a time when young men’s fancy lightly turns to thoughts of love. So says poet Alfred Tennyson.
That’s all fine and good what young men fancy, but this spring’s Fresh Start issue features women whose thoughts have turned to reinventing themselves, discovering a different way to live and work, or a new way to grow. And what’s not to love about that?
Spring means nothing if not hope. Hope the weather gets warmer, hope our gardens burst with produce and flowers, hope for new beginnings. Hope Helder—our aptly-named cover feature—knows a thing or three about starting anew. After placing her son up for adoption when she was in college, her journey of which she wrote a book about, Hope traveled from one end of the globe to the next to pursue her career, all the while staying in contact with the adoptive mother and son. Returning to and staying in Minnesota wasn’t on her bingo card, but a chance meeting with the man who would become her husband changed all that. Layer those experiences with a startling weight loss of over 160 lbs., and becoming addiction free, even Hope says the woman in the mirror is someone new. Fancy that.
Don’t we all, at some point, envision something different for ourselves now and again? Or maybe we’ve strayed far afield from where we thought we’d go or who we truly are deep down. Speaking for myself I’ve stayed true to what I’ve always wanted to do as a career in the creative world. However, I wisely abandoned my preteen fantasy of being one of the dancers on the Carol Burnett Show once I realized that took athletic skill and coordination— two things I am sorely lacking. I can herky jerk around the office to my fave tunes, though. A term by definition that means “unpredictable movement or style, lacking smoothness or grace, and is not easy to follow.” So no matter what moves you make, they’re the right ones. Works for me.
For Kelly Simmons, the well-being of others is what works for her. But sometimes life gets in the way and there are decisions to be made. Her initial dream of a private counseling practice couldn’t get legs under it due to a variety of professional and personal hurdles. Even after experiencing success for over a decade in homecare sales, she felt the pull to revisit her initial passion. Opportunity came knockin’ during a serendipitous encounter with the owner of Mending Spirits Therapy, and now Kelly’s dreams are rockin.’
From dollars and cents to fashion sense, accountant Lelia Leonhardt made two incongruous worlds stylishly collide. Lelia Leonhardt banked on her accounting job to seize the chance to strut her business stuff as the new owner of Generations Boutique in St. Peter. Seeing the move as the potential to build something that offered a welcoming shopping experience to all women, as well as a way to become more involved in the St. Peter business scene, Lelia is stepping out of her comfort zone and walking the walk.
“Unlike anywhere else in Southern Minnesota” is the town of Madelia’s slogan for a reason. I found out why for myself recently after spending part of the day there chatting with Embars Cocktail Bar and Lounge owner Kelsey Cooling, who shares her first person account of opening a unique gathering place in this friendly small community. Embars is a hip, yet comfortable space that offers specialty drinks and themed fun nights to meet up with the gang. Madelia, having endured so much over the past nearly 10 years after the fire that took out a good portion of their downtown in 2016, has risen from the ashes to offer an old-fashioned Mayberry feel, but with a modern, funky vibe. Stroll through our Madelia pages and explore what this gem has to offer.
A fresh start takes guts, determination and knowing yourself. So herky jerk like no one is watching, and live whatever life you fancy.

Hope Helder has learned what it’s like to start over.
The Mankato-based woman has journeyed around and out of the country in search of something that would make her feel whole, only to end up back where she started, which is where she needed to be.
Hope was born in Iowa, but raised for the most part in Minnesota. She attended Concordia University in St. Paul where she studied sports management and political science.
“I had a dream of being a sports manager or sports agent, maybe negotiating partnerships and contracts,” she explained. “I always wanted to be a lawyer.”
However, she shied away from law school after she saw how expensive the undergrad education was.
Once she had a degree in hand, Hope got into door-to-door sales for Direct TV and internet around the Twin Cities area.
“That was my first start in sales and I said, ‘if you can knock on 50 people’s doors a day and get told no sometimes 50 times a day, you can pretty much do anything,’” she said with a laugh.
On a whim, she decided to relocate as she was ready to leave Minnesota and explore. A friend of hers asked if she would move out to the Washington, D.C. area.
“We packed up our cars and went to D.C. I had an aunt who lived in the area so I stayed with her while I started working,” Hope said.
She worked for a company doing high-tech business development so she was still making sales calls, albeit not door-to door. Hope enjoyed the work, and when she learned her company was going to open an office in California, she and some coworkers-turned-friends decided to move out there to help get the business going.
So after a year in Washington D.C., she found herself on the move again and she landed in Silicon Valley.
After four years in California, Hope had the opportunity to cross the pond and move to London.
“I had been traveling for work with a company that had global operations, and I was interested in moving to London and exploring outside of the U.S.,” she said.
Thinking back on the moves she’d made, Hope sees that she was trying to escape from something that was hard for her to deal with. And that something was becoming pregnant while in college and placing her child for adoption.
“At the time it was the best choice with the information I had,” she said. “I wasn’t ready to be a mom. I wasn’t encouraged to parent, but was pushed toward adoption.”
She was fortunate enough to match with someone and actually ended up living with her son’s adoptive mother for the last few months of her pregnancy. They did prenatal yoga together, went on daily walks, and really were able to get to know each other.
“She (the adoptive mother) was very insistent on having an open
adoption. She wanted her child to know where he came from and have access if he wanted access,” Hope said.
Sometime after the birth and leaving college, Hope started moving around the globe for work. Her time in California was intentional, as that’s where her son was living and Hope had a desire to be nearer to him. However, she found that when even though she was closer in proximity to him, it didn’t change the visitation schedule. It was tough to be so close yet so far away.
“I’d still only get to see him two or three times a year, and that didn’t change even though I was only a drive away,” she said. “Imagine existing in the same world as your child but feeling planets away, not hours. You have limited access. You’re missing every small and big moment because of a choice you made. That’s a tough pill to swallow!”
That frustration and disappointment fueled a desire to leave California, though she sees now that moving to London probably wasn’t the wisest move for her.
“But I had to get out of California. It was really hard to be so close yet so far away at the same time. It was almost impossible, and it led to some unhealthy coping mechanisms to get through all of that,” Hope said. “I spent years struggling with self-hate, grief and regrets. I lived in that spiral for years and out of that spiral came the symptoms of not dealing with that stuff, which led to addiction.”
In 2020, after two years in London, and at the age of 28, Hope moved back to Minnesota thinking it would be a tide-over spot.

