Mountain tranquillity
This architectural masterpiece is an absolute haven, nestled nicely into its surroundings as it sits aside Lake Hayes and faces Coronet Peak.
It’s quite simply a meticulously crafted family home demonstrating exceptional attention to detail and quality. From the initial site and land stabilisation to the final touches, the builder’s expertise is evident in every phase of construction.
The house is a beautifully balanced blend of thoughtful floor planning and practical design, tailored to meet the needs of a modern family. The careful consideration of both form and function ensures that every room serves a purpose while maintaining aesthetic harmony.
It exemplifies high-level craftsmanship with its impeccable detailing and precision. The builder personally hand-drew all construction details, which were then translated into CAD format by an architectural technician.
This seamless integration of traditional hand-drawing with modern technology reflects a commitment to quality and innovation.
The result is a home that not only showcases expert construction but also demonstrates the builder’s personal touch and dedication to excellence.
A particular highlight of the home is the award-winning loft bathroom, which won a Plumbing World Bathroom Excellence Award. The design of the bathroom integrates an open floor plan, allowing for privacy while offering panoramic views of the surrounding mountain range through clerestory windows.
The careful selection of tiles, bespoke joinery, and highend fixtures, along with subtle lighting, creates a luxurious and functional space. This bathroom exemplifies Form
Construction’s exceptional design sensibility and meticulous attention to detail.
This stunning house won multiple awards at the Southern Registered Master Builders House of the Year competition, including the Southern Pink Batts Craftsmanship Award, Builder’s
Own Home Category, and a prestigious Gold Award, marking it as a standout in both design and execution.
Overall, this home is a testament to the builder’s expertise and passion for quality craftsmanship, making it a deserving winner in multiple award categories.
Four tips from Pattersons architect Ben Fraser
By Ben O’Connell
Patterson Associates
are New Zealand’s most internationally recognised architectural practice, known for innovative public spaces, such as Ravenscar House Museum and Taranaki’s Len Lye Centre, and also dream homes for New Zealanders. Despite the ambition and scale of their projects, there’s plenty that everyday Kiwis can learn from the award-winning architecture studio.
Pattersons design approach is rooted in creating buildings that belong in their location. Ben Fraser’s approach is similar but not identical. Each architect contributes their unique perspective on Pattersons’ ethos: the people, the land. “Everything we do is about people,” he says.
Let the site guide you
Whether it’s a coastal bach with a beachy vernacular or an urban townhouse retreat ideal for getting away from daily life’s hustle, Ben encourages anyone building a home to let the environment inform their design choices. “When you go camping, you’re conscious of the elements. That consideration can also be channelled when planning homes,” he says. How the wind will affect an outdoor space once the house is built is one example.
Three actionable ways a site can offer guidance are orientating the home to capture views or provide shelter, using natural materials found locally, and
maintaining the tone and feel of the existing neighbourhood and environment. “Even in urban centres, we are so close to nature,” he continues. “This inherent connection is something New Zealanders cannot help but be informed by. Local materials are imperative to many of our designs.”
Design for people
After a long day at work, we want to unwind and relax. Ben
says our homes should reflect and support this. With this in mind, an approach for urbandesigned homes is to centre around a courtyard that allows for privacy, natural ventilation and light. The layout of the house should combine functionality and atmosphere, considering how each space serves a purpose while evoking a desired feeling.
When designing commercial buildings, Ben sees it as an opportunity to explore unique
“An interesting perspective we discuss in the studio is the home as a body with a soul. When designing, you want to work for the building to retain the original vision. Homes have their own identity. It’s a different conceptual approach and experience every time.”
ways to activate and articulate space as people move through them. “There are opportunities to humanise the experience as people move from public, semipublic to private spaces,” he explains.
Ben also advises Kiwis to inject their homes with an element of discovery, with opportunities as we transition from one space to the next to reveal framed
views or tranquil outdoor spaces to invite you to relax and decompress.
Maintain your vision
Everyone wants the chance to build their dream home, but as the build process begins, initial dreams can be diluted or lost entirely. Ben advises anyone building a home to stay true to their original vision, as it
comes to life. Ben is constantly designing, but he keeps the first intentions of a project in mind.
“An interesting perspective we discuss in the studio is the home as a body with a soul. When designing, you want to work for the building to retain the original vision,” he says. “Homes have their own identity. It’s a different conceptual approach and experience every time.”
Pattersons focuses on the site and the client, which is a great lesson for every Kiwi. “Clients come to the table with so many different variables,” Ben notes. “Everyone’s dream is different, and that is reflected in the designs. It’s about understanding how people want to live, catering to this, and then enhancing their lifestyle and exceeding expectations.”
Stay cohesive
Pattersons’ ethos is epitomised by refined, well-considered projects. Ben advises New Zealanders to curate a palette, by choosing finish, texture and colour to complement each other and stick to few materials in their builds, to reflect on the land, its tone, and the environment when doing so. “In our designs as a whole, we strive for a strongly cohesive design language.”
When I asked Ben to describe his dream home, he laughed. “I’m often asked this at parties and so on, but it’s so hard to answer. For me the philosophy of maximising views is critical; it depends on the site and the circumstances. I love to spend time hiking, so my focus is the outdoors. I imagine a beautiful coastal site, the views, the weather, the people. It’s all of those things, the memories to be made.”
Designing play with purpose
By Jamie Quinn
When it comes to designing a playroom, there’s more to consider than just making it look fun. A wellthought-out playroom can shape how children learn, explore, and develop.
That’s the philosophy behind Ako Playrooms, founded by Steven de Bruin, an educatorturned-playroom designer. With over a decade of experience in childhood education and a deep understanding of child development, Steven has made it his mission to help families create play spaces that are as enriching as they are exciting.
