The Audiovisual Art of the International Short Film Festival in Macau
Before presenting the Sound & Image Challenge International Festival 2019, we would like to share with our esteemed audience, the film screenings in Macau that started in 1905, a year after the installation of the electric light. The groundbreaking fact immediately begun the establishment of cinemas (called CINEMATOGRAPHS), where the increasing number of viewers grew interest in the 7th art was just as extraordinary as the competitiveness and rivalry among entrepreneurs.
The Cinema Houses in Macau enthusiastically presented the SILENT films at the Chinese opera sheds, where the imagination of the audience triggered them to faraway countries such as United States, France, Italy, Russia and so on. Idols of romance and drama such as Rudolfo Valentino and Charles Chaplin awoke in the audience, sparking intimate and unknown desires through the screen.
From the S i lent to Talk i e mov i es came the musical comedy. In 1927 the film The Jazz Singer by Alan Crosland, was the first to have sound, music, songs and dialogues, thanks to the use of the innovative and efective sound system.
In 1930s the TALKIES films appeared in Macau bringing sound to viewers and later other movies showing the stars singing and dancing. It was a terrific success. All the people chirped and danced to the songs of the screening films. Thus the dancing tea parties began in Macau.
Production companies such as the “Netflix” today, produces film series with multi-episode themed: religious, epic, thriller, spectacule movies such as Ben-Hur, The Vampires, Sherlock Holmes, Lucille Love, Broken Coin, Clutching Hand, Lassie, etc. In 1929, the CAPITOL THEATRE had the best sound and image system, and movie tickets for every session were sold out quickly. In those glorious film days to the 90s of the 20th century, the beautiful Dom Pedro V Theatre rivaled with the other cinemas, and they organised matinees for children and dancing tea parties.
And, today (2019), we all enjoy this Theatre to celebrate the Short Film Festival, a perfect
marriage with the memorable ambience of this building with the filmic modernity.
This year, we are extremely happy because we also celebrate the 10th anniversary of the SOUND & IMAGE CHALLENGE, launched in 2010, which, for five consecutive years was regulated as an audiovisual contest. Since 2015, this Short Film Festival is held annually in Macau exhibiting the latest film productions worldwide. Despite some imposed limitations, a total of 3897 short films and music videos were submitted to this year’s SHORTS and VOLUME international competitions. The growing number of high quality Ofcial Selection for the Sound & Image Challenge International Festival 2019 exceeded our expectations and we happily extended the Festival. The Ofcial Selection of SHORTS 2019 has 112 films consisting 63 fictions, 26 animations and 23 documentaries. These shorts are candidates to the Festival’s awards in the submitted category. The awards are designated as follow: Best Film of the Festival, Best Fiction, Best Animation, Best Documentary, Macau Cultural Identity, Best Local Entry and Audience Award. Among the Ofcial Selection in Fiction, 14 films were nominated for the following Prestigious Awards: Best Cinematography, Best Director, Best Music, Best Sound Design, Best Editing and Best Visual Efects. The Audience Award will be determined by the public through VOTING in presence at the Festival. Besides that the Ofcial Selection of VOLUME 2019 consists of 8 music videos nominated for the following awards: Best Music Video, Best Song and Best Visual Efects.
The Festival's program includes EXPANDED CINEMA with 15 invited films by directors from Guinea-Bissau, Sweden, United Kingdom, Lithuania, Sri Lanka, Ukraine and Macau. The public will be delighted to watch 135 high quality films and music videos; attend MASTERCLASSES in Fiction and Animation of techniques on directing, production and visual efects by the following directors: Lanka Bandaranayake (Sri Lanka), Måns Berthas (Sweden) and Julien Dykmans (France); enjoy POST SCREENING TALKS with movie directors of the finalists; MEET THE JURY to better understand the selected films; join a WALKING TOUR along the past filming locations that may well spark the interest to the movie directors for their next film.

