Beautiful and budget-friendly

Weddings are beautiful any time of year, but tying the knot outside of peak season can be a smart move, especially when you have the right team on your side.

With Happy Hire, couples can create a stunning marquee wedding that feels entirely their own, all while saving money and skipping the stress that often comes with traditional venues during peak months.

Summer weddings may be the norm, but autumn and winter bring their own kind of magic—and savings. Off-season dates mean you’re more likely to secure your preferred suppliers and avoid the price hikes that come with high demand.

A winter wedding, for instance, can feel intimate and romantic with the right setup. Happy Hire’s extensive range of heating options, cosy furnishings, and warm lighting packages means you can build a comfortable, elegant atmosphere, even on a chilly evening.

Their range of marquees includes everything from structured frame marquees to boho-style stretch tents. You can hire flooring, tables, chairs, lighting, and even generators, all through one supplier. The convenience of bundling services with Happy Hire not only simplifies planning but also leads to better value and fewer logistical headaches.

Happy Hire doesn’t just offer products, they offer solutions.

Here’s how couples can get the most out of their wedding budget:

Decorate with purpose: Happy Hire’s rustic furniture, wine barrels, festoon lights, and archways can help you achieve an upscale look without buying décor you’ll never use again.

Skip the venue stress: With your marquee on private land, you’re not bound by strict venue rules or closing times. This added freedom brings fun and flexibility to your day.

Plan ahead for comfort: The team at Happy Hire can help you plan for unpredictable weather with sidewalls, heaters, and durable flooring. That way, you’re covered no matter what the forecast throws your way.

With branches across New Zealand and years of experience helping couples create their perfect day, Happy Hire will help you design a day that reflects your style, suits your budget, and leaves your guests talking.

The Flaxmill

CELEBRATE YOUR WAY

Inside, the venue still shows off its industrial roots with high ceilings, raw concrete walls, and vintage fittings. The main hall can comfortably accommodate up to 100 guests for a seated meal or 150 for a cocktail-style event, making it versatile enough for everything from intimate weddings to larger parties. Whether you’re hosting a long-table feast or a relaxed gathering with food trucks and mingling, the space can be tailored to suit your style. 473

Tucked into the peaceful countryside near Oxford, just under an hour from Christchurch, The Flaxmill is a wedding venue that offers something a little different.

It’s not your typical winery or marquee-on-the-lawn setup.

Originally built in the 1940s, The Flaxmill was once one of several flax processing sites across the South Island. After the war, the building served as a grain and hay store before being repurposed into its current form. Previous owners saw the potential in its bones and decided to breathe new life into it, without sanding away the history. Now owned by Ben and Campbell Johnstone, the pair continue to honour its character while introducing their own modern touches.

WOODSTOCK ROAD, OXFORD 7495

A commercial-grade kitchen is available for caterers, and there’s a fully equipped bar area on site. This level of flexibility means couples aren’t boxed into fixed packages; they have the freedom to shape the day their way.

The Flaxmill is designed to be adaptable. Whether you’re after a laid-back afternoon garden wedding or a more formal evening celebration, the space can shift to suit your style. There’s also a smaller space called The Vault—a luxurious whiskey lounge designed for a late-night tipple, offering an intimate setting perfect for unwinding in style.

Outdoors, you’re surrounded by the calm beauty of Canterbury’s countryside. There’s plenty of room for ceremonies on the lawn, lawn games, or mingling under the trees, and the rural setting makes for fantastic photos.

For couples wanting more than just a day, The Flaxmill offers the perfect setup for a weekend-long celebration under the stars with on-site luxury glamping.

What couples love most is the feeling that The Flaxmill is “theirs” for the day. It’s not overly styled or restrictive. Instead, it’s a blank canvas that encourages people to bring their own flair and make the space feel like home, if only for a day.

Honouring your heritage

At their heart, weddings are a reflection of identity. Two people uniting to shape a future together, while drawing on their pasts.

Weaving cultural traditions and elements into your wedding day is a beautiful way to celebrate who you are, deepen its meaning, and celebrate connection and community. By adding a few thoughtful touches here and there, you can create a wedding that feels personal, memorable, and full of meaning.

