in other countries. Overall the number of full-time postgraduate students from
overseas dropped by 1% (1,000 students), compared to doubledigit growth in previous years. It seems tough domestic rhetoric on immigration and changes to student visas for damaging the UK's image abroad, especially at a time when other countries were doing more to attract international students. In 2012-2013 non-UK students still made up the vast majority of places (74%) on full-time masters programmes, while 26% were UK students. However, the study also found that almost as many Chinese students and English ones
are studying full time masters courses as a result of growth in Chinese entrants, coupled with a decline in traditional UK postgraduate markets like India, Pakistan and Iran. International students make a huge contribution to academic and cultural life on campuses and in our cities. They also make a valuable contribution to our economy. There are also nearly a quarter fewer undergraduates coming over from the EU in 2012-2013, possibly as a result of increased tuition fees.

Spanish children may soon be required to help out with housework, under a draft law that has been approved by parliament. The measure, which would be part of a wider child protection law, says that children under the age of 18 have an obligation to participate in all areas of family life. That includes "co-responsibility in caring for the home and performing household tasks regardless of age and gender". The rules come under a section
of the law called "the rights and duties of children". Along with doing chores, children would also have to be respectful to their parents and teachers, and have a positive attitude towards learning. But the bill doesn't say anything about penalties for children who refuse to go along. Other elements of the bill would see the establishment of a list of people who are banned from working with children, and it would be-
come a crime for people who work with children to fail to report possible abuses against them. Married Spanish men can also face legal sanctions for refusing to do housework - an update in 2005 to the marriage contract used for the country's civil ceremonies added a clause requiring men to share in household duties, and the care of children and elderly relatives.
UKIP surge ahead Something we never thought would be taken seriously, but a YouGov survey shows that Nigel Farage’s UKIP is surging ahead of the Conservatives and Labour in the forthcoming elections to the European Parliament. The poll for The Sunday Times puts UKIP in the lead for the first time, with the Conservatives trailing a distant third. The UKIP bagged 31% of votes, three points ahead of Labour, with the Tories languishing on a lacklustre 19 points. While Cameron has dismissed UKIP as “fruitcakes, loonies and closet racists”, the poll suggests the party has now broken through as a significant political force with a sizeable chunk of the electorate: 57% of all voters regard them as a protest party, 71% of UKIP’s own supporters regard them as a serious party. Javid Sajid Becomes First Muslim Secretary Of State Sajid Javid spoke of his immense privilege at succeeding Maria Miller as Culture Secretary, becoming the first Muslim Secretary of State. The MP for Bromsgrove is one of the Tories fastest-rising stars. He is the first of the 2010 parliamentary intake of MPs to achieve to be promoted to the cabinet and was appointed a Treasury minister only last year. A self-made millionaire and former City banker, he is now responsible for policy on broadcasting, sport, media, tourism, telecoms, equalities and the arts. The Margaret Thatcher devotee
said he “didn’t expect to have this kind of opportunity to serve the country at this level so soon, but I take it as a huge privilege.” Although pleased with his promotion the 44 year-old conceded it was “not in the best of circumstances to get a new job like this” given his predecessor’s resignation. He is one of a small but growing number of Tory MPs from ethnic minorities. Along with Rehman Chishti, Javid is the first British Pakistani MP to represent the Tories. Speaking last year Javid said his childhood and experience of life in one of the poorest parts of Bristol gives him a unique insight private
school-dominated Tory party. “Because of my background and the challenges I have had and the job I have had before, I have worked with and had friends from every group of society,” he said. “’I don’t think that’s true of all politicians, and that hopefully helps me empathise with and connect with people facing problems at any point on the social ladder, whether they’re a bus driver or an investment banker. I understand the issues and concerns they’re facing.” Javid’s father, Abdul Ghani, a bus driver, came to the UK from Pakistan in 1961, he settled in Rochdale. Sajid, one of five boys,
was brought up in Bristol and became the first member of his family to go to university studying Economics and Politics at Exeter University. Javid tells of how his father was a Labour supporter until the “winter of discontent” of 1978/9, later becoming a supporter of Thatcher. He said: “This is the root of my conservative beliefs. My mother and father had nothing and, like many people in their adopted country, worked their way up. “All they had to rely on was their drive and determination, a willingness to work hard, and the confidence to take risks in the hope of greater rewards. “There were, of course, ups and downs. But whenever my parents were knocked down, in business or anything else, they picked themselves up and started again. The abiding lesson was clear to me: don’t doubt yourself and don’t stop trying.” Similarly, inspired by what he saw as a turnaround in the country’s fortunes under the Conservatives, Javid joined the party in 1988. After entering the City, he became, at 24, the youngest VicePresident of the Chase Manhattan Bank.
He says he was later headhunted by Deutsche Bank in London to help build its business in developing countries and that he left in 2009 to “give something back through politics”. Javid sacrificed a vast amount financially to become an MP. He became an MP on just £65,000 a year after running Deutsche Bank’s trading operations in Asia, where he is reported by Bloomberg to have earned around £3 million a year. His remarkable ascend to the top started in when Bromsgrove MP Julie Kirkbride stood down amid controversy over her own expenses and he was selected as Tory candidate. He won with an 11,308 majority, an increase on the previous majority of 10,080 at the 2005 general election. Within six months he was a parliamentary assistant to Skills Minister, John Hayes, moving in October 2012 to doing the same job for Chancellor George Osborne. Javid became Economic Secretary to the Treasury in September 2012. In October last year he was promoted to Financial Secretary to the Treasury.
In January 2012, The Times newspaper included Javid in its list of the “Top 100 Global People to Watch in 2012”. The Times predicted that, “His background in investment banking and experience working on currency devaluations, mean that Javid’s star could be the brightest of a potentially stellar 2010 Tory intake.”

