editor’s letter

Ringing in a Bright and Colorful New Year! I am thrilled that you have chosen to begin 2024 in San Antonio! It may be the seventh largest city in the country, with world-class arts, entertainment, sports, cuisine and outdoor recreation, but San Antonio is truly a small town at heart. It is a city defined by its diverse heritage, where a vibrant collection of cultures coexists and celebrates each other’s unique identities. As you were entering downtown, you surely saw two of our beloved towering treasures: the Tower of the Americas, but for the 1968 World’s Fair in San Antonio — named HemisFair to signify our multicultural city, and the Torch of Friendship, a gift to the city from the Asociación de Empresarios Mexicanos, which symbolizes two cultures, two languages and two roads merging together. And these were just the beginning of iconic landmarks along the River Walk to discover. This time of year in San Antonio is a bit quieter — perfect for leisurely strolls and passing time at riverside restaurants, shops and galleries. For those of you doing a holiday detox, you might need a little willpower during your visit. The River Walk’s food and bev scene is glorious any day of the year, but big celebrations between February and March encourage overindulgence!

February 10 brings the annual Bud Light River Walk Mardi Gras Celebration and River Parades with a wild and wonderful party. If you miss it, do not worry. So many restaurants along the River Walk will transport you to NOLA, Rio or Venice for that Carnival atmosphere year-round! Go green with the River Walk’s Bud Light St. Patrick’s Day Celebration and River Parades, March 16-17. This annual event includes eco-dyeing the river a vivid green, live entertainment and the highlight of the weekend — the River Parades with serenading bagpipers. The budding landscape-lined River Walk is a perfect verdant backdrop for these early spring activities. March is also when Texans celebrate their independence with a commemorative ceremony honoring the defenders at sunrise on March 6. Plan to return for the Phil Collins Collection in the new Ralston Family Collections Center where artifacts depict the story of the Alamo. For art lovers, while you are strolling the new River Walk Public Art Garden, swing by the River Walk Artisan Shows — one each month — where more than 40 vendors display their crafts. Then pop in the two museums along the River Walk, and check out our four lovely historic theatres that provide a wide range of entertainment from music, comedy, magic and dance. Read on for details!

So much more awaits you during January, February and March on the San Antonio River Walk. It is a bright and colorful way to begin the new year!

on the River Walk By Dawn Robinette, CTA If you have roamed the River Walk and thought, “I could spend a whole day here!” you are more right than you may realize. And yes, you can indeed spend an entire day soaking it all in. We have gathered a few suggestions to help you enjoy the River Walk from sunup to beyond sundown and hint — you can spread these out over multiple days to make the magic last even longer. Thompson San Antonio - Riverwalk It goes without saying that the Thompson is one of the true gems along the River Walk — a modern hotel featuring luxurious dining, including Landrace, led by James Beard nominated chef, Steven McHugh, as well as the stunning rooftop bar, The Moon’s Daughters. The Thompson is also a premier venue for special events and that includes its unique art-inspired dinners with dishes influenced by the curated artwork on display throughout the hotel. “A Taste of Thompson” Dinner Parties, which launched last year, enables guests to customize and host their own bespoke dinners in what Thompson calls an immersive culinary journey. Choose from a variety of spaces at the hotel, such as the lovely lobby, the sexy Solana Ballroom foyer, the relaxing Cenote Pool Deck or the aforementioned indoor-outdoor rooftop lounge, or request a progressive dinner and enjoy your courses in multiple spaces. The dinners feature exclusive menus, beautiful decor and thoughtfully selected music or interactive entertainment, tailored to your personal preferences. Executive Chef David

Arciniega goes the extra mile by walking guests through each divinely curated course, explaining preparation and inspiration, therefore creating not just a meal but a cherished memory.

