Interior Design.

We design for possibilities. We take a global perspective on the future of design in combination with our connection to our local communities. Our projects promote wellness, inclusion and flexibility to ensure that we do not design just for the moment. We push our design thinking boundaries through research, observation and experience to develop truly adaptable spaces. We call it ‘in-between thinking’.

We know people yearn for community and connection. Our design approach enables places to grow and support this endeavor. We delve into our client’s needs to create custom environments that support belonging, productivity, creativity, teamwork and innovation.

Lifescape™

As cities become more densely populated, the ground-level experience plays a crucial role in our well-being. It is where we interact, engage with culture, and connect with our communities and surroundings.

Our placemaking approach helps clients rebrand and reposition existing properties, city streets, and neighborhoods, or develop entirely new master-planned communities. Through dynamic programming and ground-level activation, we seamlessly integrate projects into the broader community, shaping inspiring destinations that foster connection and create lasting memories. Our awardwinning team has helped clients attract a diverse mix of tenants, enhance property value, and enrich the surrounding urban landscape.

With our Lifescape™ philosophy, we reveal and reimagine underutilized spaces, transforming them into sources of inspiration. Taking a holistic design approach, we consider the experience of individuals, operators, and the broader community. Our multidisciplinary team of architects and designers bridges the gap between interiors and exteriors—integrating storefronts, lobbies, streets, parklets, and laneways to craft dynamic, engaging places. Beyond the physical environment, we curate the intangible elements of place—art, performance programming, wayfinding, soundscaping, and animation strategies—to create immersive and meaningful experiences.

Master Planning & Urban Design.

Like exceptional architecture, great planning drives transformation. It introduces innovative ways of living and has the profound ability to enhance lives. Our approach to every planning project is guided by this philosophy—crafting spaces that deliver the best possible human experience.

Our urban design and master planning projects span across the globe, shaping urban sites, communities, and even entire cities. From educational, residential, commercial, industrial, and healthcare precincts, we design comprehensive environments that foster connectivity and bring your vision and business goals to life.

We collaborate with you to make the invisible, visible. From inception to completion, we create value from this “in-between thinking” to discover the connection between people and place. Explore our portfolio, the stories behind our projects and the people at Kasian that made them happen.

Planning, Design & Compliance (PDC)

Procuring design services through the Public-Private Partnership (P3) or Alternative Financing and Procurement (AFP) process is a structured, long-term, and complex undertaking. As a sponsor, you need confidence that your requirements are met while mitigating the risks inherent in the process. That’s why you need a trusted advisor—one who prioritizes your best interests and those of your stakeholders at every stage.

With extensive experience leading the Planning, Design, and Conformance (PDC) scope for some of Canada’s largest and most recent development projects, we are your ideal partner for architecture, planning, and design

compliance. Having worked successfully on both sides of the P3/AFP process, we offer compliance services across BC, Ontario, Nova Scotia, and Saskatchewan, spanning all public service sectors.

Our approach is different. We foster collaboration at every stage of the conformance process, including RFP Document Development, the RFP Open Period, and Post-Financial and Commercial Close (Construction Phase). Whether in a Design-Build-Finance-Maintain (DBFM) or Design-Build-Finance (DBF) procurement model, we ensure a seamless, strategic, and compliant process.

/08 Relevant Projects.

Red Crow Community College

We learned that for the Blackfoot, everything has a spirit. We took this into account when we sourced natural building materials: creating spaces that holistically approached inclusivity, like the large, East-facing entrance; catalyzed areas for counselling and the transfer of knowledge from Elders; and designed original indoor and outdoor teaching spaces that incorporated the cardinal directions and natural elements, among other culturally rooted features. Layered sustainability, landscape architecture and climate resilience is integrated throughout the building’s design.

Learnings from the Blackfoot culture are interwoven throughout the project. The campus includes a central gathering atrium, kitchen, childcare centre, a round room (a functional spiritual centre for Elders), and a gymnasium that can be used for cultural dance celebrations, funerals, weddings and other events. There are dedicated spaces for art and cultural makers. The team is developing a program to incorporate local artists’ work throughout the campus.

Relevant Projects. Town of Stony Plain Library

About 25 kilometres west of Edmonton lies the town of Stony Plain. Known for its rich western history, summer festivals, and some of the most beautiful and plentiful mural art in the province, the town has grown to a population of 18,000 people.

The town’s small library was running out of space, and staff were no longer able to create sufficient community programming to meet growing demand. They needed more room. The town purchased the main floor of a sevenstorey mixed-use senior living project on Main Street. With a unique opportunity to integrate the multi-generational facility above, the new library had found a home. Our education & research team were selected through a competitive RFP process as the lead designers for the project. It was an honour to help Stony Plain residents discover the creative freedom an intuitively designed library can provide.

Relevant Projects. UBC Okanagan Arts and Science Centre & Charles Fipke Building

In 2010, Okanagan College, located in Kelowna, transitioned to university status creating a new campus for the University of British Columbia, UBC Okanagan (UBCO). Transitioning to a university was key to the academic institution’s growth plans, and new campus facilities were required to sustain the faculty and students that would soon be arriving. The UBC Campus Planning Team, together with UBC Properties Trust, came to us with the vision to build a world-class, campus precinct that enabled their academic community to flourish. They wanted to offer an integrated learning experience across the Arts and Science faculties to build interdisciplinary connections between faculties, students and staff to foster, teaching, learning, research and innovation.

Honouring Indigenous Communities Through Thoughtful Design

Kasian Architecture recognizes that The City of Red Deer is situated on the traditional lands governed by Treaty No. 6 and Treaty No. 7, as well as a historically significant Métis gathering site. In alignment with The City of Red Deer’s commitment to working alongside Indigenous Peoples, we are dedicated to fostering a welcoming and inclusive community that respects and celebrates Indigenous heritage.

Our approach integrates Indigenous symbolism and design elements in a meaningful and authentic way. Through collaboration with local Indigenous communities, Elders, and knowledge keepers, we ensure that our designs reflect the rich cultural narratives and traditions of the land. This includes:

• Incorporating Indigenous Art and Symbolism – Thoughtfully integrating motifs, patterns, and materials that reflect the cultural identity and history of the land’s original stewards.

• Respectful Consultation and Engagement – Actively involving Indigenous voices in the design process to create spaces that honour their heritage and serve the broader community.

• Sustainable and Culturally Responsive Design – Applying Indigenous knowledge of the land in sustainable architecture, fostering spaces that reflect ecological harmony and cultural resilience.

By embracing these principles, Kasian Architecture, in partnership with The City of Red Deer, aims to create environments that not only serve their functional purpose but also stand as symbols of reconciliation, respect, and shared history.

Red Deer, like much of Alberta, is situated on Treaty 7 land, the traditional territory of the Blackfoot, Tsuu T’ina and Stoney Nakoda Peoples, and the central Alberta region falls under Treaty 6, traditional Métis, Cree and Saulteaux territory.
