New Zealand’s Engagement Ring Specialists : Nicola Baker, Dan Robinson & Founder Win Charlebois.
Changing the Face of Engagement Jewellery
A customers creation: Classic trilogy Oval cut diamond ring set in 18 carat white gold with a total diamond weight of 2.63 carats.
Founded in 1994 by Win Charlebois, The Diamond Shop started life as a traditional jewellery store. Over the years, the New Zealand company has developed into a specialist diamond retailer, with a commitment to exceptional service and a strong focus on engagement and wedding rings. As Win puts it, “becoming engaged is such a happy and exciting time of people’s lives,” and it’s one that The Diamond Shop are proud to play a part in.
All jewellery can be handcrafted to order in New Zealand, and clients have the option of choosing their own diamonds in addition to changing the band and setting and tailoring the fit. The Diamond Shop has successfully bridged the gap between ‘Main Street’ jeweller and the world of digital retail, with over 25,000 diamonds listed online to choose from, and an array
of ring designs and precious metal options, The Diamond Shop’s rings are handcrafted for you. And as surprising as it may seem, a bespoke diamond ring is not only more personal than a readymade cast ring from a major chain – it’s also typically less expensive.
Many large jewellers charge a lot more for the same ring, because of the perception of prestige attached to their brand, to say nothing of the behind-thescenes cost of making, storing and insuring large numbers of rings until someone buys them. The mass- produced jewellery itself is of lower quality, as are their diamonds.
By contrast, The Diamond Shop’s customers can be sure they’re paying for the ring, not for the box it came in –couples are often pleasantly surprised to learn they can afford a larger, higher-grade diamond than they thought, set in a ring of
exactly the right size and style. Attainable luxury is The Diamond Shop’s mantra.
The Diamond Shop’s staff know that buying an engagement ring can seem bewildering, and are available seven days a week to help buyers make sense of technical questions like clarity, cut and carat, in both English and Mandarin. The company sources its stones from all around the world, with suppliers as far afield as Canada, Botswana and Russia. All diamonds are certified conflict-free in accordance with the Kimberly Process, and graded for quality by the Gemological Institute of America.
To design your perfect ring, visit in-store at 280 Queen Street, Auckland or online at w ww.thediamondshop.co.nz.
It’s hard to believe we are in Autumn, so many beautiful hot days spent basking in the sun with the odd thunder storm as we slowly morph into the colder months! We definitely have nothing to complain about so far this year!
In this issue we are thrilled to be able to feature some of the NZ hockey girls and a big thank you to Sir Owen Glenn for all the support he gives NZ hockey. We did a fashion shoot with them on top of the Next Generation Gym wearing Ted Baker outfits – what a stunning group of ladies. This sport definitely needs more profiling!
In our travel section we focus on destinations close to NZSydney and Gold Coast. Sydney is culturally vibrant and full of great shops, opera, theatre and so many sensational stores! Meanwhile, the gorgeous Gold Coast is perfect for a quick break and is only 3 hours away from us. It’s my favourite sunny destination for some sun and a quick shop. I can never go past Harbour Town, which showcases some of the best designers at outlet prices! My luggage goes over empty and comes back full!
On pages 50 to 71 check out our latest wedding designers and their beautiful gowns and page 48 gives you some fabulous ideas for Mothers Day. Enjoy this issue and remember to be kind to one another.

When I was told that I’d be test driving the new Renault Clio “NZ’s Hottest New Hatch”, I was over the moon; it would be a huge change to the stunted old car I drive which seems to stall constantly, despite it being an automatic. Excited to pretend I was living the life of luxury for a day, I rocked up to Renault’s head office and was shown the car that I’d be driving, a super sleek cute white Clio model with two chic pink stripes down the front.
It’s no secret that I, and most women out there, aren’t all that experienced with the ins and outs of cars. For us, a car is simply a glamorous means to an end, an item that gets us safely to our summer destination or first date. We know if a car looks good or not, and can definitely vouch for how much boot space there is by how many shopping bags we can fit in the back after a shopping spree.
I eagerly jumped in and was shown every gadget and widget the car has to offer. Instead of taking a key, the car starts by slotting a card in and pushing the stop/start button – now this is fancy! Rearing to go, I head straight for the motorway; I want to see how this baby drives! I notice immediately how many people spot the Renault Clio. Pedestrians, road workers and drivers alike
all take a double take of me driving this super sexy Hot Hatch. I noticed the Clio looks like it only has three door handles, when in fact the back door handles are hidden in the trim by the windows. Super sleek, this made it so much easier piling things in and out of the car as I ran my daily errands, oh lord I love it!
Perhaps my favourite part of the Renault Clio was the 7 inch touch screen media centre. Plugging my iphone in, I blared my music driving down roads and highways. Easy to use, the volume and navigation settings as well as the base would make this the go-to vehicle for road trips during the summer, or even sitting in traffic on dreary Monday mornings.
Barely making a dent in petrol, it was time to return the Renault Clio. This super sexy and stylish car is perfect for any driver, especially women. It’s a car that makes you feel safe and secure while driving, and definitely has that va va voom appeal. So its back to driving my same old car for now, until I can get my own Renault Clio of course!

Innovative Beauty
We believe everyone has their own unique beauty, and our aim is to enhance this, while softening out the negative signs of ageing.” The team of doctors, nurses and dermal therapists at The Face Place MedSpa provide safe, simple and effective, medically proven cosmetic treatments that can be done in a lunch hour.
The leading New Zealand cosmetic clinic is the latest to join the “beauty hub” at the Britomart Precinct with a beautiful new clinic that opened in April. Founder Dr. Catherine Stone started the Face Place in 2001 and she, along with her team, are recognized as industry innovators. The move to Britomart signals a significant change in the cosmetic industry, with the new MedSpa being located at ground level on Customs Street East with highly visible street frontage. This is far different to their location in Vulcan Lane, were cosmetic treatments were highly discrete. Their premises were “hidden away on the second level, to offer the highest levels of confidentiality”, says Catherine.
However, treatments such as Botox are now more socially acceptable and The Face Place are proud to stand for the industry and send a clear message that this is ‘normal’. Though they still have the option available for those who prefer discretion, the demand for this is becoming less and less.
An exciting new treatment The Face Place has developed is Renewed Radiance, a treatment which works to improve skin thickness, texture and luminosity. This innovative treatment is the brainchild of Dr. Catherine, “my favourite thing about this treatment is that you’re using your body’s own platelets and natural healing systems”, says Catherine, “the downtime is minimal compared to similar treatments and because you’re using something that is yours, there is almost no chance of a reaction or over correction.”
Results from this treatment include reduced pore size, bouncier skin and an improvement of the fine crepey skin around the eyes. The improvement is gradual and results are cumulative, so, while people have seen great results with just one treatment, Dr Stone recommends a course of 3-4 treatments over a 4-6 month period, suggesting a top up with a single treatment once or twice a year. Renewed Radiance is a unique treatment that’s been inspired by the great success The Face Place team was experiencing with PRP (Platelet-rich Plasma), a treatment that renews and regenerates tissues using the power of
your own platelets.
PRP has been used effectively for nearly a decade to help repair tendon and ligament problems, it can be used by anyone and is particularly beneficial for those over the age of 25. It helps increase luminosity and thickness of the skin by increasing skin cell activity and can be especially useful for ‘crepey skin’, upper eyelids, neck, hands, décolletage and hair loss. Medically used for over ten years, this treatment takes about two hours (including numbing time) to perform, and is carried out by the expert nurses in conjunction

with skin therapists at The Face Place, who have been highly trained in this technique. This is a safe treatment because it’s using your own platelets – so there’s no chance of an allergic reaction or serious side effects. The results of the treatment are also cumulative, so while you’ll see changes after just one treatment, it is recommended you have three to four treatments that are spaced about six weeks apart, with repeat treatments annually. People who have trialed the new treatments report rave reviews about the quality of their skin, which becomes softer, thicker, tighter and
more luminous, with fewer fine lines. With a reputation for providing high quality treatments with beautiful natural looking results, and loyal clients who regularly fly from all around the world, The Face Place is all about fun and personality This is reflected in the décor of their new clinic, “our new MedSpa is the perfect launching pad for a series of new and innovative concepts we are planning over the next six to twelve months – so watch this space”, says Catherine.
In 2008, Sonya Driver (pictured above, centre) was shaken by her younger sister’s melanoma diagnosis at only thirty years of age. With both Sonya and her sister being previously guilty of lazing in the sun for a golden tan, she became consumed with finding a SAFE sunless tanning alternative for them both. Not only was there no organic tanning product available, Sonya became concerned by the list of toxic ingredients contained in the tanning products on the market. Sonya wasn’t prepared to use them on herself, and definitely wasn’t going to take that risk on her sister’s skin, and subsequent health.
She vowed to make a difference, not only by educating Australians about the presence of toxic chemicals in mainstream beauty products, but by providing a better, safer option. And, in 2010, it was from her tiny kitchen that Eco Tan was born, with the creation of Australia’s very first certified organic, award winning sunless tan – Winter Skin.
From its humble beginnings, Eco Tan’s range of certified organic tanning and body care products are available throughout Australasia, Europe and are soon to to launch across the US.
“The biggest message I always try to get across to consumers is that your skin is your body’s largest organ and a lot of what we put onto it absorbs into the blood stream. The problem is, we apply copious amounts of these products onto our skin on a daily basis. Think about it – we wake up, shower with a body wash, apply moisturizer, make-up, deodorant, perfume and the list goes on!
We don’t think about it, but can you imagine the layers upon layers chemicals that are piling up onto our skin? Chemicals such as Propylene Glycol (anti freeze), parabens (chemical preservatives with potential links to various cancers) and fragrance (which can indicate up to four thousand ingredients, many toxic or carcinogenic) are all commonly used in our day-to-day beauty routine.
So, with all these toxic and carcinogenic ingredients in
Using certified organic skin care – does it really make a difference?
mainstream beauty products, how can you be sure that what you put on your skin is safe and contain no hidden nasties?
The first step is to start researching and have a look at the ingredients on labels. Don’t fall for false marketing claims and pretty packaging, you’ve got to look a little bit closer.” says Sonya. “It may seem daunting to research all ingredients however the more you look, you will start to recognize the same ingredients popping up time and time again.”
The second, always buy certified organic products that contains an organic processor number. This means every raw ingredient has been scrutinized. The storage, packing and labeling MUST be approved by the organic certifier or it will never hit the market as an organic product. It is not as easy as paying a fee. To pass the Australian government organic and biodynamic standards you have to be squeaky-clean.
Since conception, Eco Tan has been breaking records, including being the first Australian company to be certified organic by the Organic Food Chain, and more recently gaining accreditation of Toxic Free by Safe Cosmetics Australia and accredited Cruelty Free by Choose Cruelty Free.
Eco Tan products contain only 100% natural, toxic free, vegan ingredients. Available from selected pharmacies, health food stores and holistic beauty therapists throughout NZ. For stockists, phone Eco Tan NZ on 0800 ORGANIC or visit www.ecotan.co.nz

These Boots are Made for Walking
Christchurch boot manufacturer, Canterbury Sheepskin has an international reputation when it comes to making fashionable hybrids – combining gumboot common sense with sheepskin warmth. Owned by Ian Hunter, Canterbury Sheepskin produces about 200 pairs of slippers and boots in just one day!
Meanwhile, McKinlays footwear has been making shoes since 1879 and as you can imagine, they’ve seen a fair few changes since then. Even though tastes and styles have moved on, one thing has remained constant, high quality footwear that’s made to last.
Canterbury Sheepskin and McKinlays of Dunedin have joined in a unique collaboration to make the Zara Boot. It is a combination of a calf leather hand lasted shoe part, with a sheepskin leg shaft and insole. Incredibly warm and stylish, this boot is for the woman who demands the best of both worlds – luxurious warmth and form fitting style.
With 175 years of footwear manufacturing experience between Canterbury Sheepskin and McKinlays, they’ve come up with a very special boot for those who demand warmth, style and longevity. A focus on quality, traditional techniques and philosophies, the result of this collaboration is a superior product, one that you can trust.