Ladino One of the newer additions to the Historic Pearl, located in the Museum Reach section of the River Walk, offers exceptional modern mediterranean cuisine with a twist unlike any other restaurant in town. With dishes like Pishkado Asado (fermented tomato, orzo, cucumber, pine nuts, Hawaij Soubise) and Lamb Belly Ribs (with arugula, fennel, tzatziki and saffron vinaigrette), you can expect a truly unique menu. Venues within the restaurant include the upstairs lounge and bar, perfect for cocktails and light bites, indoor seating, patio dining, or even a full restaurant buyout for a beautifully coursed meal. The incredibly talented Chef Berty Richter and his team will design a customized menu, called Mezas De Alegría (tables of joy), which includes an appetizer, entree and dessert. The varied menu also accommodates the dietary needs of all guests. thesanantonioriverwalk.com

Zocca Cuisine d’Italia The newly renovated restaurant, nestled in the Westin Riverwalk Hotel, is an excellent choice for those craving authentic yet contemporary Italian cuisine in a refined yet relaxed setting. This beautiful section of the River Walk is usually less trafficked and features idyllic views of the tree-lined river. Zocca offers indoor and outdoor dining options, including a private room or the entire restaurant, depending on the size of your party. It is the perfect choice for everything, from business events to bridal parties. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, the menu choices are endless and, needless to say, mouthwatering! From a rich, hearty Texas Tagliatelle with smoked beef short rib to scallops, gnocchi, risotto and so much more, you might just have a difficult time deciding what to order but are guaranteed your guests will go home satisfied

Colette at The Phipps The new River Walk restaurant, Colette at The Phipps, promises, “You will do foolish things, but you will do them with enthusiasm,” — actually a quote by the restaurant’s namesake, Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette, a French novelist. That promise holds true after a very leisurely and indulgent dinner of craft cocktails and rare French-Latin-Japanese fusion dishes prepared by Venezuelan Chef, Darlen Narvarez. The restaurant is located on the same floor as the renowned Paramour Bar, overlooking the far north part of the River Walk, and features an entirely open-air rooftop restaurant. Regardless of the occasion or size of your party, Colette will make you and your guests feel special and cared for, with a menu curated just for you, in a locale that feels far away from home.

This list of establishments offering private dining experiences and varied cuisines is by no means exhaustive. Visit any restaurant or hotel along the river and they will be thrilled to help you coordinate a personalized and memorable dining experience for you and your guests. 16 RIO Magazine

SHOWTIME!

The Glamour of San Antonio’s Historic Theatre District By Kimberly A. Suta They say, “art is life,” or in San Antonio we say, “arte es vida,” and, of course, that includes the world of performance, from music to dance, and even comedy. In San Antonio, we are blessed to have several premier historic theatres that showcase some of the best events in town. Majestic Theatre The Majestic Theatre, located in the heart of downtown along Houston Street, mere steps from the River Walk, is true to its name. It is truly a stunning, majestic masterpiece with an interior reminiscent of Moorish castles, complete with a bird collection, imported trees, a twinkling night sky and intricately carved wood that is actually made of cast plaster.

20 RIO Magazine

There is just something about this old-world theatre that always promises a special night out. Maybe it is the whimsical set design that surrounds the stage, or perhaps the bygone echos of crowds cheering for an encore, but whatever the case, it is a beloved, iconic theatre that has stood the test of time — but just barely.

thesanantonioriverwalk.com

Almost a century old, it was completed in 1929 for the Interstate Theatres company and built on the site of the even more historic Royal Theater. At the time it was built, it was the second-largest theatre in America and, interestingly, the first one that was fully air-conditioned.

Tina: The Tina Turner Musical

Upkeep for such a large and elaborate venue was not easy and so it closed in 1976. It almost became a parking lot until the Las Casas Foundation brought it back to life, and the Majestic reopened in 1988. Now, it holds the title as the oldest and largest atmospheric theatre. For those unfamiliar with the term “atmospheric theatre,” it is defined as a type of movie palace design meant to evoke the feeling of being outdoors in a certain time and place through the use of architectural elements, projectors and ornamentation. This style was at its height of popularity in the 1920s.

The Broadway in San Antonio at the Majestic Theatre season includes “Tina: The Tina Turner Musical” on January 16-21, “Beetlejuice” on February 13-18 and “Come From Away” on March 15 and 16. You can also look forward to “The Rocket Man Show,” a tribute to Elton John, on January 26, and Michael Bolton on March 27, among many others.

