THERE IS A SAYING IN LIFE THAT IF IT IS TO BE IT’S UP TO ME

husband and I have a little Jack Russell that we rehomed and called Bluey – he is also our child. I love spending weekends at our beach place in Kerikeri, shooting, fishing, swimming, cookin and eating. I love good wine and food. In our family you don’t just eat good food you have to talk about it too. I never look backwards, only forwards and although my lists are long, I always seem to achieve everything I need to in life. In our offi we have a quote – ‘we will achieve everything we need to achieve today” it keeps us sane.

Llisten as the world thunders and storms around us, causing so much environmental stress and concern, political nightmares, and even a war going on - what could be worse! We are all getting drawn into the negativity and a politically driven environment. We watch as banks make billions of dollars in profits and families cannot feed their children. It has become such an unbalanced world. The reality is if you want a good, content, and happy life: it is up to you! Surround yourself with positive people and celebrate the little things in life. It’s up to you to bring motivation, love, and energy into your life. No matter your situation you can do this and create a better environment of happiness for you and your loved ones. Do small things to help the world. Maybe this summer make a garden and grow some vegetables and flowers. Stop wasting so much and reuse, reuse, reuse. It’s not hard once you practise.

A little about Eye magazine: We launched in 1996 in Parnell, which makes us 23 years old! We have since become a nationwide title with a small global distribution. Eye magazine has a large online readership but still has consistent printed magazines read by a luxury audience.

MATISSE COVER SHOOT BY EYE MAGAZINE

Behind the cover

When it comes to shooting a magazine cover, everything has to be in place - the model, the location, the showcase. For this summer edition of Eye, we wanted to do something different - a wrap around cover. So we teamed up with Matisse NZ, who wanted to showcase the Camaleonda® Sofa designed by Mario Bellini manufactured by B&B Italia exclusive to Matisse.

The Camaleonda is a modern icon and B&B Italia’s most innovative advancements have allowed the sofa to be updated with the latest technology to make the masterpiece even more spectacular.

“Of all the objects I have designed, Camaleonda is perhaps the best in terms of its sense of freedom. There are an infinite number of possible configurations.” - Mario Bellini. You can visit the Matisse Showroom in Parnell to experience the endless possibilities of Camaleonda for yourself.

Our model for the shoot was Angela Stone, no stranger to the cover of EYE and she was dressed by the incredible Mera Silk. The Mera aesthetic embodies an effortless femininity and flattering style, their range is practical, yet beautifully designed garments for the modern woman.

And of course a cover shoot would be nothing without the team behind the camera - our hair and makeup artist Angela Crumpe made Angela look effortlessly chic and glamorous and our photographer Norrie Montgomery is our go-to - his eye is unrivalled.

NEW ZEALAND’S QUEEN OF PROPERTY AND BEST SELLING AUTHOR NIKKI CONNORS SHARES HER EXPERTISE ON HOW TO INVEST AND THRIVE IN TODAYS CHALLENGING REAL ESTATE MARKET.

Her life journey and her rise to success resonated with so many New Zealanders. She received letters, emails and cards from men and women going through similar experiences and just wanted someone to listen and who understood their frustrations at having to start again. This was also when the media dubbed her the Queen of Property in New Zealand. And the title has stuck.

DEATH AND TAXES…. YOU CAN RELY ON BOTH

Fast forward 6 years...which saw the death of her beloved sister just after her book tour, the pandemic with all of her 4 businesses fighting for survival, her struggle with the IRD and being targeted and bullied by a rival. Sadly two of her subsidiary companies were put into liquidation. ‘They went from million dollar turnovers pre pandemic to being propped up by Propellor in 2022’.

She is saddened yet pragmatic about this development. Nikki recognises these companies are just two of the thousands of kiwi business that have been liquidated every year through the ramifications of Covid which could have been avoided if the NZ govt had chosen to do what the Australian, UK and US govt did to ensure businesses survived through those difficult times.

But she is still here and Propellor continues to be a strong and important force in the property investment industry.

‘It was certainly my annus horribilis” Nikki says ‘But I have been so lucky with the ongoing support of my clients, staff and family. Nearly half of Propellor’s business is with existing clients or their referrals’ which helped them through the GFC, two earthquakes, covid and more recently the changes in bank lending criteria.

The last 6 years haven’t always been difficult. In 2016 She was a finalist in The Next Magazine ‘Business Woman of the Year’ Awards, short listed for the Westpac ‘2020 Woman of Influence’ Awards and more recently voted as one of the top 25 businesswomen in New Zealand by Eye Magazine. Through the pandemic Nikki galvanised her team into action and provided a support help line and information booklets for home owners, property investors and tenants to help them get through the issues surrounding the loss of income and the pressures of the banks around maintaining mortgage and rent payments.

Last Year Nikki also funded and ran a 3 month mentoring programme for entrepreneurial women in Auckland. “I had the most amazing women come from as far as Nelson for a weekend every month for 3 months to be part of this. I called other successful businesswomen in my personal sphere to give up their weekends to come and talk about setting up a business from a legal perspective, putting together a business plan, branding, marketing and even mental wellbeing”.

Her Woman and Wealth lunches held in Auckland were also a resounding success – being sold out each time.

‘I was hoping to take these lunches around the country but another lock down meant that I have to look to next year to fulfil that dream – of helping women to look at their lives and their security in a different way.

When Nikki started Propellor Property Investments it was in response to requests from those around her who saw how her way of investing in property was making her wealthy.

‘Firstly it’s important to recognise that investing in property is a business. So it’s vital that you know what you need to achieve – to set goals – and have an exit strategy. That’s what we do for our clients. Then we present the right property to meet their needs.

In the 14 years that Propellor has been operating Nikki and her team have helped hundreds of New Zealanders achieve those goals – whether paying off their home mortgage in record time, enjoying a significant passive income or simply having a lump sum for that boat.

THE QUEEN OF PROPERTY IN NEW ZEALAND STILL BELIEVES THAT PROPERTY IS THE KING OF INVESTMENTS

With rising interest rates, it’s almost impossible to pay down most home mortgages in less than 20 to 30 years… that’s a lifelong debt! Property in New Zealand has doubled every 10 years –so an investment property purchased today could give you a significant, tax free profit over the next 5 to 10 years …to help pay off your mortgage or have cash for the future. The cost of building new properties is showing nearly 21% increase per year …so new builds cannot get cheaper. There are over 180,000 fast track immigration applicants at the moment who will need housing. The chronic shortage of social housing is getting worse… and Rentals are predicted to rise significantly as the shortage of rental properties continues to grow.

THE FACT IS THAT PROPERTY REMAINS AN IMPORTANT PART OF ANY WEALTH BUILDING STRATEGY….

Here’s a Propellor client experience … Jane and Gary (not their real names) are both 50. They have a $500,000 mortgage. They pay nearly $3500 per month…and at this rate they will be 70 by the time they clear the debt and would have paid over $300,000 in interest costs. But they purchased one investment property through propellor 7 years ago…it now has over $500,000 in potential capital gain. Our advice was to sell it and take the tax free profit and pay off the home to save 20 years of mortgage payments and hundreds of thousands of dollars in interest….

Earlier this year Nikki made the decision to simplify her life and focus on her core business.‘Working 7 days a week does not make for a balanced live/work life’ but she is determined to get back on track after such a difficult time. Luckily I have property – and property can be used to fund projects, pay bills and secure businesses. She still divides her time between her homes in Auckland and Christchurch so that she can give her clients the personalised service they deserve.

Her small team of professionals meet with her regularly to discuss and create individual solutions and strategies for Propellor Clients. Despite this gruelling schedule she still has her finger on the pulse of the New Zealand Property market and her predictions have always seemed to be correct.

‘Investment property can be a great buffer… no matter what life throws at you… Whether it’s paying off your mortgage faster, topping up your income… or paying off your taxes.

I won’t stop till every New Zealander can retire mortgage free’.

And that’s why she deserves the title of ‘Queen’!

DIAMOND PERSONALITIES

WEARING A DIAMOND ON YOUR FINGER IS LIKE OWNING YOUR OWN PERSONAL RAINBOW WHICH REFLECTS YOUR PERSONALITY.

There are a multitude of special shapes which bring out the fire and brilliance of a diamond. Some say they reflect your character… Which type of diamond personality are you? Kirstin O’Brien of TORY & KO. Jewellers shares her insights into diamond shapes and their sparkling personalities….

CUSHION CUT

Romantic, Feminine, Dazzling

The beautiful Cushion cut is an antique style that looks like a cross between an Old Mine Cut (a deep cut with large facets that was common in the late 19th and the early 20th centuries) and a modern oval cut. It sits like a well-stuffed cushion and adds volume to a setting of your choice. The wearer has a love of romance, is feminine and has a sparkle that matches this diamond perfectly.

EMERALD CUT

Sophisticated, Elegant, Powerful Emerald cut diamonds offer a mirror-like 1920’s elegance. This rectangular shape diamond has less facets and features cut corners. It is known as a step cut because it has long mirror-edge like concentric cuts which resemble stair steps. Less flashy, there is something understated and mesmerising about this cut of diamond which shows an innate sense of self…

PRINCESS CUT

Outgoing, Fun, Flirtatious

The super-sparkly square Princess cut is closest in sparkle to a Round Brilliant but with a sharper look. It is best practice to set a Princess cut diamond with corner claws to protect the corners of the stone - this also gives a slight illusion of making the diamond look even bigger. These diamonds offer a lot of sparkle so you know who you are dealing with when you see a Princess cut diamond on someone’s finger!

MARQUISE CUT

Creative, Theatrical, Luxury For something a little more exotic, take a look at a Marquise. An elongated shape with pointed ends inspired by the fetching smile of the Marquise de Pompadour and commissioned by the Sun King, France’s Louis XIV. It is gorgeous when used as a solitaire or when enhanced by smaller diamonds. The wearer of a Marquise shows off their personality with this cut of diamond.

OVAL CUT

Daring, Larger-than-life, Individual Oval cut diamonds show a lot of volume and allow for some exciting wedding ring designs to compliment their rounded shapes. Make sure you get expert advise from your gemologist/jeweller as the cut and proportions of these beautiful diamonds need to be excellent in order to avoid the “bow tie” effect. An oval cut suggests the wearer likes something bold and unconventional yet is still sophisticated with a creative flair.

RADIANT CUT

Fun, Confident, Romantic Combining the shape of the emerald cut with the brilliance of the round cut, the Radiant cut sparkles intensely with its 70 facets exuding refraction and light. Set in a three stone setting the Radiant cut is a real showstopper! There is a strength and intensity of sparkle in this diamond cut which shows the energy and spirit of its wearer.

ASSCHER CUT

Glamorous, Vintage, Regal

The square lines of the Asscher cut, along with the deep step cut lines give a royal and vintage vibe, along with a beautiful sense of style. This shape diamond works well with accent diamonds to add even more glamour. It has an understated, yet intoxicating sparkle which reflects the dichotomy of the personality that wears it.

