TESSA DAVIS MAMAKU SKIN

Ko Whanganui a tara te Maunga, Ko Waingongoro te Awa, Ko Waimarama te Moana, Ko Waimarama te Marae, Ko Ngati Kurukuru te hapu, Ko Ngati Kahungunu te Iwi.

plant. We wanted everyone to be able to reap the benefits of the Mamaku plant – extracts of which have been used for generations for rejuvenating, cooling, and hydrating the skin.

In Māori history, rongoā (traditional Māori medicine) has been used to cure ailments for centuries of past generations. Their plants, trees and soils were the medicine cabinets used to source a cure for any sort of health issue. Sisters Tessa, Adele and Karen grew up always using rongoā and in 2009, they decided to combine their knowledge and create a range of premium, natural beauty products. Enter: Mamaku Skin.

How important is the process in retrieving the mamaku plant? We have always moved with a value-led approach, which has been important to us from the start and begins with the harvesting process. Traditional Māori methods of harvesting means you need to acknowledge where the plant is harvested from. We always give thanks to the whenua (land), plant and taiao (environment) by way of karakia (māori prayer) and we believe this is a crucial part of the process. You need to karakia to the plant, to retain the mauri or life force, and it is that life essence that helps in the skin restoring functions.

We caught up with Tessa to discover more of her passions, her upbringing and her desire to showcase New Zealand ingredients and show how Mamaku Skin has learnt from the past to bring an effective product to the future. Tell us about your upbringing, which helped shape Mamaku Skin. We were fortunate to be raised in a close knit whanau – our parents, grandparents, aunties, uncles, and cousins are all extremely close. I had a blissful upbringing by the ocean where we experienced communal aroha and whanaungatanga (connection) and we are forever grateful for this. We love spending time with our extended family. After my sisters and I raised our own whanau, we wanted to keep this togetherness and work together as a whanau. How did Mamaku Skin come to be? We were asked by our Matua (uncle/mentor) Pa McGown to recreate mamaku into a bottle, as not everyone could go into the ngahere (forest) and help themselves to the mamaku

The karakia (māori prayer) when harvesting, we believe, reinforces the Mauri (life essence) and connection to what Rongoa is and the repairing process in our Mamaku Skin products What drives your passion? I am passionate about creating products of the highest efficacy, that are useful to people, that are aligned to our māori values, and support our goals of protecting our taiao (environment). And how important is it to showcase New Zealand ingredients? Our power of purpose for Mamaku Skin is to share Te Ao Māori with others so that we can unite to care

for papatuanuku (land) and our Taiao (environment) for future generations. We feel that we have a responsibility to showcase the natural benefits of our rongoā, but also to protect Mamaku from potential piracy from other countries. We know that’s a big task, but it’s mahi (work) that needs to be done. What is your favourite product in the Mamaku range? Our Mamaku Advanced Hydra Gel is the No #1 of our range. It is our hero product and helps so many… actually it’s a product for all the family and for so many ailments. What do you think sets Mamaku Skin apart from its competitors? We have three main goals in product development. These are; it must be functional and must work, it must be natural, and it must be science backed. We believe our products are what people are looking for. Other questions are; is it safe? can I use daily? Which of course, that’s a Yes! As well, being steeped in traditional Māori practices and values is a definite point of difference. The whole process is not only beautiful, but sustainable. Our Mamaku is sourced by our local whanau from their land, so we can always connect people to Papatuanuku, (mother earth) Aotearoa (NZ), no matter where they live in the world. What’s next for you? We are passionate about taking the beauty industry ‘back to the future’ – where natural, plant-based products are seen as premium. We’re continuing to share Te Ao Māori (Māori worldview) globally and have recently launched in Australia and China. Just do it, do your research and then bite the bullet and go for it. Things take time and you learn as you go, and don’t be afraid to ask for help. There are lots of people that love helping young people in business so find someone in your field and get some good advice. Kia Kaha! mamakuskin.com

CHLOE ZARA CHLOE ZARA HAIR

In the world of beauty and entrepreneurship, few names have made as big a splash as Chloe Zara. The co-founder of a thriving haircare brand, Chloe has carved her own path to success, transforming her passion for hair into a flourishing business empire.

apart; we don’t use any sulphates, parabens or silicone which means we’ve had to work really hard to develop these powerful multitasking, all natural formulations with an innovative scientific approach that can achieve better results, especially in the long term.

What sets Chloe Zara Hair apart from other haircare brands on the market? Chloe Zara Hair was developed in response to two decades as a hairstylist where I learnt about the needs of my clients, so the brand and products I have created have really stemmed from this strong industry background. A key part of this time was discovering the importance of scalp health, and using ingredients that really served to nourish and protect the scalp and hair; all of our products are developed by our formulator who has a background in skincare, so everything in the range is approached this way. The ingredients used across the range are commonly found in skincare and continually work to improve the overall health of your scalp and hair. Our commitment to using natural ingredients really sets us

Sustainability is a significant focus in today’s beauty industry. Can you share more about your brand’s sustainability initiatives? At Chloe Zara Hair our sustainability commitment is forever evolving. Our ingredients are ethically sustainable and renewable sourced, and when it comes to our packaging, our bottles and tubes are 100 percent recyclable and made from postconsumer recycled material. All of our packaging used is also from recycled FSC-certified material and 100 percent recyclable. As a brand, we’re constantly striving to do better and will evolve our sustainability practices wherever we can. Your brand has gained a substantial following. What marketing strategies do you attribute to your success?

Building a brand is about more than just selling products; it’s about creating a community. Getting the marketing mix right is really hard, as every channel is constantly changing and morphing with new trends and insights so you really have to keep your finger on the pulse. Authenticity and transparency have been key in our marketing efforts. PR, word of mouth, and demonstrations in-store and recently in-salon and social media have been instrumental in connecting with our audience. We also collaborate with influencers, taste makers, and importantly industry peers who align with our values, as they help us reach a wider audience while maintaining integrity as they are true advocates of the products we create. What advice do you have for aspiring entrepreneurs looking to enter the beauty industry? My advice would be to follow your passion relentlessly. Success doesn’t happen overnight, and there will be challenges along the way. Don’t be discouraged by knock backs, stay dedicated, keep learning, and be open to adapting your strategies.

Building a brand is a journey, so enjoy every step of it, and remember to pause, reflect and celebrate the small victories. What inspires you in your daily life? At the moment Chloe Zara Hair is so integral to my everyday life, and seeing my brand out there in the world, whether it’s in a store, or getting feedback from customers really inspires and drives me forward. Seeing many other kiwi brands doing so well both here in New Zealand, but on the international stage too. Do you have a favourite product within your range? Definitely my hair and body perfume oil. Its full of beautiful natural oils and its multi-tasking so you can use it to smooth frizz, add shine, as part of our scalp facial treatment to nourish the scalp and strengthen the hair. Its designed to be used on your body as a lightweight body oil that’s not greasy or heavy. We worked with a perfume maison in Grasse, France to develop our own signature scent of Sandalwood, Pineapple, Fig, and Saffron so it smells incredible. What is your best beauty tip? Look after your scalp! Healthy, strong hair begins with a healthy scalp. By creating a haircare routine that truly nourishes your hair and scalp will result in long term results for hair that is more manageable, stronger, thicker and shiner. Chloe Zara’s story is a testament to the power of passion, determination, and a commitment to sustainability. Her brand, Chloe Zara Hair, is not only transforming the haircare industry but also setting a new standard for environmentallyconscious beauty brands in the market. chloezara.com

JANET STOTT HOMEGROWN PRIMAL In our quest for optimal health, we often find ourselves exploring different dietary paths, seeking the key to well-being. For Janet Stott, this journey of dietary exploration led her to a profound realisation of the influence of diet on overall health and the extraordinary power of nutrition. Her transition from various dietary approaches to embracing the carnivore diet has been nothing short of transformative, leading her to newfound vitality, mental clarity, and freedom from joint pain. Today, we have the privilege of delving into Janet’s journey and the valuable insights she has gained. Moreover, Janet’s passion for super nutrients found in organ meats has inspired her to create Homegrown Primal supplements, providing easy access to these extraordinary elements. As one of our Women to Watch we are thrilled that Janet Stott can share her experiences and tips for those seeking their unique path to optimal health. Janet, your journey from dietary exploration to embracing the carnivore diet is fascinating. Can you tell us about the moment when you decided to make this significant shift in your diet, and what drove you to make that choice?

The Carnivore diet seemed like the next step in my health journey. I have always been healthy and high energy, and as I raced towards 50 I decided that I needed a way of eating that could support me through my 50s, 60s and beyond, laying the foundations for longevity and a pain free old age. The ketogenic diet was the first step. I discovered that removing carbs and processed foods really did initiate the changes that I was looking for, however low grade fatigue and joint pain did still plague me. The tail of Menopause was still licking at my heels with hot flushes and mood swings. The carnivore diet seemed like an exciting opportunity to harness the benefits of these super nutrients while eliminating the discomforts and deficiencies I had been experiencing. Can you elaborate on the specific benefits you experienced after adopting the carnivore diet? How did it impact your overall health and well-being? The impact of the carnivore diet on my health has been nothing short of transformational. I experienced heightened vitality and found myself free from the pain and fatigue that used to

follow exercise. Mentally, I gained remarkable clarity and inner peace, which was a stark contrast to the discomforts I used to face, such as urgency, abdominal pain, and bloating. The removal of plants from my diet resulted in significant improvements in body composition and overall health. I now feel truly alive and fully engaged in my work, all thanks to the carnivore diet. You mentioned creating Homegrown Primal supplements inspired by your journey. Can you tell us more about these supplements and how they can help others on their path to optimal health? Homegrown Primal supplements are a result of my passion for sharing the benefits of organ meats. Finding time to source and cook these organs is difficult and I realised that not everyone has easy access to these essential foods, and that’s where Homegrown Primal comes in. Our supplements are designed to provide a convenient and reliable source of these extraordinary nutrients. They are New Zealand Grass Fed beef organs, sourced from regenerative farms here. Whether you’re new to the

carnivore diet or simply looking to enhance your health, our supplements can be a valuable addition to your dietary choices. We believe that everyone should have the opportunity to embrace the power of nutrition in transforming their lives. What advice do you have for individuals who are considering exploring alternative dietary approaches in pursuit of optimal health? My advice to those considering alternative dietary approaches is to conduct thorough research and embark on a journey of selfdiscovery. Listen to your body, pay attention to how different foods affect you, and be open to experimentation. What works for one person may not work for another, so it’s essential to find a path that aligns with your unique needs and goals. Keep an open mind and consider the remarkable benefits that animal-based foods, especially organ meats, can offer. Nutrition has the power to transform lives, and your optimal health is within reach if you are willing to explore and adapt. Can you give us one piece of advice for business owners starting out? Starting out can be daunting. But most great adventures take planning and they take the motivation to succeed. Any kind of achievement in life comes with a sense of determination and belief that you are going to make a difference to your life and the lives of others. I believe that those seeds are planted within us to change the world. Follow those urgings from within and uncover your core motivations. These will definitely shape your offering to the world. Janet Stott’s journey from dietary exploration to the carnivore diet is a testament to the power of nutrition in shaping one’s well-being. Her insights into the significance of animal-based super nutrients and the creation of Homegrown Primal supplements serve as an inspiration for those seeking a path to optimal health. As Janet encourages, may we all embark on our unique journeys of self-discovery and unlock the potential of nutrition in transforming our lives. homegrownprimal.co.nz

