Property & Construction | Insultech Insulation

Insultech – making homes healthy For too many years New Zealand’s predominantly European-style timber-framed houses let in draughts and allowed heat to escape. By the 1940s the ceilings and walls of over 50 percent of new dwellings contained mould and researchers concluded that the solution was to increase both thermal insulation and ventilation. Until the early 1960s however, all house insulation material had to be imported and so in practice this was available only to wealthy or knowledgeable builders and owners, and it was not until 1978 that the level of thermal insulation required in new houses was specified by law. Nowadays the benefits of home insulation are far more appreciated; heating and cooling account for 50 – 70 percent of the energy consumed in the average home. Inadequate insulation and air leakage are leading causes of energy waste. “Last year the Government announced new rules requiring landlords to ensure their rental properties, many of which are older houses, are insulated by July 2019,” says Stephen Nicolson of Insultech Insulation. “Some 180,000 privately tenanted rental properties are likely to require retrofitting of insulation and that is our specialty.”

Since then the company has grown at a rapid pace and is now able to provide not only Auckland with the very best of insulation products, but other parts of the country as well. “I bought the company in 2014 after having worked across all aspects of the business for several years. My goal has been to expand our service into the Waikato region, Taranaki, the Bay of Plenty and Dunedin.

• Professional certified installation of insulation

Insultech Insulation’s top product is CosyWall: a multi-purpose product designed to provide effective thermal and acoustical insulation for existing water-tight external timber-framed wall cavities, fibre cement, plywood or sealed masonry veneer claddings.

• Recommendation regarding existing insulation • Removal service for undesirable old insulation or damp insulation • Existing wall insulation

It is a durable dry-blown insulation system that is retrofitted into existing walls, eliminating the costly and time-consuming process of removing claddings to then install insulation.

• Roof insulation • Floor insulation.

To insulate ceilings Insultech supply Jet Steam Max, a very high quality wool insulation system. It is the only blown insulation used to insulate New Zealand roof attics that has no added formaldehyde and is non-combustible, clean and durable. It is superior to batting or blanket, as it covers the full ceiling including over and under timber joists, and it is especially convenient for hard to access parts of roof spaces. The third signature product in Insultech’s range is Warmafloor. This is a polyester fibre blanket manufactured specifically for placing between floor joists against the underside of the floor. The rolls of material are uniquely sized to facilitate handling in confined sub-floor spaces and can be torn readily to suit joist length. “Another service we provide is removal of existing insulation from accessible roof attics or sub-floor cavities, because the insulation may have rotted, become infested with insects or may simply need to be replaced during renovations.”

“We specialise in residential insulation – roof insulation, floor insulation and wall insulation for new houses and for remediating existing homes. It is telling that the types of products sourced particularly in the United States by the founders of the company are ones that we use today with slight modifications. They definitely were visionaries.”
