Akousi prípadovou štúdiou môjho príspevku bude prostredie Piešťan a ich história plenérových výstav, z ktorých najmä Polymúzický priestor: Socha – objekt – svetlo – hudba v koncepcii teoretika Ľubora Káru vyniká nadčasovými kvalitami inštalácie a komplexnej prezentácie umenia v symbióze s architektúrou a okolitým prostredím. V zmysle absolútnej interdisciplinarity podujatia usporiadaného v roku 1970 predstavuje aj dnes veľmi podnetný zdroj inšpirujúci k aktualizácii vystavovania a možností sprostredkovania výtvarného umenia.

Ak nazeráme na dielo vo verejnom priestore ako na zástupný symbol stavu reflexie a akceptácie výtvarného umenia a jeho hodnôt v našej krajine, postrehneme, že ešte donedávna značne chátralo a nachádzalo sa na okraji spoločenského záujmu.

Vnímanie modernistických foriem umenia a architektúry, ktoré sa – paradoxne – uchádzalo o demokratizáciu a priblíženie bežnému občanovi, nezostalo na úrovni hlbšej percepcie u širšej verejnosti dodnes viac-menej akceptované.2 V dejinách tomu istotne nepomohli ani politické elity nasledujúce filozofiu schematického socialistického realizmu, čo rokmi len utvrdilo myšlienkové vzorce inklinujúce k zavrhovaniu až osočovaniu. A pokiaľ modernému umeniu v kolektívnej pamäti nezostala pripísaná žiadna hodnota, nemá tak následne čo vytvárať prekážku vo svedomí v súvislosti s jeho ničením. Moderná socha tak vo svojej forme síce zišla z podstavca s cieľom vytvoriť prirodzenú súčasť nášho životného prostredia.3 Všeobecne však došlo k mylnej interpretácii tohto posolstva, ak diela zostávajú zarastené machom, rozrastajúcimi sa kríkmi a pre developerov sú často iba banálnou prekážkou na ceste k novej výstavbe.

Osveta v oblasti prichádza z odbornej kultúrnej obce, ale aj občianskych združení. Asi najznámejšie združenie Čierne Diery vydalo v roku 2020 ihneď vypredaný náklad knihy venujúcej sa lokálnemu dedičstvu sôch vo verejnom priestore Piešťan. Podnázov knihy a esej

Staré a nové priestory pre sochu1

Mesto ako galéria4 odkazuje na myšlienku či ambíciu zriadenia galérie pod holým nebom5, ktorej korene siahajú do 60. rokov 20. storočia a súvisia s vývojom moderných foriem sochárskeho média a vystavovania.6 Pocta myšlienke vystavovania pod holým nebom sa zároveň v roku 2021 udeje na nedožité 100. výročie Trizuljaka, a tak sa v rámci akejsi symbolickej rekonvalescencie, zo zdrojov Fondu na podporu umenia, znovuosadia do verejného priestoru Trizuljakove konštruktivistické diela z kolekcie Variácie na Nekonečno.

Novovzniknutá stála expozícia Infinity tak má obnoviť ambíciu postupného zriaďovania stálej expozície kvalitného výtvarného umenia v otvorenom priestore piešťanského mestského parku.

Pre realizáciu sochárskych výstav v Piešťanoch bolo však vždy kľúčovým samotné prostredie. Ich identita utvorená prírodným bohatstvom termálnych prameňov a príjemným urbanizmom povýšila mesto aj na výstavnú scénu ideálnu pre inštaláciu výtvarného umenia. Atmosféra prináležiaca regenerácii a oddychu umožňovala pomalé a hlboké rozjímanie, čo bolo pre iniciátorov a iniciátorky podujatia dobrým predpokladom nastolenia dialógu v súvislosti s novým konceptom tzv. rozšíreného poľa sochárstva7, ktoré sa uplatnilo najviac práve v roku 1970 realizáciou interdisciplinárnej výstavy Polymúzický priestor s podtitulom Socha – objekt – svetlo – hudba.8 Obdobie najväčšieho rozmachu a najinvenčnejších prístupov vo vystavovaní moderného umenia, ktoré opustilo priestory galérií a múzeí, sa v súčasnosti ukázalo ako podnetné aj v iných súvislostiach, keď sme kvôli pandemickým obmedzeniam stratili prístup k živej kultúre a umeniu v kultúrnych inštitúciách.

Súčasná globalizácia prebiehajúca v online priestore predstavuje, narozdiel od toho fyzického, skoro bezhraničný virtuálno-verejný priestor dostupný pre všetkých z ktoréhokoľvek miesta planéty iba prostredníctvom inteligentného zariadenia a internetu.

nielen domácemu, ale aj zahraničnému publiku. A tak sa symbolicky nachádzame opäť v pozícii, keď nastávajú akési reminiscencie na „zlaté“ 60. roky a keď opäť dokážeme držať krok s dianím okolitého sveta. Okrem občianskeho sektora sú však v posledných rokoch iniciatívne aj inštitúcie. Mestské kultúrne stredisko mesta Piešťany sa okrem spoluúčasti na osádzaní expozície Infinity podieľa aj na aplikácii, ktorá prostredníctvom dobovej fotografickej dokumentácie plenérových výstav organizovaných v parku dokáže cez obrazovku smartfónu premietnuť návštevníkom mesta reprodukciu diela, ktoré vzniklo v rámci Polymúzického priestoru. Prostredníctvom aplikácie je vytváraný akýsi digitálny archív napojený na súradnice lokalizujúce dielo zrealizované v minulosti pre konkrétne miesto a zobrazuje jeho fotografickú či 3D modelovanú reprodukciu. Okrem existujúcich diel v priestore sa tak návštevník v roku 2021 bude môcť prechádzať aj ďalšou historickou vrstvou krajiny dostupnou prostredníctvom virtuálnej reality.

Takzvaná galéria pod holým nebom sa stala v súčasnej dobe postihnutej zákazmi verejných podujatí a stretávaní sa v súvislosti so zamedzením šírenia respiračného ochorenia Covid-19 zaujímavým obsahom na propagáciu aktivít venujúcich sa umeniu vo verejnom priestore aj pre oblastné organizácie cestovného ruchu. Umelecko-historické dedičstvo dostupné formou prechádzky po čerstvom vzduchu predstavuje jednu z mála sezónnych alternatív, ktoré majú napomôcť k rozvoju pozastaveného kultúrneho turizmu.

Je totiž zdravou a bezpečnou „covid-free“ alternatívou zmysluplného trávenia voľného času vo fyzickej realite. A keďže v súčasnosti nášmu fyzickému priestoru konkuruje čoraz viac alternatívnych, digitálnych a virtuálnych priestorov, začať opravovať a uchovávať to najlepšie, čo nás tu na Zemi prezentuje, by malo byť najaktuálnejšou prioritou. Nech je teda táto skutočnosť námetom pre ďalšie uvažovanie o uchovávaní a utváraní priestorov pre sochu v digitálnom veku.

5 V roku 2020 vzniklo ako výsledok spolupráce na knihe a mapovaní aktivistami memorandum o spolupráci medzi Mestským kultúrnym strediskom, mestom Piešťany, Službami Mesta Piešťany, zástupcami

rodiny Trizuljakovcov, urbanistkou a ateliérom 4D krajinných architektiek stojacich za obnovou mestského parku, ktorá okrem osadenia expozície Infinity vráti za pomoci finančnej realizácie o. z. Čierne Diery do priestoru kúpeľného parku monumentálne dielo Pocta IX. Symfónii. Dielo, pôvodne vystavené pred Hotelom Thermia v rámci Polymúzického priestoru, sa hneď po výstave v roku 1970 zosilňujúcimi sa normalizačnými tlakmi odvlieklo (zachránilo) pre svoje modernistické kvality mimo kúpeľný ostrov. 51 rokov stálo vedľa garáže patriacej kúpeľom, skryté za betónovými múrmi.

A kind of case study of my contribution will be the environment of Piešťany and its history of open-air exhibitions, of which especially Polymusic space: Sculpture - object - light - music in the concept of theorist Ľubor Kára stands out in timeless qualities of installation and complex presentation of art in symbiosis with architecture and environment. In terms of the absolute interdisciplinarity of the event organized in 1970, it is still a very stimulating source of inspiration for updating the exhibition and the possibilities of mediating the fine arts.

If we look at the work in public space as a placeholder of the state of reflection and acceptance of fine art and its values ​​in our country, we will notice that until recently it fell into disrepair and was on the edge of social interest. The perception of modernist forms of art and architecture, which - paradoxically - sought to democratize and get closer to the average citizen, has not remained more or less accepted at the level of deeper perception by the general public.2 In history, political elites following the philosophy of schematic socialist realism certainly did not help, which for years only confirmed the thought patterns tending to reject and defamation. And as long as no value has been ascribed to modern art in the collective memory, there is nothing that would subsequently create an obstacle in the conscience in connection with its destruction.

The modern sculpture, in its form, came off the pedestal in order to create a natural part of our environment.3 In general, however, this message has been misinterpreted if the works remain overgrown with moss, growing bushes and for developers are often just a banal obstacle to new construction.

Enlightenment in the area comes from the professional cultural community, but also from civic associations. Probably the most famous civic association Čierne Diery published in 2020 a sold-out edition of a book devoted to the local heritage of sculptures

in the public space of Piešťany. Subtitle of the book and essay The City as a Gallery4 refers to the idea or ambition of establishing an open-air gallery5, whose roots go back to the 1960s and are related to the development of modern forms of sculptural medium and exhibition.6 On the occasion of the late 100th birthday of Trizuljak, in 2021 a tribute will be given to the idea of exhibiting in the open air, and as part of a kind of symbolic convalescence, from the resources of the Art Support Fund, Trizuljak’s constructivist works from the Variácie na Nekonečno collection (Variations to Infinity) will be re-installed in the public space. The newly established permanent exhibition Infinity is thus intended to renew the ambition of the gradual establishment of a permanent exhibition of quality fine art in the open space of the city park in Piešťany.

However, for the realization of sculptural exhibitions in Piešťany, the environment itself has always been crucial. Its identity created by the natural wealth of thermal springs and pleasant urbanism has elevated the city to an exhibition scene ideal for the installation of fine art. The atmosphere belonging to regeneration and relaxation allowed for slow and deep contemplation, which was a good assumption for the initiators of the event to set up a dialogue in connection with the new concept of the so-called extended field of sculpture 7, which was most used in 1970 with the implementation of the interdisciplinary exhibition Polymusic Space with the subtitle Sculpture - Object Light - Music.8 The period of the greatest expansion and most inventive approaches in the exhibition of modern art, which left the galleries and museums, has now proved to be stimulating in other contexts as we have lost access to living culture and art in cultural institutions due to pandemic restrictions. The current globalization taking place in the online space represents, in contrast to the physical, almost boundless virtual-public space acces-

sible to everyone from anywhere on the planet only through intelligent devices and the Internet. We can present important content not only to domestic but also to foreign audiences in an engaging way. And so, we are symbolically again in a position when there are some reminiscences of the “golden” 60s and when we can again keep up with what is happening around the world. However, in addition to the civic sector, institutions have also taken the initiative in recent years. In addition to participating in the Infinity exhibition, the Municipal Cultural Center of Piešťany also participates in an application which, through period photographic documentation of open-air exhibitions organized in the park, can project a reproduction of a work created within the Polymusic space via a smartphone screen.

Through the app, a kind of digital archive is created and is then connected to the coordinates locating the work created in the past for a specific place and displays its photographic or 3D reproduction. In addition to the existing works in the space, in 2021 the visitor will be able to walk through another historical layer of the landscape accessible through virtual reality.

The so-called open-air gallery, affected by the banning of public events and meetings in connection with the prevention of the spread of respiratory disease COVID-19, has now become interesting content for the promotion of activities dedicated to art in public space and for regional tourism organizations. The art-historical heritage available in the form of a walk in the fresh air is one of the few seasonal alternatives that are supposed to help develop freezed cultural tourism. It is a healthy and safe “covid-free” alternative to meaningful leisure time in physical reality. And as more and more alternative, digital, and virtual spaces compete with our physical space today, the most current priority should be to begin repairing and preserving the best that presents us here on Earth. Let this fact be the subject for further reflection on the preservation and creation of spaces for sculpture in the digital age.

Linda Blahová je vyštudovanou animátorkou a pedagogičkou výtvarného umenia. Štúdium galerijnej a muzeálnej pedagogiky absolvovala na Trnavskej univerzite v Trnave, kde jej nasledujúce smerovanie zásadne ovplyvnil vedúci sochárskeho ateliéru, Michal Moravčík. V poslednom ročníku štúdia bola vybranou štipendistkou programu Nádvorie Kampus, v ktorom rástla pod mentoringom Alexandry Kusej. Momentálne pôsobí ako dramaturgicko-výchovná pracovníčka Mestského kultúrneho strediska v Piešťanoch. Zaujíma ju interakcia vizuálneho umenia so širokým, predovšetkým laickým publikom. Viesť dialóg o problematikách súčasného umenia si precvičila už ako mediátorka v bratislavskej Kunsthalle a medzinárodne aj v pražskej Meetfactory. Časť jej vysokoškolského umelecko-historického výskumu venovaného výstavám, známych pod názvom Socha piešťanských parkov či Polymúzický priestor – socha, objekt, svetlo, hudba, bola publikovaná knižne v spolupráci s občianskym združením Čierne diery, ktoré sa zameriava na mapovanie a propagáciu pamiatok a kultúrnych fenoménov na Slovensku. V súčasnosti pracuje na projekte Piešťany – Mesto ako galéria, ktorý vedie v spolupráci s urbanistkou, krajinnými architektkami, architektmi, predstaviteľmi mestských organizácií a správcami pozostalosti sochára Alexandra Trizuljaka. Projekt v dramaturgii Mestského kultúrneho strediska ráta s obnovením kvality podujatia Sochy piešťanských parkov a aktualizuje možnosti prezentácie a realizácie tohto podujatia. Projektové aktivity sa sústreďujú na utváranie ideových koncepcií častí mestských parkových častí vo vzťahu k ich historickým vrstvám. Rieši aj plán presunu existujúcich sôch s prihliadnutím na vznikajúcu koncepciu a obnovu mestského parku.

Jednou z pilotných akcií projektu na rok 2021 je zriadenie stálej sochárskej expozície s názvom Infinity, ktorá je zároveň poctou k 100. výročiu narodenia Alexandra Trizuljaka, jedného z prvých organizátorov sochárskych výstav v Piešťanoch.

Linda Blahová is a graduated animator and pedagogue of fine arts. She studied gallery and museum pedagogy at the University of Trnava in Trnava, where her subsequent direction was fundamentally influenced by the head of the sculpture studio, Michal Moravčík. In the last year of her studies, she was a selected scholarship holder of the Nádvorie Kampus program, in which she grew under the mentoring of Alexandra Kusá. She is currently working as a dramaturgical and educational worker at the Municipal Cultural Center in Piešťany. She is interested in the interaction of visual art with a wide, especially lay audience. She has practiced how to conduct a dialogue on contemporary art issues as a mediator at the Kunsthalle in Bratislava and internationally at the Meetfactory in Prague. Part of her university art-historical research dedicated to exhibitions, known as the Socha piešťanských parkov (Sculpture of Piešťany Parks) or Polymusic space - sculpture, object, light, music, was published as a book in cooperation with the civic association Čierne diery, which focuses on mapping and promoting monuments and cultural phenomena in Slovakia. Linda is currently working on the project Piešťany - City as a gallery, which she is leading in cooperation with the urban planner, landscape architects, architects, representatives of city organizations and the administrators of the estate of the sculptor Alexander Trizuljak. The project in the dramaturgy of the Municipal Cultural Center counts on the restoration of the quality of the Sculptures of Piešťany Parks event and updates the possibilities of presentation and realization of this event. Project activities focus on creating the ideological concepts of parts of city park in relation to their historical layers. It also addresses the plan for the relocation of existing sculptures, taking into account the emerging concept and renewal of the city park. One of the pilot actions of the project for 2021 is the establishment of a permanent sculpture exhibition called Infinity, which is also a tribute to the 100th anniversary of the birth of Alexander Trizuljak, one of the first organizers of sculpture exhibitions in Piešťany.

Súčasný stav sochárskych diel na území mesta Bratislavy

Na území mesta Bratislavy sa nachádza vyše 700 diel, ktoré sme zaradili do Súpisu sôch mesta Bratislavy 1945 – 2012.

Na jeseň 2020 som opätovne zmapovala stav sochárskych diel na území mesta Bratislavy, nakoľko nebol skontrolovaný od roku 2012. Projekt sa uskutočnil vďaka podpore Nadácie mesta Bratislavy.

Oproti stavu z roku 2012 sa veľa nezmenilo, iba k horšiemu. Väčšina diel potrebuje ošetrenie. Jediné mestské časti, ktoré sa postarali o diela vo svojom priestore, sú MČ Dúbravka a MČ Rača. V roku 2012 dostala každá mestská časť jeden výtlačok súpisu diel, ale iba niektoré úrady s daným materiálom aktívne pracovali v prospech sôch na svojom území.

V Dúbravke sú všetky sochy aj fontány ošetrené už pár rokov. Kamenné sochy sú očistené, prerastajúca vegetácia bola odstránená. Dokonca aj betónová preliezka s keramickými reliéfmi od J. Šicka bola ošetrená citlivo.

MČ Rača sa v spolupráci so Spolkom priateľov Rače takisto o svoje diela stará . Niektoré boli ošetrené i profesionálne (J. Melišková-Kay, Stéla, 1973). Jedná sa o keramickú kompozíciu na betónovom podklade, kde chýbajúce časti keramiky boli nahradené replikami, ktoré priznávajú, že nie sú pôvodné. Naopak fontány boli reštaurované pomerne necitlivo. Kachličkové obklady na múrikoch bazénov boli vybrané nevhodne farebne aj štruktúrou a sochy vo fontánach, pôvodne zo surového betónu, sú pretreté nevhodnými farebnými nátermi.

Iné mestské časti sa o diela komplexne nepostarali. Staré mesto je na tom relatívne dobre, nakoľko zväčša vlastní diela z trvácich materiálov (bronz), ktoré nepodliehajú pôsobeniu smogu ani mechanickým poškodeniam. O zeleň sa mesto stará primerane, takže zarastanie je skôr výnimkou. MČ Ružinov aj MČ Petržalka sú priestory s najväčším počtom diel na svojich sídliskách. Obe územia sú vhodné na organizovanie exkurzií, nakoľko diel je tu dosť blízko seba.

Bohužiaľ väčšina z nich je zanedbaná. Sú to najmä

kamenné sochy, ktoré vyžadujú očistenie a problémom je aj vegetácia. Niektoré diela potrebujú reštaurovanie. Niekoľko sôch je posprejovaných, je zničený pôvodný náter, alebo je naopak pridaný nevhodný náter. Kamenné sochy sú zničené smogom. Často je neprimeraným zásahom narušené okolie diela. Bežné je umiestnenie smetných košov v blízkosti diela, prekvapivo to vo viacerých prípadoch nikomu neprekáža (T. Lugs, Vtáci, Račianska ul.). Na Račianskej ulici bolo miesto na umiestnenie kontajnerov vytvorené nedávno, je vydláždené, čiže umiestnené cielene.

Okolo sôch bola vysadená v priebehu desaťročí zeleň, ktorá ich zakrýva, alebo ohrozuje mechanicky, i keď niekde je vegetácia redukovaná. Najviac ohrozené sú keramické steny v Ružinove umiestnené na budovách materských škôl. Materské školy v Ružinove boli navrhnuté ako typizované budovy, ktoré majú na čelnej strane keramické dielo zo začiatku 70. rokov.