ROUND BRILLIANT CUT

Traditional, Elegant, Faithful

The traditional and every-popular Round Brilliant cut diamond offers maximum sparkle and has been calibrated with 58 facets which offer fire and brilliance like no other. This diamond is perfect for a solitaire with a simple claw setting or can be set into a more intricate setting - the possibilities are endless.

HEART CUT

Dreamy, Sentimental, Romantic

The Heart shaped diamond is more commonly used in pendants and earrings, but is often used as accents around another stone in a ring design to add whimsy and romance in a more subtle fashion. The most romantic of all, a heart shaped diamond speaks volumes of eternal love.

PEAR CUT

Tasteful, Joyful, Open

Pear cuts are for those who like a juxtaposition of round and point - they are romantic and suit a claw or halo setting. They look great on a long finger and make a stylish pairing with a “tiara style” or “V” shaped ring to accompany their beautiful shape. There is a distinctive and impressive personality with a pear cut diamond, reflecting the wearer’s considerate nature and sense of style.

There is a diamond shape out there for most lovers and also a variety of colours: white, yellow, green, pink, black, chocolate, cognac and champagne to satisfy everyone’s tastes. You only have to decide which shape you like and what size to fit your budget. That’s where having a gemologist assist you with your selection is an added bonus: you can view different stones and assess cuts and colours, clarity and carat weightselecting your perfect diamond as the starting point for your Dream Ring. Your jeweller can design around your diamond choice, including colour of fine metals, style & accent diamonds - these are all things that make your ring truely unique.

BEAUTY

FROM PLASTIC TO PERFECT

IN THE WAKE OF THE 90’S, PLASTIC SURGEONS ARE NOW DEALING WITH THE FALL -OUT OF THE BREAST SURGERY BOOM THAT HAS BROUGHT RISKS, COMPLICATIONS AND EXPIRATION DATES TO MANY UNAWARE PATIENTS.

It’s a delicate subject as many women have had successful breast augmentation surgery but many don’t like to admit their breasts aren’t real. So, advances in fat grafting mastopexy, have given women hope of safer, enhanced, beautiful breasts.

Meet Tristan de Chalain. One of New Zealand’s most experienced surgeons, Tristan is highly trained in reconstructive & cosmetic plastic surgery, having had more than 20 years’ experience & the recipient of numerous awards. De Chalain is able to handle everything from complex facial restoration to skin cancer treatment and provides free reconstructive treatment to underprivileged children.

But his recent passion is in fact this latest offering to women: a solution for those looking for personal or professional confidence that is both discreet and uses their own fat to shape natural looking breasts.

We speak with Tristan about this procedure and the advances in grafting fat for breast enhancement.

Let’s get right into the thick of things, can fat grafting deliver the same results as implants?

To be frank, no. Autologous fat, (meaning from your own body) is best used to help shape a reconstructed breast or to add modest areas of contour improvement, such as helping to fill the flattened upper pole of the breast after childbirth, or augmenting the decolletage. Even using the most advanced techniques, little more volume than a single cup size enhancement can be gained by fat injection alone.

With these latest advances in fat grafting, is it a reliable result?

Fat grafting has been around for at least two decades and it has certainly been shown to be safe and reliable. Of the

fat injected about 60% will survive and persist, so more than one treatment may be beneficial. The fat that does survive however is there for at least 10 years, if not for life!

What are the most common risks with implants?

Implant’s age and can rupture. Each implant is recognized as a foreign body by the patient’s tissues and the implant is covered by a layer of scar tissue, called a capsule. This capsule can contract over time and distort the breast and may in very rare instances, cause a white blood cell cancer called an Anaplastic large Cell Lymphoma to develop.

Implants can also rupture and there are a small number of women who maintain that their breast implants have made them ill, with symptoms ranging from joint pain and malaise to brain fog. It must be stressed however, that the vast majority of patients who have breast implants, have a trouble free, positive experience.

Can the fat grafted and injected into the breast pocket, be absorbed or lose volume and change the initial result?

The fat should be injected either into the underlying muscle, or into the subcutaneous space and not into the breast tissue itself. It is never injected into an empty space as each fat cell requires nourishment drawn from intimate contact with well-vascularized local tissues.

Is this a procedure that has to be repeated?

Ideally, and depending on the goals of treatment, yes. For larger volume augmentations, two or three rounds of fat transfer may be needed.

If a patient is happy with the result but wants to go bigger, can they ‘add’ to the initial surgery?

Yes, providing they have donor fat to spare and this can be ascertained during your initial consultation.

In comparison to implants what is the ‘life’ of this procedure and when would you need it redone?

The surviving fat cells, after injection, are there more or less permanently. Changes in overall weight will be reflected in the volume of the fat graft.

Can this procedure be added to a breast lift?

Yes indeed. This is one of the commonest uses, especially after removal of breast implants for whatever reason. Likewise, it is a very useful adjunct to breast reconstruction after mastectomy.

So many women are afraid to seek advice or admit they would love to have bigger or firmer breasts and not only that, every woman has heard a scary story about this surgical procedure and that is why Tristan De Chalain, a trusted and experienced Plastic Surgeon, is encouraging women who want to boost their personal and professional confidence, to explore the options with respect to breast restoration and enhancement.

Speak to the friendly and discreet team at Auckland Plastic Surgery via phone or online via their website, and see if this could be the answer to your dreams or helping you remove your old implants without losing the aesthetic benefits,

MAKING A BREAST OF IT

Visage Plastic Surgery

Plastic surgery is one thing, but having the eye of an artist is quite another, and Dr Katarzyna Mackenzie has precisely this combination of skills as an active appreciator of fine arts, and a painter in her own right. The finesse and fine motor skills required for the delicate plastic surgery she performs, as well as her vision, and understanding of the future appearance of a healed surgery sets her apart as a plastic surgeon.

Dr Mackenzie is one of just a handful of female plastic surgeons in the country, and one of only four plastic surgeons ever awarded a PhD in New Zealand. She runs Visage Plastic Surgery, a private surgical practice in Auckland. Her clients access a wide range of surgical procedures, but some aesthetic plastic surgery is particularly sought after. Dr Mackenzie has developed a well-respected reputation for distinctively fine breast augmentation, reduction, and lift, as well as abdominoplasty, upper eyelid surgery, and labiaplasty. She also enjoys, and specialises in very fine hand-surgery, and frequently also performs skin-cancer surgery and reconstruction. Her approachability and warmth are encouraging. Eye was particularly interested in learning about the aesthetic breast surgery she performs.

MASTOPEXY (BREAST UPLIFT)

Dr Mackenzie says, “Mastopexy makes the breast more shapely, firmer, and better supported, as well as bringing the nipple back to the position it was at in more youthful days without changing the breast size. That lends itself to more physical confidence in the patient. Mastopexy restores feminine proportions, and bras and swimsuits fit more comfortably and attractively.

“Women who benefit most from mastopexy are those with drooping breasts caused by weight loss, pregnancy, or ageing, and also those whose breasts are asymmetrical.”

It is common for women to make the decision to undergo mastopexy as a single procedure, but sometimes this surgery is performed in combination with breast augmentation.

Surgery is carried out under general anaesthetic and the patient is normally able to return to work in 2-3 weeks. You’ll need a sports bra day and night for six weeks, and to sleep on your back for the first few weeks following surgery. Swelling and bruising normally disappears between four and six weeks.

The final aesthetic result will not be fully seen for three to six months, so you’ll need a little patience and trust in the process.

Any kind of surgery includes inherent risk and Dr Mackenzie is frank about the possible risks of breast surgery.

If you write down the potential complications associated with breast surgery, the list looks scary, but Dr Mackenzie goes through them in detail with you. She says, “The bottom line is that every choice in breast surgery presents tradeoffs.”

“Patients should follow their surgeon’s advice to reduce risk; for example, no smoking (I don’t operate on smokers), and wearing a supportive bra to minimise breast implant movement.”

Smokers have high levels of carbon monoxide in their blood which inhibit healing and minimise the chances for aesthetic success. Even plastic surgeons who are willing to perform cosmetic surgery on smokers strongly advise that smoking stops for a minimum of a month before and after surgery to enable optimum healing of the very delicate skin and tissue of the breast.

Questions for your surgeon when considering Mastopexy

✓ Is your surgeon a specialist plastic surgeon and NOT a cosmetic surgeon? Most surgeons who call themselves cosmetic surgeons are NOT specialist plastic surgeons.

✓ Does the surgeon operate in an accredited facility? All specialist plastic surgeons do!

✓ What is the expected recovery time?

✓ Ask to see before and after photos so you can determine if you like the aesthetic outcomes a particular surgeon offers.

BREAST REDUCTION

Having large breasts such as a DD can make buying clothes difficult, cause a woman to be very self-conscious, and can cause back, shoulder and neck pain. The change for patients after breast reduction can be remarkable though. Patients are generally able to sit and stand taller, and their posture is better, and for many, they’re now able to exercise which their previously uncomfortable bodies made difficult.

“Smaller, aesthetically shaped, pert breasts are usually the main goal of breast reduction surgery,” says Dr Mackenzie, “but it is important that long term, the surgery also improves the patient’s physiological and physical wellbeing. There’s no question that breast reduction is most often a lifechanging procedure, and in general is well tolerated.”

Most patients undergoing breast reduction, she says, will only be on Paracetamol and Ibuprofen by the fourth day following surgery. Swelling is normal for a few weeks and up to two or three months depending on the size of the breasts. Some patients experience shooting pains as the nerves recover, and sometimes the sensation of pullingcaused by the suspension stitches used to shape the new breast. Dr Mackenzie recommends a minimum of two weeks, and ideally three weeks off work, depending on the type of work her patient does.

Surgery is under general anaesthetic. You should be prepared to wait for two to three weeks before returning to work. For healing you will need to wear a sports bra day and night for a minimum six weeks. You’ll also need to sleep on your back, and engage your mighty patience for the final result of surgery which will take up to six months. Unless you fall pregnant or have significant weight gain, or loss, a breast reduction will last for a long time.

✓ Will I be able to have mammograms?

✓ What are the possible complications, and how will these be addressed if they occur?

BREAST AUGMENTATION EVER IN DEMAND

Dr Mackenzie says breast augmentation is the most common cosmetic surgical procedure worldwide – 15.8% of all cosmetic procedures.

“I am a member of ISAPS,” she said, “the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS), the world’s leading professional body for board-certified aesthetic plastic surgeons, and it’s the leading global authority on aesthetic and cosmetic surgery. In their latest survey, ISAPS examined the number and types of aesthetic procedures performed around the world in 2020. The data was especially significant because it looked at the impact of COVID-19 on plastic surgeons globally as well as highlighting worldwide trends and regional variations.

“Despite a 3.6% decrease in the number of procedures in 2020, breast augmentation remained the most common. However, the decrease in breast augmentation procedures was notable compared to 2019 for example, especially considering the 20.6% increase over the previous five years. In 2019 surgery to remove breast implants increased by 10.7%. Although New Zealand doesn’t have a national database, we tend to follow international trends.”

BREAST AUGMENTATION

Women commonly seek breast augmentation when they have naturally small breasts, or when breast shapes or sizes are unequal, or if they have suffered significant volume change in their breasts through weight loss, pregnancy, breast-feeding, or ageing.

