All’interno di questo spazio-tempo discontinuo, in cui tutto scorre velocemente in un sempiterno hic et nunc (il “nowism”), l’opera di Calixto Ramírez si pone controcorrente in quanto non si abbandona affatto al flusso impetuoso di questa “modernità liquida”, per usare la fortunata etichetta coniata dal noto sociologo Zygmund Bauman, ma al contrario punta a ridare sostanza, a “risolidificare” quei legami, a volte nascosti, a volte contraddittori, che uniscono le persone alle cose, le persone ai luoghi, i luoghi alla storia.

Di qui l’utilizzo da parte dell’artista di una pluralità di linguaggi e di mezzi espressivi diversificati, atti a fissare la sua riflessione su un supporto che sia al contempo condivisione e testimonianza della propria esperienza. In altre parole, Calixto non si limita all’uso di un codice rappresentativo specifico, né tanto meno affida a un unico medium la possibilità di “estrarre” dal proprio sguardo interiore le forme più idonee per esprimersi, ma adotta sempre diverse “grammatiche” avvalendosi in maniera disinvolta di mezzi diversi (video, fotografia, installazione, pittura ecc.). Ne sono a riprova i differenti risultati estetici raggiunti nelle precedenti edizioni di Cuatro Pasos. In quella napoletana, ad esempio, l’artista messicano ha concretizzato la sua “passeggiata” in sei lavori di varia natura: una installazione costituita da cartoni e teli stesi sul pavimento e segnati da sagome di oggetti vari che rimanda ai tanti venditori ambulanti presenti nella città; una stampa fotografica composta da sei dettagli di panni stesi, ben noti cliché dei “bassi” di Napoli; un’altra installazione composta da un secchio pieno di vongole e da uno scarpone in ferro, esplicito riferimento ai pescivendoli dei mercati rionali; una scultura di bronzo composta da tre mani che porgono altrettanti cappelli rovesciati coi colori della bandiera italiana, rappresentante i poveri e i mendicanti; una

time to time according to the places visited. This is what leads the artist to use a variety of languages and diversified expressive means, all aimed at fixing his thoughts on a support that both shares and testifies to his own experience.

In other words, Calixto does not limit himself to using a specific representational code, and even less does he entrust a single medium with the possibility of “extracting” from his own interior view the best-adapted forms for expressing himself; instead, he always adopts diverse “grammars” and makes free use of various means (for example, video, photography, installations, and painting). This is testified to by the different aesthetic results arrived at in the previous editions of Cuatro Pasos. In the Neapolitan one, for instance, the artist concretised his “walk” in six works of various kinds: an installation consisting of an installation consisting of fabrics lay down on the floor with silhouettes of various objets marked by dust that allude to the many hawkers in the city; a photographic print consisting of six details of hanging laundry, a well-known cliché for “downtown” Naples; another installation consisting of a bucket full of mussels and an iron shoe, an explicit reference to the fish sellers in the local markets; a bronze sculpture composed of three hands that proffer the same number of upturned hats with the colours of the Italian flag, representing the poor and the beggars; a yellow and red canvas cut through by an axe that supports an undershirt, a symbol of the fight for work and/or of the blood feuds between the city’s clans; and a wall of bricks marked at the centre by a round indentation that represents the worn and abandoned architecture of the alleys where Neapolitan children run around and play football. And finally there was a video titled Liberazione in which can be seen the artist fighting with a white sheet, a tribute to the battle for freedom from the Nazi occupation during the Second World War. In Trieste, instead, Calixto plumbed the soul of the city with the language of (at times even ferocious) irony. The show began with a site-specific work titled Chiuso (Closed): this was the glass entrance door wholly covered with sheets of newspapers, and with a LED sign with the word “open”, a reference to the many shops in the area run by Chinese people; there then followed the installation Nos han dado la tierra (They Have Given us the Earth), five trolleys full of earth, clothes, and various objects mixed together, a work inspired by the old city port, the transit place for old and new migrants; Sei canne da pesca, another installation, one alluding to the many fishing rods that can be seen in various seaside places around the city; two large canvases painted in oils with the reds, ochre, and greens typical of the buildings in the working-class areas of Trieste; the sculpture Linea de ceniza (Line of Ash), consisting of a glass cylinder filled with the ash of the cigarettes smoked by the Nos han dado la tierra, 2016, valigie, terra, vestiti e oggetti vari, dimensioni variabili

