The four keys to selling value

Helping more young New Zealand families into their own home is a priority for National. That’s why we have a comprehensive housing plan to improve housing supply and affordability.

Top salespeople use four unique steps to create value-selling opportunities and quantify benefits and solutions.

When pondering what to offer a viewpoint on, I was drawn (back) to capacity modelling.

The key to improving affordability is to build more houses, and build them faster - and we’re focused on doing that.

We’re also supporting more first home buyers through our HomeStart scheme.

Anyone considering buying their first home needs to know about important changes to our HomeStart scheme; this scheme provides government grants to low and middle income New Zealanders of up to $20,000 per couple, within certain income and house price limits.

From August 1 this year, we increased the house price limits and income thresholds so more people can access these grants.

Auckland house price limits are now $600,000 for an existing home and $650,000 for a new-build home.

People can now access the scheme if they earn below $85,000 a year as an individual, or $130,000 as a couple. These changes will help more first home buyers in Auckland and around the country get a foot on the property ladder. According to independent data, around 30 percent of all house sales in Auckland during the first three months of 2016 were below the new Auckland HomeStart house price limit of $600,000.

We’re also seeing progress on the largest urban redevelopment ever undertaken in New Zealand – the Tamaki redevelopment.

The 2,800 state-owned houses in the area are being redeveloped to deliver 7,500 new homes – which will be a mix of social, affordable and privately owned homes.

On the other side of the city, former Defence Force land has been developed by the Hobsonville Land Company, a Housing New Zealand subsidiary. There’s a range of homes being built at Hobsonville Point to suit different Auckland families and at least 20 percent of them will be affordable – if not more.

These developments sit alongside other measures in the Government’s plan to speed up housing development in Auckland. We’ve created 154 special housing areas in Auckland to speed up the zoning and consenting process, and these areas have a potential yield of about 62,000 dwellings.

We’re reforming the Resource Management Act to make it easier to get houses consented and built, and we’re freeing up surplus Crown land for development. We’re also setting up a $1 billion Housing Infrastructure Fund to ensure the roads, water and other infrastructure required for new housing can get built.

By any definition, the Government has a comprehensive housing plan to address supply and affordability and we’re committed to continuing to build on this momentum in Auckland.

Yes I have written on this before, but this is a constant nagging issue we are striking with clients day in and day out currently… hence I felt I had to offer a further deliberation on it.

While customers love quality, benefits and service, they need bottom-line dollars to justify recommendations, compare offerings, benefits, and to find reduced costs or increased productivity.

So the age old question is: do you get the work and then acquire the staff… or get the staff and then chase the work?

Salespeople who refer to “quantified value” use the same language that customers understand and therefore succeed more often. Quantified benefits enhance selling, handling objections, negotiating, and enable differentiation.

It’s not a 'one-size fits all' unfortunately and will depend on the product or service you sell, the style of delivery and your levels of service. Nonetheless, the fundamental rule of thumb is that nothing sucks cash from a business like unprecedented growth. Also, heavy growth can distort and clutter quality of service delivery.

Here are the four steps that consultative salespeople use to effectively sell value.

If your business claims service delivery is paramount and a point of difference, then clearly you need to get the staff before the work (or figure out a method to get the work done on contract or sub-contract), so that your service levels, and therefore brand, are not diminished.

1. Search and discover the value opportunity Finding the customer value may be the biggest challenge. Few salespeople do it automatically and must be trained to search, find and assess the value. In short, they must determine what the specific customer benefits/applications are and how their benefits can generate value.

A big challenge around capacity modelling is knowing what you are going to produce, going to sell, when and how and why. Yes, many more questions than answers and very often you simply don’t know the answers - but educated guesses have to be made.

IMPACT indicators help identify generic, broad areas where savings and efficiency can be generated. In simple terms, IMPACT indicators tell the salesperson where to look for concrete data that will improve the customer’s operation. They are: Inventory, Money, People, Assets, Capability and Time.

Educated ‘what if’ analysis and educated stabs in the dark even. Remarkably, more often than not with the right guidance and questions, you get it more right than wrong.

2. Use IMPACT indicators to analyse the value It is essential to find a value on indicators to make the benefits specific, measurable, and memorable for the customer, and to aid in quantifying the indicators. A simple example: If your product or process can save 10 minutes per day per worker, this needs to be extrapolated over the number of workers, and converted to dollars for full impact.

It all starts with big picture planning. How big do you want to be? How busy do you want to be?

Some early yardage numbers need sorting. Average transaction value, average transaction frequency, margin analysis (how much do you make on each transaction) – then it becomes a game of just pure mathematics. The wonderful thing about this is you are in control of the mathematics; you can be as big or small, as busy, as profitable as you want to be.

The six IMPACT indicators are values that work together to help measure/predict the impact or results of the benefits your company can provide. This is a creative process and requires thought, time, and logic.

It sounds so very easy and it can be, but if you need a hand then get hold of a cost and management accountant and thrash out the ‘ifs, buts and maybes’.

3. Optimise the value It is important to project the values over a longer period of time. Obviously, if a benefit has a life cycle of six months, or is a one-time enhancement, you are limited. However, if you provide an ongoing benefit to the customer, you have earned the right to value it over a longer period of time.

There are loads of templates in Excel online, or there are fantastic bits of forecasting software so you can start working your numbers if you want to do most of the work yourself.

4. Present the value solution The salesperson has to support his or her presentation with collected customer data and a worksheet showing how the conclusion has been reached. This adds credibility to the forecast or prediction of performance improvements.

While it is not a guarantee of results, it enables the customer to understand your rationale, explore the possibilities and even add or negotiate the process.

There is a growing pressure on lawyers worldwide to ditch the archaic practice of charging clients by six minute units and convert to upfront fixed pricing.

Of all that I’ve learned over the years in providing services to property and facilities owners, one thing stands out. And that is to work from a generosity of spirit.

The power of flight is still something that I am in awe of; even after hundreds of flights around the globe I still see aviation as one of the greatest achievements of our lifetime. An interesting question I was recently asked was “do I see flight as creativity or innovation?”

British legal costs expert, Jim Diamond said in a recent post in the Centre for Policy Studies that “Steps should be taken to ensure fair practice in legal procedure. The ‘billable hour’ is an outdated and unsustainable billing method for legal services to continue. Alternative billing methods must be considered and legal procedure must be simplified to ensure that the legal market place thrives in the long term, and the price of law is not punitive.”