Reliéfy sú od významných autorov (J. Marth, R. Fila), aj sú jedinečným dokladom keramickej tvorby tohto obdobia. Všetky sú abstraktné. V dvoch prípadoch sa však vegetácia dostala až k stene a konáre sa priamo opierajú o keramický povrch. Problémom je aj súčasná nevhodná výsadba drevín, ktoré v priebehu niekoľkých rokov prekryjú dielo. Pri Zdravotnom stredisku Fedinova boli pred sochy A. Bilkoviča vysadené pomerne blízko nové stromy.

U niektorých sôch by bolo vhodné uvažovať o ich premiestnení. Napríklad Stretnutie od E. Venkova a Z. Venkovovej na Hálovej ulici stojí pred budovou školy na asfaltovej ploche. Už roky sa tam parkuje, tak­ že socha je trvalo obklopená autami. Iné sochy pred typizovanými budovami škôl v Petržalke sú umiestnené na trávniku pred školou, takže by bolo vhodné v tomto prípade uvažovať nad presunom, ktoré by bolo v prospech diela.

Niektoré diela by si vyžadovali premiestnenie do zbierok inštitúcií, predovšetkým dizajn A. Bilkoviča pre detské ihriská. V súčasnosti nie sú tieto hracie

prvky z laminátu využívané a len chátrajú v areáloch bývalých škôlok v Dúbravke a Petržalke. Jedno z diel, Mušľa, ktoré sa nachádza v areáli Starz pri Draždiaku v Petržalke, bude po rokovaniach s majiteľom a Múzeom dizajnu nadobudnuté do zbierok a reštaurované. Je to presne ten ochotný prístup, ktorý by si zaslúžili všetky diela v majetku súkromníkov. Mnohí zväčša dielo vyhodia, niekedy naschvál, lebo sú o jeho hodnote informovaní (napríklad ihrisko A. Bilkoviča na Triblavine).

Niekoľko diel zmizlo, napr. socha od L. Korkoša pred budovou školy v Ovsišti. Z cintorína vo Vrakuni zmizli prototypy náhrobných kameňov od A. Bilkoviča.

Oficiálna písomná reakcia bývalého správcu Vrakuňa P. Gracha ukazuje, že sa ich chcel zbaviť pod zámienkou ich zlého stavu (za ktorý je zodpovedný on sám!).

Na hodnotu tých prototypov ho upozornil I. Švihran už v roku 2016, kedy ich umiestnili do skladu. Archívne fotografie ukazujú, že súbor prototypov mal minimálne 20 rôznych typov náhrobkov. Na cintoríne sa nachádzajú ešte na hroboch, najčastejšie sa opakuje asi sedem typov. Bohužiaľ, chýbajú práve tie atypické vo forme stĺpov. Súbor nebude možné zostaviť kompletný, ale je možné spraviť kópie z toho, čo zostalo.

V ohrození sú diela, ktoré nemajú majiteľa, napr. ubytovňa Uránia v Ružinove. Budova je už dlhšie opustená. Neviem, či bude majiteľ uvažovať o obnove či strhnutí, ale treba cielene pracovať na záchrane keramiky od R. Filu. Ide o jediné jeho dielo vo verejnom priestore, nakoľko sa tejto sfére nevenoval.

Starostlivosť o diela si vyžaduje záujem mestských častí, pravidelnú kontrolu ich stavu a ošetrovanie. Ku každému dielu treba pristupovať individuálne. Verím, že z iniciatívy mesta Bratislavy aj ostatné mestské časti pristúpia k riešeniu ošetrenia svojich diel.

Od roku 2012 pribudli aj nové diela, ale napriek existencii komisie hodnotiacej nové realizácie, produkcia je veľmi nízkej kvality. Som členkou tejto komisie, ale aj diela, ktoré prešli naším schvaľovaním, sú v realite

veľmi slabé. Sama som na mieste bola prekvapená, že to skutočne vyzerá horšie v teréne ako pri prezentácii návrhu (Pomník T. Zemana vo Vajnoroch).

Realizovaná bola figúra na sokli, ktorá je veľmi nevhodných rozmerov. Navyše, v dlani dotyčného je umiestnené srdce, takže nakoniec je z toho gýč namiesto charakterovej štúdie mučeníka ŠTB. Podobných prípadov je viac, napríklad u pomníkov A. Srholca.

Dobrých realizácií je menej. Vynikajúci je pomník D. Ursínyho v Dúbravke od M. Podmanickej, ktorý je koncipovaný ako symbolický artefakt, kniha básní.

Nanovo bolo umiestnené dielo Š. Baniča v správe bratislavského letiska, ktoré dlhé roky mali v sklade a žiadali Komisiu pre pamätihodnosti o stanovisko.

Nakoniec ho umiestnili pred budovou, ale nie na pôvodné miesto.

Bratislava má veľa sochárskych diel vo verejnom priestore, ktoré sú rôznej kvality, ale všetky predstavujú vrstvy pamäte mesta a tvoria jeho identitu. Z toho dôvodu si zaslúžia ochranu a starostlivosť. Ľudí čoraz viac zaujíma aj kultúrne dedičstvo nedávnej doby a sochy spred roku 1989 k nemu neodmysliteľne patria.

Treba dúfať, že sa mestské časti postavia k dielam konečne zodpovedne.

There are more than 700 artworks on the territory of Bratislava, which we have included in the List of Sculptures of Bratislava 1945-2012. In the autumn of 2020, I mapped the condition of the sculptures in Slovakia again, as it has not been checked since 2012.

The project was carried out thanks to the support of the Bratislava City Foundation.

Compared to the situation in 2012, not much has changed, only if for the worse. Most artworks need treatment. The only city districts that took care of the works in their area are Dúbravka and Rača. In 2012, each city district received one copy of the list of works, but only some offices actively worked with the given material in favor of the sculptures in their territory.

In Dúbravka, all sculptures and fountains have been treated for a few years. The stone sculptures are cleaned, the overgrown vegetation has been removed.

City district Rača also takes care of its works in cooperation with the Rača Friends Association. Some works were treated professionally (J. Melíšková-Kay, Stéla, 1973). It is a ceramic composition on a concrete base, where the missing parts of the ceramic have been replaced by replicas that admit that they are not original. On the contrary, the fountains were restored relatively insensitively. The tiles on the pool walls were chosen in an unsuitable colour and the structure, and the sculptures in the fountains, originally made of raw concrete, are overlaid with unsuitable paints.

The other city districts did not comprehensively take care of the works. City district Staré mesto is relatively well off, as it mostly owns the works made of durable materials (bronze), which are resistant to smog and mechanical damage. The city takes good care of the greenery, so overgrowth is more of an exception.

City district Ružinov and city district Petržalka are the premises with the largest number of works in their housing estates. Both areas are suitable for organiz-

ing excursions, as the works are quite close to each other. Unfortunately, most of the works are neglected.

It is mainly stone sculptures that require cleaning and the vegetation is also a problem. Some works need restoration. Several sculptures are sprayed, the original paint is destroyed or, on the contrary, an unsuitable paint is added. The stone sculptures are destroyed by smog. The surroundings of the work are often disturbed by inappropriate intervention. It is common to place rubbish bins near the art work, surprisingly it doesn’t hinder anyone in several cases (T. Lugs, Vtáci (Birds), Račianska street). On Račianska street, the spot for placing the garbage containers was created recently, it is paved, i.e. placed in a targeted manner.

Around the sculptures, the greenery has been planted over the decades, covering them or endangering them mechanically, although in some places the vegetation is reduced. The ceramic walls in Ružinov located on the kindergarten buildings are the most endangered.

Kindergartens in Ružinov were designed as standardized buildings, which have ceramic works from the early 70’s on the front side. The reliefs are from important authors (J. Marth, R. Fila), they are also unique evidence of ceramic work of this period, all of them are abstract. In two cases, however, the vegetation has grown to the wall and the branches rest directly on the ceramic surface. Another problem is the current inappropriate tree planting, which will cover the art work within a few years. At the Fedinova Medical Center, new trees were planted relatively close to the sculptures of A. Bilkovič.

For some sculptures, it would be appropriate to consider relocating them. For example, sculpture Stretnutie (Meeting) by E. Venkov and Z. Venkovová on Hálova Street stands in front of the school building on an asphalt surface. This place has been used as a parking lot for years, so the statue is permanently surrounded by cars. Other sculptures in front of the standardized school buildings in Petržalka are placed

on the lawn in front of the school, so in this case it would be appropriate to consider a transfer that would benefit the work. Some works would require relocation to the institutional collections, especially the design of A. Bilkovič for playgrounds. At present, these play elements made of laminate are not used and only fall into disrepair in the premises of former kindergartens in city districts Dúbravka and Petržalka. One of the works, Mušľa (Shell), which is located in the Starz complex near Draždiak lake in Petržalka, will be acquired into collections and restored after negotiations with the owner of Slovak Design Museum. This is exactly the willing approach that all works owned by private individuals deserve. Many of them actually throw away the work, sometimes on purpose, because they are informed about its value (for example, playground in Triblavina by A. Bilkovič).

Several works have disappeared, e.g. statue by L. Korkoš in front of the school building in Ovsište.

Prototype tombstones by A. Bilkovič disappeared from the cemetery in Vrakuňa. The official written statement of the former administrator of Vrakuňa P. Grach shows that he wanted to get rid of them under the pretext of their bad condition (for which he is responsible!).

I. Švihran drew his attention to the value of those prototypes already in 2016, when they placed them in storage. Archive photographs show that the set of prototypes had at least 20 different types of tombstones.

They are still on the graves in the cemetery, most often about seven types are repeated. Unfortunately, the atypical ones in the form of columns are missing. It won’t be possible to compile the complete file, but it’s possible to make copies of what’s left.

Works that have no owner are at risk, e.g. hostel Uránia in Ružinov. The building has been abandoned for a long time. I don´t know if the owner will consider restoration or demolition, but it’s necessary to work on targeted rescue of ceramics by R. Fila. It’s his only work in public space, as he did not devote himself to this sphere.

Care of the works requires the interest of the city districts, regular inspection of their condition and treatment. Each work must be approached individually.

I believe that on the initiative of the city of Bratislava, other city districts will also approach the treatment of their works.

New work has been added since 2012, but despite the existence of a commission evaluating new implementations, the production is of very low quality. I am a member of this commission, but even the works that have passed our approval are, in fact, of very poor quality. I myself was surprised on the spot that it really looks worse in the field than during the presentation of the design (Monument to T. Zeman in Vajnory). A figu­re on the plinth was realized, which is of very inappropriate dimensions. In addition, the heart is placed in the palm of the person, so in the end it’s just a kitsch instead of a character study of the martyr of ŠTB (Czechoslovak State Security). There are several similar cases, for example in the monuments of A. Srholec.

There are fewer good implementations. The monument of D. Ursíny in Dúbravka by M. Podmanická is excellent, it is conceived as a symbolic artefact, a book of poems.

The work of Š. Banič in the administration of Bratislava Airport was relocated. This work had been in the storage for many years and the competent persons asked the Commission for Landmarks for a statement.

Eventually, they placed it in front of the building, but not in its original location.

Bratislava has many sculptures in public space, which are of different quality, but all represent layers of the memory of the city and form its identity. That is why they deserve protection and care. People are also increasingly interested in the cultural heritage of recent times and sculptures made before 1989 are an integral part of it. It’s also to be hoped that the city districts will finally approach the works responsibly.

Mgr. Sabina Jankovičová, ArtD., an art historian, has been dealing mainly with sculpture in the public space of the second half of the 20th century since 2005. She studied at the Faculty of Arts at Comenius University in Bratislava and at the Institute of Design at Slovak University of Technology, where, as part of her doctoral thesis, she began her research in sculpture and design from the period of normalization (1972 - 1989).

She is the author of articles, studies and books on monumental sculpture in public space. In the years 2011 -2013 she mapped sculptures in Bratislava. The list of sculptures was published in printed and also electronic form as the first systematic mapping of sculptures in the public space of the city. In the autumn of 2020, the sculptures on the territory of Bratislava were re-inspected and their current state was evaluated in order to ensure their restoration and protection by the city of Bratislava.

Outdoorgallery_vonkajšia galéria, bez kamenných múrov v meste Nitra a Banská Bystrica Ambíciou projektu „Outdoor gallery” - galérie bez kamenných múrov - bolo vytvoriť „24/7” stabilný a otvorený priestor, určený na prezentácie súčasného vizuálneho umenia vo verejnom priestore na Slovensku. V jeseni 2009 odštartovala túto myšlienku sochárka Nina A. Šošková (1983) spolu s umelcom Danielom Didom (1986).

Vedeli, že platforma tohto druhu nebola vo svete žiadnou novinkou, avšak na Slovensku chýbala. Dovtedy nevyužitý kamenný podstavec (postavený investorom na nezadefinovaný zámer), ktorý bol súčasťou výstavby Galérie OC Mlyny Nitra, bol pre výtvarníkov výzvou.1 A podarilo sa im ho získať. Vonkajšia galéria sa nachádzala v tesnej blízkosti obchodného centra, kde dominovala nenáročná forma trávenia voľného času a správania sa jedincov, podriadená konzumným chúťkam oddychu a nakupovania. Podstavec, situovaný pred OC Mlyny Nitra, fungoval ako základňa - defacto fyzické miesto existencie galérie do roku 2012, ktoré častokrát zámerne prestupovalo za pomyselné hranice tohto kamenného kvádra. Autori oslovili umelcov, teoretikov, odborníkov a vypracovali plán a výstavný harmonogram na rok 2010.2 V roku 2011 zakladá Outdoor gallery Šošková aj v meste Banská Bystrica. Vyberá si miesto bývalého pamätníka V. I. Lenina, na ktorom do roku 1991 stála 4,5 m monumentálna socha vodcu svetového proletariátu od akad. sochára Miroslava Ksandra (osadená na prelome 70. - 80. rokov 20. storočia). Jedinečná lokácia odstráneného pamätníka v blízkosti centra bola pre ňu tiež ideálnym priestorom na prezentáciu súčasného umenia, ktorého ambíciou bolo reflektovať historickú pamäť samotného miesta, v kontexte jeho aktuálneho potenciálu ako miesta pre dočasnú realizáciu umenia určeného pre verejný priestor.

Podoby „public” art pod autorskou kuratelou výtvarníčky a sochárky, Niny A. Šoškovej

V spolupráci s prizvanými umelcami a teoretikmi autorka pripravuje výstavný program pre obe galérie. Dôležitú súčasť tvoria sprievodné aktivity, ako sú odborné prednášky či diskusie k téme3, ďalej spolupráca v oboch mestách s Nitrianskou galériou, ako aj Stredoslovenskou galériou v Banskej Bystrici, s kultúrnym centrom KC Záhrada v Banskej Bystrici aj so študentmi vysokých umeleckých škôl na Slovensku.

K podstavcu v Nitre, na mieste typickom pre dnešok a jej podoby (ne)kultúry, tak pribudla ďalšia základňa s podobne paradoxným kontextom, odkazujúcim do nedávnej minulosti a na jej rezíduá v súčasnosti. „Šošková trpezlivo vybavovala povolenia na Mestskom úrade v Banskej Bystrici, aby tu mohla aspoň sporadicky (raz ročne) realizovať projekty najmä sochárskeho charakteru v ideovej väzbe na historickú pamäť.

Priestor poskytuje viacerým umelcom, pričom oni invenčne a spravidla provokatívne reagovali na ducha miesta a bizarnosť onoho predtým okázalého, dnes prázdneho miesta, ktoré tu dodnes nemá žiadnu logiku ani opodstatnenie.”4 Priestor, premyslene členený Šoškovou na viacero umeleckých realizácií na pôvodnom pamätníku, zastupujú renomovaní domáci a zahraniční umelci: M. Rosmány (SK)_Špeka/Špekáč, V. Magid (CZ_Ukrytá socha, J. Kyša (SK)_Červená skalka. Súčasťou výstavného plánu je aj projekt od A. M. Chisa a L. Tkáčovej v spolupráci s kurátorkou M. Keratovou a SSG BB (SK). Posledné dielo pred ukončením fungovania galérie v BB je od M. Kochana (SK). „Pražský výtvarník a teoretik Václav Magid (1979) v júli 2013 poňal ono obskúrne verejné miesto ako skutočný funkčný pamätník, ktorým tu aj dlhé roky bol. Postavil rozmernú inštaláciu – drevenú konštrukciu typu bednenia slúžiaceho počas vojen a bombardovania ako ochrana pomníkov pred bombardovaním. Lešenie a bednenie ako nosné prvky inštalácie „Ukrytá socha” tu jasne symbolizovali vzťah národa a ľudí k pamiatkam. Jeho dielo vyvolávalo otázky: Je práve Ksandrov Lenin ten typ pamätníka, ktorý sme mali a chceli

uchovávať či ochrániť? Ochraňujeme vlastne „neprítomnosť” sochy ako gesto proti totalite ako diktátu moci jednej ideológie? Magid chcel hlavne upozorniť na skrytú či mystifikovanú podobu pretrvávania (neo)komunistických či skôr neototalitných praktík v politike na Slovensku i v Čechách, ktoré majú fatálny dosah na súčasnú kultúru.

Počas leta (1. 8. 2014) prebehlo v komornom a neformálnom duchu verejné osadenie plastiky „Chrasta” od Martina Kochana (1981). Pohľadovo je toto dielo pre okoloidúcich skôr nenápadné. Je to kruhovitá, expresívne traktovaná patinovaná „pľacka“. Zbadá ju len ten, kto vylezie na schodisko a podstavec. Kochan týmto dielom akoby zacelil ranu – prázdne betónové miesto (dieru) pod pôvodnou monumentálnou sochou Lenina. Dielo významovo ponúka viaceré výklady, no s ohľadom na špecifikum miesta a jeho neblahú pamäť, poukazuje najmä na neriešenie nového využitia či zvýtvarnenia daného mestského areálu už vyše 24 rokov. Dielo je pomerne radikálnym gestom a súčasne výzvou autora svojej generácii vysporiadať sa konečne s minulosťou. Je tu silne prítomná myšlienka chorobnosti a potreby zahojenia či vyliečenia sa z traumy minulosti. Chrasta je prísľub nového začiatku alebo vytúžená bodka a koniec jedného príbehu. V tomto zmysle je dielo Martina Kochana po realizácii Václava Magida akési zavŕšenie idey – potreby regenerácie spoločnosti, ktorej hlavnou reprezentáciou a identifikáciou je predsa jej kultúra.5 Výstavný priestor „Outdoor gallery” v oboch mestách zaniká viacmenej svojim nepochopením od zriaďovateľov a investorov v rokoch 2013 (Nitra) a 2015 (Banská Bystrica).

MEDZICENTRUM_festival umenia pre verejný priestor (2009 - 2017) Počas obdobia 2009 - 2018 sa Šoškovej projekty postupne formujú a vďaka grantovým dotáciám naberajú na kvalite a kontinualite. Už počas dok-

torandského štúdia zakladá s kolegami workshop „Medzicentrum”, ktorého myšlienkou je prepojiť študentov z vysokých umeleckých škôl na Slovensku a vytvoriť umelecké intervencie do verejného priestoru v spolupráci s kultúrnymi centrami v rôznych mestách na Slovensku.6 Prvý ročník reaguje na dve mestské centrá Banskej Bystrice (historické, chránené UNESCO-m a sídli­ sko Drieňová vybudované počas socializmu).