Tobin Center for the Performing Arts You might be surprised to discover that the Tobin is also a historic building. Once known as the San Antonio Municipal Auditorium, which was originally built in 1926 as a memorial to American soldiers killed in WWI, it was renovated and renamed in 2014. The primary H-E-B Performance Hall was designed to house both acoustic and amplified performances, including symphonies, ballet and opera. Sir Paul McCartney even graced this hallowed theatre that same year to perform a special benefit concert for the Center. Shiny and new once again, it’s a stunning modern venue San Antonians are proud to call their own. Upcoming shows to put on your calendar include “Sweat Reading” on January 8, Les Ballets Trockadero De Monte Carlo on January 18, the classic “My Fair Lady” on January 20 and 21, “Pretty Woman: The Musical” on January 31 and February 1, no doubt, an inspiring interpretation of Hollywood’s most romantic blockbuster, and Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater on March 5, to name a few.

Empire Theatre

MANIA - The ABBA Tribute

Officially called the Charline McCombs Empire Theatre, it is located along N. St. Mary’s Street, but the building actually abuts the Majestic. In fact, the two are actually sister theatres with connecting backstages. The Empire was built in 1914 on the site of the former Rische’s Opera House — yes, San Antonio once had its own opera house — and was designed in the style of a European palazzo. It is even listed in the National Register of Historic Places, but a massive flood in 1921 nearly destroyed it, requiring seven long years of custom millwork, decorative plaster and painting with metallic powders to restore its original grandeur. During its long life, it has been both a vaudeville house and what they used to call a motion picture theatre. This performing arts venue now hosts numerous types of spectacular live events, including concerts, classic productions, comedy and even children’s theatre, not to mention private events. Coming up, comedy enthusiasts will not want to miss Jim Breuer on January 11, the hilarious Rob Schneider on January 26 and Alan Cumming on March 9. Magic lovers, get your wands ready for The Magic 22 RIO Magazine

of Jen Kramer, a Las Vegas headliner, on January 27. And on February 1, grab the girls for MANIA – The ABBA Tribute, and sing and dance all night. thesanantonioriverwalk.com

Aztec Theatre

Los Lonely Boys - The Dead South

The Aztec Theatre, along with the Majestic and the Empire, was part of San Antonio’s theatre district. Technically, it still is, although nobody refers to it that way anymore. This fascinating historic theatre opened in 1926 as a Mesoamerican-themed movie theatre and, at the time, was considered the “most elaborate” of its kind in the entire United States. The auditorium was designed to create the illusion of sitting in an open courtyard in a Mesoamerican temple complex, and touts pyramids, ziggurats, a two-ton chandelier and colorful murals. It is now one of only three that still exist. Despite its struggles, including an extended closure, the unique theatre has been restored to its 1920s meso-merizing beauty, and has become a local’s favorite for live entertainment. Another extensive renovation is currently underway. The owners, Aztec Family Group, have plans to turn the floors above the theatre into a boutique hotel. Do not miss the Mesoamerican sculpture gazing down from the riverside balcony. Make sure to get your tickets early for all aforementioned theatres, including the Aztec, with upcoming musical shows such as Los Lonely Boys – The Dead South on February 24; comedy shows such as Tim Dillon on January 25, Willie Barcena on February 2 and Nimesh Patel on February 10; and the one-of-a-kind “Who’s Bad: The Ultimate Michael Jackson Experience” on January 18.

HEMISfair

What’s Old is New Again By Susan Yerkes

Looming over San Antonio’s downtown, the Tower of the Americas is the city’s most visible landmark. You can spot it from the highway or the air. From its lofty, rotating observation deck you get a bird’s-eye view of the living landscape.