Naturally youthful-looking and glowing
Rejuvenated skin is firm, lifted, hydrated and radiant. Dr. Hauschka’s
Regenerating Care Range was created to address the needs of mature skin, with lightweight yet intensively replenishing formulations. The result is naturally youthful-looking skin with a beautifully healthy glow.
Snowberry... the Labour of Love
Like most woman, founder of Snowberry, Soraya Hendesi, thinks about skin care. Trained as a cosmetician, she spent a lot of time in the company of skin care scientists. She became frustrated by the weird and at times nonsensical information provided by some skin care brands to us as consumers. Soraya believes that there are too many ingredients used in some products because they are cheap or because they feel good, but have no functional benefits and can actually cause more damage!
Soraya became determined to create something better, products that had genuinely high quality, that didn’t compromise skin care, and products that women could actually trust. Thus out of Soraya’s labour of love, she created Snowberry, a line of creams and serums that are full to the brim and have the most effective anti-aging ingredients possible. Soraya thinks of the formulations for Snowberry’s skincare as being like food – nourishment for the skin. She never boasts about a ‘big secret’ or an ‘amazing discovery’, instead, she talks about the balanced combination of natural herbal extracts and the very best that dermatological science can produce.
Skincare that is high quality, that feels wonderful, but actually works, Snowberry products are free of the potentially harmful petrochemicals, parabens, artificial colouring, silicones and Nano particles found in many skincare products. Snowberry is much more than simply natural - the luxurious creams and serums are an exquisite blend of nature and science, and is made to fight the six enemies of radiant skin.
Snowberry also represents Soraya’s commitment to the environment, as no product is tested on animals or contains any animal products. Her challenge to you is to try the products Snowberry has to offer, as she guarantees that women will be able to use Snowberry every day for the rest of her life and for it to do only good! She guarantees that women will see in just a few days how their skin responds and that others will notice too.

Finally, a Non-Injectable Hyaluron Filler that Lasts!
Finesse Face and Body Clinic is delighted to lead the way in a brand new skin treatment that plumps and hydrates the skin.
The popular Remuera clinic is the first in Auckland to introduce SkinCoach Hyaluron non-injectable facial filler. Developed in Germany, this anti-aging treatment has been extremely popular in Europe for the past five years, promising instant results that can last up to three months.
BREAKTHROUGH TECHNOLOGY
Hyaluronic acid is the clear nonallergenic liquid polysaccharide (a natural sugar compound) found in connective, epithelial and neural tissues, reported to be capable of storing up to a thousand times its own weight in water. Hyaluron is widely found between skin cells in the dermal tissue. The more hyaluron that sits between the cells, the greater the amount of water that can be stored. Young and healthy skin consists of about 70% water. The share of hyaluron in the dermal tissue is an essential element for flexibility and elasticity. In part it is the ability of a young skin to store water that creates that beautiful cushioned look. However as we age, the body’s own production of hyaluronic acid decreases, resulting in the development of wrinkles.
Treatments using hyaluronic acid to combat wrinkles have fast been evolving over the past two decades, however until recently; the only way to replace hyaluron was to inject it. Now thanks to the
culmination of research and development in consultation with Dr. Hasert, a member of the International Association for Aesthetic Medicine and Hungarian cosmetic surgeon and anti-aging specialist, Krisztina Kecskemeti, the SkinCoach programme solves this problem.
With specially formulated hyaluron products, a unique massage technique and a low level cold laser, the particles are activated to create a Lego-like structure around the cells and therefore survive much longer. The result is impressive and an immediately visible effect is observed.
THE TREATMENT
The SkinCoach Non-Injectable Filler Facial is a totally painless, calming and relaxing treatment, very much like a well-being facial. A Finesse Face and Body therapist will first apply a gentle peel to the skin to remove any dead skin cells allowing for maximum product penetration. A cool laser is then applied to the skin (face, neck or décolletage). Next, a warmed hyaluron is applied to the skin using a special “tapping massage” technique. You will be amazed at how much hyaluron your skin absorbs. Finally, the cold laser is re-applied to assist with the hyaluron bonding.
Two initial sessions 2-3 weeks apart are recommended (results last up to 3 months) with top-up treatments generally every 6-8 weeks thereafter. Your therapist will assess your skin and explain the process. Finesse recommends the use of special hyaluronic capsules several days before each
“This is a fantastic treatment to have prior to a special event like a wedding. I’m really excited to be able to offer this treatment in New Zealand, especially as it has been available in Australia for over a year now. This amazing treatment will maintain the youthful volume, glow and hydration of your skin.”

These principles are reflected in the boutique’s autumn/winter 2014 collection, described by Nicole as ‘an exciting and strong season with exquisite textures and colours that we’ve never seen before. We love clothes that are luxurious but still have that edginess to them. It’s important that our customers can choose key pieces that are right for their lifestyle. We’re seeing sophisticated winter prints, mixed up textures and layers of fur and leather. At October Reign, we show you how to wear
the clothes so you don’t get them home and then wonder what to do with them.”
Building on this in-store service, Nicole is now offering styling sessions at her client’s homes. She will come and show you how to wear what you already have in a revitalised way. Avoiding ‘wardrobe collapses’, those days when you’re running late and the last thing you need is to struggle to find something to wear, this is a tempting service for everyone and ensures that every day is a fashion success.
Continuing to develop the October Reign brand, Nicole also has a dedicated creative space close to the Osborne Street boutique. Here she can design for the October Reign range of clothing and create pieces that she feels are necessary to complete the season and give more options. It is always an exciting adventure going into October Reign and this season is no exception. Joining the team is Becky, who share’s Nicole’s passion for helping new and existing customers find fashion freedom in that old-fashioned way. Come in and try the clothes on, feel the textures, mix up the prints, and most of all: have fun with fashion!

Weddings at The Grove
Soft lighting, intimate, warm décor and professional but friendly service draws you in from historic St Patrick’s square and into The Grove. Since the doors to The Grove opened in 2004, it has secured itself as one of Auckland’s top restaurants because of its unique approach to both food and service.
Owners Michael and Annette Dearth along with executive head chef Benjamin Bayly have gained outstanding recognition for the creation of its fine dining haven, focusing on serving food that is modern in style whilst using classic French cooking techniques. The wine list at The Grove is extensive and award winning, featuring wines from around the world. Michael and his team are also always available to match the perfect wine to compliment your meal.
Promoting dining that’s accessible, approachable and appeasing, Michael and Benjamin work hard in breaking down the rules of fine dining, wanting to take away the stigma that it is expensive and snooty. They also want to spread the word and promote The Grove as a beautiful wedding venue. They don’t hire room charge and offer a fantastic courtyard flow – guests can come from historic St Patrick’s square, delight in some champagne and canapés
in the courtyard and then move inside for more celebrations. Brides and grooms can be as involved as they like with wedding preparations at The Grove – who offer the option to organize flowers, table settings or music themselves. Being able to seat 60-80 people, The Grove is versatile – tables and chairs lift up from the antique hardwood floors to make room for a dance floor and DJ, staying open until 3 am.
Michael and his team relish in the opportunity to help with everything couples need, even giving guests nine different food options, enabling people to choose what they want to eat at the wedding instead of having set menus. They also pay what they normally would pay to dine at The Grove.
With an abundance of parking options, more people should know about this perfect wedding venue and its fantastic vibe and even better food. Guests love it as it is so versatile and has absolutely everything you need.
The Grove is savvy. They love sharing what’s good in food and wine and opens their doors to everyone showcasing their modern New Zealand cuisine in a warm, friendly atmosphere.

Centrepiece is an event theming and hire company based on the North Shore. This busy team have been decorating events and providing exquisite hire items for Corporate events, private parties and weddings for nearly 10 years. Whether floral or non-floral, a ‘skinny’ budget or all the bells and whistles – theming and decoration specialists Centrepiece has a range of ready-made and custom designed solutions to ensure visually effective events
‘Today, budget cuts mean companies are expected to have the same, high quality look at their events on significantly smaller budgets, but that doesn’t scare us at all; says Centrepiece director Tiffany Cosmann. Centrepiece has the flexibility to adapt to different price points due to variety in the ready-made range they hold. Centrepiece has in-house florists who provide large floral displays, stand
exhibition arrangements, table centrepieces and presentation bouquets for events. They also provide weekly flowers to some of Auckland’s top hotels.
Cosmann say Centrepiece sees itself as a “support service” for event managers’, able to adapt to short notice requests, a growing challenge for event planners today. It’s incredible what we can deliver at the drop of a hat, whether it’s 10 days out form a major days out from a major event or 24 hours’ notice says Cosmann. ‘We have a team of elves who can pull out all the stops and produce last minute theming solutions, even for 200 tables. People in the industry call on us for service delivery because they know we have a reputation for seamless installation every time. Around 80% of Centrepiece’s business is the corporate market, while wedding hire is a separate dedicated department. ‘A lot of people don’t realise that we deliver all over the
country with our mobile road cases (please delete on wheels), and we also do a lot of product launches in addition to regular corporate events.
“Only a small amount of our corporate designs are on our website so we encourage existing and potential clients to make an appointment to view Centrepiece’s dedicated showroom in Wairau on Auckland’s North Shore.” The showroom features a selection of readymade centrepieces and we can produce custom designs creating solutions to suit a specific event brief. Centrepiece works closely with other event suppliers such as venues to provide alternatives such as LED centrepiece options, answering a growing demand for an alternative to lit candles, with some heritage style venues not allowing any open flame.

Why Women Don’t Bulk Up When Weight Training
By Melissa-Anne Smit from 101 Fitness
For women, the main concern in lifting heavy weights is the fear of developing big bulging muscles. A bulging physique looks great on a guy, but for ourselves, we want to see a slim and well-toned physique (and it’s no secret what men like to see). Luckily there are biological factors that work in favor of what both genders want.
Firstly, women tend to have smaller skeletal structures than men – we are on average shorter with smaller builds. Biologically the female skeletal structure is not conducive to supporting big muscle and hence more likely to build longer, more slender muscles to fit this skeletal structure.
Secondly, hormones drive just about every system and process in our bodies. During muscle growth for example, testosterone and estrogen are the significant drivers of the type of muscles produced. There are other factors too
but for today, let’s keep things simple. Testosterone = bulky muscles and estrogen = slim muscles. Scientific studies show that men produce around ten times more testosterone than women so we simply do not naturally have the testosterone levels to elicit an excessive or bulky increase in muscle mass.
When women use heavy weights, they will tend to increase absolute strength whilst increasing muscle mass or size only slightly. However if you don’t stimulate your muscles you will find that they will get smaller and your strength will decrease as well. I could go on about how muscles support joints, the vertebrae in your back and neck (ie reduces back pain) and how toned functional muscles support, improves and eases your everyday activities.
But for me, the best part about muscle is that they are a significant calorie burner in the body, that’s why an increase in
your muscle mass will help you burn more calories. With a calorie correct diet you will start to shed unwanted fat.
Challenging your muscles is also a great way to activate your body’s natural defense against “degenerative diseases” – things like osteoporosis, arthritis etc and it helps to improve your overall quality of life.
So, biologically, women will not build bulky muscles but will get significant positive results across a range of biological factors from high intensity weight workouts.