“As women age,” Dr Mackenzie says, “the production of collagen in our skin reduces, often making our lovely skins slack. If as a younger woman you opted for breast implants, you may find as collagen depletes that your breasts are liable to sag as a combined result of ageing and the added weight of breast implants.

Breast augmentation is performed under general anaesthesia. Dr Mackenzie says it is not a technically demanding procedure in the hands of a specialist plastic surgeon, providing patients are good candidates for primary breast augmentation. “The operation involves making an incision in the breast crease,” she says, “and creating a pocket under the breast tissue either in front of or behind the pectoral muscle.

“I AM A MEMBER OF ISAPS, THE INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY OF AESTHETIC PLASTIC SURGERY (ISAPS), THE WORLD’S LEADING PROFESSIONAL BODY FOR BOARD-CERTIFIED AESTHETIC PLASTIC SURGEONS, AND IT’S THE LEADING GLOBAL AUTHORITY ON AESTHETIC AND COSMETIC SURGERY.”

Bleeding points are sealed, breast implant sizers utilised, and then the final breast implant selected and inserted into the pocket using a touch-free technique. The incision is closed with dissolving sutures and the wounds are covered with surgical tape.”

In breast augmentation risks are reduced by making the best surgical and breast implant choices, based on good team decisions. Good team decisions start with wellinformed patients and technically-prepared surgeons.

Extra questions for your surgeon when considering breast implants

✓ Am I a good candidate for breast augmentation?

✓ What are the options for breast augmentation (implants versus fat transfer)?

✓ What size of breast implants is recommended and why?

✓ What type of breast implants does the surgeon use?

✓ What is the life expectancy of these breast implants?

✓ Will it be safe to undergo mammograms with these breast implants?

✓ How do breast implants affect the skin with time?

Why some women choose to remove their breast implants

The beautiful breasts which helped lift our self-esteem when they were augmented are sometimes not the shape or size we want anymore. As we age, we realise these alluring feminine charms are not 100% necessary to attracting the perfect partner, or sometimes we develop health issues which have us considering our options, or we simply have different appearance objectives now.

Modern breast implants are designed to last for a minimum of ten years. Beyond this period the risk of rupture increases by one percent each year, so the older your breast implants, the greater the risk of rupture or other complications.

Dr Mackenzie says, “Sometimes women re-evaluate the size of their breast implant and choose revisional surgery which allows them smaller implants in keeping with their natural overall matured form. Many women take the opportunity when making breast implant changes or removals to combine the procedure with a breast lift or fat transfer.”

“Breast Explantation (breast implant removal) is an appropriate option as long as it is what the patient wants for herself, and the surgery can be performed safely. Do your research and choose a specialist plastic surgeon that has specific interest and experience with breast surgery, including breast implant removal.”

Women making choices about their own bodies and wellbeing

“Of course”, she says, “it all depends on the client! Every person is different and has different needs which our consultation helps bring out. I believe the goal when seeking plastic surgery is to have the correct surgery with the right surgeon.”

As a married mother of two Dr Mackenzie is familiar with the female psyche and physiology and wants her patients to be as informed as they possibly can be so they are empowered to make their own choices.

It would be difficult perhaps to find another female surgeon with her aesthetic and ethical values, especially combined with her extraordinary training. She was the senior microsurgery and breast reconstruction fellow, and then hand surgery BSSH fellow (British Society for the Surgery of Hand) at St Andrew’s Centre, Chelmsford, UK, a centre recognised internationally for microsurgical breast reconstruction and hand surgery. Dr Mackenzie won the prestigious microsurgery and breast reconstruction fellowship at The Royal Marsden Hospital in London. The Royal Marsden is the largest and most comprehensive cancer centre in Europe and has an international reputation for groundbreaking research and the pioneering of cutting edge cancer treatments and technologies, as well as specialising in cancer diagnosis.

Having trained with many pioneering minds in aesthetic surgery in London, she gained a world leading aesthetic surgery fellowship at top London private hospitals and acquired invaluable experience in every aspect of contemporary aesthetic surgery. In Canada Dr Mackenzie honed skills and broadened her knowledge in aesthetic breast surgery alongside Dr Elizabeth Hall-Findlay, whose contributions to breast surgery are recognised around the world as the ‘Hall-Findlay’ technique.

Raised in Poland, Dr Mackenzie earned her medical doctor’s degree (MD) from the Medical University of Warsaw. In 2003 she moved with her Kiwi husband to New Zealand and trained in plastic surgery in Auckland and Christchurch. She was awarded a PhD by the University of Otago in 2010. More titles, fellowships, and professional memberships have followed, but in the longer run, although we want someone who is highly qualified when it comes to cutting into our bodies, and in particular our beautiful breasts, we also want someone who genuinely understands, and who thrills to the opportunity to craft beauty with her skills.

As one of her clients told us, “Dr Katarzyna is lovely, and you get the whole story with her. Nothing is sugar-coated.”

RAAIE

THE ACTIVE SKINCARE BRAND HARNESSING THE TRANFORMATIVE POWER OF RESILIENT BOTANICALS.

A glow with healing and shielding properties, RAAIE is redefining botanical skincare by harnessing land, sea and alpine botanicals that survive in extreme environments.

Founded by Katey Mandy, each product combines science-backed, highly-effective active ingredients like vitamin C, hyaluronic acid and retinal with powerful, locally-grown plant antioxidants.

We sat down with the beauty powerhouse to find out more.

Tell us about the RAAIE brand, your inspiration and how it all started?

The brand is inspired by our complex relationship with the sun. On the one hand, we adore it, we worship its warmth and light. It’s good for our mood. It’s good for our immune systems. It’s good for our gut. It regulates melatonin, which regulates sleep, which regulates skin repair.

But on the other hand, it damages our skin and makes us look wrinkly and old (80% of extrinsic aging is caused by UV exposure). It’s like a toxic relationship with your ex; we know it’s damaging us, but we can’t stay away. This duality of our relationship with the sun really inspired the whole brand and notions of sun worship and cosmic deities are reflected in every part of RAAIE, from the logo to the campaign imagery and, of course, our pagan inspired symbols.

All our products are designed to help us get the benefit of the sun while minimising the harm. Our AM/PM treatment system reverses sun damage and protects against future damage with the resilient power of New Zealand botanicals that thrive in our harsh UV environment; backed by and the best of cosmeceutical science.

Tell us about incorporating NZ botanicals to your range, what is different about these ingredients compared to other skincare brands.

New Zealand botanicals are unique in that they survive –and even thrive - in our harsh UV environment. In response, they have developed a defensive mechanism: they generate higher levels of antioxidants. These antioxidants benefit our skin in the same way they benefit the plants, protecting against future damage and repairing damaged skin cells to promote healthy, clear, l uminous skin.

We combine our New Zealand botanicals with the latest in cutting edge cosmeceutical science. Ingredients like pro-grade vitamin A (retinaldehyde) and vitamin C (sodium ascorbyl phosphate), squalene, hyaluronic acid and vitamin B (niacinamide). For us, it’s about the best of both worlds: the finest natural ingredients backed up with the most effective scientific breakthroughs

What is your beauty routine & do you have any non-negotiables?

My non-negotiables are (of course) the Morning Dew Vitamin C Serum in the morning and the Moonbeam Retinal Elixir in the evening. We wanted to launch with two serums because serums are the products in your skincare routine that deliver the best results. They’re made up of smaller molecules that penetrate deep into your skin, delivering high concentrations of active ingredients where they are needed most.

When it comes to routine, because we’ve combined so many potent ingredients into our serums, I keep the other products around that pretty simple. So a good cleanser, the appropriate serum, then a ceramide moisturiser or oil afterwards to lock it all in. And if it is the morning, I’ll finish with a lightweight, mineral SPF. Once a week I do a glycolic peel as well to resurface the skin.

What is your best beauty tip going into summer?

Stay out of the sun! It causes 80% of visible ageing. But it’s a predicament even for me because honestly, what is life without the warmth of the sun on your face? We can’t live our lives in the shadows. So my version of that advice is to enjoy the sun but protect yourself. Wear a hat, use SPF and get yourself a punchy antioxidant serum to wear underneath your SPF. Because SPF protects you from burning but doesn’t protect you against all the free radicals that cause signs of aging like wrinkles, illness, pigmentation and uneven texture. The Morning Dew Vitamin C serum has double power antioxidant protection of 15% Vitamin C, as well as NZ botanical antioxidants that have learnt to survive in our harsh UV environment so delivers powerful botanical antioxidant protection.

We are very excited about the launch of our SPF in the next few months. I really wanted to launch with an SPF but was super fussy about the formula not being too thick, zincky or oily. The good news is that the extra time in the laboratory has paid off and we have a beautiful, lightweight, velvety mineral formula that’s almost ready for market. We also have many more products in the pipeline that we are super excited about, such as cleansers, moisturisers, and botanical oils.

“We are so fortunate to have access to a treasure trove of unique ingredients in New Zealand — some of which are only just being discovered,” Katey Mandy

What’s next for RAAIE Skincare?

Seriously, Who is Elijah?

As an independently owned fragrance house, who is Elijah dares to be different. Owner and founder Raquel Bouris created the Eau de parfum range after noticing a gap in the luxury parfum market, she wanted to create scents that blurred the lines of gender. We caught up with Raquel to find out more.

How did you come up with the idea?

I travelled to California in 2017 for Coachella. It was there that I was introduced to a very intoxicating fragrance oil. I became so obsessed with the scent that I tracked it down online and began wearing it around Bondi and Cronulla. Strangers began approaching me, constantly asking what fragrance I was wearing. Cue lightbulb idea!

What’s the story behind the name ‘Who is Elijah’?

Coming up with a name was the hardest part - however it has a funny backstory. I originally had a business partner, and he wanted to name the brand Raquel & Elijah. I wasn’t completely sold on the name but we continued to work on making a fragrance. A few months later, they decided not to move forward and we parted ways amicably. Plot twist, however, his name wasn’t even Elijah, he had just loved the name! So, one day I was trying to rattle my brain to come up with a new name and I just said, “who is Elijah?” and the name stuck.

What is your favourite scent?

I shouldn’t have favourites… but NOAMD!

What motivates you?

I am motivated by my team who work so incredibly hard, and I’m motivated by our customers who truly love our brand and creations.

What does the future hold for Who is Elijah?

We have big, global plans in store, we’re excited to be launching into the UK in February 2023 and have some incredible new fragrances we’re working on.

NON SURGICAL SOLUTIONS AT KAI MEDISPA

Treatments don’t always need to be invasive to get great aesthetic results. While some have considered the surgical face lift as the gold standard for achieving dramatic rejuvenation since the 1960s, in recent years, countless devices have come to market promising to tone, tighten, resurface and revitalise, many of which don’t even pierce the skin.

Positioning itself as the non-surgical solution is Kaiz Medispa. Open just a year, Kaiz had attracted many individuals to its door because of the offering. Beautiful environment joint with effective non-surgical solutions.