For Steven, the transition from teaching to designing playrooms was a natural evolution. “Ako Playrooms was born out of a very real, hands-on experience— parental leave!” he shares. “As an educator, I had spent years creating engaging, play-based learning environments in classrooms, but when it came to setting up a playroom for my daughter, Arlie, I realised just how much thought went into getting it right. I wanted a space that wasn’t just fun but also
supported her development, independence, and curiosity.
Seeing how well a balanced playroom worked at home, I knew other families could benefit from the same approach. That’s when the idea for Ako Playrooms took shape—helping parents create spaces that aren’t just beautiful, but purposeful and enriching for their children.”
Steven’s background in education is the foundation of his design philosophy. “Ako Playrooms’ design process is built on three key elements: educational, organisational, and aesthetic design. My background in education shapes this approach—every playroom is designed to support learning, independence, and creativity.”
“Play and environment are everything when it comes to a child’s learning and
development,” Steven explains. “Play is how kids make sense of the world—it builds problemsolving skills, creativity, and confidence. But the environment plays just as big a role. A well-designed space encourages deeper engagement, independence, and exploration.”
By creating spaces that support different types of play, we can ensure that a child’s playroom supports curiosity and learning. “When a playroom is set up with intention, it becomes a place where children thrive.”
For Steven, a well-designed playroom starts with functionality. “Functionality comes first—if a playroom isn’t organised and easy to use, it won’t support meaningful play. That’s why we focus on clear zones, appropriate storage solutions, and layouts that encourage independence.”
Creativity, he explains, is just as essential. “We embrace colour, playful elements, and opportunities for open-ended play to spark imagination.” And when it comes to inclusivity, Steven ensures every space is tailored to the needs of the child and their family. “We take the time to understand their needs, vision, and support network, ensuring the playroom truly reflects and supports them.
Every child should feel like their playroom is made just for them.”
Rather than focusing on strict developmental milestones, Steven takes a more flexible approach. “For younger children, this might mean spaces that encourage sensory exploration, movement, and early problemsolving. As kids grow, their play needs evolve—fine motor skills, imaginative play, and social interaction become more prominent. Older children benefit from areas that support creativity, independence, and learning through play.”
To keep playrooms relevant over time, Steven recommends designing spaces that can adapt. “Our play areas are intentionally created to be used in multiple ways, ensuring they remain engaging and supportive at every stage of development.”
Ako Playrooms follows a Categories of Play framework to support well-rounded development. “For gross motor development, we incorporate active play elements like climbing walls, monkey bars, and balance equipment— giving kids opportunities to
move, build strength, and develop coordination.”
Cognitive development is supported through openended materials like puzzles, art stations, and building blocks.
“For social development, cosy nooks, role-play areas, and open-ended setups invite collaboration, communication, and shared storytelling.”
“Colours, textures, and lighting are powerful tools in creating an engaging and stimulating play environment,” Steven says.
“Colour can set the mood—bold, vibrant hues energise a space, while softer tones create a calming atmosphere.”
Textures add depth, from soft rugs to tactile wall panels.
“Lighting shapes the play environment and impacts how children feel in the space. Natural light is ideal, but we also use warm, adjustable lighting to create a cosy atmosphere.”
One of the biggest challenges parents face is ensuring their playroom remains useful as their child grows. “We focus on layouts, furniture, and play elements that can be reimagined over time,” Steven explains. “Adjustable
“Functionality comes first—if a playroom isn’t organised and easy to use, it won’t support meaningful play. That’s why we focus on clear zones, appropriate storage solutions, and layouts that encourage independence.”
shelving, multi-use surfaces, and modular storage allow the space to change as a child grows.”
Ako Playrooms also caters to neurodiverse children, including those with ADHD and autism.
“For children with ADHD, we design with movement in mind—integrating active play elements like climbing structures or fidget-friendly stations. Clear organisation and visual cues help create structure.”
“For autistic children, sensory sensitivity plays a big role in design. We consider lighting, textures, and sound carefully, creating calming spaces with adaptable sensory elements. Some children may benefit from enclosed, calming areas for self-regulation.”
One of Steven’s most memorable projects involved a family who wanted a play space in their open-plan living area. “With four-metre-high ceilings, we designed a custom-built play loft—a perfect nook between
the kitchen and deck. This loft became a hub for imaginative and active play while also keeping toys neatly stored.”
“The best place to start is organisation,” Steven advises. “When a space is well-organised, children feel confident and independent. Clear zones and accessible storage make tidying up easy and intuitive.”
He also suggests embracing open-ended play. “Play is the foundation of learning. By setting up a playroom that encourages movement, storytelling, problem-solving, and hands-on creativity, parents can create a space that feels both fun and educational.”
A great playroom is a space that is aesthetically pleasing but also encourages curiosity, independence, and meaningful play. With thoughtful planning and the right approach, parents can feel confident in designing a playroom that truly works for their child, now and in the future.

Top shelf Curating the perfect home library
By Ben O’Connell
Reading is fundamental. Growing up surrounded by books has a proven positive influence on literacy and worldview in later life. The home library is a place to retreat and relax, learn and be inspired, and bond with loved ones. Why do these spaces matter, and how do they come together?
If you own many books, then you ought to have somewhere to enjoy and celebrate them. If you’re short for space, then maybe a wide hallway or inbetween space or a corner in a large room collecting cobwebs could be converted into a book nook. Creating one can be as easy as one chair in a cosy corner of your home, perhaps a rug, a beanbag, a throw, and some other soft furnishings, and, of course, your collection of books.