“I thought I would come home to mom and dad and figure out what was next. Maybe I would go to New York City or back to California, but lo and behold, I ended up buying a place a mile and a half from my mom’s house,” Hope said. “If you would have told me three months before I moved back that this would be my life today, I would say you’re crazy.”
Hope and her husband Jesse opened Pool and Spa Experts in June 2024. Jesse is the expert on service and all things pools and spas, and Hope handles the bookwork and marketing. They have only one rule (or rather Jesse’s request!), and that’s no business talk before they’ve had their morning cups of coffee. I am also the board and vice chair for On Your Feet Foundation which is a non-profit that provides comprehensive post-placement care and support to birthparents.
Hobbies
Home projects with Jesse, listening to books on Audible, doing crafts and ice cream runs with the kids, and anything with the dogs.
Household
Hope lives in a full house with two adults, three kids, two dogs, three cats and two fish.
She never thought she would find herself back in Minnesota but was happy to discover how simple life could be. However, that’s not to say she didn’t put in a lot of work to get to that point.
Starting in London, she took steps toward healing. One of the steps was writing a book, “Finding Hope,” which details her journey of being a birth mother, and the feelings that followed.
“I think that was one of the first steps in saying, ‘I’m not ashamed of my story. I’m not ashamed of being a birth mother,’” she said.
When she first got her own place in Mankato, Hope recalls spending about six months on the couch with her dog, crying, grieving the breakup of a relationship she had in London, and so much more.
“I let myself feel feelings,” she said.
The time alone was good for her. She began consistent therapy and started working out and taking better care of herself.
“I do believe that moving back to Mankato, of all places, was the best decision I ever made. The best decision I ever made because it’s where I got my fresh start,” Hope said. “I started making friends and spending time with my family and making meaningful connections.”
One of those connections was with her now-husband, Jesse, who delivered a hot tub to Hope’s house within the first year of her living in Mankato.
“We instantly had a connection, and while neither of us were ready for anything serious, that’s sometimes when life hits you in the face with other plans. We quickly realized it was more than that,” she said.
While she was already making strides toward healing and being healthy, Hope was curious as she said Jesse, a non-drinker, was always so fun to be around. That, and attending the funeral of a friend in California had an altering moment on her life.
“I cried the entire plane ride home, and when we landed I looked at Jesse and said, “I’m never going to drink. I’m never going to alter my brain or body in a way that I don’t have control of myself.’ And I haven’t had a drink since,” Hope said.
In January 2025 Hope marked three years of sobriety and said it’s been huge for her life and her fresh start journey.
Another thing that’s made a tremendous improvement on her life was a significant weight loss. Hope had struggled with weight since she can remember. She’s tried diets, calorie counting, working out, and just about anything put in front of her.
“When I moved back to Minnesota, I lost the first 70 pounds working out at JP Fitness, drinking Herbalife Shakes, walking the dog, Peloton, therapy, essentially a combination of healthy choices,” Hope said.
However she could not get below the 240 pound mark. So she added a GLP 1 medication that has been successful for her. That, coupled with regularly workouts, has resulted in her losing over 160 pounds. She also credits a variety of Mankato health and beauty businesses that were pivotal parts of her weight loss journey.
“There’s an emotional tie to the weight. I look in the mirror and I think, ‘who is this woman?’ But also, ‘there she is.’ I had been hiding behind armor, whether it was alcohol or weight for so many years. Now I can just be myself for maybe the first time my entire life, and it’s an incredible feeling,” she said.
Hope has put in the work and she’s certainly in a better place, but acknowledged that she still struggles.
“My life isn’t perfect,” she said. “I’m learning every day. I have discovered who I am and what I truly like. I used to love being the life of the party, and now my perfect Saturday is staying at home with my husband doing projects and hanging out with our family! And I’ve stopped apologizing for my change in desires, goals and wants!”
She once had goals of traveling and being a CEO, but has found a purpose in deeper ways.
“My purpose now has become being a great partner to my husband and a role model for my three step kids. Being present, being a constant. That’s what I want to be,” Hope said.
Hope is the global director of strategic partnerships at Globalization Partners. She works remotely and travels about once a month.
She sees her son, now 11 years old, two to three times a year and they talk weekly over the phone or by FaceTime. This past summer, he and his mother came to stay with Hope and her family.
“That was just a wonderful experience. The kids just merged, and it was such a natural connection,” she said. “Adoption is really hard. It’s painful, but it can also be very beautiful. From trauma and from pain we’ve created something very beautiful.”
For anyone looking to start over, Hope encourages they work on forgiving themselves and asking for help, whether it be from a therapist, friend or clergy.
“There’s no one in this world who hasn’t gone through a hard time. None of us are immune from that,” she said.
Today Hope will tell you that she tries not to regret running away from her problems, but that she’s grateful for her different life experiences, because they’ve all led her to where she’s supposed to be. RVW

When at first our hearing begins to fade; Though the signs are foretelling, we may choose to evade. We tell others they don’t speak clearly, they mumble a lot; My concentration is elsewhere, that’s why I ask what. Please talk a bit louder; your voice is so weak; I could hear you OK, if you would look at me as you speak. I can hear you just fine, when you’re close at hand. If you would learn to enunciate, I could understand. Being with family is one of life’s greatest joys; But, don’t expect me to hear with all of that noise. It’s easy to blame others, though it’s not really fair; It’s your hearing problem, solve it, show others you care. He who said ‘Silence is Golden’ spoke for himself only; For the hearing impaired, “Silence is Lonely”.

