OAG ANNUAL CONFERENCE

2

WELCOME Message from the OAG President Dear Colleague, I take pleasure in inviting you to attend the 16th Annual Conference of the Ontario Association of Gastroenterology (OAG). This year the Conference will again take place at the beautiful Queen’s Landing Inn and Conference Resort in the nostalgic town of Niagara-on-the-Lake, an ideal setting in which to touch base with old friends and meet new colleagues. This year’s theme is CanMEDS and its importance in the practice of Gastroenterology. We will have discussions on being a communicator, a collaborator, and a manager in the practice of Gastroenterology. There will be fascinating lectures on scholarly and professional activities, as well as on being a health advocate. You will also have the opportunity to see how resident education merges with day-to-day GI practice. This year we will again feature an excellent summary of the St. Michael’s Endoscopy course. This is an opportunity to update your technical endoscopic skills. The OAG takes pride in its members and the contributions they make to the practice of Gastroenterology in Ontario. This year, we will be honouring Dr. Alvin Newman, of Mount Sinai Hospital, with the OAG Award. Our Companions will enjoy the arts and culture synonymous with Niagara-on-theLake. They will take a look behind the scenes at the Shaw with a guided comprehensive backstage tour of the Festival Theatre and learn about the many facets of live theatre. They will also have at their disposal a choice of two spas (at the Pillar and Post Inn or the Prince of Wales Hotel) at which they can relax and rejuvenate. We will once again have an opportunity to enjoy the town of Niagara-on-the-Lake during our ever-popular Lunch About, with a choice of great restaurants in town. Join us at this year’s OAG Gala and Awards Presentation as we envelop ourselves in the glamour and sophistication of the Big Apple. Let’s hail a big old Yellow Cab and take a virtual ride to New York City. There is no other way to enjoy the city’s cornucopia of cultures than through the dinner plate, so hitch a ride for the endless opportunities to stamp your palate’s passport during our Gala. Plan to take that tour with us and enjoy “the city that never sleeps”. Thanks to all of our preeminent and platinum partners and sponsors for supporting the OAG’s educational programs. The Conference Committee has done an outstanding job and created an excellent program. I am looking forward to interacting with you at our Annual General Meeting and to seeing all of you at our educational and entertaining weekend in Niagara-onthe-Lake this October. With kind regards,

David Baron, MD, FRCP(C) President OAG ANNUAL CONFERENCE

WELCOME Message from the Conference Chair I look forward to welcoming you to the Ontario Association of Gastroenterology (OAG) 16th Annual Conference and hope you will enjoy your experience in Niagara-on-the-Lake. I know all the academic people and residents fully understand the CanMEDs system. To us 'country doctors' we only see it as an optional check mark when filling out our MOCOMP hours. What is it all about and how does it apply to the practicing gastroenterologist? Your Conference organizing committee has looked at all the aspects of the CanMEDS framework, and found dynamic speakers in each of the categories. The topics will be relevant and stimulating to the practicing gastroenterologist. No debate this year, just good old fashioned knowledge. There will be ample opportunity to discuss these issues both during discussion periods and leisure time. Other highlights of the Conference will be the almost annual talk from St. Michael’s Hospital Endoscopy Course, and the Annual General Meeting. The Companion Program will feature a backstage tour of the world famous Shaw Festival Theatre. The highlight event of the weekend will be the annual Gala - a great opportunity to mingle with your friends and colleagues. This year we will be honouring Dr. Alvin Newman. We will also be congratulating Dr. David Baron for three outstanding years as the OAG President. We look forward to seeing you in October.

WELCOME TO NIAGARA-ON-THE-LAKE

Niagara-on-the-Lake is often called the loveliest town in Ontario, and has a long and distinguished history. Site of the old Neutral Indian village of Onghiara, it was settled at the close of the American Revolution by Loyalists coming to Upper Canada, many of whom had been members of the much feared Butler’s Rangers, based during the Revolution at Fort Niagara, then under British control.
