Shooting their way to victory, the Northeast girls junior varsity basketball team beat their previous record
Sophomore Lisa Wassenberg says, "People think Northeast girl's basketball is a joke. They didn't think we'd get better." But the Rockets proved them wrong.
Ginger Venhaus thinks that the girl's program hasn't been very strong at Northeast . Venhaus says,"We've started to win a lot more games, but not as many as people expected with the new coach "
Attitude was their key. "We have positive attitudes. We really get on each other," says Wassenberg In addition, Coach Pierce would remind the team of Northeast pride, what it means to them , and to play for that.
One of the team's accomplishments for the season was their win against Lincoln East . Northeast defeated the Spartans in overtime by a couple of points. This turnout was the exact opposite from the previous year, when East had won the game .
Proud of their victory, the Rockets still hope to improve. "O ur goal is to win state in 1997 when our majority sophmore players will be seniors, " says Wassenberg.
This year the team is thinking about Southeast. The Rockets have always had a strong competition againstthe Knights. Venhaus says, "They've always been the best, but we're getting better. We have a chance to beat them!"