elly Simmons has been the walking example of a woman who can make anything work… but in the end, is it how she wants to spend her days? From being a college student thrust into motherhood, she has been able to navigate change based on the needs of those around her, because at her core, she has always had a passion for the wellbeing of others. But what about herself and her true calling?
In college, Kelly set out to pursue a PhD and establish her own private practice in counseling psychology. She wanted to help people in ways they couldn’t help themselves. During her master’s program, licensure requirements changed, keeping her further and further from that dream. Toss in the birth of her daughter, and she knew she needed to find an alternative plan for her growing family.
Kelly completed her degree, but the hiring market just wasn’t conducive to supporting a family. With starting salaries of $26,000 and thousands of unpaid licensure hours to complete, she began to search for careers outside of counseling.
Soon, she was able to find a landing spot in home care; it was a higher paying opportunity and adjacent to a counseling passion. Her tenacity and ability related counseling ideologies within the practice quickly catapulted her from running the private-pay home care office in Mankato. Her ability to connect with others set her up for a very successful 12-year tenancy in the sales division. She had significant financial success and stability, but something was still missing.
“My kids are grown and more independent, so I knew it was time to make a change if I ever could. I value
freedom and no one is going to create that for me,” said KeIly. “I wanted out of the hustle and to be able to start living out my values.”
An encounter with Mending Roots owner, Nash Surdy, changed everything. Surdy and his wife have a sideline business fixing and reselling furniture. Kelly, who purchased items from him online, saw a therapist opportunity with the therapy clinic and reached out to Surdy about it. After officially applying, she was accepted as a therapist at Mending Roots.
“It was the first opening I applied for and I was hired,” said Kelly. “It was meant to be.”
At the age of 48, Kelly took a leap of faith and started back at square one. Knowing full well the financial hit she (and her family) was about to take, she used the opportunity to cover the 4,000 supervision hours required for licensure and allowed her to build a therapy caseload.
Jumping back into counseling created some unique challenges for Kelly. She faced low starting salaries and high loan debt while continuing to support her son’s college tuition. An ever-changing industry, she is having to learn new theories, diagnoses, and also encountered age discrimination along the way.
“No one likes to admit it happens, but it does,” said Kelly. “I’m 48 and not fresh out of school anymore, so I’m the new kid who has a lot to learn. My dream is to work in telehealth, and I’ve had several interviews with a young, hip company. I’m clearly not their typical 20–22-yearold demographic.”
Battling imposter syndrome and fears about meeting her licensure requirements, Kelly immersed herself into learning and full-time work. She started with just two clients, transitioning to play therapy for children on the autism spectrum required acquiring new skills and knowledge. Showing up every day to work, learn and study up for her licensure exam.
“I have memories of my grandmother sitting my brother and me down to just talk about our lives and what our dreams are. I’ve always known what I wanted, and I don’t easily let things go or slip by, while my brother takes a bit longer to make any life decision,” she said. “At one point, my grandmother interrupted him and just simply said, “Just do something already!” That stuck with me. You only get one life and if I really want something, the only one who can get me there is me.”
Looking back over her career path, building a family and a solid financial foundation, and then throwing it to the wind for her passion, Kelly continues to be an advocate for change.
“It’s cliché, but it never is too late to make a change. I’d encourage other women to consider their short-term sacrifices for their long-term gains,” Kelly said. “Don’t let fears hinder your personal and professional growth. While I hope to make real money again someday, my days go faster and I’m making connections with people and am excited to share in their experiences.”
While Kelly is excited about her new career opportunity, she doesn’t regret the path she took to get there. Her face lit up when talking about her former jobs, helping to grow a company, add programming for client services, and sharing a lot of wins with her team. When asked what advice she’d give her younger self, she shook the question off.
It’s cliché, but it never is too late to make a change. I’d encourage other women to consider their short-term sacrifices for their long-term gains.
“I wouldn’t do anything differently. I love my daughter and my previous career got me a lot of wins. I have no regrets,” she said. “I only wish the new pathway forward was easier. Not just for me, but anyone pursuing a counseling or therapy practice.”
Her recommendation for anyone thinking about a change in career later in life would be to develop a personal mission statement.
“Every day when you are feeling like you are losing sight of your goals – look at the mission statement you wrote. Are you making progress? Is what you’re doing today aligning with where you want to be?” said Kelly.
Kelly’s years spent working for in-home healthcare companies and gerontology, she saw so many people living for retirement. She knew that she didn’t want to wait for the good years.
“So many of us dream of the days when we can travel or spend more time with our friends and families—why not now? She said. “My goal is to help people through telehealth and have the freedom to work anywhere before retirement. I want to live now.” RVW

Embers of a fire appear to be the remnant of something that once was. Yet, the life spark remaining within them is a testament to the resilience of energy and nature.
By KELSEY COOLING
Hello! My name is Kelsey and my journey is one of transformation, resilience, and deep gratitude.
Originally from Colorado, I now call Madelia, Minnesota home, where I live with my husband and our two children. Moving to Madelia was a pivotal moment in my life. At the time, I had an associate’s degree and was a stay-at-home mom. That move sparked a journey of growth and reinvention. Since settling here, I’ve earned my bachelor’s degree, joined the National Guard, found my passion as a real estate agent with True Real Estate, and built a thriving Airbnb business. Most recently, I’ve embarked on my greatest adventure yet—opening Embars Cocktail Bar and Lounge, which has now been open for nine months.
Real estate has been my career focus for the past four years, and it’s something I deeply love, and will continue to do. However, opening Embars marked a significant turning point in my life. After losing both of my parents in 2023, I felt it was important to use the blessings they left to help build our family’s future. My husband and I used those funds to start this business—despite neither of us having a background in bartending or small business ownership. Still, we
created a space where our community can gather—whether to celebrate, connect, or simply unwind. Embars is quickly becoming a beloved spot in a blossoming town, and it ties my family roots to the life we’re building here, keeping my parents’ spirit alive as we move forward.
We wanted to give this building a name that would honor its legacy, hence Embars. In 2016, a fire destroyed seven buildings on this side of downtown. Most of the structures east of Embars had to be rebuilt. Rather than accept defeat, the town took the opportunity to emerge stronger and more prosperous than ever before—coining the term “Madelia Strong.” Embers of a fire appear to be the remnant of something that once was. Yet, the life spark remaining within them is a testament to the resilience of energy and nature. Energy doesn’t die; it merely transforms. That same spirit of transformation is what fuels us every day at Embars—building something new while honoring the past.
While I juggle many roles, our ongoing joke is that I am “Big-delia’s biggest fan.” I truly love this town and never would have guessed that this tiny Midwest community would become my forever home. I’m
Throughout my journey, I have been incredibly fortunate to have the support of a strong community, particularly an amazing tribe of women who inspire and uplift me.
proud to say that I serve as Madelia’s Chamber President this year, and I am excited to help foster deeper connections and promote community growth.
Throughout my journey, I have been incredibly fortunate to have the support of a strong community, particularly an amazing tribe of women who inspire and uplift me. Their encouragement has helped me overcome challenges and strive for new heights. I’m passionate about paying that support forward by inspiring other women to pursue their goals, no matter where they are in their journey. I am also very thankful for the support and encouragement of my husband and partner Nic. RVW
In 2016 downtown Madelia experienced a devastating fire that destroyed a good section of its businesses. Nearly 10 years later the business community is stronger than ever. In this FRESH START issue of River Valley Woman we showcase the strength and determination of Madelia’s people, and want to share with our readers why this small, but mighty, city should be on everyone’s “Go Be Do Connect” list. The positive attitude resonates throughout the town’s business owners as is evident in their comments!
Madelia is more than a town—it’s a testament to resilience, strength, and the power of community. When a fire devastated downtown in 2016, we didn’t just rebuild—we lifted each other up, proving that businesses here aren’t just businesses, they’re families. Madelia Health and the Madelia Health Foundation embody that same spirit, ensuring care, opportunity, and support for all. In Madelia, success isn’t a solo journey—we rise together.”

Communities often find an unparalleled strength that binds them together. Whether through acts of kindness, shared moments of grief, or the collective effort to rebuild, the resilience of the human spirit shines the brightest during such times. It is in these moments of unity that the true essence of humanity reveals itself, turning sorrow into hope and loss into a newfound purpose.”
— Sweet Indeed
Finding hope, healing, and resilience after the devastation of losing everything was so hard, but also a blessing in disguise. It has been a very long, emotional journey to be able to say those words! When you are put in situations like the 2016 fire, you must find the silver linings, and it was a fresh start for us to rebuild our dreams in a way we never could have imagined. Thanks to the great support of the community, we were able to rebuild bigger and stronger, and were able to grow within our community to provide more for our guests. Madelia is such a unique community that has SO much to offer, and we are so grateful to be a part of it!

