An open letter to the residents of Nether Edge ward

Labour Party candidate for Nether Edge ward Mohammad Maroof and Cllr Nikki Bond with Nighat Khan at the launch of Thalassemia South Yorkshire. Maroof said "We are grateful to Nighat Khan and her team who have taken brave steps to address an issue which needs urgent attention and awareness. I am thankful to Nether Edge labour councillors who allocated funding from ward pot and took great interest in the issue."

I am truly delighted that I have been selected to be your Labour Party candidate for the Nether Edge ward at the local elections on 7th May. I thank you for the warm welcome that you have shown me on your doorstep. If I have not already spoken with you I look forward to seeing you soon.

n letter to the residents of Nether Edge ward

I have lived with my family in Nether Edge since 1999 where I also used to have my previous business offering legal advice and support. For four years I was a councillor for Central ward fighting against this Tory / Lib Dem government through very difficult times. We have seen the damage that they have done to us with their bedroom tax and vicious cuts to our services. Their cruel immigration controls have hit our families by bringing in an £18,600 minimum threshold for spouses and then taking away the appeal

The national minimum wage is to increase by 20p an hour to £6.70, the biggest real-terms rise in seven years, the government has announced. More than 1.4 million low paid workers will benefit from the 3% hike, while rates for younger workers and apprentices will also go up - all from October. The hourly rate for 18 to 20-year-olds will go up from £5.13 to £5.30 (3%) and by 8p to £3.87 for 16 and 17-year-olds (2%). “We know there is a persistent problem with low pay in some sectors of the economy, and areas of the UK. The minimum wage system is necessary and right, but is a minimum by definition” Business Secretary Vince Cable. Prime Minister David Cameron said: “At the heart of our long-term economic plan for Britain is a simple idea - that those who put in, should get out, that hard work is really rewarded, that the benefits of recovery are truly national. That’s what today’s announcement is all about, saying

Big five service providers agree to £100 mobile phone theft cap. A cap on mobile phone bills run up by thieves after handsets are stolen will bring relief to millions of consumers. Five service providers - EE, O2, Three, Virgin Media and Vodafone - say the £100 cap will be activated providing the phone is reported lost or stolen within 24 hours of it going missing. Consumer groups welcomed the move which they said would protect victims of crime from the added frustration of receiving huge bills. Citizens Advice chief executive Gillian Guy said: “Victims of phone crime should not be paying excessive bills run up by thieves.”

A cap on bills from stolen mobile phones will come as much-needed relief to consumers targeted by phone fraudsters. Citizens Advice has been calling for a cap to be put in place after helping consumers landed with bills as high as £23,000. The five firms have drawn up a code of conduct which will oblige them to provide: Clear pricing information and alerts when consumers reach data bundle limits; Information on how to avoid roaming charges; A barring function so users can protect themselves against unauthorised or inadvertent calls to premium rate services and in-app purchases. It comes as the number of smartphone thefts has plummeted thanks to socalled kill switches. Apple, Samsung and Google have all implemented techniques for owners to effectively render a phone useless if it is stolen. As a result, smartphone thefts have fallen by half in London. Customers are advised to protect their phone as they would their wallet and make full use of the security features, including SIM lock.

Households are facing a postcode lottery when it comes to getting the fastest broadband speeds, new research shows. A survey of the UK’s very quickest average connections also shows the north of England enjoying twice as many speedy streets as the south. Superfast broadband is now available to more than three quarters of the UK, but nearly a third don’t realise they can get it. The data, sourced from a million speed tests

done by broadband users, showed wide variations even within the same areas. Generally, a third (34%) of the UK struggles with sub-5Mbps speeds, while just under a quarter (23%) make do with less than 3Mbps. The government says its roll-out of superfast broadband is one of the fastest in the world, and it is on track to reach 95% of the UK by 2017.