Cats (felids) have been on earth for about 25 Million Years. The domestic cat evolved from Panthera Lineage (lions, jaguars, leopards, tigers) over 3 million years ago. Cats, including domestic cats, are obligate carnivores. They must eat animal flesh and organs to survive. Cuts of meat aren’t enough. In natural life cats would eat all of their prey (head to toe) to obtain balanced nutrition. Cats’ bodies are designed to eat and process meat; they have a powerful specialised jaw, teeth adapted for tearing and shredding meat, a short digestive tract and stomach acids to facilitate the digestion of meat only. They even obtain minerals by digesting animal bones.

drink much water naturally, let alone to compensate for a high carb, dry diet. Many cat owners are now concerned about the increase of diseases in cats such as Urinary Tract Disease.
Modern day dry cat food is mostly grain. Many list a meat as the first ingredient but it’s the following ingredients like Corn, Wheat, Gluten, Soy, Cereal and Barley that make up the bulk of the food. Dry cat food is also extremely low in moisture, less than 10%. In natural life cats would get the majority of their water ingestion from their prey (i.e. a mouse is over 70% moisture and less than 8% carbohydrate). Cats have a low thirst drive and do not

Dreamy Jewellery
Hand Crafted Jewellery forged from an ancient heart”. Alison Greenhorn, a Jewellery designer from Auckland has always been an artist, studying Graphic Design and Fine Art Printmaking in South Africa. Now living in the green lands of Aotearoa, New Zealand, Alison began her hand at Jewellery making a few years ago. With no grand plan in mind or any idea that her craft would become what it is today, she started making a few pieces that she thought would sell. Slowly this passion and enthusiasm developed into a larger venture: Fish Dreaming Jewellery.
The name Fish Dreaming was a name Alison chose some time before she began making Jewellery. She has always liked the idea of using the image of a fish, which is her zodiac sign, and she loves the idea of being able to dream of new ideas without boundaries – having freedom to do anything. Fish Dreaming Jewellery is inspired from various sources and is a culmination of ideas drawn from ancient treasures, talismans, tribal and medieval relics and the cosmos.
When asked what her favourite kind of Jewellery was to make or wear, Alison admits that she loves all the different styles she makes so struggles to pick just one. She puts the same amount of energy into every piece and wears a lot of them to see how they work. Most of the pieces at Fish Dreaming Jewellery are one of a kind and Alison becomes completely absorbed in the process of creating. Each piece of Jewellery has been created and assembled by Alison herself, who designs each component.
The Jewellery at Fish Dreaming Jewellery is eclectic, whimsical, earthy, poetic, original and romantic. Alison makes what she likes – exquisite Jewellery that is beautiful, meaningful and tactile. Each piece is influenced by Alison’s years of extensive travel; observing colour, shapes, symbolism and cultures – all absorbed through a thirsty eye.

The Big Conundrum
Property
issues that develop in blended families – 6 legal tips
Larger, blended families are now commonplace, whether it is as a result of a second marriage or simply a couple moving in together. There are some important legal complexities to consider before you enter into any new relationship. Here are six legal tips:
Resolve matters from earlier relationships... If you have left a marriage or relationship, then you must tie down all those legal loose ends before committing to a new relationship. You must record an agreement about property matters in writing with each of you having an independent lawyer advising you.
Discuss it... Don’t get caught up in the excitement of a new relationship without having a serious discussion with your partner about how your respective property is to be treated from day one and also what happens if you separate in the future. Discuss what each of you own and intend to bring to the new relationship to share and agree what should be kept separate. A session with your family lawyer can assist since it helps to have an independent third party ask the hard questions.
Record your agreement in writing... There are a number of different options available. Most common is a “prenuptial” which you should sign as soon as the relationship starts, ideally before “moving in” together. This is a record of what you wish to keep as your separate property and what you are prepared to share. To be binding, each of you will need to be separately advised by a lawyer.
Follow the agreement... Once you sign a prenuptial agreement, follow the terms of it. Think carefully about keeping your separate property genuinely separate because once it becomes mingled with relationship property, it may be subject to equal division with your partner.
Review it... As time passes, your original intentions may no longer be relevant. Review any settlement agreements on a regular basis and have a discussion with your partner about it.
Wills... Review and update your will. Think about what happens if one of you dies during the relationship and how it affects your children from previous relationships.
Following these simple rules may avoid a costly dispute later. It is better to have the discussion and get things documented by a competent lawyer early on in the piece.
If you need help with Relationship Property problems, Prenuptial Agreements (Section 21 - Contracting out Agreements) as they affect your marriage or defacto relationship (or second marriage and blended families) then give us a call. We have years of experience and can help you through what can sometimes be a difficult and confusing time.
Let’s be clear: I take serious pride in my wardrobe. Uniform black hangers sit finger-spaced apart on stand-alone metal rails, holding a sea of grays, browns and navies. Everything is arranged by garment, and within that, by colour. I’m meticulous about the details of my clothing; button down collars, triple stitched shirts. I have a penchant for street-wear too - I own several wildlyprinted Adidas raincoats, a couple of White Mountaineering socks, even a Bape umbrella. Amidst all this impeccably made menswear, though, there’s never been a suit. The closest thing in my wardrobe to a suit is a brown woolen blazer, slightly illfitting, hardly formal by any means. But I’m in my mid twenties; I’ve never had much call for formality in my dress. Until recently, I’d only ever needed suits for two different occasions: weddings and funerals. I’d rented suits from warehouses full of cheap satin bow ties and polyester vests, and they’d always been huge and uncomfortable, falling off my shoulders and dragging at my heels. So the concept of a made-to-measure, completely custom suit, which James Loft could offer me, really was intriguing. As someone who has a vested interested in what fills his wardrobe, in particular the niche market for the street-wear side of fashion, it would be as much about the experience and being educated as it was a fitting - I was curious to see whether or not a suit could mix in with my general wear, and more importantly, whether I would ever find a suit I could love like the rest of my clothes.
It was off to James Loft to find out.
Upon first meet at the store on bustling, inner-city O’Connell Street, we discussed what I wanted out of the suit. My options (narrowed down) were a traditional fit, a slim fit, or “fashionable” fit, in their words. I was promised two of these styles would be more easy to wear and incorporate into everyday wear, the third being something a little more tailored, for one in attendance of today’s fashion events. Before he began fitting me for the suit, James of James Loft explained that the suit should be, above all, comfortable; I shouldn’t feel like my body was itching to get out. It is, of course, he reminded me, a garment made to fit your frame exactly, unlike an everyday off the rack item of clothing. This surprised me, though - I figured even a bespoke suit that fit me perfectly would be a little stiff in the arm and leg, a little scratchy. But like I said, I’ve always worn poorly fitted, cheap rental suits, the wool of which had draped the arms and hugged the hips of hundreds of boys and men before me (I remember renting a suit for my school ball, and being more interested in what I could hang around my neck than the fit itself. This was the nineties, all the fabrics were shiny, and suits at that time were for peacocking rather than flying subtly under the radar.)
I’ve known for a while that whatever you’re wearing, fit is the most important part: at 54 kg, I wear a 27-inch pair of jeans, and I pretty much have to tailor every item of clothing I purchase, or it swallows me whole. So if there were ever a reason made-to-measure suits exist, I am probably that reason.
After picking the fabric from a range of sample books and styles off the rack, I chose to tailor a casual suit (ie. not black), one that could be worn for more everyday rather than special occasion. Out of the options of a traditional, slim or fashionable suit, I chose slim, which I figured would be a good choice for everyday wear. James fitted me into a suit off the rack, pinned two or three sizes smaller at the waist, down the leg and at the ankle, sitting narrow in the body but without restrictions as I moved my arms. It was now time for the custom touches.
When each stitch becomes a customizable option when creating your own bespoke suit, the importance in details is what differentiates one from another. My suit jacket was obviously cut extremely narrow, the suit jacket differing from a traditional cut with hidden pockets and subtle tucked-in flaps. I was offered several different options for button layout, a classic two, a more traditional three, a double breasted option, and one I wasn’t aware of called a ‘three button row to two’, meaning a classic two button look on the outside with a third button sewn on the reverse, for wearing the jacket as more of an outer piece, with a reversible collar. I went for the three button row to two. The buttons on James Loft’s suits are drilled with tapered holes, meaning they sit straight and button loosely, and they were all hand-finished. I chose a natural horn in turtleshell colouring, again trying to keep the suit as casual as possible. If I thought I knew anything about fit before, I was mistaken: James Loft gave me customizable options I wasn’t even aware existed. The suit pants finished with a cuff (40mm to be precise) and a shank button cuff, meaning the inside cuff was held with a hidden button which left a free floating cuff rather than one sewn shut. By nature, I prefer my pants to sit above my shoes, so with this suit we decided that it too would finish at the ankle, the intention of which was to be worn either showing sock or boots. When I had decided on each aspect of the suit, I stood at awkward angles in front of the mirror, trying not to let the pins showing the temporary outline jab my limbs. I must admit, I was skeptical. How could this mass of pins and the suit of a much larger man ever be something I could wear with ease?
It was two weeks until the final fitting, until I saw the suit. My suit. Nestled in a garment bag, hung on a timber hanger, there it was - totally free of pins and clips, every detail I’d handpicked lovingly executed. Fitted once more, any misconceptions I’d had vanished. It felt at first feel like comfort clothing, like I shouldn’t look half as good as I felt. I looked in the mirror, admiring how the jacket hugged my shoulders, how smart and current the pant cuff looked. And these pants fit. There was
no belt required, no extra cuffs at the bottom of the leg. The jacket was unlike my old brown woolen one, allowing virtually unlimited movement for the everyday. James ran over the finer details with me. He demonstrated how the three button row to two worked, and how the collar was to be worn when buttoned. How the tapered buttonholes allowed the buttons to lay flat against the body, and how it held the jacket in place with little strain. Every point was a balance of form and function, and I couldn’t hide my impressed face. Here was a suit I could wear day to day, could mix with my casual, street wear flavor items and really look, and feel, the part. I truly hadn’t thought it was possible.
But let’s be clear: I take serious pride in my wardrobe. Which is why my brand new, custom fitted James Loft suit now has a proud, finger-spaced home amongst the grays, browns and navies in my wardrobe.
Anything is Possible in the Concierge World
Typically, the word concierge is linked to hotels, but it’s now emerging rapidly in other fields. A concierge is typically a ‘go-to’ person and helps relieve pressures of busy day to day lives.
The Personal Concierge Company is owned by Jenny Peploe, is based in Auckland, and offers personalised concierge services. Typical clients are people that are just too busy, that either don’t have time to do these things or simply choose not to. “There is a huge demand for concierge services as people’s lives have become so
busy and they’re finding that they have less and less time for things they need to do.”
No two clients are the same and the type of services personal concierges provide can be very diverse. They do everything from getting and delivering groceries, picking up prescriptions, drycleaning and getting fresh flowers. They can meet your guests at the airport and bring them home, they can return rental items, research holidays, make reservations, and help find chefs/cleaners/nannies. They can help de-clutter a room, or a whole house, help with moves, organize events or
parties – really, the list is endless!
For individuals that use a concierge service, they see it as a method to free up time, allowing them to focus on other things – being with their family, relaxation time, recreational activities or community activities. Anything is possible in the concierge world, with The Personal Concierge Company being a one stop shop for virtually anything a client needs assistance with.