Linden Sky Boutique opened in May of 2023 in Madelia. As a lifelong Madelia resident, there isn’t anywhere else I would want to have our business. We have a community that cares deeply about its success and our businesses support each other. Our business friends and neighbors are always genuinely excited for one another and their successes. We know that when one of us succeeds, our town thrives. And our town is thriving! With places to shop, play, have a meal or relax with a beverage, you can spend an entire day here with something for everyone! It is truly a special place.”
— Linden Sky Boutique
In 2016, Madelia faced unimaginable loss, but from the ashes came strength, resilience, and renewal. Pioneer Bank was honored to stand beside the Madelia community then—and we continue to stand beside them now. Whether you’re starting a business, buying a home, or planning for a new financial future, we’re here to help you take the next step. Because every fresh start deserves a strong foundation.”

KIRBY HURD Grants & Communications Manager CADA, Mankato
Let’s talk about relationship conflict.
CADA advocates work with people experiencing relationship conflict every day; advocates are adept at helping individuals to learn about healthy and unhealthy relationships, and to identify signs of each to apply to their own lives. The familiarity and proximity of relationship conflict in our work can make it hard to remember that conflict is a natural part of all relationships – disagreements happen in even the strongest, healthiest relationships, and not all relationship conflict is negative or dangerous. Conflict can even be a constructive tool to address challenges in relationships, and a mechanism for growth in relationships through deeper and more meaningful connection.
For conflict to be productive and healthy, it needs to be approached with care and intention. Here are four key strategies to utilize in helping to ensure healthy conflict in your relationships.
Active listening is the process of listening to another person’s perspective instead of simply waiting for your turn to speak. It involves acknowledging their point of view and validating their thoughts and feelings – even if or when you disagree, or don’t share the same understanding.
To be an effective active listener, allow plenty of time for the person to share, ask clarifying questions to gather additional information, and summarize what you’ve been told by using the speaker’s language back to them. This can help to establish mutual understanding and avoid miscommunication that can cause or worsen conflict.
Active listening also involves nonverbal communication, which shows that you are engaged and invested in the conversation. Maintaining eye contact and an open body posture and nodding affirmatively are effective nonverbal communication cues that demonstrate you are listening actively.
Use “I” Statements
Healthy conflict involves addressing a problem – not attacking a person. Humans are built for connection and we generally want to please others, so it’s natural to feel uneasy and defensive when conflict arises, especially among those in a close, meaningful, or important relationship.
To avoid making someone feel attacked, try approaching the conflict by starting your statement with “I” instead of “you” and be sure to follow the “I” statement with the feeling or consequence the conflict causes. For example, saying “I feel that you don’t prioritize our time together, and that makes me feel unimportant” instead of “You never make time for us.”
Using “I” statements are a powerful way to minimize defensiveness and to create empathy by learning how our actions impact others and their feelings. Sharing these thoughts and feelings openly helps conflict to become an opportunity for deeper connection and mutual respect.
Regulate Your Emotions
Knowing that conflict will occur in our relationships allows us to plan for its effective and peaceful resolution. We are most likely to get into conflict with people close to us; in the process of building relationships, we learn about others’ needs, limitations, and vulnerabilities.
If you know that conflict makes you or the other person feel emotional, allow plenty of time for sharing, and plan to take breaks when things become too heated or intense. Consider your setting or surroundings and the context when addressing conflict; avoid sensitive or especially challenging topics at inopportune times. Similarly, be aware of your body language and nonverbal cues, and the tone of your voice – a calm demeanor, open posture, and soft eye contact can make conflict feel more approachable and comfortable.
When approached with mindfulness and care, it’s possible to use conflict as a tool for growth and deeper connection. Instead of avoiding conflict, find ways to embrace conflict as an opportunity to learn more about yourself and those with whom you are in relationship. It can be a meaningful way to understand the perspective and values of another person, and to move your relationship forward with compassion.
Conflict and disagreements are a normal part of all relationships and can be a mechanism for positive change. If you can approach a relationship knowing that conflict will occur at some point, you can plan for how to make it effective and to resolve it in a way that respects everyone by using the strategies of active listening, using “I” statements, regulating emotions, and utilizing conflict as a tool for growth and connection.
Social media often gets a bad reputation. We hear about the downsides — doomscrolling, comparison traps, algorithm frustrations — but what about the good? The truth is, when used intentionally, social media can be one of the most powerful tools for connection, community, and impact.
Whether you’re an entrepreneur, creative, or small business owner, social media isn’t just about marketing… it’s about building relationships. The strongest brands today aren’t the ones shouting into the void; they’re the ones fostering real conversations and creating spaces where people feel seen, heard, and valued.
So, how do you build a meaningful online community — one that goes beyond likes and follows?
1. Start with Connection, Not Perfection
People don’t connect with polished perfection; they connect with relatability. Whether you’re sharing your expertise, behind-the-scenes moments, or personal stories, let your audience see the real you. Your authenticity is what turns passive followers into an engaged community.
2. Focus on Conversations, Not Just Content
Social media isn’t a one-way street. If you’re just posting and walking away, you’re missing the magic. Respond to comments, engage with others’ content, ask questions, and make your audience feel like they’re part of something. Community isn’t built by broadcasting — it’s built through dialogue.
3. Give More Than You Take
Think of social media like a friendship. If someone only reaches out when they need something, it doesn’t feel great, right? The same goes for online communities. Share value, celebrate others, and engage without expecting anything in return. When you lead with generosity, trust and loyalty follow.
4. Set Boundaries to Make It Sustainable
Burnout is real, especially when social media feels like a never-ending to-do list. The key to longevity? Creating a system that works for you. Whether that means posting less frequently, batching content, or taking social media breaks, find a rhythm that feels good instead of overwhelming.
5. Show Up Consistently (But On Your Terms)
Consistency doesn’t mean constant posting — it means showing up in a way that feels sustainable and aligned with your goals. Maybe that’s daily Instagram stories, a weekly newsletter, or monthly long-form posts. The key is to be present in a way that builds trust with your audience over time.
Social Media Isn’t Just a Tool — It’s a Space for Community
At its core, social media isn’t about algorithms or trends — it’s about people. Some of my most meaningful relationships, including my best friend, started online. We met in a masterclass, connected over shared experiences, and built a friendship that has lasted beyond the screen. That’s the power of social media when used intentionally.
The brands and businesses that thrive online are the ones that prioritize connection over perfection, engagement over vanity metrics, and sustainability over hustle.
So, if you’re feeling overwhelmed by social media, take a deep breath. You don’t need to do more — you just need to show up with intention. Your people are out there, waiting to connect with you.
Are you ready to build a community that actually feels like home? Start small, stay consistent, and above all, be yourself. That’s where the REAL magic happens.

