FALL PREVIEW DAY Students and families had the chance to learn all about what Lone Star College-Kingwood and its centers have to offer at the first ever Fall Preview Day. Students explored various clubs, organizations, and programs. Hands-on demos were offered as well. The welding simulator was a big hit. Tours were offered in various departments around the campus – in Technology, Visual and Performing Arts, and Health Occupations areas. Rosalinda Renteria, who enrolled her daughter, said, “We got a lot of information. We’re pumped up, excited about the environment she’ll be in.” Another student told us she was looking to better understand the college process, and it was beneficial to come to the event to get information and meet new people.

Hello, Coyotes! The fall semester is in full swing and as you can see, October has been packed full of events and activities.

OKTOBERFEST CELEBRATION

BOO FEST Boo-Fest was a spectacular spooky time!

Families were able to trick-or-treat and then enjoyed a showing of “The Addams Family.”

A DAY IN THE LADY’S LAIR

It was a day of fun and pampering during A Day in the Lady’s Lair. Faculty, staff and students played games, painted pumpkins, made flowers and bracelets, and even scored some door prizes. A Mary Kay respresentative provided excellent makeup tips as well.

STUDENTS PAINT STONES FOR GARDEN OF HOPE

CAMPUS LEARNING GARDEN GROWING

Honors College students from LSC-Kingwood painted stones on behalf of the Holocaust Remembrance Association. Around 30 students from The Honors College Leadership Program (HCLP) painted 80 rocks for the Garden of Hope. The purpose of the day was for students to reflect on the lives of the estimated 1.5 million children who perished in concentration camps during the Holocaust. The Upstander stone project aims to have a stone painted for each child who perished. HCLP Apprentice Eleanor Buchan was one of the students who participated. She said, “By painting the rocks individually, it makes you think of the many lost children as individuals. Painting each rock helps you really understand the tragedy was more than just a number.”

The Holocaust Garden of Hope is located in Kings Harbor along Lake Houston in Kingwood.

Faculty and staff have been working hard on the LSC-Kingwood Learning Garden. They have planted squash, cilantro, basil, beans, chard, and flowers. Jamie Turner and Lilian Hulett, who have been spearheading efforts to replenish the garden, say they couldn’t have done it without the Facilities staff, who went above and beyond to help get everything cleared out and planted.

DR. STEGALL EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION AWARDS The Dr. Linda Stegall Excellence in Education Awards were held this month celebrating LSC-Kingwood student recipients. The event honors those students with scholarships, funded by an anonymous donor each year.

JAZZ BAND WOWS WITH FIRST CAMPUS PERFORMANCE

Nearly a hundred people packed the Kingwood recital hall to hear the Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Combo bands perform, led

CONCERT CHOIR PLAYS TO PACKED CROWD

The LSC-Kingwood Concert Choir played to a packed crowd during their Fall Concert. The Concert Choir is the main student choir of the college. Members come from all the various high schools in the area, but the choir also includes international students. Dr. Todd Miller conducted the choir and Dr. Rob Hunt was the pianist. FACULTY ART SHOW FACULTY SPOTLIGHT: MARI OMORI The 2023 Fall Faculty Art Show is underway. The exhibit features a variety of new work by professors Aaron Bielish, Rosemary Cantu, Perry Chandler, Cory Cryer, Aaron Novak, and Mari Omori. It will be on display through November 28th in the Fine Arts Gallery. Check out “EYEmusic” by Aaron Bielish on November 14th. Working with two Houston musical groups, Relative Dissonance and Loop 38, Bielish reveals how artwork can be interpreted as a musical score. This demonstration will be at noon in APA114, immediately followed by live performances in the Recital Hall from 2-3.

Mari Omori is our Faculty Spotlight.

Omori has been an art professor at LSC-Kingwood for 23 years. Her recent pieces showcase works on paper, recycled art - including a wreath crafted with more than 500 tea bags - and bronze fortune cookie sculptures.

Omori says teaching is highly addictive. "The best teaching method might be to have students teach themselves. My role may be an introduction to self-discovery. I feel excited about teaching when my students respond to the concepts, lessons, or the ideas of art- making I share, and begin to develop his or her own work." Omori says the inspiration for her art is nature.

CREATIVE SERVICES TEAM SNAGS 5 NCMPR MEDALLION AWARDS Kudos to the Lone Star CollegeKingwood Creative Services team.

They received 5 National Council for Media and Public Relations Medallion Awards. The team received 3 Golds, 1 Silver and 1 Bronze in the District 4 competition.

A CHRISTMAS CAROL IS COMING! The LSC-Kingwood Theater Department has been working hard behind the scenes on "The Lone Star Radio Show Presents...A Christmas Carol." Don’t be a Scrooge, come see this Christmas classic! Performances run Wednesday, Nov. 1st Saturday, Nov. 4 at 7:30pm each night.

HONORING BREAST CANCER FIGHTERS AND SURVIVORS

COMMUNITY FOOD FAIR

More than 200 families were served during the LSC-Kingwood Community Food Fair. The fair was a partnership with HAAM and Northeast Ministries. It provided fresh food and nonperishables to families in need. Thanks to the more than 30 volunteers made up of Faculty, staff and students, who helped make it a successful community event.

VOCABULARY BINGO A great turnout for the first English Vocabulary Bingo!

More than 20 people participated. The event was designed to help ESOL learners practice English in a fun environment. It was hosted by “Mi Familia, Mi Futuro,” an outreach program whose objective is to assist Hispanic, low-income, and other underserved students with attaining a post secondary education.

LSC-Kingwood Staff and students honored breast cancer fighters and survivors with a walk to the Learning Garden. Students from the Veterans Center, Women’s Center, SGA and others helped staff plant flowers to brighten up the garden.

More than 70 guests from across the Kingwood area were welcomed to the LSC-Kingwood campus for the annual Educator’s Breakfast. The purpose of the event is to give educators a chance to connect with LSC representatives and leadership and learn about the programs and resources the college offers, as well as thank them for their continued service to students.

SUSTAINABILITY TRAINING College Relations hosted a “Sustainability Training.”

The guest speaker was University of Houston Professor Dr. Tiffany Legendre. She gave a presentation on the topic “Food Solutions.” She discussed food waste and offered suggestions for alternative food sources such as edible insects. Thanks to College Relations for providing this informative session.

COMING OUT DAY On Coming Out Day, a three-member panel shared personal stories and expert insights on the 'coming out' experience. The event was hosted by the Office of Culture and Engagement-Kingwood and the LSCKingwood Culture Impact Committee. The dialogue served as a powerful reminder that coming out is not a singular event but a complex, ongoing process of embracing and sharing one's true self, influenced by culture, community, and personal circumstances.

BEST ROBOTICS COMPETITION It was a battle of brains and bots during the North Houston BEST Robotics competition Saturday, and it will all went down on the Lone Star College-Kingwood campus. Around 450 students from more than 20 different middle and high schools converged on the campus to compete. The students had the chance to show off their robotics building skills in the “Incision Decision” Competition. Teams were challenged to design a functioning robot that can aid surgeons to accomplish several surgeries in a short amount of time. Interim Vice President of Student Success, Ernesto Valenzuela, gave the opening remarks. LSC-Kingwood Engineering Professor Dr. Jamie Turner was one of the judges. And even Cody the Coyote made an appearance! The overall winner was: BEST Award 1st Place - Westbrook Intermediate School.

ASTRONOMY NIGHT There was a great turnout and the weather was perfect for a night of stargazing during Astronomy Night. Visitors were able to see the Hunter’s moon with special filters, as well as Saturn, Jupiter, and Vega.