Hemisfair Civic Park 24 RIO Magazine

HEMISFAIR ‘68

The Tower is a top tourist experience. Like the Alamo, it has become an icon, with its tall spindly base and spaceship-shaped top. But the Alamo is all about history. And the Tower of the Americas has always been about the future. It was built as the crowning glory of HemisFair ‘68, an ambitious project that changed San Antonio’s future. HemisFair ’68 was the brainchild of a group of business and civic leaders who wanted more for their sleepy town; more business, more action, more pizzaz — a place on the global stage for a city best known for its history, if known at all. They wanted the world to see San Antonio, so they set out to host a World’s Fair to celebrate the city’s 250th birthday. It was the first World’s Fair ever held in the Southwest — it lasted for six months and attracted 6.3 million visitors, but it took six years of frenetic planning. It would be downtown, just a block away from the Alamo, smack dab in the city’s center. There were controversies. It cost 156 million dollars, mostly federal and state funds and city bonds, with millions more basically donated by the fair’s local underwriters. To make room, the city used eminent domain to acquire 92 acres in a “blighted” downtown neighborhood, including some historic buildings of the Germantown sector. Of 129 homes and buildings deemed historic, only 22 were left standing to serve as shops, galleries and restaurants. Thirty-three nations, from China and Colombia to Switzerland, South Korea and most Central and South American countries were represented. There were 15 corporate pavilions, from Coke to Eastman Kodak. Texas built the grandest pavilion of all — today’s mid-century modern UTSA Institute of Texan Cultures. Arkansas was the only other state with its own pavilion. The Southern Baptist Church and the Church of Latter-Day Saints had pavilions. The Women’s Pavilion, which also thesanantonioriverwalk.com

still stands today, was built with grass-roots enthusiasm in a time of emergent feminism, and supported with thousands of $5 memberships and larger donations from women around the world. A monorail ran around the ground, and a smiling cadre of Gulf “Tour Guides” in spiffy outfits whizzed VIPs through the crowds in little carts. For some reason, the fair’s mascot was loveable Luther the Dragon, a featured performer in the Coca-Cola pavilion’s popular puppet show, produced by the famous Sid and Marty Krofft. (Luther went on to star in the Kroffts’ Saturday morning TV show, H.R. Pufnstuf.) There was a waterskiing show in a built-for-the-fair lagoon. Huge crowds gathered daily to watch the spectacle of Los Voladores de Papantla, the “Flying Indians” of Mexico, who performed a slightly altered version of a 400-year-old ritual. Clad in colorful outfits, they lit torches, “sacrificed” a lovely maiden, then tied ropes around their waists and climbed to the top of a 114-foot pole where they leaped into space and whirled around, letting out their ropes as they swirled gradually to the ground. Ambassadors and heads of state visited. Norway’s King Olaf mistook King Antonio, a regally-clad dignitary who rules over Fiesta San Antonio®, for a fellow ruler. President Lyndon Johnson and Lady Bird were popular visitors, and President Johnson made his Independence Day speech from the fair. In the end, HemisFair ’68 was a fantastic celebration and a financial bust, winding up with about 7.5 million dollars in debt. Generous underwriters paid most of it off. But the fair did what promoters had promised — it changed the face of San Antonio for the future. It put San Antonio on the map — for business, tourism, the arts and sports. It also established the city, with its rich international heritage and colorful Latin connections, as the “confluence” of cultures in an exciting way. RIO Magazine 25

Hemisfair Civic Park The Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center began attracting major meetings. The San Antonio River Walk, where a few local restaurants were just getting started, was lengthened into the Convention Center and began to attract crowds of locals and visitors. Downtown’s first big hotels were built for the fair — most notably the Hilton Palacio del Rio, which marked a milestone in modular construction. There was no time to build it using conventional methods, so San Antonio construction magnate H.B. Zachry had all the guest rooms built and completely furnished, right down to the furniture, artwork and even ashtrays — at a site seven miles away, and then lifted, one by one, into the building frame by a gigantic propeller-assisted crane. National TV featured Zachry and his wife Molly waving from the balcony of their fifth-floor room as the crane lifted and placed the room firmly in the structure. Famous artists visited, and local philanthropists commissioned powerful public art pieces that remain today. Juan O’Gorman’s acclaimed “Confluence of Civilizations” mosaic mural on the face of the Lila Cockrell Theater, and Carlos Merida’s “Jazz” opposite it, are two of the best-known. The city’s creative side was spotlighted. As for sports, Red McCombs, long-time owner of the NBA Spurs, recalled that seeing San Antonio in a world-class city role led him to buy a franchise, bringing what became the Spurs team to town.