A facelift is often still the best treatment for those with significant laxity of the face and neck tissues, but in the right candidates, non-invasive interventions can give excellent results. “The results are different, but non-invasive devices can achieve a significant lift to the skin of the face and neck with little to no downtime,” says Kai owner of Kaiz Medispa at Parnell Auckland.

Age-old problem

Ageing is a natural process, but it’s one many are seeking to slow it down. Ageing is characterised by decreasing skin elasticity resulting in thinning of the epidermal and dermal skin layers leading to fine lines, wrinkles, tone and skin texture issues.

Plastic surgery, and minimally invasive treatments such as dermal fillers and anti-wrinkle injections, are on the rise. However, these come with significant risks by changing the structural integrity of the face, adding product, removing tissue or freezing muscles rather than focusing on the cause of the ageing process – loss of collagen.

“With surgery, you have one treatment and get instant results,” says Kai, “With non-invasive devices you won’t get the same degree of tightening, but you can get very close.”

She adds that while non-invasive devices tend to involve more treatments, they are lower risk and less expensive.

“It depends on what you’re trying to achieve. I remember speaking to someone who had a facelift and was very happy with the results but her concern was that she still had ‘old lady skin’,” she recalls. “Surgery didn’t do anything to improve the texture, colour or tone of her skin. For that side of rejuvenation, you need a non-surgical intervention.”

Radiofrequency for rejuvenation

Radiofrequency (RF) is a technology increasingly used to treat skin laxity by increasing tissue temperature. The aim of this non-invasive technique is to induce thermal damage, stimulating neocollagenesis in the deep layers of the skin.

Radiofrequency penetrates to the subcutaneous layers, producing an exothermic reaction. The physiological effects on the dermis include tightening, firming and brightening. This is thanks to the thermal reaction that causes collagen to contract, promoting collagen synthesis and tightening the underlying skin structures without damaging the top layer.

The technology has increased in popularity in recent years since celebrities like Kim Kardashian and Victoria and Daid Beckham spoke out about its benefits.

In combination

Radiofrequency in combination with microneedling (RFM) is one of the up-and-coming solutions being lauded for the ultimate “non- surgical face lift”. Microneedling on its own involves pricking the skin with tiny sterilised needles. These small wounds cause your body to make more collagen and elastin, which heal skin and help it look younger.

Radiofrequency microneedling combines both technologies for ultimate collagen-producing power. Microneedling encourages collagen production superficially while RF goes much deeper to boost this production, creating faster and more dramatic results that improve over time.

The union of these two techniques helps to lift, firm and tighten the skin, reduce wrinkles, shrink pores and even minimise acne scars and other blemishes.

Radiofrequency microneedling can offer similar results to ablative laser procedures but with significantly less discomfort and downtime. It can also be used as a preventative and to avoid even more invasive procedures such as surgery when laxity is not severe.

Devices such as Secret RF and Focus Dual create controlled trauma that boosts production of collagen and elastin. The results are firmer, tighter, smoother, more lifted and hydrated skin.

“It’s all about prevention and remodelling that collagen so that it’s better quality,” says Kai. “There are lots of

Before and two weeks after RF microneedling and HIFU treatment

technologies that can plump the skin and stimulate collagen such as RF and ablative lasers. But if you really want to tighten as you would with a facelift or threads, you need to target the SMAS [superficial musculoaponeurotic system] layer.”

High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) can be added to cause reversible damage to the far deeper SMAS layer of the skin, which then helps tighten and pull, especially in the jowls and around the eyes. By combining HIFU with RFM, results can be maximised at every layer.

“A facelift is still going to give the most dramatic results. But if you are not ready for that step, or can’t afford the downtime, risk or financial expense, then HIFU is a really good option,” says Kai.

For any kind of concerns, consultation is always the first step. A thorough skin analysis, education and treatment plan that suits an individual patient lifestyle is given to make sure patients are well-informed before any procedure. AQUAVIVA IV

INTRODUCES AN EXCITING NEW INFUSION CONCEPT

Michael, one of our clients said after his treatment, “I have zero pain today and ten times more energy. The feeling of well being is incredible. Thank you.”

After detailed analysis we offer our clients an individualised treatment concept utilising state of the art therapies imported from Germany.

The University of Magdeburg, Germany showed that the treatment protocol we follow positively influences the metabolism and regeneration of mitochondria resulting in anti-ageing, increased energy and revitalisation.

Mitochondria are the powerhouse of our cells and produce the energy our bodies need to fuel our everyday lives, stay young and fit. Dr H Kremer, a famous German doctor who was ahead of his time, recognised that health and energy are interrelated and believed that the path to better health was “to recognise and treat mitochondrial dysfunction.”

In a healthy person there are thousands of mitochondria in almost every cell of the body.

Many illnesses arise when the energy production in the mitochondria is disturbed, for example mitochondrial dysfunction is involved in the development of Alzheimer’s disease.

When cells don’t function properly

Many areas of our modern life cause the systematic breakdown of mitochondria in the body including environmental toxins, micro-plastics, heavy metal toxicity, certain medications, electro smog, food sensitivities, chronic infections e.g. Glandular fever, Herpes virus or Lyme disease and deficiencies of vitamins and vital substances such as trace elements.

As a result of these environmental toxins we are seeing ever more free radicals being produced in the body which cause lack of energy, ageing and can lead to a number of slowly progressing illnesses.

I’ve always appreciated seamless and effortless travel, and feel privileged to spend my days crafting the most unique experiences that go far beyond the beds you sleep in. I’m incredibly passionate about New Zealand and what it can offer over—and this goes well beyond its breathtaking scenery and many adventure options.”

BECOME A MASTER TRAVELER

GOING ON HOLIDAY IS THE BEST. YOU KNOW WHAT’S NOT SO FUN? PACKING.

Forget an essential item and you’re left disappointed and scrambling to find the nearest store in your destination. Pack too much and you end up disorganized, burdened with heavy bags. To make your journey hassle-free and as comfortable as possible, a little preparation can go a long way, so here’s 10 things you simply must pack when traveling.

1. Travel pillow and sleep mask - if you’re going to be in the air for hours, you’re going to need to get some sleep!

2. Earplugs - blocking out the noises of air conditioning, engine sounds, crying children and other distractions can make travel much more pleasurable.

3. Lip balm and moisturiser - the air in planes is very dry, so use lip balm and moisturiser to keep your lips and skin well hydrated.

4. Toothpaste and toothbrush - pick up a travel version so they don’t take up much room and you can still freshen up on the plane or at the airport.

5. Outfit change - it’s always worth putting an extra outfit in your hand luggage so you can get changed upon arrival. (especially useful if you’re flying somewhere that has a different climate!)

6. Essential medicines - it’s good to pack some essentials in case you feel unwell during the flight.

7. Hand sanitiser - good hygiene is crucial when traveling if you want to avoid germs and viruses.

8. Headphones - the free headphones on long haul flights aren’t the best. So bring your own noise-canceling headphones so you can block out the surrounding noise and concentrate on your movie or music.

9. Water bottle - collapsible bottles are especially useful when traveling, because you can fold them up and they don’t take much space in your bag.

10. Snacks - don’t forget to pack plenty of snacks that will last for the duration of the flight. This way you can save money by avoiding buying the expensive snacks from the food trolley on the plane.

ANNA CUPPLES STORY ANNUAL REVIEW

WHEN ANNA CUPPLES HAD A HEART ATTACK AT THE AGE OF 35, SHE THOUGHT HER SPORTS BRA WAS TOO TIGHT.

The Auckland woman, now 42, felt “uncomfortable” and “breathless” but the pain wasn’t sharp. She considered going to A&E but said she felt “silly”.

“I was an Ironman triathlete, I felt invincible. I didn’t really believe I could be having a heart attack,” she said.

She visited her GP and an ECG test revealed nothing; her doctor thought the pain was inflamed cartilage from a workout. But “just in case”, labs were undertaken and a blood test revealed Cupples had had a heart attack, caused by Spontaneous Coronary Artery Dissection (SCAD).

“When it’s something so internal and so integral to staying alive, it’s really scary.”

SCAD occurs when there is a tear in the inner lining of a coronary artery. Blood then flows through the tear, pooling between the inner and outer linings of the artery. This reduces blood flow through the artery, sometimes blocking it completely and can cause a heart attack.

Cupples never thought she could have a heart attack, especially as she was now feeling fine. She was surprised when the doctor told her she needed to go to the hospital immediately. Her blood tests had revealed elevated levels of troponin, an enzyme released into the blood when damage to the heart has occurred.

Once at hospital further tests confirmed the initial blood results and at this point Anna called her husband, who at that time worked in the Airforce and was on a two-day work trip in Palmerston North. “I rang him and said, ‘Don’t freak out because I don’t know the story yet. But I’m in the emergency department at the hospital and I might have had a heart attack.’”

She was put on heart medication in the short term, and doctors kept her in hospital for three days to monitor her recovery.

Anna found the physical recovery relatively straightforward. After the initial discomfort that she’d experienced on the first day, she’d had no real pain and it seemed there had been no long-term damage to her heart.

“Then they put me on a treadmill before they discharged me and I could still get up to quite a decent pace without there being any concerns about my heart. They didn’t think there was any permanent damage to the heart muscle

itself. I was pretty lucky really. It was more of a shock than anything.”

Six years on from her heart attack, Cupples says she has fully recovered. She has been in hospital a couple of times since, with a suspected second attack two years on, but her condition is manageable.

Over time, she has become less actively worried about it, she said, but she feels lucky to be a survivor.

“When I read stories about people who didn’t survive them, I feel very, very fortunate and very lucky that I did. And really, in the grand scheme of things, mine wasn’t bad and it hasn’t left any permanent damage.”

Her advice to others who find themselves in the same situation is to try not to get too anxious.

“A lot of the information out there is from the US and I feel like it’s dramatised a lot. But try not to get too caught up in it. While you need to be cautious, try not to be afraid of moving on with your life. That helped me at the six-week check, my cardiologist’s attitude was to move forward.”

The Heart Foundation advises that for men and women a typical symptom of a heart attack is chest discomfort that doesn’t go away, but women also have symptoms that aren’t typical.

The warning signs in women include pain spreading as far as the shoulders, neck, abdomen and even the back, pain that feels more like indigestion, and even absence of pain with unexplained anxiety, nausea, dizziness, palpitations and cold sweat. Women may also experience unexplained tiredness prior to developing other heart attack symptoms.

WHEN IS A GYM NOT A GYM?

IT’S NOT JUST NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS THAT GET YOU THINKING ABOUT JOINING A GYM.

It can also be challenges like overeating during lockdown and most importantly, the need to future-proof your health in a densely aging population!

But what is it that stops you going? It’s the gym culture – the body proud and body beautiful, the intimidating muscle men and the fanatical spin junkies who all look like professional dancers. So how can you get fit without going to a gym? How can a gym be one without the negative culture?

The answer is simple. It’s when a gym is in fact a club and NEXT GEN is exactly that! The next generation of gyms is an inclusive, family friendly health club that has programmes and facilities for all ages and all levels of fitness.