SHADI SALEHPOUR

LET’S RENT – PROPERTY MANAGEMENT Shadi, can you tell us about your journey from Iran to New Zealand and how you found your calling as a property manager here? Certainly! My journey from Kurdistan Iran to New Zealand was a significant turning point in my life. I arrived here as a refugee with my family, and we did not speak any English. Before arriving here, war, survival and enemy linked all our conversations. But once in New Zealand that changed. Education, safety, and new life became our new conversations. From the thousands of Kurds that were displaced and dispersed and killed, we were the lucky few to have ended up here. Indeed, very privileged. From early on I knew not to take that for granted. And today, many years later I am thankful for being in NZ and being given a second chance at life. I am thankful for having clean water in my home, and for being in a country where the only limit is the sky! Here we have all the opportunities, and resources to make something of ourselves.

As for me, while my peers at school learned Maths and Science, I was learning how to speak English. In my early 20’s I fell into a receptionist job for a real estate company. From there on I dabbled in various roles, but my passion for real estate and property management soon became evident. I was drawn to the challenges and opportunities this field offered because I was able to help others and it has been a fulfilling career path ever since. You’ve achieved remarkable success in a field that often has few women in leadership roles. What qualities or strengths do you attribute to your success? I believe my success in property management comes down to a few key qualities. One of them is realising it’s not about property but about people and experiences. It’s about people’s emotions, dreams and income and as they place that trust in your hands, you build yourself up with skills, resilience and adaptability as the New Zealand rental market and

environment changes, especially over the last few years when the Residential Tenancies Act was amended and modernised to cater for current times. As a successful woman in a maledominated industry, what advice would you offer to aspiring female entrepreneurs and professionals? Give it a go! The real estate industry is dynamic and there are many career paths. Find your ‘why’ beyond the transactional reason, and there is your magic formula for success. You possess brilliance, strength, and capability. Deep down you will know you have the passion and desire to make something of yourself. When you say yes to opportunities, skills and experience will come to you. You will learn as you fall and rise again and again. I am currently reading a book called Add Value by Mark Carter. A sentence that has resonated with me so much is ‘Self-induced

pressure is where the magic happens’. So, give it a go. Invest both in yourself and your professional development, upskill where possible and attend industry related conferences and training. And lastly, believe in yourself, take action and don’t forget to give it 110%. Can you share a few business tips for women who want to succeed in their respective industries? Absolutely. Firstly, do what you do with pride! Be YOU in it, be authentic, as people like to work with people they like. Showcase your skill, shout it to the world and build a personal brand people follow and, in this process, you create active and loyal advocates and customers. Connect with industry leaders and find a support network and like-minded individuals who can guide and inspire you. Embrace innovation, say yes to interviews, podcasts and putting your name out there as partnerships like these will help you become an industry expert in your field.

Shadi Salehpour’s inspiring journey started after coming to New Zealand as a refugee with nothing, to learning English and then to running a successful property management business, Let’s Rent. Shadi has won several industry awards both national and international and most recently her company Let’s Rent was the award finalist as small property management company of the year by Real Estate Institute of NZ. Her success as a property manager, and her commitment to empowering women in the business world serve as a shining example of what can be achieved with determination, resilience, and a passion for one’s chosen path. letsrent.co.nz

CRAFTING EXCELLENCE: A CONVERSATION WITH LYZADIE RENAULT, VISIONARY ARTIST AND ARCHIDESIGNER As one of our Women to watch we are fascinated with Lyzadie and her art and design, certain individuals stand out not just for their creativity but also for their commitment to sustainable practices and excellence. Lyzadie Renault, a prominent artist, archidesigner and she is a trailblazer. Her creations, born from a deep connection to the pristine landscapes of her homeland, exemplify a harmonious blend of natural materials, timeless design, and exquisite craftsmanship. In this exclusive Q&A, we delve into Lyzadie’s inspirations, creative process, and her dedication to ethical positive luxury. Lyzadie, your creations at LyZadie Design Studio reflect a deep connection to New Zealand’s natural beauty. How does your environment inspire your work? New Zealand’s green islands are a constant wellspring of inspiration for me. The simplicity, spirit, and culture of this land serve as the initial spark for each piece I create. Whether it’s the hues of the landscapes or the cultural richness, there’s an inherent beauty that shapes my vision and infuses a unique character into every design.

Your commitment to sustainable practices is evident in your use of raw and rescued materials. How do you balance luxury with environmental consciousness in your creations? Luxury, for me, shouldn’t come at the cost of our planet. At LyZadie Design Studio, we prioritize minimal environmental impact. We utilize raw, natural and rescued materials, giving them a new life in our designs. Handcrafting each piece in New Zealand allows us to maintain control over the entire process, ensuring a conscious and sustainable approach from inception to completion. We are conscious of waste so our products are made to order or in limited amounts for special events. Giving Back a percentage of the sales is also part of our business model. I have always given back in my personal life so it seemed fitting to apply the same values in my business. LyZadie Design Studio is recognized for its dedication to excellence and true artistry. What advice do you have for young artists starting their creative journey? Firstly, embrace your unique perspective and let it guide your creations. Your voice is your most powerful tool. Secondly, surround

yourself with a supportive community of fellow artists, friends and entrepeneurs. The exchange of ideas and constructive criticism is invaluable. Lastly, stay committed to continuous learning and evolution. The creative journey is a marathon, not a sprint, and growth comes with perseverance. Balancing artistry with the business aspect of design can be challenging. What advice do you offer to budding designers navigating both worlds? It’s crucial to recognize that art and business can coexist harmoniously. Understand the market, identify your niche, and communicate the story behind your designs. Authenticity resonates with consumers. Additionally, build a strong network and seek mentorship from experienced professionals. UNHURRIED LIFE In a world that seems to whirl faster with each passing day, the age-old adage ‘nature never rushes, and it’s always on time’ carries a profound lesson for us all. This timeless wisdom is a reminder to embrace the unhurried, patient cadence of existence. Nature, in its infinite grace, has perfected the art of not rushing, and there are invaluable life lessons to be gleaned from its unerring wisdom. We all rush. We rush to get the kids to school; we rush to get ready; we rush to work, then we rush off to lunch and rush back to finally rush home for dinner. Exhausted, we then take a moment of non-rushing time. It’s ridiculous really!

appreciation of the moments that comprise our lives. Rushing past them means missing out on life’s most profound experiences. Nature also teaches us that healing and growth occur in their own time. Just as a broken branch gradually mends and a forest regenerates after a fire, our own wounds and setbacks require patience and trust in the healing process. Nature reminds us that life is ephemeral. Seasons change, leaves fall, and flowers bloom, all in their own time. This impermanence underscores the importance of savoring each moment and allowing life to unfold naturally.

In our modern, bustling lives, the pressure to rush is often palpable. We’re conditioned to chase after goals, deadlines, and success with breakneck speed, leaving little room to savor the journey. The consequence? We find ourselves perpetually striving, but seldom content.

By slowing down and allowing life to take its course, we gift ourselves the opportunity to be truly present in each moment. It’s in these moments that we find peace, joy, and a deep connection to the world around us.

Contrast this with nature’s rhythms. The tranquil flow of a river, the majestic growth of ancient trees, and the changing seasons all stand as testaments to the beauty of unhurried living. Nature takes its time, evolving and adapting over millennia, never swayed by the demands of haste.

As we navigate the hectic currents of modern life, let’s heed the wisdom of nature. Let’s remember that nature never rushes, and it’s always on time. Embrace the unhurried path, relish the journey, and find solace in the knowledge that, like the natural world, you too are evolving, growing, and blooming at your own pace.

Observing nature, we learn the virtue of patience. Seeds take their time to sprout, flowers bloom in their own season, and the tides ebb and flow with a timeless regularity. Nature, it seems, has an inherent understanding that some things cannot be rushed.

In the end, life’s most precious moments are often the ones that transpire when we allow ourselves the grace to slow down, to breathe, and to be in harmony with the world. Nature has been whispering its age-old wisdom to us all along. It’s time we listened.