on Lake Sisseton in Fairmont, is a mid-century modern makeover and a personal project for Deb Williamson and her family. Deb designed the interiors along with the aesthetic changes to the exterior, deck, patios, and landscaping.
“Our goal was to create an upscale rental in Martin County that is fully furnished, decorated, and
available for short- and long-term rental opportunities,” said Williamson, designer and owner of Inspiring Interiors LLC.
The home was built in 1962 and still maintained its original fixtures throughout. It had never changed hands from the original owners until it was sold in 2020. That’s when Williamson saw an opportunity to add the perfect next project to her portfolio.
The entire interior layout of the home was reconfigured from four small bedrooms on the main floor to two main-floor bedrooms and three lower-level bedrooms. The main floor was designed to include an open-concept living room, kitchen, and dining room, along with the master suite and a guest bed and bath. The master suite features a spacious bedroom with floor-to-ceiling windows and picturesque views of Lake Sisseton, an attached bathroom with a Cambria shower, and a walk-in closet with custom storage solutions.
The color scheme consists of an earthy palette, including warm browns, dark charcoal grays, greens, orange tones, and creamy whites that transition seamlessly from the exterior to the interior.
“I love when the exterior sets the tone for the interior,” said Williamson. “I think we did a great job creating a cohesive design and seamless evolution from the outdoors to the indoors.”
On the exterior, Deb selected black Andersen Architect Series windows, painted LP SmartSiding combined with board and batten accents, cement board in cedar, and Bayer Built’s latest fiberglass exterior front door. A modern black garage door, black metal accents, charcoal gray painted brick, and a TimberTech composite deck complete the look.
the home, including on countertops, windowsills, and showers. Hand-selected tiles and wood planks finish off the floors. The original brick fireplace that spans two floors was the only original interior feature to remain and was updated with dark charcoal gray paint.
Recently, Inspiring Interiors added a custom furniture line to its offerings, complementing its existing custom window treatments and artwork to create the precise look clients desire. Deb carefully selected furniture, window treatments, floor coverings, artwork, and accessories for the Kings Road project. Layering a mix of materials, fabrics, and styles—such as pillows, throws, greenery, and décor—brings depth and warmth to the interior, balancing the space beautifully.

Wouldn’t you agree we all want to feel seen, heard and valued? Have you ever wanted to speak up in a work meeting but feared being misunderstood or labeled? How many of us have been in a heated argument at home or work, and realize no one is really listening, and there’s just a lot of shouting happening? Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could say what we wanted to say, without fear of being judged or criticized? Harville Hendrix, Ph.D. who has been featured on Oprah 17 times stated, “Talking is the most dangerous thing people can do and listening the most infrequent.”
So, what exactly is Safe Conversations? Safe Conversations is a dialogue process in which respectful speaking and listening replaces all forms of negativity—shaming, blaming, criticizing or put downs—with mutual respect and cohesiveness. It is a relational technology which uses structured dialogue to create a safe space between two people.
Drs. Harville Hendrix and his wife, Helen LaKelly Hunt, re-introduced this educational program by teaching the skills of mirroring, validating, and empathizing, which are heavily ingrained within the clinical setting and now brought forth to the mainstream of coaching and counseling. Companies who invest in this concept lay a good foundation that boosts collaboration, morale, and therefore the bottom line. It improves workplace culture by improving communication where we can talk without criticism, listen without judgment, and connect beyond difference. Educating people on why they react the way they do, and how to change our behavior while respecting one another is a terrific way to improve our work culture. And the good news is, it can be carried into our personal lives as well. Plus, we can do all of this without necessarily agreeing with one another.
Polarization is objection to difference. This step-by-step approach to talking, and more importantly, to listening, leads the way to connection and understanding. This not only improves your bottom line, but the happiness factor of your employees, if you are in a management position, and the process is just as effective with improving marriages, dating, friends, and family life!
So, how do we even begin this? The first step is taking a pledge of positivity. This entails a conscious decision to avoid anything that can be perceived as a put down by another person. We do this by
avoiding put downs (shame, blame, and criticism) avoid any words, body language such as rolling your eyes, or any other action that would be considered a put down by another person. Then replace with affirmations or positivity. This is to replace the negative energy in the space between each other with positive energy. We then learn to reframe your frustration, challenge or concern and express it instead as a wish, request, or solution. Then we also learn how to repair or restore connection. When negativity occurs, repair the situation promptly with your choice of remedies that will quickly restore your conversation and your connection. Safe Conversation teaches a structured dialogue.
For most of human history, mankind communicated to each other using monologue. Monologue is rooted in the hierarchical structure of kings, lords and dictators who rule over the people. The basic message of monologue is: “I am right, and you need to see things my way, or you are wrong.” It is hard to connect during monologue since the structure of it creates inequality and anxiety. The other person usually checks out and simply pretends to listen, or you end up with two people talking at each other and no one is truly listening. Dialogue is a new way of communicating where two people take turns talking and listening. Dialogue moves us from simply hearing each other to a space where genuine listening occurs. The structure of dialogue creates balance, equality, and physiological safety. Structured dialogue moves you from your lower brain of fight or flight, to your upper brain where understanding and compassion live. When you are operating from your upper brain, you are able to think critically, logically, come up with creative solutions, and empathize and connect with others.
There are 8 billion people in the world, and the goal is to change how we interact with one another. This concept has most recently been introduced to Pope Francis in May of 2024 by Drs Harville Hendrix and Helen LaKelly Hunt, and it is also being introduced to the United Nations. The goal is by 2050 that a quarter of the population will be trained in the Safe Conversations concept. What a wonderful world this could be!

