Peace of Mind at Mindset Dental

Mindset Dental is Brisbane’s first purpose-built practice for those 17 years and older that are afraid of the dentist.

Dr Trent Davidson and Dr Helen Fisher created Mindset Dental to help those who may experience fear or anxiety while undergoing dental treatment.

“We’ve heard time and time again from patients about previous bad experiences where they had pain during their treatment or felt judged,” says Dr Helen.

“Some clients have avoided the dentist due to embarrassment or hopelessness about their situation. That’s why Mindset Dental was born.”

Dr Trent and Dr Helen have postgraduate training in psychology

and counselling, and take the time to really listen to each patient.

“We use a three-pillared treatment approach – talking, comfort and sedation,” says Dr Trent.

“We take the time to listen, we create a comfortable environment (including noise-cancelling headphones, anxiety

Celebrating a Decade of Success

Grand Ideas in Northgate is celebrating ten years in business.

Owners Paul and Christine, who have a long history of transforming discarded items into treasures, are celebrating their remarkable journey, which started many years before Grand Ideas opened.

Paul and Christine started their salvaging career in the 1970s in Brisbane, visiting construction sites that were knocking down historical buildings.

With a desire to keep the history alive, Paul and Christine have spent decades restoring and repurposing items that can be turned into unique and sought-after items.

Ten years ago, Paul decided to open Grand Ideas in Northgate as a way to keep himself entertained as he planned his retirement. Now, Paul is as busy as ever, with no sign of slowing down.

Brisbane Motor Museum Opens in Banyo

Start your engines – the Brisbane Motor Museum is opening in Banyo on Saturday, 16 June.

Whether you’re a die-hard car enthusiast or simply curious about the history of automobiles, the Brisbane Motor Museum is a place that will ignite your passion for all things automotive.

Nestled within a spacious, custombuilt facility, the museum boasts an impressive array of vehicles, from vintage roadsters to classic cars. Each exhibit tells a unique story, inviting guests to relive the glory days and celebrate the history of each vehicle.

The museum has been carefully designed to protect the vehicles on display, with all exhibit areas pressurised and temperature controlled, with a filtration system that ensures that vehicles are kept dust-free.

The museum also features function and meeting areas, a cafe, a motoring library and a gift shop.

The Brisbane Motor Museum will open Friday and Saturday, 10am to 5pm, and Sunday 8am to 3pm.

For entry fee prices and booking information, visit brisbanemotormuseum.com.au.

Grand Ideas is a place where one can uncover a hidden gem, such as a vintage typewriter, a French-style clock, old post office boxes, or even a Telecom Payphone.

Paul and Christine have collected Australia’s largest range of reclaimed French Doors, and an extensive range of Egyptian Doors, which are acquired from across Australia and overseas. For curious treasure-hunters, Grand Ideas is a haven, with shelves stacked high of decor, lighting, and art pieces. Make sure to head in soon to see what hidden treasure you can unearth.

The Local Podcast Unpacking Burnout and Exhaustion

Listen to When Burnout Becomes Reality at burnoutpsychologysupport.com or on Spotify, Apple or Amazon Music.

Nundah local, Shannon Swales, has turned her own experience of burnout and exhaustion into a monthly podcast that helps others in the same situation.

In February 2021, Shannon, a Clinical Psychologist, suffered a burnout, which left her unable to work and feeling physically, emotionally and mentally exhausted.

During her recovery, Shannon started a monthly podcast, When Burnout Becomes Reality, which features personal experiences and skills and strategies to prevent or overcome burnout.

“I found value in hearing other people tell me that they had or were suffering burnout too,” says Shannon.

“Hearing this gave me an instant feeling of connection and normalisation. I believe we can heal and grow by sharing our truths.”

The podcast features special guests, including educators and nurses, who share their personal experiences of burnout to recovery.

Shannon is looking for more people to feature on her podcast – if you are an expert in burnout or someone who has lived through it and would like to share, please contact Shannon.

Shannon has now returned to work and has launched Burnout Psychology Support, a therapeutic space for anyone who constantly feels overwhelmed, lost, or exhausted.

LEGAL MATTERS

with Aaron Ball from Shorestone Legal

What to do if your ex holds all the assets

In some relationships, one partner controls all of the assets and income. This can happen if one partner is the primary caregiver and homemaker for the children, or if there’s a small business where one partner controls the business, and the other partner contributes management and administration services, including bookkeeping and marketing.