Elements such as a ladder, builtin shelves, or modular bookcases can help you maximise space and function without skimping on form. Floating shelves or wallmounted units can create a sleek, space-saving look that soon resembles interactive wallpaper.
Lighting is another key component. Natural light is ideal, but if your reading space is in a dimly lit corner, consider adding adjustable floor lamps, wall sconces, or even LED strip lighting integrated into the shelves. Warm, soft lighting helps to create a relaxing atmosphere that makes reading for hours a joy rather than a strain.
To make the space even more inviting, think about layering textures with cushions, blankets, and rugs to enhance comfort. Soft furnishings make for a comfy area that also helps
absorb sound. A well-placed side table or ottoman provides a handy surface for a cup of tea, a notebook, or even a reading companion’s book.
Integrating natural elements can also elevate the space. Small potted plants and trees will refresh the space and improve air quality. If your library is near a window, take advantage of the natural light and perhaps add a window seat with built-in storage underneath. Ignore this if you love that old-book smell, though.
In 2025, the reality is that reading isn’t necessarily done on paper. It makes sense to include a discreet charging station for e-readers and tablets in your design. Further, smart lighting with adjustable colour temperatures allows you to set the perfect reading mood, and wireless Bluetooth speakers can provide soft background music or play audiobooks.
Make your library unique
Still, a meaningful and welcoming home library goes beyond aesthetics. A book collection reflects your life journey, your fluctuating interests, countless experiences, moments in time. How a home library or reading space is designed can make the most of this sentiment.
Instead of organising your books by genre or colour, consider grouping them by their emotional impact on you, by when you acquired them, or when they mattered to you most. Interior design elements should also reflect you, not what you think a home library should be. Consider a space that more closely resembles a minimalist office or crowded bookstore if that speaks more to you. Make room for future books (and souvenirs and other tchotchkes) to allow your evolving library to grow with you, and don’t be afraid to personalise your books with notes about when and where you read them. How about including a lending shelf in your library’s design as well, encouraging visitors to dig into your collection?
Comfort and quality
Coastwood Furniture designs and manufactures New Zealand-made timber furniture with a range of solid wood bookcases, desks, and occasional chairs. They say that an elevated home library space blends comfort with quality.
Dedicating a zone of your home to reading with a comfortable chair, sturdy bookshelves that can fit books of all different sizes,
and a solid wood side table creates a functional yet inviting space, they say.
“Natural timber furniture adds warmth and durability and ensures the space remains timeless,” the Coastwood team says. “Good lighting, a wellthought-out layout, and soft textures make all the difference in creating an immersive reading experience.”

“Natural timber furniture adds warmth and durability and ensures the space remains timeless. Good lighting, a wellthought-out layout, and soft textures make all the difference in creating an immersive reading experience.”
“The space must be comfortable, and if intended for the purpose of reading, then quiet and distraction-free...not easy in most households,” he admits. “Shelving must be at accessible heights so children can take ownership of their choices, and at different heights to fit picture books and larger texts, of course!”
Learning together
home should have some way to access books. “Whether it’s a single shelf or an entire room, it is crucial for children especially to see reading as a normalised family activity.
“I was lucky enough to spend time with my grandfather, who was a reader, and we’d spend many summer afternoons in Woodend Beach in comfy chairs on his sunbaked porch, in silent reading bliss.
“To have access to books at any time of the day is so important, as access in schools or the community may vary.
Librarian Kim Slack leads the children’s and youth floor of Tūranga, Christchurch’s central library. “Reading is a powerful tool to improve academic outcomes and builds skills for lifelong learning,” she says. It also involves adults in their child’s learning.
“It’s an opportunity for parents to take time out and spend it together, and it takes you away from other demands, the stress of everyday life.
“What we model and support at home helps our whanau in a school environment,” she adds. The new English curriculum introduced reading for pleasure across all levels: Te Mātaiaho. Students from early childhood through to senior secondary are encouraged to engage with texts they choose for enjoyment regularly. Home libraries and reading corners help to facilitate and normalise this worthwhile curriculum change.
Whether you’re doing so for pleasure or out of interest, reading travels you to different destinations, Kim says. Creating a space for reading in your home is incorporating personal growth and imagination into your daily lifestyle, which everyone could use more of in our often-hectic modern world.

Mastering the man cave
By Jamie Quinn
Designing the perfect man cave is all about creating a space that fulfils your needs and feels like you. Whether you’re into sports, gaming, or movies or just want a quiet place to breathe, designing your ideal man cave requires some planning and creativity.
The first step in creating your man cave is choosing the right space. It could be a spare bedroom, a basement, a garage, or even a shed that you transform. The size of the space will influence what you can include, but no matter how big or small, the key is making it feel like your own. Once you’ve picked the spot, consider the layout. Think about what you want in the room and how you’ll arrange everything to maximise comfort and functionality.
Next, it’s time to define the theme or style. Some guys go for a sleek, modern look with leather seating and a minimalist design, while others prefer a rustic feel with dark wood features and vintage decor. Maybe you’re a die-hard sports fan and want memorabilia covering the walls, or perhaps you’re a movie buff and dream of a home theatre setup. Your man cave should reflect your personality, so don’t be afraid to get creative with the decor. Framed posters, neon signs, vintage finds, or

even a custom bar can all help personalise the space.
Your man cave can serve a variety of purposes depending on your interests. If gaming is your thing, a dedicated gaming station with a high-end gaming chair, a couple of monitors, and LED lighting can make the experience much more immersive. For a home theatre vibe, a large TV or projector with surround sound and cosy recliners will turn your space into a private cinema. If you’re into billiards, setting up a pool table with a few bar stools and a scoreboard can create the
perfect game room. A bar area with a mini-fridge, a selection of your favourite drinks, and a stylish bar counter can make it a great place to host friends.