A Arte Audiovisual do Festival Internacional de Cinema de Curtas-Metragens em Macau
Antes de apresentarmos o Sound & Image Challenge International Festival 2019, gostaríamos de enquadrar o estimado público nas primeiras mostras Cinema em Macau, ocorridas em 1905, um ano depois da instalação da luz eléctrica. O facto inovador fez surgir imediatamente o estabelecimento de Cinemas chamados CINEMATÓGRAFOS onde o crescente interesse do público pela 7a arte, foi tão extraordinário quanto a competitividade e rivalidade entre os empresários.
O Cinema em Macau apresenta com furor o Cinema MUDO em barracões para espectáculos de teatro e ópera chinesa, onde o imaginário do público é transportado para países longínquos tais como a América, França, Itália, Rússia e etc. Os ídolos do romance e drama, tais como Rudolfo Valentino e Charles Chaplin despertavam no público, através da tela, desejos íntimos e desconhecidos.
Do MUDO ao SONORO surge a comédia musical. Em 1927 a exibição de O cantor de jazz (The Jazz Singer), de Alan Croslan, foi o primeiro filme com som e voz, diálogos e canções graças à inovador e eficaz sistema sonoro. Em 1930, chega a Macau, o primeiro filme FALADO, trazendo a emoção do sonoro aos espectadores, e mais tarde, os filmes em que as estrelas cantava e dançavam. Foi um sucesso bombástico. A audiência emocionada interagia com os diálogos, que agitada, chorava copiosamente, ria desenfreadamente ou suspirava maravilhada. Todos trauteavam e dançavam as canções dos seus ídolos. Iniciaram-se assim os chás dançantes.
As distribuidoras productoras como a “Netflix” de hoje, produziram filmes séries com vários episódios de cariz religioso, épico, policial. Sensacionais tais como: Ben- Hur, Os Vampiros, Sherlock Holmes, Lucille Love, Broken Coin, A Mão de Embraagem, Lassie e etc. Em 1929, o TEATRO CAPITOL tinha o melhor sistema sonoro e de imagem, esgotando-se rapidamente os bilhetes dos filmes de todas as sessões. Naqueles tempos e gloriosos dias do cinema, a maravilhosa sala de espectáculos do Teatro Dom Pedro V, rivalizava com os outros cinemas quer no cinema mudo e sonoro, onde tinha matinées para crianças e chãs
dançantes até aos anos 90 do Século XX.
E hoje (2019), desfrutamos deste Teatro celebrando o Festival de Curtas-Metragens, um casamento perfeito com a memorável ambiência deste edifício e com a modernidade fílmica.
Este ano, sentimo-nos duplamente felizes porque festejamos o 10o aniversário do SOUND & IMAGE CHALLENGE lançado em 2010, estruturado como concurso de audiovisual durante cinco anos. Em 2015 tornou-se um Festival de curtas-metragens único em Macau. Este Festival é realizado anualmente em Macau e faz-se das mais recentes produções fílmicas mundiais. Pese embora algumas limitações impostas aos concorrentes, foram submetidas 3897 às competições internacionais SHORTS e VOLUME. Assim, o número crescente de filmes finalistas de superior qualidade da edição do Sound & Image Challenge International Festival 2019, excedeu as nossas expectativas e vimo-nos obrigados a alargar os dias do Festival.
A Selecção Oficial de SHORTS 2019, somam 112 curtas que corresponde a 63 ficções, 26 animações e 23 documentários, sendo candidatas aos prémios do Festival e ao da categoria correspondente. Os prémios têm a designação seguinte: Melhor Filme do Festival, Melhor Ficção, Melhor Animação, Melhor Documentário, Melhor Entrada Local, Identidade Cultural de Macau, Prémio da Audiência. Dentro da Selecção Oficial em Ficção, foram nomeados 14 curtas para os seguintes Prémios de Prestígio: Melhor Cinematografia, Melhor Realizador, Melhor Música, Melhor Design de Som, Melhor Edição, Melhor Efeitos Visuais. O Prémio da Audiência de SHORTS será determinado pelo público através do VOTO presencial. A Selecção Oficial de vídeos musicais é constituída por 8 finalistas que são candidatos aos seguintes prémios: Melhor Vídeo Musical, Melhor Canção, Melhor Efeitos Visuais.
A programação do Festival abrange o CINEMA EXPANDIDO exibindo 15 filmes convidados de realizadores da Guiné-Bissau, Suécia, Lituânia, Srilanka, Ucrânia, Inglaterra e Macau. Em suma, o grande público terá para seu deleite 135 películas e vídeos musicais; MASTERCLASSES em Ficção e Animação sobre técnicas de realização, produção e efeitos visuais, dirigidas pelos seguintes realizadores: Lanka Bandaranayake (Srilanka), Måns Berthas (Suécia) e Julien Dykmans (França); CON-
VERSAS após a visualização dos filmes; CONHEÇA O JÚRI um encontro para o público; PASSEIO A PÉ pelos locais de filmagens de outrora que talvez desencadeie o interesse dos realizadores para filmagens futuras.

Welcome to the 10th Sound & Image Challenge, celebrating the first decade of this internationally acclaimed film and video Festival with a record selection to be presented at Macau, from the 3rd to the 10th of December 2019. Altogether, 194 short films and videos will be shown to the public at the iconic Dom Pedro V Theatre.
Sound & Image Challenge started 10 years ago from humble beg innings and objectives, as a competition for promotional films oriented towards public afairs and an incentive for production of VTRs for Macau own grown musical bands.
It rapidly became international and the Festival director Lúcia Lemos, saw the opportunity to turn it into something bigger, taking advantage of Macau Government’s investment in developing its own cultural and creative industries and the historical heritage of this city. Today, we are welcoming movie directors from Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, China, Czech Republic, Denmark,
England, Estonia, France, Germany, Greece, Guinea-Bissau, Hong Kong, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Iran, Israel, Italy, Japan, Macau, Malaysia, Moldova, Netherlands, Pakistan, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Slovenia, Spain, Sri Lanka, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Turkey, Ukraine, United States, Venezuela and Vietnam.
This year’s selection of 112 films and 8 musical videos will all be place for public choice as well as the scrutiny on the Jury and Grand Jury panels.
We would like to thank the Ofce of the Secretary for Social Afairs and Culture for the support over the years to IEEM and CCI, to Macau Foundation for the financial support and to the Macau Cultural Afairs Bureau (IC) for allowing us to use their wonderful facilities.

Casa de Portugal em Macau band is composed by Tomás Ramos de Deus, Miguel Andrade, Paulo Pereira, Luís Bento and Ivan Pineda. Based in Macau, they perform in a variety of initiatives for public and private entities.
Guitar, bass, vocals, drums and saxophone are the main instruments played by the team of professional musicians and friends, transmitting to the public their passion for music and joy of performing together.
The band is characterized by its versatility, being able to present a variety of performances such as original songs, Jazz, Fado, Rock, Soul, Funk, Pop, children's songs - international and lusophone music with songs from the 60’s to nowadays.

