SNOWY DREAMS IN LAPLAND We don’t need a drum roll to feel the tension in the room. If you’re looking for somewhere to spend your Christmas which offers beauty, history, culture and festivities, then the obvious choice is the home of Father Christmas himself - Lapland. Lapland is the northernmost part of Finland, and as such, it’s usually very snowy during the winter - so wrapping up warm is a must. The Christmas market at Lapland is set at the arctic circle, 5 miles from Rovaniemi, and is the region’s biggest Christmas attraction. Called the ‘Santa Claus Village’, the Christmas market includes plenty of shop, stalls, and exhibitions to amuse grown-ups and children alike; as well as the usual décor and craft stalls, there are plenty of places to munch on unique Scandinavian nibbles and to pick up festive gifts for relatives. There’s even a Santa’s Post Office, from which you can send real mail, and Santa Park, and
underground amusement park. The Christmas market at Lapland is an excellent choice for families, combining fun, frolics and festivity into one attractive package. That’s all we have time for today. Though there’s much more to say about Cologne’s Christmas market, it’ll just have to wait. We’ll see you next month - when we’re feeling a little more festive with a new wintery recommendation.

Too many organs are being burned or buried... harsh but true... if we haven’t had the conversation with our loved ones about it, and the unfortunate were to happen, then this is the cold reality.... There are more than 10,000 people on the transplant list in the UK. On average 1,000 people will die each year, that’s 3 a day, due to the lack of organs. Fiona Pretty, donated her kidney on 19th Sept 2012 altruistically. She spent 9 months going back and forward to the Edinburgh Royal for endless tests to make sure she was of good health and that she would not be affected in any way living with just 1 kidney.
During this time she saw the dedication of the staff and a lot of sick patients in the waiting rooms and subsequently after her surgery she met some very sick people in the ward! This is why she was inspired to do more!
Fiona would also like to thank the evening entertainment which was provided by Two-Smooth playing sophisticated Jazz at the beginning of the night when everyone was enjoying the cocktails, this was then followed by the the one and only Craig McMurdo, who provided the entertainment during the meal, and then for all the eighties groupies we had Party Fears Three. DJ Dave Quinn kept everyone dancing the night away till 2am.
On the 20th September 2013 a charity fund raising raising event was held in the Sheraton Grand in Edinburgh. (one year and one day since Fiona gave her Kidney) The event raised over £19k pounds for Edinburgh Royal Infirmary transplant unit. Fiona would like to thank everyone who donated auction prizes, the sponsors and to everyone who bought ticket for this fabulous fund raising event.

Before the end of the year, economists recently indicated that savers waiting to take the benefits from their pension pot could see hundreds of pounds trimmed off the best pay-out rates on annuities, which over 400,000 people use each year to turn their pension into retirement income. Should the warnings prove correct, the pay-out from say a £100,000 pot would fall from around £6,000 a year today to around £5,760 gross income by December. This is bad news for those of you in your 60s who may have delayed taking your pension in the hope that pay-out rates would increase in the coming months. Annuity rates have fallen from 15% in the early Nineties to just 6% today for a healthy 65-year-old, damaging the retirement plans of many approaching retirement. Annuities are backed by UK government bonds, commonly known as gilts. The pay-out offered to retirees is, therefore, generally determined by the general rate of return (or yield) on these assets which according to Capital Economics will face “downward pressure” until January 2014 due to falling levels of inflation in the UK. Predicting 0.5%
will be wiped off the return on ten-year government bonds. Such a reduction is likely to translate into a 4% fall in annuity rates, past trends suggest.