The emotional focus of the day, the ceremony is a powerful time to honour your culture. Around the world, the ceremony is more than a mere exchange of vows. In Hindu ceremonies, the Saptapadi, or “seven steps,” mark seven shared vows. A Jewish couple might marry under a chuppah to symbolise the home they’ll build together. Scottish handfasting sees couples tie their hands together with a ribbon to show their bond. A Nigerian couple might incorporate the Yoruba tradition of tasting four flavours—sour, bitter, hot, and sweet—to represent the different emotions of marriage.

As American chef James Beard said, food is a common ground, a universal experience. South African bobotie and Lebanese mezze, Vietnamese pho and Polish pierogi, Mexican tamales and Filipino adobo; sharing traditional food invites guests into your world. Imagine a dessert table featuring gulab jamun, dulce de leche, or Hungarian kürtőskalács. Being intentional about food choices can turn dinner into something delectable and memorable.

Whether it’s a Chinese cheongsam, a Samoan puletasi, or a family heirloom passed down through generations, your clothing can tell a story. A patterned sash, some embroidery, a piece of jewellery that ties into your background, or even small details like a culturally lucky colour or pattern, can personalise a modern style. What you wear can quietly honour the generations that came before you while feeling entirely like you.

CONTINUES OVER PAGE

Music is one of the best ways to celebrate culture. Greek weddings often embrace kalamatianos, and Lebanese celebrations might begin with dabke. You might include a bagpipe, sitar, or taonga pūoro in your ceremony, or surprise guests with a salsa interlude or Irish fiddle set. Understanding the roots of these sounds and movements creates moments that resonate with your values: joy, unity, resilience, celebration.

Decorations can prove immersive, symbolic touches of love. Persian rugs could line the aisle. Cherry blossoms could be scattered. Celtic knots, Māori koru, Andean textiles, and Mexican papel picado could be featured. The list goes on. Small yet impactful, details like these should not be forgotten. Let your surroundings speak to your story as much as your words and vows do.

A thoughtful favour tied to your culture can be the perfect parting gift. Consider a jar of homemade chutney, a woven fan, a traditional sweet, a packet of tea, a blessed stone, or a handcrafted ornament – items that invite your loved ones to learn, reflect, and celebrate with you. These tokens don’t just say thank you; they say, this is who we are, and we’re thrilled you were part of it.

Authentic, beautiful, personal

There is a quiet beauty in a wedding that feels personal. For many brides, planning a DIY wedding isn’t just about saving money; it is about creating a day that feels intentional, meaningful and real.

DIY does not have to mean doing everything yourself. It can easily mean taking a hands-on approach to the elements that matter most to you – those small touches that not everyone may notice, but you will look back on and appreciate. This could be as simple as curating your floral arrangements, or even sourcing locally made favours.

When it comes to décor, simplicity can often speak louder than extravagance. Using seasonal flowers, repurposing glass bottles or vases, for example, are subtle ways to make something beautiful with minimal impact. Many brides are also skipping traditional bars and opting for drink stations, where beverages are chilled in large bowls of ice, with handwritten signs and garnishes for a relaxed, inviting feel.

Designing your own menus or place cards is another way to add personality to your day. With a number of templates to use online, it is easy to find something that matches your style, whether you’re leaning rustic, modern, or somewhere in between.

Even florals, usually outsourced, can be DIY. Some brides go down the path of arranging their own bouquets or centrepieces using market or garden flowers, either on their own or with the help of close friends and family the day before. Not only is it cost-effective, but it also gives you some time for creativity amongst the chaos of wedding planning.

Many of these small, handmade decisions are part of a bigger move towards conscious weddings – celebrations that take into consideration sustainability, local sourcing, and authenticity over excess.

DIY doesn’t have to be overwhelming at all. Start with one or two elements that feel meaningful to you and build from there. Involve people around you who share your vision, and don’t be afraid to ask for help. Your wedding doesn’t need to be perfect, it just needs to feel like yours.

Pro tips 5

1. DETERMINE WHO WILL BE CONTRIBUTING TO THE WEDDING

Before diving into any planning, have an honest chat with your partner (and possibly your families) about who’s pitching in financially. Just keep in mind that accepting financial assistance from others often has strings attached, so be open and air out any expectations.

2. HOW MANY GUESTS?

Your guest list can make or break your budget, so try to get a rough idea early on. More people means more food, more seating, and more costs. Start with your must-haves and build from there.

3. SET A WEDDING BUDGET BEFORE YOU START SHOPPING

It’s easy to fall in love with venues and dresses before realising they’re way out of reach. Set a budget first, then make decisions that fit within it; it’s all about balancing dream and reality.