Trabalhou em diferentes géneros e os seus documentários ganharam vários prémios em Bogoshorts Colombia, FlickerFest Australia e Asian International Film Festival na Coreia do Sul.
For ritualistic reasons on the Island of Canhabaque, Guinea-Bissau, men are forced to separate from their wives. The documentary portrays the sufering of women as victims of these ancestral practices.

Domingos Sanca, holds a degree in Cinema and Television at the Escuela Internacional de Cine y Television de San António de Los Banhos La Havana at the Republic of Cuba. He is the director, scriptwriter and cameraman for the documentaries films: “Rio da Verdade” on the environmental “Cacheu River Mangroves Natural Park”, and “Threatened Paradise” on the discovery of oil in the Bijagós Archipelago, a biosphere eccosystem reserve inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. These documentaries won the International Contest Program DOCTV-CPLPCommunity of Portuguese Speaking Countries I, II in Guinea-Bissau and were screened in over ten international television channels. He is also the director of the short film “Matu Malgós” and the film won the Best Picture Award at UEMOA Festival, Cotê D`Ivoire.

In the North of Portugal where the land is fertile and the climate is perfect for making wine, we meet the five wine makers that make up the Portuguese wine supergroup called Douro Boys consisting of a collaboration between five diferent wine estates. Despite their diferent tastes, styles of winemaking and personalities, the Douro Boys are willing to challenge themselves and look past their egos to bring Portuguese table wines to the rest of the world. Mahdi Fleifel é um realizador dinamarquês –palestiniano, licenciado em 2009 na Escola Nacional de Filme & TV, Inglaterra. É co-fundador da productora Naka GilmWorks. O seu filme Um Homem Submerso foi seleccionado no Festival de Cannes (2017), nomeado no festival BAFTA (2018) e foi vencedor do Melhor Filme do Festival Sound & Image Challenge Challenge International Festival 2018.
Through the 215 windows I saw in the past 7 years when I lived in 5 countries, in 7 cities and in 16 houses, I could see immigrants, couples, lost: some read, some play, some sleep, some learn to walk the balance beam, they come in, they go out.

Ian Lam was born in Toronto, Canada in 1989. His parents are both from Macau. From 1998 to 2007, he studied at Claude Watson School in Canada and obtained a degree in Visual Arts.
In 2015, he co-published Cook Book, a project collaborated with the Macau artist Konstantin Bessmertny and the celebrity Kristofer Luczak.
In 2016, he began his career as Director of Marketing and Design at Macau Creations. In 2017, together with the Macao Advertising Association, they successfully got the right to host the 2021 AdAsia in Macau. He is the founder of the "What’s Your Art" project, aiming to bring out the true story of Macau through a series of new methods.

Os seus pais são de Macau. Entre 1998 e 2007, estudou na Escola Claude Watson, no Canadá, formando-se em Artes Visuais. It is a great pleasure to curate eight short films directed by Sri Lankan female filmmakers that are included within the EXPANDED CINEMA screening session of the international short film festival of Macau. These shorts, which have been selected for this event, earned international and national audience attention, as well as several awards. These films will bring a unique experience to the local audience and the attending international filmmakers, as they are screening for the first time in Macau.
É um grande prazer fazer a curadoria de oito curtas-metragens realizadas por mulheres cineastas do Srilanka, a serem incluídas em sessões do CINEMA EXPANDIDO no festival internacional de curtas-metragens de Macau. Os filmes selecionados, mereceram à atenção do público nacional e internacional, conquistando vários prémios. Estas escolhas, trarão uma experiência única ao público local e aos cineastas internacionais presentes, ao serem exibidos pela primeira vez em Macau.
Lanka Bandaranayke is a producer, director and an actress from Sri Lanka. She started her stage drama career in 1998, which she earned several acting and costume designing national awards. Later, she produced and directed several national award-winning short dramas. Lanka directed and produced her first short film Tradition in 2016 and, it was ofcial selected in the short film festival in Macau, Sound & Image Challenge International Festival 2017. The film was screened over 40 film festivals winning international and national awards. Since then she has directed several short films. In 2018 and 2019, she was one of the jury for Fiction to SIC Festival and was invited to curate short films by Sri Lanka women movie directors, to be included in the programming of Expanded Cinema for the edition of the Festival in 2019.

Lanka Bandaranayke é productora, realizadora e atriz de Srilanka. Iniciou a sua carreira em 1998 e ganhou vários prémios nacionais de actuação e figuração. Posteriormente, produziu e dirigiu peças vencedoras de teatro nacionais.
Em 2016, realizou e produziu, a sua primeira curta-metragem Tradição, que foi selecionada e finalista no festival de curtas-metragens em Macau, Sound & Image Challenge International Festival 2017. Este filme foi exibido em mais de 40 festivais de cinema e obteve vários prémios nacionais e internacionais. Desde então, tem realizado várias curtas-metragens. Em 2018 e 2019 foi júri do Festival na categoria de Ficção e convidada a fazer uma curadoria de curtas-metragens realizadas por mulheres cineastas do Srilanka, a ser incluída na programação do Cinema Expandido da edição do Festival em 2019.

Chathumi Vidhushika is a temporary lecturer in University of the Visual & Performing Arts, Sri Lanka. She graduated from the same university and followed multimedia art subject for her degree. “The Image” is her first short film. The film won best script and second best film at WMC Short Film Competition in Sri Lanka.