Council Tax Collection Helps Services
Rotherham Borough Council collected a much-needed additional £6 million in council tax and nondomestic rates in the last financial year - a welcome boost in the battle to provide vital front-line services. In 2013/14 an additional £5.2million was collected in Council Tax as well as an additional £2 million of non-domestic business rates. The 97.1% collection rate for Council Tax resulted in £93.9 million being collected. This

compares with £88.7 million in 2012/13. A collection rate of 98.2% for Non-Domestic Business Rates resulted in £73.5 million being collected compared with £71.5 million the previous year. This additional income £2 million is shared with the Government. The additional collections mean that Rotherham has a total of £6 million to spend on frontline services at a time when it is having to cut its budget. Coun. Jahangir Akhtar, Deputy Leader of Rotherham Borough Council, praised the Rotherham taxpayers. He said: "The Rotherham public do demand our thanks and praise. Despite the Government’s many changes to the benefits system and the rising cost of living being faced by so many, Rotherham people have come up trumps, with the majority paying their bills on time. It just shows that even at a time of Government cuts, Rotherham is a proud
town with proud people, who will do the right thing in spite of their own political views. "Rotherham has consistently been one of the top performing authorities in terms of its collection rates so it comes as no surprise that we appear to have done so well once again. He said the radical measures were needed to help fund the NHS which is struggling to meet the needs of an ageing population and more people suffering from long-term conditions. A report, co-written by Lord Warner, estimates a monthly £10 charge for using the NHS alongside other measures could generate £6bn a year. Diabetes Research: Good News For Caffeine Addicts?
People who boosted their coffee intake by "moderate to large" doses in a US-based study had a lower risk for adult-onset diabetes than those with stable consumption. An analysis of studies that tracked the diet and lifestyles of more than 120,000 health sector workers, showed that those who increased their daily caffeine dose by about 1.5 cups a day over a four-year period had an 11-percent lower chance in the subsequent four years of developing type 2 diabetes, the team found. This was in comparison to those whose intake remained constant. Those who had moderate to large decreases in intake (about two cups a day) had an 18 percent higher risk. Changes in coffee consumption habit appear to affect diabetes risk in a relatively short amount of time. Those with the highest coffee consumption, three cups or
more per day, had the lowest risk of type 2 diabetes -- 37 percent lower than those who consumed a cup or less per day, backing other studies that linked coffee to lower diabetes risk. The outcome may reflect a "true change in risk", but may also be explained by people cutting out coffee after being diagnosed with conditions like high blood pressure or elevated cholesterol associated with risk for type 2 diabetes, said the study authors. However, this merely evaluates the potential short-term benefits and provides no evidence that long-term coffee intake lowered diabetes risk. The research measured changes in consumption rather than absolute intake. The researchers had found that neither changes in consumption of tea, nor of decaffeinated coffee, was associated with risk of type 2 diabetes -- a high blood sugar disease often linked to obesity.
EU Bans Indian Mangoes The 28-member European Union has temporarily banned the import of Alphonso mangoes, the king of fruits, and four vegetables from India from May 1. It comes after 207 consignments of fruits and vegetables from India imported into the EU in 2013 were found to be contaminated by pests such as fruit flies and other quarantine pests. The temporary ban, proposed by the European Commission, includes mangoes, eggplant, the taro plant, bitter gourd and snake gourd. Though the prohibited commodities represent less than 5 percent of the total fresh fruits and vegetables imported into the EU from India, the potential introduction of new pests could pose a threat to EU agriculture and production, the committee noted. UK's Defra (the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) that is backing the ban said it was necessary due to pests which could threaten the country's 321 million pound salad crop industry of tomato and cucumber. I would hate to see such xenophobic parties elected – just look at the UKIP position against the building of mosques, for example. UKIP spokes person also said that Quran needs updating and all Muslim sign a declaration declaring they have nothing to do with terrorism, to me this is deeply insulting behaviour towards a particular community who makes a great contribution to our society. So I would urge everyone to turn out to vote in the European elections to stop these fascists getting a voice.