In our pursuit of success, we often overlook the beauty of the journey itself. Nature’s unhurried pace allows for reflection, growth, and

THE

VIOLINIST Today, as a professional violinist performer, every time I look back, I’m reminded of my incredible journey and growth. Playing the violin requires discipline and dedication, as progress isn’t always immediate or easy. My violin is not just an instrument, but a guiding force in my life. From my mindset to my attitude, the violin has taught me invaluable life lessons which embrace the power of music and shape my other problem-solving skills. From my first steps with the violin at age 3, to intense 6-hour daily training sessions at 10, my journey has been filled with ups and downs. Some days bring immense happiness, while others leave me grappling with how to enhance my skills and techniques. The first challenges I encountered on my violin journey was how to make the repetition of practice sessions more interesting. I would identify an aspect of technique or musicianship to improve upon for that particular session instead of mindlessly going through the motions. Whether it was bow control or intonation accuracy, having a clear objective made each repetition meaningful and gave me a sense of accomplishment when I

saw progress. By this yearly mindset training, as I grew up, I never quite understood the concept of boredom. Friends would complain about having nothing to do or being bored out of their minds, but that feeling never seemed to find its way into my daily life. I can always find small things to do or a small goal to achieve during the day. So instead of succumbing to the mundane routines or complaining about an uneventful day, I challenge myself to find joy and excitement in the small moments – whether it’s delving into a book or engaging in meaningful conversations with loved ones. Practicing the violin has also taught me a valuable life lesson about self-awareness. By always using a recorder to record my practice sessions, I have developed an acute sense of what needs improvement. When I listen back to the recordings, I can pinpoint which parts require more attention and focus. This process has become an essential tool in my quest for excellence in playing the violin. This level of self-awareness not only benefits my violin playing but also extends to other areas of life. Through this process, I have come to realize that self-improvement begins with honest reflection. The recorder acts as a mirror that reflects

39

my true abilities while highlighting areas for growth. Embracing this attitude of self-awareness has unleashed a deeper commitment within me to continuously strive for improvement not only in music but in all aspects of life. Another important lesson from the violin is the art of problem-solving through experimentation rather than dwelling on negativity. Instead of complaining about a difficult situation, try approaching it from different angles. When faced with a challenging piece or technique, it’s easy to get frustrated and give up. However, the beauty of the violin lies in its versatility and adaptability. By experimenting with various fingerings, bowings, and techniques, we can find alternative ways to tackle even the trickiest passages.

Similarly, in life, when we encounter obstacles or setbacks, instead of moaning about them incessantly, let’s take a step back and explore alternative solutions. Overall, embracing the violin mindset training has been a gamechanger for me as a musician. It has unlocked hidden possibilities within myself and pushed me beyond what I thought was possible. Also I have developed a deep sense of resilience, pushing through challenges with a determined mindset. Instead of getting frustrated by mistakes or setbacks, I now view these as opportunities for growth and improvement. Hannah Fang hannahfangviolin.com

MASTER MC

In the dynamic world of media and entertainment, few individuals carve out their careers as diverse and accomplished as Trudi Nelson. With an illustrious three-decade journey spanning radio, TV news, voiceovers, and MC work, Trudi’s name has become synonymous with professionalism, charisma, and versatility. Her journey, marked by an impressive list of achievements, has recently led her to new horizons, even as she continues to shine in her core domains.

Trudi’s warm voice has woven its way into the auditory fabric of New Zealand. As the corporate imaging voice for More FM NZ-wide, she adds a distinctive touch to the radio network’s identity. Her voice has also been a constant presence for brands like DVS and Curtain Studio, standing as a testament to her enduring talent and reliability. With a voice that resonates, Trudi’s capabilities as a voiceover artist continue to captivate listeners across various platforms.

Trudis’s journey began with a resounding presence in radio and TV News. Over the past thirty decades, her voice has graced the airwaves and screens across New Zealand, commanding attention with an unmatched blend of clarity and warmth. She has been a family face on prominent news platforms, having served as a TV newsreader for Prime TV (now SkyOpen) and Newshub Late on TV3. Her steady and commanding presence became a hallmark of reliability in the ever-evolving world of news delivery.

Her presence as an MC is nothing short of electrifying as she effortlessly guides events with grace and charm. From the prestigious Northern Club Karen Walker event to engagements with the NZ Marketing Association, NZ Plant Producers, and FMCG Business Summit, Trudi’s adeptness as an MC has cemented her reputation as a sought-after host.

She formed DreamCatcher Productions Ltd in 1999, marking a significant milestone as she ventured into the world of voiceovers and MC work. This strategic move allowed her to channel her years of experience into a fresh avenue, creating a powerful synergy between her broadcasting roots and her magnetic stage presence. She was so much more than radio. Remember the saying, ‘she’s got a radio face’? Well Trudi has a TV face but conquered both TV and Radio and her early days of modelling brought a sense of style and fashion to her presenting.

Beyond these achievements in the media, Trudi has recently ventured into kiwifruit orchard ownership in Auckland and the Bay of Plenty, illustrating again her dynamic spirit and dedication to embracing new challenges while nurturing her existing talents. As her journey continues to unfold, her influence in the world of broadcasting, MC work, and voice overs remains resolute. Her ability to pivot seamlessly between these roles while leaving an indelible mark on each venture sets her apart as a true icon in New Zealand’s media landscape. We look forward to seeing more of Trudis Nelson’s face.

Revisiting my Youth

A JOURNEY IN AGE REVERSAL

Science Research Wellness (SRW) It says on this nutraceutical company’s website you have 2 ages, a chronological age and a biological age, and you can change one (the latter). It’s true that human lifespan is increasing, but our health span isn’t keeping up. At 52 years old, I embarked on a journey to rediscover my vitality and well-being. Feeling the effects of ageing taking hold, and with menopause in full swing, I sought a solution that could rejuvenate my energy levels and overall health. Looking into the trending category of longevity supplements, I stumbled upon SRW’s Cellular System Range - Cel 1, Cel 2, and Cel 3, a scientific approach to cellular wellness. I decided to give it a try, starting with meticulously tracking my progress by establishing my current biological age and pace of ageing. Armed with a DNA age test featuring a finger pricker, a simple blood test is sent to a lab and the results are emailed back, then followed up with a telephone consultation. This testing drew a line in the sand to establish my base-line cellular health before incorporating these potent supplements into my daily routine. At 50, my biological age was a very pleasant surprise, two years below my chronological age.

The Ultimate Longevity Range: Cel Cel 1, a combination of 2-HOBA, Astragaloside A, and Rutin, provided the first spark of change. Slowly but surely, my energy levels

began to rise. The fatigue that had become my quiet companion started to dissipate, leaving me feeling more vibrant and alive. Cel 2, comprising NMN and Pterostilbene, further intensified the transformation. It felt like a curtain lifting, mentally and physically. I regained a sense of youthful vigour that had eluded me for years. My days became more productive, and I felt motivated to tackle even the most demanding tasks. Finally, Cel 3, featuring Apigenin, Fisetin, and Oleuropein, completed the innovative trio. My mental clarity sharpened, and my physical resilience soared. Everyday activities and long hours of writing and editing became effortless; the 3 o’clock slump that might prompt a coffee or sugary snack evaporated.

In Six Months, I Reversed my Age by Two Years! The second biological age test showed how brilliantly the cellular rejuvenation supplements had performed. With a revised biological age of 48, it was clear that the Cellular System range had thoroughly reinvigorated my cells, and in turn, my entire being. My biological age had decreased. It has been a pretty easy journey to follow, simply taking 6 tablets each morning with breakfast. I’m impressed and I know my future is going to involve a lot more time spent being focused on improving health and wellbeing. My journey with Cel 1, Cel 2,

and Cel 3 was nothing short of remarkable. These supplements changed my energy levels and concentration span. With each passing day, I felt like I was rediscovering the youthful version of myself, full of vitality, optimism, and boundless life force. There are many reasons we should be concerned about our healthspan. We want a future where we can continue to do the activities we enjoy, spend time with loved ones and maintain our independence well into our golden years. But the reality for many may be quite different from this.

Dare to Age Better With recent scientific advancements, we now know that there are many ways we can support our bodies through the ageing process – disease and ill health doesn’t have to be part of the definition of ageing. What we have only now started to expect, is that we might dare to live these extra years well. With energy, enthusiasm, flexibility and conscious recognition of the value of protecting our cellular health. srw.co

EUROVINTAGE FOUNDER AND CEO - NICK HERN RECEIVES FRENCH REPUBLIC’S ORDRE DU MÉRITE AGRICOLE Wine industry veteran Nick Hern, chief executive of premium drinks distributor EuroVintage, has been made a Knight of the French Order of Agricultural Merit for his exceptional contribution to the French wine industry. Hern’s 40-year career spans a wide sector of the wine business. A brand manager with New Zealand Wines and Spirits Ltd in the 1980s, he established a family retail enterprise in the 1990s which was subsequently sold to Lion Nathan, then managing director of South Corp/ Penfolds Wines and he began importing French wines in 1992. In 1997, Hern established Vintage Wines and Spirits Limited which in 2010 purchased Wellington-based Eurowine and now trades as EuroVintage. What began as a small wine shop business (based in Newmarket) importing wines into New Zealand has become a national distributor, employing 70 people and selling 1.2 million bottles of French wine annually. Mr Hern was nominated for the prestigious Ordre du Mérite – the Order of Agricultural Merit – by another recipient of the award, Xavier Pignet-Dupont, Asian Managing Director for France’s largest wine producer, Castel Groupe. The award was presented by Vincent Hebrail, Agriculture Counsellor at

Mantells last night. ‘Obviously, I was very surprised but honoured to receive this award. I have been fortunate to work with some of the leading French producers and brands over many years but the award also acknowledges the Eurovintage team who have worked hard in the trade selling these wines for a long time,’ says Hern.

SCULPT YOUR BODY WITH LIPO EYE magazine talks to Dr Tristan De Chalain Dr. Tristan De Chalain, a skilled surgeon with a passion for sculpting bodies, has dedicated his career to plastic surgery and within this area he has developed an art of shaping with liposuction. With years of experience and a keen eye for 3D contour, he has become a trusted name in the field. Liposuction has come a long way since its early, perilous days. Dr. De Chalian often shares stories with his patients about the pioneering French surgeons who paved the way. He emphasizes the importance of choosing a surgeon who is not just experienced but also working in licensed facilities, ensuring safety above all else. He explains the various techniques available, from the straightforward suction-assisted liposuction to the more advanced ultrasound-assisted and laser-assisted methods. But he always stresses that the key to success lies in the surgeon’s expertise, not just the tools at hand. As a responsible practitioner, Dr. De Chalain has a strict set of dos and don’ts for his patients. He insists on a smoke-free lifestyle for at least six weeks before surgery and encourages physical fitness to ensure patients can handle the procedure and recovery. Post-surgery, he prescribes compression garments and a gradual return to physical activity, with a focus on walking to prevent complications. Dr. De Chalian understands that liposuction isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution. The ideal candidate is usually young, with healthy, elastic skin, and isolated pockets of fat. For older patients or those with significant skin issues, he cautions against liposuction as a standalone procedure, explaining the potential risks of leaving excess skin behind.