in. Dough Pizzeria Napoletana, Commonwealth Coffee, La Paleteria, the Bombay Bicycle Club and more hot spots are thriving. “We continue to work towards attracting locals and mesmerizing visitors,” Andujar said. “Always with the question: Is this good for the park? And will it make San Antonians proud?” Andujar calls the Hemisfair vibe “sticky – not slippery. Sticky means it’s hard for you to just walk through. It draws your attention; a flower shop or the delicious smell of baked goods. We are very much after sticky,” he said. This past fall the second phase opened with Civic Park, a beautiful event lawn where up to 10,000 people can gather comfortably for the kind of festive events San Antonio is known for — Jazz’SAlive, Luminaria, Fiesta San Antonio, Muertos Fest and a whole calendar full of happy happenings. Tower Park, the last great space, is coming together now. Zachry Hospitality, part of the company that did so much for HemisFair ’68, recently broke ground on a new 200-room hotel, the Monarch, part of the eclectic Curio Collection by Hilton. Meanwhile, a mix of carefully curated residential buildings has grown, re-populating a new neighborhood along with the public spaces. Adjacent to the Convention Center, the River Walk and half a block from the Alamo, Hemisfair is once again a magical place.

After HemisFair the site sadly languished, reviving as HemisFair Park in 1988 with a lush landscaping project centered mostly around the Tower. Finally, in 2009, the city made a major step, creating the Hemisfair Park Redevelopment Corporation to use public and private partnerships to re-energize a beautiful but little-used area. Now, as Hemisfair, 40 open acres are coming back to new life. The master plan envisioned three public park areas, complemented by a thriving residential presence, with locally-owned shops and businesses scattered through “one of the world’s great public spaces,” as architect and Hemisfair CEO Andres Andujar puts it. Yanaguana Gardens, the first phase, is full of imaginative art and play spaces, and rings with shouts and laughter of happy children and adults. There are meditative spaces, too, and free creative sessions, games, yoga and live music draw people 26 RIO Magazine

St. Patrick’s Day Celebrations Along The San Antonio River Walk By Ann Koehler

Join the San Antonio River Walk and the Harp & Shamrock Society of Texas for a fun-filled weekend celebration. Events include live entertainment, an Artisan Show, the official Dyeing the River Green, sponsored by MadDogs, and the annual Bud Light St. Patrick’s Day River Parades.

Dyeing the River Green, sponsored by MadDogs Saturday, March 16 11:00am to Noon, Museum Reach 1:00 to 3:00pm, Downtown Sunday, March 17 1:00 to 3:00pm, Downtown

Every year since 1968, the River Walk is magically transformed into the River Shannon as an eco-friendly green dye is swirled into the water to the tunes of a performing bagpiper. This year, the transformation begins on Saturday on the Museum Reach and moves to the downtown portion of the River Walk, followed by a second downtown dyeing on Sunday, with free viewing along the entire River Walk passage. The color is instantly apparent and intensifies with water movement by the boats. It is a great time to sit on a patio and enjoy a pint, or two. Free to attend.

Since 1969, the highlight of the River Walk’s St. Patrick’s Day Celebration is the procession of Irish-themed and decorated floats that can be viewed from anywhere on the parade route. Several bagpipers will grace the floats along with other entertainers. No matter where you find yourself on the San Antonio River Walk, you have been gifted the Luck of the Irish! This event has been organized by the San Antonio River Walk and the Harp & Shamrock Society of Texas since its inception. Free to attend.

St. Patty’s Day Every Day Irish Sing-Alongs The original Durty Nelly’s Irish Pub dates back to Ireland in the 1620s at Bunratty Castle, and in 1974, an identical pub was built at the Hilton Palacio del Rio. Spot the San Jose Tile Murals

Ride the San Antonio Zoo Train

Named for the workshop at Mission San Jose in the 1930s, which created many styles of pottery in addition to these painted clay tiles that adorn the River Walk with bursts of color and vibrant storytelling, the pieces were as significant and collectible then as they are now. Keep an eye out for them, especially along the walls of the Museum Reach stretch. Here’s where you can spot them:

All aboard! The San Antonio Zoo Train has been a favorite among kids and adults alike in San Antonio since the 1950s. Upon its opening in 1956, it was the longest miniature railway in the world, attracting more than 1 million visitors in its first two years of operation. Today, new locomotives offer a relaxed ride through Brackenridge Park with stops at the Witte Museum and Japanese Tea Garden.

