MARCH MEETING
THE MEETING FOR MARCH 12TH WAS AT LABARISTA IN THE MALL. MIKE HALVORSON FROM AUER STEEL, did a fantastic job as our speaker. He talked about different options for heating, and pros and cons for heating systems. If you weren’t there, you missed a good meeting.
BY TOM WHITE Anderson Brothers Asphalt President, LRBA Well, the Home and Sport show has come and gone. It was a big success and I’ve gotten some great feedback from people who attended. In fact, I’ve already signed up some jobs with people who stopped by my booth and I hope the same is true for all the vendors who had a booth at the show. A big thanks to all members, family and friends who helped with the show set up and tear down, the show couldn’t happen without your efforts. As I type, it’s snowing and blowing outside, the long winter continues for a bit longer but I know spring is just around the corner and for most of us, the long days and hard work begin. So smile, stay positive, and make it a great summer. I look forward to seeing everyone in April and May for the last meeting and the Trap Shoot on April 25th Take Care.

V iew MY Brenda Eidenschink Greetings Everyone; Well hopefully spring has sprung! Home & Sport show was a huge success; our head count was up on Saturday this year. We have had a lot of great feedback on the show. Our silent auction was a fantastic success with bringing in over $10,000 for scholarships. Thank you to all who contributed to this fund. Thank you so much to all who pitched in and volunteered for the Home Show and Silent Auction. We could not do this without all of you. Next on our agenda is our Annual Trap Shoot on April 25th. If you are interested in shooting or having a team, please let me know at the office right away. We will also be having our annual picnic this year by itself at a different time. We will let you know when we pick a date. We are hoping for some time in June when it is warmer out. We can do a potluck with the Builders providing the meat & buns. If you know of any plumbers that are looking for their Continuing Education Credits, please have them contact us. Our next class will be on April 17th. We have our last meeting coming up on April 9th, next week, at At Ease Dock & Lift. If you think you might have a prospective member, please ask them to come as we could use some new members. Letter from the editor I love the Home and Sports Show, but it is one massive amount of work, with the show, the dinner and the Silent Auction. Thank heavens for the volunteers that worked Friday, Saturday, Sunday and the callers for the auction that worked several days to get donations! We ended up with raising over $10,000.00. FANTASTIC!!! Next up is an evening at At Ease Dock and Lift on Highway 10 East. This will be our last official meeting until SepSHARON tember. We are also having fewer meetings next year, with WESTERHOLM September 10th, November 19th, January’s Christmas Party/ Annual Meeting, February TBD, May – Trap Shoot and Picnic dates TBD. If you are thinking of hosting a meeting, you will need to make your reservation soon. Hope you all have a great Spring. I will be out having hip surgery. Hopefully I’ll have more energy again! In early Spring of 1962, General Douglas MacArthur gave his last speech to the cadets at West Point. The speech was a tribute to our military and the general concluded with these lasting visions; "Today marks my final roll call with you, but I want you to know that when I cross the river my last conscious thoughts will be of The Corps, and The Corps, and The Corps." The General's passion was the importance of The Corps and he emphasized it as such. It was given to hopefully have the next generation of our military understand the true meaning of their mission so that they can deliver the message to the next, and so on. I would like to borrow his focused importance and take poetic license with his passionate reminder and apply it to our association. The Core, and The Core, and The Core. What is the core of our association? Why should building industry participants cross the threshold from outside to inside? There are multiple reasons or desires. Some are even reasonable desires. What are the reasons for joining or maintaining membership? • Opportunities - every non builder would like the opportunity to sell to builders and the reason most join is to build their book of business, if not today within the week. There will be opportunities but no guarantees. • Networking - meeting like minded industry professionals • Education - Builders join to learn more about their business, whether it's about codes or best practices, education will be readily available at all three levels of membership. • Insurance - There are quite a few small businesses that need insurance at reasonable prices. There are some associations that, through a collective, offer insurance, whether it be health, workers' compensation and any other needed insurance that a company would require to supply or construct a home. • Someone told you to join - could be a builder making sure that their vendors are members. Could be a lumber company who insists that their window manufacturer join. Regardless, these are now members who

have limited choice in the matter. All or parts of the above may be applied to all your members. No matter what the need of the potential member, or current member, The Core will need to be highlighted somewhere. So, let's start here and I would hope that, as General MacArthur did 53 years ago, a strong reminder is heeded... "The Core, and The Core, and The Core" is the ultimate reason we are in business within the building industry. The Core is advocacy. None of the above happens without advocacy. • limited to no opportunities for business. Without advocacy, environmentalists win, no growthers win, NIMBYs win and anybody else who is against home building. Why? without advocacy we as an industry have no voice in our state capitals or in Washington, DC. • If that's the case, no reason for industry education • no need to meet new folks • you still might need insurance but it will be extremely high because the association itself won't be needed. • There won't be much leverage to make someone join if the industry is not healthy.
Advocacy, Advocacy, Advocacy is THE core of our association. It would be like a brand new car with no engine; nice to look at but just one big paper weight. My advice to you is to remember the real reason, the core reason, we have the home builder associations. Everything else are just features of your membership with varying degrees of benefit.