4.

BEWARE OF

HIDDEN WEDDING COSTS

Things like corkage charges, dress alterations, and cake cutting fees can sneak up on you. Always read the fine print and leave a little wiggle room in your budget for those unexpected extras.

5. STAY ORGANISED AND TRACK YOUR WEDDING EXPENSES

A simple spreadsheet or budgeting app can make a huge difference. Keeping track as you go helps you spot overspending early and keeps your stress levels low.

Why do brides carry flowers?

It’s a tradition as ancient as the ceremony itself. Brides in ancient Greece, Rome, and Egypt clutched herbs like dill and garlic. Not exactly bridal chic, but these aromatic bundles symbolised fertility, new beginnings, and even protected against evil spirits (and maybe a meddling mother-in-law or two!).

The

‘fresh’

truth about June weddings

June has long been the most popular month to tie the knot. Why? Because it followed the annual “May bath”—yes, an annual tradition—when everyone was freshly scrubbed. Bouquets packed with fragrant blooms helped keep things smelling sweet, even as that freshness faded.

From garlic to garden roses

As bathing became more frequent and tastes evolved, herbs gave way to flowers with softer looks and sweeter meanings. Then the Victorian era arrived and “language of flowers” (also known as floriography) transformed bouquets into coded love letters. Think roses for romance, lilies for purity, and ivy for loyalty.

Your bouquet, your story

Today’s bouquets are a blend of beauty, tradition, and personal flair. Whether it’s a dreamy cascade of orchids or a bunch of wildflowers, your flowers speak volumes and now serve as a personal reflection.

So, when you walk down the aisle, know this: that bouquet in your hands is more than just pretty… it’s a piece of history, a good luck charm, and a love letter all in one.

Petals of the past Veil tales

More than just a pretty piece of tulle

Floaty, flirty, and utterly iconic - the wedding veil is the ultimate bridal accessory. But beneath all that gossamer glam lies a backstory filled with ancient secrets, superstitions, and serious symbolism.

Spirits, spells and secret glances

Back in Roman times, brides weren’t just walking down the aisle - they were dodging jealous spirits! Enter the veil: a protective shield meant to ward off bad vibes and envious eyes. In ancient Greece and the Middle East, veils added layers of modesty, mystery, and meaning.

Virtue and drama

Fast forward to medieval Europe and the age of knights and castles, and veils took on new meaning. They were all about virtue, reverence, and the awaited reveal. In arranged marriages, the veil stayed put until the "I do’s" were done - no sneak peeks allowed.

Today’s interpretation

The veil today is totally optional. From sweeping cathedral veils worthy of royal romance to sassy birdcage styles with vintage edge, the veil is now a personal style moment. It's tradition with your own twist.

While trends may come and go, the veil is that floaty little thread connecting generations of brides.

Amuri Estate

LEAVE THE STRESS BEHIND YOU

128 MEDWAY ROAD, HANMER SPRINGS 7334

Tucked away just outside Hanmer Springs and only an hour and a half from Christchurch, Amuri Estate is one of those places that feels like it was made for weddings.

With its sweeping mountain views, peaceful olive grove, and relaxed countryside setting, it’s the kind of spot where big moments feel even more special.

Couples looking to tie the knot here are treated to more than just stunning scenery. Amuri Estate offers a purpose-built wedding venue that manages to strike the perfect balance between style and comfort. Think polished concrete floors, soft wood tones, and big glass doors that open out to panoramic views of the Southern Alps. Whether you’re planning something low-key or inviting a big crowd, the space is versatile and welcoming.

Ceremonies at Amuri Estate are just as beautiful. Many couples choose to say “I do” outside, under the custom-built archway with the mountains as a backdrop. But for those after a winter wedding or a reliable indoor option, there’s a cosy space inside with a huge picture window that keeps the scenery front and centre, without having to worry about the weather.

One of the real highlights here is the accommodation. The Lodge, set on the same property, offers three modern and stylish guest rooms. There’s a shared kitchen, a warm and inviting living space, and even a double-sided fireplace to enjoy with a glass of wine at the end of the night. For couples who want a bit more privacy, there’s also the Wallace Peak Cottage. It’s tucked into the olive grove and has incredible views across the Waiau River and surrounding ranges, a perfect little hideaway for newlyweds.