The team at NEXT GEN have developed sports activities and programs that embrace your starting level and

challenge you to compete with yourself and/or with others. Through swimming, tennis, spin classes and HIIT classes, you can get a diverse work out that keeps you engaged and develops better cognitive and physical skills.

Working out has now become a lifestyle choice and certainly far more of a community engagement than the days of chain gyms pumping out weights and loud trance music. Step inside the world of NEXT GEN located in the heart of Parnell, that welcomes any level of fitness with personal trainers on hand to help you achieve your personal health goals.

We speak with the team, Nicky, Kirsten, Carlos and Nicola and ask them to share the magic they create and how we can all get on board!

What is the philosophy behind NEXT GEN?

Your time is now! Time is a precious commodity for everyone and at NEXT GEN, we combine multiple facilities together so that our members can enjoy a 360o Health and Lifestyle experience.

Upon arrival, what would one expect to experience that differs from other gyms?

As you enter NEXT GEN, you can always expect a warm welcome with staff that are genuinely happy and proud to be a part of the Next Gen team and what we stand for as a health and Lifestyle club. As you enjoy the convenience of collecting a towel from our reception team, you’ll then walk past our incredibly talented café team, who will be serving up hot specialty coffees and delicious meals to suit all tastes and dietary requirements. From there you’ll have the option of enjoying our incredible indoor pool area, where you will even find a spa, sauna, and steam rooms! Or head up to our gym where you can enjoy the upbeat environment and get in a good workout before heading up to the rooftop pool, to lap up the sun while you relax.

How does the main gym floor work and what’s on offer?

Our gym offers maximum variety. From gym floor classes that are bound to challenge and get you engaged with group training mentality, to plate and pin loaded machines for those wanting a heavy push in their training. We offer large open spaces to suit high intensity training and dynamic movements, with also the option of a more private area for those that may want a little more privacy as they work out and learn how best to manage their workout routines. Our gym also offers a dedicated Spin room with

Stages bike technology to offer a superior spin experience. We have both instructor lead classes and a full virtual class timetable, offering fun virtual rides from 60’s music themed to high intensity Tabata style.

Group fitness classes are included in the membership! An extensive group fitness timetable catering to all abilities and training preference. Those wanting something a little more relaxing can come in and join us for a Pilates or yoga class.

How can members involve their kids? Are they welcome at NEXT GEN?

Children & Families are always welcome at Next Gen, and we offer a wide range of activities and options for all ages. We are a family club and always look to include all ages where we can. We have several dedicated kids’ classes, offering interactive fun and confidence building for our 4 –11-year-olds. We also offer family classes where parents can join in and have some fun.

Next Gen offers a holiday activity program every school holiday, which is very popular here at Next Gen. The children get to enjoy painting, swimming, tennis activities, organised play times, and even experience our amazing café kitchen to make their very own pizza and food creations. Swimming is another core activity that we have for children and families here at Next Gen. We offer extensive learn to swim programs as well as private training for individuals who may need some extra help.

Lastly, we offer the convenience of an in-house crèche for those that need to get a quick work out in but have their young ones at home. Our amazing crèche carers will entertain and take care of your little ones while you get to work out, or relax in the club.

Summer means longer days, brighter sunshine and warmer temperatures, all factors that help us enjoy improved mood, better diet and stronger fitness habits. But there are a few summerspecific wellness tips and lifestyle habits to keep in mind for healthy summertime living.

1. Get your vitamin d - it’s an essential nutrient needed that helps with everything from immunity to mood to defending cells against cancer!

2. Protect your skin - if you’re going to be in the sun for a while, it’s best to adhere to the classic saying: ‘slip, slop and slap’

3. Stay hydrated - although proper hydration is important any time of the year - it’s especially important in the summertime sun and heat. You want to be aiming to drink about two-thirds of your body weight in ounces of water each day.

4. Practice self care - summertime is one of the best times to start a new wellness routine, it’s a time where we tend to feel more energetic, optimistic and better able to set and reach personal goals.

5. Develop an exercise routine - the warmer summer months are a great time to start (and stick with) a new exercise routine; whether it’s hiking, tennis or yoga, give it a go.

6. Time with friends and family - spend your time with the people who make you feel good.

MR OPINIONATOR

I ENJOYED GETTING THINGS OFF MY CHEST SO MUCH WITH THE LAST EXPOSITION OF FARQS, THAT I HAVE DECIDED TO CONTINUE, FOR THE SAKE OF MY MENTAL HEALTH.

Farq 3: WTF with 98 octane petrol? I have mentioned this briefly before but my ongoing anger requires a deeper dive. So, I’m drivin’ in my car … I turn on the radio … etc.

A scan of what we old people call the dashboard informs me that a petrol scarcity has arrived. And, lo!, before me there lies a BP station. Well, dear reader, I become vexed because my car’s maker recommends 95 octane and most BP stations have 91 and 98. Aware of the information I am about to impart, I fill my vehicle with half 91 and half 98; what tomfoolery is that, you ask. Well, allow me.

BP’s website tells us:

Our highest octane fuel, bp Ultimate 98 with ACTIVE technology is designed to help remove dirt and help keep your engine working as the manufacturer intended.

With ongoing use, bp Ultimate 98 with ACTIVE technology can help to deliver more power, enhanced responsiveness, a smoother drive and make your engine run more efficiently.*

Use bp Ultimate 98 every time you fill up to help maintain the performance of your engine.

* Compared to bp 91. Benefits claimed are based on industry standard drive cycles in a laboratory and may not reflect real world driving results. Actual benefit may not be attainable for all vehicles, and may vary due to vehicle type, vehicle condition, driving style, driving conditions and other factors.

Mobil, also, has 98 on tap and, sometimes, no 95, so what does Mobil tell us?

Synergy Supreme+ (98)

Mobil Synergy Supreme+ is our highest-octane fuel, scientifically engineered to give you more fuel economy from the first fill*. With double the cleaning additives of Synergy Extra Unleaded (91), Synergy Supreme+ provides more miles in every tank.

• Superior fuel economy

• Greatest engine efficiency

• Best engine power

• Excellent engine responsiveness

• Leading edge performance

• Maximum engine protection

• Advanced cleaning power

• Reduced emissions

So, from the above, it seems to be the case that the use of 98 octane delivers superior fuel economy and your engine will run more efficiently and it seems not to matter what the makers of your car have recommended.

Let’s take the claim of superior fuel economy. I’ve always thought that was untrue because, as I understood matters, if your car was designed to run on 95 octane, you get no more bang for your (increased) buck if you use 98.

I’ve emailed BP a couple of times asking why they sell 98 when only a handful of cars would benefit from the extra bang but I have not received a response. I have to say that I didn’t expect a full mea culpa and a promise to change its ways but …

In high dudgeon, Mr Opinionator trawled the internet for assistance and came upon the MTA (Motor Trade Association) site. Well dear reader, all that I thought appears to be true, unless it differs from that which my beloved thinks:

Motorists often ask, “even though the manufacturer says use 91 octane petrol, what’s the benefit from using 95 or 98 octane instead?”

In short, there’s none; you should use what the manufacturer has specified for your vehicle.

Modern engines are designed to operate with such fine tolerances that using the correct grade of fuel is vital to ensure engine longevity and peak performance. This will also help avoid costly and unnecessary breakdowns or repairs to your vehicle.

Using a petrol grade that is lower than what is recommended will have a detrimental effect on your engine. This is due to the engine operating at less than optimal conditions and the fuel pre-detonating (also known as pinging or knock), which causes excessive heat within the combustion chamber. The excessive heat can cause damage to the inlet or exhaust valves, piston, piston rings and even the cylinder itself.

On the other hand, and despite what some people claim, there is nothing to be gained from running your vehicle on a higher-octane petrol than that specified by the manufacturer. Buying higher octane petrol than you require is a waste of money.

I repeat: Buying higher octane petrol than you require is a waste of money – in your face, Ned Flanders.

I thought I would take the matter a little further and see if I could find how many vehicles in New Zealand would be justified in using 98 octane? I tried my beloved AA, which sent me to the MIA (Motor Industry Association), which represents most new car importers. The Principal Technical Advisor was very helpful and told me this:

“… we extrapolated the data based on market share of new (petrol) car sales in 2019 to get the following breakdown:

91 octane: 47.15%

95 octane: 20.53%

98 octane: 2.88%

So as you can see this is a conservative estimate and the numbers will be higher for each grade. For example, the survey also excluded premium and sports car brands like Bentley and Ferrari (whom MIA doesn’t represent) which are more likely to require 98 albeit they are a small percentage of the market (e.g. Porsche, who did respond, advise all their models require 98 octane (their market share is 0.2%)).”

My 50% at School Cert maths is hardly a glowing endorsement but if those proportions were extrapolated to a market of 100%, we would find:

91 octane: 67%

95 octane: 28%

98 octane: 5%.

Yet, some stations only offer 91 and 98.

The main takeaway from all this is not to buy 98 octane petrol unless it’s recommended for your car; “superior fuel economy”, my bottom.

LIFESTREAM CHANGED ME

Who is Lifestream? I know that name. I remember it from years ago and thought I had heard it all before… Sustainable, organic, plant-based etc.… Now that sustainability is the new craze, I’m bombarded with companies who push their sustainable products online, but I find myself lost with knowing who to trust. How can I know what is authentic or not? Is there any point to all these sustainable and plant-powered products?

Lifestream changed me.

Don’t you hate those nights when you toss and turn, wondering when the night will be over — feeling like it is dragging on forever? When I learned that 1 in 3 kiwis experience sleep deprivation, I knew I was one of them and we deserve better.

Lifestream’s Magnesium Sleep Switch called out to me when I Googled my options. When I read that it had optimal sleep ingredients Magnesium, Lemon Balm and Magnolia to help me switch off, encourage body relaxation and deep restorative sleep, I was desperate to get my hands on it. Switching my mind off at the end of the day is a tormenting battle, and for once, I wanted to win sooner rather than later. And for those days when things just don’t go according to plan, or I have an overwhelming amount of demands ahead of me and start to feel stressed out,

frazzled and overwhelmed I reach for their Quick Calm. Within 5 minutes I feel it start to calm my mind, helping me to think things through with more clarity and focuswithout the drowsiness. Quick Calm’s unique formulation of Bluenesse and Ashwagandha is a lifesaver for stressful days!

Gluten and I have never had a great relationship, but I still give into the odd sandwich and bowl of pasta. Sometimes, no matter how much fruit I ate or water I drank, the grumbling and groaning of my gut wouldn’t stop.

And then the Wheat Grass… Who knew my stomach needed help for an acid/alkaline balance? This green superfood is rich in chlorophyll, iron, vitamin C, plus other vitamins, minerals and enzymes and antioxidants to support acid/alkaline balance. My eyebrows raised when I found out this superfood is grown in New Zealand!

Lifestream’s plant-based products are a blessing — assuring us of the fact that natural nutrition is at the heart of human health. It’s safe to say that my skepticism about these sustainable products was brushed aside as my body settled into better sleep and embraced a quiet and happy gut.

