JUNE 2015

A MONTHLY NEWSLETTER SERVING BECKER, OTTERTAIL, NORMAN, WILKIN AND MAHNOMEN COUNTIES

BUILDERS BUZZ BY TOM WHITE Anderson Brothers Asphalt President, LRBA Things are heating up with the weather and with work. I hope everyone has a full work log for the summer and the only problems you will have is how in the world you will get it all done! It seems as though people are in a little better place to spend some of their hard earned money than recent years past. This holds great promise for those of us in the construction industry. Please remember your friends in the LRBA as you choose subs to work with and the referrals you give out. We all rely on each other to keep things local and within the LRBA. So, please do your best to promote your fellow members and the Association, when and wherever it makes sense. Look for information to come regarding the end of the year picnic. I’d love to see lots of new faces there so we can all make it a great time to network and make new friends. If you haven’t made it to a meeting in a while, please make it a point to get to this one.

Work Hard and Be Safe!

ANNUAL PICNIC SET FOR JUNE 15TH AT DUNTON LOCKS

We will be holding the picnic, by itself, after a few years of combining it with the Trap Shoot. It is a fun time to do some networking, have some fun and great food. The LRBA will provide the hamburgers, brats and hot dogs, buns and beverage, and we ask that all that come bring a favorite dish to pass. I will be making a potato salad and am sure Brenda will be making something good. Bring the family and any outdoor games that you have. Hope for good weather, so we can be warm and have a good evening. We will start cooking about 6:30 p.m. We will also do a Jack Pot drawing – the last for this meeting year. Call the office and let us know you are coming so we have an idea how much meat to buy. To get to Dunton Locks go South on 59 to County 6 west, to County 19 to the left. This road will take you down to the Fish Hatchery. Stay to the left and you will come to the picnic area. Green’s Plumbing and Heating has purchased Modern Heating and Plumbing. The new name will be Green’s Plumbing/Modern Heating. Rick and Kathy will be staying on for a while helping with transition and running the heating side of the business. I know Rick and Kathy want to retire after 35 years of ownership, so this transition works out perfectly. Congratulations to Nick Green and Kathy and Rick Michaelson. Todd Rodeman

V iew MY Brenda Eidenschink Hello members I hope everyone is having a busy work schedule! Do try to have some fun time also. Not much going on at the office. We will be starting our summer hours now. We will be open Tues – Thursday 9-12. If you do need to get a hold of me you can always try me at home. As Sharon said, we are having our picnic on June 15th, and would love to see you all there. I know everyone has busy schedules with your families but you can bring your family to the picnic. This is a great way for you to network with your fellow members and introduce your families with each other. Please make sure to RSVP with me, at the office. I would like to get an idea of how much meat to buy. We do have some open dates next year for meetings… if your business would like to sponsor a monthly meeting. Please let me know if this is something you would like to do. We will be having a new employee starting part time in June her name is Patti Kiebke. Please welcome her. Hope to see you at the picnic.

Letter from the editor May is here, so sometime soon we should see summer, after a little taste of winter. Finally getting the moisture we need to get the lake levels up a bit and make the grass grow. Be sure to come to the picnic, on June 15th, as it is always a good time and you can meet some people that can’t make it to the meetings. Dunton Locks is a nice place to go with the kitchen and canopy, in case the weather isn’t too nice. Bring games – horse shoes equipment, etc. When we SHARON WESTERHOLM were all younger we could play volleyball. Most of us can’t move that fast anymore. For anyone that can’t make it to the picnic, HAVE A GREAT SUMMER!!! Sharon Westerholm

NEED INFORMATION ON ACCESSING THE BUILDING CODES ONLINE? THIS SHOULD HELP YOU. In order to access the code online, one needs to go to the Revisor’s website and obtain the codes through its rules pages. ing the lack of statewide inspections. These insurance professionals were surprised that less than 1/4 of the state’s counties and a span of municipalities inspect construction. It was part of my speech to them because we need to expand the pool of industries who care about quality construction. Lenders are also on BAM’s radar for this issue - earlier this session Brian talked with the mortgage bankers about it. Ironically, this morning both Jane DeAustin and Keith Kylmala forwarded to me a good example on why state wide inspection is needed. THIS WEEK AT BAM Friday, Saturday, Sunday, then Monday by midnight! That’s all that is left in the 2015 regular session. (I have not heard the final results on the following). Right now, we are in a holding pattern as Capitol Leadership negotiate on how to finish the state’s $40B+ budget. During the final days, lists of “priorities” exist (including the sprinkler issue) that are part of the horse trading that happens at the end of session. Yesterday’s rumor was that there would be no tax bill and no transportation financing bill - but this is a usual rumor, as it the chatter about whether there will be a special session because the budget won’t be settled by Monday’s midnight deadline. While we wait for the big bucks to be divided into various state program pots, legislators are working on a variety of policy issues including what to do with 50’ ag buffers, Minnesota Care (task force?), body camera video privacy, and voting rights for convicted felons after serving their sentence. The good news is that the 6-year code cycle, etc. bill is tucked away in three different pieces of legislation. Most recently it was amended into a Department of Labor & Industry housekeeping bill and passed off the Senate floor with a 64-0 vote. Many thanks to Senator Dan Sparks (DFL-Austin) and Senator John Pederson (R-St. Cloud) for making this happen. The only question now is whether this

DLI housekeeping bill will be held by the House as a potential “vehicle” to amend into the bigger state department budget provisions. We can safely say there will be no Sunday liquor sales and no legal marijuana in 2015. However, you may be able to get a 64 oz beer growler for “take out" from your local craft brewer on Sundays. UPDATE ON MAY 18TH – From Remi The 6 year codes, etc. language in the DLI housekeeping bill passed the house 78-44 Friday night. It is on its way to the Governor. Hopefully he will sign it. There was a hiccup in the bill relating to an elevator provision that may cause the Governor pause in signing the entire thing. I think this issue is manageable and the bill should get signed. After a series of fits and starts over the weekend, last night the Omnibus Jobs bill containing the sprinkler mandate prohibition was stalled in the conference committee and taken to leadership to see if there is any resolution to the bills many controversial provisions. It is my understanding the largest sticking point in that bill are all the energy policy clauses relating to the state’s comprehensive conservation programs including the CIP. We will know more later. My expectations for survival of this bill and its policy language is low. We will update you as we learn more.