Novovzniknutý priestor pre kultúru BANSKÁ ST A NICA v priestoroch železničnej stanice, iniciovaný o.z. Štokovec v roku 2008, predstavuje „nové kultúrne centrum“ mesta a stáva sa pre prvý ročník Medzicentra zázemím po dobu 10 dní. Kultúrna vitalizácia urbánnej osi medzi centrami novovytvorenou líniou kopírujúcou hlavnú tepnu (od historického centra, cez kruhový objazd až po železničnú stanicu) poskytla priestor na realizáciu diel, v ktorých autori využili stratégie rôznych médií.7 Diela reagujú na mesto, jeho dávnu i modernú históriu a do procesu svojej tvorby zapojili i obyvateľov.8 Témou druhého ročníka je kultúrna vitalizácia urbánnej osi medzi centrami Žiliny – Stanica Žilina-Záriečie, PGU v Žiline a mestom Žilina.9 Postupne Šošková projekt vyprofiluje na „mikro-rezidenčný festival” venovaný téme “public art” a zapája doň nielen študentov, ale už aj renomovaných umelcov z rôznych krajín. Ďalšie ročníky organizuje opäť v spolupráci s BANSKÁ ST A NICA, následne v spolupráci so SPOTs v Košiciach v rámci EHMK Košice 2013, ďalej v Multimediálnom priestore pre súčasnú kultúru, Nástupište 1-12. V roku 2015 organizuje projekt v Žiline na Stanici Žilina-Záriečie, kde bolo cieľom prepojiť ekologickú tematiku so životom ľudí v panelákoch a priniesť témy ekológie, komunity, charakteru mestského prostredia a kvality života v ňom.10 Projekt vznikol v spolupráci s teoretičkou umenia L. Kukurovou (SK/ DE), nadáciou Greenpeace a umelcami D. Krajčovou (SK) a O. Hudecom (SK).

V kontexte public art festivalu Medzicentrum VI. (2016), ktorý organizovala Šošková v dedinke Dúbravica v spolupráci s Periférne Centrá, bol prizvaný umelec M. Piaček (SK) s dielom MOBILnej sušiarne ovocia, ktorá funguje na platforme prívesného vozíka, ktorý bol od roku 2012 využívaný v projekte Verejný podstavec. Súčasťou projektu bola prechádzka po miestnych odrodách s pomológom, ochutnávka muštov a prezentácia technológií sušenia ovocia.11 Posledný ročník sa uskutočnil v Trebišove v rámci sympózia Intervencie 2017 na tému: Odchod mladých ľudí z okrajových, periférnych oblastí Slovenska do väčších centier alebo za hranice domova.12 Za celé pôsobenie Medzicentra (od roku 2009 - 2017) sa podarilo Šoškovej zorganizovať osem ročníkov, v rámci ktorých sa zúčastnilo a zapojilo do projektu viac než 110 aktívnych umelcov a odborníkov z rôznych krajín. Projekt by nevznikol bez grantovej podpory a zázemia kultúrnych centier na Slovensku, s ktorými Šošková spolupracovala.13

26 1 Pôvodne na tomto mieste, v pamiatkovej zóne mesta Nitra. stála historická budova nitrianskych mlynov, ktorá siaha až do konca 19. storočia, kedy tu vznikol prvý parný mlyn. Svoju funkciu prestali mlyny plniť začiatkom 90. rokov a na tomto mieste vzniklo „obchodno-zábavné centrum Galéria Mlyny”. Železobetónové silo sa považuje za skvost funkcionalistickej priemyselnej architektúry, má steny hrubé 15 centimetrov a výšku vyše 33 metrov.

Nitrania ich považujú za symbol tejto časti mesta. Nechal sa nimi inšpirovať aj staviteľ Starého divadla v Nitre, ktorý využil tento symbol na jeho fasáde. Outdoorgallery_vonkajšia galéria, without stone walls in Nitra and Banská Bystrica The ambition of the project “Outdoor gallery“ – gallery without stone walls – was to create “24/7“ stable and open space, intended for presentation of contemporary visual art in public space in Slovakia. In the autumn of 2009, the sculptor Nina A. Šošková (1983) started this idea together with the artist Daniel Dida (1986). They knew that a platform of this kind was nothing new in the world, but it was missing in Slovakia. The stone pedestal (built by the investor for an undefined purpose), unused until then, was part of the construction of the SC Mlyny Nitra Gallery and posed a challenge for the artists.1 And they managed to get it. The outdoor gallery was located in close proximity to the shopping center, which was dominated by undemanding form of leisure time and behaviour of individuals, subordinated to the consumerist tastes of relaxation and shopping. The pedestal, situated in front of the SC Mlyny Nitra, functioned as a base – a de facto physical space of gallery existence until 2012, which often deliberately transcended the imaginary boundaries of this stone block. The authors reached artists, theorists, experts and together developed the plan and exhibition schedule for 2010.2 In 2011, Šošková founded Outdoor Gallery also in Banská Bystrica. She chooses the place of the former monument of V.I. Lenin, on which, until 1991, stood a 4.5 meters high monumental statue of the world proletariar leader from acad. sculptor Miroslav Ksandr (installed at the turn of the 70s - 80s of the 20th century). The unique location of the removed monument near the city center was also an ideal space for her to present contemporary art, whose ambition was to reflect the historical memory of the place itself, in context of its current potential, as a place for temporary implementation of art intended for public space.

the author is preparing exhibition program for both galleries. An important part consists of accompanying activities, such as professional lectures or discussions on the topic,3 cooperation in both cities with the Nitra Gallery, as well as the Central Slovakian Gallery in Banská Bystrica, with the cultural center KC Záhrada in Banská Bystrica and cooperation with students of art colleges in Slovakia. To the pedestal in Nitra, at the place typical for today and its forms of (non)culture, another base with similarly paradoxical context, referring to the recent past and its residuals in the present was added. “Šošková patiently processed permits at the Municipal Office in Banská Bystrica, so that she could at least sporadically (once a year) implement projects, especially of a sculptural nature in an ideological connection to the historical memory. The space is provided by several artists, whereby they reacted inventively and generally provocatively to the spirit of the place and bizarreness of that previously ostentatious, now empty space, which has no logic or justification to this day.“4 The space, thoughtfully divided by Šošková into several artistic implementations on the original monument, is represented by renowned domestic and foreign artists: M. Rosmány (SK)_Špeka/Špekáč [Bacon/Knackwurst], V. Magid (CZ)_Ukrytá socha [Hidden Statue], J. Kyša (SK)_Červená skalka [Red Rock Garden]. The exhibition plan also includes a project from A.M. Chişa and Lucia Tkáčová in collaboration with the curator M. Keratová and CSG BB (SK). The last artwork, before closing the gallery in BB is by M. Kochan (SK).

of installation “Ukrytá socha“ (Hidden Statue) clearly symbolized the relationship of the nation and the people to the monuments. His work raised questions: Is artwork named Lenin by Ksandrov the type of the monument we had and wanted to preserve or protect?

Are we actually protecting “absence“ of the statue as a gesture against totality as a dictate of the power of one ideology? Magid mainly wanted to draw attention to the hidden or mystified form of the persistence (neo)communist or rather neo-totalitarian practices in politics in Slovakia and Czech Republic, which have fatal impact on contemporary culture.

During the summer (August 1, 2014), a public installation of the sculpture “Chrasta“ (Scab) by Martin Kochan (1981) took place in chamber and casual spirit. Visually, this work is rather inconspicuous for passers-by. It is a circular, expressively treated patinated “griddle cake“.

It is noticeable only to those who climb the stairs and pedestal. With this work, Kochan seems to have healed the wound – an empty concrete place (hole) under the original monumental statue of Lenin.

The work offers several interpretations in terms of meaning, but with regard to the specific place and its unfortunate memory, it points to the unresolving new use or rendering of a given city area for more than 24 years. The work is a relatively radical gesture and at the same time an author´s challenge for his generation to finally deal with the past. There is a strong idea of morbidity and the need to heal or recover from the trauma of the past. Chrasta (Scab) is the promise of a new beginning or a desired dot at the end of one story. In this sense, the work of Martin Kochan is, after the implementation, a kind of completion of the idea – the need to regenerate a society, whose main representation and identification is, after all, its culture.5 The exhibition space of “Outdoor Gallery“ in both cities disappeared more or less due to its missunderstanding from the founders and investors in 2013 (Nitra) and 2015 (Banská Bystrica).

MEDZICENTRUM_art festival for public space (2009-2017) During the period 2009-2018, Šošková´s projects are gradually being formed and thanks to the capitation grant, they are gaining in quality and continuity.

Already during her doctoral studies, Šošková and her colleagues founded workshop “Medzicentrum“, the idea of which is to connect students from art colleges in Slovakia and create artistic interventions in public space in cooperation with cultural centers in various cities in Slovakia.6 The first year responds to two city centers of Banská Bystrica (historical, protected by UNESCO and housing estate Drieňová built during socialism). The newly created space for culture BANSKÁ ST A NICA in the premises of railway station, initiated by civic year of Medzicentrum festival for 10 days. The cultural vitalization of the urban axis between the centers by a newly created line copying the main artery (from the historical center, through the roundabout to the railway station) provided space for the realization of the works, in which the authors used strategies of various media.7 The art works respond to the city, its ancient and modern history and to the process of their creations, the inhabitants were involved as well.8 The theme of the second year is cultural vitalization of the urban axis between the centers of Žilina – Railway station Žilina-Záriečie, PGU in Žilina (The Museum of Art in Žilina) and the city of Žilina.9 Gradually, Šošková’s project is profiled for a “micro-residential festival” dedicated to the theme of “public art” and involves not only students but also renowned artists from various countries. She organizes the next years again in cooperation with BANSKÁ ST A NICA, consequently in cooperation with project SPOTs in Košice within the ECOC Košice 2013, further in Multimedia Space for Contemporary Culture, Platform 1-12. In 2015, project in Žilina at the railway station

Žilina-Záriečie is organized, where the aim was to connect ecological issues with the lives of the people in prefabricated house and bring the topics of ecology, community, the character of the urban environment and the quality of life in it.10 The project was created in collaboration with an art theorist L. Kukurová (SK/ DE), Greenpeace foundation and artists D. Krajčová (SK) and O. Hudec (SK). In the context of the public art festival Medzicentrum VI. (2016), organized by Šošková in village of Dúbravica in cooperation with Periférne Centrá, the artist M. Piaček (SK) was invited with the work MOBILE fruit dryer, which works on the platform of a trailer, which has been used in the Verejný prodstavec project (Public Pedestal) since 2012. The project included a walk through local varieties of fruit with a pomologist, a tasting of ciders and a presentation of fruit drying technologies.11 The last year took place in Trebišov as a part of the Intervencie symposium 2017 on the topic: Emigration of young people from peripheral areas of Slovakia to the larger centers or abroad.12 During the entire activity of Medzicentrum festival (from 2009 to 2017), Šošková managed to organize eight years, in which more than 110 active artists and experts from various countries participated in the project. The project would not have been possible without the capitation grant support and background of cultural centers in Slovakia, with which Šošková cooperated.13

Stala sa riešiteľkou a organizátorkou dlhodobých projektov na slovenskej výtvarnej scéne z oblasti public art. Je zakladateľka o.z. Outdoor gallery a o.z.

Vytvorené na Slovensku a umeleckej značky contemporary_suvenir. Ako výtvarníčka ale aj organizátorka participovala na viacero medzinárodných projektoch najmä k téme public art, napr. Kukačka org. (CZ), ReSite Praha (CZ), OpenAir Plzeň (CZ), Biela Noc (BA, KE), Prisma (PT), Kulturdrogerie Wien (AT) atď. Stála pri vzniku Public Art Contest pre Pohoda Festival.

V rokoch 2015 - 2020 kontinuálne viedla svoj cyklus prednášok a prezentácií na tému „umenie pre verejný priestor” v Dome umenia/Kunsthalle Bratislava.

Je autorka zborníka Forma_zborník textov a reflexií o súčasnom sochárskom umení na Slovensku a riešiteľka niekoľkých katalógov k téme „umenie vo verejnom priestore”. Ilustrovala viacero kníh, napríklad knihu Interpretácie – Slovenská ľudová výšivka, ktorá má pre jej úspech už štvrté vydanie alebo knihu „Generácia hľadajúca zmysel“.

Nakoľko je čerstvá mama (Zoja, 3 roky a Milica, 0+), má v spomínaných projektoch, ktoré považuje za svoje deti a „umelecké diela”, menšiu pauzu. Aktuálne sa venuje rodine a jej novej značke contemporary_suvenir, platforme s cieľom podporiť tvorbu súčasných slovenských suvenírov s umeleckou hodnotou (www.contemporarysuvenir.sk).

Nina A. Šošková was born in 1983 in Žilina. She studied in the studio “Sculpture and Applied Media“ at the Department of Sculpture of Faculty of Fine Arts AA BB and subsequently objected the title artis doctor.

In the period 2011 - 2012, she completed an internship at AVU in Prague (Academy of Fine Arts, CZ) at Studio of Intermedia Work III school of conceptual exploration under the guidance of Mgr. Tomáš Vaněk (CZ) and Prof. Miloš Šejna (CZ). She became the solutionist and administrator of long-term projects on the Slovak art scene in the field of public art. She is the founder of the civic association Outdoor Gallery and civic association Vytvorené na Slovensku (Made in Slovakia) and the art brand contemporary_suvenir. As an artist, but also as an administrator, she participated in several international projects, especially on the topic of public art, e.g. Kukačka org. (CZ), ReSite Praha (CZ), OpenAir Plzeň (CZ), Biela Noc (BA, KE), Prisma (PT), Kulturdrogerie Wien (AT) etc. She was involved in the creation of a Public Art Contest for the Pohoda Festival. In the years 2015 - 2020, she continuously led her cycle of lectures and presentations on the topic “art for public space“ in the House of Arts/Kunsthalle Bratislava. She is the author of the Forma_zborník - collection of texts and reflections about contemporary sculptural art in Slovakia and the solutionist of several catalogs on the topic “art in public space“. She illustrated several books, such as the book Interpretácie – Slovenská ľudová výšivka (Interpretation – Slovak Folk Embroidery), which has its fourth edition for its success or the book Generácia hľadajúca zmysel (Generation seeking sense).

As she is a new mother (of daughters Zoja, 3 years and Milica, 0+ months), she decided to take a short break in the mentioned projects, which she considers her children and “art works“. She is currently dedicated to her family and her new brand contemporary_suvenir, a platform to support the creation of contemporary Slovak souvenirs with its artistic value. Povojnová architektúra a výtvarné umenie vo verejnom priestore, ktoré vzniklo ako neodmysliteľná súčasť každej verejnej investície, nedostala pre rýchlosť doby šancu obstáť skúške času. Stavby druhej polovice 20. storočia si nestihli získať sympatie širokej verejnosti a iba pomaly si priťahujú náklonnosť a pozornosť odborníkov, dizajnérov a pamiatkarov. Ubehlo málo času k ich potrebnému zhodnoteniu a uchopeniu, ich význam, nadčasovosť a estetické kvality sú skryté za stigmu a odpor k predchádzajúcemu režimu, aj keď nemusia spravidla niesť prvky propagandy či formálne znaky socialistického realizmu.

Na výtvarných dielach Trenčína môžeme pozorovať typické znaky z období, kedy diela vznikali.

V 50. rokoch sa objavujú najmä témy znázorňujúce bežný život ľudu a pionierskej mládeže. Do 60. rokov bola zreteľná dominancia socialistického realizmu a propagandy. „Napriek všeobecným tvrdeniam súčasných aj normalizačných médií socialistický realizmus zanikol v podstate už koncom 50. rokov.

Kunsthistoricky býva považovaný za medzník rok 1958, keď sa Československo prezentovalo na výstave Expo v Bruseli už modernou. Potom sa socialistický realizmus objavoval už len sporadicky na vrchole normalizácie iba ako výzdoba straníckych, policajných a vojenských budov“, vysvetľuje Karous. V 60. rokoch vznikali prvé realizácie integrujúce do verejného priestoru aktuálne formy umenia. Nešlo len o zmenu v estetike, o prechod z figurálnych, sentimentálnych a realistických motívov na motívy uvoľnené, experimentálne alebo abstraktné. Išlo aj o integráciu výtvarného umenia do prvkov s ďalším funkčným využitím v priestore. Vznikali tak osvetlenia, prvky mobiliáru, hracie prvky a fontány.

Architekti a pamiatkari nemali dostatok času na odstup od ideových zámerov implementácie výtvarného umenia vo verejnom priestore, nemali prostriedky na ich údržbu a potrebnú revitalizáciu na začlenenie do súčasnej podoby verejného priestoru mesta.

Vrstvy verejného priestoru

Tam, kde odborníci zaostávajú, developeri a noví majitelia verejných stavieb a inštitúcií neváhajú a búrajú, prekrývajú hodnotné prvky, ktoré tvorili integrálnu súčasť architektúry a estetickej podstaty a identity priestorov. Je jednoduchšie zbúrať a postaviť nové objekty, existujúce objekty rýchlo a ekonomicky zatepliť a adaptovať pre potreby 21. storočia ako citlivo rekonštruovať, udržiavať, uvedomovať si autorské práva, architektonické a výtvarné kvality existujúcich prvkov. Verejný priestor patrí všetkým a nikomu, problém post socialistických krajín a celistvosť vo všetkých svojich vrstvách sa stráca umelým odstraňovaním prirodzených vrstiev a pridávaním neodborných rýchlych a lacných riešení. Nevieme určiť, oceniť a zachovávať cenné fragmenty, pretože sú ukryté pod nánosmi z 90. rokov, na druhej strane sa snažíme rýchlo zabudnúť a vymazať všetko, na čo sa viaže trpká minulosť a stigma bývalého režimu.

Mapovaním a pasportizáciou výtvarných diel v meste Trenčín sa snažíme urobiť posun k zamedzeniu miznutia výtvarných diel z verejného priestoru. Tento krok nestačí k ochrane a zachovaniu týchto diel vo všetkých prípadoch, avšak podnecuje k pozitívnej zmene v spoločnosti, k ich čiastočnej údržbe a budúcej rekonštrukcii. Ide o diela významných výtvarníkov, architektov a dizajnérov, ktoré majú vo verejnom priestore svoj význam nie len z estetického a mestotvorného hľadiska, ale taktiež z historického hľadiska.

Trenčín sa v druhej polovici 20. storočia ocitol v procese ambicióznych urbanistických plánov, mohutnej bytovej výstavby a transformácie. Vďaka zákonu: Uznesenie vlády Československej Socialistickej Republiky z dňa 28. júla 1965, č.355, ktoré rieši otázku uplatnenia výtvarného umenia v investičnej výstavbe, sa v Trenčíne zrealizovalo viac ako 100 výtvarných diel.

Zákon uvádzal povinnosť realizácie výtvarného diela v hodnote 0,5 až 4% z celkového rozpočtu stavby.

Trenčín s 15 000 obyvateľmi sa mal prebudovať na 50 000 mesto s ambíciou rastu na rozsiahlu aglo-

meráciu, centrum celého regiónu s výhľadom na 100 000 obyvateľov. Dôležitým bodom v rozvoji mesta bolo pričlenenie priľahlých obcí, medzi ktoré patrili Kubrá, Kubrica, Záblatie, Zlatovce, Istebník, Opatová, Orechové, Biskupice a Zamarovce, do katastrálneho celku mesta. Toto zväčšovanie územia nie je ojedinelým javom v povojnovej výstavbe miest a obcí Československa, nakoľko súviselo s celkovým plánovaným hospodárstvom a reorganizáciou katastrálnych celkov v procese vývoja územnoplánovacieho rozvoja.

Postupne sa budovali sídliská Sihoť II, III a IV, ktoré nadväzovali na funkcionalistický urbanizmus Sihote, Soblahovská, Pred Poľom, Noviny, Nad Tehelňou a rozsiahle sídlisko Juh. Najpočetnejšie množstvo umeleckých diel vo verejnom priestore je koncentrovaných na v tom období vznikajúcich sídliskových komplexoch – teda v rámci urbanistických plánov na sídliskách Soblahovská a Dlhé Hony, Sihoť I. a II. a na sídlisku na Kvetnej ulici, kde boli diela súčasťou prevažne exteriérov bytových domov a ich vnútroblokov. Vďaka tomu vznikali komunitné priestory s detskými ihriskami, lavičkami a zeleňou, dotvorené umeleckým solitérom renomovaného výtvarníka. Ostatné diela sa stali súčasťou verejných stavieb – kultúrnych centier, základných škôl či budov verejnej správy, predovšetkým v podobe mozaiky či reliéfu. Špecifickým prípadom je komplex Pamätníka padlým obetiam na Brezine, ktorý pozostáva z viacero zaujímavých výtvarných diel, a zároveň je hodnotný i ako celkové architektonicko-urbanistické riešenie.

