SUPERINTENDENT'S MESSAGE

Community, Lovejoy ISD is different by design. Our graduate profile was developed by stakeholders in 2008 and has been a foundational component of our discernibly different approach to education. An approach that values connection, community, and excellence. We have six precepts in our graduate profile, one of which is being fair and respectful of others.

Lovejoy

Fair and Respectful of Others

The Lovejoy graduate has had the opportunity to interact with students, teachers, administrators and parents in a variety of settings. He or she has chosen to act in accordance with the principle - treat others as he or she would want to be treated. These experiences have led the student to go outside himself or herself to find happiness and joy in the love, friendship, and companionship of others. (Link to full Lovejoy ISD Graduate Profile)

One of the things that makes Lovejoy ISD uniquely special is that we aspire to a higher standard. Our mission, core values, and graduate profile serve as strong touchstones for our words and actions. As caretakers of our culture, we share the responsibility to confront behaviors that are not in alignment with these important touchstones.

While the majority of our students are choosing to conduct themselves in a manner that is reflective of our core values and graduate profile, we have had students, parents, and teachers share instances where students are not being respectful to other students

as well as to teachers and staff. This includes students making statements to each other that are not in alignment with our organizational beliefs and values. There is no place for inappropriate comments or racial statements in our schools. We expect students to demonstrate kindness and self-control.

Our administrators and counselors are here to support and help all students. We encourage you to reach out to us if you have any questions or concerns. If you or your child have concerns about reporting, we have an anonymous tip reporting tool that can be accessed here.

One Heart One Lovejoy is more than a tagline. It represents our commitment to each other. I have great faith in our ability to work together to honor that commitment.

There is only ONE LOVEJOY and we are ALL LEOPARDS!

STUDENT ACTIVITIES & RECOGNITIONS

Hart Finalists in Collin County Poetry Contest

Hart Elementary is proud to announce that 3 of our 4th graders have made it to the finalist round in the 52nd Annual Collin County Poetry Contest sponsored by the Mockingbird Poetry Society. In the congratulatory letter for each student, it was shared that the judges were impressed with their work and they will be chosen to receive first, second, third, or honorable mention in the Fourth Grade category. Do you realize this means that Hart Elementary students placed in 3 out of the 4 rankings? On April 23rd, each of the finalists will be recognized at the Annual Awards Ceremony. Congratulations to Etta Wiltin, Makenna Mason, and Jacinta Chan on this honor. We also want to congratulate their teachers Amy Smith and Molly Baker for all of their hard work inspiring the love of writing. Please join me in congratulating these young ladies on their awesome work!

Spring Has Sprung in Science

Spring has sprung in science! Each year, the elementary students study different living organisms. Last week we shared Kindergartners are planting seeds to learn about the life cycles of different plants. In First grade students love candling eggs and watching the chicks hatch! Soon, second graders will receive butterfly larvae. They watch the larvae eat and eat, turn into pupae, and then metamorphose into gorgeous painted lady butterflies! Third graders observe African dwarf frogs transform from tadpoles into frogs. The fourth graders are learning about vermicomposting by creating compost bins. They will measure their bins and worms to track the growth of the worms and amount of compost created. Lots of fun learning watching our organisms grow!

Marty the Robot

Some students in 1st grade at Puster Elementary had the opportunity to explore computational thinking with Marty the Robot! Marty provides an unplugged and app-based platform for coding. These students used block-based coding to make Marty move across the floor, kick a ball into a goal, move his eyes and change their color, wave his arms, and celebrate with a dance! Within just a short time, all these students tried different movements, found errors in their code, and created loops in their code! A special thanks to the Puster librarian, Ariel Stewart, for providing the location and support as students had this unique opportunity. Lovejoy ISD is hoping to extend these experiences to more students and campuses in the near future!

Gifted and Talented: Court of Innovation

Each year, students in Mr. Jasen Eairheart’s G/T AP Language and Composition course complete a summative project called the Court of Innovation after reading The Devil in the White City by Erik Larson. Students research and prepare a formal presentation outlining what they believe is the most innovative product from the Chicago World’s Fair. In alignment with the Texas State Plan for the education of Gifted and Talented students, students create advanced-level products, and may work independently or in groups.