If your ex-partner is refusing financial support following a relationship breakdown, there are many good options available to you. Free legal advice is available through community legal centres or online resources, including in Nundah where we are very fortunate to have the high-quality services of Northside Connect.

Shorestone Legal can also provide free or reduced fee consults, and can provide ongoing legal assistance until matrimonial assets can be liquidated. We can also help you with applications to Court for immediate or ongoing financial assistance.

If you are involved in a separation where finances are being withheld, it is important to get legal advice as soon as possible. Contact Shorestone Legal to discuss what options are available to you.

HEALTH

The benefits of exercise during cancer treatment

Did you know, after chemo, exercise is the most important therapy in helping cancer patients?

Seems crazy when you are feeling unwell, but exercise can help through all stages of cancer treatment.

• Before treatment, regular aerobic exercise can help reduce complications and enhance post-surgery recovery.

• During treatment, exercise can minimise the duration and severity of side effects.

• Following treatment, working with the right team can improve the speed of recovery, aid in achieving a full recovery, and improve the management of long-term side effects.

Many clients we see want to return to exercise but are not sure where to start. Some have issues with lymphoedema, cording, scarring, or just not feeling very fit! They may also require support in returning to work. Pear has been providing rehabilitation and support to our patients with oncology exercise medicine since 2016. Our Physio, Shannon, can help you manage or reduce the risk of lymphoedema, while our Pinkmoves group classes can help you increase strength, fitness and endurance.

We would love to extend our outreach in the community and provide care to the growing number of people diagnosed with cancer.

First Home Buyers Scheme extended

The scheme that has helped many thousands of first home buyers has been extended, with some changes.

The Home Guarantee Scheme, where the Government guarantees the loans of eligible first-home buyers with a deposit under 20%, has been expanded.

The extended scheme aims to address the housing affordability crisis and provide greater support to prospective first home buyers. It reflects the Government’s commitment to expanding opportunities for home ownership.

It will expand its criteria to enable more people to qualify, including permanent residents, non-couple joint applications, previous home owners and more single guardians.

Along with another Government equity scheme, there are more options than ever to get into the housing market.

With so many potential schemes available it is best to understand your eligibility, not only for the scheme, but also for other lending criteria.

There are multiple lenders who have different policies so it's important that you find one that fits your needs.

We can help determine if you are eligible and help you find the right loan.

REAL ESTATE

with Karl Garufi from Belle Property Ascot

Take advantage of the winter selling season

Whilst spring is typically seen as the season to make a move, there are many advantages to selling a property in winter.

Buyers are active year-round –while some believe there are more buyers in warmer months in reality, buyers are active year-round. Stock levels fluctuate, not buyers.

More serious buyers – winter separates the browsers from the buyers. Who would trudge in and out of property inspections on a cold Saturday morning if they weren’t committed to finding their next home?

Less stock and more competition –less stock means less choice, which increases demand for properties.

This boosts the likelihood of a sale and of securing the price you want.

Some houses show better – some homes come into their own in winter, exuding a cosiness that proves more inviting to buyers.

More comfortable moves and auctions – a winter sale avoids sweat-drenched events in the summer heat, making for a more comfortable experience (your removalists in particular will thank you!)

There’s no need to wait until spring –take advantages of the winter selling season this year.

FITNESS

It’s not always necessary to stop exercising when injured

Exercising while injured can help improve your outcomes and reduce recovery time – as long as you have the right support.

While some injuries will prevent exercise or make it virtually impossible, other injuries will allow you to exercise with modifications or changes. Exercise can be a powerful treatment in reducing pain if it is managed well. It can improve pain levels, improve tissue healing and stimulate muscle growth, which could reduce pain and stimulate healing.

Often during an injury, pain can change the way we move. However, with the support of your treating team and a good coach, movements at gym can be altered, changed or modified to support recovery and to keep you engaged in the activity you enjoy. Not only could this have beneficial impacts on your physical health and recovery, but can help contribute to better mental health.

At Fitstop, we work closely with our friends at The Joint Physiotherapy to support members and guests who might be carrying an injury or have a history of injury they’re managing.