Lord Justice Jackson, a senior British judge, has proposed a move to fixed fee basis for all litigation work, suggesting that fees are capped. He is reported as saying “Remuneration on a time basis rewards inefficiency. Unrestrained costs drive parties to leave no stone unturned: the more costs mount up, the more determined each party becomes to ensure that the other party pays them. The result is inevitable – a civil justice system which is exorbitantly expensive.”

If you think about it, charging six minutes for having sent a short email or leaving a 30 second message does not sound right.

Time based billing places most of the commercial risk on the client’s shoulders.

There is regular commentary in the UK, United States and Canada that the market now expects greater transparency on fees and that fixed price billing is the economic tool that will allow consumers of legal services to compare and benchmark the cost of legal services.

So what of the New Zealand market? It is fair to say that the traditionalist lawyers are resistant to upfront fixed pricing.

They will tell you that it is sometimes impossible to predict how long a task may take. Incidentally, this view would clearly not wash with Lord Justice Jackson.

However, there are other lawyers in New Zealand who take the view that if you promote yourself as having the necessary legal expertise and experience, then providing an upfront fixed price, with the ability to review for contingencies, should go without saying.

There is also an issue of affordable access to justice. A number of lawyers are also concerned that more and more SMEs are muddling through legal issues themselves, because accessing quality legal services has become too expensive.

But, like a lot of things, market change will only occur with pressure from consumers and the increasing presence of more transparent, streamlined and cost effective alternatives.

A number of these alternatives are operating from a cloud basis.

That means offering your knowledge, time, credit, power, information and faith.

An efficiency expert might say time spent doing this could be spent more productively. But mean-spirited efficiency sends the message, “I’m not that interested in you”.

Ekaterina Walter, an occasional contributor for Forbes, is often asked how she achieved success and recognition.

Her answer: generosity.

It’s about being willing to give a piece of yourself, or offering an invaluable gift of your time and expertise, or extending your network to others. It’s about making someone else successful first. It’s about connecting people who share passions and aspirations. All without expecting something back.

A lot of companies dismiss this simple, but invaluable insight.

Strange really, since this golden rule of business has proven itself over and over again.

The opposite is a mindset of scarcity or coolness, where every dollar has to be counted and guarded and warmth given out sparingly. A scarcity mindset also risks condescension and other modes of disrespect.

Generosity may increase some costs a bit, and use more of your time, but if people become loyal to you, and/or refer others to you, you’ll have built a virtuous cycle.

Another way generosity operates is putting the happiness of clients first. This means everyone in your business knows that when deciding the right thing to do, having a happy client is the key consideration.

A computer business complained about users contacting the company only to “moan about a fault and then expect us to solve it immediately” and complaining about the expectations of the board.

It was suggested the business should look at the language it was using. Rather than referring to “the business”, “the board” and “end-users”, it should see “clients” or “customers”.

“You should be working together - not staring at each other with a mutual lack of sympathy,” said their advisor.

If creativity is doing the same thing you’ve always done in a slightly new way, and innovation is doing something you didn’t know existed yesterday, then I would have to say creativity led Orville and Wilbur Wright to inventing, building and flying the world’s first successful aeroplane.

The innovation of flight came well before 1903: people jumping off towers with bird-like wings strapped to their backs in the hope of staying off the ground, kites and hot air balloons.

All this demonstrated to the Wright brothers that something could defy gravity and fly. So, is innovation a word of our generation and as business leaders should we be challenging ourselves and our staff to be more creative?

Every organisation could gain immediate traction by making small improvements to the things they already do well. Just take a look at our Olympic athletes; they strive to gain a one percent increase which can be the difference between winning and not placing at all.

Most people are more creative than they give themselves credit for and given the time and opportunity to share ideas and insights, they often flourish. When someone is passionate and knowledgeable about a task or topic, they see new opportunities or a fresh way of doing something.

There is huge potential for us all to explore the “why didn’t we think of that before” moment in our working day. Many of us will underestimate an idea, believing that it’s too simple to be important.

In my view creativity in our organisations will be the difference between jumping off a building with wings strapped to our backs and travelling from London to New York on an Airbus A380. Encouraging your team to think differently and building creativity in the workplace is easier than you think and can be achieved in a number of ways: • Giving people time to explore their simple daily tasks

If a client is upset, a generous mindset will help you handle the emotion without getting tangled in it.

• Constantly questioning yourself and your work practices

We Kiwis have a tendency to get defensive if someone is upset, or just to dodge the issue. But if you talk to an upset or cross client the right way, with respect and truly addressing the heart of the problem, she or he may well become your best advocate.

• Acknowledging that not every idea will work

Creativity costs far less than innovation, it doesn’t always demand an increase in capability or resources and it builds great culture. You don’t need to be the next Wright brothers to turn something simple into something amazing.

Dealing with workplace manipulation

Shedding some light on tired eyes

Conflict at work will occur from time to time. But if there is an ongoing conflict with one person, and when you walk away from every interaction feeling like you have been manipulated, it is highly likely you are being manipulated.

Having enough light to be able to do day to day activities is something we take for granted.

Many years ago, I became a target for a manipulator who worked for me. Over a long period of time I often felt sick, angry and constantly frustrated, simply because I was not aware that I was being manipulated.

Today, with electric lighting available at our fingertips, you might think we’d be in a better position. However, as we spend more time using computers, our eyes are under huge demands.

Although I am an independent, strong and intelligent person, I lacked personal boundaries. As a result, I allowed this person to make decisions and make changes - basically doing what she wanted.

Having enough light is vital for maintaining good eye health.

This means having enough light going onto your computer screen and paperwork, but also avoiding glare. If there’s a window behind your screen your desk may appear to be welllit, but without enough light above your screen, your eyes may be automatically adjusting to shut out the excess light behind and on your desk surface.

I did this because I thought that she was a great worker and motivated to grow the business. The truth was that this person was intimidated by anyone who was smart or assertive.

The goal of a manipulator is to control and influence the behaviours and action of others. Because it’s about control, manipulation is prevalent in the workplace, which usually has a hierarchical structure. To control others, manipulators can abuse their positions, authority, or responsibilities, while not overstepping accepted boundaries in the workplace.