Summer Pet Safety

Summer means plenty of adventures and enjoying the nicer weather. However, hot summer months can present some challenges for our furry friends. Here are some tips on helping your pet stay happy, healthy and cool during summer

1. Take extra care while exercising your pet: exercising in the scorching summer sun and during the hottest hours of the day can be dangerous for your pet. It is important to exercise your pet early in the morning or in the evening throughout the summer months as these are the coolest times of the day.

2. Beware of sunburn: just like people, animals can also suffer from sunburn. Pets who are fair-skinned or light-haired are particularly susceptible to the sun’s harsh rays. Skin cancer occurs commonly in dogs and cats, and even though the fur provides some sun protection, your pet needs sunblock applied every 3-4 hours on areas that have no, or little, hair.

3. Shade is essential for all animals: whether you have chickens, dogs, cats, small animals, large ones, you name it they all need to have adequate shelter that protects them from the sun’s harsh rays.

CULINARY

IS THERE A CARNIVORE IN EVERYONE?

When I got to menopause and hit my 50s everyone said to me there is no way to lose the menopause tummy fat, you just need to eat lots of plants and less red meat and you will be fine! Hmmmm. I spent 1000s of dollars on various pills and teas that advertised their products to me and had minimal results. I started thinking about it: animals that eat plants, like the common cow, the hippos, and the beautiful giraffes are all very big animals, and plant eaters and then the meat eaters, lions, tigers and cheaters are lean and fit. Food for thought as we start this story.

So I started on a diet of less meat. I was only eating meat once a week and consuming truckloads of vegetables. I had high hopes, but I was always hungry and I had low energy. It didn’t work. I constantly felt bloated and full and even though the thought of eating so many plants was making me think I felt good I actually felt worse. So, I put it to you: are plants doing us good or harm? In the 50s and 60s people ate fat and meat and simple vegetables from their gardens. They tended to be leaner with less depression and illnesses. Today we eat so many different salads it makes me cross eyed!

I decided to investigate further. My husband had heard about the Carnivore diet from a good friend so off I went to do some research online about this crazy meat eating diet. I found so much positive information that simply flipped everything I knew and believed in on its head. These people were just eating meat and animal products like dairy, fish and eggs and all of them seemed to be losing weight, they were re -- energised, had lower blood pressure, had stopped their medications and the list goes on. Ok I thought let’s give this a go!

I lost 4kgs in the first week, without feeling hungry at all. I ate all the fat, the meat, the cheese and eggs I could, and I could only fit 2 meals in a day as it filled me up so much. My memory retention started to improve, my energy levels increased, my inflammation disappeared, and I was sleeping well. Not one green thing passed my lips. My husband did it with me and each night we looked at each other shocked at how good we were both feeling and how much weight was falling of us. We were no longer tired, we slept better, and all the 50 plus inflammation and bloating was gone within a week. As we continued the diet I learnt that we need to eat organ meats like liver to get the full nutrition. My mother used to cook this when I was young and the smell made me puke so I found an amazing company in NZ called Home Grown Primal. Owners Janet and her husband Marti had been eating carnivore style for 4 years. Janet is a gym junkie and trainer and she already knew a lot about health, but more research let her back to the source of human nutrition, back to our ancestral diet. She focused on the way our ancestors ate primarily animal products and found that organ meat is the most nutrient dense food on the planet. Most people’s diets are lacking and as you get older you get less energy and bad sleeping habits form. Janet had fatigue she just could not shake, so they both tried a Ketogenic diet, high fat, protein, and low carb. There was some improvement, but it was not radical. In December 2018 she found the carnivore diet and has been hooked ever since. Her research to take healthy organ supplements led her to creating her own as you could only find them on American websites. And hence Home Grown Primal was born. Janet tells us “Organ meats

VANESSA BENNETT

are so nutrient dense that by including them you will see an increase in strength and endurance and you will increase you cognitive health. It has been proven from all the results that removing plants from your diet will have benefits. We add in occasional seasonal fruit and some avocado for variety but otherwise all our nutrition comes from meat and our organ supplements. It has blown my mind; I have never felt so good.”

Eating nose to tail and consuming organs and being healthy is a new and interesting trend. I was so eager to find out more, so I tracked Janet down and asked her a few questions. I wanted to know who she was and how Janet got to where she is today, she said;

I wanted the last 30 years of of my life to be radical, thriving and to have a blast! I believe each decade brings new growth, challenges, and different expressions of the self. As a 24 – yearold I discovered aerobics and found myself in the fitness industry. While having a teaching degree, it was fitness and health that shaped my life trajectory. Now at 60, I have grown into a healthy expression of every aspect of the femimine, in particular the mother, the maiden, the lover, and the huntress. I’m passionate about living my best life and at my happiest when on the water or in the hills - being outside is one of my greatest loves”.

She tells me, becoming a carnivore has been a step toward greater selfexpression and freedom. “Making a decision to step away from the standard food narrative and ‘thrive’ has changed me on many levels. Initially it was a move to see through the next 30 years in radical health and not have any of the old age associated with ill health that we, as a society, now take as normal. This has led me on a journey of discovery with the food industry, Big Pharma and corporate greed. I realised that I can be different, I can make good decisions for my health, and I can also be a voice in this field for change.

“FOR MYSELF AND MY HUSBAND THE CHANGE HAS BEEN DRAMATIC AND SENSATIONAL – WE ARE SO THRILLED WITH OUR NEW HEALTHY LIFE, AND WE ARE ONLY 6 MONTHS INTO IT (WITH A COMBINED 20KG LOSS SO FAR)”

Being a carnivore, we know that eating nose to tail is crucial. Consuming the most nutrient dense part of the animal is part of living in radical health. However, our country’s fifth biggest export is offal. We are sending this good stuff ‘away’ mostly into China for petfood and the United States for their pharmaceutical health and wellness industry. Martin and I decided we could provide our 100% New Zealand grass fed beef organs freeze-dried to New Zealanders instead. WelcomeHomegrownPrimal!

We have a wide range of customers and some of their stories bring me to tears. For a few, they have become pain free while others are finding a deep sense of aliveness they have been missing for years. While many people take HGP to support their nutrition, others just know the benefits of glandular therapy, how the peptides and enzymes work, and the overall health gains their own glands and organs can make with supplementation. Our organ products: liver, kidney, heart, brain, and lung are all dense with vitamins and minerals that work at the macro health level, supporting, nurturing, and feeding the corresponding organs. We talk about supporting ‘the like’. The glands in our products go deeper, they subtly work on the micros of the body, like the endocrine system, supporting hormones and bringing people into full robust health. Our customers are like you and me, wanting health and improved performance, taking a product that is natural - without chemicals, flow agents, additivesand one that is traceable.”

Janet inspires me. She researched, created, and followed what was proven to be right, yet against the trend. She tells me “There are a few people who have influenced me, and who I follow for up-to-date research, people who are making amazing progress in this space. I’m a bit of a geek and love reading research articles. I value being informed so I can in -turn advise with integrity”

Here are some great humans for you to follow and learn from: Zsofia Clements, Zoe Harcombe, Amber Ahearn, Paul Saladino, Anthony Chaffee”

For myself and my husband the change has been dramatic and sensational – we are so thrilled with our new healthy life, and we are only 6 months into it (with a combined 20kg loss so far)

And four years in how does it feel? “My changes over time have been quite profound. I’ve always felt sluggish and struggled to move those extra kilos, often feeling bloated and fat. I was always looking for comfort food, preoccupied with what I was going to eat next and seriously addicted to carbs! Being a Carnivore changed that. The first two years eating only animal foods had a major impact on my relationship with food. I was no longer looking for that fix.

The intensity stopped along with bloating. I noticed too, that my recovery from training changed. Muscle soreness was not a thing anymore and my muscles responded to more resistance training. Over time, but very occasionally I now eat a bit of organic seasonal food, a bit of fruit, raw

dairy, and honey. I encourage everyone to give animal based eating a go. Try a month.”

What is the future of health in NZ? There are a few people in the functional medicine space who are doing good things. However, until the mainstream gets the message that seed oils (vegetable oils) are poison, processed foods are not doing you any favours, reading labels becomes compulsory, and we get educated about nutrition, we will continue to have a major health crisis in this country and internationally.

Look at the food pyramid, our national nutritional guidelines still pushing for reduction in red meat and fat consumption. Our soils are depleted, and therefore the food we grow here is depleted. It is sprayed in the paddock and gassed on the supermarket shelf to make it last longer.

My passion is to keep advocating for eating local and supporting our local farmers who grow our food, organically and regeneratively. We can ‘survive and thrive’ by eating seasonally and locally. A good guideline for food shopping is thinking about seasonal eating - why eat fruit that has been imported when our own berries are in season? The best way we can support the health of our people is to look locally and consider where our food dollars are going. Supporting local farmers who are passionate about growing healthy animals on healthy soil is the best place to start. Eating evolutionary available foods is the key to having a positive impact on our health. These are the foods we evolved eating - meat, organs, fruit, honey, and raw dairy.”

If you could give our readers one tip for their health, what would it be?

My question and advice to them would be: ‘How would you like your life to be? – Would you like to feel fit and strong, pain free, and medication free? Consider living to the ancestral principles or tenets. Eat ancestrally, local, and unprocessed. Get good sleep. Connect with nature and create space in your life for ‘your time’. Bond with others. Fight for what you believe in. Get sun on your skin daily and get cold to support your immune system. Shield yourself from things that are harming you like chemicals, in your skin care, sunblock and food. Move your body daily.

These are all essential aspects we can incorporate into our daily lives to help us become radical humans living our best lives!

I would not have believe this if I had not done it myself, my partner and I are now 25kg down between us and have never had so much energy, we are thriving!

If you have any questions are welcome to contact myself vanessa@multimediamagazines.co.nz or Janet on homegrownprimal@gmail.com for more information.

Rum & Que’s Crispy Pork Belly

With a chili caramel hit that will have everyone coming back for seconds

Ingredients

Pork belly

Rib Rocker seasoning

Chili Caramel sauce

Prep

1. Score the pork belly skin with a sharp knife so the cuts go to the meat but not into the meat. These score marks will be your easiest way to carve once the crackling has been established

2. A good coating of coarse salt all over the skin and leave in the fridge in a tray uncovered for 24 hours

3. Make sure the tray is at least 1cm deep to hold any juices that may drip

Method

1. Preheat your BBQ or oven to around 500f+/260-280c

2. Gently wipe excess salt and any moisture from the skin

3. Place the pork belly into an oven tray and then into the oven or indirect BBQ skin side up

4. Cook on high heat for about 45-60 minutes. There’s no need to check this until the 30 minute mark. You may need to rotate the pan or move to one side depending on how the crackling is looking

5. Once you are happy with the crackling, turn the heat down to 140 C/285f

6. Optional step here is to add boiling water to the pan with some fresh aromatics like chopped garlic, ginger and some soy sauce. Only use as much water as needed to fill water to underside of crackling

7. Cook for another 60-90 minutes

8. Take out of the oven or BBQ and put on a rack to rest for 10-15 minutes

9. Carve into slices and then generously drizzle Slap It On Chili Caramel sauce over the crackling.

LIVING IN RADICAL HEALTH

JANET STOTT, CO-FOUNDER OF HOMEGROWN PRIMAL, HAS FOUND HERSELF THRIVING AFTER STEPPING AWAY FROM STANDARD FOOD PRACTICES.