He uses liposuction as an essential component in various surgeries, such as brachioplasty, abdominoplasty, and breast reduction, blending it with surgical techniques to ensure natural-looking results. What truly fascinated Dr. De Chalian was the potential of liposuction to harvest high-quality fat rich stem cells. He often uses this fat for autologous fat injections in procedures like breast augmentation and facial rejuvenation, further enhancing the results and leaving patients with a refreshed appearance. In the capable hands of Dr. Tristan De Chalian, liposuction isn’t just a procedure—it is a transformative journey towards self-confidence and beauty. He understands its potential and, most importantly, the importance of using it wisely, ensuring safety, and delivering the best possible results for his patients. Today, liposuction is a remarkably safe and effective procedure, which ranks worldwide, as one of the most consistently popular cosmetic surgical procedures available. plastic-surger y.co.nz plassurg@ihug.co.nz

VISITING FACEWORKS WHERE BEAUTY RUNS IN THE FAMILY Raised watching her mother’s impeccable work in the field of cosmetic medicine, it was only natural that Leigh Cattin would join Dr. Teresa Cattin’s highly regarded FaceWorks clinic in Mairangi Bay, quickly accruing an impressive client list of her own. Highly trained in the use of neuromodulators and cosmetic fillers and a leader in her field, Teresa has over 25 years’ experience in cosmetic medicine and is famed for her less-is-more approach to graceful ageing. A past President of the New Zealand College of Appearance Medicine who is regularly invited to speak at international conferences, she pioneered the use of the ‘French Touch’ approach to injectables in New Zealand, effectively using carefully placed, very small amounts of cosmetic injectables to rejuvenate and enhance the face subtly and discreetly. Leigh, a newly graduated doctor who recently travelled with Teresa to an aesthetics conference in Monaco, is planning to follow in her mother’s footsteps with a career in family medicine and appearance medicine, and the pair thrive on the working environment that a mother-daughter relationship brings. Working from Teresa’s clinic on Auckland’s Apollo Drive, Leigh, who has a particular interest in neuromodulators and lip enhancements for younger patients, has bought an impressive new dynamic to the space and a raft of new clients who appreciate the considerable difference that taking a subtle but considered approach to injectables makes.

‘With younger patients, it’s not about softening age-related changes on the face, but rather about carefully enhancing each client’s natural beauty,’ says Leigh. ‘Sometimes a lip may be just slightly too thin or asymmetrical, and a very small amount of product can make all the difference in a way that is not at all obvious or ‘done’ looking.’ Both women are passionate about the gentle but effective French approach to appearance medicine, with Teresa saying: ‘There is increasing evidence that tiny amounts of neuromodulators given regularly and started at the right time can actually prevent very deep lines from forming. Deep lines aren’t necessarily a result of age at all. They can be a family trait, which can start at a much younger age. Neuromodulators control the development of these family traits beautifully, for natural results that never look frozen.’ Incredibly serene but with just the right amount of comfort thrown in for good measure, the FaceWorks clinic is a true reflection of the professionalism and warmth you experience when you meet Teresa and Leigh, making it a true ‘beauty destination’ worth visiting. This bold combination of colours, with hues of Blush Pink, Ceramic Topaz and Ceramic Patina in playful proportion, has been applied to the Dyson SupersonicTM hair dryer and Dyson AirwrapTM multi-styler. Emma Sheldon, Vice-President, Colour, Materials & Finishes Design at Dyson comments: ‘Our technologies are pioneering and this colourway takes inspiration from an early example of our innovative use of colour. ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE

Enchanting

REGION OF NORTHLAND Once upon a time in the enchanting region of Northland, New Zealand, there existed a land of captivating beauty and rich cultural heritage. Nestled at the northernmost tip of the country, this mystical land was known for its breathtaking landscapes, pristine beaches, and warm-hearted inhabitants. It is a place where nature and tradition dance in harmony, creating a tapestry of wonder and adventure. In the heart of Northland, there stood a small coastal town called Kaitaia. This town was a gateway to the wonders of the region, drawing in travelers from far and wide. Kaitaia was embraced by the mighty Pacific Ocean on one side, with its azure waves crashing against the golden shores, and by lush forests and rolling hills on the other, offering a verdant sanctuary to all who ventured there. Among the inhabitants of Kaitaia was a young Maori girl named Manaia. She possessed a deep connection with the land and the sea, inherited from her ancestors who had lived on this sacred land for generations. Manaia had a spirit as wild as the winds that swept through Northland, and her heart brimmed with curiosity and a thirst for adventure. One day, as the sun painted the sky with hues of orange and pink, Manaia set out on a journey to explore the wonders of her beloved Northland. She ventured into the Waipoua Forest, a mystical place where ancient Kauri trees stood tall and whispered stories of the past. Walking amidst the towering giants, Manaia felt a sense of awe and reverence for the land that had witnessed countless tales unfold. As she continued her journey, Manaia arrived at the mesmerizing Bay of Islands, a collection of over 140 picturesque islands. There, she embarked on a boat, sailing across the calm turquoise waters. Dolphins danced alongside the vessel, their playful leaps bringing joy to all aboard. Manaia immersed herself in the serenity of the moment, feeling the rhythm of the ocean in her soul.

Further along her path, Manaia discovered the magical Rainbow Falls, a cascading waterfall that shimmered under the sunlight, creating vibrant rainbows in its mist. She dipped her feet into the cool waters, listening to the soothing melody of nature. It was in that tranquil setting that she met a wise elder, a guardian of Northland’s legends and lore. The elder shared tales of the legendary Polynesian explorer, Kupe, and the stories of the region’s earliest inhabitants, igniting a fire within Manaia to learn more about her heritage. Filled with newfound knowledge and a sense of purpose, Manaia embarked on a mission to preserve and protect the precious treasures of Northland. She joined hands with fellow locals and conservationists, working tirelessly to preserve the native wildlife and natural habitats that made Northland so special. Together, they planted trees, cleaned beaches, and educated visitors about the importance of sustainable practices. As the years passed, Manaia’s efforts bore fruit. Northland flourished, its landscapes teeming with life, and its people connected to their roots. Visitors from around the world were captivated by the region’s beauty and touched by the warm hospitality of its inhabitants. Manaia’s dedication and love for Northland had transformed her home into a beacon of harmony and preservation. And so, the story of Northland, New Zealand, lived on—a tale of a young girl who discovered her purpose, the magic of her land, and the power of community. It became a story passed down from generation to generation, reminding all who heard it of the importance of cherishing and safeguarding the wonders that lie within their own backyards.

CORDIS –

WHERE MODERN LUXURY MEETS CULINARY BLISS My recent stay at the Cordis was nothing short of memorable luxury . The allure of their newly renovated rooms beckoned me, promising a blend of modernity and comfort with a glamourous artful entrance to the new towers. As I entered, I was greeted by a refreshing contemporary design, where sleek lines, muted colours, and thoughtful amenities created a serene oasis. A delicious sleep was ahead of me in their beautiful comfortable beds. The pièce de résistance of my stay was the EIGHT restaurant, an epicurean delight. EIGHT effortlessly showcased the diversity of global cuisines, allowing me to embark on a culinary journey that spanned continents. The vibrant flavours, exotic spices, and tantalizing aromas were an unforgettable experience. From Asian delights to European classics, it was a true gastronomic adventure. After indulging my taste buds, I sought relaxation at the Chuan Spa. I indulged myself with the Chuan Retreat package which included a massage, facial and pedicure.

Their skilled therapists provided a sense of tranquillity to melt away the stresses of everyday life. The lush surroundings and soothing ambiance added to my overall sense of calm. And who could forget the Cordis’s timeless tradition of High Tea? The ornate porcelain teacups, delicate finger sandwiches, and delectable pastries are a nod to a bygone era. Sipping tea in the refined ambiance of the Cordis was a delightful experience that bridged the gap between past and present. No one does it better. My stay at the Cordis was a harmonious blend of modern elegance, culinary indulgence, relaxation, and tradition. It left me with cherished memories, a desire to return, and an appreciation for the art of refined living. The Cordis truly exceeded all expectations and remains a beacon of opulence in the heart of the city. cordishotels.com/en/auckland

Scintillating SINGAPORE

Kirstin O’Brien of TORY & KO. Jewellers mixes business with pleasure in Singapore. Full disclosure: this is not a ‘must-do when in Singapore’ guide! It is more a ‘glamour-meets-gin-meetsgemstones’ story. Read on if you love any of these things… Singapore has been a great destination for a family holiday and a stop-over to and from Europe but on this visit I decided to channel my inner Rhianna and ‘shine bright like a diamond’… The Singapore Jewellery & Gemstone World Trade Show was the excuse and the experience was pure luxury. My business partner, Victoria Taylor and I had decided an excursion to an International Gemstone Trade Show was in order to source some specific sparkles (ie: pink sapphires, diamond bracelets, emeralds, tourmalines and tanzanites) for our bespoke clientele. We decided to take a few days out to gain some inspiration which we not only found at the Jewellery Trade Show but also at the bottom of our champagne flutes and whilst sipping gin. Sometimes taking time out of the business really does mean working on the business. Hot off the plane we started our research: stepping into the sophisticated elegance of the