Child marriages have been an unnoticed reality in some sections of the Muslim community in Sri Lanka. This film tells the story of Fathima, a 16-year old school girl, who is set to marry a man older than her. Not only is her right to education denied but her consent to marriage too. Until she accidentally meets her future husband, she is caught up between her hopes and the reality of her destiny.

Foi-lhe negado o direito à educação e o seu consentimento para casar. Sentiu o seu destino amarrada entre esperança e realidade até ser apresentada ao seu futuro marido.
Fathima Shanaz is a Lecturer in Communication and Media Studies attached to the Journalism Unit, University of Colombo. She has obtained B.A. Special (honors) in Mass Communication at University of Kelaniya in 2006. She is a film maker and researcher, her short film ‘Hope’ was screened in several national and international festivals and she won the SIGNIS Salutation award in 2018.

Nayani Sandya Chandrasinghe is an award-winning independent film director and scriptwriter from Sri Lanka. As a second generation miner, Xuan Jian’s life led him like train tracks straight into the mines after graduation, he worked in the vicious environment of the steam train for thirty years. Later, the Sandaoling Mines will close in 2020 because of resources dry up. Xuan Jian and the steam trains will all become just a part of history, the town will come to an end, and be gone like the steam.

This animated short film is based on a real story and sets in China during the Cultural Revolution in 1967. It is about a young boy Liang Liang, whose family is suddenly taken to the countryside by Red Guards. He is able to grab the only thing he treasures which is a western style music box, and is careful not to expose to the red guards.

Blademark was founded in 2005. They have been the few vanguards of heavy metal music and culture in Macao. Blademark was born in troubled times, but the band holds out till the end.
Heavy metal music just took up positions in the Europe and America regions, and Asia was in a hurry to develop it. Most people in Macao only had scanty knowledge of heavy metal music. A strong current was running through Macao that it spent a lot of eforts to develop mainstream music. The band decided to go the other way ignoring the trends and pressure. Blademark turned out to be a more flammable and spicy heavy metal flavour. 'Blademark' is the extreme ego and sound that you never forget, just as what the name stands for, their songs are like depressing BLADES that cruelly carve sorrow into others' hearts. MARKS are scratched one by one on your hearts to keep them in your mind.

Raymond — Bass guitarist Raymond is a typical Macanese born in Macau who lives in his very own style. Just like many other native-born Portuguese people, the blood of neither Chinese nor Portuguese is running in his body, but that of native-born Portuguese clan. The descendants of this clan more or less inherit the verve from the two great ancient maritime nations that Raymond is in his style to be quiet but passions are running through his veins calmly. He was the bass guitarist of an English rock band MZ in Macao at his age of 16, and later the bass guitarist of other bands. He is very wise in band and experienced in performing.
Fu – Drummer
Fu has established the Aces Music School by his own hand. He is committed to promoting Macau music culture and cultivating professional music talents, especially for the band culture. As the backbone of the BLADEMARK, Fu is the drummer and one of the founding members of the band. In 2013, He left the band to focus on promoting the music culture. He finally returned to the band in 2018, continued the life to be on the stage, using his experience to influence others’ life and his spirit of rock and roll!

Raymond é um macaense típico nascido em Macau com o seu próprio estilo de vida. Assim como muitos outros portugueses nativos de Macau, corre-lhe sangue chinês e português, sobretudo, o sangue do clã português nativo de Macau é o que lhe corre no sangue. Fu fundou a Escola de Música Aces. Promove a cultura musical de Macau e cultiva talentos musicais profissionais, especialmente vocacionados para a cultura de banda. A espinha dorsal do BLADEMARK é Fu, é o baterista e membro fundador da banda. Em 2013, deixou a banda para se concentrar a promover a cultura musical. Regressou à banda em 2018 e vida no palco, usando sua experiência para influenciar a vida de outras pessoas no espírito de rock and roll!

João Francisco Pinto is TDM’s Portuguese News and Program Controller – a position he has held since 2005. His career spans more than two decades, during which time he has worked as a journalist in newspapers, radios and TV. Currently he is also the President of the Portuguese and English Press Association of Macau. Last year, he was elected as chairman of the ABU (Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union) News Group for a 3-year term. João Francisco Pinto has a degree in economics and several courses on journalism taken in Portugal, Macau and the US.

Julien Dykmans is a Graphic Designer from Belgium. He has been working in the film, TV and advertising industry for the last ten years. He has worked on blockbusters such as Harry Potter, Star Trek Beyond and Assassin’s Creed. In 2006 he completed his first short film, The Way of Hope. Wanting to pursue this creative avenue, he decided to embark upon a second journey in animated film by directing The Mechanical Waltz, which he wrote, directed and animated. This film won several awards worldwide. His film The Mechanical Waltz won in Macau, the prizes of “BEST FILM OF THE FESTIVAL” and “BEST ANIMATION” of the Sound & Image Challenge International Festival 2015.

Julien Dykmans nasceu na Bélgica, é designer gráfico. Nos últimos dez anos trabalha na indústria de produção de filmes e publicidade televisiva (TV) fazendo parte das equipas de produções de grandes sucessos fílmicos tais como, Harry Potter, Star Trek Beyond e Assassin’s Creed. Em 2006, produziu a sua primeira curta-metragem, The Way of Hope. Querendo continuar na área de produção de filmes de animação, decidiu criar a segunda curta-metragem The Mechanical Waltz, em que foi director e produtor. O referido filme The Mechanical Waltz foi premiado em vários países e venceu em Macau, os prémios “MELHOR FILME DO FESTIVAL” e “MELHOR ANIMAÇÃO”, no Sound & Image Challenge International Festival 2015.