vomit after eating grass, it is unlikely that they turn to the salad as a form of self-medication. In fact, only 10% of dogs show signs of illness prior to eating grass. The bottom line is that the majority of grass-eating dogs are not sick beforehand and do not vomit afterwards. Other theories are anxiety, needing enrichment, a natural need, and just simply…they like it. Since none of them are ’fessing up, the jury is out on this one.
Stray cats pooping in garden soil
You may have heard of toxoplasmosis (a parasitic infection) that cats can pass through their feces. This is something that scares human doctors and pregnant women, and why you are urged to “let” your husband clean the box during the 9 months (maybe forever after?) of your pregnancy. Since this parasite comes from cats eating infected meat (birds and rodents) and then passed through the feces, you are much more likely to get it from the lurking strange turds in your garden. These hooligans are living off questionable food sources compared to our pampered indoor cats. For safety, and for the benefit of the bird population, it’s best to keep your cats inside.
Did you know that gardening could be toxic and potentially life threatening! We are not talking about the veggies coming for you with a machete. All jokes aside, there are some things to keep in mind when getting excited about being out in the garden when you have pets.
Wood Chips
Coco mulch is best known for its classy look and great smell but it also attracts the nose of our dogs. Of course eating any woodchips can cause dental splinters, mouth sores and even obstructions but because these chips are made with the coco bean they can cause much more serious stomach upset, changes in heart rate and even rhythm, hyperactivity, seizures. Rocks for some reason can also be a delicacy for a young puppy but a costly one at that!
Fertilizer
Most are really fine after they are dry. Read the label carefully as some do not dry for hours or even days. Ingestion of can cause stomach upset, tremors, neurological signs and weakness.
Bulbs
Such as daffodils, tulips, hyacinth, crocus can cause some more serious issues when ingested. In spring may cause mild nausea and vomiting, but autumn crocus can cause severe vomiting, diarrhea, serious changes in heart rate and rhythm, bone marrow suppression and multi-organ failure. Not your pet’s “brightest moment.”
The more organic options are much safer, but again, this is where reading the label is super important. Exposure to concentrated or undiluted products can cause seizures, low blood pressure and breathing problems. Slug and snail bait contains metaldehyde, with iron phosphate, fly bait containing methomyl, systemic insecticides containing disyston or disulfoton, mole or gopher bait containing zinc phosphide, and most forms of rat poisons (especially those containing bromethalin) can cause very severe kidney damage.
There is no hard evidence to support why pets do this. Does the pet eat the grass to soothe a stomach ache or vomit because it ate the grass? Since studies show that less than 25% of dogs
Plants that affect the cardiovascular system include Rhododendron, Azalea, Rosebay, Great Laurel, Mountain Laurel, Hellebore, Lenten Rose and Lily of the Valley. If ingested they can cause salivation and vomiting within 30 minutes followed by increased heart rate, weakness, tremors and disorientation. Plants that affect the central nervous system include Yesterday Today and Tomorrow, Kiss-me-quick, Lady of the Night and Morning-Noon-Night. These plants often cause vomiting/diarrhea, tremors and seizures. Plants that target the kidneys include Easter Lily, Asitatic Lily, Stargazer Lily, Tiger Lily, Casablanca Lily and Day Lily. These plants can be deadly to cats but the initial signs are vomiting and lethargy. Unlike others, even rubbing against these plants can be toxic as the pollen falls on the coat and the cat cleans their coat. You can’t have lilies and cats in the same house.
Birdseed
Other than not wanting our pets to snack on the expensive appetizers meant for our feathered friends, many seed blends contain raisins which can cause severe kidney damage in dogs. Suet is also super fatty and can lead to pancreatitis.
Fleas & Ticks
These nasty little buggers are looking for any furry thing to hitch a ride on. The nice thing about these is there are monthly preventatives that can keep these guys at bay!
Thorns
It’s all fun and games in the garden until someone loses an eye! Or even a puncture to a paw can be quite ouchy.
Standing bodies of water
Since other critters, in addition to our pets, are also attracted to gardens and may urinate where they forage, Leptospirosis is a concern. Wild animals such as mice, raccoons, deer, and so on can carry this disease. Lepto is excreted through urine and your pet then licks up the water and ingests this disease. The scary thing is, not only can it be deadly to your pet, it is also zoonotic meaning, you can receive the gift from your pet if you were to ingest the infected urine. No, you don’t have to drink it, you just have to be a poor hand washer!
Gardening does not have to be scary though. Fencing off the garden can be super helpful and prevent most of the above concerns. You can provide a “garden” somewhere else that has all the fun stuff. Organic dirt for your dog to dig in with maybe some fun toys hidden in it. Plant some cat grass for your cat to munch on. Petscaping can be fun and “Pinterest”“worthy!

As the days grow longer and the weather warms up, spring is the perfect time to refresh your diet and embrace healthier eating habits. Just as you might spring clean your home, giving your diet a seasonal makeover can rejuvenate your body and mind. Here are five practical tips to help you spring clean your diet and enjoy the vibrant flavors of the season.
Spring brings a bounty of fresh fruits and vegetables that are not only delicious but also packed with nutrients. Incorporating seasonal produce into your meals can enhance your diet with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Look for asparagus, peas, radishes, strawberries, and leafy greens like spinach and arugula. These foods are at their peak in spring, offering the best flavor and nutritional value.
As the weather warms up, our bodies naturally crave lighter, more refreshing meals. Take advantage of this by incorporating more salads, smoothies, and light soups into your diet. These meals are not only easy to prepare but also help you stay hydrated and energized.
Staying hydrated is essential for overall health, and spring is a great time to up your water intake. Instead of reaching for sugary drinks, try infusing your water with fresh fruits, herbs, and vegetables. This not only adds a burst of flavor but also encourages you to drink more water throughout the day. Some popular combinations include cucumber and mint, lemon and ginger, or strawberry and basil.

Spring is a time of renewal, making it the perfect opportunity to adopt mindful eating habits. Mindful eating involves paying full attention to the experience of eating and savoring each bite. This practice can help you develop a healthier relationship with food, reduce overeating, and improve digestion. Start by eliminating distractions during meals, such as turning off the TV or putting away your phone. Take the time to appreciate the colors, textures, and flavors of your food, and listen to your body’s hunger and fullness cues.
One of the best ways to ensure you stick to healthy eating habits is to plan and prep your meals in advance. Take some time each week to plan your meals, create a shopping list, and prep ingredients. This can save you time and reduce the temptation to reach for unhealthy convenience foods. Focus on incorporating a variety of seasonal produce, lean proteins, and whole grains into your meal plan.