Homegrown Primal offers a radical shift in the world of healthy eating, providing nutrient dense supplements that enhance multiple aspects of one’s wellbeing. With processed foods and imported goods driving a health crisis across the country, Janet advocates for eating naturally, locally, and being aware of what you’re putting in your body.

Since discovering aerobics in her twenties, fitness and health shaped Janet’s life trajectory. Now at sixty years old, Janet is passionate about how the natural outdoors feeds our health and wellbeing. Making the decision to become a carnivore for the good of her health, Janet realised that the illnesses associated with old age don’t have to be “normal.” This decision made her thrive with profound changes over time. Sluggishness and bloating became a thing of the past as Janet no longer turned to comfort food full of addictive carbs.

This led Janet to create Homegrown Primal, a nose-to-tail supplement range that balances the nutrients and gives optimal health and vitality. Janet advocates for consuming the most nutrient-dense parts of an animal to receive major health benefits. Her organ products, such as liver, kidney, heart, brain, and lung, are all dense with vitamins and minerals that function at a micro health level — able to support corresponding organs. HGP products work on the whole body, supporting hormones and improving health and performance, without chemicals, flow agents, and additives.

With her partner Martin, they decided to provide 100% New Zealand grass-fed beef organs to New Zealanders instead of losing our “good stuff” overseas. Our country’s fifth biggest export is offal, meaning we lose meat nutrients to pet food and pharmaceutical goods to other countries. They are passionate about eating local and supporting famers who grow our food organically and regeneratively. BULLETS, BOURBON AND BBQ

There’s nothing more quintessential to a Kiwi summer than the smell of a BBQ and when The Range NZ had the opportunity to BBQ with the ‘Cook Cartel’ and Barbecue B.O.I, they knew they were in for one hell of a day (and meal).

Cook Cartel is a competition barbecue team hailing from the deep Westside of Auckland City. They’re a family team and hugely competitive by nature with a passion for good food and amazing BBQ

Barbecue B.O.I (aka Ken Van Mackelbergh) are all about showing the world that Barbecue is not a season, it’s about community, culture, lifestyle and most importantly, about family and friends. As a competition pitmaster, Ken runs a one-stop-shop BBQ supply shop, where his goal is to provide kiwis with all things BBQ, including knowledge and tips to coach you through your first cooks or to troubleshoot any concerns.

These two BBQ powerhouses are legends in New Zealand and perform like absolute rockstars on the grill. They completely change the way you cook and will make your mouths water. They prepared a range of culinary delights at The Range NZ for their ‘Bullets, Bourbon and BBQ’ event, including smoked Brie, seared with Black Origin Blackball Black garlic and served with Truff truffle oil (avail at Barbecue B.O.I), and crayfish cream-stuffed brioche buns topped with seared scallops. And of course the main event, Black Origin Wagyu and Whitehart Kurobuta Porkdelectable.

When thinking of BBQs, we’re quick to slap a steak and some sausages on, whip up a quick salad and call it a day, but these BBQ superstars urge people to think outside the box and be more courageous with our BBQ menus.

THE KIWI OUTDOOR OVEN AND ITS WOW FACTOR

ON THE SHORES OF PAUANUI BEACH IN 2010, TWO KIWI BLOKES

IMAGINED A NEW WAY OF COOKING IN NEW ZEALAND’S RICH OUTDOORS.

They wanted something to deliver the ultimate Kiwi outdoor experience, something that enhances quality time outside, and provides warmth as well as being a cooking facility for any occasion.

Inspired to create something completely NZ made, sizeable with the idea of commercial use, and with the WOW factor, these kiwis put their heads together to begin their design. The vast New Zealand market had many options when it came to outdoor cooking, but nothing that was a pizza and cooking oven, an outdoor fire, and able to heat up incredibly fast all at once.

For Kiwis, enjoying the outdoors begins with friends and family. Promoting a sense of community was a strong contributing value to the brand of The Kiwi Outdoors — a value that influenced the versatility and usability of their design. The fundamentals of the project began with a community of local gurus and mates in the steel industry who helped finalise every detail of the design. After two prototypes were built and tested, showing off the chart temperatures and warped steel, The Kiwi Outdoor Oven was ready to hit the market in 2012.

Waikato business, Arstone Limited, became the happy owner of The Kiwi Outdoor in 2018 — ready to take this amazing product onto the next leg of its journey in Aotearoa. Owners, Brendan and Naomi, continue to uphold the values of community embedded in The Kiwi Outdoor revolution. They are on a mission to create outdoor spaces that bring kiwis together, generating experiences and memories.

The Kiwi Outdoor is your ultimate caterer for its features are a true reflection of their motto: “Food & fire. Bringing people together.”

For a great outdoor cooking experience, this oven’s versatility makes it easier to not only be with your

family and friends, but to cook in the same space without having to go inside to the kitchen. The Kiwi Outdoor Oven performs just as well as your kitchen oven, able to cook a range of delights from slow roasts to chocolate puddings. The ovens design adds a special smoke-infused flavour to give you that real campfire taste, however, this feature is controllable depending

With an oven chamber separated from the fire dampers and fire box, management of temperature is easy and flexible to your time schedule and tastes. The Kiwi Outdoor Oven is unique on the market — the only one providing a controllable outdoor oven

With safe temperature and fire control, maintaining a consistent heat for your guests and food is simple to facilitate with door dampers and radiating heat from the fire bricks.

In thirty minutes, this oven is heated to three

And this kind of temperature is perfect for starting up your craft of wood fired pizzas. The design of the The Kiwi Outdoor Oven boasts simplicity by demonstrating how easy it is to use and to heat, and it is dependable on lasting for years. The large oven can roll through twelve pizzas at once along three racks finishing with a built in Italian cordierite Pizza Stone, which allows for complete base crispiness before moving up to the next rack. Handmade from 5mm Corten steel with a 10mm plate through the middle, the Kiwi Outdoor is built to handle pressure. Ovens built in 2012 are still going strong today with several ovens recently refurbished looking brand new and all good for at least the next 10 years!

For all those fishermen out there, the smoker may be your new best friend. This oven uses the traditional smoking method of a “smoke box.” With the consideration of air flow, temperature, quality flavouring, and smoke, the Kiwi Outdoor Oven has vents and recessed flue that allows the smoke to stay in the cooking chamber longer, allowing the smoke to filtrate the meat perfectly and enhance that smokey flavour!

But a cooking oven and smoking box is not the end… You can get creative with the grilling and BBQ features that bring a whole new meaning to the style of your meats, vegetables, or breads. With different types of wood that you can burn under your food, the richness and taste of your flavours are limited to your imagination. Wood fired grilling in something everyone should try with The Kiwi Outdoor Oven for experimenting with the richness of wood fired infused foods is something that truly feeds the soul.

Choose your design that serves to your preferences: copper exterior or copper accents, large or nugget build, coloured ovens, or even custom adjustments to fit the oven into special spaces. Once you have decided on your build, The Kiwi Outdoor is here to help begin your creations with easy-to-access recipes on their website. Ready to embark on conquering your first focaccia or seeking some fresh ideas of campfire snacks? The Kiwi Outdoor has a broad range of delectable delights, sweet or savoury, to choose from with step-by-step guidelines.

Warm comfort with friends and family accompanied by the sharing of love and food is important to Kiwis, especially in the outdoors. The Kiwi Outdoor adds to this recipe of a perfect outdoor gathering, believing in the values of simply being together. Enhancing your outdoor space with The Kiwi Outdoor is not an experience you will have for only one season. It is an addition that will be long-lasting and see you through many winter nights, spring lunches, or summer BBQs with your friends and family.

CHEF RAFA ZAFRA’S

SEASONAL CONSULTATION AT LA PISCINA RESTAURANT

Restaurant: La Piscina

Location: La Residencia, A Belmond Hotel, Mallorca Cuisine: Creative Spanish

Chef Rafa Zafra celebrated his first season after joining the culinary lineup at La Residencia, A Belmond Hotel, Mallorca, at its open-air restaurant, La Piscina. The successful collaboration has become a guest favourite and now opens its doors to nonresidents for dinner.

Set between the Tramuntana Mountains and the Mediterranean Sea, this intimate hotel mesmerises residents with rooms overlooking hillside forests, the old town of Deià and the Mediterranean coastline. Guests can enjoy exquisite dining at La Residencia with the elegance of acclaimed El Olivo or the relaxed culinary offering at Café Miró and from this season, the outdoor dining delights of Chef Rafa at restaurant La Piscina.

Restaurante La Piscina is adjacent to the main swimming pool, with stunning views over Deià, one of Mallorca’s most idyllic 13th-century villages. Chef Rafa delivers a creative and technical approach to his cooking. He celebrates the abundance of local produce at its seasonal peak from both the land and the sea, offering dishes that taste of the Mediterranean. He creates innovative yet familiar recipes while grilling over charcoal, infusing a variety of fish, shellfish, meats, and vegetables with deep smoky flavours for al fresco dining.

Menu items such as Wagyu steak tartare, fried scorpionfish, and grilled crayfish are popular, along with one of Chef Rafa’s signature dishes, prawn carpaccio with caramelised onions. The menu breathes a distinct summer feeling, featuring an inventive vegan selection, including marinated aubergines with a Cala-diabla emulsion. The Catalanstyle toasted pineapple is a must-try; it’s one of the most popular desserts and not to be missed. Chef Ivan Acquista, a long time senior member of Chef Rafa’s brigade, now permanently leads the kitchen under Chef Rafa’s creative guidance.

Chef Rafa states, “La Residencia is an exceptional hotel in the picturesque village of Deià. My wish has come true in the form of a collaboration with the property. I am thrilled to provide authentic cuisine, centred around produce from this magical place, at La Piscina, the hotel’s most relaxed restaurant.”

Champagne Etiquette

Anne Batley Burton, AKA The Champagne Lady, herself

● Prior to enjoying your champagne of choice, it should have been chilling to a temperature of around 6 degrees if it is a fresh and lively Champagne or up to a maximum of 10 degrees if it a more complex, mature or vintage drop

● Slide it into an ice bucket filled with ice and water - note “into” as you want it to rest ‘in ice’ not ‘on ice’ (a common error with restaurants)

● The bottle should be held at a 45 degree angle, and the foil removed only from the cork area - never remove the whole foil leaving the neck of the bottle bare

● Always remember to keep your thumb over the cork whilst undoing the muselet to avoid a sudden pop

● Remember to always turn the bottle and not the cork when opening and it should open with a whisper

● Pour slowly holding the glass by the stem in order not to lose the bubbles and watch the rush of bubbles in the glass form a bead like string of pearls around the top of the glass (the smaller the bubbles the finer the champagne)

CHAMPAGNE CRU NEW ZEALAND GREW FROM A VISIT TO FRANCE IN 2019 FOR A GOD-DAUGHTER’S BIRTHDAY.

A few Champagne House tours later… and in particular, the humbler Grower Champagne producers, the broad variety of tastes that exist within the champagne world was revealed. We knew we wanted to bring this experience to New Zealand.

