NOVEMBER 2014

A MONTHLY NEWSLETTER SERVING BECKER, OTTERTAIL, NORMAN, WILKIN AND MAHNOMEN COUNTIES

BUILDERS BUZZ BY NICK GREEN Greens Plumbing and Heating A Veteran owned company. President LRBA I trust everyone is busy trying to button up projects for the upcoming winter. Thankfully the weather has been holding out, and it will hopefully be warmer than last year. I went to the fundraiser Barbecue at Glyndon for Collin Peterson. BAM had contributed to his campaign for the work that he does on the Builders behalf. I did get to visit with him for a while. The book "Violence of Action" I contributed to is now out, and selling faster than they can print them. I was just in Atlanta with the main author, where we also met Bernie Marcus, founder of Home Depot. Everyone take care, and I'll see you at the next meeting.

Ron Mueller, President, Bremer Bank

Steve Gerszewski

The October 9th meeting was held at BREMER BANK. There was food and drinks and a great learning meeting. Steve Gerszewski Mortgage Lender and Ron Mueller, President talked about what they have to offer: construction, commercial and personal loans; business and personal banking; investment, trust, liability and workers compensation insurance. They pride themselves having full service bank offerings, while maintaining local decision making. We appreciate their taking the time do this.

OUR NEXT MEETING IS SCHEDULED FOR NOVEMBER 20TH AND WILL BE HELD AT LABARISTA. OUR GUEST SPEAKER IS DAVE NEISEN, THE BUILDING OFFICIAL FOR DETROIT LAKES AND THE BUILDING INSPECTOR FOR PERHAM. Social will be 6:30 and meeting to start at 7:00. Get a little sneak peek at what will be coming for 2015. New code guides will still be coming out, more dynamic and workable. Todd Rodeman

V iew MY Brenda Eidenschink Hello Members Hope you are enjoying this fall weather. I don’t think it’s going to last long. It’s been very busy at the office. The registration forms are coming in fast now, and we are just about two thirds full on the Home Show side and getting full on the Sport Show side too. So if you are interested in having a booth please get your registration form in soon. We will be holding our Plumbing Continuing Education class on Nov 21st. Please check the list of Electrical and Building classes that are scheduled. We also have the Lead Refresher class scheduled on Jan 7th. If your business would like to have a table at our Builders Expo on Jan 23rd please contact us and we can get you a registration form to fill out. Last year we had 20 vendors come to the expo to meet with the building contractors. Thank you to Bremer Bank for hosting our last meeting, which was very informational. If your business would like to host a meeting one month, please let us know and we can put you on the schedule for next season. We are also looking for businesses to advertise in our newsletter. Very inexpensive: $160 for the year if you are taking a single ad. Please contact us at the office if you have any questions on any of the classes. Thank you, Brenda Eidenschink

Letter from the editor Hello everyone. We have been keeping very busy with organization of continuing education classes , Home and Sport Show, Annual Meeting/Christmas Party and all the other things that seem to pop up. It’s been a great fall and hopefully it will be a decent winter. There is lots of information on our activities coming up, so be sure and read all the newsletter. If you have ideas for speakers for next year’s meetings, SHARON or would like to host one, please call the office. Have a great WESTERHOLM Thanksgiving. God has blessed all of us, so let’s be thankful. Until next month, Sharon

SILENT AUCTION -

Attention members, please be thinking of what you would like to put on the Silent Auction, at the Home and Sport Show, make it a little easier on the callers, and call or email the office on what you would like to donate.

CONTRACTORS -

Be sure and use registered subs. There have been some businesses in the state that have used non – registered subs, and have had to pay fines of up to $90,000.00. I know there does not seem to be anyone outside of the city that would check, but you can’t be too careful. You never know when someone will be out checking.

MHP CONNECT Two recent blog posts from MHP Connect. Thousands to Benefit from Better Housing After Funding Awarded Oct 27, 2014|13:40 Last week, Minnesota Housing Finance Agency awarded $162 million for housing development, which will touch 4,000 Minnesota households. Each will benefit from rehab or new construction of a safe, secure place to call home. This award package gives us many reasons to celebrate, both for the people who will benefit and for all the advocates and legislators who championed Homes for All to make a bigger pie. We also want to take stock of our work ahead -- for every dollar awarded there were almost two dollars' worth of requests that were left unfunded. Read on for background and analysis of the awards to help inform our work going forward. A round of thanks We can all celebrate the work of over 100 organizations in the Homes for All alliance, of which MHP has been a proud member. Without Homes for All, the funding awards would likely have been smaller. From school superintendents to architects to social workers to dedicated legislative suppporter’s from both sides of the aisle, support for Homes for All has been broad. On Oct. 23, Governor Dayton, Rep. Alice Hausman, and Sen. Stumpf, along with affordable housing developers, spoke to the tremendous achievement for housing during this year's legislative session. The $162 million in awards came from a combination of state and federal resources, broken out in the pie chart to the left. Most importantly, $73 million of the awards, nearly half, were a result of the 2014 bonding bill. During the 2014 legislature Homes for All championed and won $100 million* in bonding, Minnesota's largest bonding award for housing to date. Another large portion came from state appropriations. In 2013, Homes for All played

a role in increasing funding appropriations for housing by $33 million over the next two years. The funding committed for affordable housing, in combination with dollars that will be leveraged, is expected to total $500 million, or a half a billion dollars. What the awards will do The vast majority of the funds (about 94%) will go to multi-family rental developments, but the number of awards was more evenly split, as the table below shows.

The dollars will go towards needed housing improvement or preservation of existing affordable housing. Aside from "critical rental needs," other priorities included: • Preventing and ending homelessness: 689 units of supportive housing will be created or preserved. New supportive units include 255 permanent housing units and 364 temporary housing units. Another 70 units will be preserved. • Preserving federally subsidized housing (1,650 units). • Foreclosure and community recovery needs (466 units). In terms of making a dent in the need, it's also worth noting that only units that didn't exist before (i.e. new construction) will expand the number of families affordably housed. In total, the funding will produce 1,556 new units.

Where the awards will go Greater MN vs. the 7-County Metro. Overall, about a quarter of the units funded will be in Greater Minne-