Andra Tévy is native from Romania, lives and works in France since she was 18. She studied twice at the national French school, la FEMIS, first cinematography then script writing. She has been working on feature films during 15 years in the camera department while teaching and writing scripts that she begun to direct in 2013. Her short film THE WALL was presented in more than 50 international festivals, won more than 15 awards among which are the Best Fiction and the Public Favourite Award at Sound & Image Challenge International Festival 2015. It was also pre-nominated in 2016 at the French greatest cinema reward – César. Nowadays Andra works on her first feature film script, a black comedy about social pressure regarding our body shape: IF CINDERELLA KNEW...

Andra Tévy é de origem romena, mora e trabalha em França desde os 18 anos. Estudou na escolar nacional francesa la FEMIS succesivamente Cinematografia e Argumento. Trabalha há 15 anos em longas-metragens no Departamento de Câmara como professora e argumentista, começando a realizar em 2013. A curta-metragem THE WALL foi apresentada em mais de 50 festivais internacionais, vencendo 15 prémios sendo vencedora em Macau do prémio Melhor Ficção e Prémio da Audiência no Sound & Image Challenge International Festival 2015. Em 2016 foi nomeado para o Prémio César francês. Actualmente, está a escrever o argumento para a sua primeira longa-metragem SE A CINDERELA SOUBESSE… comédia negra acerca da pressão social relativamente à imagem do corpo.
Benjamin Hodges is an artist and academic originally from Virginia in the U.S. He studied in Florida and Texas which involved a PhD in Anthropology from the University of Texas at Austin. His research, teaching, and artwork span emergent and historical practices in visual culture and digital media. He is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication at the University of Macau.

Benjamin Hodges é artista e professor académico proveniente de Virgínia, Estados Unidos da América. Estudou na Flórida e no Texas, onde se doutorou em antropologia na Universidade do Texas, Austin. A sua investigação académica foca no ensino e trabalho artístico que abrange práticas emergentes e históricas em cultura visual e media digital. Actualmente é professor assistente no Departamento de Comunicação da Universidade de Macau.
Carlos Sena Caires was born in Funchal, Portugal. He is Dean of the Faculty of Creative Industries of the University of Saint Joseph (Macao, China), Associate Professor in Design for the University of Saint Joseph and Assistant Professor for the School of Arts of the Catholic University of Portugal (Porto, Portugal). From 2011 to 2016 he was the coordinator of the master in Sound and Image and the Post-graduate in Digital Design. He was also the chief editor of the Journal of Science and Technology of the Arts – CITARJournal – of the School of Arts (2010 – 2013). As a senior researcher, he was the coordinator of a Research Group of Digital Creativity at the CITAR Research Centre (2010 – 2016). Holding a PhD in Aesthetics, Science and Technology of the Arts from the University of Paris 8, France (2010) and a graduate degree in Graphic Design from the University of Madeira in Portugal (1994). His art projects focusing on interactive-video installations, interactive cinema, and digital art installations were exhibited in Portugal, Spain, France, Brazil, Canada, and Macao.

Carlos Sena Caires nasceu em Funchal, Portugal. É Director da Faculdade de Indústrias Criativas da Universidade de São José (Macau, China) e Professor Associado em Design e, Professor Auxiliar da Escola de Artes da Universidade Católica de Portugal (Porto, Portugal). De 2011 a 2016 foi coordenador do Mestrado em Som e Imagem e da Pós-graduação em Design Digital. Foi editor chefe do Jornal de Ciência e Tecnologia das Artes - CITARJournal (2010-2013). Enquanto investigador principal (2010-2016), foi coordenador do Grupo de Investigação em Criatividade Digital no CITAR Centro de Investigação em Ciência e Tecnologia das Artes. Doutorado em Estética, Ciência e Tecnologia das Artes pela Universidade de Paris 8, França (2010) e licenciado em Design Gráfico pela Universidade da Madeira, Portugal (1994). Os seus projectos artísticos são instalações de vídeo e cinema interactivo e instalações de arte digital, tendo sido exibidos em Portugal, Espanha, França, Brasil, Canadá e Macau.
Passionate about film making and art, Chan works as a an artist in creative areas such as graphic design and visual art. In 2017 Chan’s feature film “Passing Rain” was released. As a core member of local film group “Associacão de Audio-visual CUT” since 2003, Chan is a dedicated professional devoted to the promotion of film industry and culture. Chan published his edition of graphic anecdotes “Scenario” in 2012.

David Rouault is a professional classical musician, trumpeter who studied in Paris Superior Conservatory and played with the most notorious French and Asian symphonic orchestras. He participated in numerous recording in diferent styles and perform regularly as a soloist, in chamber music and within orchestras. He also gives classes and masterclasses in Europe and Asia. David is also a wine professional, columnist, giving oenological presentations and consulting.

David Rouault é um músico profissional de Trompete em música clássica. Estudou no Conservatório de Superior de Paris e tocou com músicos notáveis em orquestras sinfónicas francesas e asiáticas. Tem participado em inúmeras gravações e em diferentes estilos musicais. É solista em groupos de Câmara e Orquestras. Dá formação através de masterclasses na Europa e na Ásia. David é um professional de vinhos, consultor, colunista e faz apresentações enológicas.
João Cordeiro has been developing his artistic, scientific and professional work around the subject of sound, mostly as a researcher, educator, sound designer and musician. He has participated in several film productions as director, sound designer and animator.
Additionally, he has been a jury member, an executive producer and a board member in two film festivals in Europe and Asia (B&W and SIC). His career has developed further in academia teaching sound design (UCP and USJ) and doing research in the fields of soundscapes studies and sonic interaction design.