The control gestures manipulators use include emotional blackmail, dishonest yet persuasive language, discrediting others around them, deflecting the issue at hand when confronted, concealed threats, and lies or distortion of the facts. What’s interesting is most manipulators don’t realise they are doing this because their behaviour is fed by their own insecurities, or a view of life as a series of battles So how do you deal with manipulation when it’s your staff or co-worker? People do what they do because they can, so firstly, it’s important to define your limits and set boundaries by being assertive.

As masters of the emotional game, manipulators will use any emotional reaction on your part as evidence that you are the abuser. So it’s very important that you always deal with the behaviour, not the person - this will ensure you disengage emotionally and think rationally – unemotional assertiveness is an attitude a manipulator cannot match.

It’s remarkable to think that less than 200 years ago, prior to electric lighting, our days were predominantly controlled by the hours of daylight available.

This means without you being aware of it, you might be struggling to read what’s on the screen in front of you.

Likewise, if there’s a window behind you, there may be too much light hitting your screen.

Incorrect lighting on screens is also shown to have a direct correlation with shoulder/neck muscle tension, as we poke our heads towards the screen, trying to make it easier to read the content.

The ever-increasing amount of time we spend looking at our screens is another challenge. Reading from a printed document gives us a chance to physically move the paperwork around to change focal distance; not so easily done with a screen.

Modern glass office blocks with large windows can also make it challenging to control light effectively. So what to do?

Ideally, have a ceiling light directly above the workstation user, so that there is sufficient light on the screen but no glare. Alternatively, position a desk light over the top of the screen or screens.

Use blinds to control amount of light coming in. Ideally, position screens at 90 degrees to the window to avoid bright sun behind or light coming onto the screen.

Dealing effectively with manipulation is, at its core, about thinking differently, which is very easy on a rational level, but daunting on an emotional level.

Be conscious of the colours you use in a work area. Lots of bright white walls and desk tops will reflect more light and can cause glare and tired eyes. If using white on your walls, break this whiteness up with some large pictures or plants.

When you want to avoid hiring a manipulator in the first place, the first difficulty is spotting it when someone is in front of you for half an hour. I would suggest allowing the candidate to start working while monitoring their trial period very closely for negative behaviour. Another idea is to also get feedback from other staff.

And remember to give your eyes regular breaks by looking into the distance. If you don’t have a window, put up a large image as not only is it good for the eyes, it’s good for the brain, and helps shed a little light on your overall perspective.

The benefits of hiring staff with disabilities

Workplace diversity is having a higher importance placed on it as awareness about the importance and benefits of it grow. This shift is extremely encouraging, in particular for people in New Zealand who have a disability.

Adults with disabilities have struggled against employment inequality, but it is high time for employers to realise the benefits and embrace these valuable members of our society.

According to Statistics New Zealand, almost two-thirds of disabled adults under 65 are employed, and most of the remainder would like to have a job.

The survey found that 39 percent of disabled people aged 15 to 64 weren’t working in paid jobs in 2013. While 74 percent of those who weren’t employed said they would like to work if a job was available. That is a sizeable pool of potential employees who are capable and eager to work, which is worthwhile considering.

Unfortunately the report shows that many disabled people face difficulties in looking for jobs and tend to fare worse and are less likely to be successful when applying for a job than their nondisabled counterparts. Interestingly, relatively few disabled workers need special modifications or equipment in their workplace.

Those who are employed work in a wide range of occupations and industries throughout the country. More than a third work in either managerial or professional jobs, while many work in physically demanding occupations such as labouring or trade jobs.

Hiring a capable or qualified person with a disability brings greater benefits beyond just filling an open job; there’s a solid business case too. The benefits of hiring people with disabilities are: Long term commitment Those with a disability are less likely to seek new employment as regularly as their job hunting colleagues. In general they are more grateful for their position and are likely to be committed long term to their employer.

Exceptional abilities

Drive to succeed These employees are often dedicated to their work and have a strong desire to improve, exceed the performance of their peers and take on more responsibility. This in turn increases their company’s profitability.

Resourceful People with disabilities can face numerous challenges in daily life. This means they are often great problem solvers and are skilled at thinking creatively.

Greater camaraderie They often inspire their colleagues and have a positive effect on the entire workforce.

Continual improvement

Rather than focusing on the disability, look beyond that and see the ability. This exceptional group of people may be limited in some areas, but they often excel with highly developed skills in others.

Their performance at work steadily improves over time.

Even workers with more profound disabilities can make great improvements.

Happy to work

In general this group take less sick days than the general population. They are also known to be punctual, arriving for work and returning from breaks on time.

Employees with a disability are found to be extremely satisfied with their jobs. They love their work and will go the extra mile for the company.

Glass ceilings Tackling gender bias at your place

As a nation we proudly boast that we were the first country to give woman the vote in national elections. We are also one of the few countries in the world to have had two female heads of government, and one of only two countries to have had a female head of government directly succeed another, the other country being Sri Lanka.

The government enacted the Equal Pay Act 1972 to address direct and indirect discrimination in wage rates. It required equal pay for women and men in the same job.

On the surface New Zealand does a good job at appearing to have equal opportunities in the business world for women and men. But despite these progressive measures we’ve made towards gender equality, an unconscious gender bias impedes woman at every step of the employment ladder, from job application success to earning the big bucks at the top.

The New Zealand Ministry for Women has recorded the gender pay gap since 1998. The gender pay gap compares the median hourly earnings of women and men in full and part-time work. In 2015 it found that men earned 11.8 percent more than woman in the same role, that’s up from 9.1 percent in 2012.

CHANGE YOUR JOB CHANGE YOUR LIFE!

A Credit Suisse research report on women in senior management, released in 2014, found that women are still poorly represented in New Zealand boardrooms. According to the report, the percentage of women on boards in New Zealand was 19.6 percent in 2011, rising to 21.3 percent in 2012, but this figure had since fallen back to 19.6 percent in 2013.

While a NZX Gender Diversity Statistics report in the same year showed that male directors out numbered females by 88 percent to 12 percent across the 109 participating companies surveyed.