Podobne je tomu tak i v prípade umeleckého dotvorenia trenčianskeho Domu smútku a cintorína, Domu armády a tiež komplexu Detského mestečka, ktoré je už pamiatkovo chránené.

Anonymné priestory sídlisk mala humanizovať implementácia výtvarného diela, fontány, mobiliáru či atypického osvetlenia. Išlo o poľudšťujúci prvok, súčasne orientačný prvok, s vysokou historickou, ale aj umeleckou kvalitou, ktorá nie je exkluzívna, no je dostupná všetkým obyvateľom. Priestory si tak získali nezameniteľnú identitu, orientačný bod a novú vrstvu mestského priestoru.

Architekt Pavol Paňák v kontexte búrania budovy Istropolisu, diela neskorej moderny v Bratislave, konštatuje, že aj vďaka realizáciám, ktoré často nevieme oceniť, vieme mesto čítať vo všetkej jeho vrstevnatosti. „Zbaviť sa takejto vrstvy je ochudobňovanie sa, svojej kultúry a svojej identity. To je vážny zásah. To vrstvenie ľudí vychováva.” Prítomnosť budov a diel z rôznych období sú podstatnou zložkou obrazu mesta a kultúrnej identifikácie s priestorom. Umelo odstrániť pol storočia intenzívnej a rozsiahlej výstavby, všetkých jej súčastí a typických prvkov je popieranie svojej minulosti.

Dôležitým krokom k zachovaniu dôležitých vrstiev mesta a jej prezentácii širokej verejnosti je projekt Európske hlavné mesto kultúry 2026, ktorý pracuje s hmotnými aj nehmotnými podobami kultúrneho dedičstva a hľadá nové spôsoby, ako ich v súčasnosti prezentovať. Zároveň tvorí stratégiu pre implementáciu kvalitného súčasného výtvarného umenia vo verejnom priestore mesta a regiónu, ktoré dokáže nielen zatraktívniť priestor, ale zároveň dokáže reflektovať aktuálne spoločenské témy, rozvíja kritické myslenie a sprostredkuje zložité témy pochopiteľným spôsobom pre širokú verejnosť.

V meste momentálne nie je prítomná nová súčasná vrstva umenia vo verejnom priestore, ktorá tvorí identitu a charakter miest Trenčína, a preto naďalej považujeme za nevyhnutné zachovávať a prezentovať to najkvalitnejšie umenie druhej polovice 20. storočia ako najmladšiu vrstvu diel od renomovaných autorov.

Post-war architecture and fine art in public space, which arose as an inseparable part of every public investment, were not given a chance to stand the test of time due to the speed of time. The buildings of the second half of the 20th century didn‘t have time to gain the sympathy of the general public and only slowly attracted the affection and attention of experts, designers and preservationists. Little time has passed for their necessary evaluation and grasp, their significance, timelessness and aesthetic qualities are hidden behind the stigma and resistance to the previous regime, even though they don‘t usually have to carry the elements of propaganda or formal signs of socialist realism.

In the art works of Trenčín, we can observe typical features from the period when the works were created.

In the 1950s, topics showing the everyday life of the people and pioneering youth in particular appeared.

Until the 1960s, the dominance of socialist realism and propaganda was noticeable. “Despite the general claims of contemporary and normalizing media, socialist realism basically extinguished in the late 1950s. Art-historically, the year 1958 is considered to be a milestone, when Czechoslovakia presented itself at Expo exhibition in Brussels with modernism. After that, socialist realism appeared only sporadically at the climax of normalization only as a decoration of party, police and military buildings“, Karous explains. In the 1960s, the first implementations were created, integrating current art forms into the public space. It was not just a change in aesthetics, a transition from figural, sentimental and realistic motifs to relaxed, experimental or abstract motifs. It was also about the integration of fine art into elements with further functional use in space. The lighting, furniture elements, play elements and fountains were created.

space, they didn‘t have the resources for their maintenance and the necessary revitalization to integrate into the current form of public space of the city.

Where experts lag behind, developers and new owners of public buildings and institutions don´t hesitate and demolish, they overlap the valuable elements that have formed an integral part of architecture and the aesthetic essence and identity of spaces. It‘s easier to demolish and build new objects, quickly and economically insulate existing objects and adapt them to the needs of the 21st century than to sensitively reconstruct, preserve, and be aware of copyrights, architectural and artistic qualities of existing elements. Public space belongs to everyone and no one, the problem of post-socialist countries and the integrity in all its layers is disappearing by the artificial removal of natural layers and by addition of unprofessional, quick and cheap solutions. We cannot identify, appreciate and preserve valuable fragments, because they are hidden under the deposits of the 90s, on the other hand, we try to quickly forget and erase everything that is tied to the bitter past and stigma of the former regime.

By mapping and passportization of art works in the city of Trenčín, we try to make a shift to prevent the disappearance of art works from public space. This step is not enough to protect and preserve these works in all cases, however it encourages positive change in society, their partial maintenance and future reconstruction. These are the works of important artists, architects and designers, which have their significance in public space not only from an aesthetic and urban-creating point of view, but also from a historical point of view.

In the second half of the 20th century, Trenčín found itself in the process of ambitious urban plans, massive housing construction and transformation. Thanks to the law: Resolution of the Government of the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic of 28 July 1965, No. 355, which addresses the issue of the application

of fine arts in investment construction, more than 100 art works were created in Trenčín. The law stated the obligation to art works realization in the amount of 0.5 to 4% of the total construction budget.

Trenčín with its 15,000 inhabitants was to be rebuilt into a 50,000 city with the ambition of growth into a large agglomeration, the center of the whole region with a view of 100,000 inhabitants. An important point in the city development was the affiliation of the adjacent villages, which included Kubrá, Kubrica, Záblatie, Zlatovce, Istebník, Opatová, Orechové, Biskupice and Zamarovce, into the cadastral unit of the city. This enlargement of the territory is not a unique phenomenon in the post-war construction of towns and villa­ ges in Czechoslovakia, as it was related to the overall planned economy and the reorganization of cadastral units in the process of evolution of spatial planning development. Gradually, the housing estates Sihoť II, III and IV were built, which followed the functionalist urbanism of Sihoť, Soblahovská, Pred Poľom, Noviny, Nad Tehelňou and the extensive housing estate Juh. The largest number of art works in the public space is concentrated in the housing estates, that were emerging in that period - ie within the urban plans in the housing estates Soblahovská and Dlhé Hony, Sihoť I. and II. and in the housing estate on Kvetná Street, where the works were part of mainly the exteriors of apartment buildings and their courtyards.

Thanks to this, community spaces with playgrounds, benches and greenery were created, completed by the artistic solitaire of a renowned artist. Other works have become part of public buildings - cultural centers, primary schools or public administration buildings, especially in the form of mosaics or relief.

A specific case is the complex of the Memorial to the Fallen Victims in Brezina, which consists of several interesting art works, and at the same time is valuable as an overall architectural and urban design solution.

The same is true in the case of the artistic completion of the Trenčín House of Mourning and the Cemetery, the House of Army and also the Children‘s Town complex, which is already listed.

The anonymous spaces of the housing estates were to be humanized by the implementation of an art work, a fountain, furniture or atypical lighting. It was a humanizing element, at the same time an orienting element, with a high historical but also artistic quality, which isn‘t exclusive, but is accessible to all inhabitants. The spaces thus gained an unmistakable identity, a reference point and a new layer of urban space.

In the context of the demolition of the Istropolis building, a work of late modernism in Bratislava, architect Pavol Paňák states that even thanks to implementations that we often cannot appreciate, we can read the city in all its stratification. “Getting rid of such

a layer is impoverishment of oneself, one‘s culture and one‘s identity. This is a serious hit. This stratification educates people.“ The presence of buildings and works from different periods are an essential component of the city image and cultural identification with space. To artificially remove half a century of intensive and extensive construction, all its components and typical elements is a denial of its past.

An important step in preserving the important layers of the city and presenting it to the general public is the European Capital of Culture 2026 project, which works with tangible and intangible forms of cultural heritage and seeks new ways to present them today.

At the same time, it creates a strategy for the implementation of quality contemporary art in the public space of the city and region, which can not only make the space more attractive, but also reflect current social issues, develop critical thinking and conveys complex topics in an understandable way to the general public.

There is currently no new contemporary layer of art in the public space, which forms the identity and character of the places in Trenčín, and therefore we still consider it necessary to preserve and present the best art of the second half of the 20th century as the youngest layer of works by renowned authors.

Alexander Topilin vyštudoval architektúru na STU v Bratislave. Aktuálne je členom kolektívu Projekt Hlava 5, ktorý vznikol ako reakcia na súčasný stav výtvarného umenia vo verejnom priestore, ale časom prerástol do plnohodnotného projektu, ktorý sa venuje výstavníctvu, publikovaniu, realizáciám vo verejnom priestore, propagácii samotnej témy vzťahu výtvarného umenia, verejného priestoru a architektúry. Hlavným cieľom projektu je vzbudiť záujem obyvateľov o svoje okolie a o kvalitné výtvarné umenie 20. storočia, ktoré nám často bez povšimnutia mizne z nášho verejného priestoru. Alexander Topilin je v súčasnosti súčasťou tímu Európske hlavné mesto kultúry Trenčín 2026 a podieľa sa na tvorbe kultúrneho a umeleckého obsahu. Taktiež sa venuje spoluorganizácii mestského festivalu Priestor, architektonickej tvorbe a ilustrácii.

Alexander Topilin studied architecture at Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava. He is currently a member of the Catch 5 collective, which was created as a reaction to the current state of fine arts in public space, but over time has grown into a full-featured project dedicated to exhibitions, publishing, implementation in public spaces, promoting the very theme of the relationship between fine arts, public space and architecture. The main goal of the project is to arouse the interest of the inhabitants in their surroundings and in the quality fine art of the 20th century, which often disappears from our public space without being noticed. Alexander Topilin is currently part of the European Capital of Culture Trenčín 2026 team and participates in the creation of cultural and artistic content. He also focuses on co-organizing the city festival Priestor, architectural creation and illustration.

Otázka po významu umění ve veřejném prostoru pro nás má až paradoxně široké rozpětí. S nahlížením na něj máme spojenou celou řadu osobních hodnot a postojů, současně cítíme, že hovor o něm má bytostně společenský rozměr.

Právě společenskému rozměru umění ve veřejném prostoru jsme se rozhodly věnovat v tomto příspěvku.

Dlouhodobá zkušenost z galerijní pedagogiky, v níž jsme profesně ukotveny, nás vede k pojímání děl ve veřejném prostoru jako objektů vybízejících k interpretaci z mnoha perspektiv (kontext umělecko-historický, společenský, geografický i čistě subjektivní…), a také jako námětů k rozhovoru a sdílení hodnot či postojů napříč generacemi nebo jako impulsů k další tvůrčí činnosti či reakci.

Cílem našich aktivit je proto vzbudit u dětí i dospělých zájem o umění ve veřejném prostoru a tedy i zájem o věci, jež byly možná dosud ve stínu jejich pozornosti. Společně objevujeme, že město nebo obec, ve kterém žijeme, může být jako otevřená kniha, ve které se všichni učíme číst. Sledujeme, jak je historie vepsána do konkrétních míst i objektů, jak se v nich odráží vztah k celospolečenským hodnotám v čase. Pokud bychom město či obec přirovnaly k živému organismu, pak mohou sochy či pomníky tvořit něco jako nervovou soustavu, reprezentovat její důležité uzlové body.

Jen je třeba prověřit, zda jsou tyto body stále živé, zda jsou propojené se zbytkem „soustavy” a jaké další vazby či naopak možnosti nových spojení můžeme objevit.

Co dělá umění s městem a co s člověkem?

jednou z nejzajímavějších cest, kterou se ve vzdělávání můžeme vydat, je vést dialog o umění, který přirozeně podněcuje každého k jiným otázkám.

V knize o umění ve veřejném prostoru pro rodiny, jíž jsme autorkami (Ahoj socho, GHMP, 2018), nabízíme čtenářům proto otázky, a to tak, aby vedly od jednodušších úvah ke složitějšímu přemýšlení i vlastnímu tázání. Kromě základních otázek kdo, kdy a proč dílo vytvořil, se například ptáme: - Co vše ovlivňuje, zda k soše chodíme nebo nechodíme rádi?

- Rozumíte tomu, co socha představuje?

Je pro vás zajímavé to, jak socha vypadá, z jakého je materiálu?

- Víte, proč je socha umístěna právě tady?

- A má nějaký smysl, že je umístěna právě tady?

- Jak můžete sochu používat? Jak u ní můžete trávit čas?

- A ptáme se také na klíčové: K jakým otázkám vás dílo podněcuje?

V praxi si ověřujeme, že tyto základní otázky generují další a komplexnější úvahy, které se již nevztahují ke konkrétnímu uměleckému dílu, ale postihují kontexty a kvality umění ve veřejném prostoru obecně. A vyjasňování si subjektivních názorů a odpovědí na ně pak považujeme za klíčovou součást vzdělávání o umění ve veřejném prostoru. Nejde až tak o to, aby byly otázky vyneseny do diskuse při každé akci či aktivitě, ale o to, aby čas od času našly svoje místo v diskusi účastníků různých workshopů, v rámci výtvarné a občanské výchovy nebo dějepisu na školách, měly svůj prostor v debatách spolků pečujících o veřejných prostor nebo na úrovni lokální a státní správy.

Otázek, které se v takovýchto diskusích rodí, je mnoho a zkoumají umění ve veřejném prostoru z různých perspektiv: - Jaký vliv na náš život může mít to, zda chodíme kolem míst, která vznikla jako čistě účelná, nebo zda den-

ně míjíme místa či objekty, které mají i jinou úlohu např. povznášet nebo prezentovat kulturní hodnoty?

- Proměňuje náš vztah k veřejnému prostoru skutečnost, že místo vytvořené kdysi s velkou péčí a prezentující důležitou hodnotu, událost nebo osobnost, je dnes zanedbané a mimo zájem obyvatel?

Může dílo upozornit na ztracené - dřívější - kvality veřejného prostoru?

- Reprezentují umělecká díla ve veřejném prostoru sdílené hodnoty společnosti nebo jen vypovídají o jednom, nad jiné převažujícím názoru, který se prosadil třeba mocenskou cestou?

- Jaká je a jaká má být role umělce - autora díla při umísťování díla do veřejného prostoru?

Jak si poradit s veřejným prostorem budovaným komerčními subjekty a osazeným třeba i kvalitními sochami? Záleží nebo nezáleží na tom, komu dílo ve veřejném prostoru patří a zda je vůbec prostor kolem díla veřejný nebo jen „veřejně přístupný”? A má smysl se na to ptát?

- Dá se veřejný prostor kriticky „číst” podobně jako denní tisk a ověřovat si vlastnické struktury a mocenské zájmy dotýkající se jednotlivých děl?

Jak přistupovat k dílům, která bychom o objektivitu se pokoušejícími kritérii označili jako nekvalitní, k nimž má ovšem silný pozitivní vztah místní komunita? Mají své místo ve veřejném prostoru nebo ne?

- Mnohdy dílo posiluje kvalitu veřejného prostoru, může mu ale i „ubližovat”. Jak takové případy řešit?

- Co je pro město a jeho trvale udržitelný rozvoj vhodnější - citlivé osazení malého množství uměleckých děl „na stálo” nebo spíše ohledávání prostoru města dočasnými intervencemi?

- Může umělecké dílo „léčit“ místa vyloučená, místa zdevastovaná nebo místa procházející změnou užívání?

- Zaslouží si každé dílo ve veřejném prostoru péči a ochranu? A kdo určí, zda ano, nebo ne?

Dodnes na většinu otázek odpověď samy hledáme a zjišťujeme, že každé dílo, ať už je součástí vesnice, města nebo krajiny, zpřítomňuje v diskuzi jiné z těchto otázek a k formulování mnoha dalších podněcuje. Právě v pojímání uměleckého díla jako impulsu ke kritickému hovoru a pobídky ke zkoumání kvalit a významu samotného veřejného prostoru a proměn společenských hodnot, vidíme jeho další, přidanou hodnotu.

Vzdělávání o umění ve veřejném prostoru může stavět na dialogu jako na základní metodě, chtěly bychom ale také vyzdvihnout, že se k podobným tématům můžeme vztáhnout i skrze tvůrčí aktivity - výtvarné, dramatické nebo například skrze současný tanec. Tvůrčí akt může vést intuitivně k pochopení celé řady témat, je přístupný všem generacím a umožňuje vést dialog beze slov, bez složitých pojmů. Do veřejného prostoru

můžeme aktivně vstoupit například komentáři psanými či kreslenými křídou na chodník, krátkodobými instalacemi z oblečení účastníků, tvorbou sochy z vlastních těl nebo miniaturními ozvláštněními vytvořenými z kostek cukru či jiných pomíjivých materiálů.

Takové a další podněty jsme zahrnuly např. do návrhu Projektového dne Ahoj socho, který jsme připravily pro Galerii hlavního města Prahy a který je dostupný na jejich webových stránkách.

Naše zkušenosti jsou takové, že jakmile lidé dostanou informace a jejich městskému prostředí někdo věnuje svůj zájem a pozornost, cítí se potěšeni a začnou téma často sami rozvíjet, nabalovat další své tipy na zajímavá místa a také vlastní otázky. Setkáváme se s reakcemi: „…no vidíte, já kolem toho chodila dvacet let, a nikdy mě nenapadlo zjišťovat, co to vlastně je. Teď vidím, že je to zajímavý a vlastně i docela pěkný.” Tímto výrokem se zpětně dostáváme na začátek této úvahy: věříme, že místa, kterými chodíme, nejsou anonymní. A čím více o nich víme, tím hlouběji můžeme chápat, kým vlastně jsme, jaké máme hodnoty my sami, jaké hodnoty jsou společné nám všem a o kterých se přeme…

The question of the importance of art in public space has a paradoxically wide range for us. Looking at it, we see a number of personal values and attitudes connected, at the same time we feel that the conversation about it has an essentially social dimension.

We decided to focus on the social dimension of art in public space in this article. Long-term experience in gallery pedagogy, in which we are professionally anchored, leads us to the perception of works in public space as objects encouraging interpretation from many perspectives (artistic-historical, social, geographical and purely subjective context...), as well as topics for conversation and sharing values or attitudes across generations or as impulses for further creative activity or reaction.

The aim of our activities is therefore to arouse an interest in art in public space in children and adults and thus an interest in things that may have been in the shadows of their attention so far. Together we discover that the city or village in which we live can be like an open book in which we all learn to read. We observe how history is inscribed in specific places and objects, how they reflect the relationship to wide-society values over time.

If we compare a city or village to a living organism, then statues or monuments can form something like a ner­ vous system, representing its important nodal points.

It is only necessary to verify whether these points are still alive, whether they are connected to the rest of the “system“ and what other connections or, on the contrary, the possibilities of new connections we can discover.

take in education is to have a dialogue about art that naturally encourages everyone to different issues.

In the book about art in public space for the family of which we are the authors (Ahoj socho, GHMP, 2018), we therefore offer readers questions, so that they lead from simpler thinking to more complex thinking and self-questioning. In addition to the basic questions of who, when and why the work was created, we ask, for example: - What influences whether we like to go to the statue or not?

