NEW FREEDOMS, BUT BEWARE THE TAX-MAN...
From April, those aged 55 or over using the new pension freedoms legislation to access their pension pots run the potential risk of a large tax bill, but with some clever planning, it can all be avoided. I would personally warn against retirees raiding their entire pension funds post-April when the new rules come into force. But those who are keen to get their hands on their money though may not fully understand the tax implications due to a lack of understanding of marginal tax rates. Marginal tax rates are the rates of tax paid on income, such as salary and for example, money taken from a pension. While 25% of a pension pot can be taken tax free, commonly known as the “taxfree lump sum” but technically called the ‘pension commencement lump sum’, the rest of the money is taxed like income tax. Everyone has an annual personal allowance, set at £10,600 in the 2015/16 tax year, on which they pay no income tax. So retirees can take their 25% tax-free lump sum and another £10,600 without incurring an income tax bill, providing they are not receiving income from elsewhere. Any income taken from a pension, or elsewhere, that is greater

than £10,600 will be subject to income tax, or taxed at marginal rates. A 20% income tax charge will be levied on pension withdrawals up to £31,785, minus the personal allowance. A further 40% tax will be levied between £31,785 and £150,000. My concern is there may be those who would access their pension cash without realising these tax consequences. Dangers include people taking their whole pension in cash, and possibly running out of money later on, as well as paying too much tax initially and many could even be catapulted into the higher rate tax bracket. For example, a person aged 55 or over who is still working and earning £33,288 – the average wage for a pre-retiree - would only need to take just over £20,000 from their pension in order to find themselves paying 40% income tax. In order to avoid falling into a tax-trap, discuss you objectives with a financial adviser who will walk you through the pro-cons of taking money from pension funds. For example, we all want to be smooth and hair free for the beach but what’s the best method of removal? • SHAVING - quick, easy & cheap but creates stubble, rashes, and doesn’t last long. • CREAMS - cheap-ish but messy, smelly and usually not very effective. • LASER - effective but painful and expensive. • WAXING - quick, effective but can be a bit ouchy. (you get used to it!) If you’ve never waxed before, don’t expect baby smooth after your first time. It takes around 3 or 4 waxes to really start seeing the benefits, so start soon and stick with it! Beef Goulash in a Dash
INGREDIENTS 300g (10.5 oz) stir-fry Scotch Beef using rump or minute steaks, cut into strips 300g (10.5 oz) new or waxy potatoes, thickly sliced 1 tbsp olive oil 100g (3.5 oz) button mushrooms, halved 2 tsp paprika 500g jar tomato based cooking sauce
METHOD
300ml (0.5pt) hot beef stock
1. Blanch the potatoes in boiling water for 3-4
2 tbsp natural yoghurt Freshly chopped parsley or chives (optional)
minutes then drain thoroughly. Meanwhile heat the oil in a wok or large frying pan and stir-fry the beef for 2-3 minutes or until browned.
2. Add the mushrooms, paprika and potato slices, cook for a further minute.