Nudgee Recreation Reserve Update

ARC Hill Park Upgrade

I value your feedback on initiatives that benefit our local community.

The first-class recreation and sport precinct at Nudgee Recreation Reserve is progressing well. During my recent site visit, I spoke to the team about the design of the BMX pump track and how it is designed for different skill levels. The track is being designed and built by Tristyn Kronk and the team from BIKETA (Bike Tracks Australia) who are specialists in the design and building of BMX and pump tracks.

The perimeter walking path has been completed and the workout locations are in place. Cricket pitches are in. All is progressing well with a target completion date later this year.

Many of the projects implemented within our local suburbs are in response to feedback provided by residents, including the upgrade of ARC Hill Park’s play equipment.

I was able to allocate funding through Northgate Ward’s Suburban Enhancement Fund towards the upgrade, following a letter received from a local family.

We want Brisbane to be a healthy and active city and my focus as your local Councillor will remain on ensuring Northgate Ward is a great place to live, work and play.

Dental Health and Diabetes: Taking Care of Your Smile

Maintaining good dental health is crucial for everyone, but it holds even greater significance for people living with diabetes.

What’s Your Project?

Stand-up Comedy

This is Kate.

Most adults avoid public speaking. 16-year-old Kate creates her own jokes and tests them out on complete strangers.

After years of studying her favourite comedians, Kate was compelled to take her show from the mirror to a live audience. She ran her jokes by her Dad to a lukewarm review. Undeterred, she entered the Melbourne Comedy Festival’s Class Clown 2023 competition.

It was the scariest thing she has ever done – especially as her hero, Sam Campbell was backstage.

Individuals with diabetes can be more prone to periodontal (gum) disease, tooth decay, and other oral health issues due to elevated blood sugar levels.

Additionally, diabetes can reduce blood flow to the gums, impairing the body's ability to fight off infections.

The moment Kate was in front of the audience, the fear dissipated, she was in her zone, and she took out the top prize. Not bad for a shy girl from Nundah who wouldn’t dream of practicing her stand-up routine on her friends.

Kate gets a buzz from testing jokes, with laughs being the measure of success. If a joke falls flat, she tweaks the content and delivery until she gets the response she’s looking for.

Now that her abilities have been truly validated by this major win, Kate has the confidence to keep growing her craft.

Mum (also her manager, security guard and driver) has been banned from her shows, sneaking in once, only to be spotted by Kate and instructed via text to leave the venue!

Thank you to The Pedaler Coffee for hosting our time together.

Meet Jess Turnbull –The Rising Star of Squash

The Joint Physiotherapy has announced its sponsorship of talented local squash player Jess Turnbull.

Jess, who currently has a world ranking of 64 and came first in the 2022 Australian National Titles, is one of Australia’s top squash players. The partnership aims to provide support to Jess as she pursues her aspirations in the world of professional squash.

Jess has been working with Steve Collins, The Joint’s Physiotherapist and Strength & Conditioning Coach, since 2016.

‘For Jess, we do a lot of work on injury prevention, strength and conditioning,’ says Steve.

It is important for those with diabetes to maintain a regular oral hygiene routine. This includes brushing teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and flossing daily.

The other vital role in preventing complications is regular dental check-ups. Nundah Village Dental suggest scheduling dental visits every six months so their dental professionals can assess your oral health, professionally clean your teeth and detect any early signs of gum disease or other issues.

SIGNS OF PERIODONTAL (GUM) DISEASE

• Do you have bad breath?

• Do you have red or swollen gums?

The team at Nundah Village Dental has a holistic approach to dental care, and work with patients to tailor treatment plans that help patients maintain dental health for life. Nundah Village Dental has recently welcomed Jay to the team, who has experience with children and adults with additional health requirements, and can help those who may need extra support.

If you’d like more information about managing your dental health, contact the team at Nundah Village Dental.

• Do you have tender or bleeding gums?

• Do you have pain when chewing?

If you have any of these symptoms, it is important to book a dental appointment quickly.

Volunteer Acknowledgement

At Northside Connect, we are extremely fortunate to have a large community of volunteers who support all our programs.

Our volunteers range from volunteer solicitors at our Wednesday Evening Legal Services, to volunteers who pack and distribute hampers at our Tuesday morning food relief. We are so grateful for all that our volunteers do for us and the community.