- Do you understand what the statue represents?

- Are you interested in what the statue looks like, what material it is made of?

- Do you know why the statue is placed right here?

- And does it make sense that it´s located right here?

- How can you use the statue? How can you spend time with it?

- And we also ask key questions: What questions does the work raise in you?

In practice, we verify that these basic questions generate additional and more complex considerations that no longer relate to a specific artwork, but affect the contexts and qualities of art in public space in general. And then we consider the clarification of subjective opinions and answers to them to be a key part of education about art in public space. It is not so much of asking a questions for discussion at every event or activity, but, from time to time, of finding a place in the discussion of participants in various workshops, from art and civic education or in history in school, to have their time in the debates of associations caring for public spaces or at the level of local and state administration.

There are many questions that arise in such discussions and they examine art in public space from different perspectives: - What impact can we have on our lives if we

walk around places that were created as purely purposeful, or whether we daily pass places or objects that have a different role - for example, to elevate or present cultural values?

- Does our relationship with public space change the fact that a place once created with great care and presenting an important value, event or personality is now neglected and out of the interest of the inhabitants?

- Can the work draw attention to the lost former - qualities of public space?

- Do artworks in public space represent shared values of society, or do they merely express one prevailing opinion over another, which has succeeded, for example, by a power path?

- What is and what should be the role of the artist - the author of the work - in placing the work in public space?

- How to deal with a public space built by commercial entities and equipped with, for example, quality sculptures?

- Does it matter or not to whom the work in the public space belongs and whether the space around the work is public at all or just “publicly accessible“? And does it make sense to ask?

- Is it possible to critically “read“ public space similarly to the daily press and to verify ownership structures and power interests concerning individual works?

- How to approach works that we would describe as low quality in terms of objective criteria, to which, however, the local community has a strong positive relationship? Do they have their place in public space or not?

- Often the work strengthens the quality of public space, but it can also “hurt“ it. How to deal with such cases?

- What is more suitable for the city and its sustainable development - the sensitive installation of a small number of artworks “permanently“ or rather the guard of the city space by temporary interventions?

- Can an artwork “heal“ places that are excluded, devastated or places undergoing a change of use?

- Does every work in public space deserve care and protection? And who will determine whether or not?

To this day, we search for the answer to most of the questions ourselves and find that each work, whether it‘s part of a village, town or landscape, presents other of these questions in the discussion and encourages the formulation of many others. It‘s in the conception of an artwork as an impulse to critical conversation and an incentive to explore the qualities and significance of public space itself and changes in social values, we see its further, added value.

Education about art in public space can build on dialogue as a basic method, but we would also like

to emphasize that we can relate to similar topics through creative activities – artistic, dramatic or, for example, through contemporary dance. A creative act can intuitively lead to an understanding of a wide range of topics, is accessible to all generations and allows for dialogue without words, without complex concepts. We can actively enter the public space, for example, with comments written or drawn in chalk on the sidewalk, short-term installations from participants´ clothing, the creation of sculptures from their own bodies or miniature specialties created from sugar cubes or other transient materials. We have included such and other suggestions, for example, in the design of the Projektový den Ahoj Socho (Ahoj Socho Project Day), which we have prepared for the Prague City Gallery and which is available on its website.

Our experience is that as soon as people get the information and someone pays interest and attention to their urban environment, they feel pleased and often start developing the topic themselves, adding more tips for interesting places as well as their own questions. We come across reactions: “...you see, I‘ve been walking around for twenty years, and it never occurred to me to find out what it was. Now I see that it‘s interesting and actually quite nice.“ With this statement, we get back to the beginning of this reflection: we believe that the places we go to are not anonymous. And the more we know about them, the deeper we can understand who we really are, what values we have ourselves, what values are common to all of us and which we argue about…

Lucie Štůlová Vobořilová vystudovala dějiny umění a věnuje se zprostředkování umění. Pracuje jako galerijní edukátorka a tématu umění ve veřejném prostoru se věnuje také jako kurátorka. Absolvovala stáže v zahraničních institucích, např. IMMA v Dublinu či ZKM v Karlsruhe, spolupracuje s organizacemi jako je například KRUH, z.s., GHMP a další. Od roku 2002 do roku 2020 pracovala jako kurátorka pro vzdělávání v Národní galerii Praha, nyní se podílí na kulturním oživení horského regionu Jesenicka. Spolu s Michaelou Matysovou je spoluautorkou knihy Ahoj socho, kterou vydala Galerie hl. m. Praha v roce 2018. Michaela Matysová studovala učitelství češtiny, literatury a výtvarné výchovy, spolupracuje s řadou kulturních organizací při zprostředkování umění (NGP, GHMP, Zámek Žďár nad Sázavou, Máš umělecké střevo?..).

Od roku 2008 do roku 2014 pracovala v NGP jako kurátorka pro vzdělávání se zaměřením na programy pro školy a výtvarné dílny pro veřejnost propojující např. výtvarné umění a tanec a také na spolupráci s PedF UK. V současné době učí též na základní škole.

Michaela a Lucie společně formují nezávislou iniciativu Ahoj socho věnující se veřejnému prostoru, umění a vzdělávání mladých lidí, dětí i dospělých. Iniciativa si klade za cíl přinášet podněty k práci s uměním ve veřejném prostoru různorodými formami (workshopy v rámci formálního i neformálního vzdělávání, samoobslužné materiály pro procházku městem - např. stezka Objevuj sochy na Praze 10 atd.).

Lucie Štůlová Vobořilová studied art history and is dedicated to art mediation. She works as a gallery educator and she also deals with the topic of art in public space as a curator. She completed internship in foreign institutions, such as IMMA in Dublin or ZKM in Karlsruhe, she cooperates with organizations such as civic association KRUH, Prague City Gallery and others. From 2002 to 2020, she worked as a curator for education at the National Gallery in Prague, and now participates in the cultural revitalization of the Jesenicka mountain region.

She is the co-author of the book Ahoj Socho, together with Michaela Matysová, published by National Gallery in Prague in 2018. Michaela Matysová studied teaching Czech, literature and art education, and collaborates with a number of cultural organizations in the mediation of art (NGP, PCG, Žďár nad Sázavou Chateau, Máš umělecké střevo? ..). Klára Brůhová a Michal Frýželka* V roce 1962 vyšla publikace Za Prahu krásnější, která referuje o stejnojmenné iniciativě postavené na fenoménu tzv. „Akcí Z“, totiž – jak brožura sama vysvětluje – iniciativních brigádnických hnutí pražských občanů za zvelebení města.1 Mezi nejčastěji zmiňované „zvelebující“ iniciativy menšího rozsahu patřila především dětská hřiště a různé herní prvky pro děti, coby realizace potřebné a ve veřejném prostoru žádoucí, a zároveň propagačně nadmíru vděčné. V Praze krásnější se to jen hemží snímky radostných dětí skotačících na nových prolézačkách a pískovištích. Většina hřišť, o nichž je řeč, sice nepůsobí nijak pozoruhodně (většinou jde o ohrádku s pískem a pár houpaček), teze o klíčové spolupráci s výtvarníky, jejichž účast „zvyšuje estetickou hodnotu výzdoby města“2, však dává tušit, že se najdou i výjimky.

Jednu z nich – sochařsky utvářenou herní plastiku moorovských tvarů – najdeme například na stránkách časopisu Květy [obr. 1]3. I Květy odkazují na akci Za Prahu krásnější a líčí, že do brigádnických akcí se zapojila Vysoká škola uměleckoprůmyslová, která pomohla navrhnout a roku 1960 i zrealizovat prolézačku pro dětské hřiště ve svém těsném sousedství – na pražském Alšově nábřeží. Květy dále prozrazují, že autorkou atypického (dnes však již bohužel zaniklého) díla je Eleonora Haragsimová ze speciálního ateliéru užitého sochařství profesora Jana Kavana.4 Text vyzdvihuje jak aspekt funkční, tak estetickou stránku amorfně utvářeného objektu plného oblin, proláklin a otvorů, díky níž obstojí jako výtvarné dílo. Jak konstatoval sochař Vladimír Kýn: „Není jedno, jaká prolézačka je (…). Udělat prolézačku pro děti je otázka (…) znalosti dětské duše, otázka fantazie a tvůrčí invence.“5 Fascinujícím úkolem spočívajícím v návrzích imaginativních objektů pro dětská hřiště, pro která se vžilo označení funkční plastiky, se ve své době zabývala celá řada dalších umělců, z nichž mnozí měli, stejně jako Eleonora Haragsimová, úzkou vazbu na Vysokou školu uměleckoprůmyslovou a rovněž velmi podobný „ruko-

pis“ organického tvarování. Připomenout lze například Evu Kmentovou 6 a Olbrama Zoubka,7 Miroslava Jiravu,8 Jiřího Lendra9 nebo Štěpána Kotrbu10 a Marii Kotrbovou-Procházkovou.11 u jednoho návrhu nakonec nezůstala ani Eleonora Haragsimová,12 která v polovině šedesátých let vytvořila hned tři různá díla pro nově vznikající experimentální sídliště Invalidovna: dvojici „Slepička a kuřátko“13 pro zahradu mateřské školky (částečně zachováno a zrestaurováno) a samostatně stojící skluzavku přiléhavě přezdívanou „kyčelní kloub mamuta“14 [obr. 4] (zachováno).15 S pohledem na jména autorů a autorek těchto amorfně utvářených plastik podněcujících nejen touhu objekty ztéci, ale také roztáčejících obrátky dětské fantazie, detekujeme jistou společnou charakteristiku. Většina tvůrců totiž měla vazbu nejen na pražskou VŠUP, ale přímo na konkrétní ateliér, jímž bylo studio sochaře Jana Kavana.16 Za zdánlivou shodou okolností však stojí vysvětlení spočívající ve skutečnosti, že ve školním ateliéru Jana Kavana bylo řešení funkčních plastik (snad dokonce opakovaně) zadáváno jako téma semestrálních prací.17 Studenti i absolventi tedy tento fenomén velmi dobře znali. Nepodařilo se bohužel dohledat přesné časové ukotvení těchto školních úkolů, lze se však domnívat, že šlo o konec padesátých let či raná léta šedesátá.

Další střípky do mozaiky přidávají informace od syna manželů Kotrbových, kteří ve druhé polovině padesátých let u Kavana studovali a následně v jeho ateliéru na VŠUP působili v rámci tzv. „postabsolvenstkého“ stipendia.18 Štěpán Kotrba mladší poskytl kromě vyprávění o tvůrčích začátcích svých rodičů také materiály z rodinného archivu, mezi nimiž upoutají především studie dvou funkčních plastik v měřítku 1:10, které vznikly právě na základě Kavanova zadání a byly zamýšleny jako herní prvky pro dětská hřiště [obr. 5].19 Modely svou formou odkazují na další realizaci z šedesátých let, u níž bylo až dosud autorství nejasné. Jde o plasticky utvářenou skluzavku v ulici Beníškové

v Praze-Košířích [obr. 6]. Byť ani nyní zřejmě nelze autorství přiřadit přímo manželům Kotrbovým, zdá se dost dobře možné, že za projektem stál právě někdo z okruhu Kavanova ateliéru. Proces ateliérové práce zřejmě fungoval tak, že jednotliví studenti během semestru navrhovali své vize – bez návaznosti na konkrétní lokalitu, kde by dílo mohlo stát. Případná realizace a umístění se většinou řešila až následně – s ohledem na aktuální možnosti a poptávku.20 Spolu s košířskou skluzavkou se vracíme také ke zmiňovaným „Akcím Z“. Je pravděpodobné, že ateliér Jana Kavana navázal jistou formu spolupráce právě s brigádnickými iniciativami zvelebování Prahy (což ostatně dokládá i realizace díla Eleonory Haragsimové na Alšově nábřeží) a studenti a studentky se přímo podíleli jak autorskými návrhy herních prvků, tak dílčí pomocí při samotné realizaci.21 V případě plastiky v ulici Beníškové šlo o kooperaci s jedním z pražských bytových družstev, které si na košířském staveništi Na Vidoulích začalo v roce 1959 svépomocí stavět bytové domy následované dalšími objekty, jako byla například mateřská školka.21 Právě v souvislosti s touto výstavbou byla ve zvelebovaném veřejném prostoru mezi obytnými domy umístěna i herní plastika.23 Sochařsky utvářené prolézačky měly formálně daleko blíže k nespoutaným přírodním útvarům, skalním proláklinám a převisům než ke schváleným standardizovaným herním prvkům typizovaných dětských hřišť.

Právě proto slavily u dětí takový úspěch a staly se do značné míry fenoménem. Tatáž vlastnost však přinesla i jednu z nejzávažnějších výtek vůči jejich uplatnění, totiž otázku bezpečnosti, které plastiky nemohly dost dobře vyhovět. Herní prvky tak postupem doby začaly mizet, případně se – dosti paradoxně – proměňovat v objekty přístupné „jen na vlastní nebezpečí“.24 Poetická podstata a nevázanost organicky tvarovaných prvků tedy přinesla i určitá úskalí – a i když se změnou charakteru funkčních plastik nemusíme souhlasit, argument jejich bezpečnosti zcela zanedbat také nelze. Restaurátorské aktivity, byť zakončené umístěním tabulky „na vlastní nebezpečí“, ostatně v kontextu celkové situace autorských herních prvků, obecně patří mezi ty chvályhodnější počiny. Řada jiných funkčních plastik se totiž renovace vůbec nedočkala a během let byla nenávratně zdevastována či odstraněna. Vypadá to téměř, jako by společnost zapomněla, že jde o umělecké objekty, které vznikly pod rukama významných výtvarníků a výtvarnic, a které si zaslouží stejně citlivý přístup a adekvátní ochranu jako jakákoliv jiná výtvarná díla. Pokud se tedy bavíme o péči o umění ve veřejném prostoru, je na místě zdůraznit, že jednou z neopominutelných kategorií jsou i herní prvky a funkční plastiky, které se bohužel svým postupným chátráním a demolicemi staly téměř vyhynulým druhem.

Kmentová a Zoubek se v roce 1960 účastnili jubilejní „velké celostátní umělecké soutěže“ a do kategorie „funkčních plastik pro dětská hřiště“ zaslali hned dva organicky tvarované návrhy. Jednoho dne přijelo několik mužských s jakýmsi náčrtem. Prý nám postaví umělecké dílo, skluzavku pro naše děti. Přivezli cosi mohutného a další potřebné věci. Složili vše nedaleko jednoho z našich domů a pustili se do dokončovacích prací podle pokynů sochaře. Mladé rodiny mívají malé děti a ty milují klouzačky, skluzavky a podobné věci. Tak jsme se na tuhle skluzavku docela těšili. Vyrostla pěkně do výšky, tvarově byla – no, exkluzivní.

Po jejím povrchu se rozléval hrubý beton. My, matky dětí, nadšených z téhle velké hračky, jsme se neradovaly, protože nejeden z potomků si po sjezdu po skluzavce rozedřel kalhoty.

Horší byla ale jiná věc. Pokud by dítě spadlo z vrcholu klouzačky, dopadlo by na její betonovou základnu ze slušné výšky. Proto jsme dovolili dětem prolézat jen spodním průlezem tohoto díla, to bylo bezpečné. Po mnoha, mnoha letech se nám naše dospělé děti svěřily, že přes všecky zákazy na klouzačku tajně lezly. Bohudík, nic se jim nestalo. Za téměř šedesát let jsme si na tu příšerku zvykli a mnohé z nás ‚stavebníků‘ přežila.“ In: Rukopis vzpomínek pamětnice – p. Svérázný popis dává kromě zrodu díla nahlédnout také na jeho další život – především tím, že tematizuje způsob následného využití funkční plastiky, který, jak se ukázalo, nebyl úplně bez problémů. Markantní je především rozpor mezi „dospěláckou“ představou o bezpečnosti prvku a dětským světem, jehož imaginaci a touze po dobrodružství odpovídá spíše odvážnější a méně regulované prostředí.

Klára Brůhová and Michal Frýželka* In 1962, the publication Za Prahu krásnější (For More Beautiful Prague) was published, which reported on the initiative of the same name based on the phenomenon of the so-called “Initiatives Z’’ (Akcí Z), namely - as the brochure itself explains - initiative brigade movements of Prague citizens to improve the city.1 Among the most frequently mentioned “exaggerating” initiatives on a smaller scale were mainly playgrounds and various play elements for children, as implementation necessary and desirable in public space, and at the same time extremely grateful for promotion. In the publication Za Prahu krásnější, it is just full of pictures of joyful children roaming on new climbing frames and sandpits. Although most of the playgrounds in question do not look remarkable (it’s mostly a sand pit and a few swings), the thesis of key collaboration with artists, whose participation “increases the aesthetic value of the city’s decoration”2, suggests that there are also exceptions.

One of the exceptions - sculpturally formed play sculpture of Moore shapes - can be found, for example, on the pages of the magazine Květy (Flowers) [fig.

1].3 Květy also refers to the event Za Prahu krásnější and describes that the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design, which helped design and implement a climbing frame for a children’s playground in its immediate vicinity - on Alšovo Riverside in Prague took part in brigade events. Květy also reveals that the author of the atypical (but unfortunately now extinct) work is Eleonora Haragsimová from the special studio of applied sculpture of Professor Jan Kavan.4 The text highlights both the functional aspect and the aesthetic aspect of an amorphously shaped object full of curves, depressions and openings, thanks to which it stands as a work of art. As the sculptor Vladimír Kýn stated: “It matters what the climbing frame looks like (…). Making a climbing frame for children is a matter of (…) knowledge of the child’s soul, a matter of imagination and creative invention.”5

Play sculptures for more beautiful Prague

The fascinating task of designing imaginative objects for playgrounds, known as functional sculptures, was dealt with by a number of other artists at the time.

Many of them, like Eleonora Haragsimová, had a close connection to the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design and also very similar “manuscript”of organic shaping. We can mention, for example, Eva Kmentová6 and Olbram Zoubek7, Miroslav Jirava8, Jiří Lendr9 or Štěpán Kotrba10 and Maria Kotrbová-Procházková11. In the end, Eleonora Haragsimová12 was not left with one design, who in the mid-1960s created three different works for the newly emerging experimental housing estate Invalidovna: a pair of “Slepička a kuřátko“ (Hen and chicken)13 for the garden of kindergarten (partially preserved and restored) and a free-standing slide aptly nicknamed “kyčelní kloub mamuta“ (Mammoth hip joint)14 [fig. 4] (retained).15 Looking at the names of the authors of these amorphously shaped sculptures that stimulate not only the desire for objects to flow, but also the spinning turns of children’s imagination, we detect a certain common characteristic. Most of the creators were connected not only with the Prague Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design, but directly with a specific studio, which was the studio of the sculptor Jan Kavan.16 However, behind the seeming coincidence of circumstances, there is an explanation based on the fact that in Jan Kavan’s school studio, the solution of functional sculptures was (perhaps even repeatedly) assigned as the topic of semester works.17 Students and graduates therefore knew this phenomenon very well. Unfortunately, it was not possible to find the exact time anchoring of these school assignments, but it can be assumed that it was the end of the fifties or the early sixties.

of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague as part of a so-called “post-graduate” scholarship.18 In addition to telling about his parents’ creative beginnings, Štěpán Kotrba Jr. also provided materials from the family archive, including studies of two functional sculptures in a 1:10 scale, which were created on the basis of Kavan’s assignments and were intended as play elements for playgrounds [fig. 5].19 In their form, the models refer to another implementation from the 1960s, for which the authorship has been unclear until now. It is a plastically formed slide in Beníškové Street in Prague-Košíře [fig. 6]. Although even now the authorship can probably not be assigned directly to the Kotrba couple, it seems quite possible that someone from the circle of Kavan’s studio was behind the project. The process of studio work probably worked in such a way that individual students designed their visions during the semester - without reference to a specific location where the work could stand.

