Students got a groovy greeting from Student Life with a welcome back party on campus. They served hamburgers, had giveaways and provided an opportunity for new and returning students to make friends and mingle. We hope all Kingwood Coyotes have a wonderful fall semester!
Hundreds turned out for Kingwood's registration festival and Super Saturday events, where future students received help with everything from Admissions to Financial Aid. And even had time for some video games!

Congrats to the Respiratory Care Club for claiming 2nd place at the annual State Convention for the Texas Society for Respiratory Care (TSRC). LSC-K sent two teams known as the “Snot Squad” to participate in the annual competition - also called the Sputum Bowl. Richard Hernandez and Dr. Fiona Campbell are the Club Advisors. Dr. Campbell says, "We are extremely proud of their performance, professionalism and competitive spirit!" The teams have been invited to compete on the national platform at the Annual Congress with the American Association for Respiratory Care in Nashville, TN in November, 2023 Good luck to them!
“Our relationship with our community partners makes the difference We have long-standing formal relationships with the Lake Houston Musical Arts Society, which helps fund the Kingwood Chorale and Chamber Orchestra and the Kingwood Big Band
The Kingwood Pops Orchestra also provides an excellent large ensemble opportunity for our students and infuses an energy into the instrumental side of the department We try to provide as many opportunities for our music students as they would receive in a state university, and I believe we have mostly succeeded "
LSC-Kingwood welcomes Dr. Michael Johnson as the new Band Director for the Music Program. Michael is a native of Alabama, where he has undergrad and doctoral degrees from the University of Alabama
He received his Masters from Texas State University Michael is a trombonist, and also composes and arranges music for a variety of ensembles Michael has big plans for the program, including renaming the community band, "The Kingwood Winds "
Michael says when it comes to inspiring young musicians, "Hard work beats talent every time " He says, "It's important for young students to realize that the teachers and virtuoso musicians they admire are standing on a mountain of mistakes and a few bad choices. A good teacher tries to make sure you don't make those same mistakes and be successful even sooner than they were."
Michael says his favorite band right now: The Diablo Swing Orchestra! Welcome to LSC-Kingwood, Michael!
Dr. Nell Matthews may be preparing to retire, but that is not slowing her down. Dr. Matthews, a member of the adjunct music faculty, is 86 years old and has been teaching Piano at LSC-Kingwood for ten years. Dr. Matthews has overcome numerous challenges during her life and musical career. For instance, she was denied a job because she was divorced and had two small children. "The director of the program said, Nell, you needn’t bother applying, we want a married male with a completed doctorate I decided I couldn’t change the male part, I wasn’t going to change the married part, so all I could do is go back to school " And she did She's also had four knuckles replaced in order to keep playing Dr Matthews has seen the campus change a lot over the years
"We moved here 26 years ago and I came to Lone Star to meet Todd Miller I wanted to sing in the Kingwood Chorale And I discovered this man named Todd Miller was teaching in the classroom building in the basement, and his room was really a closet He was half-time, he was the entire department The Chorale met in a cafeteria We did opera workshop performances in a hallway in the basement and from there, the next milestone was the Performing Arts center So for some years that was the center of music And now we have a Music Instructional Building, a single building devoted to music This doesn’t happen often on junior college campuses It’s wonderful " As for her advice to students seeking a music major: "Musicians seldom make very much money in their lifetime But is it all money? Tell a student to imagine loving something so much that at the age or 86 you still get a real kick out of doing it."

Congrats to these students on their graduation from the Nursing & Occupational Therapy programs!
Lone Star College-Kingwood is planning to create a new Garden Club on campus. Lilian Hulett, Women's Center Coordinator and Engineering Professor Jamie Turner are the advisors for the project. With the help of the Facilities staff, they dug out the garden in preparation to eventually plant flowers and vegetables. They will also be looking for students to help maintain the garden. Lilian says they are hoping the garden will be ready by mid to late September.
In our Faculty Spotlight, meet Eddie Pompa Eddie teaches NDT, or Non-Destructive Testing, at East Aldine Center Eddie describes NDT as "going to the doctor to get an x-ray or ultrasound to see what is inside without causing harm to the material " Eddie has also worked on transporting the Space Shuttle Endeavor, the Columbia accident investigation, and the Lunar model that is part of the Moon to Mars program Eddie says," knowing that I am part of this actual hardware and its actual place in history brings me great pride and a truly amazing story I can share with students and my future grandchildren " As for students considering this field of study, Eddie had this to say: " If you enjoy working with your hands and always learning, then jump right into NDT because you will never get bored, and it can lead you to some amazing adventures."
Families enjoyed darts, bowling, inflatables, snow cones, live music, and more at the "Welcome Fest." They also learned about the programs Atascocita Center has to offer.

A former Lone Star College-Kingwood student will face fierce obstacles and delight fans as she competes in the American Ninja Warrior show on NBC. Barclay Stockett is advancing to the Finals. This is her 8th time competing on the show. Barclay says the competition is not just about physical strength. "Not everyone can overcome the mental struggles of competing, especially, Ninja Warrior is very insane, you ’ re up on this course, you ’ re the only one, there’s all these lights on you, there’s all these cameras on you, there’s like a roaring crowd and if you fall in, you ’ re done, it’s over. You get one shot.” She also said her time at Lone Star was incredible and praised her history Professor Stephanie Kelly for making a lifelong impact on her. She also expressed admiration for Professor Lisa Darling. "She blew my mind, really taught me to question things and to be a little bit rebellious against ideas, against perception. And that was beautiful, because I felt like, I just kind of grew up just listening to what I was told and she just kind of broke that open for me." Barclay also had some of her poems published in LSC-Kingwood's Starburst magazine. Barclay has competed internationally for American Ninja Warrior Team USA in three countries, among other international competitions. Now she trains other Ninja Warrior athletes and helps design the courses the show utilizes. You can watch her full interview by scanning the QR code.