New Suzuki Crossover Model Thinks Big!
Designers realised that in line with consumer demands they had to think “bigger” when conceiving the new Suzuki SX4 S-Cross. The highly practical “C” class segment S-Cross represents a new departure for Suzuki with its growing number of global strategic models. Motorists want the benefit of good interior and load space while retaining low running costs and keen driving manners.
Yasushi Sasaki, chief engineer on the S-Cross project, faced the task of blending the attributes of a passenger car with the qualities of a Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV). “We gave the new SX4 S-Cross the internationally acclaimed handling of the Swift and made no compromise in four wheel drive performance,” he said.
At 4,300 mm, the S-Cross is 150 mm longer, fractionally wider, slightly lower and the 2,600 mm wheelbase is 100 mm longer than the smaller SX4. Yet despite the larger dimensions, the turning circle for the S-Cross is actually tighter, making the car easily manageable in urban and city driving.
Distinctive Suzuki SUV styling
Suzuki combined its small car expertise with SUV practicality, giving the S-Cross distinctive styling, class-leading space for passengers and luggage, advanced optional four-wheel-drive performance and excellent fuel economy. The car also boasts one of the lowest CO2 emissions in the segment.
Yasushi Sasaki said, “Daily life - and with it, what is expected of a car - has become far more complex today than it was just a few years ago. Whether it is a family outing
to the seaside, a weekend shopping tour in the city or a quick sporting trip, tackling rough terrain and bumpy country roads or smoothly cruising down the motorway - the SX4 S-Cross complements all the needs of living perfectly.
Styling elements of the Suzuki Swift Sport, Kizashi and Splash are combined in the front end appearance, while the roof slopes gently downwards towards the rear. There are smooth contours, integrated roof rails, side under garnishes, rear under garnish and smart wheel arch mouldings.
The new model is manufactured at the Magyar Suzuki plant in Hungary and has already gone on sale in Europe. It is being progressively introduced in many other territories, including New Zealand and Australia, Asia, the Middle East and Latin America as a world strategic model.
Magyar Suzuki plays an important role as Suzuki’s European production centre and the launch of the SX4 S-Cross marks the start of an expansion programme in which the company will extend its exports to more countries and increase production volume. The initial S-Cross production and sales target is 100,000 units for the first year.
Perfect combination for New Zealand needs
Gary Collins, General Manager of Automobile Marketing for Suzuki New Zealand, explained the new S-Cross was far more than just a crossover vehicle. “It’s the perfect fusion of family-friendliness, safety, performance and emotion and delivers outstanding driving pleasure,” he said.
The new Suzuki was already earning praise in Europe for its excellent fuel
economy, outstanding boot space, high standard of finish and compliant ride with good body control, said Collins. “Not only do independent critics like the deft, balanced handling, they also see the S-Cross as very good value for money.”
5-star Euro NCAP safety rating
The S-Cross has been awarded a 5-star Euro NCAP safety rating, making it one of Europe’s safest cars. It did particularly well in pedestrian protection, and scored a maximum rating overall, performing well in adult protection, child safety, pedestrian protection and safety assist.
Priced to be competitive
The new S-Cross range offers outstanding value given the increase in size and specifications over the current SX4. GLX manual at $27,990 includes 16 inch aluminium alloy wheels and Bluetooth capability, with the CVT adding $2,000 to this recommended retail price.
The $32,990 LTD version with CVT adds satellite navigation and reversing camera, and the 16 inch alloys are replaced by 17 inch polished rims.
In the AWD trim, the $30,990 S-Cross GLX manual has 16 inch alloys and Bluetooth, and with CVT is $32,990. The range-topping AllGrip LTD CVT with 17 inch alloys, satellite navigation and reversing camera is $35,990. All models come complete with 5 year, unlimited kilometre roadside assistance and a 5 year / 100,000km warranty package. All these prices exclude on road costs. www.suzuki.co.nz

Number One with ONEPURE
Born and raised in Auckland, professional golfer Michael Hendry started playing golf at the young age of 12 as a member of the Pupuke Golf Club. He’s now become a busy golf professional, competing on the world stage. Eye Magazine caught up with Michael to talk about his sponsorship with ONEPURE Water, what motivates him and what he likes to eat and drink.
What keeps you motivated and driven?
Golf is a game that you can never master. I love the endless pursuit of improvement. Seeing a particular part of my game go from weakness to a strength is hugely satisfying and motivating, and somewhat addictive!
What is your go-to snack to eat on the run?
Generally a protein bar or a piece of fruit. Lately I’ve taken to beef jerky as it is high in protein and is a nice change from the norm.
What do you have for breakfast that
leaves you feeling energized for the day?
Eggs! Whether they’re scrambled, poached or in an omelet it gives great long lasting energy.
What do you drink before and after you play golf?
Most tournaments have water or sports drinks available, so before I’ll drink half a bottle of One Pure Water and half a bottle of sports drink. Afterwards I’ll drink a sports drink to get some sugars back in my system.
You have a partnership with ONEPURE water... what do you love about ONEPURE Water?
Every drop of ONEPURE starts as rain or snow and travels down through the forest through streams and river until it slowly collects in the rich aquifer deep underground This amazing journey (which can take up to 50 years) enriches the water with a perfect balance of minerals and cleanses it of harmful pollutants, in an easy to grab drink bottle, the clarity and taste of ONEPURE is one of a kind.
What is your guilty pleasure snack or drink?
You can’t beat a frozen coke on a hot day! That mixed with a packet of M&M’s in front of a good movie and you’ve just about found perfection!
www.onepure.co.nz
ONEPURE’s philosophy is simple... to curate the world’s best water and supply it to everyone who values the benefits that this water brings. Most of the world’s bottled water comes from the Northern Hemisphere, where 95% of the world’s pollution is.
ONEPURE water comes from New Zealand, at the bottom of the southern hemisphere, and as far away from the polluted north as it is possible to get. It originates from a pristine underground aquifer and using the cleanest, simplest means possible, is bottled at source.

Mr. Opinionator
It’s a hotchpot edition this quarter.
Iain Banks died recently. Iain M Banks died as well. I’d read all his sci-fi novels, so when it became public that he was dying, I decided to read his first novel: The Wasp Factory. It was insanely funny at times, as the narrator’s brother was completely nutso and took delight in setting fire to things. He ended up attacking the family home with sheep bombs. If you can imagine Dr River Song’s saying: “Spoiler”, you’ll understand why I can’t say any more. Anyway, Iain M Banks is kipping on his back and I’ll miss his “Culture” novels, in particular.
Why don’t you have a go at one of his Culture novels? The Culture is, according to Wikipedia: … characterised as being a post-scarcity society (meaning that its advanced technologies provide practically limitless material wealth and comforts for everyone for free, having all but abolished the concept of possessions), by having overcome almost all physical constraints on life (including disease and death) and by being an almost totally egalitarian, stable society without the use of any form of force or compulsion, except where necessary to protect others.
Minds, powerful artificial intelligences, have an important role to play in this society. They [use their exceptional powers] for the benefit of all. [Culture novels] therefore, mostly deal with people at the fringes of the Culture: diplomats, spies, or mercenaries; those who interact with other civilisations, and who do the Culture’s dirty work in moving those societies closer to the Culture ideal, sometimes by force.
I’ll add that some of the Minds are housed inside huge spaceships and the like, in which billions of people live. There’s a fair amount of humour in these books, not least the names some of the Minds give their ships. My two favourites are: Lapsed Pacifist and I Said, I’ve Got A Big Stick. Anyway, off you go and read “Consider Phlebas”. After that, “The Algebraist” (not truly a Culture novel but in the same vein) and you’ll be hooked. When “The Opinionator” started, it was simply a way for me to increase my literary fame, get all sorts of irritations off my chest and be paid many hundreds of thousands of dollars at the same time. My poverty-stricken anonymity speaks volumes for my success. One irritation for this edition is how people will change if there’s money involved. I start with this: for many decades, good old Uncle This and Auntie That (childless, Your Honour) have promised their nephew and niece (brother and sister) that their much loved beach property will be left to nephew and niece. Over all these decades, brother and sister and their offspring have had many joyous holidays at the beach property and the cousins have become close. Uncle and Auntie had mirror wills, in which they left everything to the survivor and, on the death of the survivor, it all went to their beloved nephew and niece. Uncle dies; Auntie gets a bit frail. Before you can say “inheritance”, Auntie is helped to change her will and everything is left to the nephew – oy gevay!
Auntie dies; brother tells his only sibling that it’s awfully bad luck but Auntie left it to me and, no, I’m not sharing.
There’s a beach property not a million miles from Papamoa. This beach property was owned by one of a number of siblings and used as the family holiday base by the other siblings and their families. As in the first example, the cousins grew up with each other and familial love bloomed. A long time ago, the owner sibling died and he left it to one of his siblings. That sibling vowed and declared it was most certainly not his property; he said he held it in trust so that family holidays would continue as normal. Hell, he’d transfer it into his name and a sibling’s name so that there were 2 decision-makers and not just
him. Probably by oversight and unbeknown to everyone else, the transfer to the other sibling did not take place but all the siblings and cousins, for decades, continued to go there for their holidays and they maintained it and contributed to the outgoings etc. GFC - financial reverses – “Nyah, nyah, it wasn’t put into trust – ‘For Sale’”. I mean, come on! Then, there’s the Family Protection Act. This allows the Court to change an otherwise valid will where it thinks that the ex-parrot has failed in his/her moral duty to a restricted class of relatives (mostly children). I’ll bet that you three readers out there (I buy two copies) can think of times when perfectly valid wills have been changed by a Court and you scratch your heads in puzzlement. Now, I’m a bit ambivalent on the Family Protection Act. There are times when it’s needed – three kids, no disentitling behaviour, all in the same boat financially, mother becomes FITH and leaves everything to one of the kids. It makes sense for the Court to say that the mother “failed in her moral duty” to the kids she left out. Yet, when the mother leaves out the two kids for perfectly valid reasons (at a personal level) and even leaves a note explaining why, there’s still a huge risk that the mother’s wishes will be overridden by a Court on the application of one or both of the disaffected kids. I know three brothers whose mother punished one of the brothers by leaving him out of her will; sucks to be her because, when she died, the two beneficiary brothers invited the third brother to share equally with them. Now, I just can’t see why you wouldn’t but
it’s a rare event when people share money, even among siblings who have had good relationships for all the years. In the end, this is what I think: there is a clear need for New Zealand society/the law to have such a relief mechanism, so my issues are simply with the way the Courts deal with some cases. When I get to that point, I have to concede that the differences are simply my personal viewpoint versus that of a Judge and, in the end, albeit unlikely, I might just be wrong.
My last bleat for this edition is that I have the sense that, in criminal law, “the System” would rather rely on arcane rules of law and/or process than get to the heart of the matter and find justice. It all starts with the proposition that a jury of one’s peers is going to be reliable, for the most part, in determining the facts and applying them to the law. I deny the allegations of arrogance which will be levelled at me as soon as I say that, according to the Bell Curve on IQ, 50% of any jury is going to have an IQ under 100 (scarily, 13.5% of the jury is going to be between 70 and 85 points). That 50% of <100 is going to be increased by virtue of the fact that there are a number of intelligent people who do not have to sit on juries. Successful people (implicitly clever’ish), generally, can make a case that their business will fail if they have to be on a jury for a week and can be excused (sole-trader plumbers, for example, who are clever types). Lawyers are excused by law (I’m not conceding they are clever, overall, but the odd one might be). So, it seems to me, the average jury is unlikely to be averaging even 100 IQ points,
and we are putting people’s lives in their hands … aieeeeee!
Back to my point: a conviction by a jury is not something in which I would have absolute confidence, which would lead to the need to have relief mechanisms where things are found to have gone wrong. Yet the “System” would rather poke needles in its figurative eyes than admit fault. For my money, I think we should do our best to live by the maxim that it’s better that nine guilty men should go free rather than have one innocent man in prison. Innocent men jailed include Arthur Allan Thomas, Scott Watson (The Sounds Murders) and the Ellis guy in Christchurch (whom I admire greatly for his resolute refusal to bow down for the sake of a year or so in jail). Watson is still in prison because the System isn’t big enough to admit fault (yes, I know there have been enquiries up the wazoo but it’s a flawed conviction). You’ll notice no reference to Lundy, since I suppose an impending retrial takes it out of the range of comment but I do look forward to hearing the evidence to the effect that he could have driven the 300 kms Wellie – Palmy – Petone in under 3 hours and, in that time, managed all the other things (double murder, shagging around with the computer, faking the break-in, running from car to house to car and changing in and out of overalls or whatever). An example of how things should go is the acquittal of Ewen Macdonald; most people think he did it but there wasn’t enough admissible evidence. I’ll live with that but I find it hard to live with poor old Scott Watson’s being in the slammer.
Hockey New Zealand
Hockey is a fast, exciting and global game with over 69,000 registered New Zealanders from grass roots to an elite level. The sport has seen a 15% increase in participation in the last three years, plus over 40,000 children have participated in the ActivePost Small Sticks programme in primary schools in the last two years. The Black Sticks Men and Women commit to a heavy schedule of competition. Each team plays approximately 35 tests per year, some hosted in New Zealand like the recent women’s Hawke’s Bay Festival and others offshore like this year’s FIH World Cup (Holland, 31 May—15 June) and the Commonwealth Games (Glasgow, 23 July - 3 August). The Black Sticks Men, ranked sixth, are coached by Colin Batch and the captain is Dean Couzins. The Black Sticks Women, ranked fifth, are coached by Mark Hager and the captain is Kayla Whitelock.