Possible implementation and location was usually solved only subsequently - with regard to current possibilities and demand.20 Along with the slide in Košíře, we also return to the aforementioned “Initiatives Z”. It is probable that Jan Kavan’s studio established a certain form of cooperation with brigade initiatives to improve Prague (which is also evidenced by the implementation of Eleonora Haragsimová’s work on Alšovo Riverside) and students directly participated in both authorial designs of play elements and partial assistance in the actual implementation.21 In the case of the sculpture in Beníškové Street, it was a cooperation with one of the Prague housing cooperatives, which in 1959 began to build apartment buildings on their own at the Na Vidoulích construction site, followed by other buildings, such as a kindergarten.22 It was in connection with this construction that a play sculpture was placed in the improved public space between the residential houses.23

The sculpturally shaped climbing frames were formally much closer to the unrestrained natural formations, rock depressions and overhangs than to the approved standardized play elements of standardized playgrounds. That is why they celebrated such success with children and became largely a phenomenon.

However, the same characteristic brought one of the most serious criticisms of their application, namely the question of safety, which the sculptures could not meet well enough. Play elements thus began to disappear over time, or - quite paradoxically - to shift into objects accessible “only at your own risk”.24 The poetic nature and self-indulgence of organically shaped elements therefore brought certain pitfalls and although we don’t have to agree with the change in the character of functional sculptures, the argument of their safety cannot be completely neglected either. Restoration activities, although ending with the placement of the sign “at your own risk”, in the context of the overall situation of the author’s play elements, are generally among the most praiseworthy deeds.

Many other functional sculptures have not been renovated at all and have been irreversibly devastated or removed over the years. It almost seems as if the company has forgotten that these are works of art created by hands of prominent artists and which deserve the same sensitive approach and adequate protection as any other artwork. Therefore, if we are talking about the care of art in public space, it is worth emphasizing that one of the essential categories are play elements and functional sculptures, which unfortunately have become an almost extinct species due to their gradual decay and demolition.

After many, many years, our adult children confided to us that, despite all the restrictions, they secretly climbed the slide. Thank God, nothing happened to them. In addition to the birth of the work, the peculiar description also gives an insight into his future life - mainly by thematizing the method of subsequent use of functional sculpture, which, as it turned out, was not without its problems. What is striking is the discrepancy between the “adult” idea of the safety of the element, and the children’s world, whose imagination and desire for adventure correspond to a rather bolder and less regulated environment.

Příspěvek vznikl jako jeden z výstupů ze semináře Poválečná architektura, který proběhl na FA ČVUT v Praze v zimním semestru 2020–2021. Kláry Brůhové a jednotlivých studentů a studentek. Brůhová se fenoménem tzv. funkčních plastik a tématem autorsky řešených dětských hřišť druhé poloviny 20. století zabývá dlouhodobě – svůj výzkum prezentovala na několika vědeckých konferencích a v odborných textech.

The paper was created as one of the outputs from the seminar Post-War Architecture, which took place at the FA CTU in Prague in the winter semester 2020 - 2021. As part of the seminar led by Klára Brůhová and Pavel Směták, students of the Design program worked on the topic of post-war children’s playgrounds and play elements. Student research brought a number of interesting and as yet unpublished information, which is gradually presented in the form of partial studies and texts created in collaboration with Dr. Klára Brůhová and individual students. Brůhová has been dealing with the phenomenon of so-called functional sculptures and the topic of author´s designed children’s playgrounds of the second half of the 20th century for a long time - she has presented her research at several scientific conferences and in professional texts.

Od konce roku 2015 funguje internetová databáze umění pro architekturu a veřejný prostor Ostravské sochy, která vznikla za účelem dokumentace uměleckých děl v exteriérech i interiérech města Ostravy.

Jejím hlavním cílem je popularizovat umění, které vzniklo či vzniká pro architekturu a veřejný prostor města, a tím přispívat k jeho ochraně.1 Zájem občanů, ale také pozornost ze strany úřadů, mohou pomoci k uchování tohoto dědictví. Člověk si může uvědomit hodnotu těchto děl pouze tehdy, bude-li si jich všímat, ne je trpně či bez povšimnutí obcházet. Klíčové je upozorňovat na hodnotu uměleckých realizací zejména majitele, kteří s nimi nakládají a zachování, či naopak zánik díla spočívá především na jejich rozhodnutí.

Osvětě v této oblasti se v Ostravě vcelku daří. Město a některé jeho obvody začaly po vzniku databáze, ale také následkem upozorňování na špatný stav a hodnotu konkrétních děl v jejich držení, s budováním základní evidence uměleckých děl. Ukázalo se, že mnoho nástěnných realizací, ale i volně stojících soch nebylo nikdy do majetku města zapsáno, ačkoli budova či pozemek městu patří a město bylo v minulosti dle archivních zdrojů jejich investorem. Tato praxe „nezájmu“ byla zřejmě běžná v řadě českých měst.

Chceme-li umění chránit a upozorňovat na jeho hodnoty, je dobré znát pozadí jeho vzniku (v prvé řadě autora a dataci). V případě Ostravy, respektive Moravskoslezského kraje vůbec, se staly důležitým pomocníkem archivní zdroje, konkrétně archivní fond Dílo, podnik Českého fondu výtvarných umění – oblastní středisko Ostrava, uložený v Zemském archivu v Opavě, jenž je jedním z oblastních fondů tohoto celostátního podniku, který se v minulosti vyhnul čilé skartaci. V mnoha případech se dá spolehnout také na starší literaturu (zejm. kunsthistorickou práci Marie Štastné2, jež čerpala z týchž archivních pramenů, ovšem před utříděném fondu, tudíž v omezenějším měřítku), případně další zdroje informací (např. katalogy autorů, které jsou využitelné tehdy, víme-li,

že daný autor pro dané město něco vytvořil). Snad poprvé byly ve velkém zužitkovány celostátní seznamy realizací podniku Dílo pro konkrétní roky, které však vycházely pouze pro léta 1972–1989 (ty jsou však ve své stručnosti často nekonkrétní, nepřesné a některá díla mohou v těchto seznamech – zřejmě z důvodu opomenutí – absentovat úplně).3 Zhruba od roku 2016 se město Ostrava soustavněji zaměřuje na péči o svůj umělecký fond. Množství děl a jejich příslušnost pod jednotlivé obvody města někdy tuto práci znesnadňují, avšak magistrát města zřídil např. fond vyhrazený na každoroční podporu oprav tohoto uměleckého dědictví, díky němuž se podařilo řadu děl kvalitně zrestaurovat. Podporu zde má také vznik nového umění. Snaha o kvalitativní hledisko vedla k zavedení praxe uměleckých soutěží. Dosud se uskutečnily umělecké soutěže na Památník obětem střelby ve Fakultní nemocnici (2020) či Památník válečným veteránům (vítěz vybrán teprve napodruhé, roku 2020). Protože klub Fiducia chce jít tomuto úsilí příkladem, uspořádal rovněž dvě výtvarné soutěže – na památník pro hrob významného meziválečného sochaře Augustina Handzla (2018) a pamětní desku obětem ostravských monstrprocesů na Čapkově sokolovně (2020). Město Ostrava také nabízí finanční podporu projektům zaměřeným na kultivaci veřejného prostoru, které klub Fiducia již dvakrát využil k restaurování kovových plastik z Mezinárodního sympozia prostorových forem, jež se v Ostravě odehrálo v letech 1967, 1969 a 1993. Silně v posledních letech rezonuje umění pro architekturu v prioritách Vysoké školy báňské – Technické univerzity Ostrava, kde vznikla reprezentativní publikace o umění v rámci univerzitního kampusu,4 ale také se zde konstituuje univerzitní muzeum, jehož součástí je i umělecká sbírka.

Významná je role občanských aktivit, které upozorňují na problematické jevy, přispívají k jejich medializaci, ale také v případě nutnosti jednají ve prospěch zacho-

vání ohroženého objektu. Již roku 2014 byla touto cestou zachráněna brutalistní plastika Směrník od Václava Uruby (1969), která stávala v předprostoru železničního nádraží Havířov, o jehož demolici dlouhá léta usilovaly České dráhy a město Havířov. Díky aktivitám spolku Důl architektury, které vedly k odkládání demolice, se podařilo nádražní budovu zachránit. Ovšem zchátralá betonová plastika, jejíž zničení v roce 2014 mělo být pomyslným předstupněm zničení celého nádraží, už v daném prostoru nemohla být zachována a jedinou šancí byl převoz jinam. Důl architektury se spojil s ostravským klubem Fiducia a socha byla po odkoupení za 1 Kč deinstalována a převezena do Ostravy, kde se jí ujalo tamní pracoviště Národního památkového ústavu. To sice v následujícím roce zaplatilo restaurační práce a instalaci před svým ostravským sídlem, ovšem náklady na převoz díla v roce 2014 musely být hrazeny z darů.5 Nejhůře polapitelné jsou plány, jež mají s uměleckými díly ve svém vlastnictví soukromí majitelé, různé podniky, ale také instituce zřizované státem či městem, avšak s poměrně silnými pravomocemi ve věcech nakládání s majetkem (do určité míry i školy). V takovém případě se aktivní občan málokdy dozví předem o úmyslu odstranit umělecké dílo nebo přestavět či zbořit celý objekt. Šance zachránit objekt poukazem na jeho hodnotu či nabídnout např. deinstalaci a převzetí díla městem či jinou organizací, se tak snižují.

Občas se záchrana podaří, ale převládají spíš případy, kdy jsme konfrontováni již s negativním důsledkem takového počínání (např. zničení monumentálního reliéfu Václava Uruby z roku 1967 na obchodní galerii Kotva v Ostravě-Zábřehu roku 2014 nebo zničení kovového reliéfu se skleněnými prvky od Iva Příleského z roku 1972 na hlavní ostravské poště v OstravěPřívoze roku 2018).

V poslední době se stal velkým tématem v ostravském prostředí, a díky zájmu Pavla Karouse i v celorepublikovém kontextu, osud Památníku budování socialismu

z roku 1977, pro který bylo použito triplikované sousoší brněnského sochaře Miloše Axmana Komunisté (realizováno poprvé v polovině 60. let v bronzu pro Brněnské výstavní veletrhy, roku 1973 v kameni pro Moravské náměstí v Brně). Dílo zobrazující atomového vědce, dělníka se standartou a ženu s družicí (alegorii vesmírného výzkumu) už dlouhá léta chátrá a jednotlivé složky města i veřejnosti se opakovaně přou o jeho osud, přičemž jedni si přejí, aby dílo z veřejného prostoru zmizelo, jiní by jej v určité, třeba aktualizované podobě zachovali jako připomínku dané doby a dobře odvedenou sochařskou práci. Tento souboj názorů otevírá nové otázky, které v Ostravě dosud nebyly řešeny – např. míru ideologizace sousoší, jeho příslušnost době normalizace (model díla vznikl již roku 1957, ale za normalizace byla socha pro daný prostor využita) a zejména otázku, zda takové sousoší lze „pouze“ restaurovat.6

Since the end of 2015, an internet database of art for architecture and public space Ostravské sochy (Ostrava sculptures) has been in operation, which was created to document artworks in the exteriors and interiors of the city of Ostrava. Its main goal is to popularize the art that was or is being created for the architecture and public space of the city, and thus contribute to its protection.1 The interest of citizens, but also the attention of the authorities, can help to preserve this heritage. One can realize the value of these works only by noticing them, not bypassing them passively or unnoticed. The key is to draw attention to the value of artistic realizations. Especially the owners who handle them and the preservation or, on the contrary, the extinction of the work depends primarily on their decision.

Enlightenment in this area is quite successful in Ostrava. The city and some of its districts began with the construction of a basic registry of works of art, after the creation of the database, but also as a result of drawing attention to the poor condition and value of specific works in their possession. It turned out that many wall implementations, as well as free-standing statues, were never registered in the city’s property, although the building or land belongs to the city and the city was in the past, according to archival sources, their investor. This practice of “lack of interest” was probably common in many Czech cities.

If we want to protect art and draw attention to its values, it’s good to know the background of its origin (primarily the author and dating). In the case of Ostrava, or the Moravian-Silesian Region in general, archival resources have become an important helper, especially the Dílo, company of Czech Fund of Fine Arts - regional center in Ostrava archive fund stored in the Provincial Archive in Opava, which is one of the regional funds of this national company that has in the past avoided brisk shredding. In many cases, it is also possible to rely on older literature (especially the

art historical work of Marie Štastná2, who drew from the same archival sources, but before classifying the collection, therefore on a more limited scale), or other sources of information (eg catalogs of authors that are usable if we know that the author created something for the city). Perhaps for the first time, national lists of Dílo’s realizations for specific years were used extensively, but they were only published for the years 1972–1989 (however, they are often vague, inaccurate in their brief and some works may be absent from these lists - probably due to omissions).3 Since about 2016, the city of Ostrava has been focusing more systematically on the care of its art fund.

The number of works and their affiliation under the individual districts of the city sometimes make this work difficult, but the city council has set up, for example, a fund dedicated to the annual support of repairs of this artistic heritage, thanks to which many works have been well restored. The creation of new art is also supported here. The pursuit of a qualitative aspect led to the introduction of the practice of art competitions. So far, art competitions have taken place for the Památník obětem střelby ve Fakultní nemocnici (Memorial to the Victims of Shooting at the University Hospital) (2020) or the Památník válečným veteránům (Memorial to War Veterans, the winner was selected only for the second time, in 2020). Because the Fiducia club wants to lead by example in this effort, it also organized two art competitions - a memorial for the tomb of the important interwar sculptor Augustin Handzel (2018) and a memorial plaque to the victims of Ostrava’s monster trials at Čapek’s Sokolovna (2020). The City of Ostrava also offers financial support for projects aimed at cultivating public space, which the Fiducia Club has twice used to restore metal sculptures from the International Symposium on Spatial Forms, which took place in Ostrava in 1967, 1969 and 1993. Art for architecture has resonated strongly in recent years in

the priorities of the University of Mining - Technical University of Ostrava, where a representative publication on art was created within the university campus4, but also a university museum is established here, which also includes an art collection.

The role of civic activities is important, because they draw attention to problematic phenomena, contribute to their media coverage, but also, if necessary, act in favor of preserving the endangered object.

Already in 2014, the brutalist sculpture Směrník ( The direction) by Václav Uruba (1969) was saved in this way, which stood in the foreground of the Havířov railway station, which Czech Railways and the town of Havířov sought to demolish for many years. Thanks to the activities of the Důl architektury association (Mine of Architecture), which led to the postponement of demolition, the station building was saved.

However, the dilapidated concrete sculpture, the destruction of which in 2014 was supposed to be an imaginary prelude to the destruction of the entire station, could no longer be preserved in the given area and the only chance was to transport it elsewhere.

Důl architektury association merged with the Fiducia club in Ostrava, and after the purchase for CZK 1, the statue was uninstalled and transported to Ostrava, where it was taken over by the local workplace of the National Heritage Institute. Although the Institute paid for restoration work and installation in front of its Ostrava headquarters in the following year, the costs of transporting the work in 2014 had to be covered by donations.5 The plans with artworks, which are owned by private owners, various businesses, but also institutions set up by the state or the city, but with relatively strong powers in matters of property management (to some extent also schools), are the most difficult to catch.

In such case, the active citizen rarely finds out in advance of the intention to remove the work of art or to rebuild or demolish the entire building. The chances of saving an object by pointing out its value or offering, for example, the uninstallation and acceptance of the work by the city or another organization are thus reduced. Sometimes rescue is successful, but cases where we are already confronted with the negative consequences of such actions prevail (eg destruction of the monumental relief of Václav Uruba in 1967 at the Kotva shopping gallery in OstravaZábřeh in 2014 or destruction of a metal relief with glass elements by Ivo Příleský from 1972 at the main Ostrava post office in Ostrava-Přívoz in 2018).

Recently, the fate of the Památník budování socialismu (Monument to the Building of Socialism) from 1977, for which a triplicated sculpture of the Brno sculptor Miloš Axman Komunisté (Communists) (implemented for the first time in the mid-1960s in bronze

for the Brno Exhibition Fairs, in 1973 in stone for Moravian Square in Brno), has become a major theme in the Ostrava environment, and also in national context, thanks to the interest of Pavel Karous. The work depicting an atomic scientist, a worker with a sign and a woman with a satellite (an allegory of space research) has been falling into disrepair for many years, and individual parts of the city and the public have repeatedly argued over his fate. While some wish the work to disappear from public space, others would keep it in a certain, for example updated form, as a reminder of the time and a well-done sculptural work. This duel of opinions opens new questions that have not yet been resolved in Ostrava - such as the level of ideologisation of the sculptural group, its affiliation to the time of normalization (model of the work was created in 1957, but the sculpture was used for the area during the period of normalization) and in particular the question of whether such sculptures can be “only“ restored.6

Absolvent oborů český jazyk a literatura a historie na Filozofické fakultě Ostravské univerzity a postgraduálního studia Teorie a dějiny české literatury tamtéž.

Svůj odborný zájem směřuje k české barokní literatuře, zejména kramářským písním. Mimo literární oblast se zabývá kulturou regionu severní Moravy a českého Slezska, zvláště dokumentací uměleckých děl (tzv. monumentálních realizací) pro architekturu a veřejný prostor z 2. poloviny 20. století. Od roku 2011 je vědeckým pracovníkem Filozofické fakulty Ostravské univerzity (člen Katedry české literatury a literární vědy a v současné době ředitel Centra regionálních studií).

Je členem Okrašlovacího spolku Za krásnou Ostravu, v jehož rámci se zaměřuje na projekty souvisejících s péčí o umění ve veřejném prostoru (od konce roku 2015 provozují webovou databázi Ostravské sochy: www.ostravskesochy.cz). Dlouhodobě spolupracuje také s Vysokou školou báňskou – Technickou univerzitou Ostrava, kde je členem rady Univerzitního muzea, k němuž přísluší také významná sbírka uměleckých děl v architektuře.

Graduate of the fields of Czech language and literature and history at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Ostrava and postgraduate studies in Theory and History of Czech Literature at the same faculty. He focuses his professional interest on Czech Baroque literature, especially peddler’s songs. Outside the literary field, he deals with the culture of the region of northern Moravia and Czech Silesia, especially the documentation of artworks (so-called monumental implementations) for architecture and public space from the second half of the 20th century. Since 2011 he has been a researcher at the Faculty of Arts at the University of Ostrava (member of the Department of Czech Literature and Literary Studies and currently the director of the Center for Regional Studies). He is a member of the The Beautification Association Za krásnou Ostravu (For Beautiful Ostrava), within which he focuses on projects related to the care of art in public space (since the end of 2015, they have operated the Ostravské sochy web database: www. ostravskesochy.cz). Betonový bazének před červenou budovou na konci kampusu, vysypaný kamínky a štěrkem. Mezi dvěma pařezy usazený na kovovém stvolu sedí obrovský skleněný motýl, anebo krystal, skleněná „papírová vlaštovka”? Teprve zkoumavější pohled odhalí v duhově hlubokých vrstvách skla rozevřenou knihu a její popsané stránky. Ale odhalí i to, že jedna stránka chybí, další má uraženou hranu jako oslí uši, a mezi silnými listy skla jsou namísto záložky vražené – kameny… To už pak člověku vůbec zůstává rozum stát. Nádherná skleněná plastika jen takhle volně na vzduchu, vlastně je trochu zázrak, že tu ještě stojí, byť trochu bezradně a bezprizorně. Není nenápadná, ale tak trochu neviditelná ano. A tomu, kdo si jí všimne, buď stojí za to zkoušet pevnost skla, anebo pokusit se rozluštit „tajemství“ napsané na jejích stránkách…

Právě podobný zážitek inicioval i projekt Hmotnost, který si vzal za cíl rozluštit nejen příběh konkrétní skleněné plastiky, ale také prozkoumat širší území, ve kterém trávíme tolik času, tedy v areálu kampusu vysokých technických škol v pražských Dejvicích.