Ritz-Carlton Millenia Singapore, changing into our cocktail outfits and heading straight to our reservation at ATLAS Bar in the magnificent Art Deco styled Park View Square building. This building had actually been the inspiration behind our Art Deco Collection on a previous visit so we were looking forward to just taking in the ambiance (and the gin martinis) to celebrate our arrival in Singapore. Perhaps it was the lavish orchid arrangements or the prancing antelope on the illuminated ceiling (or maybe the third espresso martini?) but we left heady on the atmosphere of ‘the gilded age dreams’ and newly purchased ATLAS Bar Waterford crystal champagne coupes. These became the muse for a new diamond bracelet and necklace collection…. Who said you can’t mix work and play? The next day we decided to have a little retail therapy. The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands did not disappoint. From Alexander McQueen to Zanotti, the designers made it hard to choose a new handbag - but we stayed focused and finally settled on Saint Laurent. The glass of champagne offered by

the delightful assistant may have been a contributing factor. A delicious pick-me-up of steamed Truffle & Pork Xiao Long Bao dumplings at Din Tai Fung lifted our energy for a reconnaissance (and a little more shopping) in the Prada and Chanel boutiques (plus a Ferrari watch purchase for Dad) and then we headed back to the Ritz-Carlton Millenia Singapore for a relaxing La Mer Facial at the Day Spa followed by aperitifs at the Club Lounge. We had plenty of work-related things to discuss now that we had ticked ‘retail therapy’ off the list. Drifting off to our luxurious rooms after a delicious dinner, hand-made chocolates and ‘cordials’ (read: cognac), work resumed. A little planning for the next day was done: future reference notes for an article on the Hotel & a gemstone shopping list. I rested my head on the monogrammed pillowcase and marvelled at what we had achieved in the last 28 hours. The excitement of attending a Jewellery Trade Fair after years of Covid-impeded travel was quickly brought back to reality with the thousand-people queues waiting to get their registrations validated. Fortunately, the organisers decided to let some of us through into the event with our passports, preregistration certificates and Covid vaccination passes which semi-sped up proceedings. We were finally inside! The Singapore Expo and Max Conference centre was buzzing with gemstone and diamond merchants, jewellery manufacturing and fine jewellery suppliers over 5 enormous pavilions. We had our work cut out for us over the next few days. But first - a dance with a dragon! Victoria and I had quite a few specific requests from customers so we took to the show at full throttle. By 2pm we had secured a new, specialised cut sapphire merchant, sourced a tanzanite, drooled over the most amazing emeralds and looked at about 30 different diamond bracelet settings before selecting the perfect ones. By this stage we were a little hungry but the sandwich menu had run out so we powered through with the knowledge that the Club Lounge would be waiting for us back at the Ritz- Carlton.

That evening meal and desert tasted so good… The next day was another busy work day: we had a pink sapphire to source, a search for champagne diamond bracelets and a diamond necklace and some large Aquamarine and Amethysts to find in specific sizes and cuts. We managed to achieve most of our gemstone goals and then headed back to the Ritz-Carlton for a meeting with the Public Relations & Marketing Communications Executive, Belinda Leow. I had been asked to write an article on the Ritz-Carlton Millenia Singapore for another magazine so I had to put my alternative work hat on for the afternoon and evening. While we waited for Belinda we were treated to a glimpse of two Formula 1 drivers: Esteban Ocon and Sergio Perez. I tried to contain my excitement under my professional mantle as a hotel guest/writer/ business owner - but this was more spark and sparkle than one girl could take in a day! I needed to calm my nerves with a glass of Champagne and Espresso Martini…before heading to my room for a hot bath and then write about my tour of the hotel (which you can read on my website jetsetwanderlust.com) It was now my final day in Singapore before zipping off to a family wedding in Hunter Valley and I had a bit to do… secure a pink sapphire, partake in a gin at the Hotel’s Republic Bar (purely for research!), take some photos of the hotel and try not to lurk around the foyer looking for Formula One drivers too obviously. Somehow, with good will and a little grace I managed all of this. I said goodbye to Victoria and scintillating Singapore and squeezed in a little shopping at the beautiful Jewel Shopping centre at Changi Airport before being whisked away by Singapore Airlines at midnight. This diamond was a little rough around the edges but still shining brightly… toryandko.com

A JOURNEY OF RECONNECTION AND DISCOVERY The holiday began with my boarding of the Airbus 380 Emirates. My excitement was off the charts even after enduring a 17 hour flight. The first leg of the journey felt so enjoyable with a delicious dinner and drinks at the plane’s bar where I had the chance to connect with fellow travelers – this marked a wonderful start to a longawaited vacation. The second flight was only 5 hours long from Dubai to Prague. This trip held special significance as it was my first time returning to my homeland after the long shadow of Covid-19. A long and heart-breaking separation that lasted since 2019. The absence had been particularly felt because during this period I lost my stepfather. As I embarked on this journey it felt like a voyage through time, especially because I have not traveled alone for 16 years. It felt strange leaving my husband and son behind.

Czech and Slovak). At the Spa city Pieštany, I visited spas and relaxed, rekindled friendships and embarked on day trips by train (where you get a little bottle of Prosecco, water and coffee for free), then off to Budapest to enjoy a river cruise and visit to the famed New York Cafe. The journey continued to Vienna, where I marveled at the Schonbrunn Palace and the Imperial Carriage Museum. I strolled the city relishing its coffee shops, iconic Cafe Central and legendary Cafe Sacher. One of the most delightful aspects of European travel is that you effortlessly accumulate thousands of steps each day (I did around 20k daily),while savouring delectable pastries and schnitzels without a care. In Pieštany, my father’s town, coffee shops, terraced gardens, and fashion shows set the stage for a truly vibrant atmosphere. I attended a very special event where I was delighted to see old friends and watch performances by a friend who hosted the show and sang on stage (a famous local singer).

Being back home in my homeland allowed me to reconnect with old friends and visit places that held cherished memories. Settling in Prague, a city at the heart of Europe, gives you the perfect vantage point to explore the continent. All Europe’s wonderful destinations Rather than focusing on material are just an hour away by travel, but possessions, this time was you need to explore Prague first! a taste of paradise AT THE NEWLY RENOVATED SHERATON FIJI GOLF AND BEACH RESORT IN DENARAU Fiji, with its azure waters and warm hospitality, has always been a tropical haven. Now, the newly renovated Sheraton Fiji Golf & Beach Resort takes the island’s charm to a whole new level. My recent stay at this premium resort was nothing short of extraordinary, leaving me with unforgettable memories. The décor and rooms have been beautifully decorated, and the beds are big and comfortable with crispy white sheets to slide into. One of the standout aspects of my visit was the remarkable culinary experience. Fijian cuisine has not always been celebrated for being consistent, but Sheraton Fiji Golf & Beach Resort food was a delightful exception. From mouthwatering seafood to traditional Fijian dishes, every meal was a delightful surprise. The resort’s

culinary team earned a well-deserved 10/10, and I found myself savouring every bite, thrilled by the delectable flavours. As I lay by the pool drinking cold Pina Coladas and sunning my tired body, I thought nothing could be better than this endless relaxation. It had been 4 years since I had visited and I say just book and go - it’s such a short flight and Fiji Airways make it so enjoyable. The weather during my stay was nothing short of perfection, with sunny days at 29-30% and clear skies. Fiji’s tropical climate was in full glory, making it the ideal backdrop for leisurely beach strolls and massages and more cocktails. The daily morning tradition of singing for the guests is an experience to enjoy. As I walked through the entrance hall on the way to breakfast,

I was greeted by the harmonious voices of the entire office team, approximately 35 people, singing in unison. The sound of their voices resonating against the walls was a fantastic start to each day, and it left me feeling immersed in the rich Fijian culture. The resort’s crystal-blue pools, surrounded by lush greenery, were a tranquil oasis. Lounging by the pool, soaking in the warm Fijian sun, I couldn’t help but daydream about returning. My stay at the Sheraton Fiji Golf & Beach Resort was an enchanting escape that exceeded all expectations. It’s safe to say that I can’t wait to go back to relive the magic of this paradise on Earth. marriott.com/en/destinations/fiji.mi

THE PERFECT GETAWAY Visiting Sheraton Resort & Spa, Tokoriki Island, Fiji was an idyllic escape into paradise. We flew Heli tours and the flight itself was a 20 min mesmerizing view of the various islands and the blue sea. The day unfolded in a dreamlike rhythm, with every moment dedicated to relaxation and indulgence. We spent time wandering along the pristine beach, our feet sinking into the soft, powdery sand, swam in the turquoise waters and watched the water sports. We were far too relaxed to even consider water activities. The ocean’s melody was our constant companion as we explored the breathtaking hotel. Our senses were further delighted as we sipped on exotic cocktails, perfectly blended with tropical flavors, at the beachside restaurant and bar. Lunch at the restaurant overlooking the water was a culinary delight. Fresh, flavorful dishes showcased the best of Fijian cuisine, leaving us with unforgettable tastes and a sense of contentment.

But there was more to come. Indulgent massages provided a deeper level of tranquility, as skilled hands worked away the remnants of stress and tension. The serene ambiance of the spa enhanced the experience, leaving us in a state of blissful relaxation. Returning to our beachfront accommodation was a true delight. TROPICAL PARADISE My visit to Fiji Marriott Resort Momi Bay was nothing short of a tropical paradise dream come true. Showing itself off on the Fijian coastline, this resort offers a location beyond expectations. From the moment I arrived, the warm Fijian hospitality enveloped me, making me feel like an honoured guest. The overwater bures are a true slice of heaven, with direct access to the crystal-clear waters. Waking up to the gentle lapping of waves and watching vibrant sunsets all from the privacy of my deck was sheer bliss. You even have an Aqua man blow his conch shell (known as Davui) and deliver you a cocktail at happy hour! The resort’s dining options are a culinary journey. We dined at Fish Bar – where the international and Fijian flavours are served with a contemporary twist and of course using natural Fijian brand SALT left my taste buds dancing with delight. Wellness Reimagined:

LIVIA WANG IS TRANSFORMING THE LANDSCAPE OF WELLNESS FOR A DIGITAL AGE In the wake of the pandemic, the wellness industry has undergone a metamorphosis, evolving into a multi-trillion-dollar global powerhouse. Overnight, virtually everyone became interested in health. It started with how to dodge COVID-19, but the universally imposed lockdowns taught us how to slow down, build communities at a micro level and take better care of ourselves with improved work- life balance and better nutrition. At the crest of this transformative wave is Access, a trailblazing wellness innovation company led by visionary Founder and Group CEO, Livia Wang. Eye Magazine met with Livia during a recent visit to Auckland and we questioned her on the acceleration of the global Wellness movement, the flood of new brands, changes in consumer behaviour and the challenges and trends reshaping the market.