Healthy with Hockey
Eye Magazine caught up with four of our favourite New Zealand’s women’s Black Sticks players to find out a bit more about what makes them tick
What’s your career highlight?
Sam Charlton: Making the team for the 2012 Olympic Games
Gemma Flynn: Playing in the London Olympics semi-final
Michaela Curtis: Being selected in the Black Sticks in 2012
Rosie Keddell: Being selected in the Black Sticks team to debut against India in 2012
Heels or Hockey Shoes?
Sam: While I love getting the opportunity to wear heels, my feet just can’t handle it for longer than a couple of hours. I’m much more comfortable in a snug pair of runners.
Gemma: Wearing heels is always a nice change from our hockey shoes
Michaela: Playing hockey doesn’t give me a lot of time to wear heels, although I don’t mind wearing them, but hockey shoes are usually a lot more comfier!
Rosie: I’d love to say heels but realistically, I can’t last in them for longer than a couple of hours!
What’s your favourite New Zealand designer?
Sam: I love Karen Walker and their selection of eyewear, but I also really like Liam Bowden who’s the designer of Deadly Ponies bags, they’re all made in New Zealand and are so beautiful
Gemma: Karen Walker Jewellery
Michaela: I’d have to say Karen Walker as they have such a huge range of products, I love their Jewellery especially!
Rosie Keddell, Michaela Curtis, Sam Charlton & Gemma Flynn.
Rosie: I love a huge range of designers but my style is relatively casual so Commoners alike offers a great range of basic apparel. I’m also a huge fan of Miss Crabb; her dresses are my absolute favourite and can be worn in so many ways.
What’s your best workout/weight loss tip?
Sam: As much as everyone would love to hear some quick fix or miracle tip, unfortunately I’ve learnt that there simply isn’t one. If you want to get in shape you have to put in the effort. They key to a great body is a well balanced diet, LOTS of water and regular exercise.
Gemma: Being fit and healthy is about making lifestyle choices that enable you to eat well and exercise on a regular basis. Eating a balanced diet with plenty of water and finding a type of exercise that you enjoy can do with friends and family will keep you
motivated and make it fun.
Michaela: Exercise regularly, eat all the right foods and work hard. You only get out what you put in!
Rosie: Working out, staying fit and losing weight all comes down to hard work. There is no quick fix (that I’ve ever discovered) so for me it’s all about eating the right foods and exercising regularly.
What’s your advice for young players?
Sam: There are no shortcuts to a place worth going.
Gemma: Always try your best in training and games, be competitive and enjoy yourself.
Rosie: “Train hard and be good to your parents” (Mark Hager).
Michaela: Always give the best you can and train hard.
60 Seconds with a Celeb
It always amazes me that the wealthy and generous people in New Zealand get trashed by certain elements of the media. Their small mindedness and judgemental attitude are counter productive. One of the most generous men in New Zealand is Sir Owen Glenn, and people forget how much he does for us. Born in Calcutta, India and educated in various high schools in the Himalayas, Sir Owen immigrated to New Zealand with his family at age 11. Here, after obtaining his school certificates at Mount Roskill Grammar School, he was forced to leave to begin working.
Although he spends much of his time overseas, Sir Owen still regards himself as a New Zealander. In 2005, Sir Owen contributed NZ$7.5 million to The University of Auckland Business School.
Believed to be the largest private donation in New Zealand educational history, this was a landmark philanthropic contribution in New Zealand education. Shortly after this, Sir Owen donated an additional NZ$500,000 to establish the Barry Spicer and Owen G Glenn PhD Scholarships.
Since this time Sir Owen has supported a range of other causes in New Zealand;the AUT-Millennium Institute of Sport,Alumni Medical Research into cancer, and New Zealand Hockey. He initiated and funded a number of projects in Otarafocus on sport, education and family wellbeing. A NZ$1 million donation to the government for reconstruction after the earthquakes in Christchurch. In the Kalimpong district of India, the Glenn Family Foundation continues to rescue children from exploitation and abuse. The GFF also created the Model Village Programme which helps local villages with water, sanitation, education, health, community organization and economic development. In India, the Glenn Family Foundation continues to support the rescue of children from exploitation and abuse and village development in the Kalimpong region. His ongoing commitment is in support of the Glenn Family Foundation into violence against women and abuse against children- known as the Glenn Inquiry We are very excited that we are able to
profile NZ Hockey in this issue and support the work of the Glenn Family foundation, we caught up with Sir Owen and this is what he had to say...
-Kate Voice, Production Manager
What work does the Glenn Family Foundation do for NZ Hockey?
The GFF gives financial and moral support to hockey as follows:
• NZ$1 million into an endorsement fund
• NZ$300,000 over three years for the under 21 and under 18 National Squads to attend world wide tournaments, promotion of the Little Sticks
• Re presentations with the global body to bring an international tournament to New Zealand
• Re presentations to develop an arena for world tournaments at Rosedale Park in Auckland
Do you watch the games?
I attend world tournaments as and where my schedule allows; India, UK, Holland and New Zealand to date.
Have you played Hockey before?
I played hockey from 1954-1974 from a school boy to tournament level in India, New Zealand, Australia, Hong Kong and Fiji.
What have been your biggest inspirations?
For me it is seeing youth mature into and realize their full potential.
Highlight of the year so far?
My philanthropic work in India- rescuing women and children in West Bengal, India, from domestic slavery and forced prostitution, establishing multiple learning centres/teachers in many rural areas in North East India. The first goal is the creation of 30+ such centres.
Best advice you have been given?
By my father, “Son, do what you believe to be right and let other people reconcile with their conscience.”
I hear the AUT Millennium Sir Owen Glenn National Aquatics Centre will be open next year. What is next for the
Sir Owen Glenn
Glenn Family Foundation?
The Sir Owen Glenn National Aquatic Centre is scheduled to be formally opened in May 2015 in Albany. The GFF is withdrawing from its grand plan to help 20+ underprivileged regions in New Zealand. Otara was the first project, and 12 different initiatives were financed by the GFF. The continuous acrimony and witchhunt by some elements of the press has persuaded the Trustees to withdraw from supporting NZ projects in favor of Asia, where it is more appreciated.
The exception is the Glenn Inquiry into violence against women and abuse against children. Over NZ$3 million has already been committed and a report and blueprint for the future is to be presented to all political parties in May.
If you were Prime Minister for the day, what would be the first thing you would change?
As Prime Minister for a day, I would introduce a code of ethics into the journalist profession. This would be a step in the right direction towards ensuring all citizens have true, honest and responsible reporting of all facts, not angled toward sensationalism, innuendo, distortion and imagined scandal by a minority of those who lack the intestinal fortitude and integrity to look beyond their self-interest.

Celebrate Mid Winter Christmas at Riccarton Park
Mid Winter “Christmas at Riccarton Park” will be a popular choice for Saturday June 21st. The Club has a range of hospitality options in place. Winter racing it may be but the Club also does plenty to make the welcome inviting. “We are fortunate at Riccarton Park that we can offer both stunning views of the racing but also plenty of warm rooms and sheltered areas to enjoy the experience”, says Marketing Manager Chris Rowe.
Then it’s all on at Riccarton Park for the Grand National Racing carnival in August with the Club gearing up again for their big winter carnival. Feature flat race over the three days is the Group 3, EstarOnline Winter Cup on Saturday August 2nd, Wednesday August 6th is the Hospitality New Zealand-Canterbury Grand National Hurdles while the Racecourse Hotel Motor Lodge Grand National Steeplechase, the 140th running of which will take place on August 9th, highlights the third day of the Carnival. Rowe says the racedays are part of a big week for many visitors. “There are plenty of other activities in the city and of course there is always the option of the ski fields as well. We can even assist with accommodation so Christchurch is the place to be in August!”

Emma Stenbeck
New Zealand born singer EMMA STENBECK has released her first single ‘SOMETHING ABOUT YOU’. It premiered on the 4th of April and has already made its way into the top 100 in the New Zealand iTunes chart.
With its strong beat and moody feel, this track is definitely something new for the New Zealand music scene. The vocals shine through with Emma’s smooth and expressive voice and the melody really sticks.
Emma discovered her love for music and singing at a very young age and her dream of having a career in music grew from there. Having performed around Auckland for various events over the recent years, she has now taken the first steps towards becoming a professional recording artist.
“I am so excited to finally share SOMETHING ABOUT YOU with all of my amazing fans and followers. I’ve been working for awhile now on quite a few different tracks and it has been an exciting process – it truly is a dream come true.” Emma explains enthusiastically.