Businesses might like to believe that they make fair evaluations based on employees’ qualifications and quality alone, but the research suggests otherwise. Whether we like to acknowledge it or not, gender bias is still alive and well in our country.

So how can you make sure that your unconscious bias is kept at bay? Try implementing some of the following measures: Assign roles based on ability Society holds deeply rooted stereotypes that women are better suited to support, administration and communication based roles, whilst men perform better in leadership positions. It is these stereotypes that form the basis of gender discrimination at work. The allocation of work should be organised purely on the basis of employee’s abilities and not their gender or presumed skills.

Name-blind applications You could try hiring staff without knowing the sex of the applicants you’re evaluating. It’s called name-blind applications, where names are removed from CV’s. If you don’t know whether the applicants are women or men then your bias shouldn’t be triggered.

Equal pay Equal work should receive equal pay, but unfortunately in New Zealand it does not. Be the change and actively establish a policy in your business that guarantees both your male and female staff are paid equally for the same role.

Talk about it Make gender bias a point of discussion amongst senior staff and provide training on how to identify and erase it. Increasing the awareness of unconscious bias can go some way to influencing the outcome of decision around hiring and promotions. Over time it can contribute to a long term perception adjustment and equality in the workplace.

Familiarise yourself with anti-discrimination laws As an employer you should have a thorough understanding of the laws in place to prevent discrimination in the workplace, for example equal pay, harassment, victimisation and direct discrimination based on sex.

Minding your manners How to be a better colleague

Every office has one: the colleague you expediently time your lunch and coffee breaks to avoid.

not smiling at all deems you somewhat unapproachable and is a guaranteed way to make people avoid (and quite possibly dislike) you.

Yep, who we work with can make all the difference between looking forward to stepping into the office and counting down the minutes until we leave.

But what exactly is it about colleagues that make them more enjoyable, or less tolerable? And how can we make sure we ourselves are being the best colleague we can be?

Aside from the obvious etiquette – be ethical, be polite, be punctual, be honest, be respectful, avoid gossip – there are some behaviours that you can keep in check to ensure you aren’t becoming that colleague.

Be cheery – but not too cheery The axiom “a smile is infectious, you catch it like the flu” is no myth. A passing smile and a cheery salutation is an effortless way to put colleagues into good moods and show them that you: a) recognise their existence and, b) are happy to make time for them.

There is a line though – being too bubbly, especially when it means failing to notice that someone is having a bad day, can be interpreted as annoying and/or ignorant. On the other hand,

Master small talk Whether at the water cooler, in the break room or at your desk, intervals of small talk break up the day and make colleagues feel more comfortable around one other.

Small talk is not the time to dribble on about your personal problems outside the office, however. Keep topics light and non-invasive – think music, movies, travel, exercise, pets, hobbies, cuisine, weekend plans etc.

Listen and learn Small gestures can have big impact. Simply listening is validation that you respect your colleagues’ opinions. Listening also indicates that you have an empathetic ear that can be of great support should anyone need it.

Try to keep the ‘hear and be heard’ balance even (that is doing as much listening as you do speaking).

Compliment others – and give credit where credit’s due Whether it’s their latest project or something they’re wearing, there are many ways to compliment a colleague – and as long as it’s sincere it will be appreciated. Be sure to not overdo it or

you’ll risk being seen as a greaser whose compliments aren’t genuine, rather agenda setting.

Be ethical and diplomatic You can’t be completely sure of what your colleagues’ opinions are on every single matter, so be tactful when voicing yours. For all you know they might have a relative, friend or partner that is subject to whatever you’re discussing and your opinion on the matter could be causing offence or stress, not to mention creating an air of awkwardness. An easy way to check yourself before you wreck yourself is to imagine you are talking to your boss or parent in law, or the likes.

Avoid gossip As tempting as it is, and as easy as it can be to fall into, conversations regarding gossip, negative or facetious opinions of others are dangerous territory and should undoubtedly be avoided, or stopped in their tracks when they surface.

Whether you were being serious or not, your conversation is likely to make its way back to the person it concerned.

Show restraint This one’s wide reaching. Whether it’s the amount of cologne you spray each morning or the decision to not divulge every detail about the horrible thing that just happened to you, showing restraint is synonymous with showing respect.

The weakest link How to spot a workplace bully

Bullies aren’t just nasty children in the school playground. The reality is people can be bullied at any age in any environment.

Identifying a bully Anyone can be a bully at work whether it’s a boss, a co-worker or a client. If you’re a victim it’s important to recognise your situation and act.

Signs you are being bullied include: • Being belittled and extensively micromanaged

And it’s not as uncommon as you’d think.

It has been reported that a 1,700-person academic survey revealed New Zealand to have the second-worst rate of workplace bullying in the developed world, with one in five workers afflicted.

• Having unwanted gossip and rumours about you spread

Indentifying workplace bullies isn’t always easy as it can often be subtle and devious, such as efforts to undermine credibility, performance or confidence. Personal attacks and put downs are also common methods of bullying that are more easily recognised.

The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment define workplace bullying as “repeated and unreasonable behaviour directed towards a worker or a group of workers that creates a risk to health and safety”.

It affects people physically and mentally, resulting in increased stress levels, decreased emotional wellbeing, reduced coping strategies and lower work performance.

• Constantly brining up your trivial mistakes again and again, especially if it’s done in front of colleagues • Having your achievements ignored and your potential for promotion overlooked • Being given an excessive amount of work or not receiving all of the necessary information making it impossible to complete a job • Causing public humiliation and/or excessively yelling or swearing • Backhanded comments designed to be condescending • Being excluded from necessary team meetings or emails isolating you socially and professionally.

How to respond appropriately Assess the bully’s behaviour; is it a one off incident or repeated attacks over a period of time? If it is an ongoing issue then you need to take action.

If possible, gather evidence of the bullying.

This might mean keeping notes of your interactions, saving threatening emails or asking a witness to support your claim.

Know your organisation’s policy on workplace bullying so you have a better understanding of how your employer will handle the situation, then report the bully.

It can be difficult, especially if the bully has knocked your confidence. Report the bullying as factually and objectively as possible. Recount your experiences and share your documented proof.

Learning from your own advice Why being a mentor makes good business sense We know that it’s important in business to give something back. Not only is it good for the business, but it’s also good for your own personal and professional development as a manager and leader.