The Rapid Rise of Wellness The return to ‘normal lifestyles’ during 2022 and 2023 brought with them a new dimension to the concept of ‘freedom’, which many had previously taken for granted. Alongside the return to work and socialising, many people remain strongly engaged in health, beauty and fitness, reflected by an unprecedented surge in what’s been termed ‘wellness consciousness’. The industry, now valued at a staggering

4.3 trillion dollars globally, has become a cornerstone of modern living. This comes as no surprise to Livia Wang, who has spent the last decade investigating some of the world’s leading wellness innovations while curating a leading portfolio of health and beauty brands, a remit which she is executing flawlessly with blockbusters like VIDA GLOW, Napoleon Perdis, eimele and SRW in the Group’s stable.

It’s time to redefine conversations around health and wellness in the context of contemporary scientific findings. Wang explained; ‘It’s time to redefine conversations around health and wellness in the context of contemporary scientific findings. Experts in geroscience (the study of ageing) argue that the majority of illnesses and disease that occur in the closing chapters of our lives are an inevitable byproduct of ageing. If we can unravel how to reprogram the intricacies of how our cells work and how to best support cellular health, it’s feasible to dramatically slow, and potentially even reverse, ageing.’

Exporting the Iconic Antipodean Lifestyle

From humble beginnings rooted in the vibrant, sun kissed outdoorsy cultures of Australia and New Zealand, Access is forging a reputation as a leader in global wellness. There is a hint of irony in the fact that a talented young entrepreneur with international roots has set a new benchmark in selling the iconic Aussie and Kiwi lifestyle to the wider world, Tourism Australia take note. Wang explains; ‘There are several key touchpoints at play, firstly of course there is that aspirational drawcard, the stereotype of tanned, healthy people exercising on the beach, think Home and Away. Then there is trust; our customers want to know that the products we provide are exceptional quality, credentialled and safe, the stringent regulations that govern manufacturing in Australia and New Zealand mean we exceed expectations in this area. Finally, efficacy is hugely important. Our products are formulated to be category leaders based on their performance and this aspect really underpins our corporate mission, which is to redefine what people understand by wellness, and raise levels of expectation around how products can help improve health.’

Making Wellness More Accessible What sets Access apart is its commitment to breaking down barriers between science and society for the benefit of consumers globally. The Wellness Access Institute, a non-commercial innovation hub that connects pre-eminent international health experts with brands, enables cutting-edge scientific discoveries to be made and then brought to market quickly. As Wang points out; ‘Through the Wellness Access Institute, we have a best in class health discovery hub that’s tuned into the latest developments across international markets. Teamed with our proprietary social ecommerce model, we have a streamlined route to market that’s extremely agile and effective in its incubation of new brands. We are passionate about finding those ‘silver bullet’ ingredients first and designing products that integrate with our customer’s daily lifestyle routines to deliver tangible health benefits.’

The Changing Face of Consumer Health Expertise

Traditional avenues for accessing wellness information, such as via the family doctor, have given way to the ease and speed of the digital revolution. Consumers are more connected across digital devices and networks than ever before and as they turn to social channels, influencers, and brands for their wellness needs, the content they consume becomes increasingly customised around their preferences and individual profiles. Setting up Access in 2017, Livia Wang recognised the declining efficacy of traditional advertising and foresaw the rise of social media as a catalyst for new consumer and retail trends. Access pioneered a unique approach to wellness that seamlessly integrates scientific expertise, social talent, and engaged customer groups, fostering a sense of community and support that delivers high rates of success when it comes to sustained wellness journeys. Wang notes; ‘The most important thing to us, as a global wellness innovation company, is our customers’ health and wellbeing. We empower our communities to make informed choices, and we’re motivated to improve their lives by small increments each day, and over time, help deliver a significant advancement in health, wellbeing and quality of life. Being a wellness provider comes with great responsibility, and that’s something that we take seriously.’

Pioneering Social eCommerce Across Southeast Asia

Access’s expansion into Southeast Asia, particularly Singapore and Malaysia, reflects the company’s keen understanding of emerging trends in e-commerce. With a focus on the top tier of Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs), Access is at the forefront of shaping the future of social commerce. Live commerce, valued at billions of dollars in markets like the US and China, has become a pivotal arena for Access to connect with via its Celebrity Streamers platform, delivering sales of over $1M AUD for the VTN brand portfolio in a single live sale event.

At the heart of Access’s approach lies in the fundamental question: How can we reimagine wellness to continuously improve the health outcomes of our customers? The Future: Consumer-Centric Innovation

What sets Access apart from the flood of Wellness companies joining the market is its unwavering commitment to innovation. At the heart of Access’s approach lies the fundamental question: How can we reimagine wellness to continuously improve the health outcomes of our customers? This ethos permeates every aspect of Access’s operations. By embracing early adoption of emerging retail trends, investing in technology that facilitates multi layered user experiences and ensuring that their brand portfolio is the best in market, Access is positioned to shape the future of wellness. Wang concludes; ‘At a global level, we can identify challenges across the health landscape that are shared by multiple communities. Obesity, poor nutrition, metabolic disease, to name just a few. Leveraging our brand experts to design and build the highest quality preventative health and functional wellbeing products is one way that we can try to make a difference.’ accesscorporate.com

creating antibiotic-like products that target pathogens.’ A healthy gut can contribute to a balanced immune response, helping prevent the production of harmful pathogens and inflammation. These disruptions to your gut health can play a vital role in your daily mood regulation and mental health, and have been linked to conditions like anxiety or depression. They can extend their impacts to other areas, such as weight management, skin health, allergies and sleep quality. Here we explain more:

TRIBIOTICS: THE MOST SIGNIFICANT HEALTH INNOVATION OF THE DECADE? Explore the intricate link between the health of the gut microbiome and overall wellbeing. Learn how a diverse gut microbiome influences immunity, mood and so much more. Discover expert insights and strategies for nurturing your gut for improved health across a range of key body functions. Within the complex ecosystem of the human body, the gut, a vast community of trillions of microorganisms residing in the gastrointestinal tract, plays a key role in shaping our general health and wellbeing. Beyond its primary function of aiding digestion, our gut has far-reaching effects on various aspects of physical and mental wellness. This article explores the relationship between gut health and overall wellbeing, shedding light on how this intricate system influences our lives. So, let’s start with the basics. Aubrey Levitt, Researcher and Leading International Expert on the Gut Microbiome, explains: ‘Tons and tons of healthy, different kinds of bacteria all work together. It’s like having a soccer team where each player fills a valuable position. A diverse gut is a healthy gut; it should contain a wide variety of bacteria that feed on healthy fibres and create numerous beneficial byproducts essential for health. For example, a healthy gut produces vitamins like B and K. Butyrate is a byproduct of gut bacteria that can be anti-inflammatory and support a healthy gut lining, preventing a leaky gut. The bacteria in a healthy, diverse gut crowd out infections by fighting for resources, tuning the immune system, and

The Immune System: Guardians of Health The gut and the immune system maintain a dynamic partnership. A thriving gut flora supports a strong immune response, preventing the overgrowth of harmful pathogens. A disrupted microbiota, however, can weaken the body’s defences and contribute to various diseases/ illnesses. Mood and Mental Health: The Gut-Brain Connection Gut microbiota has the power to affect neurotransmitter production, impacting mood regulation. Imbalances in gut bacteria have been linked to conditions such as anxiety, depression and neurodegenerative disorders. Tribiotics – the Evolution of Pre, Pro and Post Biotics Tribiotics can be broken down into three core elements: prebiotics, probiotics, and postbiotics, each there for a specific task. The Prebiotics are the food and fuel for the bacteria in our gut to stay healthy. Probiotics are healthy bacteria that crowd out pathogens, support healthy immune function and healthy gut diversity. Lastly, postbiotics ae products created by healthy bacteria that are necessary for our overall gut health. So, what can you do to help your microbiome health? Nurturing the gut is pivotal for overall wellness. Incorporating these practices can support a thriving gut microbiome:

Balanced Diet: Consume a diverse range of wholefoods rich in fibre, promoting a varied gut microbiota Tribiotics: take a tribiotic health supplement if you struggle to consume adequate amounts of pre, pro and post biotic rich foods

Gut Friendly Foods; Incorporate fermented foods, garlic, kiwi fruit, onions and bananas to nourish friendly gut bacteria. Hydration: Stay adequately hydrated to aid digestion and nutrient transport. Stress Management: Practise mindfulness, meditation, and exercise to manage stress and support gut health.