For National Volunteer Week, we celebrated each of our 40+ volunteers with cupcakes and coffee gift cards to Espresso Train. Our volunteers support so much of our centre, and some have been with us for many years.

The Nundah Spirit

If you are interested in volunteering with Northside Connect and supporting our local community, please email us at admin@northsideconnect.org.au.

Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month Event

On Friday, 19 May, the Northside Alliance Against Domestic Violence (NAADV) hosted an event for Domestic Violence Prevention Month, called “Changes & Challenges in Domestic & Family Violence”.

The event was held at Northside Connect and had both professionals from the industry and women with lived experience. We had our family and DV solicitor Yolandi Beer speak at the event, as well as Rose Brown from Tenancy Queensland.

The event finished with refreshments and connections, allowing those in attendance to meet others while enjoying some food and drinks.

Community Lunch

English Class Volunteers Needed

Our English as a Second Language (ESL) classes run on a Monday and Thursday each week, supported by our incredible team of volunteers.

We are currently seeking volunteers to support our classes on Monday mornings from 10am. The classes run casually, and the centre provides resources and support for volunteers. We encourage all people who may have teaching experience, or those who have an interest in supporting our migrant community members in developing their English skills, to volunteer.

Northside Connect was delighted to have DJ Leo Electronica play a music set at the Community Lunch.

Leo attends the Nundah Creative Industries Disability Support Hub where the group is supported by Champion Sound. The group meets locally at Boyd Park each week to learn and develop creative industries skills.

We look forward to DJ Leo Electronica providing the community with music each Tuesday fortnight for the Community Lunch at Nundah Neighbourhood Centre.

Food Relief

The cost of living crisis has put increased pressure on many support services, and Northside Connect has had a significant increase in requests for food relief hampers.

We are seeking any donations of in-date, long-life pantry items, and have created a graphic to break down the items that are most useful to us, but all is welcome! You can drop donations to the centre when we are open, or to the donation bin near the self-serve checkout exit at Woolworths Nundah.

If you are interested, please contact us on 3260 6820 or admin@northsideconnect.org.au.

Art Group

Northside Connect launched a new community art group in May.

Supported by local artist Gwenyth, the group worked across various mediums including painting on canvas, polymer clay, and charcoal sketching. We were fortunate to receive funding from our local Councillor, Adam Allan, through the Lord Mayor's Community Grant. The grant covered the costs of purchasing all the art materials and allowed us to keep the group at no-cost for participants. After the success of the group, we will be looking to do another group next school term, again exploring different art mediums and for people at all skills levels in the community.

If you are interested or want to be contacted with the dates for our next art group series, please email admin@northsideconnect.org.au or call 3260 6820.

Update on parking at Northside Connect

Northside Connect has moved to a Permit Parking system for our carpark, which is located at 14 Station Street, Nundah.

Anyone visiting the Centre or wanting to park here will need to come to reception to request a permit.

We also want to remind people that the Northside Connect parking is only available for the use of clients, staff, volunteers, visitors and those hiring the space for private and community events and activities.

The aim of moving to a parking permit system is to ensure that parking is available and safe for people attending services and activities at Northside Connect.

Thank you everyone for your understanding.

Imperial Picture Theatre

Originally called the Imperial Pavilion, this famous landmark stood where the Centrelink is today in Nundah.

For many years the theatre was one of the largest buildings in Nundah and was leased out for dances and receptions, as well as showing silent films and later talkies.

In 1925, Mr Chas Rose purchased the theatre and had it remodeled. Under his guidance it grew to be one of the finest suburban picture houses and became a structure of ornament delight.

Mr Rose also added a café, known as the Imperial Café.

Talkies started in 1929 and the first movie shown was “Innocents of Paris”. It was one of the first theatres on the northside with the capacity to hold 2,000 patrons.

Mr Rose, who lived in Rode Road, died suddenly in 1930. Mrs Rose ran the theatre afterwards. The theatre continued on to bring entertainment to the community.

In 1965 the then owner, Mr Harry Sourris, closed the theatre to build a block of shops on the site.

On the last showing night, patrons had no idea that it was to be the last pictures shown there.

Many people attended over the years and have fond memories of their time at the Imperial Picture Theatre.
