Loretta Loves it Local!

Words by nita cameron “Nobody cares what you look like when you’re all sweaty…” She was of course talking about performing hot yoga.

Loretta Ryan - Nundah local and 4BC presenter - has a favourite spot in the area, and it’s the Bikram Yoga studio.

However, working up a sweat isn’t the only thing that Loretta enjoys. She also loves her job - despite the fact that she has to start work at 3:30 in the morning.

Loretta co-hosts 4BC’s breakfast radio program alongside fellow presenter Ian Skippen.

But Loretta never has a problem getting out of bed, because she spends her days talking about things that matter to Queenslanders.’

“I love telling people’s stories and making people smile…that’s worth it. The aim of News Talk 4BC is to connect with people and to keep them informed,” Loretta said.

One of the privileges of Loretta’s job is having the opportunity to be involved in community events, and over the past few years she has participated in Nundah’s Christmas in the Village.

During her career, Loretta has interviewed stars like Gene Simmons and Barry Gibb of the Bee Gees, but it’s not only celebrities that make her job exciting and interesting. Loretta says that meeting regular people and hearing their inspiring stories is what is really important.

Christmas Party

NNC finished 2013 on a high note, holding a Christmas Party for all of the Centre’s clients and supporters.

There was a huge turnout with more than 150 people attending and enjoying the festivities.

We would like to thank the Lord Mayor’s Charitable Trust who provided a grant that covered costs for catering and children’s entertainment. The trust also provided presents for all the children who attended the party.

Also a big thank-you to our volunteers and staff for all their hard work, and local businesses for their support.

Overall, everyone had a great day and we hope to see you all next year!

Nundah Neighbourhood Centre was very fortunate to receive a small grant from Energex under their Community and Sustainability Fund. This grant will go towards upgrading the playground area at the Centre.

Women’s Personal Safety Workshop Wednesday 2nd April. Sign-in at 9:45am, finishes at 3:00pm.

The workshop will cover: • Myths and facts relating to violence • Confidence/personal empowerment • Body language and communication • Fear management and dealing positively with confrontation • Assertiveness and awareness training • Self-image and self-esteem • Practical and effective physical self-defence techniques • Personal safety strategies for home and public spaces.

Thank-you A big thank-you to the Yoga Ladies from Energex who donated $400 towards purchasing Christmas gifts for women escaping domestic violence. It meant a lot to the staff at the Centre to be able to give these women a small gift, and we couldn’t have done this without your generous donation.

The Nundah Community Legal Service [NCLS] Social inclusion is central to Australian society: the idea of the ‘fair go’ and justice for all. Legal problems rarely exist in isolation. Broad economic and political uncertainties, as well as financial, social and cultural issues have an impact, and may lead to job losses, struggles paying day-to-day expenses and caring for loved ones, fractured relationships and domestic violence.

It is easy for people to feel lost in the daunting legal process, a maze of jargon, forms and forbidding personnel in black robes. Lawyers can help but they are expensive, and government-provided legal assistance has many competing demands on its resources.

At the NCLS, we strive to help people with problems to break the cycle early.We help to reduce the ripple effect of hardship and despair by providing all members of the community access to justice through free, local, accessible, quality egal service.

We do this through our long established weekly Wednesday drop-in advice service staffed by dedicated volunteer lawyers and students together with an employed senior solicitor who sees clients by appointment. Our service is not means-tested and takes a holistic collaborative approach.