Layer Upon Layer
One’s home interiors are a lifelong project, evolving with the gradual addition of small details and inspirations that allow your look to develop over time.
Keeping things simple and introducing just a couple of selectively chosen fabrics is all that is needed to start the transformation of your living space according to interior designer Jenny Marshall.
“You don’t need to re-cover everything. You can choose one beautifully made textile and have a few cushions made – an interior is always a work in progress.
“It’s all about slowly adding layers to a space, which gives it depth. This is why textiles are so important to me because you can keep adding over time to enhance spaces.”
Jenny sources many of the fabrics she uses from Atelier Textiles – New Zealand’s leading boutique importer of the world’s finest luxury furnishings. Atelier’s Mt Eden showroom features more than 30,000 luxury textiles that designers and their clients use to cover their walls and furniture or have made into curtains or throws – the options are endless.
Atelier’s owner of 17 years, Rebecca Bowering, understands that interior designers like Jenny are looking for quality textiles that can last a lifetime, which is why she stocks only the world’s best brands.
One of Jenny’s most inspiring textile ranges, Rubelli, is found at Atelier, along with the likes of Pierre Frey, Colefax and Fowler and Dominique Kieffer. She especially loves Rubelli’s rich use of colour. That love of colour and an appreciation for quality stems from early memories of her grandmother’s home, which was filled with beautiful antique furniture and exquisite fabrics.
“I think growing up in this space nurtured my natural instinct and appreciation for the beautiful, rare and the well-crafted workmanship found in objects and fabrics. I’ve always had a passion for beautiful things from Jewellery boxes, to fashion, and textiles.
Interior by Jenny Marshall
“I’m not sure if that’s what led me to be a designer, but looking back over the past 20 years, it’s all I’ve wanted to be involved in.”
Rebecca’s textile philosophy that true beauty lasts a lifetime and that fine furnishings should be treated as family heirlooms to be passed down for other generations to enjoy, just as they are in Europe, are notions by which Jenny also abides.
She personally treasures the old, traditional methods of fabric making, which she says are a fine art. As textile technology advances at a rapid rate and the older mills, which use traditional methods and processes, close down, Jenny says textiles that have been made this way will become more highly prized.
“What I love most about beautiful French Toiles, for example, or hand block printing, is the time that goes into making them. When you find these uniquely crafted fabrics in our world of technology today, it is something very special.”
Jenny makes her clients aware of their options and clever design. Throughout French history, key pieces of furniture would often only be covered in luxurious fabrics at the front, while the back of a
chair would be covered in toile carreaux (an inexpensive check). No one would know about the back because the chair was positioned against paneled wall.
It’s an old-fashioned and cost-effective technique that can easily be adopted in homes and spaces across New Zealand today. “You can do this with cushions made in fabric that you love. The front face can be covered in an expensive, well-made fabric, with less expensive, yet honest and simple, linen applied to the back,” explains Jenny.
Smart design also means understanding how the textile will be used and treated. She urges her clients to think carefully about using fabrics in the right places, taking into account their exposure to sunlight and daily wear and tear. It is any designer or decorator’s job to make sure the client has an understanding of the nature of a textile in terms of its application.
“I ask my clients, who will be near this fabric and where will it be used? Will children be on the sofa or, if it’s something for a bach, will it be exposed to sand that comes in with you after a day at the beach?”
The most important step in your design journey is a clear brief. It is vital to give your
designer a lucid indication of the desired style and ambiance for your home. The designer can help you define this brief further with more practical considerations.
“The relationship between a client and their designer is something to be treasured as it can be one that lasts months, years or even a lifetime,” says Rebecca.
“Designers keep up to date with all of the latest fabric releases keeping abreast of what is on trend and what technological advances have been made. Even if you’re unclear on your own style, they’re the ones who are trained to help you identify what you love now and will continue to love in the future.
“They value the investment you’re making in your interior as much as you do and they’ll be there to advise you on longterm purchases and decorating decisions that will make you fall in love with your home all over again.”
Atelier n. a workshop or studio, esp. of an artist or designer.

The Atelier Showroom features over 500sqm of acloves of hangers and books by brand - a true treasure trove, and a little daunting without your designer.

When Fabric Meets Art
This year, more than ever before, fabric design and art is converging. The English designer, Richard Smith, works for Jim Thompson creating the divine No9 collection. He paints his designs to an almost finished detail and then the clever artisans at Jim Thompson convert this into a fabric or wallpaper, whether it be a print, jacquard weave, velvet, paper or embroidery.
The subtleties gained from working with an actual painter’s palette gives a unique and distinctive feeling, capturing that artist’s innermost thoughts. The latest collection from No9, Indore Garden, presents butterflies, peacocks, pagodas and palms: fabrics so beautiful they could be stretched over a canvas and hung on the wall, or more practically utilised in making stunning curtains, cushions and blinds. Isabelle de Borchgrave is a world-renowned Belgian artist and sculptor commissioned by Fabricut this year to produce an amazing range of fabrics. She has drawn on her breathtaking paper dresses designs and original art to develop an exciting offering of fabrics. Isabelle uses her love for traditional and primitive art to produce something very special and distinctive.
Rubelli last year took inspiration from a perfume maker, watercolour artist and ceramicist to initiate a range of fabrics that aroused the entire international design community. We love this new directionthese artists are bringing soul and meaning to the design world.

Old Bed, New Bed, Borrowed Bed, Blue Bed
Do you know how old your bed is? Sleepyhead’s latest research shows us just how important a clean and healthy bed is for a good night’s sleep. With the potential for dust mites, fungus and skin cells to build up in mattresses over time, it’s often forgotten that you should change your mattress at least every 8-10 years for healthy sleep.
New research commissioned by Sleepyhead into Kiwi bedrooms reveals that four out of 10 mattresses in Manawatu/Wanganui homes are at least a decade old, making them the oldest bunch of beds in the country.
Wherever in New Zealand you look though, you’re likely to encounter old beds. More than a quarter of us are sleeping on mattresses we’ve had for a decade or more. Then another 7% of Kiwis have no idea how old their mattress is.
Another effect of sleeping on an old bed is the lack of comfort and support due to general wear and tear. Drawing on the analogy of a running shoe, while your shoes may look okay after a couple years of use, they will no longer have the correct support and comfort properties they did when you first bought them. They won’t cushion your feet or support your arch like they used to. Your bed is similar. It can still look okay but may no longer give you what you need in terms of postural support or comfort. And this is a major contributor to why so many people wake up tired or suffer stiffness and aches and pains.
It’s important to remember every bed has a use-by date! Lack of support can also lead to increased partner disturbance as people find it difficult to get comfortable. As a result, they are likely to
toss and turn more often throughout the night. These continuous movements can ultimately end up disrupting sleeping partners.
“Mattress innovation has come a long way in recent years and the right support can also prevent partner disturbance.” said Sleepyhead and NZ Comfort Group General Manager Chris Taylor. With one-third of our lives spent in bed, it’s worth putting some thought into what sort of life your mattress has had, and the impact it has on your life. It’s the things you can’t see that make the difference to a good night’s sleep.

How old is your really?bed,
Take a moment... think back to when it was you bought your current bed.
Was the local gossip mag your ‘social media’? Were you wearing chains on your jeans of a Baby G watch? Were you sporting a mullet?
If your bed is over 10 years old it’s probably affecting how you sleep every night and feel every day.
You see, old beds invariably lose their support and comfort over time –plus they absorb moisture and other nasties (too gross to discuss here). And the trouble is, it happens so slowly that you don’t notice it.
Come clean on just how old your current bed is while you complete our Sleepyhead Bed Selector. You’ll discover the right bed for you, and we’ll send you an exclusive deal on your recommended Sleepyhead. You’ll find the Bed Selector at sleepyhead.co.nz
We expect thousands of ex MC Hammer pants, mood ring and stone washed denim wearing Kiwis will be joining you there.

Tiles for any Situation
He ritage Tiles is a leading NZ owned and operated importer and retailer of everything to do with tiles. With over 25 years of experience, they hold one of the largest stock of tiles in NZ, with over 1000 different styles in their warehouse!
There’s something for every taste and budget at Heritage Tiles, you’ll find everything from basic white tiles to the latest tile trends and luxurious designer Bisazza mosaics. All tiles come with a 10 year quality guarantee and Heritage Tiles offers free design consultation to help you select the perfect tile.
When it comes to current tile trends, there are four concepts, the first being rectangle formats. For 2014 there are more varieties in rectangle modules for the floor and wall than ever before, with different looks in a whole variety of sizes and ratios from small ‘subway’ tiles to large format tiles over a metre long.
Another upcoming trend is for tiles with undulating or uniquely textured surfaces, like the newest and very popular Manhattan wall tile range. These ‘subway’ style tiles feature an undulating surface with a sophisticated handcrafted look that brings depth into a space. Looking stunning as feature walls and in tiled showers, they breathe life into a room.
With decorate patterned tiles, there are two distinct looks. One is the random floral patterned look, influenced by Moroccan heritage designs, such as the Gredos and Tassel ranges. The other look for 2014 is a 3D geometric patterned look which adds interesting visual depth to flat surfaces. Both of these decorative tiles look absolutely stunning on either floors or walls.
The final on-trend concept for 2014 is tiles inspired by wood. Woodlook porcelain tiles are an easy maintenance alternative to timber flooring and have really taken off in 2014 thanks to a much larger variety of wood designs being available, with very natural looks in a range of sizes.
With six stores in Auckland, one in Wellington, and dealers nationwide, Heritage Tiles is easily available with a solution for every type of tile installation from mosaic splash backs, to bathroom and kitchen tiles, to exterior deck and pool tiles. There’s something for truly everyone!

What’s more, they never require sealing. The Supernatural

Non-porous, waterproof, mould and mildew resistant, Caesarstone quartz surfaces are ideal for numerous applications and make cleaning simple. In most cases, soap and water or a mild detergent are all that are required to maintain its lustre. Large slabs provide a sleek and modern aesthetic, minimising joins and therefore maintenance.
One of the biggest advantages of Caesarstone is the peace of mind of having a 10-year warranty. These new Supernatural designs are made using cutting-edge technology and are completely unique and exclusive to the Caesarstone brand. Backed by this warranty and superior after-sales service you can rest assured knowing the quality of every Caesarstone slab is the same.
The Caesarstone range has been developed to cover the full colour spectrum to suit all kitchen types. Your kitchen is the heart of your home and therefore aesthetic appeal is all important, it needs to be inspiring and beautiful. But there’s no need to compromise on the more practical elements such as durability, strength and superb value; with Caesarstone, you can be sure of a quality product that will deliver in terms of form and function to create a kitchen that’s a pleasure to spend time in.

Blum... Practical and Ergonomic
Blum, the Austrian kitchen hardware specialist offers practical inner dividing systems for drawers, covering every type of kitchen storage item. ORGA-LINE sets are available for any width of drawer, allowing you to customise your storage to suit your requirements. Blum has been studying the requirements of kitchen users for over 30 years. More than 300 kitchens from across the globe have been analysed over a period of a week each. The research found that around 66 per cent of people were unhappy with the amount of storage or access to stored goods within their kitchen. So it really pays to invest some time in the planning stage to ensure cabinets are well organised, ergonomically friendly and made to the highest standards in order to stand the test of time.
Blum prides itself on its highly practical and ergonomic systems and products. In fact, all Blum’s ORGA-LINE accessories are made specifically for drawers (as opposed to
cupboards), as Blum recognises that goods stored in drawers are easier to access, providing a better view of all the contents. Blum’s SPACE-TOWER pantry system has five pull-outs that open individually to provide plenty of space for all your provisions and it comes in a variety of widths from 275mm to 1.2m to suit your specific requirements. Blum’s Sink Pull-out creates new storage space that would otherwise go unused. ORGA-LINE cutlery inserts allow cutlery to stay perfectly organised in highquality, hygienic stainless steel trays. The containers are reconfigurable, removable and dishwasher-safe. Blum’s SPACE CORNER drawer is a fabulous corner drawer that brings goods stored at the very back of the cabinet out towards you. No more reaching into the back of the unknown to fish out that lost container.
Modern bathroom vanities are evolving into pieces of furniture, displaying a statement of personal style. Traditionally, bathroom vanities are designed for utility rather than style. While practicality should always be high on the agenda, it doesn’t mean style should be sacrificed. Contemporary vanities combine fashion and function so you don’t have to compromise.
Offering the freedom of personal expression the Create Vanity range by Athena allows you to hand pick each component of your vanity from an array of options to develop a personalised look. Delivering creativity without confusion, a piece from the Create Vanity range is perfect if you are looking to stamp some personality in your bathroom.
Bathrooms tend to lend themselves to the adventurous use of colour, so don’t be afraid to consider something outside the standard ‘white on white’ that has remained popular for so many years. Clever use of the right colours and tones can transform a functional bathroom into a unique and inspirational space. While tiles and paint present ideal options for creating a point of difference, the finish of your vanity cabinet is also a great way to execute a design statement.
Trends toward natural themes in the
bathroom are evident with the popularity of coloured cabinet finishes such as Charred Oak and Cordova Olive. Bold colours like Piper, Savanna and high gloss Exochique finishes are also claiming their space in the latest in vanity cabinet finishes offering a glossy metallic finish. If statement finishes are a little outside your comfort zone, consider a softer hue like Sabine or White Ash.
Vanities come in a range of designs and sizes to suit a remarkable number of bathroom styles. In today’s generous sized bathrooms you can often fit a larger than “standard” size vanity which presents the option of having a single or double bowl vanity. Opting for two basins is a great solution for situations where multiple people are using the bathroom. Don’t be tempted to opt for a larger vanity if it impacts negatively on the rest of the bathroom. A well designed bathroom allows room to move around while giving appropriate space to the most commonly used functions of the bathroom.
The most important things to consider are who is going to use the space, when it will be used and for what. Determining what is needed from your bathroom vanity will help to decide which size, style and design will work best for you.