For many, spring means opening windows, sweeping the dust out and rotating wardrobes. While you’re freshening up your home, consider ways to also tidy up your finances. You may be surprised at what’s hiding in your accounts, inboxes, financial documents and tax returns.
As a Treasury Management Officer much of my day is spent assisting people with their savings, checking, CD (certificate of deposit) and various other account support needs. In doing so I’ve learned about some incredible stories that have inspired me—in the spirit of spring cleaning—to share a few with you. Perhaps they will provide the motivation you need to consider a little financial spruce up yourself.
Double check your signers
It was over a warm cup of coffee that a friend of mine recently shared the experience of calling her primary bank with the need to move money from savings to checking. However, upon trying to do so she was told by the banker that she didn’t have permission to do so as her name wasn’t on the account. After 20+ years of marriage and sharing, what she believed to be a joint checking and joint savings account, she came to learn that, somewhere along the way, her name was taken off the savings account. What happened?... that still remains a mystery, but the spring cleaning tip takeaway is to always double check your signers on your accounts. Which leads to financial refresh tip #2.
Set up POD on all your accounts
When is the last time you looked at your accounts and made sure your indications of where you want your dollars to go should something happen to you. Setting up a Payable-on-Death (POD) designation is also super important as it allows your beneficiaries to access the funds directly without going through the lengthy and often costly probate process. Best of all its typically free and its simple. You can even name multiple beneficiaries as specify how the funds should be divided among them. And speaking of free…
Meet with your banker
When was the last time you took a few moments out of your day to sit down with your personal banker? It’s such a simple thing to do that costs you nothing! Why not tap the knowledge your banking team can offer? Here are just a few things your Treasury Management Officer can assist with to help you tidy up your financial house.
Your banker can help to consolidate your financial accounts to get a clearer picture of your overall wealth. Or if you prefer to keep multiple accounts, they can help you leverage digital tools to view them all in one place.
Go Paperless
Switch to digital statements to reduce physical clutter and make it easier to track your finances. You might save money in the process too as many financial institutions now charge to mail you a paper statement.
Bankers are typically very good at helping to identify which documents to keep and which to shred. Most banks even offer complimentary shredding services. And for the paperwork you do keep, digitize important records and create a logical filing system for easy access and less clutter!
Just like clearing out a messy closet, cleaning your accounts can make life easier. A little effort now to clean up the financial clutter can save you stress and money later. And don’t be afraid to leverage your Treasury Management Officer to provide guidance on consolidating accounts, automating payments, or setting financial goals. We all deserve personalized financial support that can help to offer a brighter financial future for our hard earned dollars!

Many of us experience moments where the path to personal and professional fulfillment takes an unexpected turn. Sometimes, these turns arise from challenges, or significant life events, prompting a search for balance and a deeper understanding of ourselves. For me, that turn came in the form of burnout. My experience in educational leadership, while rewarding, ultimately led me to a crossroads. The passion I once felt had dwindled, replaced by exhaustion, anxiety, frustration, and a sense of depletion. I was running on fumes, missing out on the things and people I cared about the most.
This wasn’t sustainable. I knew I needed a change, a shift that would allow me to reclaim my life and rediscover my joy. Leaving this position was a leap of faith, a step into the unknown. I didn’t have a concrete plan for what was going to come next, just a deeper knowing that I couldn’t continue down the path I was on, a knowing that I didn’t have to live this way, and a desire for no one else to experience this reality. This realization became the catalyst for a journey of selfdiscovery and healing, a journey that ultimately led me to unlock the incredible potential of coaching, not just for myself, but for others. It was terrifying and exhilarating at the same time, but looking back, I wouldn’t change a thing.
So, what is coaching, exactly? It’s a collaborative partnership designed to empower you to achieve your full potential. Your coach will act as a guide, a facilitator, and a dedicated partner in your journey. Together, we’ll navigate challenges, clarify your goals, and create a personalized roadmap to a more fulfilling life. It’s important to note that coaching is not therapy. While both involve deep listening, coaching focuses on your present and future, empowering you to take actionable steps toward sustainable change. Coaches won’t delve into past traumas; instead, they concentrate on building the life you want, right now. In a coaching session, various dimensions of your life are explored, working towards:
• Elevating Your Self-Awareness: Self-awareness is the bedrock of lasting change. Through insightful questions, active listening, and guided exploration, we’ll uncover your core values, beliefs, strengths, and weaknesses. Coaches help examine the stories you tell yourself and identify any limiting beliefs that are holding you back. This self-knowledge is crucial. It forms the foundation
for making conscious choices aligned with your authentic self, and the vision for your life, allowing you to recognize patterns, understand your motivations, and create new, empowering narratives. Together, we’ll discover the “why” behind your actions, paving the way for a more intentional and purposeful life.
• Building Your Resilience: Life inevitably throws us curveballs. It’s not a matter of if challenges will arise, but when. Coaching empowers you to reclaim your power and choose how you respond. Together, we’ll build your resilience toolkit, equipping you with practical tools and strategies to navigate stress and adversity with grace and ease. We’ll strengthen your mental fortitude, develop emotional regulation skills, and cultivate a growth mindset. You’ll learn to see setbacks not as failures, but as invaluable opportunities for growth, allowing you to face whatever comes your way with confidence and strength.
• Learning to Thrive: Coaching is ultimately about designing a life you truly love. This goes beyond simply setting goals. It’s about clarifying your vision, identifying your passions, and creating a roadmap for achieving your aspirations, big or small. You and a coach will collaborate on defining clear, measurable goals, developing actionable plans, and overcoming obstacles. Whether you want to improve relationships, enhance career satisfaction, cultivate greater well-being, or pursue personal passions, the coaching process is tailored to your unique needs and desires. Your coach will provide consistent support, encouragement, and accountability, helping you stay on track and celebrate every success.
The journey to a fulfilling life is rarely linear. It takes courage, vulnerability, self-reflection, and a willingness to embrace change. My own experience with burnout and healing has given me deep empathy for the challenges involved, fueling my passion for guiding others on their paths. Coaching provides the support and partnership you need to navigate this journey, empowering you to unlock your full potential and create a life that truly thrives.