International Microbiome and Postbiotics Expert Aubrey Levitt, explains: ‘When it comes to drugs and supplements, the health industry hasn’t been building complete products. We’ve been fixing holes rather than looking at what’s wrong with the underlying structure. As we learn more about this specialist area of health, what’s missing are medicinal formulas that address the full function of a healthy gut microbiome. When you have good bacteria in your gut that are being correctly nourished, it can help to keep you healthy in so many different ways.’ This is where Tribiotic Gut Shield steps in. Australia’s first tribiotic health supplement contains pre, pro and postbiotics which, when combined, create a Tribiotic compound. What makes it so special is its not-so-secret ingredient, Livax®. Which is a clinically studied, trademarked ingredient made from the pulp of the New Zealand Golden kiwifruit, commonly referred to as a ‘superfood.’ This is freeze-dried into a powdered form for Theronomic. It feeds a wide range of probiotics within the digestive tract and the kiwifruit pectin is slowly fermented along the entire length of the colon, which has benefits for the whole microbiome. Additionally, Tribiotic Gut Shield contains 15 probiotics and 5 postbiotics mentioned in over a thousand clinical publications. These live ingredients work together to support overall GI health, weight loss, heart health, immune health, and prevent infection. ‘This Tribiotic effect creates a complete medicinal formula containing all the elements needed to support a diverse, healthy gut.’ theronomic.com

A PLANT BASED OZEMPIC ALTERNATIVE Ozempic has caused a revolution in weight loss through its function around GLP-1 and regulating blood sugar. However, the popular injectables come with an array of unpleasant side effects. Leading Australian plant-based nutrition company, eimele®, has used this approach to craft Calibrate Reds™, an ingestible alternative to weight loss injections, using a unique blend of patented and trademarked active ingredients. The phytonutrient rich formula works at the root cause of weight gain and supports healthy weight loss by regulating blood sugar when used in conjunction with a program of reduced intake of dietary calories and increased physical activity. When we have excess blood sugar and insulin levels following a meal, the body is signalled to store it as fat, making it easy to gain weight. For most of us, this means we either need to scale up our exercise regimes, reduce caloric intake or change our eating habits. None of these options are easy when we lead busy lives, juggling commuting and working with family responsibilities, and often our food choices exacerbate the problem. The stars of the formulation are Reducose™ which stimulates GLP-1 to reduce insulin spikes after eating, and Morosil™, a trademarked extract derived from Sicilian Moro red oranges. These sweet blood oranges are now widely recognised at a global level for their effectiveness in assisting with weight loss and have shown incredible performances in clinical tests. MR OPINIONATOR OUT DAMNED SPORT At the time of writing this, the Mighty One New Zealand Warriors All Blacks are heading to a final with the Boks. I’m excited, that’s true, but not as excited as I was when the Mighty One New Zealand Warriors played the quarter-final at Mt Smart. Look, it’s definitely not ‘meh’ but it’s definitely not ‘huzzah’ either. So, I have forced myself to navel-gaze and to answer this question: why am I not going to renew my 4 Blues season tickets in 2024, while keeping my Wazzas’ season ticket? As I am prone to do, I must digress before getting into the meat of the question and the digression is this: what’s all the noise about ‘Up the Wahs’? Who died and said that was the catch-call now? I went to the Grand Final recently, mate (a biennial trek) and, proudly wearing my Wazzas shirt and cap, I was accosted in all manner of seedy joints by drunkards yelling ‘Up the Wahs’ at me. On the train to the game; on the way back into Sydney Town; watching the Ryder Cup in a sports bar – ‘Up the Wahs’. Respectfully, bugger me dead and don’t say that to me because I hate it. To those who were capable of understanding my slur, I made the polite observation: ‘Fuck off with up the Wahs, mate; the only thing that’s acceptable is: ‘Go the Mighty One New Zealand Warriors’ or, for friskier times; ‘Go the Wazzas’’. To show you how stupid people who mention the Wahs are, I point to the fact that they pretended not to understand me and carried on shouting about the Wahs and how their progress should be in an upwardly direction. So, this business of the Wahs must come to an end and I intend to be a bit more aggressive about it next season. Anyway, back to the rugby. I have fallen out of love with rugger. That is in spite of the fact that I played it from 6 or so through to nearly 30. Senior B open in Auckland … 5’8” … 10 stone with some wet clothes on … playing big, big boys from such glorious teams as Te Papapa Gold, Ponsonby Puritans, Glenfield Grizzlies. You haven’t lived until you’ve played way out the back at Avondale and it’s a 15-minute walk in the freezing

101

cold to any sort of shelter. And our forwards were selfish bastards who kept the ball in tight and in the warm because they didn’t want me to put ice on it, while yelling: ‘Under it forwards!’

out from the try-line. It gets worse; there’s a breakthrough and the ref, mercifully, calls a penalty (3-point fest, QED) but the winner of the penalty calls for another scrum…

Come to think of it, it was at Avondale where I woke up on the sideline to hear the Zambuck asking me what the score was (‘1978’) and suggesting I should touch my toes. I woke up in the ambulance. Reports of the incident have been exaggerated over the years to the point where I’m told patrons at the Flying Jug went outside to see what the impact noise was – pfffft.

Too many substitutes – I’m calling BS on the fact that a team may bring a brand-new forward pack (all 8) onto the field in the course of a game. The game is about endurance and being hard and making decisions under physical and emotional pressure and all those subs detracts. Collaterally, I expect that collisions are harder and more damaging for longer parts of the game when there are so many fresh players.

The rules of rugby are a disgrace. You’ve got any number of players (note my gender sensitivity there, dear readers) rucking or mauling, the ref is yelling at them as to the current status of the coming together (‘It’s still a maul, still a maul … ruck, ruck …’) and just about every person in that coming together is likely to be committing an offence. And another thing that sends me sideways is when the ref says something like: ‘Well done no.5’ or similar because no.5 has stopped/avoided cheating/not cheating. Shut up, Ref; you look after your people, as in: ‘Someone hold the Touchie’s guide dog’. Scrums – it can’t be a 3-point fest just because one prop is better than their opposite. And, it really does look like there’s a bucket-load of guessing going on. Sure, the ref training manual (always in braille) exhorts refs to look and sound positive and, to be sure, they follow the instructions but … it’s a guess and we all know it. Scrums – how much time does a game lose because the scrums are slip-sliding away…? I watched an Auckland Super game this year and I think they spent about 8 minutes too-tooing about a scrum just

I have to go; the cat is grizzling about getting a treat and he’ll end up biting me if I don’t hurry. But the last grizzle concerns the stupidest of stupid rules: the so-called deliberate knock-down. For such a subtle and instinctive reaction, there can be 10 minutes in the bin and a penalty try; what a load of cock! And, worse, in the vast majority of cases, the player is hoping to recover the footie before it hits the deck. In loig, no-one gives a rat’s; a player can bat it away and it’s always only a scrum and why not, mate? If ya doant want to have the attack founder, doant throw it near the oppo, mate! If it must, rugby can have a rule where the pill can’t be hit away by the hand, if it must but the current rule has to go. Anyway, I’ve had enough of the boring, grinding footie being produced most of the time and I’m handing in my badge and my gun. And they’ve got the White Lady at Mt Smart…

She was the darling of costume designers and fashion houses everywhere and beloved by fans across the globe, but at the height of her fame, ‘the girl in the white gloves’ gave it all away to follow her heart across the sea. In a lavish ceremony that captivated the world, she married Prince Rainier III and became Princess Grace of Monaco.

SUMMER DOG CARE Stay Hydrated – Ensure your dog has access to clean, fresh water at all times. Dehydration can happen quickly in hot weather, so keep their water bowl filled. If you take your dog to the beach, take some water with you.

Watch for Signs of Overheating – Be vigilant for signs of heatstroke, including excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, and difficulty breathing. If you suspect heatstroke, seek immediate veterinary attention.

Limit Exercise in Extreme Heat – Avoid vigorous exercise during the hottest parts of the day. Opt for early morning or late evening walks to prevent overheating.

Beware of Chicken Bones – Be cautious about chicken bones or any bones that may be dropped on the ground during outdoor gatherings. Dogs can easily swallow them, leading to choking or intestinal blockages.

Provide Shade – Create a shaded area in your yard or bring a portable shade structure when spending time outdoors with your dog. Shade protects them from the scorching sun. Never Leave in a Hot Car – Never leave your dog in a parked car, even for a few minutes. The temperature inside a car can rise rapidly and become dangerously hot. Protect Paws – Hot pavement can burn your dog’s paw pads. Test the pavement with your hand; if it’s too hot to touch, it’s too hot for your dog to walk on. Use Sunscreen – If your dog has light-colored or thin fur, consider applying pet-safe sunscreen to areas with exposed skin like their nose and ears.

Thirsty Dog Hairy Dog Grooming Kit $124.50

Miacara Urbano Set City Bag – Greige $285.00

Regular Grooming – Keep your dog’s coat well-groomed. While some breeds benefit from a trim, never shave a double-coated breed, as their coat provides insulation against heat. Prevent Parasites – Summer is prime time for fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes. Use vet-recommended preventatives to protect your dog from these pests and the diseases they can transmit. Remember that dogs rely on their owners for their safety and well-being. By following these summer care tips, you can ensure your furry friend stays happy, healthy, and safe throughout the warmer months.

In turn, the proceeds from Daily Good help to provide a commercially viable source of income for Ranadi Organics, which allows them to continue to drive scale for their impact work, which

supports rural Fijian women within their community. This is beneficial in a variety of ways, including providing the women with housing, education, and training and certification for organic farming. This work has been a ‘game changer’ for women in Fiji, who would typically work ad-hoc, informal jobs, and remain trapped in dependency – either on subsistence farming or on the low market value of their crops. Rhona MacKenzie, Co-Founder of Daily Good, said: ‘We’re beyond proud of Daily Good and the care that has gone into every facet of developing this truly purpose driven brand. We didn’t create a brand and then decide what initiative we’d like to run; it was the other way round – we created Daily Good as a sustainable brand to ‘do good’, while enabling us to support our partner farm, Ranadi Organics, and the vital women-focused impact work that they do. We’re thrilled to be able to provide consumers with a premium immunity shot product that meets the growing demand for ‘food as medicine’ that supports immune health.’ Daily Good is priced from $19.00 and is available for purchase from Countdown.

TALA

235 Parnell Road Introducing New Zealand’s first-ever restaurant focused on modern Samoan fare where diners can expect a wide range of traditional but slightly ‘tweaked’ Samoan treats, like cured salmon sprinkled with coconut, wasabi, sago and banana— and a nostalgic snack of raw ramen, taro and banana chips. TALA is the creation of Samoan-born chef Henry Onesemo (ex-Meredith’s, Apero and East St. Hall) and his wife Debby. TALA blends traditional Samoan hospitality with a contemporary interpretation of Samoan flavours for an incredible and unique dining experience. The name TALA represents the Samoan word for story, which Henry weaves into every aspect of the restaurant, from what he serves to its fitout. The eatery is centred around an umu—an open fire that is used in lieu of an oven—allowing diners to watch their dishes being prepared in anticipation. The “cave-like” restaurant has been decorated with textured timbers, deep brown fabrics and lighting that has been carefully placed, to keep the focus on the star of the show, the food.