Beyond the setting and facilities, what makes Amuri Estate special is how personal everything feels. The team is small, friendly, and hands-on. They genuinely care about making sure each couple has the day they’ve imagined, and they’re happy to help with planning or connect you with great local vendors.

It’s easy to see why Amuri Estate has become such a popular choice for South Island weddings. It’s private and peaceful, but still close enough to Hanmer Springs that guests can explore the village, relax in the hot pools, or grab a coffee the morning after. Whether you’re planning a big celebration or an intimate elopement, Amuri Estate offers a relaxed, romantic setting where the views are breathtaking, the vibe is easy-going, and the memories last a lifetime.

Love on a budget

Weddings are more than a celebration; they are the beginning of a new chapter. But between the flower arrangements, venue choices, and the perfect dress, it is easy for costs to spiral out of control before you have even sent out the invitations.

The good news? Planning a wedding on a budget does not mean compromising on beauty or meaning. Some of the most unforgettable weddings are the ones that swap out extravagance for intimacy, small details and perfection for presence.

Start with the heart, not numbers

Before you even look at a spreadsheet, sit down with your partner and envision what is most important to both of you for your big day. What matters most to you both? Is it a big dance floor filled with all of your favourite people, or an intimate ceremony in a small church? Are you leaning more towards an outdoor dinner lit with lights, or an all-inclusive set up that takes the pressure off?

When you are sure of your shared priorities, it becomes much easier to allocate your budget in a way that reflects what you value, rather than getting caught up in what weddings should look like.

Set a realistic budget – and stick to it

Once you have figured out your non-negotiables, take a realistic look at your finances. What can you comfortably spend without putting stress on your new life together? It might feel like a tough conversation, but it is also an important one. Starting your marriage off on the same page financially is a gift in itself.

Break the total number down into categories: venue, food, flowers, attire, photography and so on. It is good to know most couples overspend on the things guests might not even notice, so focus instead on the feeling of the day, that’s what you and everyone involved will remember.

Rethink the venue

A traditional wedding venue can eat up a big chunk of your budget, so think outside the ballroom. A family’s backyard, a local park, or even your favourite café that matches your aesthetic with the right touches. Plus, unconventional venues can come with fewer rules and more charm.

Trim the guest list

Yes – it’s is a hard task. But fewer guests can mean more intimate moments. A smaller guest list allows you to spend more time with the people who are most important to you and creates a more meaningful experience. Think of it as choosing quality over quantity. At the start of your new life together, you don’t need a crowd to feel complete or special.

DIY where it matters

You don’t need a team of stylists to make your wedding beautiful. Homemade centrepieces, handwritten place cards, or a curated playlist rather than a DJ or band can add that personal touch that no amount of money can buy. Get crafty with your partner, invite friends to help, and turn the process into a time to remember itself.

Let love lead

At the end of the day, it is important to remember that the point of a wedding isn’t to impress – it is to express. It's all about starting a new life with your favourite person, surrounded by people who love you. Keep that thought at the heart of every decision you make, and your day will be perfect, no matter the budget.

So take a deep breath, talk with your partner and plan with excitement. Your wedding shouldn’t be about the money you spend – it should be about celebrating the love you share, and that is priceless.

Capturing moments you can’t recreate

You’ve booked the venue, chosen the dress, finalised the guest list, and now you’re scrolling through budget spreadsheets wondering where to save a few dollars.

It’s tempting to think a friend with a decent camera or a cheaper option might suffice for your wedding photos. But when it comes to preserving the memories of one of the most important days of your life, this is one area where you really don’t want to cut corners.

Your wedding happens once. There are no do-overs, no retakes, and no way to rewind the moment your partner first sees you at the end of the aisle. A quality wedding photographer doesn’t just take pictures; they capture emotion, energy, and the story of your day in a way that you’ll return to for decades. And because you only get one opportunity to photograph these moments, hiring someone with experience and a proven eye is essential.

Find your style match

Photography, like any form of art, is deeply personal. Some photographers lean towards a classic, timeless aesthetic with posed shots and formal compositions. Others are known for a candid, documentary-style approach, quietly capturing natural moments as they unfold. Then there are those with a modern, editorial edge-stylised, creative, and bold.

Before you commit, take time to look through portfolios. You’ll quickly get a sense of whether a photographer’s style matches your vision. Pay attention to consistency. Do their images feel cohesive? Are the colours, lighting, and compositions what you’d want for your own memories? Think about your venue, the season, and whether their aesthetic would enhance or clash with the setting.