Furniture is another major factor in the design. A comfortable seating area is essential, whether it’s a big plush sofa, recliners, or even some oversized bean bags. If you’re planning on hosting friends, make sure there’s enough room for everyone to sit comfortably. A coffee table or a bar cart keeps the space functional, giving you a place for drinks,
snacks, and whatever else you need to keep within reach.
Lighting plays a big role in setting the mood. Dim, warm lighting can create a cosy atmosphere, while LED strips or smart lighting can add a high-tech feel. Adjustable lighting is a great option, allowing you to brighten things up when needed and dim them for movie nights or relaxation.
Storage is something many people overlook when designing their man cave, but it’s essential to keep the space looking good and staying organised. Shelving
THE LEADING COMMERCIAL & RESIDENTIAL TILING COMPANY
units, cabinets, or even underseat storage can help keep clutter at bay while still allowing you to display your favourite collectables or books.
Finally, don’t forget the finishing touches. A good sound system for music, comfortable throw blankets for colder nights, and maybe even a personal touch like a framed jersey, vintage sign, or a custom-made piece of art can bring everything together. The key is making the space truly yours—a place where you can kick back, relax, and enjoy whatever makes you happy.

It doesn’t matter if you’re a natural-born socialite or not, installing a home bar is a great way to create a designated entertainment space, whether it’s for casual hangouts, parties, or simply enjoying a drink after a long day.
However, creating the perfect home bar involves more than just setting up a counter and stocking it with bottles. Several important factors should be considered to ensure your home bar is functional, stylish, and wellsuited to your needs.
Space and location
The first thing to consider is how much space you’ve got. Whether you’re installing a bar in your living area, basement, man cave, shed, garage, or anywhere else, the location will significantly affect the overall feel and flow of the space.
If space is limited, a compact bar cart or a small built-in bar is the best option. For larger
spaces, you can opt for a more elaborate setup, such as a full bar with seating. Make sure there’s enough room for people to move around comfortably, especially if you plan on having guests over regularly.
Design and style
The first thing to do is choose a style that suits you and the available space, whether it’s modern, rustic, vintage, or contemporary.
Consider the materials you want for countertops, cabinetry and shelving. Popular choices include wood for a classic look, marble or granite for a luxurious feel, and stainless steel for a sleek, modern bar. Pay attention to lighting and wall art, as they are vital in creating the look and feel you’re after.
Functionality and features
A wet bar, which includes a sink and small fridge, goes a long way to delivering authenticity, rather than just having a bench and some stools.
Consider the storage space you’ll need for bottles, glassware, mixers and bar tools. Cabinetry and open shelving can help you organize everything neatly while making it easy to access what you need. You may also want to include a wine-rack.
A few bar stools along the counter or a bar-height table are a must and if space allows, add a sofa for a relaxed vibe.
Plumbing and electrical considerations
Wet bars require access to plumbing for the sink and possibly a dishwasher, so you’ll need to factor in installation costs. You’ll of course need outlets for appliances like blenders, refrigerators, and lighting fixtures.
Budget
Setting a clear budget is essential. The cost can vary greatly depending on the size of the bar, the materials you choose, and the features you want to include. A simple bar cart or countertop setup will be significantly less expensive than a custom-built wet bar with premium materials and appliances.
Last drinks
Installing a home bar can inject new life into your home, and create a focal point for a vibrant social life. By considering factors such as space, design, functionality, plumbing, and budget, you can create a space that suits your needs and fits seamlessly into your home.

Fortunately, the equation for success is simple: consider the size of your room and the appropriate viewing distance to get the best TV for your space.
Determining the optimal viewing distance
To get the most immersive experience, the TV should occupy about 40% of your field of view. A simple rule of thumb for finding the ideal viewing distance is to multiply the TV’s size by 1.2.
Choosing the right sized TV for your space
• 32” – 49”
Ideal for bedrooms, kitchens, or small living rooms, these TVs are compact but offer excellent quality.
• 50” – 65”
A great choice for medium to large living rooms, these provide an immersive experience, especially for movie lovers or gamers.
• 70” – 75”
These larger TVs are perfect for medium and large living rooms, offering an enhanced viewing experience for movies, sports, and gaming.
• 75” or Larger
Perfect for large living rooms or home theatres, these massive screens offer an unparalleled cinematic experience.
Viewing distance guidelines
The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) recommends that the TV should occupy about 30° of your field of view. Your ideal viewing distance should be between 1.2 to 1.6 times the TV’s diagonal size. For example, with a 75-inch TV, the recommended viewing distance is between 230 cm (2.3 meters) and 300 cm (3 meters).
Choosing the right TV size is essential to get the optimal viewing experience. Fortunately, the equation for success is simple: consider the size of your room and the appropriate viewing distance to get the best TV for your space.
Whether you’re looking for a compact TV for a small bedroom or a massive screen for a home theatre, taking these factors into account will ensure you enjoy your entertainment to the fullest.
A guide to maximise your space Creating a multi-functional home office
Whether you are a remote worker, a freelancer, or someone who occasionally brings work home, having a well-designed office space that meets diverse needs can significantly enhance your efficiency and job satisfaction.
Understanding your space and needs
Assess the space: The first step in creating a versatile home office is to assess the available space you have. Find a quiet space with minimal distractions; it could be a spare room, a corner in your living room, or even an unused closet space. The key is to find a space that can be dedicated to work without interfering with the rest of your home life.
Define your needs: Consider the tasks you do daily. Do you need multiple monitors? Space for writing or drawing? Room
for storage? Understanding these needs will help you design a space that is functional and conducive to productivity.