We talk to Spark Digital’s Vanessa Sorrenson about how mentoring others can bring about positive change.

These days it’s popular for organisations to give their staff a ‘volunteer day’ where they get paid to help out at a local charity.

But it’s quite another story for individuals to commit their own time over a four year period to meet regularly with a young person from a vastly different background.

Thirteen years ago when she was still scrambling her own way up the corporate ladder, Vanessa Sorrenson decided to commit to being one of a group of foundation mentors in the YWCA Auckland Future Leaders Programme. This life changing developmental programme is where young women (aged 14-18 years) from low decile schools are paired with a female mentor who helps to develop their leadership skills, resilience, and confidence.

Today Vanessa holds an enviable role at Spark Digital as GM, Enterprise Clients. She cites the main reason she originally put her hand up to be a mentor was as a way to give back to others.

She readily admits to being unprepared for the far-reaching benefits it would bring to her own personal and professional development and indirectly, to her employer.

Vanessa believes that her experience as a mentor really helped her reflect on her own leadership strengths and weaknesses and

that this learning has helped shape her into the successful leader she is today.

“Being involved as a mentor in this programme was an enriching experience in more ways than I could have imagined. I underestimated how much I would learn about myself as part of the process of being a mentor.

“In order for me to be a successful mentor I needed to look critically at my own leadership style which helped my development, both professionally and personally.

“The young woman whom I mentored was quite different to me in her background and personality, and that made the experience richer for me, because I had to look at things from a different set of eyes.

"I am much more of an A-type personality and very driven, whereas my mentoree was more considered and planned. This was an amazing lesson for me to learn because it pointed out how two completely different people are both correct, as long as you are clear on your plan and what success looks like. My view wasn’t always the right path. It might sound like a cliché but I think I gained as much from her as she did from me.”

900 million people are unfulfilled with their work Here’s what to do if you’re one of them A single entrepreneur, a single artist, a single author, a single startup or a single company cannot change the world - but what about 900 million of us?

There are 900 million people in 142 countries who are unfulfilled with what they do in life [Gallup Poll]. In the US alone, 70 percent of people working are unhappy and don’t care for what they do.

Millennials are the most unfulfilled and care least about what they do at work. This is an enormous squandered potential, a lot of misdirected minds and many unhappy people.

Just think about the positive impact these people can make in the world if they started doing something they valued.

The majority of the 79 million US Millennials are either unemployed, underpaid, or weighed down with student loans, and according to Bankrate.com, one in four Millennials has more debt than savings. Some 94 percent of college students currently graduate with debt, so what will they do when they graduate?

According to research at MIT and Oxford University, almost half of the jobs will be automated in the next 20 years. Google’s top rated futurist speaker, Thomas Frey, predicts that two billion jobs will be automated by 2030. What will all these people do when a robot or an app will replace them?

Here are three important points to keep in mind for the future: 1. There is a world of unusual jobs out there, from the cringe worthy to the obscene. So if you’re looking for a change of profession here are some of the more off the wall options you could consider… just to remind yourself that anything’s possible.

Train pusher The morning and evening commute at Japanese train stations can get extremely crowded. Professional train pushers are hired during rush hour to literally shove as many people onto the trains as possible. Train pushers assist commuters by pulling train doors apart slightly to stuff a bag, jacket or even a person in properly so the door will close.

Indian ear cleaner Ear cleaners roam the streets of India equipped with a steel needle, a wad of cotton and a pair of tweezers. The ear cleaners remove ear wax, dust and foreign objects from their customers’ ears using homemade ear buds and rudimentary tools. But it’s a dying profession as the younger generation opt to use storebought cotton buds instead.

Dog surfing instructor If you’ve ever wanted your dog to take surfing lessons it can now be arranged thanks to dog surfing instructors in San Diego. Many owners who want their dog to enter the world of show business have been known to hire a dog surfing instructor to give their pooch private one-on-one lessons.

Professional hugger Everyone needs a hug once and a while, but many people don’t have a significant other to cuddle with. This is where a professional hugger comes in. They will snuggle with their client whilst charging up to $80 an hour. Clothes are worn by both parties the whole time.

Professional bridesmaid Professional bridesmaids are there to assist brides on their big day. The undercover bridesmaid acts as the bride’s personal

assistant leading up to and on the big day. They are also hired if the bride doesn’t have enough friends to stand by her side.

Dog food taster You’d be forgiven for thinking this job is held by dogs, but it is not. Humans are hired by pet food companies to test dog food.

They test the taste, quality and nutritional value of the product.

After holding the food in their mouth for a short time they spit it out and score it.

Professional line stander If you can’t take the day off work to stand in line for the new iPhone release, then a professional line-stander can take your place. They’ll even wait in line overnight to guarantee their clients get their hands on what it is they are after. Some line-standers make up to $1,000 a week.

Bags of success My Food Bag’s Cecilia Robinson

Cecilia Robinson is the modern day definition of Superwoman. She is the co-CEO and mastermind behind My Food Bag, a rapidly growing company turning out multi-million dollar revenues. Simultaneously she is a dedicated, doting mother of two young children.

My Food Bag answers the tricky question families’ face every day – what are we having for dinner tonight? The increasingly popular service is based on the home delivery of food parcels containing all the ingredients needed for a week’s main meals together with simple, healthy and delicious recipes.

The business was co-founded by Cecilia and her husband James Robinson, together with celebrity chef and brand ambassador, Nadia Lim and highprofile business personality Theresa Gattung.

Cecilia explains she and husband James run the business together. He oversees the finance, marketing and IT departments, while she runs customer love, operation and procurement and the development kitchen.

“My husband and I are fortunate to have a fantastic working relationship – we complement each other’s skill sets and enjoy working closely together.”

Nadia is the “fantastic” brand ambassador whose food philosophy guides the recipe development in the test kitchen and last, but not least Theresa, fondly known by Cecilia as TG, brings a wealth of business knowledge and connections. “The mix of the people involved has been our magic formula.”

The powerful team have a lofty goal; they want to revolutionise the way New Zealand’s eat. “We want to create healthier and stronger communities throughout New Zealand using food.”

While speaking to Cecilia over the phone, she tells me she’s breastfeeding her threemonth-old daughter Leila and keeping one eye

on four-year-old -son Thomas as we speak; a handful for any parent, “but that shouldn’t affect our interview” she coolly says. And it doesn’t - she manages all three tasks simultaneously without missing a beat.

