PursuIT Marketing hosted the Beatson Cancer Charity Ball at the Glasgow Marriott Hotel on Saturday 18th May 2013, and the glamorous red carpet event raised tens of thousands for the Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Care Centre. With Clyde One's Gina McKie as compere and an amazing line-up of entertainment including stilt-walkers, fire-breathers, pipers, jazz musicians, dancers, 5-piece band, female vocalist and Clyde One's DJ George Bowie, the 350 attendees had a night to remember.

The guests were impeccably turned out to enjoy the evening, not surprising with trendsetters from the likes of Catherine’s of Partick and Russell Cowie hairdressers in attendance. The Chancellor recently announced that millions of children whose savings are locked into the obsolete Child Trust Fund will soon be able to switch this money into newer Junior ISA’s.

qualified for a Child Trust Fund. Those born since this scheme was scrapped have been able to invest in a Junior ISA, as have older children who were born prior to the start of the scheme. But those born in the “CTF-years” have not, until now, been able to invest in a Junior Isa alongside a CTF.

Both vehicles appear very similar, in as much as they both allow parents to save up to £3,600 a year, tax free, on behalf of their child, via cash accounts –run by a banks or building society’s – or a more actively managed investment. Savings cannot be accessed until children reach their 18th birthday and few investment groups offer Child Trust Funds because when they launched all providers had to offer a “stakeholder” version, which invested in the stock market, and moved assets into safer havens, such as cash and bonds, as the child approached their 18th birthday.

Transfers will soon be allowed between child trust funds and the more flexible Junior ISA, which will offer a far wider choice of investment more suited to long-term saving. Relying on interest rates from cash accounts, with the current derisory interest rates likely to remain for the next three years or so, will see returns well below inflation.

Many providers did not want to offer this as they had to open CTF for parents who had just £250 to invest. This made them uneconomical for fund managers to run. With Junior ISA’s however, providers are free to set their own minimum investment limits. Children who were born between September 2002 and December 2010

ill he or won’t he? It’s the question we have become accustomed to asking every year ahead of Wimbledon; hoping that maybe, just maybe, one of our own might actually win the title. And with Andy Murray as our hope, the people of SW19’s ‘Murray Mound’ have a very good chance of seeing that hope turn to joy. The 26 year old Dunblane man has been chipping away for several years now, trying to reach the heights of world tennis; up against real greats like Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic. Many have claimed, and with good reason, that Murray is unfortunate to be playing out his career at the same time as such a formidable trio. However, Murray, after years of hard graft and playing second fiddle, can now lay claim to being up there with those greats. His determination and desire to be the best has given him that right.

Pure unadulterated football talk is – in our eyes – the best kind of football talk. You could see us cover anything from the worst player in Arbroath to the best player in the world.

After winning the US Open and Olympic Gold last year, Murray has shown he can compete with the big boys and win the big tournaments. Up to then he had reached the final of the Australian Open on three occasions, the US Open once and Wimbledon once, this appearance coming last year when he succumbed to Roger Federer over four sets. Murray, despite rumblings of a back injury during his recent win at Queen’s Club, currently sits as joint second favourite for this year’s title alongside Rafael Nadal, with Novak Djokovic the favourite. Roger Federer, seeking a record eighth Wimbledon title, sits behind Murray and Nadal as fourth favourite. Either of these four could win the title so Murray is in with as good a chance as any of them if he can perform to his best. There are other quality players out there, including Jo Wilfred Tsonga and Juan Martin del Potro, but realistically this is a battle between the top four, the world’s best.