Choosing the right furniture
Desks: Find a desk that fits your specific needs. It might be good to consider a sit-stand desk for flexibility or a corner desk to maximise space. The desk should have enough surface area for your computer, papers, and any other essentials you will use throughout the day.
Chairs: Ergonomics play an important role in any home office. Invest in a good-quality office chair with adjustable settings so you can work comfortably for long periods. Ergonomic chairs help prevent the strain and discomfort that can come from sitting in a lessthan-ideal chair.
Storage solutions: Versatility means having everything you
need within easy reach. Opt for storage like floating shelves, filing cabinets, or even a mobile cart that can be moved as needed. Portable storage options are great as they can be rearranged based on your current project or workflow.
Maximising technology
Internet connectivity: Ensure your office space has reliable high-speed internet, especially if video calls and working with others online are part of your daily routine. If your office is far from your main router, think about upgrading your router or adding a Wi-Fi extender.
Sufficient power sources: Set up your space so that you have enough power outlets to handle all your devices. Power boards with USB ports are especially handy for charging multiple gadgets like smartphones, tablets and headphones.
Tech tools: Invest in technology that enhances productivity.
This could be dual monitors for multitasking, a high-quality webcam for video conferencing, and noise-cancelling headphones to block out any noise around your home.
Light and ambience
Natural light: Whenever possible, set up your office in an area with plenty of natural light. Natural light is shown to boost mood and energy, which is key for productivity. If there isn’t much natural light available, make sure to have a combination of ambient and task lighting to keep your workspace bright and strain-free.
Personal touches: To make your home office feel inviting, personalise it with items that inspire you, like artwork, plants, or a photo of your family. These personal touches make the space more enjoyable to work in and help to separate work life from home life when you step into your office.
Flexibility for multi-use
Spare bedroom: With thoughtful design, your home office can also serve as a spare bedroom. A sofa bed can be a great addition, allowing the room to change into a guest room when needed. Include comfortable bedding and side tables, and ensure suitable lighting and privacy like curtains or blinds.
Reading room: Add a comfortable chair, a floor lamp, and a small bookshelf to your office space to create a cosy reading nook. This can be a perfect spot to take breaks or unwind after work hours, offering a peaceful retreat.
Craft or hobby room: If you have enough space, your home office can also be a place for hobbies. Include storage for craft supplies, display shelves for finished projects, and suitable lighting. This makes switching between work and leisure activities easy without needing extra space.
Wellness integration
Active workstations:
Incorporate elements that promote physical health, such as a desk cycle or a treadmill desk. These allow you to stay active while working, which is great for your physical health and cognitive function.
Relaxation zones: Designate an area within your office where you can meditate or perform stretches. This zone could have a small mat and calming decorations, like an essential oil diffuser, to help you stay calm and balanced throughout the day.
Maintaining organisation
Declutter regularly: Keep your workspace organised and clutterfree. Clear out unnecessary items regularly and keep only what you need for work. An uncluttered space helps reduce stress and improve focus.
Organisational systems: Create a system that works for you. Whether it’s filing paperwork, managing digital files, or organising office supplies, keeping everything in its place will save you time and trouble.
Security and privacy
Data security: Protect your important work information with suitable cybersecurity measures, including strong passwords, encrypted connections, and secure networks.
If you have enough space, your home office can also be a place for hobbies. Include storage for craft supplies, display shelves for finished projects, and suitable lighting.
Privacy measures: These are especially important in shared spaces. Consider privacy screens for your monitors and use headphones for sensitive calls. This protects your information and minimises disturbances to others in your home.
Creating a versatile home office involves more than just setting up a workspace; crafting a multifunctional area that adapts to various aspects of your life, enhancing productivity and relaxation. By integrating thoughtful design, appropriate technology, and flexible furniture options, your home office can become a sanctuary for work and leisure, making it a truly valuable and cherished part of your home. Whether drafting a report, hosting a webinar, relaxing with a book, or engaging in a hobby, this space can seamlessly transition between functions, providing an environment supporting all areas of your lifestyle.

Is a steel-framed home right for you? Ironclad investment
By Ben O’Connell
With over 30,000 homes built in New Zealand every year, it’s no wonder the industry battle between timber frames and steel frames is intense.
Members of the timber team say that steel homes have a larger carbon footprint, poor thermal performance, can be susceptible to corrosion and rust, transmit sound more readily within the home, and make your Internet connection spotty, among other reasons.
Supporters of steel frame homes list enhanced fire resistance, design flexibility, and resistance to pests, mould growth and decay as some of the material’s advantages.
Still, interest in light gauge steel frame (LGSF) homes is growing, accounting for 6% of the homes built in New Zealand. Most of our roofs are steel, so why not the frame, too?
Greg Jones is the deputy chair of NASH, the National Association of Steel Frames Housing. He refutes many of the common arguments against steel homes, some of which have fallen as the industry has developed.
One such example is thermal performance. Greg says this is resolved by mandating the level of installation used in a steelframed home.
“Thermal transfer is not solely a steel frame issue; timber is prone to this,” he says. “Take a look around next autumn and look for the shadows of the studs on the exterior walls of timber homes... that’s thermal transfer.”
Greg cites a current NASH project on moving light gauge steel frame homes into the next generation. “There are some exciting products that can improve efficiency and fit in with the machine manufacturing accuracy of LGSF,” he says.
Another concern about steel frames is that ‘tinny feeling’, but as an LBP carpentry, Greg says there’s nothing tinny about steel framed homes: they fully comply with the New Zealand Building Code, and once the house is lined, there’s no real way of knowing.
He notes that sound transfer needs to be considered no matter what material is used.
“Sound does travel through steel, but we aren’t building a railroad,” he remarks. “Using good design and materials that absorb, isolate or deflect sound is essential to creating a liveable environment.
