another proud Cup-experienCe

Well, we can put the Cup Final suits away for another year. I must admit though, I’m not too bothered about going out to Arsenal in the recent FA Cup tussle.

Apart from the obvious need to concentrate on our league performances and try and achieve promotion, I felt that failing to beat Arsenal at the Emirates, which Leeds thoroughly deserved to do, we were always going to struggle against the Gunners the second time around. In the fi rst game, Leeds were superb and, as I say, should have won the game. If Becchio had managed to convert his late header we would be turning out against the might of Huddersfi eld Town in the fourth round. It goes without saying that Leeds didn’t let themselves or the fans down in either game, but watching Arsenal in the fi rst twenty minutes or so in the replay at Elland Road, I was very frightened indeed by the visitors, they looked immense. Th at said, and much to their credit, our boys, steadied themselves and in the end made Arsenal work very hard for their victory. I for one was very proud of Leeds United.

Just on a personal note, the stage play about my fi rst book, Paint it White, was very successful in a 3-week sell-out show in Leeds last October. Th e actors were superb and were a credit to Leeds United and the fans. Th e show will now embark on a tour, which will be going all over the country, beginning at Scarborough in October, before travelling to several towns and cities including, Nottingham, Norwich, London, Cleethorpes and many, many more. I wish the cast the best of luck, but from what I’ve already seen, they won’t need it. Th e play will coincide with the release of my third book, No Glossing Over It which covers the injustices that our club have had to deal with throughout its existence.

This is a rough synopsis of the structure of the book: “Leeds United have always suffered at the hands of the footballing authorities and without these injustices they would have been the most successful team of all time. Between 1964 and 1992 Leeds United won 11 fabulous trophies - but came runners up just as often and missed out on many more titles and cups, not least, club football’s greatest prize, the European Cup in 1975. No Glossing Over It will show that the club were cheated out of many of these trophies and have been the victim of a pattern of serial abuse by the footballing authorities which continues to this day - most recently seen in the unprecedented 15-point sanction meted out at the start of the 2007/08 season.

There is no doubting that Leeds United are one of the world’s most famous clubs; but the ‘missing’ trophies still hurt. Every club in the world have been on the receiving end of poor decisions, but no other club has received harsher decisions given against them than Leeds. Now - with quotes from managers such as Bill Shankly, Lawrie McMenemy and Sven-Goran Eriksson, fresh interviews with respected referees including Jack Taylor, David Elleray, George Courtney, Roger Milford, Jeff Winter and Roger Kirkpatrick, a host of former Leeds players, plus the full co-operation of Don Revie’s son Duncan, and the son of Revie’s right-hand man, Les Cocker, this book is like no other on Leeds United and sheds new light on a shocking catalogue of events that shame the world of football”.