Trailblazing High Quality Eco-Responsible Timber
Eye Magazine sat down with Verda International Ltd CEO Grant Butterworth to learn about his cutting edge business which is leading the way in innovative and eco-responsible outdoor products. Verda manufactures and supplies specialist outdoor wood products. Outdoor decking is their cornerstone product, but they also lead the way in outdoor fencing, garden systems and landscape materials. They sell throughout New Zealand supplying Placemakers alongside a number of other merchants, and exporting around the globe with a strong interest for products coming from Europe and Asia.
Premium outdoor wood products traditionally have been produced from slow growing tropical hardwoods. However as these sources have increasingly become stripped and depleted, wood has been taken from virgin tropical rainforests. The world is now increasingly looking for alternative sources of product to ensure the survival of rainforests and to support sustainable plantation forestry like in
New Zealand. Many countries now have legislation in place regarding strict controls around the legality of imported wood which is a milestone to stop exploiting environmentally valuable forests like the virgin tropical rainforests of places like South America and Africa. Such statutes were implemented in Europe in March 2013, Australia in October 2013 and are currently in place in Japan. New Zealand is going through the process at the moment, as is China. There’s no doubt this will be the way of the future as the health of the world’s forests are purported to have a direct correlation to global warming.
In answer to the problem of sourcing high quality eco-responsible wood, Verda has developed a number of pre-finished outdoor products engineered with Radiata pine from plantation forests in New Zealand. The products provide superior performance and weathering characteristics, and come with great environmental credentialsperfect for high quality outdoor applications. The key point to take home is that this wood comes from plantation forest, and
not rainforest. The company has two ranges – their Verda Outdoor and the more traditional radiata decking products marketed under the V3 brand.
Verda has been around since 2002 and began working on many of their superior wood products back in 2007. They operate from their production and processing base in Rotorua. Over the years, they have gained a solid market reputation for being a high quality, consistent, and customer responsive supplier of timber. They now enjoy a large share of the New Zealand decking market in addition to their key export markets in Asia, Europe and the pacific region, while continuing to receive great validation from product users.
The company is 100% New Zealand owned and operated and remains at the forefront of technology with both logistics and optimization systems, and have partnered with technology companies to maintain this leading industry position.

Bloody Rare and Rather Well Done
Nestled in a spot where land meets sea, The Portlander is a unique take on the grill house concept – one which is local, seasonal, cultivated and just a little bit wild. The Portlander is all about superb cuts of meat, prepared to perfection and finished in style. Bloody rare and rather well done, it’s the ideal place to eat meat and greet. Eye Magazine caught up with The Portlander’s new chef, Tim, to talk about their new menu.
What is your main goal with the new Portlander menu?
To source quality New Zealand products, and deliver them with old school passion and finesse, I want to deliver an honest, appetizing and sometimes innovative menu that provokes good conversation.
What would be your favourite breakfast?
Eggs Benedict and Champagne in bed!
Tell us about some of your passions in the food industry?
Uncomplicated, honest food, surrounding myself with chefs who are passionate, who always strive for perfection and have a laugh while doing it!
Who do you look up to in the hospitality
industry globally?
Marco Pierre White, The Roux Brothers and every chef who is passionate and respects the industry.
What have been some of your career highlights up until now?
The one that always sticks out is from when I was training at a Michelin starred restaurant in Brussels; we were flown via private jet to Zaire to cook dinner for then dictator President Mobutu – pretty surreal!
We recently tried the vegetarian burger at the Portlander and it was the best we’d ever had – packed with vegetables and wrapped in lettuce – who created this burger?
Our burger menu was created through a survey of our regular diners. The ‘Peacekeeper’ burger has been a hit with vegetarians and the carb-conscious alike. Once the need was noted, we decided to make it the best and biggest vegetable burger for miles –I’m glad we succeeded!
What can we expect to see change on the menu in the next few months?
The menu will be heavily led by the seasons. Desserts and entrées will be revamped – and the steak will stay King!

Happy Farming Also Means Happy Eating
How is your food farmed?
Eye Magazine had the pleasure of catching up with Gregor Fyfe, Co Founder of Freedom Farms New Zealand Limited. Freedom Farms is an exciting brand and company which started in New Zealand seven years ago. The company was founded by a handful of everyday consumers who were struggling to find pork products that could be traced back to a farm. Gregor and his partners wanted to know exactly how the pork products they were consuming, had been farmed. They quickly discovered there was a gap in the market. There were simply no pork products available in supermarkets with traceability back to the farm.
It took nearly a year for Freedom Farms to get up and running, establishing new relationships and processes with those farmers who wished to come on board. The SPCA was enlisted to operate as an independent third party auditor ensuring that robust high welfare farming practices were being met. Animal welfare was to be the number one priority on a Freedom Farm. New standards were put in place and farmers under the scheme agreed to be regularly and independently audited by the SPCA, with the sole purpose being to improve welfare standards for animals.
Freedom Farms then went about developing an exciting new range of pork products. One of the advantages of high welfare farming, is that it translates into meat with improved quality and taste. Eye Magazine’s Lifestyle Writer sampled one of the bacon products and was highly impressed with the depth of flavour and taste experienced. There is no doubt, that this is a high quality brand that clearly resonates in the products. The company focuses solely on producing superior quality premium products across its entire range, focusing on high quality ingredients and refusing to pump products with heaps of water

- Gregor Fyfe
to make them cheaper. Gregor tells Eye “A ham shouldn’t bounce if you drop it... Happy farming translates into happy animals and happy eating.”
Freedom Farms are part of a worldwide movement often called ‘ethical consumerism.’ There is now increased consumer awareness surrounding the way in which products are made and how they are farmed; from Fair Trade coffee through to free range eggs. People are now saying “When I
buy something, I can make a difference. When I buy a product, I want to know that the company shares the same values that I stand for.” In fact, research shows that this group of consumers now makes up approximately 30% of all consumers. So, while the products may come with a slightly higher pricetag, people are happy to pay a little more knowing they can make a big difference. Consumers are asking themselves: “What other products does this company sell? Do I believe in
the company’s philosophy? What is the big picture?”
Freedom Farms is a brand that is serious about how the animals they farm for food are treated. They are passionate about what they do and what they stand for. Traditional pork farming means farming intensively in an effort to produce products as cheaply as possible. However Freedom Farms brings products to the table that have been farmed in a way that always allows
“All Freedom Farms products come from SPCA approved farms here in New Zealand . No exceptions.”
the animals to express their natural behaviour. In the case of their pig farms this means, no sow crates, farrowing crates or concrete fattening pens.
When Freedom Farms started off seven years ago, their products were only available in a few selected stores around the country. The business has since evolved and products are now available in all New Zealand supermarkets and specialty stores. Products include a variety of sausages, sliced and whole hams, bacon and fresh pork. In addition, they offer convenient packs of shaved free range roast chicken and roast turkey.
Last year, Freedom Farms decided
to enter into the free range egg market. They had discovered that not all eggs labelled free range were the same. Free range egg standards are still voluntary, meaning that ‘free range’ had become somewhat of a marketing term. As with their pork products, Freedom Farms wanted their egg farmers to meet independent standards and agree to third party certification of their eggs. Freedom Farms eggs are independently audited by the SPCA with strict standards around things like flock size and stocking density. Freedom Farms have a maximum stocking density of 2,500 birds per hectare.
“We are very concerned about flock
sizes and stocking densities,” says Fyfe. “We have seen the free range egg market in Australia allow farms with stocking densities as large as 20,000 birds per hectare. Most people would not consider this to be free range. We are determined to make sure this doesn’t happen in NZ.”
Freedom Farms eggs are now available nationally in leading supermarkets and specialty stores.
So where to next for Freedom Farms?
The demand for naturally farmed food and more humane farming is increasing worldwide. So don’t be surprised to see Freedom Farms Free Range chicken, or SPCA approved salmon or even Freedom Farms dairy products appear on the shelves of your specialist food store in the future.

J Boards... The Natural Wonder
Jude Corlett has always been a foodie, loving feeding the masses and relishing in big gatherings. Food for her, offers an amazing opportunity for people to come together, celebrate and share joy. When she was travelling through Gozo Malta, she noticed two very large, very old boards hooked up in the dining room of a home-stay she was staying at. She discovered that the boards had been used for many generations to bring family and friends together over a meal. Jude was taken by the phenomenally simple, yet amazing way that these boards encouraged the sharing of food and rally of wonderful company. From this, the idea of J Boards was conceived and brought back to New Zealand.
To make J Boards, Jude seeks out and utilizes wood that tells a story, travelling far and wide to locate Rimu, kauri and oak for their character, strength and durability. This means that each board has a unique history right from its raw state and adds to the quality and narrative of the finished product.
There are nearly limitless uses for J Boards as they make serving food so easy you can let your imagination run wild! Use them for platters, pizza, lasagna, bread, the list goes on. Being all different sizes the boards can be used for different occasions and numbers of people.
Each board is a work of art, tailored specifically for timeless quality and abundant enjoyment. They are created for sharing and simplicity, so get together, break bread and let the good times roll! www.jboardsoriginal.com
The Crab Shack
“Have you got crabs…we have!”
The latest addition to Wellington’s dining scene, The Crab Shack, on Queen’s Wharf, is serious about serving great food in a casual and eclectically marine inspired environment.
The menu boasts “Home Grown Goodness’ and that is exactly what The Crab Shack delivers from 11 am till late –seven days a week. Fresh seafood selected daily by the Shack’s own fishmonger is complemented by food ‘from the earth’ is an entertaining menu that fits with the fun and casual dining environment. Taking over space that used to house the bar in the popular Shed 5 restaurant, there is something for everyone to enjoy, from the rustic crab pots to the imaginative menu.
Crab baskets act as chandeliers, hanging from the exposed beamed ceiling over a mix of leather-toped stools, time-weathered schoolhouse chairs and wooden tables. A large rectangular television plays music videos and advertises the day’s specials
above diner’s heads, such as Monday’s Mussel Madness’.
Relaxed and casual, Geoff Ngan’s menu reflects the way we Kiwis like to eat when with a group of friends or family: fresh and great tasting meals at a reasonable price.
Encouraging this friendly atmosphere and family get-togethers, kids eat for free on Sundays with their own menu complete with old fashioned word games to fill in the time before a Marshmallow snowman dessert arrives!
Adding to the casual atmosphere is the busy ‘gallery’, where the chefs display their own personalities and talents as they prepare tastes of New Zealand. Cloudy Bay clams and other shellfish are served by the ‘scoop’ or try some blackened Cajun fish straight from the ‘charcoal barrel’ – a charcoal barbecue. ‘Kiwi clam chowder in a jar’ would be hard to resist on a chilly Wellington winter’s day. If you are in the mood to share, the kilo of Nelson Paddle crab of 800g of Red King Crab might just
be right to have after an entire entrée of tender calamari or crab and prawn cakes. And, if you like the look of the gear worn by the staff, you can buy the ‘We’ve got crabs. Have you?’ t-shirts to take home.
However, if you are hanging out for a really decent burger or meat fix then The Crab Shack will hit the spot with either a grilled chicken ‘Big Jed’ burger or a fish ‘Captain Waru’ or a ‘Big Welly’ buffalo burger, all served up with a side of steak fries and creamed corn. Or try something from the ‘hangi style’ earth oven, such as the Sirloin Shack Stack and Crab and Clam Fettuccine, and add some prawns to ensure you don’t miss out on that seafood flavour!
These are, of course, just a few examples off the seasonal menu that also includes salads, tacos, seafood platters and an array of sliders. Desserts include a selection of old favourites such as chocolate mud cake.
A succinct wine list includes many of New Zealand’s best wines, including a couple on tap, as well as Crafty Beggers
tap beer along with other bottled brands. Cocktails have not been forgotten, with a ‘Beach Bum’ heading the list and going down to a ‘Sunburn’.
The Crab Shack is a great addition to Queens Wharf providing a cheerful meeting place for locals and tourists alike. The proximity to the water and the atmosphere make it a perfect place to come and crack open a beer as well as a crab. It showcases New Zealand’s delicious tastes of the sea and earth. Just make sure you are ready for the experience!