At a formal level, this “new beauty” is to be seen in a series of photos centred on the various kinds of ground in Milan, a ground which can basically be assigned to two categories: the dignified kind found in the city’s important buildings and spaces (churches, historical buildings, and arcades), and more “prosaic” kind to be found along ordinary roads (tarmac, grids, and drains). To be more precise, we are dealing with an extremely astute “Blow-up” of flooring “enriched” by the presence of the confetti which the artist had picked up from the streets and arranged in endlessly different ways, at times following a rigid scheme, at others in a freer manner. Calixto then intervened on the landscape in a discreet manner, limiting himself to add a simple note of colour and drawing new and delicate geometrical figures that were superimposed on preexisting motifs with only an ephemeral impact (with the first gust of wind, in fact, the design quickly vanished without a trace). The outcome of this operation was a double one: on the one hand the intrinsic qualities of the individual floorings were enhanced (both the important ones, such as those with mosaics, the tesserae of which corresponded successfully to the tiny discs of paper, and the drains where the same coloured pieces become a kind of luminous pixel able to redeem them from their anonymous industrial “drabness”). On the other hand, the floorings were, so to say, “rediscovered” by the public, which is normally too distracted 14

Più correttamente però, si dovrebbe qui citare un’altra “opera” di Munari molto più affine a quella di Calixto, ossia Aria (Far vedere l’aria) del 1969, una vera e propria performance in cui il poliedrico artista meneghino lanciava da una torre di Piazza Duomo in centro a Como dei pezzetti di carta nel tentativo di visualizzare l’aria.

Al di là di questi involontari rimandi, ciò che colpisce in questo lavoro è, ancora una volta, la capacità dell’artista di rinnovare costantemente il proprio orizzonte interpretativo. A differenza dei video realizzati per i Cuatro Pasos napoletani e triestini, dove il corpo dell’artista è fortemente presente come elemento portante dell’architettura performativa, qui egli preferisce sottrarsi alla vista della camera da presa per fare emergere con più evidenza l’azione in sé. In Cuatro Pasos | Milano insomma, Calixto fa sì che chi guarda sia strettamente concentrato sul processo in corso senza essere distratto da elementi esterni. Questo però non vuol dire che la sua visione sia scevra di una componente “pittoresca”, anzi essa non solo è poeticamente presente ma è, per di più, di natura altamente ludica.

Il coriandolo in movimento, infatti, oltre a darci il senso di fragilità del gesto, trasmette inevitabilmente un senso di gioiosità puerile che va a toccare le corde intime di una memoria privata e collettiva insieme, legata all’infanzia.

Per concludere, i “quattro passi milanesi” rappresentano un viaggio inedito in una delle città più iconiche del nostro Paese per quanto riguarda l’aspetto della modernità che è rivelazione e illuminazione, scoperta e riscoperta.

Se da un lato lavoro con gli spazi iconici della città, in cui posso trovare mosaici incantevoli e colorati, tipici del marmo italiano, dall’altro opero per strada, con il suo pavimento e i suoi tombini grigi, dove però è possibile scovare motivi geometrici con un certo fascino. Gli interventi sono realizzati con i coriandoli raccolti lungo la stessa via e già utilizzati nel corso di feste di carnevale. Uso un materiale che è già diventato spazzatura ed è privo di valore, trattandosi di carta riciclata e sporca. A partire da questi piccoli cerchi ho cominciato a giocare con semplici composizioni geometriche che lentamente hanno spezzato la stessa geometria. E’ evidente che le composizioni sono in dialogo con la città: in alcune, come sui marmi, il mio lavoro diviene un ornamento della grandezza architettonica meneghina. I coriandoli si mimetizzano con lo spazio più che spezzarlo, come invece accade nelle composizioni su strada.

Devo inoltre segnalare il peso storico dei coriandoli per la città di Milano, qualcosa di apparentemente sconosciuto non solo ai milanesi, ma alla maggior parte delle persone. Se essi sono privi di valore, perché dovremmo indagare

Going back to Cuatro Pasos/Milan, we can see how the ideas of eleven years ago reappear matured by the passage of time. It is normal for an artist (even if he doesn’t want to) to present the same piece in a different way. These repetitions in our language, however subtle they may be, become stronger through their very repetition.