The menu offers a choice of dining ‘journeys’, with each choice providing a series of dishes inspired by different elements of Samoan food heritage. These range from Henry’s own experience growing up in Samoa to traditional storytelling. Other traditional aspects of Samoan life are woven into the TALA experience too, beginning with guests receiving an offering as they arrive at the restaurant space. TALA is truly a dining experience like no other, for both food and atmosphere.

NAPOLI CONTEMPORANEA 297 Parnell Road We are sure that whoever coined the phrase ‘simplicity is best’ knew about Napoli Contemporanea. Their food makes one reminisce about their time in Italy, sitting on the streets, eating the freshest pasta, pizza and produce Italy has to offer while sipping on authentically made Italian wine and watching life go by. For those yet to experience Italy in the flesh, consider this a taster, a tease of the experience itself. Napoli Contemporanea is reminiscent of the cosy restaurants dotting the aquamarine South Italian coast, bringing diners traditional recipes from the streets of Napoli to Sicily. Located in the heart of Parnell, serving Neapolitan pizza and pasta with best Italian wine, Napoli Contemporanea is a ‘must do’ for lovers of authentic Italian. From their antipasti and insalate to their pasta and pizza, take a trip to Italy in Parnell, Auckland.

Jenna Carter, the passionate owner of Bossi Restaurant, has an unwavering love for the culinary arts deeply rooted in her Italian heritage. We talked to Jenna about her love of life and food. “Let’s unveil the flavours and memories that make your heart sing.” Jenna’s eyes sparkled as she described her ideal summer feast, a tantalizing blend of flavors that reflect her dedication to bringing authentic Italian cuisine to her patrons. What is your favourite summer meal? I love any kind of fresh white fish, grilled in lemon butter sauce, with some grilled asparagus or zucchini, and a caprese salad on the side. Perfection! With your Italian history, what was the first recipe you learned and from whom? When I was about five years old, Nonna started teaching me how to cook her secret pasta sauce, which was a slow-cooked beef ragu. This has been passed down through the family for decades and holds so many special memories. There is really nothing else like it.

The art of cooking, passed down through generations, forms the heart and soul of Jenna’s culinary journey. We know that restaurants that have a grounding from recipes of the past are always great restaurants. Tell us a bit about your heritage. My family is from Trentino & Veneto (Northern Italy). Nonna and Nonno settled in country Victoria, Australia, where I was born, and I grew up in a big Italian family full of long Sunday lunches and loud family gatherings. Country Victoria has a huge Italian community. What is your favourite summer cocktail? 100% a Bellini! The cold bubbly Prosecco paired with fresh peach nectar just screams Summer. It’s an any-time-of-day cocktail, and we have a particularly good one at Bossi Jenna tells us at Bossi their commitment to authenticity also extends to the bar, where the Bellini, a classic Italian delight, takes centre stage. Not only is the Bellini amazing, the Espresso Martini is excellent also! Italians love their coffee!

What is your best family dining experience in the world? There was a little Italian restaurant I used to frequent most weeks with my Mum, Dad, and brother, Kristian, growing up. It was called Roma, in Albury. It was run by an Italian husband and wife, who were chef and front of house, and everything was homemade. The smells, the noises, the music, the pasta, everything in that restaurant felt like home. Most loved moment in hospitality? After our first week of opening Bossi, there was a moment when we closed the doors at night, and we all just hugged and clapped and cried together because we had done it. We had done what we had set out to do, and seeing my staff (family) so passionate about what they do is the most inspiring thing. Jenna’s journey as the owner of Bossi Restaurant is a testament to her dedication and the indomitable spirit of her Italian heritage. It’s a journey that continues to bring the warmth and flavours of Italy to New Zealand one meal at a time. bossi.co.nz

Rio Lounge Chair by Oscar Niemeyer

I love the shape and simplicity in the Phasmida Horizontal by Christopher Boots. It is a great feature above a dining table— simple yet intriguing, embodying understated luxury

What is your most loved furniture piece? As a designer, my taste in furniture is constantly evolving, and I frequently find myself falling in love with new pieces. However, I must admit that I have always had a soft spot for the Rio Lounge Chair by Oscar Niemeyer; it is like a functional piece of art. Is there a certain style that you love to use for summer? I hold a strong belief in the enduring appeal of timeless design, which is why I like to invest in architecturally designed spaces and meticulously crafted furniture pieces. During the summer season, my personal preference leans towards the embrace of bold and comfortable furnishings. This approach leads to beautifully decluttered spaces that effortlessly resonate with the essence of joy and overall well-being. What pieces are perfect for beach houses and Air BnBs to create that luxurious, but cool feel? I have recently completed the design and renovation of a beach house up north, and our approach was centered

The Welcome sofa from Paola Lenti, is simply stunning: beautiful, comfortable, functional, and quirky. It is perfect for the long summer days enjoyed outdoors

around selecting items that bring comfort, style, and practicality to the forefront. We invested in hidden and practical storage solutions while leveraging light fixtures as design accents to infuse a touch of elegance. Our choice gravitated towards lighter timber furniture pieces, allowing us to explore the interplay of shapes and textures, ultimately curating an inviting and effortlessly cool atmosphere. In a beach house or Airbnb setting, my mindset automatically leans towards ‘pack and leave.’ It is all about practicality, functionality, and the allure of understated luxury. What is your favourite designer? I get inspired by many great designers who have made a big impact on the world of design. Some of them include Eileen Gray, Le Corbusier, Frank Lloyd Wright, and more recently, Kelly Wearstler. Tell us about the best window furnishings? That will really depend on the specific needs of the space, the location in the house, the size of the room, etc. Personally, I am a big fan of curtains. If I could, I would use them everywhere. They are a great way of adding an extra layer of texture, a sense of comfort, and a luxurious feel. Is there a tip or trick that everyone can use in their homes? If you are looking for a refreshing change in your home, consider rearranging rooms, moving furniture around, or adding a new piece of art— or even a mirror. Mirrors are a great way to bounce extra light, and they also create a sense of space. borgesdesign.co

TWO GOLDEN RULES OF INVESTING DORIS WANG AND LESLIE LI ARE INVESTMENT ADVISERS WITH CRAIGS INVESTMENT PARTNERS. THEY SHARE TWO SIMPLE, BUT NOT EASY GOLDEN INVESTMENT RULES AND THEIR VIEW ON THE ROLE OF A GOOD FINANCIAL ADVISER. Change is the only constant in life. As a result of changes in your personal situation and challenges faced, the needs and reliance on your money will evolve over time. Life doesn’t move in a straight line, so it pays to have a sound financial plan and a good financial adviser to help you move towards your end goal. When investing we believe there are two simple, but not necessarily easy to execute, rules to always keep in mind. Following these should set you up well to succeed. 1. ANY GOOD ADVISER WILL ADVISE YOU TO DIVERSIFY. A fundamental rule of investing is not putting all your eggs in one basket. It’s the simplest yet most effective way to insulate against risk and help investors weather any storms. This means looking at all your investment assets and your exposure to risk in each of them. Diversification could mean looking at a combination of cash, bonds, shares as well as listed and unlisted funds, to get the right blend of assets for each investor’s portfolio, says Craigs Investment Adviser Doris Wang. ‘It’s an individual decision and one that we work closely with our clients to determine the right balance. New Zealanders are traditionally very exposed to the property market and as recent times has shown, any asset can experience fluctuations in value. It’s crucial to spread your risk and cover your bases, rather than being too concentrated in one particular asset’, says Doris. 2. HAVE A GOOD INVESTMENT STRATEGY AND STICK TO IT. As Craigs Investment Adviser Leslie Li explains, this second rule might sound simple, but it can be much harder to follow in practice. ‘Setting a strategy involves more than choosing a diversified portfolio of investments. It’s a plan of action tailored to the individual for the good times and hard times. It’s a consistent and disciplined approach which manages risk, focuses on the determined time horizon, ensures that investments are suitably diversified, and adapts to market changes over time.’

‘It’s a fairly common misconception, but the role of a good adviser is not to try and predict the path of financial markets. It’s about constructing your portfolio in a way that grows your wealth based on your goals, needs and risk appetite and is sturdy enough to withstand changing market conditions.’ ‘As investment advisers we often act as gatekeepers to protect against irrational ideas or trades resulting from short-term market fluctuations to help you stay on course and keep your investment portfolio aligned with your plan, regardless of what is going on around you. Some see us as their money coach, an educator or a business partner.’

30 YEARS

The Heart Foundation is celebrating 30 years of its iconic win-a-home Lottery

Lottery No. 145, Clarks Beach, Auckland

Since the very first draw in 1993, 144 lucky first-prize winners in the Heart Foundation Lottery have taken possession of a brand-new, fully furnished home in popular holiday locations around New Zealand. At the same time, millions of dollars have been raised, thanks to the generosity of all big-hearted Kiwis who have bought tickets – some of them for many years.

“Heart disease is the single biggest killer of New Zealanders. Every Heart Foundation Lottery ticket purchased, and every dollar donated, is helping to fund vital research projects, world-class training for New Zealand cardiologists and heart-health education programmes. This work is helping to reduce the devastating impact of heart disease on our families and communities.” Dr Gerry Devlin, Medical Director, Heart Foundation

Other amazing prizes are also part of a total prize pool in each Lottery that regularly tops $1 million. In fact, in the past three decades more than 250 overseas holidays, 130 cars and over a million dollars in cash and gift cards have also been won by very surprised Kiwis throughout the country.

Thanks to major sponsor, Jennian Homes, seven stunning, first-prize homes are offered each year. Each home is expertly designed, built, and then beautifully furnished by a team committed to helping the heart health cause.

Lottery No. 140, Mangawhai

Lottery No. 142, Wānaka

Lottery No. 144, Whitianga

You could be next! “Calling our winners is very exciting,” says Heart Foundation’s Head of Fundraising and Partnerships, Alison Wheatley-Mahon. “Changing someone’s life with one call is just an incredible feeling. “Once they have the keys to their new home, the winners can choose to move in, use it as a holiday home, rent it for income, or sell-up and put the cash in the bank. Whatever the decision, it really is a life-changing prize.”