Marvel at What Marvel Grill Has to Offer…
Owned by Alisdair Gribben of Vivace fame and his partner Wendy Sutherland, Marvel Grill is a restaurant on North Wharf and is part of Auckland’s waterfront Wynyard Quarter development. The restaurant itself was an idea that Alisdair and Wendy came up with from travelling throughout Asia and the United States, they wanted to create a non fussy fare that was both honest and prepared simply.
The kitchen design at Marvel Grill is a significant part of the establishment, and
is a feature that conveys the vibrant and meaningful concept that was intended. Two char grill sections bring light, theatre and wonderful smells to the diners where they can observe at first hand, the chefs preparing their meals. This ties in with the significance of the restaurant’s name, where guests can quite literally ‘marvel at the grill’. Wendy also notes that patrons ‘marvel’ in respect to the restaurant’s ‘food heroes’.
The spotlight at Marvel Grill is on fresh produce and where it has derived from. It’s of great importance to Alisdair, Wendy and the team at Marvel Grill that they know not
only the story of the product but are also assured that the treatment of the product was responsible and respectful. They believe that the treatment of all products has a direct impact with the quality of the end product and this is what separates Marvel Grill from other fine dining restaurants. There is a huge focus at Marvel Grill on all that New Zealand has to offer, in particular, beef and seafood. They select only the best purveyors and provide the most traceable, responsible products. Moana supplies the majority of the seafood to Marvell Grill, and you can
find their boats unloading just 50 meters away from the restaurant. This is hugely beneficial as they receive the freshest seafood possible every day! There have even been instances where snapper were caught at 6 am from the Coromandel and delivered to the Marvel Grill kitchen that afternoon – you can’t get fresher than that!
Marvel Grill offers an experience based on old fundamental dining values, with a menu that is both honest and enduring. Delivering an offering of products sourced from all around New Zealand farms, Marvel’s intention is to create a casual
‘no-frills’ style of menu filled with excellent cuts of meat, nourishing comfort food and old favourites. Patrons can choose between eating at the bar, at a more intimate table, outside, or at the kitchen grill dining area. Something else that separates Marvel Grill from other dining establishments is that they were the first in town to implement an oyster bar in their restaurant – something that’s been met with rave reviews.
Marvel Grill is comfortable; it is a warm and friendly gathering place where the food and beverages consistently deliver what it promises, with personalised service that is
attentive, knowledgeable and friendly. The waterfront restaurant showcases farmers who are passionate, with absolute devotion to their animals, not to mention other fine products from all around the country. They pride themselves in honouring their vision that great food products must be captivating, but also essential to a happy and healthy life, making Marvel Grill a spectacular waterfront dining experience that you’re sure to remember.

Spirit of Friendship Finds Expression in Special Wines
Aclose friendship between two couples who are among the young stars of New Zealand winemaking, has led to the creation of a special joint wine range, Harwood Hall. One half of the equation, Digger and Deborah Hennessy, lives in Marlborough and the other, Corey and Megan Hall, in West Auckland. But that didn’t stop them working together.
Like the people behind it, Harwood Hall wines are described as adventurous, down to earth and personable. Eye Magazine caught up with the team to find out a bit more about them and their wines.
How did you guys start to work together?
Megan: We were both doing our own thing. Apart from being winemaker for Mt Riley, Digger and Deb began growing their own grapes on their vineyard in Marlborough, while Corey and I were already making wine under our label GEM. The boys have known each other for years – Digger gave Corey his first wine job in 1996 (at Matua Valley). Working together allowed us to pool our strengths in winegrowing, winemaking and the business side of it. The new energy that comes with a partnership has also had a huge impact.
What is the significance behind the name Harwood Hall?
Digger: We wanted to use our two family names, but using
Hennessy would have created problems, as the name is already in use. So we decided to call it Harwood Hall wines, Harwood being Deb’s dad’s name.
What makes Harwood Hall different?
Corey: Being owned by two young New Zealand winemaking families is different in itself, as well as how we grow, make and deliver the wine ourselves. We’re living, breathing and working this dream while raising our young families. In terms of the wine itself, we specialise crafting small quantities by hand, from the best fruit we can get our hands on.
Where do you source the fruit for your wines?
Digger: Some of our grapes come from our own vineyard in Marlborough, but we know winegrowers all over the country and if we find a contract grower with a parcel we like and it suits the wine we want to make, we buy it.
What role do awards play in your winemaking?
Corey: We make our wines so that friends like us can enjoy it together. Getting an award on top of that is a bonus. It does help us to promote our wines to more people so that’s good.
Megan: Having our wines feature in some of the world’s top restaurants and bars is a great achievement and is equally
important for our brand. Our Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc was recently selected by Sketch in Mayfair (one of London’s most impressive, stylish and opulent venues) as the house Sauvignon Blanc – this is something we are really proud of. Some of our accolades include Harwood Hall Viognier 2010 being in the top 5 for Cuisine Magazine in 2012, receiving 4.5 stars for the 2013 Sauvignon Blanc in Winestate Magazine and from Wine Orbit, as well as receiving 4 stars for the 2013 Pinot Gris from Wine Orbit.
What would you like people to think when they’ve had Harwood Hall?
Corey: That it was great! We want people to know they can always trust Harwood Hall to deliver quality that it’s made by two of New Zealand’s best winemakers, that you can enjoy it anytime, and its good value!
Where can wine lovers try Harwood Hall Wines?
Megan: Our wines are available at selected restaurants and specialist wine stores throughout New Zealand. They are also available throughout the UK, in some of the world’s leading restaurants and bars – several of them boasting Michelin stars such as Alain Ducasse (3 Michelin stars) and the Connaught. Harwood Hall wines are also available directly at these websites: www.harwoodhall.co.nz or www.nzwinesociety.co.nz and throughout Australia at www.cellarmasters.com.au
Come to Italy!
Do you think Italy is far away? Not at all!
La Bella Italia Restaurant in Petone, Wellington makes you feel like you are in Italy from the very moment you step in. This amazing place is not only a restaurant, as its name suggests, but also a retail shop where you can find products exclusively imported from Italy.
La Bella Italia, born from the enthusiasm and the initiative of Antonio Cacace, wants to convey the real atmosphere you would only breathe in Italy, and plunges you into a unique experience of food, culture and traditions. Dining at La Bella is a treat: Italian music in the background cheers you up and the staff that serves you, chats in Italian. Your table is surrounded by pictures of landscapes, towns and villages from Italy, as well as by old pictures of Antonio’s family and the shop shelves are at hands length. You really feel like you are sitting at a table in an Italian market square.

For example, you can choose your favourite cheeses and compose your own platter, which will be enriched with fresh fruit, jam and biscuits and served at your table, so yummy!

If you are still dreaming of Italy though, Antonio has the right answer for you! Talk to him about his Italian tours that take place every year. He says the Grand Tour of Italy was born from his will to satisfy the customer’s urge to visit the “Bel Paese” guided by an insider, to live Italy and not only to visit it.
The idea was to gather a small group of people and lead them through the nooks and crannies of the country, and this is what Antonio’s Grand Tour of Italy is today. He personally guides his guests to taste, hear and see the best of Italy: from South to North through historical sites, art museums, handicraft productions and opera shows, two weeks of buoyant emotions.
Last but not least, at La Bella Italia is their Business Centre. This conference and meeting venue has recently opened its doors but it is already in full swing. Next door to the restaurant, the Business Centre features beautifully decorated and comfortable rooms fully equipped and with the opportunity to enjoy the amazing food or organize a blind tasting. Your team building event, your meeting, or your convention will hit the nail here, mixing professionalism and training in a relaxing environment.

Luxury in the Heart of Sydney
Set on the dress-circle of Sydney Harbour, Four Seasons Hotel
Sydney offers visitors not only lofty postcard-worthy views from their rooms, but on the ground, a convenient location to the historical district of The Rocks where Sydney’s first settlers landed. Only steps away, lies the picturesque Sydney Harbour, embraced by two of Australia’s best loved icons – the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Opera House.
These magnificent icons are best seen elevated – 32 floors up, precisely. It’s there, in a spacious Full Harbour View Junior Suite that I lie on a chaise lounge and simply gaze at the beautiful harbour. The rest of the room is similarly impressive – the plush king-size bed that feels like a cloud to sleep on, a spacious marble bathroom, a generous work desk and – our favourite –a coffee maker.
I’m here for a weekend stay with my husband, a coffee addict. When we don’t feel like making a coffee ourselves, we head over to the hotel’s Executive Club – a quiet haven where we’re happy to indulge in a plethora of buffet breakfast options, and with an egg chef on hand, our bellies are full and we’re simply content to gaze out the window to views of Walsh Bay.
Executive Club access (available for a fee) also gives us other perks. From 5pm we’re invited for canapés and a premium beverage service. We love Australian wine and it doesn’t take much convincing to try a quality Hunter Valley sauvignon blanc. The canapés are equally delicious and include both savoury and sweet options.
Dinner-time hits and we head to the lobby level of the hotel, where The Woods is located. Based on a premise of wood-fired cooking with Australian native
woods, the menu has us salivating before we’ve even ordered. We go for the wood grilled prawns and a chicken consommé for entrées, wood roast spatchcock and wagyu scotch fillet for our mains which impress us highly. The woods that the kitchen cooks with impart smokiness to the dishes that add a different level of flavour to the meats. Although we’re full to bursting, we have to try dessert, and again, it doesn’t disappoint. A salted caramel éclair with a chocolate sorbet finishes the evening on a high note.
A quick nightcap before bed? Yes please. The hotel’s bar, Grain, does a roaring trade in whiskys, organic and biodynamic wine and its own lager. Called the Grain Lager, it’s a full-bodied beer that goes down a treat. Finally, it’s back to bed, and the views of the harbour that gently lull us to sleep.