And we cannot ignore money. NASH says that though LGSF can be more expensive than other materials at first, its longterm benefits prove more costeffective. “In general, we are on par to 10% cheaper than our timber counterparts,” Greg says, especially when you consider every component of a
timber frame, down to the last brace and purlin.
Also saving the client, steel frames are typically built quickly, meaning efficiency, schedule certainty, and pre-punched services, which save time and onsite mess. Builders aren’t as tired at the end of a day working with steel over timber frames.
Greg advises anyone considering a steel home to align with an architect and NASH fabricator. Finding industry experts is crucial. A full 3D model project render will be made so that you can manipulate and see how the rooms will look.
“We are experts in modular building, so plans and details are comprehensive without being incomprehensible,” he says. “Be aware of the hold timber has on our industry and what that means to the information you have been gathering while doing your due diligence.”

Don’t leaf it too late Get your
garden Autumn ready!
By Jamie Quinn
As the warm days of summer fade and the cooler autumn air rolls in, it’s time to shift gears in the garden. Autumn gardening is all about tidying up after summer, improving soil health, and planting cool-season crops that will thrive in the months ahead. With the right preparation, you can enjoy fresh vegetables well into winter while setting your garden up for success in spring.
One of the first steps for autumn gardening is cleaning up from summer. The end of summer growth can leave behind tired plants, weeds, and dry soil that needs revitalising. Removing spent crops, cutting back overgrown plants, and clearing away any diseased foliage helps
prevent pests and diseases from lingering over the cooler months. At the same time, replenishing the soil with compost, well-rotted manure, or a layer of mulch will improve its structure and nutrient levels, ensuring a strong foundation for the next round of planting.
Autumn is also the perfect time to plant vegetables that thrive in cooler temperatures. If you’re looking to keep your vegetable garden productive, consider planting brassicas like broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, and kale. These hardy crops can withstand cooler temperatures and often taste even better after a light frost.
New Zealand’s climate varies across the country, and autumn gardening success depends on understanding your local conditions. In warmer northern regions, gardeners often
experience a more gradual transition to cooler weather, which allows for a longer growing season. In these areas, it’s possible to plant crops well into autumn without the risk of early frosts. However, in cooler regions such as the South Island or higher-altitude areas, the onset of frost can be sudden, meaning gardeners need to plant sooner and take precautions to protect young plants.
Frost is one of the biggest challenges in autumn gardening, but there are simple ways around its effects. Using frost cloths, cloches, or even upturned buckets to cover young or sensitive plants overnight can help protect them from sudden temperature drops. Mulching around plants with straw, bark, or compost is another effective way to insulate the soil, helping to retain warmth and moisture as the weather cools.
Another important factor to consider is watering. Many gardeners make the mistake of reducing watering too soon, thinking that cooler weather means plants require less moisture. While it’s true that evaporation slows, plants still need consistent watering, particularly while they establish themselves. Early autumn often brings dry spells, so monitoring soil moisture and adjusting watering as needed is essential.
Autumn gardening can be tricky to navigate, but with a little planning, your garden can remain productive and full of fresh produce. By preparing the soil, choosing the right vegetables, and taking care of young plants as the season transitions, you’ll be rewarded with a thriving autumn garden that carries through into winter.
Spinach
A fast-growing leafy green, spinach is ideal for autumn planting as it prefers cooler temperatures. It can be grown in the ground or containers, with spacing of around 15 cm between plants. Keeping the soil moist and harvesting leaves frequently will
Kale
One of the hardiest greens, kale thrives in autumn and even improves in flavour after a light frost. It grows best in well-drained soil and needs consistent watering. Harvesting outer leaves regularly encourages new growth.
Cabbage is another excellent autumn crop, but it requires good airflow to prevent disease. It’s best to plant seedlings rather than seeds at this time of year to ensure they are established before winter. Regular watering is important, but avoid wetting the leaves too much to prevent fungal issues.
Vegetables to plant in autumn
Cauliflower
Leeks grow slowly but are a fantastic autumn crop, thriving in the cooler months. They require deep, welldrained soil with plenty of organic matter. When planting, bury them slightly deeper than usual and mound soil around the base as they grow to produce long, white stems. Keep them well-watered but avoid waterlogging the soil.
Broccoli
Autumn is the perfect time to plant a range of vegetables that thrive in cooler conditions. Here are some of the best choices and tips to ensure a successful harvest:
Like broccoli, cauliflower prefers cooler weather and benefits from a consistent supply of nutrients. To avoid yellowing heads, consider tying the outer leaves over the developing curds for natural blanching. Space plants at least 45 cm apart to give them room to grow.
Silverbeet (Swiss Chard)
An easy-to-grow, lowmaintenance vegetable, silverbeet is a great option for autumn planting. It tolerates a variety of conditions and will continue producing for months if harvested correctly. Pick the outer leaves first, allowing the plant to keep growing from the centre.
A hardy vegetable that can withstand cooler temperatures, broccoli planted in autumn will grow steadily and be ready for harvest in late winter or early spring. For best results, choose a sunny spot with welldraining soil and space plants about 40 cm apart. Adding a nitrogen-rich fertiliser will support leafy growth.

Moonlit movies
By Paige O’Brien
Imagine enjoying your favourite films under the stars, surrounded by the familiarity of your garden. Installing an outdoor cinema at home is a fantastic way to enhance your entertainment options and maximise your outdoor space. Whether for family movie nights, hosting friends, or relaxing after a long day, an outdoor cinema can be a magical addition to your home.