João Cordeiro tem desenvolvido o seu trabalho artístico, científico e profissional na área do som, quer como investigador, professor, músico ou designer de som. Participou em diversas produções cinematográficas com director, designer de som e animador. Foi jurado, produtor executivo e membro da direcção em diversos festivais de cinema na Europa e Ásia (B&W e SIC).
A sua carreira tem-se desenvolvido sobretudo na academia, ensinando design de som e fazendo investigação na área das paisagens sonoras e design de interação sonora.
João Cordeiro é mestre em Design de Som e doutorado em Ciência e Tecnologia das Artes.
João Nuno Brochado was born in 1983 in Porto, Portugal. He was quickly interested in photography and cinema at 9, while visiting the Moving Image Museum in London. At the age of 15, João created his first documentary about the S. João National Theatre for a school project. He graduated in Sound and Image from the School of Arts of the Catholic University of Portugal, and later got a Master Degree specializing in Cinema and Audiovisual. His final project "TAX FREE" was selected in more than 20 festivals and won several awards. In 2006 he did a New York Film Academy's workshop, and later became a teacher assistant. He also did an internship at Utopia Filmes studios, in Lisbon. In 2007, he teamed up with 3 colleagues to create Cimbalino Filmes studios in Porto. He directed and produced diferent projects: promotional films for brands like Vodafone, SuperBock, McDonalds, Renault, Salsa, Port Wine but also television shows, music videos and short-films like the awarded "Tokyo Porto 9 hours" and "Down to the Sea". He also participated in video mapping technique, for theatre plays, concerts and events. In 2014 João released his first feature documentary "A Man Sized Mountain" which was nº1 top sales and sold out after only 3 weeks. João started his academic career as a visiting professor in 2008 at the School of Arts of Catholic University of Portugal, and then in 2016 at the Faculty of Creative Industries of the University of Saint Joseph, in Macau.
João Nuno Brochado nasceu em 1983 no Porto, Portugal. Cedo despertou o interesse pela fotografia e pelo cinema e aos 9 anos após visitar o Museu da Imagem em Movimento, em Londres. Aos15 anos, realiza o seu primeiro documentário sobre o Teatro Nacional S. João como projecto da Escola. Obteve um Mestrado em Som e Imagem, especialização em Cinema e Audiovisual na Escola das Artes da Católica Porto. Fez realização em directo e cinema, e o projecto final "Paraíso Fiscal" que foi seleccionado em mais de 20 festivais vencendo vários prémios. Em 2006 frequentou a New York Film Academy e veio a ser professor -assistente dessa instituição. Estagiou na empresa Utopia Filmes em Lisboa. Em 2007 o seu espírito empreendedor, leva-o a criar a produtora Cimbalino Filmes, com 3 amigos no Porto, Portugal. Aqui dedicou-se à realização e produção de filmes promocionais para marcas tias como a Vodafone, Super Bock, McDonalds, Renault,Salsa e Vinho do Porto, programas televisivos, videoclipes, concertos e curtas-metragens: "Tóquio Porto 9 horas" e "Até ao Mar". Em 2014 lança o seu primeiro longo documentário "Uma Montanha do Tamanho do Homem", sobre a aldeia Drave, alcançando o 1º lugar em vendas esgotando em 3 semanas. Simultaneamente era professor visitante na Escola de Artes da Universidade Católica do Porto desde 2008 e desde 2016 na Faculdade de Indústrias Criativas da Universidade de São José, em Macau.
Lanka Bandaranayake is a producer, director and an actress from Sri Lanka. She started her stage drama career in 1998, which she earned several acting and costume designing national awards. She also produced and directed national award-winning short dramas. Lanka directed and produced her first short film “Tradition” in 2016, which was ofcially selected in Sound & Image Challenge International Festival 2017, an international short film festival in Macau. The film was screened in over 40 film festivals winning international and national awards. She has directed several short films since then.
Lanka is one of the juries for Fiction in Sound & Image Challenge International Festival 2018 and 2019, and was invited to curate a film screening session featuring short films by Sri Lankan female directors in the Festival of 2019.
Lanka Bandaranayake é productora, realizadora e atriz de Sri Lanka. Iniciou a sua carreira em 1998 e ganhou vários prémios nacionais de actuação e figurinos. Posteriormente, produziu e dirigiu peças de teatro nacionais vencedoras.
Em 2016, realizou e produziu a sua primeira curta-metragem “Tradição”, que foi selecionada e finalista no festival de curtas-metragens em Macau, Sound & Image Challenge International Festival 2017. Este filme foi exibido em mais de 40 festivais de cinema e obteve vários prémios nacionais e internacionais. Desde então, tem realizado vários curtas-metragens.
Malte Stein is an animation filmmaker and writer based in Berlin. In 2013, he graduated from the University of Film and Television Konrad Wolf in Potsdam Babelsberg with his film Blauer Traum. Before that, he studied dramaturgy and since his youth, he is active in comics, writing and music. His main focus is on independent animation film projects. His last film Flood (Flut) from 2018 was screened at more than 70 festivals and won 10 awards. This film won the Best Animation award for the Sound & Image Challenge International Festival 2018 in Macau. He is one of the juries for Animation films for the edition of 2019 of the said Festival.
Malte Stein é um realizador e escreve para filmes de animação e reside Berlim. Formou-se em 2013, na Universidade de Cinema e Televisão Konrad Wolf em Potsdam Babelsberg com seu filme de tese Blauer Traum. Estudou dramaturgia quando jovem, escreve, compõe música e faz banda desenhada. Dedica-se a projetos independentes de filmes de animação. Russian born Macau/Hong Kong based director. He is a graduate of NYU Tisch. School of The Arts with an MFA in Film Production. Maxim’s narrative short film 'Tricycle Thief' World Premiered at Toronto International Film Festival, won the 2015 Kodak Gold Award for best short film and has screened at numerous festivals worldwide. He has worked with numerous clients on commercials and advertisements including Zouk Singapore, Wynn Resorts, Pacha Macau and City of Dreams. He had his first solo exhibition in 2018 and his recent short film “Sampan” premiered in his birth town of Vladivostok the same year.
Nasceu em Vladivostok, Rússia. Vive em Macau desde 1993 onde aprendeu português, cantonense e inglês. Estudou na Tailândia e Inglaterra obtendo o seu MFA de Cinema na Tisch School of the Arts. A sua última curta metragem “O Ladrão do Tricíclo” teve estreia mundial no Festival Internacional de Cinema de Toronto ganhando o prémio 2015 Kodak de Ouro, e, “Sampan” que estreou na sua cidade natal, recentemente. Maxim tem trabalhado para clientes, em comerciais e publicidade, incluindo Zouk Singapore, Wynn Resorts, Pacha Macau e City of Dreams.
Ricardo Mata is a filmmaker and freelance editor in Macau. He was camera assistant for numerous short films in LA, edited a recent short film which was selected for The Short Film Corner of the Cannes Film Festival, and recorded sound for a feature film now in post production called Bloody Eyes. He has worked and studied in Los Angeles up until 2017, being a master's degree holder in Film and Media with experience in directing, editing, camera assistant and on set sound recording.