World Malaria Day New figures from Public Health England (PHE) have been published for World Malaria Day (25 April), which show an overall increase of 9% in imported malaria infections reported in the UK in 2013 (1,501) compared with 2012 (1,378). Malaria can be a life threatening disease, which is caused by parasites that are transmitted to people through the bites of infected mosquitoes. 79% of malaria cases in 2013 (compared with 73% in 2012) were caused by the more severe Plasmodium falciparum. This high proportion of falciparum malaria reflects the fact that most malaria imported to the UK is acquired in Africa. After a rise in recent years the proportion due to vivax malaria has continued to fall back, with 179 cases reported in 2013, compared to 271 in 2012 and 416 in 2011. The highest proportion of cases, as in previous years, is in travellers who are non UK-born who have visited family in their country of origin. The proportion of cases who have not taken appropriate antimalarials remains high. This implies that health messages about the importance of antimalarial prophylaxis are still not reaching groups who are at particular risk of acquiring malaria, predominantly those who are visiting family in their country of origin and particularly those of Black African ethnicity. It’s important to stress that any partial protection people may have gained from being brought up in a country where malaria is common is quickly lost when living in the UK. World Malaria Day provides a timely
reminder to all travellers going to a country where malaria is present to seek pre-travel advice about the appropriate measures to take to protect themselves, including preventive medicines. If you have any symptoms (usually flu-like or a fever), either while you are away or for up to a year after you return home, you must seek urgent medical help; malaria may cause severe complications and can be fatal. Travellers to countries where malaria is present should seek advice from their general practice, a specialist travel clinic or pharmacy about malaria prevention at least 6 to 8 weeks before they travel, but even if travelling at short notice it is still possible to get protected. Travellers are also reminded to avoid mosquito bites by using bed nets, cover-up clothing and insect repellents,
particularly for children. Information on insect bite avoidance and malaria prevention for specific countries is available on the NaTHNaC website. Malaria, an almost completely preventable but potentially fatal disease, remains an important issue for UK travellers. There is continuing evidence that those of African or Asian ethnicity who are non-UK born and going to visit family in their country of origin are at increased risk of malaria. PHE recommends that those providing advice should engage with these population groups wherever possible, including using potential opportunities to talk about future travel plans outside a specific travel health consultation, such as during new patient checks or childhood immunisation appointments.

John Lewis has announced a £1.3 million investment in its Sheffield department store, which will see the refurbishment of the ground floor, including a newlook beauty hall. The plans will see the beauty hall extended and refitted with some of the latest concept fixtures and new brands will be added to the assortment. As part of the refurbishment, haberdashery will move to the second floor, toys will be relocated to the third floor and gifts and gift food will move down to the ground floor. Work on the project is due to start in August this year and the project will be completed in October. John Lewis Sheffield will remain open throughout the works and activity will be carefully managed to minimise any impact on customers.

Six city primaries have even been unable to find places for youngsters living in their catchment areas – Dobcroft Infant and Dore, Oughtibridge, Greystones, Hucklow and Netherthorpe primaries. Other children have been turned away from schools where their brothers or sisters have places, giving parents major transport headaches. A council spokeswoman said the percentage of children getting one of their top three primary places had only fallen slightly to 95.8 per cent, despite the increasing numbers. “Those pupils who
were not allocated a place at one of their preferences have been allocated an alternative school. This will be their catchment school if they have not applied for it and there are still places available, or the nearest school with places available.” In secondary schools, 97 per cent were allocated one of their top three choices, unchanged from the previous year. Appeals hearings are already under way and will continue until July. Meanwhile work to expand the number of primary places is still continuing, with expansion plans prepared for schools in population hot spots including Greystones, Darnall, Tinsley, Crosspool, Firth Park and Wybourn.