Choosing the right space
The first step in setting up an outdoor cinema is finding the perfect spot in your garden or backyard. Look for a level area with enough space for seating and a clear view of where the screen will be placed. Ideally, this area should be away from street lights and other light sources to ensure the best viewing experience.
Selecting the screen
When it comes to the screen, you have several options. A fixed screen can be mounted on a wall or a custom frame for a permanent setup. Alternatively, inflatable screens are available, which are perfect for occasional use, as they can be set up and
taken down easily. If you’re on a budget, a plain white wall or a firmly hung white sheet can also serve as an effective screen.
Getting the right projector
The choice of projector is critical for a good outdoor cinema experience. Look for a projector with high brightness (measured in lumens) to counteract ambient light. The projector should also support HD resolution to ensure sharp image quality. Ensure it has the appropriate inputs for whatever media player you use.
Sound system setup
Sound is as important as video quality when setting up your outdoor cinema. A good
pair of outdoor speakers can significantly enhance your viewing experience. For a truly immersive experience, consider a wireless or Bluetooth speaker system that can connect easily with your media player or projector.
Comfortable seating
Comfort is key to creating an enjoyable cinema experience. Opt for outdoor lounge chairs, bean bags, or even hammocks. Add plenty of cushions and blankets for cooler nights. If you’re hosting a larger group, consider tiered seating arrangements so everyone has a good view.
Media player and connectivity
You’ll need a media player that can play DVDs or Blu-Rays or stream directly from services like Netflix or Disney+. Many projectors include built-in streaming features, but you can also use a laptop, tablet,
or phone. Ensure your setup has access to Wi-Fi or a stable internet connection if streaming online content.
Lighting and ambience
Finally, set the mood with some moody lighting. String lights, lanterns, or even candles can add a magical touch to your outdoor cinema. Make sure the lighting isn’t too bright to avoid washing out the movie.
Weather
conditions
Always have a backup plan for bad weather. Whether it’s a portable gazebo to shield your equipment or a quick-setup indoor alternative, being prepared will ensure the show continues.
Installing an outdoor cinema is a great way to expand your home’s living space and enjoy the outdoors. With a little effort and creativity, you can bring the magic of the movies right into your own backyard.

Taxidermy in New Zealand Capturing nature’s beauty
By Paige O’Brien
Taxidermy is an age-old craft that combines both art and science to preserve, mount, and display the bodies of animals. This practice dates back centuries, with its roots steeped in history and tradition.
Whether it is for scientific study, education, or just personal enjoyment, taxidermy is a unique way to appreciate wildlife by capturing its beauty and essence.
President of the New Zealand Taxidermy Association, David Mowbray, says that the origins of taxidermy in New Zealand go as far back as when the early settlers came out.
“What they tried to do was set up a system via the acclimatisation society where they could basically create a haven for game animals and give it access to everyone.
Once the introduced deer and other animals bred up, they initially sold licenses to hunters.
As the population increased and could sustain normal hunting pressure, it was then open to the public. Many people took up this sport given the opportunity.
David says that, along with hunting, taxidermy follows, as people want to preserve animals and remember successful hunts.
“With taxidermy and hunting, we deal with emotions. Someone goes out on a hunt and shoots a big stag; they will get it mounted, but it is all about the hunt and its emotions and being able to remember that experience.”
But just because someone doesn’t hunt does not mean they can’t have taxidermy in their home. Taxidermy has grown in popularity and has been trending for years in New Zealand, as it is seen as a form of art as well as hunting trophies.
“People obviously buy it because they appreciate it
and they want to look at it; by all means, it’s a different form of art.
“People choose abstract versus a still, versus a scene or something like that. It’s just different art forms, and they appreciate it for what it is.”
Despite a large group appreciating the art of taxidermy, many don’t due to their ethics and concerns, as well as their association with hunting and misconceptions.
David says this is because some in the community don’t have a full understanding of what it entails.
“My philosophy has always been whatever you take, you utilise. So, we eat all the meat, so you try and utilise the whole animal, and if you don’t need them, don’t shoot them.
“There is a lot of conservation behind it as well; if it is a pest, well, then that is a different story; you may just go and kill it because you need to reduce the number to balance the environment and that sort of thing in the caring capacity.
“My philosophy has always been whatever you take, you utilise. So, we eat all the meat, so you try and utilise the whole animal, and if you don’t need them, don’t shoot them.”
“There is a segment in the community that’s just anti anyway, and you’re not going to change them; some of that is through ignorance as well. But, once you get into it and understand it, people get a different idea of what exactly it entails.”
Whether admired as art or kept as a memento, having taxidermy as part of interior design or art is a way to connect to the wild and the memories created within it.
Powerhouse performance
Greetings from the Powerhouse Movers team. We are a small familyowned business that takes great pride in the work we do.
From delivering and installing, to providing the friendliest and most helpful customer service and maintenance of a range of spa pools.
Since starting our small business on the 2nd of February 2021, we
have delivered swim spas, spas and jacuzzis to many satisfied customers for Spa World, throughout most of the South Island. Before this I was employed by Vortex Spas to provide the same services but throughout New Zealand either working solo or with a partner. All the skills and knowledge that I gained, gave me the confidence and belief to start my own business.
We have the best possible working relationship with Spa World. This reflects in our
customer service and positive feedback. Our relationship has a strong foundation of trust making my decision to relocate my family from Auckland to work in beautiful Otautahi Christchurch, when asked, an easy yes. I eventually started and built my business Powerhouse Movers Ltd with the support and guidance of Spa World. For a couple of years, we provided our services for all the South Island now our services are within and around Otautahi.
My family and I are of Pacific ethnicity and highly motivated to provide the best hospitality and care for our customers, as we would for our own family. We are respectfully considerate of our elderly customers and pay extra attention to their individual delivery and needs. I never second-guess our service;
top customer service is what we stake our business on. I believe this to be an important factor to our financial survival. Bye for now, talk soon.