Take a Selfie with the Robert H.H. Hugman Bust Who is Robert H.H. Hugman? He is the man who planned the River Walk design! This famed American architect created the initial drawings for the River Walk in 1929 to revitalize downtown after devastating floods. The plan was set into motion in 1939, thanks to funding from the Works Progress Administration. Hugman was a visionary, as his River Walk design has become one of the most popular attractions in the country. You can find his commemorative bust near The Republic of Texas Restaurant.

Visit the San Antonio Missions

Mission San Jose, is known as the “Queen of the Missions” for its stunning architecture and beautiful grounds. The site is still an operating Catholic Church almost 300 years later, and you can attend a uniquely San Antonian mass complete with a mariachi choir on Sundays. The tradition was brought over from Mexico by Sister Frances Jean Terrazas in 1969. No matter your religious denomination, this mass provides a fun and lively start to your Sunday in a beautiful fusion of culture and faith.

Stroll Through Hemisfair Park Hemisfair Park is located directly below the Tower of the Americas. The name for the 1968 World’s Fair Park was coined by local businessman and civic leader Jerome K. Harris Sr, to establish San Antonio as a cultural destination. Original cultural pavilions still stand today, like the State of Texas Pavilion, which now houses the UTSA Institute of Texan Cultures. The park is also home to the Yanaguana Garden playground, as well as boutique shops, restaurants and bars.

On a mission to visit the most historical spot in Texas? Mission Trail comprises the southern end of the San Antonio River Walk. It is home to four of the five UNESCO World Heritage Site missions, including Mission San Juan Capistrano, Mission Espada, Mission San Jose and Mission Concepción. Franciscan friars settled and built missions in the early 1700s to spread the Catholic faith. Today, you can hike the El Camino de San Antonio Missions Trail, a route tied to the famous pilgrimages around the world.

Want to unleash your wild side? Take a trip up to the San Antonio Zoo. This 100-year-old zoo was founded in 1914 when Colonel George W. Today, the zoo boasts over 50 acres and is home to 750 species of animals. The organization works to protect and educate the public through its conservation efforts.

Ascend the Tower of the Americas Life is better at the top, especially at a towering 750 feet! the Tower of the Americas was built for the 1968 World’s Fair in San Antonio, called Hemisfair, and remains one of the most popular attractions in San Antonio today. Did you know our tower is almost 150 feet taller than the Seattle Space Needle? It just goes to show that everything is bigger in Texas!

Cross the Selena Bridge Much of “Selena: The Movie” was filmed right here on the San Antonio River Walk, including the famous bridge scene. You can recreate the magic and cross the bridge yourself. It is located between N. Saint Mary’s and Navarro Streets, and makes for a great photo op! The River Walk footbridges like this one were part of Hugman’s master plan to make businesses accessible to the river level. They were completed in 1941.

Watch San Fernando Cathedral Illuminate for The Saga

The San Fernando Cathedral, located in the central Main Plaza downtown, is one of the oldest churches in Texas. It was founded on March 9, 1731, by a group of 16 families who came from the Canary Islands at the invitation of King Phillip V of Spain. With over 5,000 people participating in weekend mass, it remains a cornerstone of the community almost 300 years later. It is also home to The Saga, a breathtaking video art projection by international artist Xavier de Richemont. This display of lights depicts the past, present and future of San Antonio, casting over 7,000 square feet of stunning color and animation onto the cathedral facade. Enjoy free shows every Tuesday through Sunday at 9:00 and 9:30pm.

Play at Kiddie Park Kiddie Park is America’s original and oldest children’s amusement park that has been delighting kids since 1925. The park has preserved its 1920s style by maintaining all the original rides, such as its old-fashioned Ferris Wheel and famous hand-carved Herschell Spillman carousel. The park moved locations and underwent a renovation in 2019, paving the way for a new generation of memories. Today, it is located near the entrance of the San Antonio Zoo.