Ricardo Mata é realizador e editor em freelance e trabalhou como assistente de câmara em vários filmes em Los Angeles. Recentemente editou um filme que foi seleccionado para o Short Film Corner of the Cannes Film Festival. Gravou o som para longa-metragem Bloody Eyes agora em pós-produção. Trabalhou e estudou em Los Angeles, obtendo um Mestrado em Cinema e Media. Possui experiência em direcção, câmara, som e edição.
Rodrigo Rezende Meireles is a documentarist graduated in Cinema and Video at Centro Universitário UNA (Belo Horizonte, MG, Brazil). He was cameraman in a feature-length sport documentary Galo's day (directed by Cris Azzi and Luis Felipe Fernandes). Director of Photography in the fictional short Families (directed by Jofre Faria) and in the short documentary Azul Escuro (Directed by Gustavo Nolasco). "John the Baptist", his first short film as producer and director had a great success in festivals around the world receiving ten awards and was a finalist in Macau at the Sound & Image Challenge International Festival 2016. The short Documentary Anderson is his second work as producer and director and, also had a great acclamation and receiving seven awards and screened in big festivals such as HotDocs, Telluride Film Festival, among others. This film won the Best Documentary award of the Sound & Image Challenge International Festival 2018. Trindade is his third film and it will be released in 2020. Rodrigo is one of the jury for documentary for the edition 2019 of the said festival.

Rodrigo Meireles é formado em Comunicação Social com uma licenciatura em Cinema e Vídeo pelo Centro Universitário UNA (Belo Horizonte, MG), Brasil. Foi cinematógrafo na longa-metragem documentáio O dia do Galo (de Cris Azzi e Luiz Felipe Fernandes). Director de Fotografia da curta ficcional Famílias (de Jofre Faria) e da curta documentário Azul Escuro (de Gustavo Nolasco). O seu primeiro trabalho como productor e realizador foi a curta-metragem João Batista (2015), que teve um enorme sucesso em festivais recebendo dez prémios e foi finalista em Macau no Sound & Image Challenge International Festival 2016. Anderson é a segunda curta produzida e realizada por Rodrigo com sucesso recebendo 7 prémios, sendo exibida em grandes festivais como HotDocs, Telluride Film Festival e foi vencedora do prémio Melhor Documentário no Sound & Image Challenge International Festival 2019, em MacauRodrigo é um dos júris dos filmes Documentários da edição de 2019 do festival acima mencionado. O terceiro documentário Trindade, irá ser lançado em 2020.
Saki Farzana was born in 1984 at Joypurhat, Bangladesh. In 2007, she completed a Master in the Theatre Department of Rajshahi University and, completed a course on TV production making at NIMC (National Institute of Mass Communication). She is engaged with Theatre, TV, Radio and Films in acting, script writing and directing. As an independent filmmaker, she made her first film titled Chelemanushi-The Gray Line which was selected and screened in various international festivals (Russia, UK, America, Canada, Macau-China and 6 film festivals in India). In 2018, she was awarded the best woman director in 3rd International Short Film Festival, Pune. Afterwards, she made another short film titled The Park, the bench and the Girl as a part of #I stand for women movement. It is now streaming on an online streaming site of Bangladesh named Bioscope. Saki was invited to be a jury of the international short film Festival of Macau, Sound & Image Challenge International Festival 2019 where her short-film was ofcial selected and exhibited in the 2018 edition of this festival.