Perhaps her ability to multi-task is just a glimpse into how she won the 2012 HER Business Woman of the Year award, the 2013 EY Young Entrepreneur of the Year and the 2014 Business and Innovation category at the annual NEXT Woman of the Year Awards.

Now or never Originally from Sweden, Cecilia found the inspiration for My Food Bag on a trip visiting her home-country. “I saw this concept overseas and fell in love with it. Immediately I thought ‘that’s what I need’! I love cooking, but I hate the day to day grind of trying to think of what to cook.”

During that stage in their lives the couple was running their first outrageously successful startup, Au Pair Link – a live-in childcare service.

Cecilia was also pregnant with their first child.

“I’d gone on maternity leave and I got sick of doing the things you normally do, like cooking and ironing. I said to my husband that I’d had the idea for My Food Bag and I wanted to write the business plan he looked at me pretty bewildered, but said ‘yip, go ahead honey’, so I did.

“At 41 weeks I was navigating a fat belly while leaning over the computer typing up the business plan for My Food Bag, it was pretty crazy.

“I clicked ‘save’ on the business plan about four hours before I went into labour with Thomas.

Four weeks after I’d given birth we were presenting the plan to the board of Au Pair Link.

“

I saw this concept overseas and fell in love with it.

Immediately I thought ‘that’s what I need’! I love cooking, but I hate the day to day grind of trying to think of what to cook.

“Looking back now it was one of my best decisions to pursue My Food Bag when I was just about to give birth! It’s taught me that there is never the right time to pursue a dream and that really it’s the things we don’t do that we generally regret.”

A growing appetite Launched originally in Auckland in March 2013, My Food Bag struck a chord with kiwis overnight. Now, just over three years on, it’s grown significantly, sweeping the country. So much so it was named National Rising Star in the NZ Deloitte Fast 50 Awards in 2014.

Forty thousand families nationwide from Invercargill to Whangarei now rely on it for their evening meal. It’s catching on across the ditch too after jumping the Tasman in 2014 with operations in Melbourne and Sydney.

“We’ve had huge growth, our forecast revenue for the 2017 financial year is expected to be more than $135 million and that’s in less than three and a half years of being in business. So that’s pretty incredible growth.”

Double act Being a full time mum and a business leader is a “really interesting juggle,” Cecilia says, but she has got the double act down to a fine art.

Most people think that they have to separate their work from their personal life, but the trick to fulfilling both roles equally is by integrating the two she says.

Both she and James are focused on being working parents, which has been made possible by getting the children into a routine that works for them. She stays present for Leila and Thomas during the day and pops into the office while Leila is napping.

She says James often jokes that she creates companies just to make her life easier, but that’s just an added bonus she laughs. “I’m really passionate about solving real problems that families come across every day. I identify with the target market and see what the problems and opportunities are because we have the same problems and struggles as any other family.”

Just as her time is split so too are her goals.

Personally her focus is on raising a happy family and spending a lot of time together. But of course the business woman in her has big goals too.

She aims to continue the development and expansion of the My Food Bag empire. What that will actually materialise into is under wraps for now, but no doubt it will be a raging success. AT

“We have a New Zealand base,” Doyle says.

“We travel to Christchurch every six weeks rather than six months, so we can sort out issues quickly and efficiently. In many cases we can get a message to our production facility in Auckland, which is open seven days a week, and have the item shipped back down within a few days.

“We’re extremely flexible and efficient, and when it comes to weddings and events, that’s exactly what you need in a tailor.”

HAYDEN PADDON

Fourteen to 16 hours per day, temperatures of up to 55 to 60 degrees Celsius and speeds of up to 220km/h; that’s a typical day in the life of 29 year old World Rally Championship (WRC) driver Hayden Paddon.

His earliest memories of racing evoke an exuberant, youthful side of him. “I remember racing go-karts at the local family kart club when I was nine, getting covered in mud and trying to win as many trophies as I could,” Hayden recalls.

The South Cantabrian just notched a major milestone – not only for himself but for our little nation – when he became the first New Zealander ever to win a leg of the WRC.

The early years

He solidified his capability at international level by finishing ninth overall and ahead of all the PWRC regulars.

In 2002 at the age of 15, the same week he’d passed his Learner’s driver license, Hayden competed in his first rally, Rally Hamner.

“It was always a dream to be a WRC driver, but it was not until we won the Pirelli scholarship that I believed that it was possible,” he says.

He went on to compete in the New Zealand Rally Championship in 2006, winning both the junior and rookie titles, and in 2007 made his WRC debut as a wildcard entry at the Production World Rally Championship event in New Zealand, retaining his junior title and coming within one point of winning the championship outright, a title he would go on to claim the following year.

Geraldine’s backcountry had certainly proved the perfect landscape for a young Hayden to hone his talents. Between its gentle rolling hills and its winding, shingle roads, it’s little wonder that gravel came to be Hayden’s favourite surface to compete on.

So how exactly does one get from small-town New Zealand onto the WRC circuit, let alone winning a stage of it? For Hayden, rallying isn’t just a sport, nor is it a hobby or occupation.

It’s a vocation, a way of life, and the only way of life he wants to know.

Racing is Hayden’s blood. His father Chris was a rally driver long before Hayden was born, and while Hayden felt no pressure to follow in his father’s footsteps he certainly felt a desire to.

“But this also stretched into practising on the back lawn nearly every weekend, ripping up the grass.”

He started out in go-karts at the age of six and by the age of 12, as soon as he was old enough to obtain his motorsport license, he made the move to cars. From there his hunger for the sport only intensified.

But 2009 was a particularly significant year in the amateur’s career. Not only did he retain his New Zealand title but he also won the Pacific Cup and qualified for the Pirelli Star Driver Asia-Pacific final at Rally Australia, with the fastest time of the opening stage.

This earned him the Pirelli Star Driver scholarship, a fully-funded programme for six events of the 2010 WRC season.

Not surprisingly he was also the worthy recipient of a $50,000 Rising Stars scholarship through Rally New Zealand, which gave him the crucial funding needed to complete his 2010 PWRC campaign.