Give us a brief overview of your career as an accountant.
I started my career as an accountant for the City of St. Peter, where I worked for seven years in various accounting roles, moving up as I gained experience. After that, I spent two years at Abdo, and another two years working with various government entities. Wanting to broaden my experience beyond government accounting, I started doing small business bookkeeping and payroll on the side while still working full-time. In 2018, I joined a small accounting firm in Mankato that provides tax and client accounting services (CAS). It was the perfect next step in my career. As the CAS manager, I help small businesses with payroll, bookkeeping, accounting compliance, consulting, year-end clean-up projects, and in recent years, we’ve expanded into small controller and CFO projects.
For whom do you work, and what do you enjoy about it?
I work for Eckberg Power LLC in Mankato, where I serve small businesses across Minnesota. My role allows me to build strong relationships with a variety of business owners, offering guidance and support as they grow. I love being part of their journey, seeing their hard work pay off, and continuously learning from the unique challenges each business faces.
How did you come to be the owner of Generations Boutique?
I was the previous owner’s accountant, and when the opportunity to take over Generations Boutique came up, it felt like the perfect challenge. I saw the potential to build something special—a space that brings women together, offers stylish and inclusive fashion, and creates a welcoming shopping experience. It was also a great opportunity to become more involved in the St. Peter community and contribute to its vibrant local business scene.
What attracted you to the women’s specialty clothing business?
I’ve always appreciated how clothing can empower people and boost confidence. I wanted to create a space where women of all shapes and sizes could find something they love and feel amazing wearing.
In what ways did you reinvent yourself with this venture?
Transitioning from accounting to retail required me to step out of my comfort zone. I had to embrace marketing, customer service, buying inventory, and running a storefront. It was a complete shift in mindset, but I welcomed the challenge.
What surprised you about yourself during the learning process of running a retail shop?
I was surprised by how much I enjoyed the creative side of retail—curating collections, styling pieces, and creating a brand identity. I’ve also found a new level of confidence in decision-making and leadership.
What was the most challenging?
Balancing inventory, understanding customer preferences, and navigating the seasonal nature of retail were all new challenges. Unlike accounting, where numbers follow a clear logic, retail has more unpredictability, which is an adjustment for me.
What’s the most enjoyable?
Interacting with customers and seeing them light up when they find the perfect outfit is by far one of the most rewarding parts of owning Generations Boutique. There’s something truly special about helping someone feel confident and beautiful in what they wear.
I also love collaborating with other small businesses on events, giveaways, and community initiatives. Supporting local vendors is a huge part of what makes Generations Boutique unique. We are currently carrying products from the following amazing local vendors:
Peter Hardware Co, Rustic Coop MN, The Bee Simple Co, and Woods 2 Goods.
As an accountant for small businesses, did the process of taking on a small business yourself teach you anything?
Absolutely! Even though I advise business owners every day, experiencing it firsthand gave me a new perspective. I now better understand the emotional investment, the day-to-day struggles, and the personal victories that come with owning a business.
How do you balance both jobs?
It’s all about time management, having a great team, and using the right tools. Utilizing software and report data helps me stay organized and efficient, allowing me to make informed decisions quickly. I’ve also learned the importance of delegating and outsourcing tasks such as marketing when the budget allows. Setting boundaries is key to ensuring I give my best to both roles. Some days are easier than others, but I focus on prioritizing what’s most important, knowing that certain tasks can wait when needed—and that’s okay.
Have you grown as a person from this experience? Without a doubt. This journey has pushed me to take risks, trust my instincts, and embrace creativity in ways I never had before. It’s been a huge personal and professional growth experience.
Were you interested in the fashion industry prior? I’ve always appreciated fashion, but I wouldn’t call myself a fashion expert. Owning the boutique has deepened my appreciation for style, trends, and the impact of a great outfit.
What is your favorite type of clothing or style to wear?
I love classic, timeless pieces that are both stylish and comfortable—think well-tailored blazers, chic denim, and high-quality basics that you can mix and match.
What would you never wear?
Probably anything super trendy that doesn’t align with my personal style. I believe in investing in pieces that last rather than chasing fast fashion.
Advice for anyone looking to embark on a new journey in business?
Go for it, but be prepared to learn constantly. Surround yourself with people who support and challenge you, trust your instincts, and don’t be afraid to take calculated risks. Also, remember that success doesn’t happen overnight—patience and persistence are key!
Embrace your natural skin tone
As spring break and proms approach, many young women turn to tanning beds to achieve a bronzed look. However, tanning beds carry risks of premature aging and skin cancer.
As a dermatology provider, I encourage girls and women of all ages to prioritize their long-term health and embrace their natural skin tone. Instead of indoor tanning or excessive sun exposure, consider safer alternatives such as self-tanning products or getting a spray tan to achieve the desired look without risking your health.
We may think a tan gives us a healthy glow, but in reality a tan is a sign of skin damage.
Indoor tanning exposes the skin to harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation, increasing the risk of skin cancer such as melanoma, basal cell carcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma. Notably, using tanning beds before age 20 increases the risk of developing melanoma, the most serious skin cancer, by a staggering 47%.
Additionally, indoor tanning poses greater risks than outdoor tanning, as tanning beds emit concentrated UV radiation, often at levels much higher than natural sunlight. This intensified exposure can significantly increase the risk of skin damage and cancer.
Outdoor tanning and sun exposure also damages the skin over time.
Prolonged exposure to UV radiation from the sun increases the risk of skin cancer, including melanoma. Proactive skin protection is essential for maintaining youthful and healthy skin.
Getting a base tan to prevent sunburn is a myth. Instead, practice safe sun on your beach vacation! The sun’s rays are strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Plan to take a couple sun breaks between these hours. Go inside for lunch, take a siesta, find a shaded outdoor café, or do a little shopping!
When you’re outside, wear a wide-brimmed hat, big sunglasses and broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30. Reapply every 2 hours and after swimming or sweating. Cover-ups are essential. Opt for dark or bright colors or tightly woven fabric. If you can see through fabric when you hold it up to the light, UV rays can reach your skin. You can also buy clothing with UPF (ultraviolet protection factor). Choose UPF 30 or UPF 50 for the best protection.
While sunlight can boost mood by promoting the production of serotonin, it’s important to balance sun exposure with proper sun protection. Enjoying the outdoors responsibly, by spending time in the sun during non-peak hours, wearing sunscreen, and seeking shade can positively impact mood without overexposing the skin to harmful UV radiation.
Sun exposure and indoor tanning accelerates premature aging of the skin. UV radiation damages the skin’s collagen and elastin fibers, leading to wrinkles, sagging skin, age spots, and uneven skin tone. Protecting your skin from UV radiation can help prevent premature aging and maintain a youthful appearance.
Tanning may seem desirable in the short term, but it’s essential to prioritize your long-term health and well-being. Embracing your natural skin tone and practicing sun safety look beautiful on you!
In the United States, there were 222.2 million magazine readers who were 18 years of age or older in 2021, which was 300,000 more readers than the previous year.*
Magazine advertising continues to provide a return on investment. Averaging a $3.94 return on every dollar invested in advertising, magazines offer the highest ROI across all media, which is 50% more than all other categories combined.
Many people spend a lot of time online, trying to record their everyday lives on Twitter or posting the newest selfie on Instagram. However, most readers only scan a website for 15 seconds before moving on. The physical experience of reading a magazine outperforms the virtual one and has the potential to establish a mind share.
Digital adverts come and go. Companies sometimes need to continue to pay to ensure that their advertising is wellplaced on websites and is repeated daily.
Magazines, on the other hand, are often published weekly or monthly. They have a longer “shelf life” since they sit in physicians’ waiting rooms, magazine racks, shops, malls, and supermarkets.
Many magazines are well-respected among their target audience; therefore, a magazine for advertising allows individuals to become acquainted with your brand and builds trust.
This identification is then reinforced when they encounter you in person, whether at your place of business or a local trade exhibition or charity event.
One advantage of magazine advertising is that many people give magazines to their friends and relatives. This raises the likelihood that your marketing will reach more prospective buyers.
Magazine advertising costs may begin as little as $300. This is less expensive than certain newspaper advertisements, phone book advertisements, and even radio or television advertisements.
Advertisements in magazines can be put on the inner front cover or buried in the back pages. It might be a branding ad or discount code incorporated in a QR Code, a survey, or even a little mini-article that appears to have been produced for a magazine.
Another advantage is that magazine advertising can help your business get more traffic and leads. You can increase interest in your product or service and persuade potential buyers to take action by targeting the correct audience.