Saki Farzana nasceu em 1984 em Joypurhat, Bangladesh. Em 2007, completou um Mestrado no Departamento de Teatro da Universidade Rajshahi e um curso sobre produção de TV do NIMC (Instituto Nacional de Comunicação de Massas). Trabalha como atriz e realizadora em teatro, televisão, rádio, filmes e argumento. Como cineasta independente, fez a sua primeira curta-metragem A Linha Cinzenta (Chelemanushi), que foi selecionada e exibida em vários festivais internacionais (Rússia, Reino Unido, América, Canadá, Macau-China e em seis festivais de cinema na Índia. Em 2018, fui premiada como melhor realizadora no 3º Festival Internacional de Curtas-Metragens, Pune. A segunda curta O Parque, o banco e a Menina, foi uma causa de apoio # Eu defendo o movimento das mulheres, que está a ser transmitido em streaming on-line do Bangladesh chamado Bioscope.
Saki foi convidada para ser membro do júri de pré-seleção do Festival Internacional de Curtas de Macau “Sound & Image Challenge International Festival 2019”, onde a curta-metragem foi oficialmente selecionada e exibida na edição de 2018 deste festival.
Yves Etienne Sonolet is a French visual artist working with video and installation. He has settled in Macau since 2008. He has a strong interest for cultural identity and urban development that he expressed through numerous exhibitions, multimedia creations, and by adapting video on stage productions. Currently he is the supervisor of the Board of Supervisor of Art For All Society. He was the winner of Best Sound Design 2010 for his work “Salty Humid Chicken” and winner of the Best in Event Award for “Strange Occurrences by the Waterfront” of Sound & Image Challenge 2011.
In 2015 and 2019 he was Jury of the Sound & Image Challenge International Festival.
Yves Etienne Sonolet é um artista de artes visuais e multimédia. Estabelecido em Macau desde 2018, tem um enorme interesse pela identidade cultural e desenvolvimento urbano, expressando a sua criatividade através de vídeos, multimédia performativa e instalações artísticas. Actualmente é supervisor do Conselho da Direcção Art For All Society. Foi vencedor do Melhor Design de Som 2010 com o trabalho “Galinha Húmida Salgada” e do prémio Melhor do Evento 2011 com o trabalho “Estranhas Ocorrências por uma Frente de Água” do Sound & Image Challenge. Em 2015 e 2019, foi Júri do Sound & Image Challenge International Festival.

Durante os últimos 30 anos trabalhou como Assistente de Produção, Realizador, Produtor e Chefe de Departamento de Produção TV, tendo estado envolvido desde o início na Produção TV.
Miguel Khan, co-founder of the Sound & Image Challenge, graduated in Moving Image Design at Ravensbourne College of Design and Communication (UK). Worked in broadcast graphics, branding and advertising projects in United Kingdom and Portugal. Since 2006, as motion graphics designer and contributor to Macau’s visual communication scene, he has been working in the fields of marketing and corporate communication, designing multimedia contents and leading multimedia teams to produce a broad variety of video contents, and also the employment process of Digital Signage Display Systems in the gaming industry. He is currently multimedia director in a local operator. He has also been creating and collaborating with young local creatives, artists and with other industries, in a broad application of moving image design, from TV broadcast graphic contents and video advertising production to live VJ performances.
Miguel Khan é co-fundador do Sound & Image Challenge. Licenciciou-se em Moving Image Design pelo Ravensbourne College of Design and Communication, Inglaterra. Como independente, trabalhou em projectos de grafismo televisivo, branding e publicidade em Inglaterra e Portugal. Desde 2006 trabalha nas áreas de marketing e comunicação corporativa, criando conteúdos e gerindo equipas de multimédia, bem como a implementação de sistemas integrados de distribuição em rede (Digital Signage System) para a indústria do jogo. Actualmente, é director de multimédia numa operadora local e colabora com artistas e jovens locais de várias áreas criativas em aplicações para imagem em movimento televisiva e em genéricos gráficos em vídeos publicitários para espectáculos ao vivo.
Ray Granlund holds Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University in his native Houston (USA). After a 15-year career as a classical and electronic musician and composer, music and food journalist and cultural entrepreneur, he returned to academia, earning a Master of Arts with distinction in Cultural Policy, Relations and Diplomacy from Goldsmiths, University of London, for his research into international aspects of popular music and arts funding, and the phenomenon of gastrodiplomacy in food and cooking shows. He now resides in London and works as an editor and musicologist at White Label Productions, serving the classical music and original soundtrack recording industry. Ray is the co-founder of Sound & Image Challenge and a jury since.

Ray Granlund obteve os graus de Licenciatura e Mestrado em Música da Escola de Música Shepherd da Universidade de Rice, na sua cidade nativa de Houston nos Estados Unidos da América. Após uma carreira de 15 anos como músico e compositor de música clássica e electrónica, jornalista de cultura e gastronomia, e empreendedor cultural, decidiu regressar aos estudos, recebendo o Mestrado de Artes com distinção em Cultura Política, Relações e Diplomacia da Goldsmith, Universidade de Londres, pelos seus trabalhos de investigação onde estudou relações internacionais no âmbito do financiamento das Artes e da Música, assim como o fenómeno de gastrodiplomacia presente em programas de televisão sobre gastronomia e culinária. Actualmente reside em Londres, onde trabalha como editor e musicólogo na White Label Productions, uma agência de apoio à indústria de gravação de música clássica e de bandas sonoras originais. Ray é co-fundador do Sound & Image Challenge e júri desde sempre.