The photographic series with confetti, Entre el diálogo y la resistencia, delves into the idea of resistance to the monumentality offered by a city like Milan by looking down to find another kind of beauty that goes against the touristic view and the acceleration of contemporary life. I need to point out that the pieces created in 2006 were made at a time when Smartphones didn’t exist, so enslavement to the small screen was not common. In this new series, looking down is not intended as enslavement, but as the freedom for where we should be looking. Maybe that’s why, inside the gallery, the works will be presented on the wall, to reverse the look.

Another point is about the space where I am working and the material I am using, about their contrast with each other, and the new value given to the confetti. On the one hand I work with the iconic spaces of the city, ones where we can find very beautiful and colorful mosaics, characteristic of the splendors of Italy; on the other hand I work in the street, the pavement and its gray manhole covers, but these are places where we can find geometric patterns of a certain beauty. Here the importance of the point and the circle comes into play; since the triangle and the square are stable, the circle is in movement. Therefore the video begins with an abstract image/landscape which is interspersed with these points. We could read it almost like a drawing in the air, where the resistance of the almost invisible spider web is the key in an ephemeral, fragile and subtle game.

Biography

Calixto Ramírez Correa was born on March 24, 1980 in the border city of Reynosa Tamaulipas. He studied a degree in Visual Arts at the National School of Painting, Sculpture and Engraving La Esmeralda during the period 2004-2008, obtaining an exchange with the Faculty of Arts at the National University of Colombia in 2007.

In 2009 studied under Master Jannis Kounellis.

He has exhibited individually in Mexico — at the Museum of Mexico City, the Carrillo Gil Museum of Art, and Yautepec Gallery — in Italy at the Museo del ‘900 Castel Sant’Elmo, as well as the United States, Austria, Croatia and France. He has participated in group exhibitions in Mexico — including the Palacio de Bellas Artes —, as well as in Argentina, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Colombia, France, Germany, Greece, Holland, Italy, Slovenia, Spain, U.S.A. and Uruguay.

In 2015, he was the winner of the Level 0 prize in ArtVerona and a resident at Casa Wabi, Oaxaca, México. In 2014, he was among the 10 finalists of the ArtVerona award, selected in the XVI Biennal of Photography, I Biennal of Landscape, and I Biennal of the Borders, all of them, in México. In 2012 he was awarded the acquisition prize at the Biennial of Emerging Art in Monterrey Mexico, in 2010 he was selected into the Salon of Photography of Nuevo León, México. In 2009 he was selected in the residency program of Fundación Marcelino Botín in Spain and won the Jóvenes Creadores grant from Tamaulipas, México. His works can be found in both public and private collections in Spain, the U.S. Italy and Mexico.

Calixto Ramírez Correa è nato il 24 marzo 1980 nella città di confine di Reynosa (Tamaulipas, Messico). Dal 2004 ha studiato arti visive alla Scuola Nazionale di Pittura, Scultura e Incisione Le Esmeralda, dove si è laureato nel 2008, ottenendo uno scambio con la Facoltà di Arti dell’Università Nazionale della Colombia nel 2007.

Nel 2009 ha studiato sotto la guida del M° Jannis Kounellis.

Ha tenuto mostre personali in Messico – presso il Museo di Città del Messico e il Carrillo Gil Museum of Art – in Italia – al Museo del ‘900 di Castel Sant’Elmo di Napoli – così come negli Stati Uniti, in Austria, Croazia e Francia. Ha partecipato a esposizioni collettive in Messico – tra cui una mostra tenutati presso il Palacio de Bellas Artes –, in Argentina, Austria, Belgio, Canada, Colombia, Francia, Germania, Grecia, Olanda, Italia, Slovenia, Spagna, Stati Uniti e Uruguay.

Nel 2015 ha vinto il premio Level 0 ad ArtVerona e una residenza d’artista presso Casa Wabi a Puerto Escondido (Oaxaca, Messico). Nel 2014 è stato tra i 10 finalisti del premio acquisto di Art Verona ed è stato selezionato per la XVI Biennale di Fotografia, I Biennale del Paesaggio e I Biennale dei Confini, tutte in Messico. Nel 2012 gli è stato conferito il premio acquisto alla Biennale di Emerging Art a Monterrey, in Messico, e nel 2010 è stato selezionato nel Salone della Fotografia di Nuevo León, Messico.

Nel 2009 è stato selezionato nel programma di residenza della Fundación Marcelino Botín in Spagna e ha vinto la borsa di studio Jóvenes Creadores a Tamaulipas, in Messico. Sue opere sono conservate in collezioni pubbliche e private in Spagna, Stati Uniti, Italia e Messico.