Tento uzavřený soubor budov specifického určení představuje velmi vhodný vzorek pro quasi vědecké zkoumání – pátrání po výtvarných dílech, rozesetých vně i uvnitř školních budov, odkrývání jejich historie a hledání jejich smyslu.

Za běžného stavu se v dejvickém kampusu pohybují tisíce lidí, převážně vysokoškoláků, když se ale namátkou zeptáte, zda o tom místě něco vědí, nebo jestli si všimli, většinou nepochodíte. A přitom tento úzký okrsek o rozloze kolem 20 ha by sám o sobě mohl sloužit jako učebnice dějin architektury 20. století, ale klidně i jako kronika událostí „velkých dějin“, na pozadí jejichž běhu se odehrávají lidské životy.

Právě architektura je nejvíc každodenním svědkem doby, ale ve svém měřítku a užitnosti bývá někdy její výpověď nečitelná, těžko přístupná. Kdo ještě v dnešní době rozluští v tvaru římsy a portiku zprávu o věhlasu a stabilitě instituce, která sídlí za zdmi

budovy, nebo kdo rozpozná v pastelových odstínech fasádních sklíček touhu po inovaci a progresivnost, ke které cílí zde usazená vědecká pracoviště?

Interpretace architektury je špiónská mise pro agenty speciálního školení. Výtvarnému umění ve veřejném prostoru už prapůvodně náleží role komunikátora, protějšku v dialogu, se kterým, snad díky uchopitelnému měřítku zpravidla snáze nacházíme společnou řeč. Už od školních let jsme se přece učili hledat za obrazy či sochami „nějaký význam“, co tím chtěl autor říci. Výtvarné dílo, integrované v architektuře, nebo ve veřejném prostoru ale nevypovídá jen o sobě a o svém tvůrci, hovoří právě i o situaci a historickém okamžiku, do kterého vstoupilo a z něhož vzešlo.

Ale ještě mnohem více vypovídá o nás a naší době.

O tom, čemu přikládáme váhu (Hmotnost), o tom, co je nám lhostejné a lehkovážně hážeme za hlavu, nebo o tom, na čem v našich očích ulpěla tíha doby.

Právě tohle poselství máme ale tendenci – pochopitelně – nejvíce odmítat. Copak má někdo právo sahat nám do svědomí? A přesně právě tohle veřejné výtvarné umění dělá; překáží nám a zdržuje od pohodlného (vy)užívání prostředí. Přinejmenším ale, i bez ohledu na kvalitu, nebo naší vůli k pochopení, je každé takové dílo aktem péče a přiznáním, že existují i nějaké tzv. vyšší hodnoty (přesahující každodenní praxis), na které se ale v dnešní době často moc nehraje.

Projekt Hmotnost je jedním z desítek podobných lokálních aktivit, které si kladou za cíl postavit bariéru šířící se slepotě. V první fázi byla naše práce běháním po kampusu a hledáním, v další pak pátráním po souvislostech v zaprášených archivech a knihách, nebo taky v šanonech soupisů majetku, a někdy ve schůzkách s pamětníky. A taky v desítkách emailů a vyjednávání, protože jsme chtěli nejenom dokumentovat současný stav, ale třeba taky něco změnit.

Například zprovoznit osvětlení skleněných plastik ve foyer Fakulty stavební. Jindy stačilo vzít kýbl s kartá-

čem a pustit se do čištění - k tomu nebylo zapotřebí nic víc než najít společné volné odpoledne. Objevili jsme třicítku artefaktů, více či méně přístupných a další zůstala zavřená v kancelářích, jiná třeba vůbec nevznikla a zůstalo jen u plánu. Vypátrali jsme zvláštní souvztažnosti mezi objekty, výtvarnými díly a jejich autory. A to, co se nám podařilo zjistit, chceme předat dál. A vzbudit pozornost a zájem u těch, kteří chodí kolem. Abychom se všichni naučili uvažovat.

Between two stumps perched on a metal trunk sits a huge glass butterfly, or a crystal, a glass “paper swallow”? Only a more inquisitive look reveals an open book and its described pages in the rainbow-deep layers of glass. But it also reveals that one page is missing, the other has a bounced edge like a donkey’s ears, and among the thick sheets of glass there are, instead of a bookmark, embossed - stones… After that, a person’s mind is left to stand. It makes the mind boggle. A beautiful glass sculpture just like that in the open air, it’s actually a bit of a miracle that it’s still standing here, albeit a little clueless and homeless. It’s not inconspicuous, but it’s a bit invisible. And for those who notice it, it is either worth testing the strength of the glass, or trying to decipher the “secret” written on its pages...

A similar experience was initiated by the project Hmotnost, which aimed not only to decipher the story of a specific glass sculpture, but also to explore a wider area in which we spend so much time, i.e. on the campus of technical universities in Dejvice in Prague. This closed set of buildings of a specific purpose is a very suitable sample for quasi-scientific research - searching for works of art scattered outside and inside school buildings, uncovering their history and finding their meaning.

Under normal conditions, there are thousands of people on the Dejvice campus, mostly university students, but if you ask at random if they know something about the place, or if they noticed something, you usually go around empty-handed. At the same time, this narrow district of about 20 hectares could in itself serve as a textbook of the history of architecture of the 20th century, but also as a chronicle of the events of “great history”, against the background of which human lives take place. It is architecture that is the most everyday witness of the time, but in its scale and usefulness, its

statement is sometimes illegible, difficult to access.

Who is still deciphering the message of the fame and stability of the institution behind the building in the shape of a ledge and portico, or who recognizes in pastel shades of facade glass the desire for innovation and progressiveness aimed at the scientific workplaces established here? Interpretation of architecture is a spy mission for special training agents.

Fine art in public space already originally belongs to the role of the communicator, a counterpart in the dialogue, with whom, perhaps thanks to the graspable scale, it is usually easier to find common ground.

Since the school years, we have learned to look for “some meaning” behind paintings or sculptures, what the author wanted to say. An artwork, integrated in architecture or in a public space, does not speak only about itself and its creator, but speaks just about the situation and the historical moment into which it entered and from which it arose. But it says a lot more about us and our time. But it says much more about us and our time. About what we give weight (Hmotnost), about what we consider indifferent and what we lightly throw behind our heads, or about what the weight of time has stuck to in our eyes. But it is this message that we tend to reject, of course. Does anyone have the right to reach into our conscience?

And this is exactly what public fine art does; it hinders us and keeps us from comfortable use of the environment. But at least, regardless of quality or our will to understand, every such work is an act of care and an admission that there are some so-called higher values (beyond everyday praxis), which are often not played much today.

The Hmotnost project is one of dozens of similar local activities that aim to build a barrier to the spread of blindness. In the first phase, our job was to run around the campus and search, in the next we looked for connections in dusty archives and books, or also in files of property inventories, and some-

times in meetings with witnesses. And also in dozens of emails and negotiations, because we wanted not only to document the current state, but also to change something. For example, put into operation lightning glass sculptures in the foyer of the Faculty of Civil Engineering. At other times, it was enough to take a bucket of brushes and start cleaning - it took nothing more than to find a common free afternoon.

We discovered thirty artifacts, more or less accessible, and others remained closed in the offices, others, for example, did not arise at all and remained only at the plan. We have found special correlations between objects, works of art and their authors. And what we managed to find out, we want to pass on. And arouse the attention and interest of those who walk around.

So that we can all learn to think.

Spojuje nás zájem a místo, spojuje nás zájem o místo.

Projekt Hmotnost vznikl jako volné příležitostné uskupení studentů, zaměstnanců a přátel, osob, které se pohybují v dejvickém kampusu ČVUT. Každý z nás se nějakým způsobem zabývá prostorem, ve kterém trávíme poměrně mnoho času. Snažíme se vnímat prostředí nejenom jako utilitární dispozici, jež má splnit okamžité potřeby a sloužit... I prostředí vytvořené člověkem, získá podobně jako příroda jistou svébytnost, a to, čemu se říká genius loci. Často právě výtvarné umění významně modifikuje charakter prostředí, ale zároveň pro svoji „nefunkčnost“ je nejvíce ohroženo.

Vytkli jsme si za cíl vypátrat výtvarní díla, rozesetá na různých místech po kampusu, tak aby nám vyvstal celistvější obraz místa. Každá ze školních budov dejvického areálu má vlastní malou „galerii“, sbírku výtvarných děl.

Chtěli jsme je postavit do vzájemného kontextu, protože patrně nikdy nebyly k vidění pohromadě. Chtěli jsme prozkoumat důvody a okolnosti jejich vzniku, kdo za nimi stojí, a co znamenají. Bádali jsme v knihách, časopisech, archivech, hledali pamětníky.

A to, co jsme zjistili, předáváme dál, protože znalost a porozumění vytváří vztah a zajišťuje péči. Aby i ostatní věděli, že je čeho si vážit. Každý z našeho týmu přispěl tím, co umí. Vydali jsme mapu, brožurku-průvodce, Veronika Kastlová natočila film, Miloš Sedláček díla nafotil, Matěj Kvasnička udělal grafiku, uspořádali jsme výstavy, procházky na místa činu…

A dál? Jsme ve střehu. Hlídáme, vymýšlíme, „lobujeme“.

Určitě zase bude důvod se potkat.

We are united by interest and place, we are united by interest in place.

The Hmotnost project was created as a free occasional grouping of students, employees and friends, people who move on the Dejvice campus of the Czech Technical University. Each of us somehow deals with the space in which we spend quite a lot of time. We try to perceive the environment not only as a utilitarian disposition, which is to meet immediate needs and serve... Even the environment created by man, like nature, acquires a certain originality, and what is called genius loci. It is often the fine art that significantly modifies the character of the environment, but at the same time it is most endangered due to its “dysfunction”.

We set ourselves the goal of finding works of art, scattered in various places around the campus, so that we have a more complete picture of the place. Each of the school buildings in the Dejvice area has its own small “gallery”, a collection of artworks. We wanted to put them in context, because they were probably never seen together. We wanted to explore the reasons and circumstances of their origin, who is behind them and what they mean. We searched in books, magazines, archives, looked for witnesses.

And we pass on what we have learned because knowledge and understanding create a relationship and provide care. So that others know that there is something to appreciate. Each of our team has contributed what they can. We published a map, a brochure-guide, Veronika Kastlová made a film, Miloš Sedláček photographed the works, Matěj Kvasnička made graphics, we organized exhibitions, walks to the venue…

And what next? We’re on alert. We watch, we invent, we “lobby”. There will definitely be a reason to meet again.

Kreatívne komunity spájajú: MagiC Carpets a verejné umenie v praxi

Verejný priestor je začarované územie, ktoré si často predstavujeme s remeselnými pamiatkami a „umeleckými“ symbolmi, ktoré priťahujú turistov aj zrak miestnych – je to nástroj na znovuobjavenie miesta, spojenie komunity, každodenného života a umenia.

Umenie vo verejnom priestore sa často stáva vzdelávacou skúsenosťou pre všetkých zúčastnených: sponzora, kurátora, umelca, komunitu, miestnych obyvateľov a dokonca aj pre konkrétne miesto a jeho okolie. Procesy, na ktorých sa ešte len začína pracovať, sa môžu stať náročnou výzvou, ktorá vyvolá konflikty, diskusie, názorové vyjadrenia, a mnoho ďalšieho, nehovoriac o právnych postupoch, ktoré zostávajú pred zrakmi verejnosti ukryté. Umenie vo verejnom priestore však aj napriek tomu vytvára pre celú komunitu pozitívne prostredie, kde sa môžu jej členovia realizovať v činnostiach, ktoré sú dôležité pre blaho miestnych obyvateľov a ktoré zároveň rozširujú tvorivý priestor. Z tejto potreby vznikla vďaka programu Kreatívna Európa platforma „MagiC Carpets“, ktorá združuje kultúrne organizácie, začínajúcich kurátorov a umelcov. Tí sa spoločne vydávajú na cestu tvorby umenia vo verejných priestoroch a vďaka obrovským možnostiam využívajú neznáme miesta a zapájajú komunity do spolupráce v spoločných tvorivých postupoch. Tento konkrétny projekt vyvoláva otázky o príbehu mesta, modernej spoločnosti, dostupnosti kultúry, účasti a kultúrnom aktivizme prostredníctvom umeleckých postupov vo verejných priestoroch. Avšak nájsť umelca, ktorý pracuje vo vnútri komunity, nie je jednoduché a nájsť niekoho takého zvyčajne vyžaduje siete kurátorov a kreatívnych organizácií, ktoré by prehľadali celé more umelcov a našli by v danej oblasti tých najinovatívnejších. Platforma ako „MagiC Carpets“ predstavuje jednotu kurátorov – zdieľané kontakty a znalosti umožňujú miestnym umelcom vďaka rezidenčnému programu dosiahnuť požadované výsledky, pomáhajú im vycestovať do zahraničia a pracovať za hranicami svojich priestorov.

Keďže chápanie verejného priestoru sa mení, dobre známe miesta určené prevažne na zábavu a stretávanie sa pomaly komercializujú. Tí, ktorí sa zvyknú stretávať na takých miestach alebo sa ich snažia vytvárať, sa presúvajú do barov, reštaurácií a na oficiálne vyhradené verejné miesta. Táto skutočnosť umožnila verejnému umeniu vniesť do praxe inovatívny dialóg, ktorý pozýva ľudí späť do verejného priestoru a stáva sa podstatnou súčasťou miesta a mesta, čo materialisticky zvyšuje hodnotu okolia a šíri povedomie o samotnom priestore. Konkrétnym príkladom takéhoto priestorového povedomia vytvoreného členmi miestnej komunity je rezidenčný pobyt, s ktorým prišla umelkyňa Mary Conroy a organizácia Folkestone Fringe (Folkestone, Veľká Británia) a kde viedla spoločensky angažovaný projekt „What are you made of, Folkstone?“ („Z čoho si vyrobený, Folkstone?“).

Cieľom projektu bolo pokúsiť sa pochopiť spojenie medzi miestnymi obyvateľmi a miestom, kde žijú, osláviť bohatú a rozmanitú krajinu Folkestonu a pozrieť sa detailnejšie na súčasné problémy z lokálneho aj globálneho hľadiska. Vo Folkestone sa objavili veľké otázniky s jednou hlavnou otázkou, ktoré sa nedali prehliadnuť – koniec koncov, projekt „MagiC Carpets“ bol v dôsledku pandémie posunom od pôvodných nápadov, ako mal rezidenčný pobyt pôvodne vyzerať.

Tento projekt napokon vzišiel z nedostatku umeleckého terénneho výskumu a pre Mary Conroy fungoval ako spôsob, ktorým sa spojila s miestnymi obyvateľmi a požiadala ich, aby s pomocou kurátorky Georgie Scott zdieľali atmosféru Folkestonu. Proces „tagovania“ na sociálnych sieťach a aj samotní ľudia, ktorí fotografovali a slobodne zdieľali fotky s umelkyňou a zvyškom sveta, priniesol nové, lákavé a participatívne uhly pohľadu. Pokiaľ ide o verejné umenie, témy, ktoré nastoľuje, sa môžu týkať pozitívneho vplyvu na zelenú krajinu až po džentrifikáciu, ktorá vykresľuje vzťah k pouličnému umeniu alebo slúži ako pripomienka podujatia či festivalu. V dôsledku toho sa

verejné umenie stáva postupom, ktorý zapája komunitu a zabezpečuje aktivity a vzdelávanie.

Kurátorské procesy v zákulisí umenia vo verejnom priestore a zapojenie komunity a miestnych obyvateľov sa môžu stať mimoriadne náročnou, ale obohacujúcou skúsenosťou, ktorá si vyžaduje trpezlivosť, vyrovnanosť a oddanosť. Kurátor sa stáva mostom medzi umelcom a komunitou, zapája verejnosť, úrady, uľahčuje procesy a spolupracuje s partnermi a podporovateľmi na vyvážení komplikovaných procesov a riešení všetkých problémov, ktoré počas toho procesu vzniknú. Táto práca napriek tomu plní rozhodujúcu úlohou, a to najmä v začiatkoch verejných umeleckých projektov v rámci komunity, ktoré môžu vyriešiť miestne problémy a nedorozumenia. Napríklad umelkyňa Paulina Almeida bola hostiteľkou rezidenčného pobytu v Záhrebe, o ktorý sa kurátorsky postarala kreatívna agentúra LAB 852 (Záhreb, Chorvátsko). Paulina Almeida sa rozhodla zamerať svoju pozornosť na miestny problém neolitického náleziska Grapčevovej jaskyne, ktorú kúpil súkromný investor. Umelkyňa viedla s rezidentmi workshopy, kde mohli účastníci prehodnotiť minulosť a nazrieť do budúcnosti miestneho okolia. Záverečné predstavenie s názvom „Immortelle“ („Nesmrteľný“) sa ponorilo hlboko do udržateľných foriem cestovného ruchu a súčasného umenia a sústredilo pozornosť miestnych obyvateľov, ktorí chcú chrániť okolité prostredie. Ukázalo sa, že umelci môžu slobodne analyzovať perspektívu základného sociálneho prostredia vo verejnom priestore bez zásahu politického kontextu.

Kým ľudia dúfajú, že verejný priestor sa zmení na príjemné a atraktívne miesto pre komunitu, zjednotené kultúrne organizácie, ako napríklad Nový divadelný inštitút v Lotyšsku, umelecké centrum Jam Factory Art Center, nezisková kultúrna organizácia Ideias Emergentes, umelecká organizácia Folkestone Fringe, Bienále Kaunas a kreatívna agentúra LAB 852 budú diskutovať o tom, ako sa môžu organizácie chopiť

úlohy realizovania udržateľných, či dokonca krátkodobých verejných umeleckých projektov a zhromažďovať nápady rôznych sociálnych skupín, spolupracovať s umelcami a zapájať sa do tvorivých zmien, ktoré nám budú pripomínať to, čo je dôležité alebo upozorňovať na zabudnuté, zatiaľ čo sa bude miesto meniť na vzácny priestor pre svojich obyvateľov.

Medzi členov platformy „MagiC Carpets“ patrí Kaunas Biennial (Bienále Kaunas, vedúci projektu, Kaunas, Litva), EVA International – Ireland’s Biennial (Medzinárodné Bienále v Írsku, Limerick, Írsko), umelecká organizácia Folkestone Fringe (Folkestone, Veľká Británia), nezisková kultúrna organizácia Ideias Emergentes (Porto, Portugalsko), umelecké centrum Jam Factory Art Centre (Ľvov, Ukrajina), nezisková organizácia KUNSTrePUBLIC (Berlín, Nemecko), kreatívna agentúra LAB 852 (Záhreb, Chorvátsko), kreatívny tím Latitudo SRL (Rím, Taliansko), Kultúrna nadácia META (Bukurešť, Rumunsko), Nový divadelný inštitút v Lotyšsku (Riga, Lotyšsko), Novo Kulturno Naselje (Nové kultúrne stredisko, Nový Sad, Srbsko), Bienále Praha (Praha, Česká republika), kreatívna platforma Openspace Innsbruck (Innsbruck, Rakúsko), Tbilisi Photo Festival (Foto festival v Tbilisi, Gruzínsko), hudobná platforma Trempolino (Nantes, Francúzsko).