Pakistan Journalist Hamid Mir Issues Defiant Statement The Pakistani journalist shot on 19th April has issued his first statement, once again blaming the country's intelligence agency for the attack. Hamid Mir, a popular and sometimes controversial anchor for the country's leading news channel Geo TV, was shot and wounded in Karachi. Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) dismissed the accusation as baseless and misleading. The defence department has urged the media regulator to suspend Geo TV. Hamid Mir's statement was read out late on 25th April by his brother, Amir Mir, who previously went on Geo TV and directly accused the ISI of ordering the attack. Although the news channel later appeared to distance itself from the accusations, this latest statement was given primetime prominence and will intensify the stand-off between the news channel and the military. "I had been facing threats from both state and non-state ac-
tors, but some developments in the recent past convinced me to inform my colleagues about the elements who could most likely try to kill me," Hamid Mir's statement reads. He goes on to describe an occasion where intelligence officials apparently visited his home to say his name was on a hit list. "I told them [colleagues] that in the current situation I felt the most immediate threat from the ISI." The statement claims the ISI was angry because of his coverage of the issue of Balochistan and his criticism of the spy agency. "State agencies often use the name of non-state actors to threaten journalists so as to prevent them from speaking or writing the truth," the statement said. Media standards The ISI angrily denounced the accusations when they were originally put forward by Mr Mir's brother, and the defence ministry says Geo brought the agency into disrepute.
Pakistan's media regulator is considering its request that Geo TV be suspended. The defence department complaint accuses Geo of conducting "a vicious campaign, libellous and scandalous in nature... against a state institution tasked to work for the defence, sovereignty and integrity of Pakistan". Geo was also criticised by rival TV channels and ex-military analysts for its coverage in the immediate aftermath of the attack. Geo has not responded formally to the complaint, saying it only reported the Mir family's version of events and that rival channels have "wrongly attributed the allegations against ISI to Geo". While the shooting was a violent reminder of the dangers Pakistani journalists face on a daily basis, the aftermath also highlighted problems with the standards of the country's media, correspondents say. Hamid Mir, the first journalist to interview Osama bin Laden after 9/11, is one of Pakistan's best-known presenters and survived an attack by the Taliban in 2012. In this latest incident he was hit six times in the abdomen and legs after his car was fired on by men on motorbikes as he was leaving Karachi airport. It remains unclear who fired the shots and no group has said it carried out the attack. Pakistan is one of the word's most dangerous countries for journalists.
PM’s Gas Connection Cut Over Unpaid Bills The infamous utility supplies in Pakistan prove difficult for the general public there. But now we hear that gas supplies to the Pakistani prime minister's residence have been cut off over thousands of pounds of unpaid bills. The residence and office of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is said to be 4.7m rupees ($48,000, £28,000) in arrears on its gas bills. But the premier's
office is apparently just one of several official buildings to be disconnected in the capital city, Islamabad. Parliament House, Parliament Lodges and the Federal Shariat Court are some of the other government buildings currently without gas. All of the non-payers had been sent several notices but never responded, a spokesman for gas supplier Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited.
Ironically, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had been pushing for a zero-tolerance policy towards gas payment defaulters only days earlier. At a high-level meeting at the end of last monthy on electricity and gas theft, he called the practice unacceptable and said measures on a "war footing" should be taken against perpetrators, a statement from prime minister's office says.

They work all their lives simply paying back the interest. “We help by paying off the initial debt and then settle the interest owed with the creditor. “Many people’s lives have been ruined by these huge interest payments. Akhuwat derives its name from ‘mwakhaat’ or brotherhood. It has sought to base its movement on the principles of ‘Qarz-e-Hassn’ found in the Islamic tradition which entails helping someone in need with interest free loans, a practice favoured over charity. Over the past ten years it has supported over 500,000 people and presently have 215,000 active clients. A total of 7.5 billion
and the people are quite unique. The loan is essentially given out on trust and paid back through trust. There are no overheads in terms of local offices because mosques, churches and temples are used as places where the initial meetings take place. The charity was established in 2001 when the idea of Akhuwat was presented before a group of friends at the Lahore Gym-