More than just the lens

Your photographer will be one of the people you spend the most time with on your wedding day. That means their personality matters, a lot. Ideally, they’re someone who makes you feel at ease, understands your quirks, and can handle the natural chaos of the day with calm professionalism.

During your first meeting, don’t just ask about their experience, pay attention to how they listen. Do they seem genuinely excited about your plans? Do they put you at ease? Your photographer should feel like a trusted guide, someone who gets your vision and can execute it without making the process feel stiff or awkward.

This connection translates directly into how comfortable you’ll feel in front of the camera. The more relaxed you are, the more natural your photos will look. If you’re camera-shy or worried about “posing,” a good photographer will know how to draw out your best, most authentic selves.

It’s not just about price

Yes, weddings can be expensive. And yes, it’s natural to want to save where you can. But choosing a photographer based on price alone is risky. A lower fee may mean fewer years of experience, limited equipment, or a lack of backup planning.

That doesn’t mean the most expensive option is automatically the best, either. What matters is value. Look closely at what’s included in their packages. How many hours are covered? Are there second shooters? Will you get an engagement shoot, a wedding album, or digital files? Do they handle post-production professionally?

Trust your gut

At the end of the day, choosing a wedding photographer isn’t just a logical decision—it’s a gut one. After doing your research, narrowing down your options, and meeting a few potential photographers, ask yourself: who felt right? Who listened, who understood your vision, and who made you feel excited about the result?

So if you’re wondering where to save and where to spend, remember this: you only get one wedding day. Make sure it’s captured the way it deserves to be.

Picking the perfect place

Understanding accommodation options

Planning a wedding is no small feat. Between picking the perfect dress, choosing your dream venue, organising the food, drink and entertainment, it's easy to overlook a crucial detail: where your guests will stay.

Getting the accommodation right can make a massive difference, to the point where it could define the experience for guests. Choosing the right place to stay is integral to creating a seamless, stress-free experience that allows people to just soak up the atmosphere and immerse themselves in your special day.

Resorts: If your wedding dreams involve poolside lounging and dancing under the stars without ever leaving the property, then a resort might just be your bridal soulmate.

Resorts are ideal all-in-one solutions, offering comprehensive packages that allow you and your guests to stay, play, and celebrate without needing to call a cab.

Whether it’s a chic beachfront escape or a luxurious mountain hideaway, resorts come in all shapes and star ratings. Think stress-free logistics, endless amenities, and that vacation vibe that makes everything feel extra magical.

Hotels: Hotels are the classic ‘go-to’ for good reason. With options ranging from charming boutique inns to posh five-star high-rises, hotels offer both comfort and convenience.

You can choose a hotel with a style that complements your theme, be it vintage glam, modern elegance, or garden chic. Many hotels will help arrange room blocks and include extras like breakfasts, welcome cocktails, or late checkouts.

B&Bs: If you’re planning a smaller affair or leaning into a rustic, romantic vibe, a bed and breakfast could be just the ticket. Many B&Bs are nestled in picturesque settings, so they deliver a home-like experience akin to a warm hug.

Rental homes: For guests arriving as couples, families, or groups, the rental home is an ideal choice. From chic city lofts to countryside villas, private homes offer space, privacy, and often a better bang for your buck, especially for larger groups.

Things to consider

Allocating accommodation: Not all guests have the same needs. Being intentional with where your guests stay shows that their comfort matters and you’re genuinely thinking of them.

Communication is key: Once you’ve locked in your accommodation options, it’s time to spread the word. Whether it’s via your wedding website, invitation inserts, or a stylish digital guide, make sure they have all the info, such as booking links, amenities, check-in times, and any special rates you've snagged.

Who pays for what: Traditionally, guests cover their travel and lodging, but modern weddings play by their own rules. Couples sometimes offer to cover accommodations for parents, bridal party members or long-distance loved ones. You need to set your boundaries early, be clear in your communication, and ensure your budget covers whatever choice you make.

Welcome bags: If you want to wow your guests, then the magic is in the details. Welcome bags with local treats or a handwritten note go a long way. It’s the cherry on top of a perfect weekend.

At the end of the day, your guests are showing up to celebrate your love story. One of the easiest ways to show how much you appreciate this is by ensuring they’re staying in suitable accommodation, because, as we all know, a little love goes a long way.