Creative Communities Connect: MagiC Carpets and public art in action

Public space is an enchanted territory, often imagined with crafty landmarks and “artsy” symbols that attracts the tourists and local eyes—a tool to reinvent the place, connect the community, every-day life, and art together. Art in public space often becomes a learning experience for all parties involved: sponsor, curator, artist, community, locals, and even of that specific place and its surroundings. Processes that go into the making can become a challenging task and spark conflicts, discussions, opinionated releases, and so much more, not to mention – the legal processes that stay beyond the creative parts. However, art in public space is creating a positive built environment for the community, where they can conduct activities that are important for locals’ well-being and expand creative space. From such need, the “Creative Europe” platform “MagiC Carpets” was born, which unites cultural organizations, emerging curators and artists that together embark on a journey of creating art in public space with great opportunities of utilising unknown places and involving communities in co-creative practices. This specific project raises questions about city story-telling, modern society, cultural accessibility, participation, and cultural activism through art processes in public places. Nonetheless, finding an artist who works within a community is not an easy task and, usually, finding them requires networks of curators and creative organizations to browse through a pool of artists who are most innovative in this field. Such a platform as “MagiC Carpets” showcases curators’ unity – shared contacts and knowledge help reach the desired results through a program of residencies and help local artists travel abroad and work beyond local spaces.

Since the understanding of public space is changing as it slowly becomes commercialized from well-known places of hang-outs and meet-ups. Those who often hang-out in such places or try to establish them moved to bars, restaurants, and officially dedicated

public spots. This enabled public art to become the innovative practice of dialogue that invites people back or to public space and becomes an essential component of the space and the city, materialistically increasing the value of the surroundings and increasing the awareness of the space itself. A specific example of such spatial awareness created with local community members would be a residency by the artist Mary Conroy with the Folkestone Fringe (Folkestone, UK), where she conducted a socially engaged project “What are you made of, Folkestone?”.

The project aimed at trying to understand a connection between the locals and the place they live in, celebrated the rich and diverse landscape of Folkestone and explored current issues locally and globally. Large signs with the main question arose in Folkestone and could not be missed – after all, this “MagiC Carpets” project was a shape-shift from original residency ideas due to a pandemic. Ultimately, it was a project born from the lack of artistic field-research and acted as a way for Conroy to connect with the locals and ask them to share the atmosphere of Folkestone with the help of the curator Georgie Scott. The process of social media tags and people taking and freely sharing pictures with the artist and the rest of the world opened new perspectives that were inviting and participatory. In general, when it comes to public art, the topics it raises can start from the positive influence of green landscape decisions to gentrification that draws the connection to street art or serve as a reminder for an event or festival. Consequently, public art becomes a process to engage the community and provide activities and education.

While curating processes behind the scenes of art in public spaces, community and locals’ involvement can become an extremely challenging but rewarding experience it requires patience, composure and devotion. Becoming the bridge between artist and community, the curator engages the public, the offi-

cials, facilitate processes and collaborates with partners and supporters to balance out the complicated processes and solve any issues arising. Nonetheless, this job becomes a critical role in initiating community-based public art projects that can solve local problems and misunderstandings. For example, the artist Paulina Almeida, hosted for a residency in Zagreb, curated by LAB 852 (Zagreb, Croatia), decided to focus her attention on the local complication of the Neolithic site of Grapčeva Cave which was sold to a private investor. The artist conducted workshops with residents in order to rethink the past and look into the future of local surroundings. The final performance titled “Immortelle” dived deep into sustainable forms of tourism and contemporary art, gathering the attention of local inhabitants that want to preserve the environment surrounding and making evident that artists can freely analyze the underlying social environment perspective in public space without political context to interfere.

As people hope to transform public space into a pleasant and attractive community spot, unified cultural organizations such as New Theatre Institute in Latvia, Jam Factory Art Center, Ideias Emergentes, Folkestone Fringe, Kaunas Biennial and LAB 852 will discuss how organizations can take on the task to perform sustainable or even short-term public art projects and gather ideas from different social groups, collaborate with artists and engage in creative change memorializing the important or drawing attention to forgotten while changing the place into a precious space for its inhabitants.

Od svojho založenia v roku 1997 sa Bienále Kaunas etablovalo ako jedno z najdôležitejších podujatí súčasného umenia v Európe, ktoré organizuje medzinárodné výmeny súčasných umelcov a ich umeleckých diel.

Na začiatku sa bienále zameriavalo na textilné umenie a spolupráce medzi umelcami v Pobaltských štátoch.

Neskôr sa rozrástlo o európskych aj medzinárodných umelcov a stalo sa medzinárodným podujatím, ktoré zastrešovali renomovaní odborníci: v roku 2015 kurátor a umelecký kritik Nicolas Bourriaud (Francúzsko) usporiadal slávnostný 10. ročník podujatia; v roku 2017 bola kurátorkou bienále umelkyňa, spisovateľka a kultúrna komentátorka Paulina Pukytė (Litva, Veľká Británia); v roku 2019 kurátorský tím tvorilo 5 začínajúcich kurátorov: Elisabeth Del Prete (Taliansko, Veľká Británia), Daniel Milnes (Veľká Británia, Nemecko), Lýdia Pribišová (Slovensko), Neringa Stoškutė (Litva) a Alessandra Troncone (Taliansko) a o nadchádzajúci 13. ročník podujatia, ktoré sa uskutoční 22. novembra 2021 až 20. februára 2022, sa postará kurátor Josée DrouinBrisebois z Kanady. Bienále Kaunas sa od jeho založenia zúčastnilo vyše 1400 umelcov z viac než 60 krajín sveta.

V priebehu rokov zohrávala pre formovanie Bienále Kaunas dôležitú úlohu história a procesy prebiehajúce v meste Kaunas. Keďže organizovanie každého ročníka bienále začína od nuly, a to zmenou štruktúry, podmienok účasti, charakteru výstav, hlavných konceptov a tiež zapojenia (nových) partnerov, kurátorov, umelcov a iných profesionálov pôsobiacich v rôznych oblastiach kultúry, východiskový bod – mesto Kaunas, jeho história a súčasne prebiehajúce podujatia – zostal nezmenený. Bienále Kaunas sa prezentuje ako platforma a príležitosť pre: - debaty umelcov a realizáciu inovatívnych myšlienok; - spoluprácu medzi umelcami a publikom; - posilnenie pocitu komunity cez tvorivé aktivity; - interdisciplinárne umelecké a akademické postupy; - medzinárodné a medzikontinentálne partnerstvá; - vytvorenie diskurzívnej a dostupnej kultúry.

Mesto ako ihrisko: Prípad Bienále Kaunas

Okrem toho sa Bienále Kaunas začalo spájať s obsadzovaním a prezentáciou súčasných umeleckých diel v súkromných a opustených neumeleckých priestoroch, v roku 2015 to bola napríklad budova Hlavnej pošty v Kaunase a bývalé textilné továrne „Drobė“ a „Dirbtinis pluoštas“ alebo v roku 2019 Železničná stanica v Kaunase a rôzne verejné priestory, ako napríklad mestské parky a námestia v roku 2017. Bienále sa stalo synonymom prezentácie súčasného umenia v neumeleckých priestoroch, mimo múzeí a galérií a očakávame, že takéto zasadenie do priestoru sa u návštevníkov bienále stretne s vysokým dopytom.

V roku 2017 sa konal 11. ročník Bienále Kaunas s názvom “There and Not There: (Im)possibility of a Monument” („Tam a nie tam: (Ne)možnosť pamätníka“). Tento ročník sa preslávil najmä svojou hlavnou výstavou, ktorá sa rozprestierala po celom Kaunase – od železničnej stanice až po predmestie Vilijampolė, ktoré bolo v minulosti oblasťou židovského geta. Kurátorka Paulina Pukytė predniesla myšlienku, ktorá sa snažila oponovať „konzervatívnej a autoritárskej tradícii pamiatok, jej inherentnému didaktizmu a demagógii. V snahe spochybniť súčasné techniky búrania a stavania a stimulovať a legitimizovať radikálne nové, súčasné a relevantné myšlienky a formy pripomínania nás táto myšlienka podnecuje k tomu, aby sme sa nielen pozreli späť na odstránené pamiatky a aby sme prehodnotili už tie existujúce, ale tiež aby sme si predstavili aj nové pamiatky“1. Bienále pozvalo litovských aj medzinárodných umelcov, aby sa bližšie pozreli na históriu Kaunasu a vytvorili dvadsaťtri inštalácií a zásahov špecifických pre dané miesto, a to práve vo verejnom priestore, ktorý odkazuje na minulé, súčasné a potenciálne budúce formy pripomínania. Výstavu verejného priestoru sprevádzali tri kontextuálne výstavy v Kaunas Picture Gallery (Obrazová galéria v Kaunase) a dvojdňový hovorený program „Contested Memory – Contested Spaces“ („Napadnutá spomienka – Napadnuté priestory“), ktorú kurátorsky pripravila dr. Rasa Antanavičiūtė.

V roku 2019, počas 12. ročníka Bienále Kaunas, bolo využitie verejného priestoru na prezentácie umeleckých diel vnímané menej ako forma pripomínania a namiesto toho sa zameriavalo na tému „premeny“ a „cesty“ vo vzťahu k búrlivej histórii Kaunasu. Kurátorský koncept vznikol na základe ambícií a túžby presne vymedziť Kaunas na európskej kultúrnej mape, keďže mesto sa v roku 2022 stane Európskym hlavným mestom kultúry. Kurátorský tím, ktorý študoval históriu mesta za posledné storočie, sa zameral na preskúmanie širších predstáv prechodu, premeny a opravy. V priebehu histórie Kaunas zažil prosperujúce obdobie, keď bol v rokoch 1919 až 1940 hlavným mestom (po anexii Vilniusu). Potom došlo k výmene moci a Kaunas sa počas druhej svetovej vojny dostal do rúk sovietskeho Ruska, neskôr nacionalisticko-socialistického Nemecka a nakoniec na päťdesiat rokov mesto opäť obsadili Sovieti, a to až do znovunastolenia nezávislosti Litvy v roku 1990. V roku 2004 Litva vstupom do Európskej únie posilnila svoje európske väzby. Toto „vyvoláva otázku, akú pozíciu by malo mesto po týchto večných zmenách a politických traumách kultúrne a ideologicky zastávať. Uprostred tohto posunu k novým spojencom skúma výstava After Leaving | Before Arriving (Po odchode | Pred príchodom) úlohu, ktorú môže kultúrna produkcia zohrávať pri spracovaní ideologických zmien a pri budovaní vzťahovej a národnej identity.“2 Diela litovských a medzinárodných umelcov boli prezentované na Železničnej stanici v Kaunase, ako kľúčovom mieste mestskej dopravnej infraštruktúry, v Kaunas Picture Gallery (Obrazová galéria v Kaunase) a na iných verejných priestranstvách, vrátane napadnutého miesta v parku Ramybės (Starý cintorín v Kaunase).

Medzi výstavnými miestami bolo po celom meste niekoľko prechodných bodov, ako napríklad Autobusová stanica v Kaunase, podchody, zastávky autobusu, lanovky aj diaľnica z Vilniusu do Kaunasu.

Kaunas sa so svojimi mnohými verejnými priestormi stal ihriskom podujatia Bienále Kaunas. Centrum

mesta je dostupné pešo a jeho mnohé verejné parky, námestia a poloverejné vnútrobloky sú prístupné bez väčších bariér aj chodcom. Ľudí lákajú verejné priestranstvá a mnohé z nich vplývajú na to, ako vnímame naše každodenné zážitky z mesta a v meste.

Vďaka tomu, že Bienále Kaunas funguje mimo múzejných a galerijných priestorov, zameriava sa na vytvorenie a posilnenie vzťahov medzi komunitou a mestom, a tiež pomáha zvýrazňovať a vytvárať vlastnú identitu mesta. Pre Bienále Kaunas slúžia verejné priestory ako miesta stretnutia, ktoré môžu uľahčiť sociálnu a politickú mobilizáciu a vyzvať k činu. Sú prostredím pre interakciu a výmenu nápadov, rozmanitosť a otvorenosť vplývajúcu na kvalitu nášho života a prostredia.

A ak pôsobenie na verejnom priestranstve poskytuje podujatiu príležitosti na to, aby na tej najvyššej úrovni prispelo k spoločenskému a kultúrnemu diskurzu, aj naďalej budeme mesto využívať ako svoje ihrisko.

City As a Playground: The Case of Kaunas Biennial

From its foundation in 1997, Kaunas Biennial has established itself as one of the most important contemporary art events in Europe, organising international exchanges of contemporary artists and artworks. In the beginning, the biennial’s focus was on textile art and collaborations between artists in the Baltic region.

Later, it grew to include European and international artists in its programme and became an international event curated by renowned professionals: in 2015, curator and art critic Nicolas Bourriaud (France) curated the celebratory 10th edition of the event; in 2017, the Biennial was curated by artist, writer and culture commentator Paulina Pukytė (Lithuania/UK); in 2019, the Biennial curatorial team included 5 emerging curators: Elisabeth Del Prete (Italy/UK), Daniel Milnes (UK/Germany), Lýdia Pribišová (Slovakia), Neringa Stoškutė (Lithuania) and Alessandra Troncone (Italy) and the upcoming 13th edition of the event, taking place between 12 November 2021 – 20 February 2022, will be curated by Josée Drouin-Brisebois (Canada). More than 1400 artists from more than 60 countries have already participated at the Kaunas Biennial since its establishment.

Over the years, for Kaunas Biennial, the history and the processes happening in Kaunas city have played an important role in shaping the event. Since every biennial is created from scratch by changing its structure, conditions of participation, character of exhibitions, main concepts as well as involving [new] partners, curators, artists and other professionals working in different areas of culture, the starting point – of Kaunas city, its history and current events – has remained unchanged. Kaunas Biennial presents itself as a platform and an opportunity for: – artists’ debates and the realisation of innovative ideas; – collaboration among artists and audiences; – the enhancement of the sense of community through creative activities; – interdisciplinary artistic and academic practices;

– international and intercontinental partnerships; – the creation of a discursive and accessible culture.

In addition, Kaunas Biennial event has become associated with occupying and presenting contemporary artworks in private and abandoned non-art spaces, such as the Kaunas Central Post Office building and former textiles factories “Drobė” and “Dirbtinis pluoštas” in 2015 or the Kaunas Railway Station in 2019, and various public spaces, such as parks and squares, around the city of Kaunas in 2017. The biennial has become synonymous with presentation of contemporary art in non-art spaces, outside museums and galleries, and this expectation from the biennial audience is in high-demand.

In 2017, the 11th Kaunas Biennial titled “There and Not There: (Im)possibility of a Monument” was particularly noted for its main exhibition, which spread across the city of Kaunas – from the Kaunas Railway station to the suburb of Vilijampolė, the former Jewish ghetto area. Curator Paulina Pukytė proposed an idea, which sought to oppose “the conservative and authoritarian tradition of monuments, its inherent didacticism and demagogy. Seeking to question the current practices of removing and erecting and to stimulate and legitimise radically new, contemporary and relevant ideas and forms of commemoration, it invited us to not only look back at removed monuments and to rethink existing monuments, but also to imagine new monuments”.1 The biennial invited Lithuanian and international artists to explore Kaunas’ history and create twenty-three site-specific installations and interventions in public spaces that refer to past, present and potential future forms of commemoration. The public-space exhibition was accompanied by three contextualised exhibitions at the Kaunas Picture Gallery and a twoday oral programme “Contested Memory – Contested Spaces” curated by dr. Rasa Antanavičiūtė.

In 2019, during the 12th edition of Kaunas Biennial event the use of public space for presentation of art-

works was less seen as a form of commemoration and instead focused on the topic of ‘transition’ and ‘journey’ in relation to the turbulent history of Kaunas city. The curatorial concept was formed on the basis of ambitions and desire to pinpoint the city on the European culture map by becoming the European Capital of Culture in 2022. Tracing the city’s history over the last century, the curatorial team aimed at examining the broader notions of passage, transition and repair. Over the course of history, Kaunas has experienced a prosperous period as the capital city of Lithuania between 1919 and 1940 (after the annexation of Vilnius), followed by change hands of power during the Second World War by Soviet Russia, then Nationalist Socialist Germany, and, finally, reoccupation by the Soviets for a fifty-year period until the Restoration of the Independence of Lithuania in 1990.

In 2004, Lithuania strengthened its European ties by gaining entry to the European Union. This “raises the question of how the city should position itself culturally and ideologically in the aftermath of such perpetual change and political trauma. In the midst of this shift towards new allegiances, After Leaving | Before Arriving examines the role cultural production can play in processing moments of ideological change and in the construction of relational and national identity.”2 Lithuanian and international artists’ works were presented at the Kaunas Railway Station, as a key site of the city’s transport infrastructure, Kaunas Picture Gallery and various public spaces, including the contested site of Ramybės Park/Kaunas Old Cemetery.

The exhibition sites included a number of transitory points across the city, such as the Kaunas Bus Station, underground passages, bus stops, funiculars, and the Vilnius-Kaunas highway.

Kaunas city with its many public spaces has become a playground for the Kaunas Biennial event. The city centre is of a walkable distance and its many public parks and squares, and semi-public inner courtyards

are accessible to pedestrians without major barriers. People are attracted by public spaces and many of them determine our daily experiences of and in the city. By working outside museum and gallery spaces, Kaunas Biennial aims to create and strengthen connections between the community and the city as well as help highlight and create the city’s own identity. For Kaunas Biennial, public spaces act as places of encounter that can facilitate social and political mobilisation and call to action. They are environments for interaction and exchange of ideas, diversity and inclusivity that impact the quality of our life and environment. And if acting in public space provides opportunities for the biennial to contribute on a major level to the social and cultural discourse, we will continue to use the city as our playground.

Neringa Kulik je nezávislá kurátorka, kultúrna manažérka, riaditeľka Bienále Kaunas a projektová manažérka platformy „MagiC Carpets“, ktorá je financovaná programom Kreatívna Európa. Medzi jej skúsenosti patrí práca v rôznych kultúrnych organizáciách a inštitúciách v Litve (Bienále Kaunas), ako aj v zahraničí (Londýn: Múzeum záhrad, Múzeum dizajnu a Britská remeselná rada), organizovanie a realizácia medzinárodných projektov, podujatí a festivalov rôzneho rozsahu, ako napríklad Collect Art Fair v londýnskej Saatchi Gallery a projekty a výstavy pre Bienále Kaunas. K tímu Bienále Kaunas sa pripojila v roku 2013.

V roku 2015 bola vymenovaná za manažérku rozvoja publika a v rokoch 2015 a 2017 úspešne spustila zahraničný vzdelávací program pozostávajúci z vyučovacích hodín, ktoré prebiehajú v múzeách a galériách, prehliadok post-industriálnych priestorov a špeciálneho programu pre jednotlivcov a skupiny, ktoré zažívajú sociálne vylúčenie. V roku 2020 ju vymenovali za riaditeľku Bienále Kaunas. Medzi jej kurátorské aj akademické záujmy patria súčasné umelecké postupy a ich vzťah k zapojeniu publika založený na spolupráci, inkluzívnych a spolutvorivých postupoch.

Neringa Kulik is an independent curator, cultural manager, director of Kaunas Biennial and project manager of the “MagiC Carpets” platform funded by “Creative Europe”. Her experience includes working with different cultural organizations and institutions both in Lithuania (Kaunas Biennial) and abroad (London: Garden Museum, Design Museum and the British Crafts Council), organizing and implementing international projects, events and festivals of various scales, such as Collect Art Fair at Saatchi Gallery, London and Kaunas Biennial projects and exhibitions.

She joined the Kaunas Biennial team in 2013. In 2015, she was appointed as the Audience Development Manager and in 2015 and 2017 successfully delivered abroad educational programme consisting of school lessons in museums and galleries, tours in post-industrial spaces and a special programme for individuals and groups experiencing social exclusion. In 2020, she was appointed as the director of Kaunas Biennial. Her curatorial and academic interests include contemporary art practices and their relationship to audience engagement based on collaborative, inclusive and co-creative practices.