“It certainly helped growing up in the country, racing around on the paddocks in the farm and occasionally taking the long way to school or work via some back roads”.

But more than its unique geography, it was the support of the Geraldine community that helped spawn and shape Hayden’s career. “Coming from a small town helped me as everyone knew what I was doing; 90 percent of the businesses in the town helped me and everyone was supportive. It was amazing.

“Thanks to a group of dedicated South Canterbury businessmen and shareholders, we were able to get together the funding for the 2011 season, and we repaid the faith and trust people put in us by winning the PWRC that year.

“It was a crucial year for the future.”

Life on the road “Driving a rally car is not like a road car – long three day events (up to 14-16 hours competing per day), high temperatures (up to 55-60 degrees in the car on hot events), high adrenalin and a high pressure environment means the body is under pressure to perform at the highest level,” says Hayden.

Training is therefore focused on a lot of areas – cardio fitness, strength, balance, mental training and psyche. “Each day would be made up of 2-3 hours physical training, up to one hour mental training, along with study work of the next upcoming event.”

“After the scholarship year in 2010 we had to fund our own campaign to stay in the WRC in 2011, and we knew if we disappeared that we would never get back again.”

In 2015 Hayden signed a contract to stay with Hyundai Motorsport until the end of 2018. It’s a valued partnership; one that Hayden believes can win the WRC.

He set about establishing Hayden Paddon Rallysport Global Ltd – a conglomerate of generous locals who recognised Hayden’s talent and dedication and were all too happy to provide the financial backing that would help see the young man realise his dreams.

While Hyundai Motorsport is made up of roughly 200 people of nationalities from all around the world, Hayden’s direct team is a much smaller affair involving just himself, his co-driver of 11 years, John Kennard and his fiancé and PR guru Katie.

“It’s like a family within the team and our partnership with Hyundai NZ, and I believe we can win the WRC with them.”

But it won’t be without challenge and sacrifice.

“It’s not as glamorous as everyone thinks – we spend very little time in NZ, a lot of time in airports and we are away from family and friends for 11 months of the year. Being part of a professional team is very different compared to when back in New Zealand running the team with family and friends.”

There are still three remaining events of the season: Spain, then Great Britten, and the final event in Australia in November.

The WRC certainly absorbs most of his time but he’s not complaining, rather saying he’s “living the dream and working towards the ultimate goal”.

And that’s not to say there’s no time for personal endeavours.

Hayden is working on some exciting projects for the future, as well as looking forward to tying the knot with fiancée Katie in the next year or two.

Despite having travelled to and experienced many exotic locations, Hayden still believes New Zealand is the best place in the world.

He makes the most of his time spent at home by visiting family and friends and, if there’s time, squeezing in some mountain biking and a few rounds of golf.

Paying it forward Given the amount of success he’s enjoyed you’d be forgiven for thinking Hayden mightn’t be humble, but you’d be wrong. His unassuming persona is unwavering.

He regards both his co-driver and fiancée as integral to his success, and the same goes for those who have joined him and stuck by him on his ambitious journey.

“Rally has given me a lot and I would not be where I am without the help hundreds of people have given me. I want to see the sport grow and to give something back in a small way.”

He’s been hard at work since the beginning of 2016 establishing the Paddon Rally Foundation with the vision of growing rally sport in New Zealand.

Recognising that he wouldn’t be where he is without the immense support and guidance of many, the Paddon Rally Foundation is set up to attract new competitors to the sport and provide a support network that helps develop talent.

“It’s in its early stages but we will be accepting applications at the end of this year and the target is to assist many competitors each year of all levels – to encourage more people into the sport and keep people in the sport.

“Rallying is not just a sport for me; it’s a life and a passion.”

Suzuki’s new five door compact hatch, the Baleno, seems not to be making any waves… air waves that is.

Whangarei’s vessel experts An island nation nestled comfortably in the south-west of the Pacific Ocean, New Zealand’s close relationship with the sea cannot be underestimated.

Yet, in much the same way as our road vehicles require regular maintenance and repairs, so too do the vessels which transport both us and our cargo across the water.

Based in Whangarei, Ship Repair NZ is the largest privately owned ship repair company north of Auckland, providing ship repairs, marine fabrication and heavy engineering, custom ship refits and ship surveys on a wide range of marine vessels.

“The vessel was initially built in Whangarei,” Ship Repair NZ project manager, Nick Eilering, explains of the 36 metre vessel. “So in a way it comes home every two years to have scheduled maintenance carried out. This year we carried out stage one of a mid-life refit process.”

“We carried out structural repairs to the internal frames and hull plating,” Nick explains. “We stripped the entire aft refrigeration tunnel. We pulled out the driveline system, which involved taking out three different drive shafts and manufacturing two new intermediate shafts to put back in.”

In the refrigeration tunnel, all the piping systems were replaced – brine, bilge, hydraulic and fuel piping systems. The refrigeration tunnel was then fully sandblasted and painted with a threecoat paint system.

Local fabricator marks four decades in the business Stainless Engineering Co Ltd reaches its 40th milestone this year.

Director Leanne Morris attributes the stainless steel fabrication company’s success in a competitive industry to staying locally based and placing an emphasis on providing exemplary service and quality.

She says while many companies have moved manufacturing overseas to save costs, Stainless Engineering has stayed local to enable them to provide a better product and to respond swiftly to local needs.

“Staying local is one of our strengths,” she says.

“We know the local standards, we can react promptly to any industry changes, and we know the local area and the requirements needed to suit our geographical areas.”

Stainless Engineering was started 40 years ago by Leanne’s father, Geoff Morris, and his business partner Wayne Lye. One of the company’s original areas of expertise was producing stainless steel fabricated products for the wine industry, which was a major growth sector in the 1970s. It now fabricates stainless steel products for a wide range of industries, including food, beverage, dairying, chemical processing, and pharmaceuticals.

Its core business remains industrial processing equipment, pressure vessels, storage and mixing tanks, kettles, blenders, platforms, condensers, strainers, augers, pipework and ducting, in stainless steel from 1.5mm up to heavy plate.

Geoff Morris became sole owner of the company in the mid 2000s, and Leanne took over from her father in 2011.

The fabrication plant is still located on the original site in East Tamaki and they have clients that have been with them since the company’s early days.