Jasen Eairheart, AP Language and Composition teacher, says “The Court of Innovation allows my G/T students to apply what we've been learning about argument and apply it to an area of strength for them. They choose the most innovative display from the myriad choices present at the 1893 Chicago's World Fair and present that innovation to a panel of judges through their choice of medium. Over the years, we've seen a 6 foot tall Ferris Wheel, motorized and built to scale; buildings recreated via Minecraft and other various sandbox applications; artistic representations of Cracker Jack and Juicy Fruit; a video game dedicated to peanut butter; pop and rap music videos paying homage to electricity and spray paint; short films pitting hamburgers vs. hot dogs; and even a miniature Venus de Milo sculpted from Tootsie Rolls. Even though this was our 9th Annual Court of Innovation, students are still finding new innovations that appeared at the 1893 World's Fair, and they continue discovering unique ways to present their arguments.”

The assignment, which encourages creative and critical thinking has become something of legend at Lovejoy High School. Each year, students try to “outdo” each other and the previous year’s winner. Students engage teachers from other disciplines to portray influential people of the past or simply provide a cameo appearance. The coveted winner earns bragging rights until the next Court of Innovation.

Electric Car:Gregory Powers, Sharon Chen, Romi Kahana, Brielle Taylor, Alina Srambickal

Ann Casey, former Lovejoy teacher and current judge for the Court of Innovation writes, “The students' projects are as novel and inspiring as the 19th century innovations they portray. Their informative and fun presentations delight classmates (and this judge) and demonstrate deep learning.”

As students wrap up their presentations this week, the question on everyone’s mind is “who will be this year’s winner of the Court of Innovation?”

Girls Soccer Achieves 2nd Place Finish in District

Tuesday night the varsity girls soccer team beat Kingwood Park in Belton 2-1 to advance to the region quarterfinals. Emma Nelson scored the first goal with an assist from Lainey Pierce in the first half. Playing down a man for the last 25 minutes of the game Ella York scored the game winner with 2 minutes left with a bicycle kick that was assisted by Emma Nelson with another bicycle kick.

Unfortunately, the team came up short Thursday night in our Region Quarterfinal matchup vs. Forney 2-0.

Overall the varsity team finished the season 16-4-1 (10-2) with a second place finish in district. This was the first time the girls program has advanced to the 3rd round of the playoffs since 2014, also advancing three rounds in 2013 and four rounds in 2012. Thank you to all the fans, staff, administration, parents, coaches, players, and especially the seniors for making this season so special!

Collin Jazz Festival Outstanding Ensemble

The Lovejoy High School Jazz Ensemble competed this past Saturday at the Collin Jazz Festival at Collin College. This long running contest has been a staple in local Jazz competitions since the 90s. Congratulations to our teams that qualified to VEX Worlds (AKA: The VEX Robotics World Championship) at the Texas Region 2 Championship back on March 4th! - Teams 1082E and 1082X were celebrated last week, but this week we want to shine a spotlight on the 5 additional teams that qualified for VEX Worlds.

Teams 1082C, 1082J and 1082V all advanced to the World Championship due to their high Robot Skills Challenge scores and their many hours of dedication and hard work. We are so excited and proud of these 3 teams! Teams 1082C, 1082J and 1082R were also Quarterfinalists at state. But it gets even better from here-

VEX Worlds is an international competition where teams from 30+ countries are represented, so it is an incredible honor to earn an invitation/qualification to this tournament. 1082R just qualified to VEX Worlds due to their Global Skills rank- out of over 5,000 teams who ran Skills this year, 1082R was in the top 22% of teams in the entire world and therefore earned their qualification to go to the World Championship!

Additionally, we want to celebrate 1082Z for getting awarded a spot to the World Championship! Not only is this an incredibly hardworking team, who represented us so well at the State Championship, but they also previously won the Excellence Award and was a Tournament Finalist at their last competition- clearly they are a strong, young team deserving of this award.

Robotics

1082Z was able to receive an awarded invite to VEX Worlds due to the incredible efforts of the Lovejoy High School Chapter of the International Robotics Honor Society (IRHS) who submitted an entry for the IRHS Online Challenge this year- and we won! This is a historical accomplishment that truly highlights how great our student leaders are and also how big of an emphasis our students place on community service to promote STEM and robotics in kids of all ages. Take a look at our website submission which captures all the loving work done over the past year. We are #LovejoyProud for how these students come together and help to transform our world to make it a better place.

This is not the entirety of the IRHS Chapter but certainly most of the students who worked hard on the entry- pictured from left to right: Brielle Taylor, Sharon Chen (Historian), Madeline Coughlin, Alina Srambickal (President), Chakrearsey Prom (Secretary), Liam Palazzolo (Treasurer), Fletcher Boots (VicePresident), Luke Farkas, Gregory Powers, Aarathi Devakumar