Ensuring your home is quake safe
When the ground under your feet is literally a glorified faultline, then the next earthquake is a case of ‘when’ not ‘if’ – a situation Kiwis are acutely aware of.
EQC Toka Tū Ake encourages homeowners to make some simple checks on their homes, and to take actions that will help keep their whānau and properties safe.
EQC public education manager Hamish Armstrong says all earthquakes, no matter the size, serve to remind us that we live in a part of the world that is very seismically active.
In the wake of any quake, EQC encourages New Zealanders to use them as reminders to check up on their home and take steps to make it safer and stronger for the inevitable reality of larger quakes in the future.
The Commission says a great place to start is with some simple checks around the home to identify elements that could be modified to prevent damage to homes or injuries to people.
“A home that’s properly secured to its foundations will likely experience less damage during an earthquake,” Hamish says.
“If your home has a suspended timber floor, you may be able to go under your house to check foundations are in good condition and that correct fastenings and bracings are in place. It’s important that foundations are well connected to the house above as this will help minimise movement and damage in a larger earthquake.”
The EQC also recommends checking your chimney. Past earthquakes have shown how dangerous and damaging chimneys made from brick or unreinforced concrete masonry can be. When these extend above the roofline they can collapse
to the outside of the house or through
“No matter its age or type, if your chimney is already showing signs of wear and tear, or damage, it could need immediate attention. Look for cracks, loose or broken bricks, loose masonry or plaster, and leaning or twisting,” Hamish says.
Professionals are likely to be required to remove a brick or concrete masonry chimney and secure foundations, but there are also quick fixes we can all make to reduce the risk of damage and help keep you and your family safer.
“Look around your home for tall and heavy furniture and appliances such as bookcases, cabinets, tallboys, TVs and hot water cylinders and make sure they are securely fastened so they won’t topple over in a quake.
“Another simple action is to move big and heavy objects
from high storage locations to cupboards or shelves that are lower down. Having these items low means that they can’t fall onto you or a loved one during a quake, which could result in a serious injury,” Hamish explains.
“Finally, take a moment to check up on your insurance. Do you understand what would and wouldn’t be covered for should you suffer damage to your home or land from a natural hazard?
“In a country at high risk of natural hazards, we must do our best to prepare ourselves by understanding where insurance starts and finishes, and what we can do to fortify our homes to reduce the risks,” he says.

Getting inspired by architectural design
Choosing between hiring an architect or opting for a pre-prepared plan from a building company is crucial. While pre-designed plans are convenient and cost-effective, there are tangible benefits behind creating a customdesigned home.
Here are some reasons why using an architect can add up to a home of, and for, a lifetime.
1. Personalised design
One of the most significant advantages of hiring an architect is the level of personalisation they offer. Architects work closely with you to understand your specific needs, preferences, and lifestyle. Whether you need more storage space, a home office, or eco-friendly features, an architect tailors the design to suit your exact requirements. Pre-prepared plans, on the other hand, are often generic and may
not reflect your unique vision or accommodate your family’s specific needs.
2. Creative and innovative solutions
Architects are trained to think creatively and can bring innovative design solutions to the table. They don’t just focus on aesthetics; they also consider the functionality and flow of your space. Whether it’s maximising natural light, optimising room layouts, or incorporating features that improve daily life, architects have the expertise to enhance both the form and function of your home. With pre-designed plans, you are limited to what’s already been designed, which can restrict your ability to create a home that truly suits your lifestyle.
3. Site-specific design
Every plot of land is unique, with its own set of challenges and opportunities. An architect considers the specific
characteristics of your site—such as the terrain, topography, views, and climate—when designing your home. This ensures the design is not only beautiful but also practical, helping you make the most of your location. Preprepared plans often overlook these site-specific factors, potentially leading to poor utilisation of the land or issues during construction.
4. Long-term value and sustainability
A well-designed home can significantly impact its longterm value. Architects focus on creating homes that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also sustainable and energy-efficient. By incorporating green building practices, passive design strategies, and durable materials, architects can help lower longterm maintenance costs and reduce your environmental footprint. Pre-prepared plans might not always prioritise these factors, and you may end up
with a home that requires more upkeep and uses more energy in the future.
5. Navigating regulations and codes
Building codes, zoning laws, and other regulations can be complex and vary by location. Architects are skilled at navigating these legal requirements, ensuring that your design meets all necessary standards and avoids costly delays or fines. With a pre-prepared plan, it’s
easy to overlook specific local requirements, which could cause issues down the line.
6. Co-ordination and oversight
An architect doesn’t just design your home—they also coordinate the construction process, ensuring that the project stays true to the original vision. They can work with contractors, resolve any issues that arise during construction, and help keep the project on
schedule. This oversight ensures that the building process runs smoothly, whereas, with pre-prepared plans, you may not have the same level of guidance throughout the construction phase.
7.
Customisation for future needs
Architects also plan for the future, thinking about how your home might evolve as your family grows or as your needs change. They can design flexible
spaces that are easy to modify over time, ensuring your home remains functional for years to come. In contrast, predesigned plans may not be as adaptable to changing circumstances, potentially limiting the long-term comfort and live-ability of your home.
While pre-prepared plans from a building company may offer convenience and lower upfront costs, working with an architect provides a more customised, creative, and longlasting solution.
From personalised designs to site-specific considerations, architects help you create a home that not only reflects your personal style but also enhances your daily life and increases the long-term value of your property.
The expertise and oversight an architect brings to the table can make all the difference in ensuring your dream home becomes a reality.