This continuity also extends to the staff. Leanne says they have staff members who have been with Stainless Engineering for many years, others have done their apprenticeship with the company,

gone to work elsewhere, then returned to Stainless Engineering. She attributes this loyalty to the company culture established by her father 40 years ago which continues to this day.

“Dad’s values meant he was always fair and honest with his clients and his employees and that has been our strength and I have continued with these values.”

The company is continuing to grow and Leanne says the challenge now is to continue her father’s legacy and ensure it survives and prospers for another 40 years.

The Kumeu site also gives Global Engineering 1,500 sqm of yard and storage space and a further 400 sqm of office and communal business space.

Insultech – making homes healthy For too many years New Zealand’s predominantly European-style timber-framed houses let in draughts and allowed heat to escape.

By the 1940s the ceilings and walls of over 50 percent of new dwellings contained mould and researchers concluded that the solution was to increase both thermal insulation and ventilation.

Until the early 1960s however, all house insulation material had to be imported and so in practice this was available only to wealthy or knowledgeable builders and owners, and it was not until 1978 that the level of thermal insulation required in new houses was specified by law.

Nowadays the benefits of home insulation are far more appreciated; heating and cooling account for 50 – 70 percent of the energy consumed in the average home. Inadequate insulation and air leakage are leading causes of energy waste.

“Last year the Government announced new rules requiring landlords to ensure their rental properties, many of which are older houses, are insulated by July 2019,” says Stephen Nicolson of Insultech Insulation. “Some 180,000 privately tenanted rental properties are likely to require retrofitting of insulation and that is our specialty.”

A passion for perfect building John Cran took a year off work as a self-employed builder, going so far as to change his mobile number so he wasn’t distracted while building his dream home; a 12-14 month process from design to completion, including demolition of the previous building.

Experts at putting the pieces together Much of local firm DC Weld’s work is picked up through word of mouth, with the company taking on many of its contracts when other contractors fall behind, holding up work sites.

“Our quality of work really sets us apart and we guarantee our workmanship,” managing director Ron Barry explains.

“While other companies might offer a cheaper rate, sometimes their products end up failing and often we are called in to complete the work.”

Such was the case with the company’s previous involvement in the Victoria Park Tunnel project.

The final link in the NZ Transport Agency’s Central Motorway Improvement (CMI) initiatives, the Victoria Park Tunnel upgrade was designed to address the bottleneck on the Auckland motorway system between Newmarket and the Auckland Harbour Bridge, for the 150,000 vehicles a day which travel the route.

“One welding company had been working on a particular job approximately two weeks and when their work was tested the day before the concrete trucks were due in, the work failed,” Ron says.

“The main contractor called us in to remedy the welds and, in one day, still managed to get the works completed in time for the concrete pour – most importantly, all our work passed testing.”

When the Vector Arena’s highly complex and extremely large roof with its twin curved planes started sagging, DC Weld was engaged by the main contractor to assist three other welding companies.

By putting a crew on day shift and another crew on night shift, the modifications were completed on time. “Due to our high weld test pass rate and superior quantities achieved, the other welding companies were let go and we were kept on until the very end of the project.

“On several occasions we have worked all through the night, weekends included, on the main diggers at quarries which supply the product to the crushing plant. We have worked around the clock to get the machines back into operation regardless of the weather,” Ron says.

“We’re very dependable, we will get the work done and to the highest quality doing whatever it takes to get the job done. We can offer a 24/7 service – though I’m not sure we should promote that,” he laughs of the long hours the crew sometimes have to take on for emergency repairs.

It’s this flexibility and workmanship which has seen the company involved in a diverse range of projects, from small fabrication and welding jobs through to custom fabrication and welding

services for large projects and offering a mobile service in addition to the Auckland workshop.

Ron’s son Joseph, a company director who is also on the tools, is currently working on a water delivery tanker. “This is specialised work involving stainless steel welding,” Ron says.

“We can fix or maintain machinery including carbon steel and alloys, pumps, bases and piping.”

A previous project was a $47 million cement storage terminal on the Ports of Auckland for Golden Bay Cement known as Project Eastport, a fully automated 25,000 tonne storage and load out facility. “Again we displaced other welding companies and worked on to the very end,” Ron says.

“

“The owners used to work elsewhere and when they started Weld IT I was one of their first and biggest customers. I like working with people that know what they’re talking about because when we order product, it has to be right and we need to maintain that quality, which is what we get from Weld IT.”

There’s even an exciting new project in the pipelines which is currently in prototype stage after 12 months of product development. It involves a world famous carver who can “turn blocks of wood into $150,000 carvings” and Ron says the new product will see ongoing demand from artists and sculptors globally. But that’s about all that can be said at this stage.

DC Weldhas been engaged in New Zealand’s longest tunnel and motorway project – the $1.6 billion Waterview Connection since the project began in 2011, offering onsite certified procedural welding and heat bending to reinforce bars, amongst other things, and fabricating components for the project from their workshop.

“We also do work for Fulton Hogan, who are in charge of repairs and maintenance of the Auckland motorways and over-bridges. When they’ve had accidents such as excavators on transporter trucks hitting and damaging the underside of bridges, we’ve worked overnight to complete the repairs,” Ron adds.

In fact, on two occasions, DC Weld has been repairing the motorway bridges at night and repairing the very machines that hit the bridges in our workshop during the day.

Mastering the craft The journey started for Warren at the Devonport naval dockyard where he gained an apprenticeship in the electrical industry. He stayed there for a total of nine years before moving to the Ministry of Works. It was there where he was inspired to break out on his own and start the business.

“I had no cliental, I basically just got a van sign written and waited for the phone to ring and fortunately it did. We quickly got busy doing marine work and the rest is history,” Warren says.

Excellence in innovation has evolved over three decades as the team has adapted their services across an extensive range of vessels including trailer boats, commercial boats, classic yachts, research vessels, and everything in between.

During the 30 years in business EAL Electric has seen a lot of change in the business and throughout the industry. In its early years, its workload was completely locally based, today about 90 percent of its marine work is re-fits on international vessels.

“It’s really rewarding to see how far we’ve come,” Jan says, “from our small beginnings as one man working from the back of his van.” Warren often jokes he’s had a hand in training the majority of the marine electricians in the industry, but in all honesty it isn’t far from the truth she says.