HS2 - THE DEBATE CONTINUES Mohammed Mahroof BSc (Hons) MRICS Consultant Mark Jenkinson & Son It has been some time since the HS2 high speed rail link between London and the North was announced. The euphoria has dwindled and reality has set in. Many people and businesses along the route are anxious to know how it will affect them. Some see it as an opportunity, others as a loss of a way of life they have become used to. Whichever way you look at it, this is a huge investment in the communication structure of the country. The cost of the link between London, the Midlands and the North of England is likely to cost in the region of £42.6bn, with £7.5bn for the trains. The proposal has a vote through the House of Commons on 28th April 2014. There are likely to be some MPs who will vote against the Government. There are a number of reasons given for this, for example, the environmental damage it will cause, as clearly it will be going through open countryside, and also the cost of the whole project which, being based on today's prices, could in theory rise over the length of the project. A report entitled “Failure to Transform: High Speed Rail and the Regeneration Myth” eludes to little evidence for the economic benefits of the project. The think-tank talked about the faster rail link between London and Doncaster, which was introduced in the late 1970s, and the electrification of the route completed in 1991. Despite this, the town is ranked 42nd worst out of 315 English boroughs. So on the face of it, the faster rail link has
not benefited Doncaster. There is also talk that regeneration will happen but this may be restricted to specific areas having a new HS2 station. Clearly any large project will have criticism but is it a reason for not progressing it? The supporters of the scheme point to the success of HS1 and how that has benefited many areas and communities. Whether the line will help solve the North/South divide is a debate which will follow for many years to come. On the face of it, it is a exciting infrastructure project, improving links between us, other cities and London. Economically it has the potential to create not just construction jobs through the build phase, but longer term investment into this country and the regions. If you look at other developed countries such as Japan, France and many others, such infrastructure projects have been around for many years and the benefits are there for all to see. In some of the world's developing nations major transport projects are the bedrock not only of connectivity of regions but economic growth. As with any major infrastructure project there are people who are less enthusiastic,and with good reason as their property may be affected wholly or in part. community and the way of life you have chosen. It is clear such projects do have a major effect on people's lives. I have first hand experience of this as my family were affected by a major hydro electric dam project, with my father coming to this country in the fifties. A Community Centre in Sheffield has over the weekend made history by hosting an event which was attended by over 620 EU Migrants. The Community Open Day, hosted by the Pakistan Muslim Centre, ( PMC ) Sheffield was a direct result of ‘The Community Cohesion, Building Initiative’. This was an initiative which witnessed the centre voluntarily opening its building up to Darnall and its immediate vicinity. This involved putting on recreational activities for children, adults and families alike. Indeed a bulk of the live performers at the community open day had been trained under the auspices of the PMC. The event consisted of live performances from members of the Roma Slovakian, Bulgarian, Czech, Hungarian and Polish Communities. With Speeches from the Lord Mayor of Sheffield Vickie Priestley, Clive Betts (MP) , Police and Crime Commissioner , Shaun Wright amongst other dignitaries. Attendees were given opportunities to benefit from information which was readily available courtesy of the various information stalls. Some of the more notable stalls providers
included DACT, SASS, Sheffield University Life Long Learning, South Yorkshire Police and Fire service, Amey , Viola, Royal Bank of Scotland. etc , etc. Bouncy castle, face painting and availability of various Eastern European Cuisines provided the gathering a fun fare and carnival like environment. The Pakistan Muslim Centre has been engaging with the local EU migrant Community, particularly the local Roma Slovakian Community ever since tension flared in firvale. The Chairman Mohammed Ali said “ I observed a television programme portraying a negative image about the Eastern European Community residing the Eastwood area. While a cause for concern, these slow heart rates were not associated with any very serious heart rhythm disturbances in the study. The researchers don’t want to alarm patients, but what they’ve found is potentially important. The researchers recommend patients could consider checking their blood glucose late at night ‘every now and then’, or speaking to their doctor about changing their insulin regime.

But not all WiFi is as secure as we might think it is. Europol’s Cybercrime Division warns that attacks are rising on public WiFi and are a major security risk. In the UK, key cities like London, Manchester and Birmingham are increasing public WiFi access, whilst restaurants, cafes and bars are also keen provide free WiFi to attract customers. For most smartphone users public WiFi is always seen as a great way of saving data usage included in their phone tariffs but if you are going to use public WiFi for personal transactions, sensitive data and banking, this may not be the best method.