Grower (/artisan) Champagne is made by the same people who have grown the grapes. They have usually grown grapes for the big Champagne Houses in the past, and at some point decided to make their own champagne. Supporting Grower Champagne preserves the unique flavours of champagne that reflect the individual pockets of land the grapes grow on.

giants their 8ha vineyard is just one minute away from a $5,600 per bottle plot!

Roger Manceaux is five generations in the industry and exists because Roger did well in his school exams - the story goes that Roger was offered a plot of land or a bicycle if he did well at school. With great insight, Roger Manceaux now owns a total of 12ha dotted across different Premier and Grand Cru Villages. The magic of Roger Manceaux is the ability to produce many different styles and flavours from the different grapes and terroirs.

The founder of Champagne Cru Netherlands (& goddaughter’s husband) has spent many weeks scouring the Champagne region to discover the very best undiscovered Grower Champagne producers. The happy result is now available here in New Zealand:

Charles Hubert is a third generation champagne grower and producer in the prestigious Grand Cru village of Ambonnay. Charles Hubert combines exceptional terroir with formal training and traditional family know-how to produce exceptional champagnes. Rubbing shoulders with

Vauversin is a staggering fifteen generations of growing grapes and making their own wine. With Chardonnay embedded in their genes the family has grown Chardonnay exclusively since 1640, and up until 1928 cultivated their own vines. Their boutique 3ha vineyard is in the spectacular Grand Cru village of Oger. First in Oger to be certified Organic, they work hard all year round practicing biodiversity and doing everything by hand. Vauversin’s total production is just 18,000 bottles per year, with some rare labels limited to just 1,000 bottles per annum.

FROM BORDEAUX TO THE BAY

IMAGINE A MASTER WINEMAKER FROM ONE OF THE WORLD’S MOST PRESTIGIOUS WINE REGIONS BEING SO IMPRESSED WITH THE QUALITY OF NEW ZEALAND’S GRAPES THAT HE DECIDED TO TRAVEL ACROSS THE GLOBE TO COCREATE HIS OWN WINE IN HAWKE’S BAY?

That is exactly what happened with the renowned LVCA Wines, a range of super premium wines made from the finest grapes Hawke’s Bay has to offer.

What started as a simple wine advisory relationship between Bordeaux Master winemaker Ludwig Vanneron and New Zealand viticulturist and winemaker Chase Arquette in 2015 quickly morphed into something much bigger. A shared dream to make great wines from New Zealand that had the potential to stand beside the great wines of Bordeaux. New Zealand’s very own Grand Cru wines.

In 2016 that vision became reality as LVCA Wines released their first vintage. Two red wine blends in the Bordeaux style: Le Galant, a Cabernet Sauvignon dominant, left bank style and Le Charmant, a Merlot dominant, right bank style, both made from Hawke’s Bay grapes.

Le Galant is a powerhouse wine with the drive of pristine Cabernet Sauvignon blended with Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Merlot dominant Le Charmant despite the fullbodied nature of the wine lives up to its ‘charming’ moniker

and is soft and elegant. The robust Merlot blended with Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc.

While other wines have since been released by LVCA Wines, Le Galant and Le Charmant remain their showcase wines, the wines that represent the very best that the brand has to offer. Quality and age-ability are hallmarks of LVCA Wines. While for other brands each year brings a new harvest and a new vintage in bottle, this is not a given for the formidable team of Vanneron and Arquette. Their dedication to quality means they have no hesitation in refusing to make a wine. Should they feel that the grapes don’t meet the standard to produce a wine of this calibre, then Le Galant and Le Charmant will not be made that year. The ultimate commitment to making the best wine, or no wine at all.

LVCA wines are available in strictly limited quantities and by allocation only.

PROMINENT FRENCH WINEGROWER SET TO BOOST NZ’S ORGANIC WINE EXPORTS

Black garlic is fresh raw garlic that changes with time through the use of low heat and humidity of about 90% in a process called ‘the Maillard reaction’. Black garlic for Sam and Wayne (owners of Blackball Black Garlic) came about one night over a couple of cold beers. They had been hearing about black garlic and got chatting about the idea with Wayne’s own grow haul being a starting point. After a lot of brainstorming and research, they found themselves with a purpose built oven ready for their first 10kg raw garlic trial batch ready to cook. It was a striking success with the perfect product that is one of the world’s most renowned super foods with its amazing health benefits. Thus, Blackball Black Garlic was born - with the hope to help people push the boundaries of what ingredients can be cooked with, whilst knowing that what they are eating is one of the real natural super foods available. blackballblackgarlic.co.nz

The creation of a new organic vineyard in Otago, by a prominent French wine producer, is set to boost New Zealand’s exports and international profile.

Bordeaux based Edmond de Rothschild Heritage Wines has been granted consent to acquire a 52 hectares estate with 34.5ha of vines in Central Otago’s Bannockburn, along with the Akarua Estate vineyard, which was founded in 1996 by former Dunedin mayor Sir Clifford Skeggs.

Edmond de Rothschild Heritage is a unique, family-owned lifestyle brand, combining luxury hotels and restaurants, wines and farming expertise.

When fully converted and organically certified over the coming decade, the Central Otago vineyard will produce over 60,000 bottles of organic wines annually for the international and domestic markets.

DESIGN

THE WOMAN BEHIND EUROTECH DESIGN

Director of Eurotech Designs, Sophia Bristow, brings fresh ideas and innovation to the company. She completed a Bachelor of Management Studies from the University of Waikato after moving to New Zealand from China when she was just 15 and began her career with Westpac, working from retail to corporate and institutional banking. She has gained valuable work experience with the New Zealand Superannuation Fund in the Risk and Investments team. As the Director of Eurotech Designs, she provides support to the team and takes great pleasure in assisting each individual’s development into the best they can be.

Sophia, how did you get to where you are today?

My journey to today is somewhat interesting. I have been working in banking and the fund management industry for 16 odd years. In 2017, and by chance, Eurotech Designs came up as a purchase opportunity. We aligned with the strong support from both global brands and distribution channels across suppliers and customers. Fast forward a few years later and we became proud owners of the company. There have been so many learning experiences to date, and I’m continuing to learn and evolve. The personal growth has been fantastic to which I am grateful every day.

What motivates you?

For me, I am motivated by doing a great job and to represent something that is meaningful in helping others.

Who is your role model?

My role model is Paul Parker - someone I worked for when I was at Westpac. Sadly, he passed away a few years ago. He was someone who was very supportive of his team members throughout his career and his funeral was attended by hundreds. To date, we still talk about him and his legacy. He made a huge impression on me when I was first starting out. He always had the time to listen, be supportive and referring me to new career opportunities.

Tell us about your role at Eurotech Design

Really, I am a jack of all trades! But overall, I help the team to join the dots. I take on the overall responsibility of running the company, which I love, but I equally enjoy the handson experience when I can get involved with the teams and clients. My favourite thing is to see our team members grow, and once they understand their role, make it their own.

What is your favorite appliance?

Oh it would have to be the Wolf Gourmet toaster. I love cream cheese on sesame bagels and this toaster holds down the thick slices, warms up the rounded side and toasts the cut side. Very clever!

Describe your dream kitchen

My dream kitchen would be something quaint, functional and a space that allows me to keep an eye on the children while cooking dinner for the family. A space where I can have a glass of wine with friends, while finishing my roast. Everything needs to be accessible and open planned. I would love to work with a local designer, who could help blend the space in with the surroundings, taking inspiration from the colours around us. I would love to use Sub Zero appliances for refrigeration and Wolf appliances for cooking. A Wolf dual fuel freestanding cooker with gas would be my ultimate ‘want’ - I believe there is still something very romantic about cooking with gas.

What does the next 5 years look like to you?

I will be managing through the current set of challenges we face, with steady hands, looking for new and niche opportunities for growth.

THE EYE IS IN THE DETAIL

When it comes to making a house feel like a home, there’s more than meets the eye. Pulling a room together and transforming it into your perfect oasis that is functional yet stylish is not often an easy task. So, where to start?

1. Set the colour scheme - whether you’re wanting something modern and monochromatic, or to make a statement and go bold, choosing and sticking to a colour scheme will allow your home to pull together and feel cohesive.

2. Play with patterns - and don’t be afraid of them! These can be added to your living spaces in a variety of ways, from soft furnishings to larger furniture items or walls. The key to using patterns successfully is balance, you want to spread patterns around the room, not pile it in one spot.

3. Try before you buy - make use of paint, wallpaper and carpet samples by bringing them home and making sure they fit in with your space.

4. Get green - and add some fresh greenery into your home, this is a quick, effortless and budget-friendly home refresh.

5. Make it your own - any house feels incomplete without that personal touch - photographs, souvenirs, vintage heirlooms ect. Adding these will make your home look interesting and give you a space that is your own

Ballantynes has faced their fair share of challenges in their history, including The Ballantyne’s fire in November 1947, and the Christchurch Earthquake in February 2011. However, right from the moment John Ballantyne purchased the Dunstable House in 1872, Ballantynes has maintained a sense of obligation to the people in their city. Preserving with their long-standing tradition and providing quality merchandise is not where Ballantynes ends. They are also passionate about excellent customer service and offering a unique shopping experience.

This season is your opportunity to find Ballantyne’s exciting new collections to spice up your home or wardrobe. Be amazed by the unique finds in the Versace collection and embrace what latest trends could be your next love.

THE CALIWOODS STORY

THE STORY BEHIND ONE OF NEW ZEALAND’S TOP ECO BRANDS.

There are lots of little moments and experiences that led to the creation of CaliWoods. Founder Shay Lawrence had a nature-filled childhood, one that she remembers fondly. She was always being thrown into the beautiful environments that we have on offer around the country and through years of travel, it became obvious to Shay the effects of human consumption. It was hard to ignore the small pieces of plastic that were littering some of the world’s most isolated parts of the ocean. Plastic seemed to follow her to some of the most isolated pockets of the ocean.

After six years of incredible travel, those collected moments and experiences (and all that appreciation) started talking to each other. They collaborated, wrapped themselves around each other and molded into what makes up CaliWoods today - a hub for low waste products for the kitchen, bathroom, laundry, personal care and baby.

From a small start up, selling reusable straws (when no one knew what they were no less!) under a gazebo at the Sunday markets, to now, a certified bCorp with a range with over 40 products, Shay is proud of how far she’s come,

“People like to support good things with their money, they see value in products that are luxe, yet useful - and help them to reduce their waste. This has helped us grow from strength to strength.”

If you’re out to overturn your kitchen, the CaliWoods range includes epic products like baking mats, silicone stretch lids and beeswax wraps, or if you’re wanting to reduce waste when it comes to little ones, you can check out their reusable wet wipes, changing mats or tiny training undies. What’s more is that all of their eco products are made to last, with the idea being that you buy them once, and with proper care, they will go the distance.

With a focus on low waste tools, the main purpose of CaliWoods is sustainability education and waste reduction. “Your choices are helping Mama Earth as well as your own health. Think of everything as small changes that add up over time.”
